Disclosure: I am a Cap (and Avengers) fanboy from waaaaay back, so I was a little apprehensive about this film; I still bear the scars from watching the Matt Salinger Captain America - Roger Corman's FF movie is the only thing that could make the 1990 Cap movie look good. Needless to say, I was well-pleased with the treatment ol' winghead gets this time around. The decision to make this a period piece was a good one, and the film pulls it off convincingly. The characterizations were generally good, though I thought Howard Stark did not come off as quite the genius that is implied in other Marvel flicks. Chris Evans is Steve Rogers in the way that Chris Hemsworth became Thor - it's hard to see anyone else in the role (this goes without saying for Robert Downy / Tony Stark).

Translating a comic book to the big screen is a delicate affair; at face value a comic book can be a silly thing - folks running around in pajamas beating the bejeebus out of the bad guys - but to make a good movie you have treat the subject seriously. Marvel has been able to strike this balance (with a few exceptions - Daredevil, Ghost Rider, and X3 I'm looking at you...) and Captain America is another success. Definitely in the top 4 or 5 comic book movies - looking forward to May 2012!

My 6 year old son rates it "as good as Iron Man" - the highest of high praise. 9 year old daughter concurs, though she liked Thor better.

I watched this movie yesterday.
I'm Japanese, so I'm not good at listening to music, however, it was easy to understand.
So I could enjoyed it.
It was very exciting!

Well-casted, fast-paced and groundbreaking, but without feeling empty or forgettable, 'Captain America' is a fine example of what a blockbuster should be, but rarely is.

It's pretty damn cool how they weave the story to allows for CA's appearance in a daft red, white & blue costume, and as a whole the film adopts a pretty fresh approach to the typical superhero scenarios and dilemmas. The arch villain is very cool, and the film itself had a great balance and mixture of comic book fantasy and WW2 "realism" too. It can feel at times as if it's nothing more than a pre-cursor to The Avengers, but it's one which is done well and entertains plenty in the process. Check it out. Expand

And this one is great! I wasn't a fan of the overly CGI home-world of Thor but ol' Cap's backstory, origins were fantastic and sublimely filmed by Joe Johnston who's had a bumpy career thus far, some hits and some misses, but here he's given us a fairly grounded but still over the top (it IS comic book material overall) romp through the origins of our first Avenger... Oh, and the heartbreaking final line actually made me shed a tear and I fricken HATE when movies turn me into a sap ball. The highlight was seeing Dobby as a Nazi super villain, well, he wasn't very super but his superior, Red Skull, was. Expand

ThatI thought this movie was really good but it definitely wasn't the "best superhero movie ever" like so many people have proclaimed. They could've developed some of the characters beyond Steve and Peggy more and given the movie more depth. That would've made certain character deaths more meaningful. The action sequences, while not as impressive as some of the other superhero movies, were still awesome in their own right and the fight scenes were fairly entertaining. The ending could've been a lot more emotional as well. I'm not asking for sobbing and ridiculous crying but if you actually think about what was happening, having some more emotion would've made it feel more genuine and authentic. Chris Evans is great as Captain America though. His role doesn't call for the darkness of Bruce Wayne or the charisma of Tony Stark but it does call for a certain level of confidence and straightforwardness and arrogance. Chris Evans hits all of those well. One of the few other weak parts was the villain. The Red Skull just wasn't all that terrifying or intimidating. Sure, he wanted to "take over the world" but nothing really made him uniquely evil other than his skinless head. All in all though, this was a very good movie and while it wasn't as good as the other Avengers films in my opinion, it is still better than most action movies around. Expand

Plot: Steve Rogers is an American citizenCaptain America: The First Avenger is the first movie timelined throughout the Marvel cinematic universe. Chris Evans does a great job of portraying Marvel's first fictional superhero/Steve Rogers. Plot: Steve Rogers is an American citizen within the year 1942 during WW2. He is dedicated to serving his country yet doesn't have the right physical build to enlist as an American soldier. When Dr. Erskine (Stanley Tucci) realizes that he is dedicated to his country he gives him a chance and changes his life forever when he gives him the chance to participate in his super soldier program. However, while Dr. Eskine was in Germany perfecting his super soldier serum, Johann Schmidt (Hugo Weaving), the leader of Hydra, a subdivsion of Hitler's army; becomes interested and forcefully injects himself with it becoming the unnaturally strong, and evil Red Skull. Schmidt also finds the tesseract, a blue glowing cube capable of unlimited energy. Schmidt uses this to evolve his weapons at an unreasonable rate posing bigger threats throughout the war. As Rogers becomes Captain America, he sets out on a campaign to end Schmidt's reign of terror as part of his duty as an American soldier. Opinion: believalbly set in WW2 with a great blend of fiction throughout reminds the world how terrifying WW2 really was, and that hope could be found even in the darkest of times. Well done, I reccomend it for anyone involved in WW2 and for those patriotic to America, I also reccomend it for anyone who wants to introduce themselves to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Expand

