It is on the order of "Ordinary People" on the depressing scale. It is masterfully paced, shot, and told along with socking you in the gut. And even in spite of the movie's dour undertone, it is an exceptional love story that resembles "Titanic" without the overwrought pretentiousness and special effects. Give Gyllenhal the Oscar now for Supporting Actor, and don't forget at least nominating Williams and Ledger in Supporting Actress and Actor. Expand

Ang Lee is that rare director who trusts the audience and allows subtext to stand on its own without hitting you over the head. Very moving. That said, I did wish it had lingered a few more beats at the saddest points to allow us to feel more along with the characters, but maybe that's why the characters continue to live in your imagination. The score is also beautiful, simple and never intrusive. (Only real complaint: the swiftly-implied sex between the leads was only depicted animalistically, never lovingly/tenderly. An inaccurate, unfortunate stereotype.) See this movie on the big screen! Expand

Looks like this is common. It haunts you. I know it won't let me go until I see it again. It grows more powerful and emotional the more you play it over in your head, the more you find yourself imagining all the things the characters never get to say. That's its remarkable, unusual power. We just grabbed Proulx's original story -- the film was amazingly true to it. Her incredible dialogue is nearly all on screen, and her dazzlingly poetic prose is evoked in Lee's poetic imagery. Wow. The two lead characters haunted me, One of the most moving films I've seen in years. A fine example of what wonderful writing can produce. The more I thought about the film, days after, weeks after seeing it, the more I loved it. The two lead characters haunted me, particularly Ennis, who broke my heart. Ultimately, the story works almost more as his tragedy, what is wrought when a life is lived beneath the weight of self-loathing and denial. I'd be interested to know if the few people so strident in their criticism actually saw the film. While they cast the movie as some agenda piece of far left Hollywood, they make their own agendas all too apparent. It is important to remember that this film took 7 years to get made. Studios and directors didn't want to touch it because of its subject matter, despite the script having the reputation as the best unmade movie floating around. Why must every movie or work of art having to do with gay characters automatically be labled as having an agenda? Why can't it just be what it is - a work of art? Judge it on those mertis, not on outside forces that have nothing to do with the film. The reason this film works as well as it does is because its only agenda and allegience is to these two characters. And these two men come so painfully alive, that their tragedy sears the heart and mind. In the end, for me, it is a classic love story, maybe the best modern love story to be made in some time, because it utilizes all the hallmarks of tragic love with wonderful restraint and sincerity. When I attended an advance screening, I was prepared to be disappointed, partly due to repeated viewings of the trailer that, I admit, left me in tears. While I did find the pacing of the near silent first scenes awkward on first viewing, made worse by poor sound in the theatre, I was quickly swept into the picture and transported. As the closing credits rolled I felt that I had just witnessed something politically important and cinematically poetic. The stunned silence of my fellow viewers led me to suspect that I might be right. Ang Lee has made a movie that refuses to capitulate to trend in any way. No bombast, no gratuity. McMurtry and Ossana beautifully fleshed out the tale just enough to capture the spirit and soul of these people trapped in a hell worthy of Sartre. Ledger is stunning - made more so by his virtual disposable mainstream performances prior to this - as his every utterance seems an effort to express something while giving away nothing. Gyllenhaal builds upon the stride forward witnessed in "Jarhead" and leaves us curious as to what comes next. Michelle Williams' performance puts her embryonic years at the Creek behind her - finely balancing a role that could have easily become unsympathetic. Hathaway slips beautifully out of her fluffy tiara persona into a crown of thorn - her young Texas spitfire turning brittle from the deprivation of a storybook ending daddy's little girl thought she deserved. I'm surprised to see some online reviewers focusing on this film as one that glorifies lies and adultery and I have to wonder if we saw the same movie. What I saw was a cautionary tale of the pain and chaos created when one is unable or refuses to reconcile with what they face in the mirror - a glorification of nothing. This is not a "gay cowboy" movie nor is it a "gay" anything movie. It's a spiritual movie about everyone's need to find their place in the world. Whether you choose to do it with an evangelical theory of God or with any other equally important reference is part of that journey. Expand

Although many who have seen "Brokeback Mountain" have complained on about it on moral grounds, it presents a real vision of what mutual attraction between males meant in the early sixties prior to the beginning of the gay liberation movement in America. Ennis del Mar and Jack Twist are not gay-identified males in the modern sense of the phrase; they are two straight-identified males with a problem to hide. This is a break-through film, not because it shows gay sexual acts or two men kissing, because it treats the emotional damage wrought by a machista society that responds to same-sex love with derision and violence. It is sad to read negative comments by reviewers sitting astride their high moral horses criticizing the film for supposedly "glamorizing gay love between two queer cowboys." Too often those same moral values are discarded when it comes to films that glorify criminal activity or graphically depict the murder and/or multilation of humans. Then, it is called "realism" where the sadism, violence, and straight sex are part and parcel of selling that vision of reality to a public eager to consume it. "Brokeback Mountain" paints a slow, deliberate portrait of the effects of deliberately repressing the strongest of human desires: sex and love. The phrase "instant classic" in not hyperbole in the case of Ang Lee's stunning work of art. Expand

