The cinematography and musical score are exceptional. The opening credits sets a tone that feels like this could be a redeeming re-imagination of the classic… Unfortunately, that is where the spectacle ends.

The topics this film centre around, and have been doubled-down upon, are handled without any tact whatsoever. It’s tunnel-vision small mindedness race baiting, seemingly without a motive other than resentment and division.

It’s a film that focuses on the injustices of racism, but ironically is racist itself, which I cannot condone.

This film was overly political for and against a specific audience in the USA. If you do not live in this country, this might either be irrelevant or outright boring.

There are better films to spend the 90 minutes I wasted watching this.

This movie captures none of the gothic charm of the original. It goes out of its way to fulfill the woke agenda, and in the process does nothing to create a compelling story, all the while alienating half the audience. The horror aspect of it, which is almost non-existent, is so utterly cheesy it's disrespectful to paying customers. Those who are here because they liked the original; it captures none of the charm nor suspense of the original. The only thing I can say is, I learned my lesson on paying to see something with DaCosta's or Peele's name attached to it. Never again. Expand

(WhichAmazed by how awful this new version is, especially with the pedigree of talent involved. Multiple, conflicting backstories confuse Candyman as a character, who is stripped of his seductive qualities, and is simply a specter of menace. (Which is *fine*, but nowhere near as interesting as the original character.) There's no reason to root for either of the two protagonists -- one an ill-defined art dealer, the other an ill-defined artist. Neither has any clear sense of desire or motivation. With no one to root for, the narrative is a vacuum in which lots of stuff happens, and a lot of social justice tropes are trotted out for the sake of establishing Contemporary Relevance (TM), but nothing about the plot lands or feels meaningful. As a villain, Candyman poses the same threat as innumerable other movie villains, which is a massive shame given how compelling and empathetic the character once was. There is some stellar shadow-puppetry, and the cinematography is passably slick, but the aesthetics can't make up for the boring, nonsensical plot, which includes a "twist" so dumb that I gave up twenty minutes before the movie ended. If you are going to watch a scary movie with a dumb story the entertainment comes from the scares. This movie is not scary, the jump scares boil down to the movie getting quiet for a second and then a loud unnatural sound effect. For an example, in the beginning they transition a scene with a loud unnatural snapping noise because the main character steps on a stick in the next scene. In scenes where there could be scares and the candyman is killing people they decide not to show it. This movie felt more like an excuse to tell people “gentrification is bad, white people are racist, cops are bad.” I would give it a zero but I did like some of the cinematography in a couple scenes. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Very disappointed in this movie. The writing and pacing was all over the place leaving the viewer say “wait…whose that?” “When/how did that happen?” “Why doesnt the character do this?” “Why didnt he/she die?”. Ill give examples of some of these issues so spoiler alert: in one scene the characters are in an art gallery and the camera focuses in on a random stranger and then pans away and it leaves you saying “wait who was that?”(character dies in a later scene and thats it) in that same gallery scene the main character is showing his art piece then in the very next camera cut he is drunk and acting like a douche to some characters we don’t recognize…When did he get drunk? Who is that guy he hates? Now the movie is very clear saying that if u say “Candyman” 5 times u SHOULD die. In one scene 5 schoolgirls say Candyman 5 times in a restroom and end up being killed, but 1 girl(she is a 6th girl that was in a stall) doesnt take part in the ritual and only witnesses the deaths. Makes sense cuz she didnt say it right? Well in the final scene one of the main characters is in police custody and to escape(revenge?) she says Candyman 5 times but the Candyman only kills the cops? Wait what??? After analyzing all the killings the Candyman did, I noticed the people killed where white people(rightfully so since they did the ritual right?)but even if they didn’t do the ritual they died and if a black person does the ritual they live and the white people still die… The movie did have some cool jump scares(the elevator one was cool) and some of the killings were gruesome, but thats is about it(good acting tho!)The movie fails in everything else(writing, character development, consistency, satisfying ending.) This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. No.

No. No.

No!

This movie is terrible. The entire time I was watching the clock going, 'when is the horror supposed to start?'- in the LAST 5 MINUTES the film tries its best to show us its take on horror and it's pathetic. The bee face CGI is bad, and the nonsense Candyman spouts is laughable. The kills are mostly done off-screen so, why even bother filming them? If the director is so against showing gore, just cover it up with a fluffy teddy bear or pixilation - just don't insult the audience with these 'artistic' shots.

