For what ever reason this movie was hyped when it turned out to be like the average super hero movie. I'm not going to lie, its probably at the same level Thor was. This movie did not give the viewer anything special or anything that made it worth watching. Just some mediocre action and typical mediocre comedy at some parts. Expand

The historical periods were inaccurate and a distraction to the movie. Tommy Lee Jones was able to put on a good performance but his age limited the impact of his character. The 3D version did not mesh with the time period of the movie and there were nary any spots giving 3D excitement. The 2D version would have given the movie a more authentic look. The direction was good but the script needed more work. And finally, Captain America was unable to raise the hair on the back of my neck. I was left wanting for that feeling of cheering and being proud of the hero. Expand

There are, however, other more significant elements in the film itself that ensured it would always fall below expectations, the most obvious flaw being the lack of a 'race against time' element. The viewer can expect a lot of action, which is extremely well done and has become what we expect of Marvel superhero films recently, but it becomes wearisome and it is not until the final stages of the film that the viewer can enjoy a suspense-fuelled action sequence. This is as good as the film gets. To reach this point though, the viewer will have to endure a slow-pace mid-sequence, in which the director succumbs to cliche filming techniques such as montages to keep the film moving forward but failing to engage the viewer effectively. Hugo Weaving takes on the role of Red Skull, a role which I feel could of been better performed by a different actor, not that Weaving performed poorly, but that the accent he donned for the role (a quasi-German/Russian) was at times laughable and took the audience completely out of the story. We also a large stock of typical characters that are almost universally used in action; there's the strong-willed female love interest (Atwell); the hard case military commander (Jones); and the ill-fated best friend (Stan). Although all of these characters are pulled off tastefully, particularly Atwell, it is somewhat predictable. The film is hampered further by a poor soundtrack, a petty point, but a good soundtrack should be a given in such a high-profile and high-budget film. For the avid comic book film fan such as myself, there are moments in Captain America that will undoubtedly have you sitting on the edge of your seat; very well delivered cameo appearances, a screenplay and plot that does the comic book justice, and a feeling of more to come. This adaption of a Marvel hero is nowhere near the standard set by other releases such as Iron Man, and can arguably be seen as the weakest release by Marvel Studios. That does not necessarily make Captain America a bad film, but it does mean that it is missing a lot. There is nothing to Captain America as a film that hasn't been done before, and nor does it do it better. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Huge Weaving and Stan Lee give the best performances of the movie. The genesis story for the Cap is pretty damn good as well, but afterwards the movie falls flat. The writing is not that great, the action doesn't make much sense (how does Captain manage to take out heavily guarded, high-tech facilities with a group of 10 dudes?) and the emotional core of the film is not there. It's not terrible by any means but it definitely digresses into a typical, poorly-written Hollywood film after a very strong beginning. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First time watching: I enjoyed seeing the backstory of Captain America for the first time, I thought it was really interesting (even though the scrawny CGI Chris Evans looked a bit jarring in some scenes). In general the first half of the movie was very good overall, and if I were to rate the movie based solely on that, I'd give it a 7/10.

...However, there are flaws, as is the case with any movie. And these may not be objective flaws, but that's not really the point of a user review. These are just things that bothered me personally:

1. I thought Schmidt's skinless appearance was really poorly done. I got the impression that he was supposed to look disfigured, but he ended up just looking like a weird red guy made of clay. I didn't like it. I also thought it came out of left field.

2. The second half of the movie was padded out with a lot of pointless action sequences that didn't move the film in any direction. It's just mindless boom pew pew pew bing bang boom. I hate this in ANY movie. I know some people get a kick out of action scenes, but in my case, it just puts me to sleep. I have a hard time paying attention to scenes like these so they just bore me.

3. The movie was too long and ended abruptly. I was hoping to see more of a reaction from Captain America to being "resurrected" 70 years later but... he just says one line and the movie cuts to black. That was very disappointing to me.

