Captain America: The Winter Soldier succeeds not only as an exhilarating, viscerally satisfying Marvel action picture, but also as a nimble conspiracy thriller that's as compelling as it is fun.

Chris Evans is also as awesome as ever as the Captain, really bringing the character to new depths that have never been seen before from the character. One of the coolest things about the film is the Captain's adjustment to life in the post-Avengers modern world. His morals as a man of WWII honor and dignity definitely contrast from the outlook on war and politics to that of a character from the present such as Nick Fury which is something I really thought was needed for the movie. Another standout performance was from Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, for which she portrays very well just like she's done since Iron Man 2. Captain America: The Winter Solider is a great piece to the Marvel Cinematic and to the Captain America standalone films as well and it really makes me excited for what's to come for The Avengers: Age of Ultron. Along with some secondary characters we've seen before, providing an immense depth in the understanding of their actions and how they will affect future stories to come. Sam Jackson has a stronger presence than ever before, validating Nick Fury as a main staple in the MCU among other key characters. Captain America is stronger, faster, and a more refined soldier than ever before, equipped with better fighting skills and a more equipped understanding of modern technology. Evans plays the earnestness of Captain America's good and bad morality with convincing finesse in an age of grey that he has yet to find a comfortable balance. Johansson progresses the allure of the cunning and multifaceted Black Widow, while bringing a splendid and lively balance to Rogers' straight and narrow.
In the midst of such a clever script, 'The Winter Soldier' introduces a band of new characters, all of which play an important role, creating and establishing a more layered and conceivably real MCU. Frank Grillo brings the swelling bundle of muscle known as S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Brock Rumlow to life. Emily VanCamp surprises with her portrayal of Agent 13, whom Should have had more screen time with Cap than just two quick scenes. Robert Redford plays Alexander Pierce, a superior ranking Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., friend of Nick Fury, and representative of the World Security Council. Pierce is a wonderful look into the higher ranks at S.H.I.E.L.D., contributing new insights as to how the organization is run outside of Fury, Agent Coulson, and Agent Maria Hill. Anthony Mackie is Sam Wilson aka The Falcon, an ex-military special-ops paratrooper and a welcomed addition recruited by Rogers to help fight the good fight. Mackie fits comfortably among the cast of veteran actors and should play nicely with the other Avengers.
Re-designed for combat and strength, The Winter Soldier's brings upon a great intimidation and fear when it comes to any action scene. Sebastian Stan does an incredible job sustaining the character and not letting himself down throughout the scene. The only thing that is left unsaid is how he managed to obtain such power. The connection between Rogers and The Winter Soldier is dealt with true care and excels the story of Captain America from the first film brilliantly. (Staying for the credits will give you a good lead on to Captain America 3.)
The Winter Soldier is an incredible sequel to Captain America: The First Avenger and The Avengers. Writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, the duo behind Thor: The Dark World, the Narnia Trilogy, and The First Avenger, have done such a great job shaping Captain America's story, that this movie could be a one hit wonder without the explanation of any prior movies. There are many exciting twists and turns in this well-constructed, political action-thriller, but nothing comes as more of a shock than how important the story is at defining the direction of the MCU. What occurs in The Winter Soldier will inherently influence Avengers: Age of Ultron as well as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. – which could definitely make the TV series a lot more interesting and desirable to those who have followed the story line.
Even though, The Winter Soldier is the darkest story we've come to encounter, the attention to detail Creates an immense build, and raising many deep-seated questions about government and soldiers of war while also taking Rogers on an emotional journey. It also has the best action choreography among all of the MCU movies thus far. Whedon's NYC battle in The Avengers is beautifully shot and developed, but cannot compare to the well composed set pieces found in The Winter Soldier, each leading up to the bigger whole. The Russo brothers come from a background of directing television comedies such as Arrested Development and Community, and it's extraordinary how well they handle a big budget action blockbuster from cinematography, to pacing. They do seems to some what portray their own style of comedy with fun references and a cameo other than Stan Lee, functioning properly within the confines of the tone and story. Henry Jackman (Captain Phillips; Wreck-It Ralph; X-Men: First Class) also composes an adrenaline pumping score that sets the necessary mood every time.
The biggest fault or misleading conclusion found in The Winter Soldier is that it does not address the whereabouts of other heroes or where we are in terms of the time line of the other movies. Why can't Captain America call on Tony Stark to help him out or even Hawkeye who is a member of S.H.I.E.L.D. himself? This is a recurring problem we have seen throughout Phase 2 of the MCU in Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World. Marvel Studios should quickly address this problem if they want us to continue to believe all of these characters live in the same universe together. You cannot exclude these characters once you have opened Pandora's Box. Marvel Studios has created another master piece with yet another gripping and suspenseful adaptation for fans to enjoy for years to come. Captain America: The Winter Soldier succeeds on all aspects to what a great movie should contain. It is the perfect set up for films to come and Marvel surely does not play all of their cards, which is great for future films. There is little to argue against its merits and should be described as one of the greatest superhero movies of all time.

