This was a original movie by far. Can't say that I was looking forward to this movie just by looking at the trailer, but I most say I enjoyed this movie. I hope that Netflix will allow David Ayer to direct an second installment.

Did I have fun or not?

I rarely expect high art when I'm going to watch a Will Smith movie so I didn't expect one going into this. Also I am factoring price into this as effectively I consider the price of a netflix subscription to be a sunk cost already so it's effectively free imo. So a good fun cop movie but with orcs, elves and magic. Some good jokes, yeah some of the action scenes were a bit weak but after having seen how bad the action sequences were in iron fist I can forgive a lot. I do admit to REALLY loving the police procedural/buddy cop movie genres though so I will forgive a lot. So I'd say on a quiet night during the holidays when you're zoning out after too big of a Christmas dinner this is a good enough distraction for a couple of hours.

I didn't know what I was getting myself into when I turned this on, but the trailer got me hooked. I must say that I was pleasantly surprised by Bright. Kudos to Netflix for trying something new.

For starters, the movie gets major props for blending Tolkein-like creatures in a modern day big city -- a concept I'd never seen before. As such, there was a surprising amount of world-building that goes on which immerses you in this racial/class dynamic in between Elves, Humans and Orcs and the fallout of a magical war that happened prior to this movie taking place. The characters slowly explain the background plot to the audience in their dialogue with each other, giving you enough of a gist to follow along. There's still a lot more left to explained about this world, particularly the foreshadowing of an upcoming big bad, but it doesn't detract from the plot we see in front of us. If anything, it leaves me both satisfied and wanting more.

The characters themselves are portrayed well, with Jakoby stealing the show hands down. Surprisingly, Will Smith's performance leaves more to be desired, but he doesn't necessarily hurt the story. Noomi Rapace was fierce and I found myself actually feeling tension when she and her posse came after our heroes. All in all, I enjoyed Bright. I am definitely piqued by this realworld-Tolkein situation and I am eager to see more in the upcoming sequel.

As for the professional critics, I think they've been bribed by competitors of netflix to give bad reviews. I don't understand how there could be any other explanation as to why its so negative.

I had a lot of fun watching it and I will recommend it to my friends. It's not perfect, but it's not a waste of time like David Ayers last movie, Suicide Squad. So why the bad reviews? They say that the critics are disconnected with the audience. Personally I think that they are just deep in the pockets of Hollywood movie studios. Here is solid proof that Netflix can make an entertaining blockbuster and Hollywood does not want that. I think it's as simple is that. Watch the movie yourselves, it's worth your time and money. It was never going to be a world beater or win an Oscar but what it does do is meld Will Smith's other buddy cop movies Bad Boys with Dungeons & Dragons. Plenty of fun one liners, plenty of action and despite people trying their best to find some social commentary about the treatment of different races Bright is purely an action movie set in a fantasy world and newsflash to the reviewers out there fantasy worlds are often segregated. If you are in to fantasy settings and movies like this then it's a fun way to spend 2 hours, if you are a stuck up movie critic then best you go watch Schindler's list again. However, if you approach this movie with the goal of being entertained then it does that in spades. New cop vs old veteran cop vs the world is something already done. New cop vs old veteran cop vs the world with magic and fantasy characters is something new. This movie was entertaining and more than worth the 2 hr run time on it. Will Smith is a fun actor to watch and his Orc partner Joel Edgerton was definitely an entertaining duo to watch as they interact onscreen. There will be cliches and one liners but this movies fresh approach make them forgivable and enjoyable. The blending of Dungeons and Dragons and War Craft along with movie themes from Dirty Harry and Lethal Weapon is a blast of freshness in a movie industry that has become increasingly stagnant and formulaic in their approach to creating guaranteed moneymakers. The creativity and imagination used in this movie is something I enjoyed immensely with the relatively seamless blending of modern and fantasy something that any nerd would enjoy. I enjoyed this movie a lot and hope to see more of this from Netflix in the future. Expand

Critics hated that one too, but it made a zillion dollars so obviously they're gonna hate it. Why listen to anything these conceited blowhards say anyway? How many critics you know have made a blockbuster movie? Not every fantasy/super hero movie is gonna be a Dark Knight. And I wasn't crazy about Wonder Woman (which most critics loved). I respect all opinions but the critics come from a critical perspective that has very little to do with whether a film is entertaining or not. That depends very much on the individual. Expand

For me, the main basis of a good movie, is that it's entertaining, however, a great movie is more than that. Bright falls into the good category. That being said, the story mostly follows the cookie cutter big budget narrative. There were some twists, namely two "big " ones, that were very clearly going to play out the way they did. There were also a handful of instances where I was yelling at the screen because the characters either did, or failed to do, insanely stupid things. Nearly all movies are guilty of this to some degree, but bright would receive multiple concurrent life sentences if this was a punishable crime. However, these fairly glaring flaws would bring my score down much farther on an overall less entertaining film. I had a surprisingly good time watching it, and will recommend others give it a chance. Bright is far from perfect, but undoubtedly better than the critic score conveys. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Don't read the "professional" critic reviews. These are the same people who sacrificed their first born children to the glory of "The Last Jedi". They want everything to fit into their little academic box where they want to see everything as a social commentary. "Bright" is not. Or if it is, it's one where they just don't agree with the message.