It also is extremely patriotic and is like, "'Merica! **** yeah!" which fits the movie perfectly. I mean for gods sake he's CAPTAIN AMERICA. The action was pretty nice but that was my biggest disappointment. The movie just rushes through most of the action, treating it almost like a montage, except for a couple of moments. I personally think they should have made this movie like Tim Burton's Batman, where you find out Cap's past in flashbacks. That way they could cut, like, 25 minutes from this movie and replace it with more dynamic action. Maybe something like Cap running 469 yards to the Red Skull while simultaneously demobilizing 5 tanks, knocking down 800 solders with his shield, maybe even go downhill and surf on the shield, all while being fired at by 39 HYDRA airplanes. THAT SOUNDS COOL Expand

While 'Captain America: The First Avenger' suffers from some retro style chliches, it's still a thrill ride of an entertaining superhero action movie, and once again, another worthy addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The movie stars Chris Evans (from 'Fantastic Four' fame) as Steve Rogers, this skinny little man from Brooklyn who believes that he is more than people tell him that he is. He wants to join and fight in the war, but is not physically suitable to do so. That is, until he meets Doctor Abraham Erskine (Stanley Tucci) who is testing out his latest experiment with a young Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper) who plans on making Steve into a sort of super soldier.

We also meet the evil Johann Schmidt aka "The Red Skull" (Hugo Weaving), who runs a secret Nazi-like base named Hydra. He steals the tesseract, and plans on using its power, and also plans on bombing different cities across.

Hayley Atwell (looking gorgeous, as to be expected) plays Agent Peggy Carter who grows an attachment to Steve, and can see that after the process of giving him superior human, physical abilities, she understands that Steve has a purpose to serve in the war.

The movie looks great, and is written very well, we can understand the characters' motivations and the plot easily. The movie moves as a very quick pace as well, never slowing down and always showing one thing after another. The only problems that occur is that the villain is pretty cartoon-ish, there is no sense of threat that comes from him, and a lot of "Captain America's" best moments are mainly done through montage, so there is just nothing but highlights of what he did during the war.

Other than that, this is a rock-solid, full-blooded, and very entertaining Marvel movie. Evans, who previously played the cocky and comedic Human Torch in 'Fantastic Four' (2005), proves to be very fleshed out as the self-righteous Captain America. This is a movie made for Marvel fans...

Is it perfect? No. Entertaining? Yes, I think so. It is a very well made and efficiently directed film, with wonderful costumes, effects and settings and the cinematography and editing also impress. The music is rousing, and I just love Star Spangled Man, one of Alan Menken's best songs in my opinion. The script is witty and smart. Cheesy also? Perhaps but in an endearing sort of way. The story has a strong start, but loses its way to sluggish pacing and clichés in the final act. The characters are clichéd too in a sense but like the actors are engaging. Chris Evans is perfect in the title role, and he is joined by sassy Hayley Atwell and a wonderfully gruff Tommy Lee Jones. Hugo Weaving wasn't quite there for me, he is a great actor and he is charismatic and menacing, but his accent is inconsistent and the character could have been delved into more. Overall though, a lot of fun. 8/10 Bethany Cox Expand

But that doesn't make the movie any less enjoyable, but instead makes it fun and memorable, more so than your normal every-day action flick.

