Great performance by Tom Hardy and an interesting take on the character of Al Capone.

Capone remind me of Bennett Miller's ''Capote''. Even the names look alike.
I make the comparison because both films are sustained by the performances of their lead actors and they're pretty much all that matters.
Is their names and their performances what leads the films.

However Capote was resonant as a whole, even alongside Philip Seymour Hoffman's titanic performance.
Capone on the other hand, despite not overshadowing Tom Hardy's committed work, it's just a boring and empty film.
Hardy's performance belongs to a better film.

Josh Trank doesn't sink any deeper than he did with Fantastic Four, but it definitely puts into perspective that his ego makes him believe he's a better director than he really is.

Instead of a movie about the hey-day of one of the most infamous gangsters in American history this is a turgid examination of Scarface's post-prison life, a prisoner now of dementia and violent fantasies. There was obviously no theatrical market for this turkey so it went right to video.. Expand

I had some doubts about how this will turn out because Josh Trank is directing also writing. I'm saying this just cause Fantastic Four was so bad but i liked his other movie, Chronicle. Then when i heard Tom Hardy is playing Al Capone i had not doubt this will not be another tour of force for the most gifted and talented actor nowadays. I loved every single second, i love that there are scenes that makes you think if this is real or not and most important is Hardy's perfomance. At his best, he really go all the way and back again in a crazy ass movie that is absolutely brilliant! Once again i am greateful to experience another Tom Hardy fabulous performace that proove again that we live in his own cinematic universe! Bow down!

Thanks Tom!

I think cutting an extra 15 minutes off of this would have made it a lot more tolerable to watch. Ultimately what tanks this movie is the fact that the budget is small, most of which I would assume was spent on the cast (especially hard) salaries. So when you blow all your budget on the one thing, You are extremely limited to what you can actually do onscreen. I think a slightly bigger budget would have made for a better film. Expand

Capone does some things right, its nicely directed and acted but suffers from a muddled script and Tom Hardy's performance eats up most of the screen. Capone takes a good concept of taking a horrorific monster of a criminal in Al "Fonzo" Capone and looking at him at his absolute worst. He's loosing his grip on reality, his life and his bowls. The problem is it takes a good concept and instead of swinging for the fences, he swings for the moon. Tom Hardy is great here and actually all of the cast is good but all Hardy does in the film is mumble incoherently, stare intensely, crap his pants, hallucinate and walk around like he's carrying heavy bags.

The side characters are essentially there to deal with Capone loosing his mind and theres no real motivation to it. There is a plot point involving money that Capone hid away that never actually goes anywhere but other than that its a essentially a poor man's "Irishman." Its a bit of a disappointing film but i don't recommend not watching it and forming your own opinion of it.

And now here is the interesting thing about the movie, did you like this movie? And the answer for the mayority is no, but did you know that the movie is suposed to dislike you, is not another ganster movie, its a totally new gender. This movie is made specifically to dislike people, and Josh Trank should win an Oscar for Best Director beacuse of all he did in this movie, Capone is kind of an autocritic to himself and is full of simbolysm and Josh Trank should be awarded beacuse of what he did, he take a grate risk with this movie, when some movies are so bad that they end up being good this movie is the oposite, is so good that ends up being bad. If you get bored, disliked, deceptioned or disgusted it means that the movie worked, it made you feel like Josh Trank wanted you to felt with this movie, and let me tell you that is a genious idea. This movie needs to be on 2021 Oscars season, maybe The Academy would understand this movie. Also the soundtrack is awesome, so calm and beautiful. This movie is good and nobody cant say the oposite. Josh Trank is more interested in showing himself as an epigon of Lynch than as the director of a biopic about Al Capone, and the film suffers it as much as Tom Hardy's acting.

Deadly dull, aimless and frustrating script, which hamstrung both Hardy and Trank, though I suspect both had met their match in material and character. The verdict is beginning to appear that Trank is no Tarantino (note: I have reservations that Tarantino is no Tarantino) as the shapelessness and leaden pacing of this film demonstrates. The repetitive focus on Hardy's immobile and expressionless face reminded me of the lazy writing/direction that has overtaken The Handmaid's Tale with its once thrilling but now tiresome reliance on Offred's skyward stare (at least it evokes her vengefulness). I'd like to see Hardy pull back from the Gonzo and hold it in reserve for a project with demonstrable substance. I can't imagine he found any in the script he saw when he signed on.

There was an interesting idea here that went wildly awry.

It's not what I was expecting. I hadn't heard much about it admittedly, but I was anticipating a full blown film about Al Capone - especially with the casting of Tom Hardy. That's not a bad thing in isolation, at all, but coupled with iffy storytelling it ends up being a waste.

Hardy (Al) is undoubtedly the best thing about this, yet I still think he had way more in him for this sort of role - if the filmmakers had allowed him to use it, of course. There aren't any standouts behind Hardy, though Linda Cardellini (Mae) and Kyle MacLachlan (Karlock) are OK.

There's nothing I massively dislike about this, I just wanted so much more from it. It is, I will say, at least a film that makes you think - I just don't, personally, think it came out as perhaps intended.
