Beautifully shot, wonderfully acted, brilliantly directed.... I can't say enough about this! See with an open mind, and with patience as it has a slow but beautiful begining. Sit back and just take it in.

Sure enough - the slow pace might seem boring to those less observant, but this is not an action movie. It is a fine and true ringing story of two young men who find themselves in a situation that is not easy for them to handle. Love between two men is still "forbidden" in many peoples minds. Jack is aware (of course) of what people would think of him but that doesn´t stop him from trying to find his true love. I think that Jack in many ways has an innocence to him - he has still not seen the evil things people can do to those who are different. Ennis on the other hand is very afraid to be different - to be gay. The reason that Ennis is so afraid is because his father showed him at an early age what can happen to gay people. The acting in this movie is so wonderful - Heath´s and Jake´s in particular, and everything about the story and the setting is beautiful as well. This movie only contains a very short sex scene, with no nudity. It is a far cry from anything pornograpic. Yes, this film contains some adultery (like many, many, other films) but it`s not portrayed as something noble or good in any way. Alma´s heartbreak is one of the strongest scenes in this film! However both Ennis and Jack are good fathers who care for their children - the love Ennis has for his daughters is really beautiful to see. The lenght of this review perhaps suggests that I´m absorbed by this film - and that´s definately true!! I really have come to love this film, because it took my heart totally of guard! :-) An interesting thing: You never see the face of Ennis´s father in the flashback - he is very much an threatening person in young Ennis´s life. On the contrary Jacks mother is shown as a loving woman and a loving christian - notice the cross on the wall behind her as she speaks to Ennis. Perhaps a little hint to the religious right - Chistianity is about love - not hate! Expand

Best movie, best actors, best scenery, best music, and best story ever. I can still see the wives' faces in their moment of discovery, the bright red lipstick and the sensitivity of the entire cast. It should have won the Oscar... over Crash!

I wish it could have ended differently, though of course I know why it couldn't. This is a tragic love story in the tradition of Romeo and Juliet. Gyllenhall and Ledger give the best performances I've seen coming out of Hollywood in a long long time (as do the women - go girls!) I am so excited that this movie is getting the critical attention it deserves. Now if only the skeptics will give it chance. Please do. It will change you. And I don't say that as someone trying to push a "homosexual agenda" (whatever that is?). I'm straight and happily married. But my sexuality doesn't stand in the way of my ability to recognize True Love when I see it. Thank you so much to everyone involved with this film. I have read some of the christian right wing blather about the two young guys being unfaithful to their wives. I guess we did not see the same film - because at the end of their first summer together they were both single , but ledger's character Ennis was so conflicted he could not allow his real feelings to surface the way Gyllenhaall's character Jack was able to - that is why Ennis walked into in the alley way and crumbled / collapsed in a fit of rage and denial . All that pain and missed oportunity began there - that was the chance for the future wives to never have been brought into the picture and all thier pains and anguishes. Missed opportunity because of what a hateful society and hateful parents wrought on thier offspring they profess to love. With all the beauty and pain this film evokes, we will now take a gaint leap forward as a culture of people able to love more and tolerate hating less. Expand

The mountain scenes are spectacularly beautiful, and the movie flawless. The story haunts you, for days after. I saw the movie on the day after Christmas, and I thought of the angels appearing to shepherds tending their flocks... how the seemingly least among us can receive a heavenly gift in the most wondrous way. And, at the end, I couldn't help but think of the crucifixion of Matthew Shepard on a cold Wyoming night. Another masterful work of his that comes to mind is "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon." There a yet unknown Ziyi Zhang was forced into a marriage because of her social status. Here Mr. Lee uses two gay cowboys in 1960s west to show the backdrops and tragedy that is forbidden love. It is based off of Annie Proulx's 1997 short story with the same title. Proulx's short story was quite a bit better. It allowed the reader to fully comprehend the pain and angst of these two men, something not even film geniuses, such as Larry McMurty, may have fully brought to the screen. The best example I can use to illustate this point is when the two men hit rock bottom. In her novella, a mere fifty-five pages, these men enjoy each others' company on a camping trip, wherein the film you only see the aftermath of this trip. Of course it is hard story to adapt to the screen, but an important one, and the performance Heath Ledger brings to his character, Ennis del Mar, is brilliantly subtle and highly nuanced. Jake Gyllenhaal, Anne Hathaway, Michelle Williams, and Linda Cardeliini all give beautiful performances that will make interested viewers ache. A beautiful film that is also an important one. The reason that Ennis and Jack are such tragic figures and the love between them is so unique is because the society wouldn't allow their relationship to flourish. The loss and sadness are attributed to the intolerence and hatred that were imposed on gay people even in today's society. Expand

Can't you even sense a prejudiced, homophobic comment when you utter it? I heard Gael Garcia Bernal say, when asked about whether playing a gay character was hard, say something like "I never understand that question. Gay characters have sex. I have sex too. Gay characters love. I love too. Why is it that no one asks me if it would be hard to play a murderer, a rapist, a torturer?" Ennis and Jack should have been able to have a relationship without fearing reprisal, rejection, self-loathing, and intolerance. It doesn't take reading too many of these comments here to understand that 1963 and 2006 aren't all that different after all. Expand

It is not a fast paced movie nor should it be. Without expressing exaggerated emotions and over-the-top performances, this film gets across the type of true, internal and unconditional love for someone that one cannot let go. If you go to see this movie expecting a sweeping epic then you will hate it. The power of this film is in it's quiet tenderness. Especially portrayed by ALL the the actors. If you're homophobic and like to force your religious ideologic beliefs on others then you'll hate it as well. The humanity of the film is it's "silent pain", and EVERYONE can relate to that emotion at some point in their life. Expand

This film draws you into the lives of Ennis and Jack within minutes. Following the story through this film, it's easy to see why it has gotten so much hype. The topic is controversial - a love and bond that can't ever fully be enjoyed because of the stigma of gay love especially dating as far back as their relationship began (1963). My heart ached during this film because Lee forced me to empathize for characters I may not have normally been able to. Expand

This is a rare quality film. Jake Gyllenhaal is a brilliant optimistic isolated heart broken Jack twist, Heath ledger is a stunning portrait of turmoil and self hatred, Michelle Williams and Anne Hathaway show a range beyond any of their previous work portraying 2 different versions of a wife who cannot connect with the man whom she loves. The energy behind everything that goes unsaid is really the underlying constant in our own hearts. Sexuality is this films novelty but by no means it's limit. The story is presented as it lay. No cause, no reason, no blame, no answers... just like real life. The images are beautiful, the plot atypical, and the effort by all involved incredible. For all who make comments about its characters without having seen the film, you are a bigot. You are no different from someone who discriminates against race, class, sexuality, disability, gender, height, weight, number of hairs on your head, or level of education. Heath Ledger and Jake Gylenhaal, giving two of the year's best performances that are way beyond anything they have ever done, are both overwhelmng and heartbreaking as they try to come to terms with the hand that life has dealt them. Because in doing so, they cause havoc to those who love them as well as to themselves, they do not emerge as heroic figures, but all too human ones. A top notch supporting cast complements their outstanding work. Expand