4. There was also a pointless romance subplot which I didn't really care for. I think in movies like these they just tend to pad out the runtime and it's just whatever. Bleh.

So yeah, 5/10 from me. Solid backstory but the main plot of the movie and the villain are not that great.

Even though Chris Evans is good as the character, Captain America is definitely one of the more worse Avengers. Not as bad as Hulk though. And aside from the cool old school style and Tommy Lee Jones, the movie is also actually quite bad. Marvel continues its tradition to have a villain that sucks and side characters that aren't interesting. The movie doesn't feel like its own story, but instead a film to setup the character and tell that he's gonna be in The Avengers movie, and the fact that Marvel is using other movies to setup a movie is total wank. The script was lazy and quite mediocre at best, with inconsistent dialogue, very little semblance of time and a plot that only skimmed the surface of what could have been achieved in this world war 2 adventure flick. In one instance; montages were used to show the captain and his team's earlier missions, rather than detailed scenes showing such missions (which was unfortunate). Such script weaknesses caused underdevelopment in both the story and characters. The score was perpetual and annoying, and the acting was okay (with the exception of Weaving and Jones who were quite good), but luckily; the simple character arcs and the romance between our leads, added a little to these 2 dimensional characters. The retro production of this movie won me over completely and its pulpy qualities were nice to watch as its hardly being done now. The comic book movies of this summer comes to an end, and I must say it was a pretty average group of movies (ranging from horrible to 'okay'). I may forever be baffled as to why this film got such good reviews. But its technical attributes are easily the best of the 4 comicbook films. but it surely wasn't the best, artistically. Expand

I expected it to be amazing, and it was for about 40 Mins, until Steve turns into Captain America. The movie goes steeply down hill from that point. The pacing in the second half of the movie was terrible, and nothing makes any sense. The fight scene choreography was the worst I've ever seen in any comic book movie. In fact, i don't think there was any fight scene choreography at all. I may be a little harsh with this review but if you have one of the greatest fighters in the world wouldn't he have some sort of training? Wouldn't he have at least one memorable fight? The movie was not all bad, The main actors were quite pleasant due to good casting, except Evans. He looks perfect but his corny one liner jokes don't fit with him being Captain America. This is largely due to the director not having a clue. All of the scenes that were not super heroish, that were made to look like the early 1900's were great! The cinematography was not bad but suffered from lasers. Really bad lasers. It was like "that scene looks really nice, ..wait...no...noooo...stop....stop it...why are they shooting lasers? and why do they look worse then the lasers in the GIJoe movie?" The movie all in all was a good home rental but should have been at least an iron man level movie but came no where near. Expand

Chris Evans, with a physique so chiseled, can only carry this sinking ship so far.

Captain America: The First Avenger

Johnston's righteous passage has the key to celebrate his hero. But this hero is clearly in the wrong film. With a surrounding so incongruent to the characters, the visual effects is probably the worst enemy of the film. No matter how emotionally fueled the punches are, the picture that paints this battle pins it down to a more cartoon-ish look. On terms of writing, Christopher Marcus and Stephen McFeely, the screenwriters, who'd also carry the big responsibility of driving the Avengers franchise, had got that knack of installing style in their substance even back then.

Their script doesn't feed off on antics but elements (the challenges that the army keeps piling on, on Chris Evans, those little moments are gem-like), elements so rich and complete in their entirety that plasters a broad smile on our exhausted face every now and then. The entertaining factor isn't served upfront on the table but you have to work for it. For a brief period, when as a mentor a scientist describes the characteristics of Evan to himself, and somehow the film at that very moment seems balanced only to be tripped over by infusing it with humor in latter stages.

Evans as the worthy hero pours his soul into tight clothes, and the result is that it would be difficult for us to see someone else in this role from now on. The supporting actors like Tommy Lee Jones, Sebastian Stan, Hayley Atwell and even Hugo Weaving gets lost into the shadow of Evans, their mikes aren't attached to the speaker that reaches us. Joe Johnston, the director, has a long way to go, especially in tying up all his plots with one string, no hindrance and not an inch of lazy bone in his body, the film ought to have the ingredients that this Captain America: The First Avenger is made of, literally, "..out of a bottle."