Although not as good as Guardians of the Galaxy, The First Avenger proves to be one of the better Marvel movies.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was also worried about how the Captain America movie would turn out since his previous film was very lack luster. Fortunatey this film exceeded my expectations. This is set in the time of World War Two when America is trying to fight a sub operation of Nazis called Hydras and only Captain America can stop them. The origin in the comics lacked any kind of emotional impact but that has been fixed with the film rendition with Captain America played by Chris Evans. He adds a sense of humanity to the good Captain which was lacking in the comics and he is the perfect representation of the American Ideals. The beginning when Steve Rogers was a weakling gave way to some impressive computer effects. As is typical of a Marvel production, the strongest point is the interactions with the characters especially his relationship with Agent Carter and Bucky Barnes. Hugo Weaving plays a great rendition of the Red Skull as once again he represents the hero's polar opposite. It is a battle against Allies freedom vs Axis tyranny. Those who are history buffs might be disappointed since it barely talks about the politics of the war but it is really a summer block buster which was meant to be a fun time. This is not "Saving Private Ryan" here. The film has some impressive action scenes and it even plays around with the idea of using Captain America as a tool of propaganda who evolves into the war hero he was meant to be.The best scene in the film though was the ending after Captain America was wakes up after being frozen in ice. The way the sequence was shot with long takes, the 360 spin, and some medium close ups conveys a sense of loss when he realizes that he is no longer in his time. This film is definitely worth checking out. Expand

Chris Evans puts on a great performance in the boots of the first avenger, really fitting that hero type personality. It’s also refreshing to see a weak character at the beginning like this evolve into a man that he looks like he was really destined to be, and that kind of technique, where the hero starts off weak, works well in origin style films. Hugo Weaving put on a good villainous performance but I just wish his character had a little more development and more purpose in his actions as the Hydra leader. The WW2 setting is shown brilliantly in this film, and even though it can be slightly clichéd at times, it’s a good type of cliché, comic book film cliché. This film overall works great in the origin story department, but the thing with these films is that they are forced to introduce the character and that can sometimes limit where the story branches. So all in all, this film is made purposely for the introduction of the first avenger, to set up many greater stories to come. I’m going to give Captain America, The First Avenger an 86% Expand

PLOT

Steve Rogers, a scrawny young man, wants to enlist in the US Army and go overseas to fight in WWII. But his size and health means his attempts at enlistment always end the same way -- a 4F rating. Until a scientist sees him and recruits him to try out for a special training program to create a super soldier.

WHAT I LIKED

The Marvel universe sticks pretty close to classic script with him being given a serum that jacks his body into super muscle mode. He's already brave and smart, so it would seem like a no-brainer to send him overseas? But the guy in charge of his training doesn't want him, he's just one man, so Rogers ends up doing public relations back home. And he is quite shocked that the men overseas don't react as positively when they see him as the crowds back home. I really enjoyed the way they handle the first battle scene for him, basically him figuring things out as he goes, a far cry from his battle-hardened approaches later.

I even liked his interactions with Agent Carter. I had thought it would be more subtle than it was, and I hoped we'd see a bit more of her operating on her own (after all, they gave her character a whole series on TV!), but she was second fiddle to the hero.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE

The challenge with a lot of American movies of the war is that it is as if they are the only actors in the war, no allies, just them, and that level of nationalistic narrowmindedness is a bit grating. That may be a small gripe when the show is called CAPTAIN AMERICA, not CAPTAIN OF WORKING WITH ALLIES, but still, it's annoying. I also was disappointed there wasn't a lot more on Red Skull. His history, his abilities, other pursuits, all of it was left basically unreferenced. Sure, some of it shows up elsewhere in the Marvel universe, but a bit more crosswalk would have been nice. I felt he really wasn't that well-fleshed out as the uber villain he could have been.

THE BOTTOM LINE / TWEET

As an origin story, it lacks pizazz

Thankfully, a new government program capable of creating "super soldiers" gives him the opportunity to do so.

Unfortunately, even after Steve gets a physical upgrade, he's treated more like a propaganda-spouting mascot for the war effort than he is like a soldier making a genuine difference. Eventually, it gets to the point where he feels the need to take things into his own hands, as increasingly strange and worrisome events begin to take place.

Simply put, this movie is a delight. It suffers from some third act pacing issues, similar to Marvel Studios' other efforts, but it's full of wonderful performances, and is bursting at the seams with heart. The pure sense of hope and optimism that the film exudes makes up for many of its shortcomings. By the end, you will have felt so many different emotions, and will feel the need to put more good into the world.

Captain America: The First Avenger is an awesome take on Steve Roger's (Chris Evans) beginnings. The movie stayed interesting but there were some notable flaws while watching, like the CGI done to put Steve's (Chris Evans) head on a much smaller person and the moment where Bucky (Sebastian Stan) fell out of the cargo train. Still, it's a good entry in the MCU and a good standalone movie.

What could have been a by-the-numbers origin story (and in some respects, it is) is instead a highly entertaining war adventure film with a big heart.
It's probably the MCU's most underrated movie.