The Brokeback is one of the great films in recent memory. With understated brilliance, Ang Lee carefully follows the crossing paths of two men and their families through a story of love which is both conventional and groundbreaking. The repression of true feelings is not a new theme of a film, but this Anne Proulx story with two male protagonists as lovers is new ground for motion pictures. Not a political film, Brokeback Mountain combines all the best of writing, acting, directing and production and invites the viewer to join a beautiful if not painful journey through the lives of these characters. Special appreciation to Heath Ledger for his creation of an intriguing character from words on a page. We have not seen this level a character work in film for years. Lee's Eastern philosophical touch(scene earlier to great effect in Ice Storm and Crouching Tiger) is not only a reprieve from the expected Hollywood hammering of violence, Special Effects and stock characters but a perfect match for the understated characters of the McMurtry and Ossana screenplay. The reverence and awe with which Ang films the ever-fading "west" and his characters could not be accomplished by any Director of which I am aware. Most film makers today set out to create a great blockbuster which will surely "blow them away" at opening weekend box office. Brokeback Mountain is a simple story of finding, experiencing, and losing love told gently with great compassion. It is Masterpiece ranking with Hitchcock's Vertigo and Rebecca, Allen's Another Woman or Interiors, the Merchant/Ivory adaptations of the EM Forster works, or dare I add the similarities f Brokeback to the early works of Cimino(?)---all tackling the wide open range of passion in the human spirit. But this time, Brokeback Mountain attempts to lasso the human spirit with ranch-handing Shepherds who call themselves Cowboys. Expand

The slow unfolding of the film, i found, offers the viewer to really get lost within the storyline, and I was pleased that the near nonexistant sex scenes did not isolate the viewer to any serious degree. How anyone could have left the cinema untouched is simply beyond me. I saw it again the very next day to crosscheck my viewpoint. aside from very minor unexplained moments in the film, I would concider it near perfect. Expand

I never really bought Ledger's Gary Cooper act, or the fact that he never aged. He didn't look much older than his supposed 19-year-old daughter. Within these limits, still a compelling story. Expand

I have seen it three times. Heath Ledger is fantastic. My absolutely favorite actor in the whole world. Jake Gyllenhaal gives a wonderful performance. Throughout the whole film you practically become Ennis and Jack. But in the end it's unimaginable what Ennis feels. In the last maybe half-hour I was thrown many things deeply touching and saddening I could not help but sob into my jacket. I just had to see it a second time. Then it felt like I could not live if I didn't see it a third time. And now I'd like to see it a fourth maybe. It was such a great adaptation from Annie's Proulx's short-story. The country was stunned when it didn't win Oscars/Academy Award's Best Picture. But BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN is the absolute best movie and my definite favorite movie of all time. Expand

Absolutely amazing! This movie was like a shot to the heart to me. It's a beautiful story about deep and genuine love, denied by society. How is it that someone slapped the easy tag of "gay cowboy movie" on this film, I wonder? Absolutely amazing! This movie was like a shot to the heart to me. It's a beautiful story about deep and genuine love, denied by society. How is it that someone slapped the easy tag of "gay cowboy movie" on this film, I wonder? "Brokeback Mountain" made me think about my own life, about the force of genuine feelings: those who are lucky enough to find true love in our short life should keep it like a treasure because this is ultimately what it counts. This film also made me think about the cruelty of some people, and the iniquities that homosexual people have suffered in different parts of the world, in different ages. I don't accept some criticism, according to which the characters are immoral because they are homosexual and cheat on their wives. Who said so didn't understand much of this film. [***SPOILERS***] Ennis has no tools to come to terms with his feelings and sexual attraction to Jack; he was broght up with a sense of horror towards homosexuality, which he considers as an aberrant condition, to be ashamed of and repress: this is unfortunately what was taught to him. The social background he comes from doesn't enable him to cope with this situation. He literally swallows his feelings and hardly ever expresses them (well, he hardly ever speaks). He desperately tries to forget about Jack and Brokeback Mountain and to live a "normal" llife with his wife. But, as the movie poster states, love is a of force of nature, and you cannot resist to it. All the characters, including the wives, are ultimately unhappy and defeated. But whose fault is it? Ennis's? I found this character deeply moving and absolutely realistic. This is Ang Lee's best film by far, and one the best movies I have ever seen; at least, the one who strikes the most: I can't get out of my mind its intense images, the laconic, incisive and beautiful lines, the haunting music. The pacing is calm: the writer of the original short story, Annie Proulx, and the two screenwriters, McMurtry and Ossana, managed to depict this peculiar and, at the same time, universal story (which is set in 1963-1983 Wyoming) with few but cutting masterstrokes. What makes this movie great is its perfect mixture of strong and poetic images (how could they give the Oscar for best cinematography to "Memoirs of Geisha"!? It's unbelievable...), its melancholic music, the meaningful silence and facial expressions of the characters, the scarse but mighty lines... There are no long dialogues: this would be irrealistic, since it's ultimately two young (and later mature) uneducated cowboys, grown in the narrow spaces of a provincial rural society. The actors' performances are absolutely stunning: Heath Ledger is in my opinion, the best of all, and it's a real shame he didn't get the awards he deserved! I was very disappointed too when I saw that the Academy Awards didn't give "Brokeback Mountain" the Oscar as best picture: I think this is outrageous and proves that the Academy Awards do not, too often, stand for quality, but, on the contrary, are the result of unpredictable marketing strategies or strange "ideologies". In this case, I think many of the voters acted out their prejudices against a still controversial theme, that is, gay love and homosexuality, in the secret of their voting booths. Yet, I am glad this masterpiece received dozens of other accolades, among which the "Leone d'Oro" (the golden lion) at the Venice Film Festival, back at the film's world premiere in September 2005: being Italian myself, I'm proud we paved the way for such an amazing piece of art. The pain experienced by every charcter is believable as is the anger. Ledger's does a great job of letting his confusion and its accompanying anger percolate beneath the cloak of social conformity. It is a garment that doesn't fit, yet he is terrified to remove it. This movie does attempt to help the viewer understand "why a person is gay." This was not Lee's intent and the movie is the better for it. Its intent is help us feel the depth of pain experienced when the object of love is socially unacceptable, and the unabating anger one experiences when forced to live dishonestly. Expand