The film spends sooooooo much time trying to develop other characters but for what reason? There is no character development, only a bunch of woke morons spouting junk. The main character himself is just practically a caveman when it comes to acting. The acting overall is terrible and the plot is... I have no idea why anyone did what they did quite frankly. But the biggest insult is how it treats the first film as a sort of stepping stone for this one. If you're going to turn the Candyman into fictional mythos for a sort-of sequel then sure, but don't retroactively ruin the first film with your woke rubbish. The first Candyman was scary, well acted and interesting. Tony Todd was an insanely cool Candyman in 1992, but 2021 Candyman is just a chad with a hook. If you've read the subtle clues in my review, then you can tell that this film is GARBAGE. Avoid don't bother, especially if you loved the first film.

It's bad, I don't recall when was the last time I was so disappointed in the cinema. I'm super surprised that there is only 1 (one!) negative critic review.

Trailer really set the expectations with the visuals and cool soundtrack. And there are some nice shots and ideas but in general there is no suspense whatsoever and the social commentary is super naive and taking the whole thing to the extreme.
It appears that Candyman(or -men actually) is only killing white people (which are all villains in this movie) and he's actually used as a weapon in some crazy revenge strategy.

There are some cool, creative ideas, like few death scenes, but they are all very poorly executed with wrong pacing and soundtrack.

It's pretty clear by now that Jordan Peele have a gigantic chip on his shoulder when it comes to white people (which is kinda funny since he's half white) and he's never subtle with his feelings in his movies. In Candyman it's more blatantIt's pretty clear by now that Jordan Peele have a gigantic chip on his shoulder when it comes to white people (which is kinda funny since he's half white) and he's never subtle with his feelings in his movies. In Candyman it's more blatant than ever; all white people (and white cops) are cruel, stupid, mean and evil, so kill all the white people!
I don't know if Peele gets off on being "provocative" in his blatant unwitty ways and goes "Haha! Look at all these b*tthurt angry racists react!" - but either way, it's not clever and it's probably more counterproductive than helpful. His "anti racism" is equivalent to pushing a dogs face in filth, until the dog, one day, bites back. It's fueling dislike, hate and anger in both ways, instead of handling problems and bringing people together.

But besides this, Candyman is a strange "horror" movie. The fact that the director chose to play down and make most of the killings happen off screen, makes it play out more like a quite boring flatlining tv drama, instead of an intense horror movie and the story isn't intriguing or good enough to stand on it's own legs, without the "flavour" of gore and suspense.
The acting and cinematography was pretty decent tho and kudos for not using tons of jump scares ...but not kudos for removing scares totally.

Sadly the movie is portraying modern political views rather than a movie based on the original concept.

Go to the Wikipedia page for the 1992 movie and see how it was last edited this July and has been edited to be in line with the remake and todays political agendas.

On point of the original movie, the movie had nothing to do with race in it, at the 15 minute mark the entrance into investigating deeper with Helen and Bernie (The chick with the blue sweater who tricks Helen into thinking there is a person in the vacant apartment behind their medicine cabinet).

The following; "Gangs hold this place hostage" - Gangs in the Carbrini-Green area. As Bernie points out they both look like cops. Has no racial tie and the only agenda is to not get attacked by said gangs.

From 16:57 into the movie play time, the scene with both in the car on their way is where The mention of gangs and them looking like police happens, further on from this it is also mentioned that Helen is brave and see's no danger in being who she is even when given words of wisdom, she gets beaten in a toilet by thugs and a wannabe Candyman.

The remake is a terrible film, a master peice and great study on the lowering of human intelligence and how anyone with a narrative regardless of truth or not can hold power over people, sad and pathetic. Racist movie with ulterior motives, get help.

You see the first one managed to create an atmosphere you just can't find in a horror movie and definitely can't find in this one. It was scary and by the end, you really did buy into the narrative. That maybe, just maybe saying Candyman 5 times, he might just appear.

