I really dont understand why the critics bashed it so hard. Some people think the movie got heavy handed with SJW issues, but I honestly felt it was just great world building - not necessarily a social commentary on the way our world currently is.

As a person who loves fantasy movies, as well as buddy cop films, this really just hit the nail on the head in all the right places. It was a really unique and fresh idea mixing fantasy with modern gritty/urban environments. I highly recommend watching it if you're into the same stuff I am. You wont regret it.

I'd have liked a bit more magic and futuristic cyberpunk thrown in for good measure, but enjoyed it none the less.
I'm also good with suspension of disbelief and have no problems letting go of normal world restrictions when watching something like this. Waiting for second installment. Wouldn't mind a series either.

Bright is a well executed present day "Shadowrun" setting. They do a great job with the races and environment and deliver a very entertaining film. It's not trying to be lofty or deal with ideals, it's just giving you the story. The only disappointment here is that this was developed as a movie and not a longer standing series. Weirdly enough, this movie really didn't need to be set in a fantasy world. That was all purely extraneous window dressing. Despite that, this was an excellent movie, just not for the reasons you think.

The main criticisms I've heard are these. 1) The fantasy world was never explained. 2) Will Smith was unpleasant and didn't share chemistry with his partner. 3) The politics of the movie were incorrect or somehow missed the mark.

I'll take these in order and in doing so explain why this worked.

First, the setting. Yeah, the world was never really explained. That's because the movie was a personal drama between the two main characters. Everything else was just to either move them through their journey or give them something to push against. In some ways, I wonder if the fantasy world was purely meant to increase the profile of the movie and get eyeballs on it, while Ayers really just wanted to make a tough, realistic personal drama.

In any event, you're right, the world was never really explained. Maybe that's because Netflix wants to save that for the sequels, or the series. Maybe it's because the author and director wanted the audience to be able to fill in some of the elements in his world with elements in yours (the experience of racism, distrust of cops, media depictions of urban LA) while also making it seem different enough that this maintained a clear fictional element. Who knows. Most movies with an action element are littered with unbelievable plot MacGuffins which the movie tries to make believable. Bright just says "yeah, it's magic, don't worry about it". It's a refreshing change.

2) Will Smith was bad. I think this is, in truth, "Will Smith was unpleasant". The problem is, that's the point. He's meant to be a morally grey character. The movie probably can't let him fully turn heel, but they also didn't really want him being the usual wise-cracking boy scout. He was a guy struggling against his prejudice... or more accurately, who occasionally chose to struggle against his prejudice but was pretty successful when he did. I like the latter message, people ultimately have a choice whether to be biased, but many choose to never actually view it as a choice. I could see people hating how many of the early movie interactions between the partners were awkward and uncomfortable. Those guys were legitimately uncomfortable with each other, though both occasionally tried make it better. That's the point.

So, yeah, Will Smith was a truly unsympathetic character much of the time. That, to me, is playing the character and not playing stereotypical Will Smith.

3) The movie glorifies cops / denigrates cops (I've heard both) / oversimplifies racism / projects racial stereotypes onto the orcs/etc.

I don't have as strong an answer to this one. Yes, it embraces stereotypes, the movie is about people coming to grips with their own stereotypes. It leans into stereotypical media glamorization of gang life. It equates poverty with gangs and violence. All of these are true, but in part, rest on accusations that the movie promotes the wrong image by associating groups through its gaze. Poor and gangs are associated because they both show up in the same place. Stereotypes and racial minorities are linked because they show up in the same place.

The charge about stereotyping minorities is, to some extent, true. There are some lazy narrative moments where caricatures are the only thing you notice about some ethnic groups. Some of the criticism about politics seems a bit nit-picky; the movie is trying to tell a story about a person struggling against their own prejudice and they kind of have to show prejudice around him in order to make it work. There are some lazy choices, but they always seem to be in service of the main story whose message is a good one.

I will say, I don't quite get the arguments about the role of cops because they were both hero and villain, so it seems like a relatively fair treatment.

Anyway, the advertising may have been a bit deceptive because the fantasy world got top billing and never became more than scenery and a plot device. As a film and a narrative, it's excellent.

Critics are afraid they will lose their meal ticket if streaming movies on NETflix are better then the 200 million dollar Disney star wars garbage.

This movie has several things going for it that are apparently over the critics heads. 1. World Building and Mythology. This world draws you in, it makes you want to know more about the Darklord, the orcs the elves.....Its the Shadowrun universe essentially.

2. Good stars being stars. They let the stars of the movie shine BRIGHT. 3. Good fun action and campy 80's like action movie one liners. "We going to **** bar die." It has its flaws some of the action seems to stutter, from re-shoots or editing sometimes it jumps around a bit in a weird way. It also doesn't build the baddies up quiet enough despite the lead elf really seeming like an interesting character.

On top of this, you can literally see this for half the price of a movie theater movie finish your two hours then jump to its other awesome content.