Personally, I'm getting ready for Civil War next month by watching The Winter Soldier, and if the next Captain American movie is as good as this one, there's nothing to worry about. In The Winter Soldier, Steve Rodgers is trying to adjust to the modern world until a conspiracy involving SHIELD comes to light, but Cap also has to team up with Black Widow to battle another threat: The Winter Soldier. To me, Captain America has always been the most interesting Avenger because of how he was forced to leave behind his old life and friends, especially his old lover Peggy Carter, and adjust to life in the 21st century. It allows him to be more than just a roided-up superhero with a cool shield, and his struggle with readjustment is explored well in this movie. He also has to deal with a myriad of other significant issues like SHIELD and the Winter Soldier. The political conspiracy plot in particular adds a lot of suspense and twists to the story to make it consistently thrilling while the Winter Soldier provides a lot of great action sequences. His character is mysterious throughout the film, and he's definitely one of the better Marvel movie villains. Captain America: The Winter Soldier should certainly please even the most casual comic book movie viewer with its intense action, great plot and witty writing. I think I might need to binge watch all the MCU movies before Infinity War comes out next year. Expand

"Captain America: The Winter Soldier" 10 Scale Rating: 9.0 (Amazing) ...

The Good: Unlike any other "super hero" movie you will ever see. While other films of this genre are clearly geared more towards comic book fans, Winter Soldier is a cross-genre film that will appease movie-goers who know nothing about the character or Marvel at all. Parts action thriller, spy film, thrilling drama, and yes ... comic book film, the movie does an amazing job pulling you in no matter who you are. Despite the wider target audience, there is still plenty for the astute fan as the film is chock full of Easter eggs and references that will keep everyone very VERY happy. Possibly among the greatest super hero films ever made, second only (possibly) to Batman: The Dark Knight.

The Bad: Early on, a few of the fighting and action scenes suffer from shaky camera syndrome, which made it hard to follow what exactly happened. There is a slight need for suspension of belief during a few late action scenes as well as parts of the main plot.

As I watch Captain America Civil War,I thought It was the best Marvel movie but After I've rewatch the this,my opinion becomes different.Captain America:The Winter Soldier is still the best Marvel Movie.

The film has a great action sequences that is entertaining as hell, the movie is more serious but still has funny moments but all in all it is serious, The plot is well written and straightforward that also inspired from our real world. The characters are great in this,Black Widow was just fantastic,Nick Fury has a bigger role here and it was fascinating,Captain America is just a badass while his Alter Ego Steve Rogers was having a hard time fitting in to the new world he is living after a decades in ice those scenes were just interesting,Agent 13 and Falcon were great addition but Sam Wilson has more screen time than Agent 13 who was also underdeveloped and so thus Maria Hill.Hydra is the real villain here with the leadership of Alexander Pierce and their secret weapon the titled character who was just compelling and who happens to be cap's friend making Cap conflicted about it.The performances were fantastic in the film, all of them,no one did wrong, and no one felt shoehorned for a commercial of an upcoming film(Spider-man was shoehorned in Civil War but because he was well executed,we didn't feel like it).

All in all the film was great, the plot has a clearer focus than civil war,the action set pieces are also clear and well executed, the characters are entertaining to watch, the music score is fine for this film. The balanced humor and seriousness well and the dialogue was well written.Captain America:The Winter Soldier is far superior movie than Civil War but that's just me.