For starters, you aren't supposed to like the main character, Ward, played by Will Smith. This is established early on in the movie where he asks for a new partner who isn't an orc (named Nick Jakobi) and is told point blank that the one no one likes isn't Nick... it's Ward. And it's probably the reason Jakobi got stuck with him in the first place (one hated for his race, the other for his attitude). And it's easy to see why. Ward is abrasive to his coworkers, snarky to his superiors, and bordering verbally abusive to Nick. The only positive relationships shown is to his family, including his daughter, who he's trying to raise to be better than him. So, at least he knows how much of a total dick he is.

Nick is the total opposite. Nick is bright eyed, optimistic, and incredibly polite to almost everyone, even Ward. He wants to improve the image of Orcs by becoming a cop, a choice that has made him a pariah to his own people. He's faced with hardship after hardship, making you want for him to succeed.

Now the story. Very basic, but all the better for it. None of the character decisions are informed solely by grabbing either the villain ball or stupid ball. Only have 1 person to send after a target in a fortified safehouse? Give her a MicroNuke (magic wand). All you coworkers want to steal the MicroNuke to sell on the black market and tell you to kill your partner in order to pin the blame on him? Kill the coworkers and go on the run, turning yourself into a friend in another department who at the least is willing to hear you out. Extremist assassins kill your friend and you are on the run again? Turn yourself into the FBI's MicroNuke team. Want to advance the status of your people, or just want to heal a disability? Take the MicroNuke. Also, the threat level rises through the story like it should, with the heroes facing first gangbangers, then an Orc gang, and finally said extremist assassins.

If you want world building, then you WILL be disappointed in this story. That's not necessarily a bad thing, it's just the result of a limitation in the medium. There's some interesting things you can pick up if you pay attention, but it sacrificed it in order to tell the story. Personally, I don't mind. If it's good, I'll read the expanded universe if it comes out (I'm looking at you, JRR Tolkien).

For you social commentary nerds, it DOES have some of that, but it takes back seat to the story, like it should, IMO. You have to pay attention. Aside from the obvious anti-racism message, there's some interesting commentary on the militarization of Police and the effects it can have in perpetuating the cycle of distrust between the cops and residents of the slums, along with a message about relegating a certain group to different jobs (all of the cops save Jakobi are humans, Orcs seem to have a big presence in the military, and Elves seem to be exclusively white-collar) and how pigeon-holing just leads to resentment and clannishness.

It's a great movie, and the only things I can find wrong with it is the lighting, and how often half their faces are obscured in shadows, and how some of the dialogue is very awkward at times. But hell, I've seen movies with amazing dialogue and cinematography but utterly atrocious story that they sacrificed for some gaudy message or world building.

The thing is that paid movie critics , along with people in lockstep with today's autocratic/liberal society, will equally hate such a movie because it show everything and everyone is in shadow, and there are no absolute good's. They media will also hate this movie because it is the first movie with a lead star, given a great budget and distributed to people's homes instead of movie distributors and their cabal of limited screenings and advertisement. Fun a lot! Remembers my old Shadowrun RPG sessions! Like it! It´s a good movie to watch with a great bowl of popcorn and some sodas. It´s not a drama for the boring critics, it´s a movie for the public which likes a good action/cop/fantasy movie.

there were many great movies, which had very bad reviews at the beginning - demolition man, fifth element etc. Now they suddenly got a lot of better reviews, because they are said to be classics.
They are very good made entertaining movies, just like this one. Will it become a classic? i don’t know that for sure, but i think people will watch this movie in few years again, and then in the next few years again, because it is that kind of movie. It is funny, entertaining, great action, it has everything the classics had.

The pacing was a little weird in a few places and there were some awkward jokes thrown into places where they didn't belong, but overall this was an interesting and well done thriller. They don't spend overly long trying to explain the concept of the world to us, which is nice. They give the audience credit to just kinda roll with the setting and overall ends up giving us a pretty realistic depiction of a world with magic and rolling into a simple, yet believable story. I have a good feeling that most of the critics didn't even watch the movie and likely just read the synopsis and just made assumptions. Hopefully Netflix realizes that it shouldn't pay attention to them because this movie is a good setup for some really awesome future stories. I am looking forward to the next of these movies. The film has some decent action scenes and VFX but it throws out plausibility in the final 20-mins and that's its biggest disappointment. One other thing. This film had more of a tv series feel to it than a movie, especially since I watched it in 1/2 hr chunks. I think it would do better as a short series maybe. To me, its announced sequel equates to a second season. Expand

Was intrigued by the difference between the critics and the average person, so I broke my longstanding aversion to netflix originals (make no mistake, 99% of them are garbage, Bright is the 1% that stands out) to check it out.