Great Job Netflix. I would love to see a 12 part series set in this world to continue to build its back story and mythology.

If you have Netflix subscription, please give it a try and watch it - it will not cost you anything apart from your time. I really loved the first half of the movie, the second one was somewhat weaker for me, but still ok. So if you hate it after first 30 minutes it is probably not for you.
BTW I give it 9/10 to counter-balance negative “critics” reviews - if professionals don’t have to be objective, why should I after all :-). If I were objective I would still give it something around 7-8 though...

Much better movie than I thought, especially since netflix is vomiting out cheap productions just to maintain their clients. Not the best movie I've seen but a very interesting b-fantasy plot.

The world in the movie gave me a lot of Shadowrun vibes, but of course it wasn't as integrate and nuanced as the world of Shadowrun but it did pull of the world in a way that makes a bit of sense.

Would definitely recommend a watch to quench the thirst after all the bad movies that came out in 2017

Those familiar with the tabletop RPG "shadowrun" may find similar veins to this in its tone. Though, given it's meant to be contemporary urban fantasy it eschews the cyberpunk and dystopian aesthetics of that namesake. Overall, the film has a lot going for it, even with the utter lambasting critics are giving this film. It doesn't diminish that the film has good chemistry between Nick Jakoby (The United States first orcish officer) and Daryl Ward (A cop looking to survive the 'diversity hire'). All the acting is spot on, and fits their roles well. And the action does not disappoint both in its variety and visceral qualities.

If I had to give this film any negatives its that it is a bit bog standard cop drama film. Even with the magical elements. As I said earlier the film seems like it fails to fully capitalize on its interesting setting and more world building could be done in a 'sidequel' with another film set in the same universe (or perhaps a netflix series if they thought to do one). I recommend giving this film a shot. Don't go in with expectations of a highbrow or intellectual film. Think training day with orcs, elves, and some magic.

It's foul mouthed and violent.. things I don't like a whole lot - but it's a great cop short story in a big fantasy world, complete with some humor and social commentary. Reminded me of all the things I like about Discworld novels. It certainly captures some of the feel of "The Night Watch" thread of novels by the late Terry Pratchett though certainly a little more serious, and perhaps less clever (don't want to offend any Terry Pratchett fans - but I am one, and I really enjoyed this). This definitely feels ambitious - in that there aren't many other movies out there that splash into a setting like this. The story isn't super special - it's a typical cops on the run story, but the attention to detail in the setting, the history of the world that's only hinted at - a cultural backdrop that is new but still familiar. The Last Witch Hunter attempted a grand setting like this - but this was much much better. Expand

Food for thought. What a coincidence that a distinctly average blockbuster movie releasing directly on an easily accessible consumer platform, where critic reviews aren't really relevant because anyone can turn it off after 15 minutes if they don't like it with no loss of money, is getting absolutely destroyed by mainstream media. Just saying. Meanwhile, a distinctly average and seriously unimpressive Hollywood big name franchise release is getting praised as the new definition of storytelling. Just saying.

Politics aside, and make no mistake, the critic reviews for this movie are mostly politics, Bright is a decent movie that manages to be entertaining. Is it Oscar material? Hell no. It's a competent movie, with high budget effects that at least for me managed to stay enjoyable from start to finish. It did not pretend to be smarter than it looks, and there are definitely things to criticize here, but under no circumstances does this movie deserve the bashing it is getting from critics. I find the incredibly transparent politics and hypocrisy from some "big name" reviewers to be absolutely disgusting.

The Breakdown

Performances - Smith has portrayed this type of character before so probably not a huge stretch, he is still enjoyable to watch with his natural enthusiasm flowing through.

This is my favorite Edgerton performance, slap some paint on the man and he really seems to fall into the role. If you didnt know it was him under all that makeup you would be hard pressed to guess who it is.

Supporting cast is pretty solid if not slightly cliche/generic, bad guys felt a little meh but again not terrible.

Visuals: Beautiful film across the board, i feel like they sat down with a map of L.A and put some thought into how it would look with fantasy inspirations. Makeup and sets are on point through out, CG was right up there as well.

Plot: This is probably my only really gripe, pacing feels really off and for a film that takes place of the course of a night it just seems to be a little rushed. I really really hope they expand on this world and either develop a series or more movies (i think one more film is at least in the works) as there is a lot to be explored here.

Overall, turn your brain down a little, dont over think it and enjoy everything this movie does right. Its not a dumb film but if you start thinking about the premise too much you are probably missing the point.

Much better than I'd anticipated after hearing of the critics' reviews. Quite enjoyable, surprisingly nuanced. Recommended.

Far better than its score suggests. While relatively predictable, sometimes predictable can be a good thing. Such is the case of Will Smith's acting ability.

Overall this is yet another case where metacritic shines the light on the disparity

Overall this is yet another case where metacritic shines the light on the disparity between amateur and professional critics. A trend that is happening more and more frequently.

Overall it is a watchable affair, with a far more intriguing premise to draw from than what the production offers.