A 70s style political thriller is not something you'd expect from the MCU, especially not one that works. But insane action, a great original soundtrack and a developed plot with some serious themes makes it all possible (as does a bloody excellent performance from Chris Evans.) The Russo brothers craft the characters and the villain really well, but unusually the action is what has you most gripped here. It's so gritty, it'll have you on the edge of your seat
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: Does the heavy plot and action take away some of the 'Marvel soul' that make these movies human?
VERDICT: One of the MCU's best without a doubt. The grittiest comic book film in a long time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In a year when I was hyped to see The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Trust me its day is coming). i was blown away by how much effort and how thought provoking the subject manner is. This is Marvels version of "The Dark Knight" as it dives into subjects that very few superhero stories go to. Captain America is conflicted with his role as an American icon as he realizes that the America he fought for in World War II is not the same America as it is today. He figures out that America is more secretive than it was in its earlier days and his ideals are challenged like Batman before him. Every pearson he knows is either dead or withering away in their old age which makes the character have a tragic backstory but he still has a sense of optimism that few other heroes have. This is the film that made me realize why Captain America has lasted for so long. That is because he represents the ideals that America strives for and not necessarily it's Government. He is even challenged on a personal level when he is fought against his sole opposite the Winter Solider. Like the Captain, he is a solider that fights for his form of government but unlike his counterpart, he was forced into the experimentation which perfectalty reflects the major differences between the two forms of government. It is also a challenge when the Winter Solider was reveled to be Captain America's old war fiend Bucky Barnes. The revelation of Hydra pulling the strings in U.S politics might be seen as silly but it is a nice allegory statement about how America has become more fascist as it is about to kill innocent people for things that they might do instead of what they would actually do. Said reveal is so intriguing and so mind boggling that it reminded me of the interaction between Raiden and the Patriot A.Is from "Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty". In fact both stories have very similar themes. The only problems that I have is that I wish the Winter Solider was more developed and the "death" of Nick Fury had no emotional weight because I knew they would never kill him off. Despite this the film is full of political intrigue and action sequences are spectacular to see and it is a film that adds to the universe. Expand

It's also the rare sequel that somehow manages to improve on an already great first installment. Anthony and Joe Russo wisely give this comic book tale a topical, politically-charged twist. The story itself plays out more like a spy thriller than that of a typical superhero adventure. The action has a real sense of weight to it, and that makes you care more about what happens to the characters.

Chris Evans continues to shine as Captain America, and Scarlett Johansson really comes into her own as Black Widow here. Anthony Mackie adds levity to the surprisingly dramatic events, and Robert Redford brings the appropriate amount of gravitas. Overall, The Winter Soldier is a smart and thrilling superhero movie that doesn't strictly stick to formula, allowing it to feel fresh. The action is superb and the performances are uniformly great. It's one of the very best MCU movies.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is a well paced, action filled movie that brings the political aspect to it, what I Always like. The debut of the Russo brothers, who have changed the MCU forever with this movie and the movies they would later direct as well. This movie takes a toll on Captain America & co. Great fights, and the twist that The Winter Soldier is Steve's lost friend Bucky was totally unexpected (when i first saw the movie). This is one of my most beloved movie in the MCU. Expand

ItI am not a comic book expert, but there is something I can guarantee: this film deserves our full attention. If "Captain America: First Avenger" turned out to be pleasant and full of quality, this film proved to be a worthy continuation. It will not be correct to say that I was surprised: Marvel has provided us with excellent productions, and it is difficult, therefore, to keep expectations low. However, in the end, I was satisfied.

The plot goes back to Steve Rogers' past to reveal the existence of a rival to his height: the Winter Soldier, a super soldier, like Captain America, whose origins and past are closely related to Rogers. I don't know if this story is faithful to what is told in the comic books, but I also feel that, for me, it doesn't matter. The plot is developing well, with space for action and the fight scenes are good and seem real.

Chris Evans returns to the role of Captain America, and he is skilled, heroic and energetic. Samuel L. Jackson and Robert Redford also do an excellent job, at the level of the best they have done so far in their long careers. Scarlett Johansson and Anthony Mackie seem to have received characters tailored to them, especially Johansson. Sebastian Stan is good, but he didn't get my attention much. Emily VanCamp is good, but her character is not very relevant and is not very interesting.