The cinematography and production design are a lot better than I remembered. The shot of the Hydra aircraft sinking in the ice is gorgeous, and I really don't know how I never noticed it before.

From the moving scenes between Steve and Dr. Erskein, to its loving lampooning of the character's origin as a pulpy piece of propaganda (that song rules by the way), the movie's just a blast to watch and it makes me smile every time.

It's very wholesome for a film that has the goriest death in the whole franchise.

The action, dialogue and story are all solid and the visuals in the film are a breath of fresh air from previous ones in the MCU. Chris Evans does a great job portraying the morally righteous yet somewhat awkward supersoldier, and the supporting cast members give solid performances as well. The movie avoids the trap of squandering some of its A-list actors, such as Hugo Weaving and Tommy Lee Jones, and sets some others on the path to the A-list, namely Chris Evans and Sebastian Stan. First Avenger does a nice job of setting up future MCU films without getting too focused on that and spends a good amount of time allowing us to get to know who Steve Rogers is. Nick Fury’s cameo at the end to set up Cap’s appearance in the Avengers movies is well placed and nicely begins Rogers’ arc as an Avenger. My only real complaint is why Nick Fury had two cameos in this movie: one at the end and one as the mid/post-credits scene. Having him appear at the end just once is more than enough to set him up for the Avengers movies and the credits scene creates redundancy with the Avengers. Overall, while it doesn’t quite hit the bar set by Iron Man, First Avenger is a solid origin story and entry in the MCU. Expand

But upon rewatching it the movie has aged pretty good as it is a movie that has been made better and more relevant with the release of movies such as The Winter Soldier, Civil War, Infinity War, and Endgame. The first 75 minutes of the movie are fantastic as Chris Evans did a great job as Captain America but it does a great job really developing Steve Rogers as a character. And the ending where he was like "I had a date" was fantastic and is one of the best endings in the MCU. It was sad and very emotional. The fight scenes in this movie are not great but are still pretty good and fun to watch. Now red Skull was kind of a meh villain Hugo Weaving did do a great job but the Red Skull was just ok. I liked the movie. In the first phase of the MCU, when they were mostly weak or did not use their potential properly, this one was satisfactory for me. Among the other works of 2011, it appeared more successful.
The movie is based on Origin. It means that Origin shows Captain America well and gives a reason why a humble man should wear tight clothes and go to the battlefield.
I can boldly say that it goes even beyond the expectations and the comic version of Captain America. That is, we are witnessing a more sympathetic Steve Rogers than the comic.
Although the movie has some weaknesses. I know that the movie is rated PG13, but for some age groups it might seem boring. What James Gunn managed to do is to make the whole family watch the movie. I also like the special effects. It did not come.
Other than that, secondary characters such as Peggy Carter or Arnim Zola and... they were all great. The chemistry of the two main characters was amazing. The villain was wonderful. Attractive games and... did I forget something?

This latest film of the Star-Spangled Avenger is one that embodies a perceptible outpouring of nationalistic spirit and ardor, that draws from you, a rallying cry worthy of a few U-S-A-'s. The result, is a fanboy's dream, a new, improved look, and a comic-franchise-to-be, that just might become Marvel's next biggest thing. Think about it...What other comic film, after viewing, could you say made you feel proud to be an American? Zilch. Hey, and who knows, maybe with this country's ever-falling history test scores, a movie--this movie--of all things might be the cure; with Cap on your side, WWII might again be discussed and remembered. But, let's move on. So, you may be wondering: "Besides the 'feel-good' affect of a potential franchise, and the revival of academic decadence, how was the actual movie?" And I would tell you..."Captain America: The First Avenger" is the first of the historic 2011 summer blockbusters that aims to deliver on a textual basis, in lieu, of on a visual level; granted the visuals are far from peripheral. Farther, the 40's setting is a real delight to rivet in, as well. As for the acting...Chris Evans does a serviceable job as Captain Rogers, although, the 90 pound version is even more refined, and spectacular than the advanced CGI seen on Benjamin Button (2008). Hayley Atwell (Peggy Carter) also does a fine job, albeit, her presence is most known in the form of tightly-fit dress, showcasing her impeccable figure---she fits very well into the 40's dame picturesque. To my own surprise, is the real treasure in 'The First Avenger:' Tommy Lee Jones as Colonel Chester Phillips. Jones' stern, dead-set demeanor was to be expected, but his character brandishes more wit and charisma than other roles. More than anything, and what propels this film past all of the other of its genre---slightly more than X-First Stand---is its element of aptness of tradition; the feeling is conditioned within us. Captain America 'Wants YOU' to come to the theater! Expand

The origin story for a character that subsequently went on to become one of the most popular in modern cinema, The First Avenger hits all the usual Marvel beats and makes the most of Chris Evan’s effortless charm. The final ten minutes arguably focuses too much on setting up subsequent movies, but that is a minor criticism of what is otherwise a pretty good summer blockbuster.