The plot is a man named Steve Rodgers (Chris Evans) wants to join the army but is weak and small as hell so he signs up for the super soldier army as his last chance to join the army so the leaders see how serious he is and injects him with a lot of steroids anyway Schmidt and Dr. Arnim Zola harness the energies of the Tesseract, intending to use the power to fuel Zola's inventions, mounting an offensive that will change the world. Schmidt discovers Erskine's location and dispatches assassin Heinz Kruger to kill him. Erskine subjects Rogers to the super-soldier treatment, injecting him with a special serum and dosing him with "vita-rays". After Rogers emerges from the experiment taller and more muscular, an undercover Kruger kills Erskine and flees. Rogers pursues and captures Kruger, but the assassin avoids interrogation by committing suicide with a cyanide capsule. With Erskine dead and his super-soldier formula lost, U.S. Senator Brandt has Rogers tour the nation in a colorful costume as "Captain America" to promote war bonds while scientists study him and attempt to reverse-engineer the formula. In 1943, while on tour in Italy performing for active servicemen, Rogers learns that Barnes' unit was MIA in a battle against Schmidt's forces. Refusing to believe that Barnes is dead, Rogers has Carter and engineer Howard Stark fly him behind enemy lines to mount a solo rescue attempt. Rogers infiltrates the fortress of Schmidt's Nazi division Hydra, freeing Barnes and the other prisoners. Rogers confronts Schmidt, who removes a mask to reveal a red, skull-like visage that earned him the sobriquet "the Red Skull". Schmidt escapes and Rogers returns to base with the freed soldiers.
Rogers recruits Barnes, Dum Dum Dugan, Gabe Jones, Jim Morita, James Montgomery Falsworth, and Jacques Dernier to attack other known Hydra bases. Stark outfits Rogers with advanced equipment, most notably a circular shield made of vibranium, a rare, nearly indestructible metal. Rogers and his team sabotage various Hydra operations. In 1945, the team assaults a train carrying Zola. Rogers and Jones succeed in capturing Zola, but Barnes falls from the train to his assumed death.[N 3] Using information extracted from Zola, the final Hydra stronghold is located, and Rogers leads an attack to stop Schmidt from using weapons of mass destruction on major American cities. Rogers climbs aboard Schmidt's aircraft as it takes off. During the subsequent fight, the Tesseract's container is damaged. Schmidt physically handles the Tesseract, which opens a wormhole into space, sucking him into it. The Tesseract burns through the plane and is lost in the ocean. Seeing no way to land the plane without the risk of detonating its weapons, Rogers crashes it in the Arctic. Stark later recovers the Tesseract from the ocean floor but is unable to locate Rogers or the aircraft, presuming him dead.

Rogers awakens in a 1940s-style hospital room. Hearing a radio broadcast of a baseball game that he attended in 1941, Rogers deduces that something is wrong. He flees outside and finds himself in present-day Times Square, where S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury informs him that he has been "asleep" for nearly 70 years. In a post-credits scene, Fury approaches Rogers and proposes a mission to hype up the avengers. The movie was highly received then and still is now but to many things hold it back for me so 4/10

While the movie had some originality at the beginning, with the movie staying true to the WWII setting, the movie quickly veered away from that. It quickly became another bland modern action thriller. Terrible dialogue, extremely predictable (though some decent character development), this is no exception to a failing superhero genre. Expand

Oh, I got it... It's just some kind of excuse for these meaningless gunshots. "Oh, damn, is a war!" YES! The great super-hero Captain America is shown as a big brainless mass of muscles and a damned shield that I don't know HOW works against all those attacks, because it only defends his empty head!
And, of course, in the middle of all, he finds a space to kiss the girl.
No, I have no problems against the Cap, but this movie is simply useless. Made just to say that all of the Avengers have their own movies. I'll really appreciate if the Avengers movie have something smart on it, just like the Iron Man's... and unlike this Cap America's crappy thing.