But where this film really excelled was in the quality of production values, and the most technical aspects. Cinematography, for example, is sharp, elegant, with excellent filmmaking and an absolute command of color, movement, and shadows, which make the film visually extraordinary. Add to that the grandeur of the visual effects, the latest generation CGI and, of course, the action and fighting scenes, and the result is overwhelming. The sets and costumes also deserve a note of great praise: I especially liked the sets at the Avengers headquarters, a futuristic and elegant complex that seems to have been taken from an urban planning project in an Asian city. The aircraft also look magnificent and impress. The soundtrack, on the other hand, is quite good, it fits perfectly in the film, but I confess that it was not in my ear and that I did not find it particularly memorable.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is one of my personal favorites in the MCU. Bucky Barns (Sebastian Stan) is just straight up badass. The movie excels in storytelling and has a really good plot: a spy-centric thriller in a superhero movie? YES! The reveal that Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) is The Winter Soldier is just amazing and creates a really good conflict for Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) to deal with. The CGI was sometimes a bit dodgy but not bad at all. Action scenes were very well choreographed and some actually had depth to them instead of just being an action scene. The plot point where Hydra has been operating as a parasite within S.H.I.E.L.D. was also executed very well and had real weight to it: It's going to change the upcoming movie a lot. As I said: It's one of my personal favorites in the MCU and it will surely satisfy other moviegoers.

I really like Captain America's simplicity. He does not shoot out lasers from his hands like Iron Man, he does not stick on walls like Spider-Man, he does not have absolute accuracy like Hawkeye, he does not have psychic powers like Doctor Strange and he isn't a Superman clone like Captain Marvel (although he's also supposed to be the poster boy of America who fought a billionaire). He's just a very strong man. His only weapon is a shield. Not even a sword, just a shield. It's a way of saying that his arms are no less than a sword. He doesn't fight long range. That's how much he trusts his skills.

His costume is also very simple. It does not have any cape or coat. And unlike the comics, the MCU costume doesn't even have wings. They are just drawn on his helmet. And in this movie his costume is made even more sleek. I didn't like the stripes part from his costume. It looks too soft. It's like if he's stabbed over there he would die instantly. So this costume over here made that problem finish, plus it looks a lot more futuristic. I really wished Captain America only wore this costume.

Another thing that shows Captain America's simplicity is the introduction to Falcon. Since The Avengers had already established that all the superheroes are now good friends of each other, this was the movie which could have shown their first partnership since the big team up movie (this was later done by Ant-Man instead for Falcon). But instead of calling them, Steve trusts a new friend, someone he made friends with while he was out on a jog, something similar to what the people used to do back in the mid 20th century. He also calls Black Widow for the action (ugh!), and together they find Hydra.

In the end Captain America fights with the Winter Soldier, but instead of giving an actual fight, he tries pursuing him into giving up, something we won't expect a hero of such calibre to do. The fight scenes in this movie are pretty good, but what should I tell you? I mean it's a movie with Captain America, Black Widow AND Falcon. So there are over a dozen jump cuts every second during the fight scenes. This is the reason why I hate Natasha so much. She fights with so many scene cuts and never takes a single hit. She is the reason why I removed one star from my rating.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the best movie that came from phase 2 in my opinion. It completely outshadows its prequel and sets the correct tone for the additional characters in the future movies without causing too much disruption. It leaves many memorable scenes and has a very good story. I wasn't expecting to be disappointed from a Captain America movie because I like him for his simplicity, but I wasn't expecting to say it's gonna be one of the best MCU movies either. I'd definitely want to give it a rewatch if I get a Disney+ Hotstar subscription.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Winter Soldier is a treat to watch. The movie has fantastic cast performances from both the lead and supporting actors and some of the best action sequences we’ve seen in the MCU. The chemistry between Evans and Johansson is terrific and injects a lot of humor into a film with an otherwise very serious and mysterious nature. Winter Soldier does a great job of balancing emotions, character arcs and furthering along the MCU storyline through moments that may not seem too important upon a first viewing. Anthony Mackie is a welcome addition to the movie as Sam Wilson and he also has nice chemistry with Evans, setting him up well for future appearances as the character. The best thing about this movie is how it turns into a political thriller with a twist that has massive ramifications for the future of the MCU. The twist is well written into the story and is sure to keep viewers engaged, interested and invested in the characters and the franchise. Winter Soldier is also an uncommon instance where the sequel does better than its predecessor, in this case much better. There are some instances where scene continuity is questionable, but those instances take little away from the film. Winter Soldier to this day remains one of the best films in the MCU and set a bar for sequels that is difficult to live up to. Expand

Because it's fun for me and I enjoy watching it from the bottom of my heart. Just like the previous phase and the previous work, this one is the best phase 2 movie after Guardians of the Galaxy. .
I said last time that the action sequences and special effects were not very interesting, but here they are great! Especially the elevator sequence. It is unique. I remember the panels of Jack Kirby's comics. Because they are creative.
Exactly the strong points of the last time have come here as well. However, you have to think more about the villain of the movie. The last time was great. Robert Redford's acting is great here as well. But his plan is a bit clichéd. But it was creative and made that sense of Zero to fully understand the hero.
Another problem he had was this: around minute 95 of the movie, there is a sequence where the captain says impressive sentences behind the podium. And that's where the SHIELD agents find out the truth and go to help him. But not thinking that the sound is recorded? So why are they being trained?
However, the movie has different characters like Nick Fury or Black Widow in the movie and gives them an effective role.