It's got all the entertainment you've come to expect from Marvel summer blockbusters derived from slick storytelling, creative action and a sprinkling of humour. What lifts Cap up above the rank-and-file is it's satire of wartime propaganda and patriotism. Easily one of the strongest sequences is when the Cap receives his first mission, not action scene to test his newly acquired powers as one might expect, but a song-and-dance tour to keep American hearts and minds (and wallets) in support of the war. The film does have drawbacks - not least of which is a common one amongst superhero origin stories, that is to say a pretty rubbish villian. Poor old Hugo Weaving does his best as really nasty Nazi Red Skull, but does little but scheme and gurn behind a big red face. That's what the villain in an origin story has to do, unfortunately, merely provide enough of a challenge to create spectacle, but not be too difficult for the hero to best - it's only the first chapter in their story afterall. The Cap's other chief problem is really Marvel's - rather than dedicating a whole film to introducing one of their biggest stars, they chose to share the runtime between Captain America and the origins of the Avengers, hence the title: The First Avenger. So it's part origin and part prequel to next year's super-fantastic-wonder-team extravaganza. Dispite these drawbacks, the film is still very, very fun. Some nice action, effects and humour keeps the film moving, and Evans makes a likeable protagonist. It really is quite an achievement to make such a goody two-shoes so likeable, the Cap really has always been quite a bland character (not a personality defect in sight!) maybe it's just Evans' effortless boyish charm. Stanley Tucci, Hayley Attwell and Tommy Lee Jones in usual authoritarian grouch mode, in addition to Alan Silvestri's big, brash and brassy score also add to the quality of the film. So Captain America is a perfectly decent period superhero flick, and you're sure to have a good time watching it. It's not exceptional, but that's mostly because origin stories rarely are, and Marvel just seems to want to pack everything they do at the moment with knowing fan-boy nods to The Avengers. Expand

Against that sample, Captain America: The First Avenger does alright. The film appropriately takes place in altered World War II era in the US (presented largely Art-Deco style, think Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow toned down a few notches). I found the first 30 minutes of the film was the best it had to offer. It made me feel like this may be something special for the genre, but it quickly transformed from the a drama to a non-stop action flick that lacked much substance (perhaps bad editing). Overall I thought it was well cast (although this is one of Tommy Lee Jones worst performances), it's just sad it turned into another comic action-flick which seemed to kind of chug along to get to it's final destination to setup the 2012 superhero composite film, The Avengers. In fact, the audience gets treated to an Avengers teaser at the end which seems to be positioned as more of a continuation of the story started in this film. Once that film makes it release, Captain America: The First Avenger may be viewed as sort of a part-one of something bigger. Having said all of this, I enjoyed Thor (released earlier this year) a great a deal more. Captain America would probably be my least favorite of the Marvel films released so far, save for the unnecessary sequel, Iron Man 2.... If you've enjoyed the other Marvel films, you're in for something different with this one and you probably will enjoy it. Expand

The script is very engaging and the acting is perfectly suitable for this type of film. The 1942 setting is refreshing, as well as the unapologetically old-fashioned story. It has a vintage superhero aura that coaxes you in and allows you to overlook it's numerous flaws. If you aren't willing to simplify your taste in cinema for 2 hours then this movie won't impress you at all, but in the end you'd be happy you did it, and the exploitative ending will leave you feeling bittersweetly rewarded. He is officially an actor who exudes acting perfection when on screen. Some fans who are familiar with Chris Evans' turn as the Human Torch in the Fantastic Four movies may also want to take a second look at his acting prowess and stage charisma as Captain America. Evans is no longer the exasperating wisecracking sidekick. Evans captures Captain America's palpable candor, untouchable honesty, and magnanimity. Captain America is a Baby Boomer's boy scout, and Evans plays it to a tee. The film's story could use some development, but I'm suspecting that the film makers learned that comic book movie fans generally don't go in for long-winded dialogue and expansive character study (ala The Return of Superman). The audience is treated to a brief development of Steve Rogers' character, then it's off to the races as Captain America battles the dark forces of Nazism. Overall, "Captain America" is a great movie for a mixed crowd. For those not very familiar with the character, the brief development and fast-paced action makes for an enjoyable ride. For those die hard Cap fans, the director is careful to pay homage to the Golden Age of Captain America, while setting the stage for the larger frame of the "Avengers" movie. Be sure to keep your seat until after the credits roll. An extended "Avengers" trailer awaits those who are patient. My vote: 7 out of 10 for a solid comic book flick. Expand