Bright is clearly an amateur hour production, with parts with cringe worthy dialogue (the racial crap is pathetic, immature, and clearly leftwing propaganda), in addition to a few scenes where you just can't hear the main characters talking.

That being said, Will Smith and the others are either great or at worst good actors, which makes for an enjoyable watch. If you like buddy cop movies you need to check Bright out. It's good and has a nice fantasy twist on an otherwise overdone genre. Will Smith is great as usual. Too bad they didn't flesh out the world more, but it is at its core a buddy cop movie first, the fantasy setting is unfortunately more of an afterthought than anything else.

The best way I can think to describe it would be a "pretty okay" movie. Not great, but not bad either. Worth a watch.

The critics seem perhaps not to have quite understood the fact that the allegories of this movie aren't quite as shallow they would appear at face value. But that's critics for you.

Bright is a good movie. Sure, there's a lot of exposition, some really eye-rolling overdone set pieces, and more than a few corny moments. But unlike most modern action movies, it has something to say, it says it with surprisingly restrained pacing, the dialogue is mostly engaging, and it's exciting.

And sure, it utilizes all of the typical fantasy tropes, from the macguffin to the chosen one, but it feels like the writers knew that, and that was half the point.

One thing I really liked was the choice to cast a black man in the roll of somebody on the perpetrating end of racism, while conversely casting the orks as the ones who historically did something wrong and the humans as the ones who wouldn't forgive them for it.

I'm ready for Bright 2, or even better, Bright the TV show.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I try to pick movies to watch based on reviews of both critics and normal viewers. I was looking up this movie and it had a score of 28 from critics and 75 from viewers. SO I think I give it a chance to see the discrepancy I must say, THANK GOD, I decided to watch this movie. A good way to describe the setting of this movie is Lord of the Rings meets District 9. This is a "modern" world that has Elves, Humans, and Orcs. The Elves are the high class race, living in expensive part of the city called Elfcity. The humans seem to be the butlers of the world. The Orcs live in many different communities. They believe in clan rules and law. They considered the lowest class (among the 3) because of their transgression 2,000 years ago. There are other classes like Dragon which we see very briefly. We see small fairies which are considered rodents. Now, the movie centers around a human cop called Ward and his Orc partner Jakoby. They run into a elf who has a wand. A wand is magical and able to cast abilities by those who can wield it (called Brights). The movie does a great job building the world, characters, and setting. You can definitely feel like a sequel will be made and it would be great. I give this movie a 7.5/10 Expand

So, again, why did "professional" critics decide that this is the movie they must review to hell? Is it because its Netflix special? Would the reviews be different if it was in movies instead? I dont know, but sure looks like it.

Bright is an incredibly bold, original piece of filmmaking that blends elements from neo-noir, ultra-violence, high-fantasy, cop drama, and suspense-thriller into it's own, completely unique style. The film even got a few chuckles out of me! At times, Bright feels a little bloated, some scenes are a little hokey, and a few plot elements never go anywhere, but these are nicely balanced out by some great action choreography, beautiful cinematography, and some really nice acting from our three leads. The acting was appropriate for the genre. Will Smith is great at playing Will Smith; not a necessarily a dig at the movie just at his range. Overall a well executed simple story (not a dig either) with exception of the dialogue, which could have been more engaging. And most importantly, kudos to the writer who did NOT turn an easily politicize-able topic into a SJW riddled fiasco (The Last Jedi). It addressed both sides evenly. Which, in part, is why I think the critics panned this movie; for the lack of police bashing disguised as "biting political commentary". Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don't know what the critics were expecting out of Bright. I saw it with no particular expectation and I had a lot of fun watching it. It's an action flick setup in the future with fantasy elements. This film serve as an introduction to a world with many races, which remind me A LOT about Defiance TV show. The story is interesting as it brings a lot of lore into the table. Maybe the acting is not perfect but it serves the plot perfectly. I like the wand stuff, as it is compared to a nuclear weapon. I like the racist side of the story with the Orcs and even the Elves...and all the tribulations that goes with it. The Fx are pretty good...Maybe the point where the movie fails is the motivation of the FBI of magic in all this. It's never really clear on which side they stand. They announced a follow up and I hope it will be even better. I give it a 75%. Very entertaining and not deserving the critics unfair ranting. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Many of the action scenes in this movie are awesome, and the soundtrack is dynamite. There are some issues, but the good in this movie mostly overcomes the bad. Expand