For me, the only issues I had was some action scenes where it was just stupid. What I mean is, it is that classic hundred guys shooting at one person and that person never gets hit or just a minor wound. There was many cliche moments. Thankfully the corn ball issues that can happen in super hero movies was kept down, not totally gone, but at okay levels.

The plot was good and the acting was in general good. The did use shaky cam at times during action scenes. If you really hate that, you may want to skip this movie. They do not do it a ton, but enough to annoy people who hate that.

As you would expect, the special effects were solid overall. Not to often did it had a video game feel.

If you are expecting an original story with amazing acting, this is not for you. If you are looking for a popcorn flick for a fun time, this is a good choice. I do think Marvel is going to have to find ways to make the movies a little harder to predict if they do not want people to get burned out on them.

While I thought it had more action and "badassery" it felt like it was a bit void of the developmental elements that made the first film strong. I also thought there was a bit too much humor early on. The Falcon character is where the lack of development hurt the most as he felt forced on us. It felt like he existed only to make certain scenes and plot points possible. To me, that's lazy writing. Either develop him more and add a bit more time to the film or leave him out entirely and find different ways to make things happen. I also thought Scar Jo's character still lacked much development. She had more screen time than in any of the previous movies but I think her and Cobie Smulder's character, agent Hill, continue to be the most underutilized characters in the series. Nonetheless, the action and special effects were amazing and the acting was good enough. Expand

This new story of The Cap is brought into the modern world and it’s fun seeing him deal with how much the world has changed, but at the same time how much it has stayed the same. The script is well written. It is filled with great relevant social commentary about our government and major organizations and how they preserve freedom by reistricting it. However, while the script is fairly heavy, it does manage to have enough fun Marvel humor that we’ve all come to love.

One thing in particular that I love about this movie is that it gives a lot of respect to its characters. The Captain himself is show to be more than just a leader. He can hold his own, but is also a great human being. Chris Evans has finally owned the character and it’s hard seeing anyone else play him. We also get more backstory to Natasha a.k.a Black Widow. It allows the audience to connect with her on an emotional level. Same goes for Nick Fury. The Winter Soldier is a pretty awesome villain, who I believe to be the best villain from the Marvel Cinematic universe only behind Loki.

Overall, “Captain America:The Winter Soldier” is a fairly entertaining and surprisingly thought provoking movie that is stepping up the quality of the modern superhero movie genre. It has everything from great characters, to an engaging and honest story, to some of the best action we’ll get this year. My only gripe with the film would be the heavy use of shaky cam during the action sequences. Other than that, it is a a movie that you go and see in theaters today. Also, stay after the credits there is a big reveal that will surely get everyone excited for The Avengers 2. I give 4/5

I really hated the first Capta film, I felt is was more Capta in Limbo than Capta in America.
well to be honest it sent me to sleep. the story of some puppet idiot who wants to go off and take orders from a corrupt imperialist government, OK the USA were the heroes in WW2 but I generally get the stink of false heroism when I hear about the USA today so didn't really like the story about the super soldier. the first film sent me to sleep, SO I had no interest in this film initially, until my friend convinced me to watch it.

I was quite surprised as right from the start the film was suggesting Capta's disagreement with the way the USA was going. He seemed to be at odds with what America has become and so I really started to take an interest. As the film continued I was really impressed at the themes they were exploring and grew to really like Capta and his stance. I started to understand that Capta embodies the true American spirit ; the idea of America that I admired from an early age. The character were quite interesting and although some of them were pretty predictable, there were a couple of times in this film where I was truly surprised. The movement of Capta and the other characters was really impressive, nothing at all like a Michael Bay film where you can't follow the action at all. this was all very clean movement and was very well choreographed. the action sequences were quite exciting and not dumbed down IMO. All in all, this movie turned me into a fan of Capta and now I want to read his comic book about the 'Civil War'.

