They would get too caught up in the gay aspect and totally lose out on the real meaning in the message. It's a darn shame too because those are the folks who need the message the most. I was very moved by the message and it has made me re-think about certain issues. This movie was so well done that at the end you go, oh and they were gay too. That's how it should be. Not a gay issue, a message of love and bonding that stems from love. Wow, wish I think of something deep to say. Anyway, this is the movie that I will be buying when it comes out on DVD! Expand

I'm a city boy, through and through. But in so many ways 'Brokeback Mountain' is my story too. But in so many ways 'Brokeback Mountain' is my story too. We all can feel the inchoate longing that Ennis and Jack experience because their love can't be acknowledged within a society bent on thwarting it, through early lessons of hatred, misguided marriage expectations and, if need be, murder. The film is remarkably faithful to Annie Proulx's spare and touching story, with appropriately sensitive added exposition of the effects on Jack and Ennis's wives and families. It was as exhilarating and heartwrenching the second time I saw it as it was on the first, but on the second visit I was much more able to notice the depth of nuance in all its aspects -- writing, performance, direction, editing. I find that I'm still moved almost to tears that such a truthful story has been so well told. I doubt that my second viewing will be my last; I hope that even hardened hearts might be able to understand if not identify, and perhaps soften a bit. Expand

The It would be impossible to go see this movie without knowing it is the "Gay Cowboy" movie, all the pre-release media blitz has made that obviously clear to everyone on the planet and beyond, that's o.k., it's good for business. The genius of this film, however, is that after 15 minutes it becomes a plain & simple love story about wanting and longing between two people who can't be together for their own reasons, be it denial or fear or even shame. Everything about this film is extraordinary! Rodrigo Prieto's camera work is epic, the simple guitar score is haunting and the acting, oh my the acting. Michelle Williams gives the same small, understated performance that won an Oscar for Beatrice Straight in Network, Jake Gyllenhaal, on the heels of Jarhead and Proof, shows enough talent here to make him not only an a-list actor but an Oscar nominee as well. But the true find of Brokeback Mountain is none other than teen heartthrob Heath Ledger, who gives a performance so achingly beautiful I really think he will give Philip Seymour Hoffman a run for this years Best Actor Oscar! He emerges from this film the way Johnny Depp did in Ed Wood. Its simply a miraculous piece of work. The only reason I did not give this film a 10 is the last 15 minutes of the film. When Jack gets the postcard returned to him, it might as well have been stamped "Wrap It Up" Other than that, it's as near a masterpiece as it can be and, to me, seems unbeatable for the Best Picture and Best Director Oscar come March. Bravo, Mr. Lee!! Expand

The film's relative dryness does not make it inert or lifeless but all the more subtly depressing and impactful. amazing performances, great film. Expand

This This movie was brilliant based not on it's story line but on the acting of Heath Ledger. I think the content will be in debate within the Marlboro sector, rednecks, rough necks, and anyone who has judgement against homosexuality. This movie caught me by surprise because I felt the same as Heath's wife when she witnessed him and Jack engaging in more than just a handshake and hug when meeting each other, I too felt like seeing two manly men kissing quite foreign and odd. It was like imprinting a child's first view at something for the first time, you look with amazement and no judgement, simply something brand new, almost like seeing a martian. I can't remember what the scenery of the movie depicted because the character reference by Heath made you dumb found. Expand

Brokeback Mountain is very artistic, both in its technicalities (acting, writing, direction, cinematography, score) and in its heavy use of symbolism. Yes, it is deserving of all the accolades it has received. But the excessive awards attention for Brokeback Mountain is also a double-edged sword for the film. There's so much hype built around it that some first-time viewers will be searching for a different movie than what is actually shown. Brokeback Mountain is no gay Titanic or Gone With The Wind. It doesn't pack an emotional punch or manipulate you in ways most mainstream romances do. Brokeback Mountain is a quiet, subtle love story about two men trying to cope with this "thing" that they share. It's impact is more of a haunting experience - the movie really works it's magic AFTER it is over. (I'm also happy to say that Brokeback Mountain is one of few films that actually gets BETTER upon each viewing.) And it's more than just a love story... Brokeback illustrates the pains of loneliness and regret as we watch these characters make choices that slowly tear their lives apart. The haunting questions of "what if?" and "all that could have been?" That is something everyone can relate to - straight or gay. Sometimes we make choices because they seem the most logical. But in the long run, are those choices really worth the suffering and regret? Great, great movie. (By the way, anyone who sees Brokeback Mountain as contrived propaganda or something with an agenda is CLEARLY missing the point of this film.) Expand