However, the universe is great and the relation between all races is very interesting. It would be great to see that universe once again but in a serie that would develop it further. Also, Joel Edgerton's character is very likeable. Expand

But also there was a lot of great performances from actors, amazingly shot action scenes, there was a big chunk of entertainment and also a lot of fun. The dark humor for adult is really good and makes for some hilarious situations. I don't know what's with all the hate but I can assure you that the general audience would love this movie and they did. Sadly as I said at the beginning not all things where done or pushed to the limits, but what was really cared for where the visuals and that futuristic vibe combined with today's worlds. Also what a lot of people fail to see is the message of the movie. The ending really reflects on all the hate, racism and oppression with all these issues indicating issues from our real world. Overall it was a good movie entertaining and fun to watch but it could have been a lot better if the writer and director decided to give us more of the world, more immersion and mostly depth to the plot. Will Smith was a believable cop in this action thriller. I highly suggested giving this film a chance and ignoring the bad ratings. I personally enjoyed the human mixed with magical in the film. I want to see more of this kind of movies, even with the cliches, which are of course there cause in fact they work, in a cinematography language I mean. It would be very interesting to see the develop of the cop duet and the following story. Not for any Oscars, Yes, for having fun and eat popcorn! :) Expand

"Bright" un film hecho por la plataforma de streaming "Netflix" y protagonizada por Will Smith.
Personalmente la película me ha entretenido, me ha recordado en algunos momentos al "Señor de los Anillos" por el tema de los orcos, elfos, el señor oscuro, etc. Se hace amena hasta el final, con acción sin cesar de la mitad de la peli hasta que acaba. Me gustó. Le doy un 7 sobre 10. Mi Decimoquinta crítica u/o review de la sección de Movies.

I was curious about this film. After i watched this i said like: wow, that was nice. I really like the story, it wasn't as simple as I expected. I recommend this film to all action or fantazy fan's. It's worth to watch it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Bright is an urban fantasy action film, directed by David Ayer(Fury, Suicide Squad) and starring Will Smith and Joel Edgerton. On one hand, it is an exciting adventure story that shows a hero's journey from discrimination to freedom. On the other hand, it is a boiling water, trying to clutch every story arc without thinking twice. Let me state how: -

It tries to add every political and social idealogy in one movie to showcase everyday life. However, by doing this, it overstuffs the already overstuffed story. First, we already the main story: Will Smith and Nick's investigation, Kandomere's suspicion, some weird-ass Asian girl who is part of a "Dark Lord". I am just concerned that they spoiled the movie by putting all the stuff in a 2-hour movie, which is almost impossible, as demonstrated by The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man 3, etc. Then there were some shots showing how orcs are treated in everyday life with rap music playing in background. Now that was a very bad move! I mean what were they trying to be. I was also dissapointed on the perceived lack of action sequences, as even if they were there, they are just very soulless as if it's budget was like Mad Max 1(which wasn't. $90–106.2 million is less!?!?!)

Nonetheless, Will Smith is always a lousy douchebag who only cares about his family. David Ayer has yet again proved to be a better fashion designer than director as the make-up and costumes are top-notch. the world itself is very awe-strucking to look at, if not that much original.

I got drawn in by the premise, modern fantasy were there is no masquerade? It sounded like a lot of fun, and reminded me of Shadowrun in some ways.

Watching the movie itself, however, it had kind of a slow start. The way it handled Orcs, the police and all that jazz was done in a pretty heavy handed way and obviously supposed to reflect how it's going over in the US. Once stuff like the Inferni and Wands got involved and we moved away a bit from the social commentary it started getting better.

That being said, the story was still fairly clichéd. McGuffin that the bad guys are after that the good guys need to protect that only certain people can use, though in the end our hero proves to be some chosen one. The action itself was still fairly decent, the characters varried. I really love Joel Edgerton's performance as Nick Jakoby. A lot of other actors just seemed to ham it up, especially the other cops. Who were behaving almost cartoonishly d*ckish at some point.

Overall, I'd have liked a bit more info on the world around and the history. Most of what we get is "there was a Dark Lord 2000 years ago, the Orcs sided with him and that's why we hate those guys" with a few other small snippets thrown in. I mean, I'm sure I would have complained if we got a plot dump too.

Anyway, I'm rambling. It was a decent movie overall. I'm glad they tried it, even if it wasn't the greatest. And if it ever gets a sequel, I might give it a chance.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This was done better in Alien NAtion which is pretty Jurassic at this point. Character are just underdeveloped and boring. No clever world building, other cops r just painted as one-dimensional bigots. I cant believe this cost $90mil. Did Will Smith take more than half the budget? Its feels like a cheap TV movie. Expand

"Bright" is uneven in terms of social commentary. However, in terms of its premise, world building, as well as sheer entertainment, it shines.