His first encounter with the modern world saw him running through Times Square, confused and scared. Next, he assembled with some other Superheroes to save the world from the disgruntled brother of a fellow Avenger. In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Cap faces off against an internal threat and an organization that is just as powerful as S.H.I.E.L.D, as well as a familiar face and new adversary from his past. Life is rough for Cap. On top of everything, he is still trying to find a way to successfully assimilate himself into present day society. You think saving the world is hard? Try figuring out the internet, getting back on the dating scene, and making new friends at the age of ninety-five. Thankfully, there are only a few things Cap needs to get through the day; his trusty vibranium shield and his handy notepad with a slew of suggestions for catching up with the last seventy years, and Cap is ready to take on the world–or corrupt government organizations. Either or, Cap is always ready to save the day, even if he has to take a beating while doing it.

When I first became aware that the directing/producing brothers behind episodes of ’Community’ and You, Me and Dupree were going to be responsible for extending the Captain America canon, I may have gotten a little worried. Thinking that Joe and Anthony Russo were going to follow in the same footsteps as Captain America: The First Avenger director Joe Johnson, focusing more on the comedy and special effects of the Superhero genre and less with the complex, unflinching patriotic mentality of America’s greatest super soldier, the Russo brothers sure proved me wrong. It’s movies like these that make happy to swallow my words and stand corrected, knowing that audience members are able trust that the television medium is one that can be used as an adequate platform towards advancing characters in film as well.

Substituting as much VFX work as possible for a very organic and old-school action approach, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is certainly the best Phase Two Marvel film so far, and may perhaps be the standard film to compete against in a post-Avengers film world, or at least up until the Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Always on a mission, it seems that Cap lives to work, not works to live. Especially since he has been in deep sleep for the last little while. While the United States government is surely getting the most out of their ridiculously expensive investment, the government trusts that their super solider is never compromised and his dedication and hard work to his country is never skewed. When a secret organization with similar interests to those of S.H.I.E.L.D threaten to kill twenty million people, Cap is sent to fight at sea, on land, and in the air. Accompanied by his trusty sidekick Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), the two seem to always be pitted within the same missions but always having ulterior motives. Commanded by their one-eyed superior Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), S.H.I.E.L.D must face off against their most ruthless enemy yet.

One of the biggest issues I will continue to have with Marvel’s stand-alone films from now on, is the fact that once conflict reaches a certain level of danger, like lets say a global level, I will always ask, “Where the heck are the Avengers? And if not the Avengers, where is Tony Stark? The Hulk? Someone? Anyone?” No problem could be too big for the super-powered team of freedom fighting Superheroes. This is one film where I questioned the presence of Tony Stark? Was he just waiting to see what Cap would do on the other side of the country while he sat at home on his couch?

Essentially, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a team effort in crime fighting, with Black Widow and Sam Wilson/The Falcon (Anthony Mackie) helping out are star-spangled Superhero this time around, Cap sure doesn’t seem to be without powerful friends. What was also refreshing was finally seeing Nick Fury get in on the action, providing the film with one of the best car chase scene Marvel ever assembled. One of the virtues of Captain America: The Winter Soldier stands by is the fact that, you don’t need to wear a mask to be a Superhero–which might explain why Cap always insists on removing his.

At times, the film may seem like Marvel’s take on Minority Report anticipating danger before it even happens, and upholding the idea of ‘peace’ for the sake of the world. But as the Head of S.H.I.E.L.D operations ironically points out, “peace is not an achievement, its a responsibility”. So when S.H.I.E.L.D is corrupted from the inside, right under their noses and Cap is left to face-off against a super-soldier baddie, later known as the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), the organization really has some explaining to do.