Enjoyably pulpy and confidently hokey, Captain America is more or less the same package you got with Iron Man 2 and Thor, which is to say, "Let's just keeping hyping that goddamn Avengers movie, until everyone is guaranteed to hate it."

The action sequences are explosive, intense and exciting and there is a respectable amount of character development and witty lines along the way. Expand

I was dissapointed with pretty much all the ones released this year. None were orrible by any means but they just didn't really leave me satisfied. Captain America was definitely the best superhero flick this year. It wasn't the greatest film I've seen but it was thouroughly entertaining and the acting was on point. Chris Evans played a great Captain America. The begining dragged on for a little bit but once the movie picks up it stays entertaining for the rest of the film. It was definitely a solid flick and although it's pg-13 I'd say it was pretty kid friendly for the most part. Red Skull is a little scary but he is the villain after all. Expand

Anyway this was a fantastic movie. Chris Evans does a fantastic job as Steve Rogers AKA Captain America, being a short wimp who cant fight his own fights, but then becoming the superpowerful mercenary named Captain America. Hugo Weaving is also excellent as the villain Red Skull, the rule is put Hugo Weaving in a villain role and it will be awesome, For Instance Megatron in the new Transformers movies, Agent Smith in the Matrix films, Metal Beak in Legend of the Gaurdians, or even the good guy V in V for Vendetta. He pulls off the accent for the character well and does a fantastic job in his dialogue and his backhanded nature. Now I will give a warning that the film is not very entertaining for about the first 30 minutes, but when Captain America gets his suit on and his shield it becomes one Badass film. The action is what steals the show for me, it is fantastic and exhilerating to watch. The ending is ppretty much the same as every other marvel movie lately but I was surprsied to see a Trailer for *Spoiler Alert* The Avengers at the end of the film. So If you are looking for an entertaining action film for this summer don't pass this one up. Expand

Hugo Weaving was a great villian and Tommy Lee Jones was a solid supporting actor too. I thought it ended good too and it worked perfectly to set up how the Captain came into the new time period without really messing anything up or giving a stupid explaination for it either. However there are some problems that I had with it.

1. Chris Evans is a rather poor lead. He does get better somewhat later on in the film but he just isnt a satisfying lead in this film at all.

2. I hated how the action scenes not only looked painfully obviously fake but they were slowed down in an attempt to make it look cool when really it looked trash. Id have rathed let the action scenes play out in real time then try to patheticly re-create an action scene from 300.

3. The plot didnt really satisfy you. It was good enough to keep you watching without really thinking of it or asking questions but once it was over, You realize how shallow it actually is and how good of a job they did at covering it up.

Overall it was a good comic book movie but it had its flaws.

HowOut of all the major Marvel superheroes, Steve Rogers is definitely the least interesting of the bunch. He's a lot like Superman where he's basically the embodiment of good... and well... that's about it. The movie runs into this problem. How do you make a good movie when your hero is simply a patriotic do-gooder? Well thanks to Chris Evans' performance and a script that has fun with the material, Captain America ends up being a superhero movie full of fun and excitement, even if it doesn't quite overcome all of its obstacles. The movie's strongest element is its pacing. The screenwriters smartly focus the movie's running time on how Steve Rogers becomes Captain America which is the most interesting part of the story. When it comes to the development of the romance between Rogers and Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) and Captain America's mission to take down the Red Skull, the movie breezes on through like a WWII highlight reel. There is a more drawn out action scene where Captain America has to rescue Allied prisoners, but the filmmakers seem to realize that once you see Captain America take down one group of Hydra soldiers, you don't really need to see it again. The movie does get a little too cheesy for its own good, but unlike "Green Lantern," the cheesiness only hits for brief stints, and I mean come on, it's Captain America. That's practically a recipe for cheese right there. The only real problem "Captain America" faces is its less than fascinating hero. He's so purely good that every choice he makes turns out to be a predictable one. Like I said before, the filmmakers handle him well, but there's only so much you can do with the character. Expand