But what it really did well was to tell the same story that this one tries (and fails) to tell. It successfuly handled the deeper themes. And it did it without forcing them down your throat. It did a great job conveying the message and still being a really great horror movie. This sequel isn't a particularly good horror movie. Yes, it's very well scored and shot. But that's about all it has going for it. There's nothing you haven't already seen 1000 times in any other horror/slasher. You see, the reason is that it's not a horror movie. It's a political statement masquerading as a horror movie.
More importantly. In an effort to push its narrative, it neglects the story and the characters. I see people commenting that the negative reviews are only because we don't get the "themes". Well we get it now and we got it with the original. The difference is that the original handled it tactfully and wove it into the story and the horror. It still successfully conveyed its message. More so than this one. Watching this sequel is like constantly being hit with a brick. WHITE BAD. WHITE BAD. WHITE BAD.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Having come back home from the cinema, all I can say is I'm disappointed... This film was slow, didn't really have much to say about itself apart from the good old "white person is bad" (cheers Jordan Peale, you seem to love this ehh) - This seemed to have no direction, I can see how it's been linked with the first films through the backstory that is shown, I liked that part but wow, was this film boring! I was sat waiting for the tension to build up but it never got there. I was excited to see Tony Todd reappear again as I knew he would be in it but he just makes an appearance in the last 20 seconds of the film (maybe CGI) as if to show that a sequel would be coming. The ending is so unsatisfying, no conclusion to tie up this one film but just a hint that there will be another film to conclude. I've never been this disappointed with a cinema trip in a long time. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have never been so angry. Candyman is my favorite horror movie. This film is not Candyman. It is political propaganda to show that police officers are evil. The climax of the film tried to make the murder of officers justified, which is wrong whether they are guilty or not. It was a gross misrepresentation of officers, trying to make it seem like they are all bad. The message was showing that the current narrative is that officers are innocent, when in reality officers always get the short end of the stick. The media’s message is ALWAYS that the officer is in the wrong, whether they are or not. Candyman’s final words were to tell everyone, so I did. DO NOT give your money to this movie! The ending explicitly stated that Candyman only murders guilty white folk (girls bullying a black girl, racist cops) except 20 minutes before the end they shoe horned in a 30 second clip of Candyman murdering two little black girls so the entire movie isn't about killing whitey. Absolute garbage. I watched 10 minutes of this before recognising what was going on and sadly it didn't let up. I watched 10 minutes of this before recognising what was going on and sadly it didn't let up. As a fan of the original movie, it's a shame to see this franchise (as well as so many other films) just becoming woke nonsense that doesn't reflect reality at all. How about focusing on writing a good story rather than preaching poorly researched racial assumptions? You might just end up with a good movie that way... Expand

The biggest horror of this sequel/ remake of Candyman isn't the hollow racial politics but the fact that it just isn't very scary - 3 stars

I was genuinely excited to see a slasher/horror movie with an all African American cast, director, and writer. I didn't know it was just going to be about how much white people suck. I didn't know it was just going to be about how much white people suck. Not that racial relations aren't important to discuss, but... I dunno, this seemed like it was far more interested in that than making a good horror film. To be clear, I am all for diversity and inclusion. But I'm not sure this is the way to do it.

Looked good, acting was good all around.

Aside from the woke bull$hit, it's not scary, has a stupid story, and an overall boring film. The original was such a scary masterpiece and this abomination is a big slap in the face.

The story was a convoluted mess, it should have concentrated on being its own thing rather than trying to tie into the original because this movie fails at both being a remake or a sequel, it's clear it doesn't know what it was meant to be either and Anthony and Ann-Marie should have been left out entirely. On the positive side, the cinematography was very good and well shot, the acting was good and the script was decent for the most part.
In summary, this movie failed in my opinion, I just wish movies would return to telling a good story rather than pandering and forcing political narratives, I think many people are getting sick of it now, it's hurting franchises and future movies.

It's like Peele, Rosenfeld, and DaCosta were so angry and trying so hard to address sociopolitical issues that they forgot to write a story. It's like they had a story at first(not a very interesting story, but a story nonetheless) and then completely threw a bunch of random woke bs in there to appease minority groups. The original addressed sociopolitical issues far better because it wasn't too heavy-handed. Ruined a great original film by interjecting woke nonsense in because you're angry with the current state of America. Get out of Hollywood, DaCosta and Rosenfeld. At least Peele has some good films under his belt. Although him co-signing this, I don't know how much longer I can tolerate him. Expand