The plot is involving, the characters are well written, and the action is shockingly exciting. I'd say it's a substantial improvement over the solid, but uninspired, original. It gets off to a really good start with a secret mission to board a massive ship. I was surprised at how brutal the action was, but in a good way. Usually Marvel tries to sugar coat it a little too much. It's all very exciting and surprisingly well done, but I do have a few qualms. The action isn't nearly as grounded in reality as Nolan's Batman trilogy, and the plot doesn't delve quite as deeply into the dark side of humanity either. Also, towards the end, the action packed climax did begin to bore me a little bit. It was just a little too repetitive with the massive explosions and people falling. Overall however, the movie still emerges as one of the smartest, most viscerally thrilling, and engaging films of the genre, which when considering the endless supply of examples to chose from, is no small feat. How delighted then to come out of the cinema with more than a satisfied grin plastered on my face. Its a big call but this Captain America is most likely the best of the Marvel films yet.
This Steve Rogers(Cap) has a new world to experiment with and the film finds balance (not quite as superficially as you would think) between his struggle between doing the 'right' thing and his political beliefs and notions. It also might help him to listen to Nirvana and watch The Empire Strikes Back. Theres much research to be done, especially after the events after The Avengers, but again Cap is thrown into an unprecedented situation.
Action set pieces are tight and well choreographed with some innovative fights, not to mention one spectacularly intense scene involving Nick Fury(Sam Jackson) and his accessorized heavy vehicle.
This is bone on bone and you can hear every crushing detail, and despite a flurry of CGI towards the end, a lot of it is of the practical variety. As an action heavy thriller it really is cracking stuff and plays out like a hybrid of The Fugitive meets Mission Impossible 3.
I expect great things from the Russo brothers, the directors and they hopefully will helm more action films in the future.
Robert Redford is a nice touch and brings a shady, 1970's conspiracy vibe, Scarlett Johansson seems to deliver her lines wonderfully and kicks butt with the rest of them and Mackies The Falcon is given a decent back story where i couldn't help thinking it was his The Hurt Locker character somehow transcended into this film.
There is some cookie cutter stuff at times with the dialogue and a cliched reveal that smelt of the film makers wimping out for the sake of audiences rejoicing in such conspicuous fanfare but all in all this is a very surprising and engaging film that serves the cannon of Marvel very well indeed. Now, where to purchase one of those shields!

Who would have though that a movie by Marvel, could be politically astute and suspenseful. And it truly is superior with it's predecessor.

The first thing that really did blow my mind of while watching The Winter Soldier is the CGI, so spectacular, a big improvement since the First Avenger. Just as the CGI, the 3D is incredible, even though there isn't that much 3D-effects. The basic of Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the political/thriller environment, and I didn't expect that in movie by Marvel, so I really got a surprise while watching The Winter soldier, and I think it's wonderful to have such genres in a universe full of superheroes. The story in The Winter Soldier is well thought out, and it really is something wonderful and unique about it.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a highly entertaining, cool and groovy movie from Marvel, and combined with an awesome soundtrack isn't there much negative things about this film. Unfortunately there are some tiny, but important mistakes that made the film (from my perspective) weird. One of these is the high amount of destruction combined with defeat. My explanation is that while sitting in the cinema watching this film, I felt wastefulness in the film, with all the destruction and devastation, what a waste! Another thing that's bad in The Winter Soldier is the ending, it could have been more exiting and entertaining, even though the post-credits scene is awesome! Even though I thought Captain America: The Winter Soldier would be incredible to watch, and that I later was a bit disappointed, I still think Marvel did a hell of a job, especially that they succesfully combined the genres science fiction and action with political thriller.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier got many awesome parts, but at the same time a number of fundamental flaws.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier gets a 8.4/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There’s no point in denying that the new Captain America movie is anything less than another instalment in the superhero saturation of the last ten years, but although the Captain himself has been considered the blandest of the bunch, at least as far as The Avengers (2012) is concerned. It’s still a fantastic world of unbelievable stunts and perfectly timed one-liners, but the new film offers a lot more depth than some of the weaker superhero fare on offer.

In addition to the ambitious Marvel Cinematic Universe, the rich tapestry of interwoven stories that Disney’s Marvel Studios has been crafting at the rate of about two blockbusters a year since 2008’s Iron Man, we have seen everything from the unrelated narratives of Marvel’s Spiderman and X-men series, to the gritty reboots of rival DC classics like Superman and Batman. The Marvel Universe alone is an unprecedented shared universe multimedia franchise, extending from the silver screen to various short films, television series and tie-in comic books.

Wanton American patriotism is far from internationally popular, and the challenge with Captain America as a character is to give this bastion of United States glory modern appeal. The first film took the character back to his roots, giving us a brilliant pulp action adventure, set during the character’s 1940s heyday.

This was an easy place to be Captain America, but after being dragged into the twenty first century in time for The Avengers, Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) must work out what America stands for today, and decide what he represents. The temporal displacement is a rich vein to be mined for soul searching and character interpretation.