But, beyond all this, if you want some movie with no commitment to physics nor background story; if you really want to face something just for fun - or maybe for some excuse to kiss in the dark of the cine - go on, but I am not responsible for the consequences

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Another Marvel Atrocity, It has a strong start, then quickly ran out of steam especially in the climax of the battle between good and evil. Red Skull was a seriously lousy villain. He was more laughable than frightening, especially his cheap looking face. The romance;. you can integrate a romantic subplot in a "superhero" movie and do it well, I've seen it done (Spider-man 2, The Dark Knight). But this was much too Thor-esque but the ending was good as necessary. And it was okay. I could live with it. UNTIL Steve chose to utter, "I'll be okay. But I had a date." or something to that effect. More corny scripting. Expand

How anyone can call this movie good is beyond me. It would be similar to calling Mc'donalds good food. You can do it but you know you're just lying to yourself.

Seems pretty obvious they just threw this together to make a few dollars, and to preface the Avengers film. What a waste of time and money. I have never cared less about a super hero, and was actually rooting for the bad guys, who were WAY cooler than the good guys. The editing and cut scenes were terrible. He runs, jumps the enormous, fire engulfed, opening, and... is running to the exit. He runs, grabs a chain to swing over dozens of enemies (all of them shooting at him) and... is running through a field. The good guys grab a bunch of the bad guy's vastly superior weapons, but when then storm the enemy's stronghold, then use weak, conventional weapons. Where did the shield material come from? How does it come back to him when he throws it? The ending was absolutely ridiculous. The ONLY saving grace of this movie was Hayley Atwell. WOW. Seeing her in that red dress gave this a couple of extra rating points. I will never get those 2 hours, or $14 back. If this is the basis of The Avengers, I may skip it! Expand

I have to admit, First half an hour for me was full of excitement and expectations from this movie, but after that I started yawning, sleeping, moving on the chair from one side to another and eventually I left the cinema. Look at movies like Ironman, X-men, Spiderman, Hulk. Those movies have not only amazing effects but also great story, actors feel their characters, authentic historical facts and language. I don't understand why Marvel made this Capt. America such an expected movie when the actors can't even learn German language, and naming the main villain Schmidt and placing there Agent Smith from Matrix is just pathetic. So therefore, this movie deserves nothing but grade 2 for effects and for Hailey Atwell, who's hot. I strongly do not recommend to go see this movie in cinema. I got a 3D glasses and I did not find one single 3D effect, so waste of money. Expand