The true tragedy was that these men did not get the chance to have a fulfilling loving relationship with one another because of society's old-fashioned, moronic social taboos. It is a story of what might have been (and what, in my opintion, SHOULD have been), and a very human story of the pain we bring ourselves when we deny our hearts' most primal desire: to love whom that heart directs us. This film will surely outlast any contrived or real "shock and awe" to be remembered as a real trailblazer, and long noted as the achingly exquisite piece of art that it is, whether or not it wins even one Academy Award! While some complained that it was too slow, inexpressive, or there wasn't enough lead up to the love between Jack and Ennis, many of us thoroughly appreciated the complexities being masterfully woven for us on the big screen. I guess people want Splendor in the Grass type love, or loud verbalizations of "Oh Honey! I love you so!" or more sex, or crying scenes maybe. Such a thing would totally defeat a central theme of this film; the point was that these were two humans falling in a love that they couldn't speak of, and didnt' fully know how to explain. Hello? Wasn't that the point? But the fact that they reignite and can't forget each other only confirms the power of their love. I can't believe (well actually I can) the poster on here who said he hadn't seen the film until all "the buzz" goes away, then goes on to give the film a negative review. Its no wonder the real Jack and Ennises of the world feel they have to hide their love. This is not just some move about men who can't express themselves. Unfortunately, there are many people who the art of subtley is completely lost on, not to mention the inability to grasp what a complex film is. Some of us go the movies to experience a story, not just be "entertained" as one person said. If we want that, there is plenty out there. Its sad that every emotion or experience has to be verbalized in order for people to get it. I guess this is probably the reason why some people like Crash so much, it does all of your thinking for you. I guess the studies that say fewer and fewer Americans read anymore is true; reading makes a person think, and that increases critical thinking skills and that effects everything else we do, even how we view films. Kudos to Ang Lee and everyone involved in this film, for giving what many of us long for, a deep, thought provoking cinematic experience so masterfully woven and told. Expand

The performances by all the cast are sublime and, yes, everything you've heard about Mr Ledger's portrayal is true and I say this without meaning to diminish Mr Gyllanhal's work or that of the other supporting players. Ang Lee has made a film that matches the best work of William Wyler's "the Best Years of Our Lives," and "The Heiress." Ledger gives a landmark performance that "wows" like Brando's in "On the Waterfront" and Dean's in "Rebel Without a Cause," Newman in "Hud," and indeed, Michelle Williams is as memorable as Patricia Neal's heartbreaking performance in "Brokeback" screenwriter McMurtry's "Hud." McMurtry has now written the screenplays for three great American contempoary Westerns -- "Hud," "The Last Picture Show," and now, in perhaps he and writing partner Diana Ossana's finest hour, "Brokeback Mountain." And finally, in a time when so few movies seem to be able to stand-and-deliver a gut-punching last line the likes of "Come on Jake, it's Chinatown," "Brokeback Mountain" contains the most richest last sentence of any film in a long, long time. It's the great writer Annie Proulix's words, slightly, sensitively repositioned in the narrative by McMurtry and Ossana and placed within a heartreching closing shot by Ang Lee and cinematogrpher Rodrigo Prieto. It moments like this, when every aspect of filmmaking comes together that reminds us why film is one of the greatest of the arts. Lee's film is one for the ages -- when, in future decades, the story won't appear particularly "controversial," like all great films, the emotional impact it has on viewers will continue to fee true and right. It was one of the most thought provoking and moving film experiences I've had in recent memory. Ang Lee proves that he can tell a compelling love story without falling into the usual trappings of Hollywood formula. It isn't preachy. It doesn't fall into trite melodrama. It doesn't try to paint these guys as perfect heroes, but rather flawed humans caught in an impossible situation. Most importantly, it doesn't shy away from its depiction of same-sex love or the harsh realities of the time. It is truly is one of the most touching and realistic love stories ever told on film. It was subtle in places where it could have made a play for our emotions. It didn't dwell on the sex - in fact it would have been just fine without it - just focusing on the intense feelings that these two men develop for each other. Only in the movies does EVERYBODY have immediate sex, followed by a relationship. What it made me realize is that by the 60's we'd lost the capacity for intimate friendships (probably a couple hundred years ago). Would that the agendas could be forgotten, and this movie appreciated for the excellent story that it tells. Expand