As a pawn of SHIELD, the superhero intelligence organisation: our Nazi-punching hero has been reduced to a shady covert operative who is unsure if the missions he is sent on are aiding or abetting the forces of evil. This insecurity comes to a head when he learns of SHIELD’s Project Insight, a sinister initiative which operates under the twin axes of surveillance and pre-emptive strikes, undeniably referencing drone controversy and the concerns over US internal surveillance. Thus The Winter Soldier is an espionage thriller, firmly rooted in modern day concerns, but with a style heavily influenced, according to the directors, by cold war conspiracy thrillers from the 1970s.

Events are still very much rooted in the events of the first film, mysterious forces have been working in the background since the end of the war, and the Captain finds himself battling enemies both old and new. Symbolically, he trades his brand new twenty first century black and navy blue uniform for his bright red, white and blue wartime clobber before the film is out.

As is the case with many comic book movies, I am impressed to learn that much which transpires on screen, no matter how incredible or brief, is in fact distilled from the original comics over their seventy year history. I’m certainly not the one to personally notice all this detail, but it’s apparently crammed full of nods to various eras, arcs and character backgrounds.

The characterisation of Falcon, real name Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), was strong. An Air Force veteran, he shares Rogers’ military background and helps him adjust to the modern world. Later, he demonstrates his loyalty when he is called upon once the Captain becomes a fugitive.

Of course, the question having over every post-Avengers solo movie is why characters neglect to call in their superpowered chums to save the day in a fraction of the time. There is a slight aversion in that Captain America does spend the whole film working closely with fellow Avenger Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), who has been largely sidelined in her previous appearances. The truth is that having fewer lead characters mean more attention can be given to others, and Johansson is finally given some significant screen time. Black Widow’s alluring presence is welcome throughout, her moral ambiguity and chequered past providing a stark contrast to the Captain’s clear cut integrity.

Similarly, SHIELD director Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) is much more important to the story than the cameo status he has held until now. By contrast, the eponymous Winter Soldier, a bionic badass bearing Soviet livery has little screen time, initially filling the role of unbeatable enforcer to the villains, and the only individual strong enough to challenge the Captain, but his tragic presence is vital to the overarching saga. Also noteworthy is Robert Redford’s appearance as a sinister SHIELD executive.

Freedom, the most American of values, nevertheless carries a global relevance, and remains a major theme, but any overt patriotism is relatively, and wisely downplayed, despite the character’s name and apparent raison d’être. What’s left is a solid conspiracy blockbuster, with the superhero status incidental aside from enabling higher octane action sequences than a subtler spy movie.

Since Joe Johnston didn't direct this one, it doesn't have that corny historic feel to it kinda like the first one did. Instead, this one takes a much darker turn and allows for much greater plot development. Chris Evans once again fulfills the title role nicely, as does Scarlett Johansson, who returns as Black Widow. I was also glad to see Samuel L. Jackson in this one reprising his Nick Fury role. There were also some good new cast additions, like Robert Redford. Great action sequences, along with a cool new villain really made this a great addition to the series of standalone Avenger films before Avengers 2 hits theaters next year. It's certainly not the best standalone film, but it's pretty high up there. And yes, there are two post-credit scenes at the end. Expand

It develops the characters, expand the mythology, provides an abundance of visually spectacular action, and references the zeitgeist of our time without being overly polemic or allegorical. It's a thriller with a lot of twists and turns, and the stakes, while high in any comic book movie, feel more meaningful than in any of the other Marvel films. Despite all that, it doesn't take itself too seriously, and mixes in some insider references and comic book gags successfully.

Highlights include an authentic (to a point) engagement of the Washington, DC scenery, the new character (Falcon) engaging Cap based on shared military service, some smart moments for Black Widow, and the legitimate creepiness of the tactfully used titular Winter Soldier. This is the best acting I've seen from the extant Marvel characters (Cap, Widow, Fury), but the additions of Falcon and the Robert Redford character are also immediately credible. The direction is smooth, and the visuals impressive.

The few lowlights include moments where they cheated the DC locales and a few bits where the comic book logic cause eyes to roll. Some will be disappointed at the ending which, while not a cliffhanger, does promise another movie. To me though, this movie's story was complete, and I don't mind waiting for the next one.

To me, this is the best comic book movie since The Dark Knight; including the (overrated) Avengers. Not quite a cultural icon or a piece of high art, but an entertaining, intelligent, and well-produced film that augurs good things for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