If anything Captain America did its job and linked it to the Avengers but everything else was just so idiotic and clunky that you can't enjoy the ride. However before I finish mocking the very core of this piece of tripe I have to say Tommy Lee Jones eating steak has to be one of the most captivating things I have seen in recent history. Its just too bad that great actors like Jones, the other Jones and Weaving had to get involved in a movie without anything going for it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Realistically, I would score this movie about a 4, but I feel obligated to drop it to a 1 just to counteract the inflated scores this garbage has been racking up. I'm baffled as to how this movie got such positive reviews. I can forgive the high audience reviews, because, let's face it, most people are dumb and can't recognize a bad movie when they see it...but, I don't get how the professional critics could have scored this movie so well. This was, quite simply, not a very good movie. The beginning was pretty good, as there was some decent story and character development starting to happen...but once he transforms into Captain America, the movie just turns into a typical corn-ball, over-the-top Hollywood turd. There are some pretty big plot holes. A lot of questions, and some things that are just too difficult to believe ruin any credibility that the first part of the movie had built up. How can Red Skull attach a perfectly realistic human face to his skull in the 1940's?...they can't even do a very good face transplant in 2011, yet Red Skull had a detachable "Hugo Weaving face" that just popped on and off like a Halloween mask...cheesy...bad writing. Then there's the mysterious "blue cube" which is never really explained...they just give the cheap comic book explanation "it's just a mysterious cube of great power, and we don't need to explain it because it's not important that our movie be believable or credible" cheesy...bad writing. Then there's the fact that Captain America has a shield that he can throw from great distances, and it always inexplicably returns to him like some kind of magical boomerang..no explanation as to how the shield does this...cheesy...terrible writing. Just because the shield can do this in the comics doesn't mean you don't have to explain it in the movie. Then there's the fact that Captain America crashes a plane into the icy ground and they just dig him out decades later and bring him back to life...and he hasn't aged a day no explanation...we're just supposed to accept all of this terrible writing and not question it...sorry, Hollywood, I demand better quality from my movies and this will be the last super hero trash I see from you. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I could not stand this movie. I hated the character of captain America and the story. But most of all it was just stupid and didn't make any sense Germans with instant kill machine gun lasers and laser tanks vs American riflemen with single shot rifles, but of course only one American dies and the massive army of high tech laser carrying Germans all die. Hated this movie and i left feeling that i had payed to watch American propaganda. (also i hated that they basically didn't include Britain at all except for one very over the top Englishmen) Expand

No need to poke the history of creating films of this type of hostility. In my opinion, a very cheap imitation of BATMAN. Pretty much to not enter a category.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I love action, I love fiction and I love a passionate story. Mix it all and a movie should receive 5 or more points. Captain America failed in all mentioned categories. Its not its spider-man-like story: good loser turns into super hero why the story became an abomination: Its just that it is predictable: The brave scientist which gets shot, the best friend which can not be saved although mighty Cptn. is super strong, the only girl in the story is the heros passion. Now add some James Bond gadgets coming from nowhere and you have an invincible hero. Not that they at first have to fight enemies with über-guns, they werent even surprised by what the enemy threw at them. Alas the bad guy could have saved the movie, but it was just too obvious that the impersonation of evil was played by "Mr. Smith" from Matrix: He looks like him, he acts like him, and even his metamorphosis to a red-skinned-something was just invented to pretend to have a real bad ass. In fact the bad guys act as stupid as the good guy and are nothing but cannon fodder. What was wrong with the fiction: Bad guy made through almost the same as the good guy to get his evil powers. Only difference one has a pure heart the other has not. Bad guy discovers a divine energy thingy but this does not help him either. It was just put into the movie to be able to make up some special FX with laser guns which would not have been common at the time the movie plays. The only thing needed for the good guys to block the special FX weapon is a shield from a metal which you never-heard-before and is indistructable. Funny thing: Its painting looks worn out after being shot at some times. So if you saw Matrix 3 and liked the movie because of the action, well this is what was good about Matrix 3. Cptn. Americas action is about a guy sneaking into an enemy base with a stars-and-stripes-painted shield - at least it wasnt glowing - and then beating up all enemies. Every 5th enemy is hit by the shield which behaves like a boomerang and returns to Cptn. America just in time to block the next blow. Btw. the only thing the Cptn. is afraid of is not the super powers of the enemy, nor the mysterious weapons which can dematerialize you within an instant when being hit, no, its flame throwers which make him duck and cover. At least: if you still want to watch the movie: look out for about its three funny scenes. Its not that its worth seeing them, its just makes you hope that there will be more. Expand

It didn't take long to realize that they weren't going to cough up any good dialogue, so I hoped that at least the combat would be okay --- It wasn't. The good guy just walks into a nazi base and punches lackey after lackey and throws his shield at them a few times (It comes back...? Okay... Wow none of them shot you while you waited for it to come back! Nice!) There was no tension at any moment, no doubt that his strategy of simply beating the bad guys up would have to be re-thought. The fact that this movie has such high reviews is indicative of the times. People don't want substance, they want a clear, simple to follow plot. Expand
