It’s not the apocalyptic piece of trash Twitter has led you to believe critics painted it as, but it’s pretty ugly-looking and dimly lit. Passable enough entertainment, but Will Smith deserves better.

The premise is really cool and I can't fault the pace. But the acting was just ok to bad and the plot was lacking in captivating your mind. Also Will Smith and his partner just didn't have that enjoyable of a chemistry and since that was the bulk of the movie, it made me want to tune out. The orc actor just didn't have it or the director messed him up. I applaud Netflix's step into fantasy but if you want GOTG banter, you need to step it up. Better to not even have funny banter if it comes off bad. Expand

A great buddy buddy cop movie but with fantasy elements familiar to any genre fans. Lethal Weapon meets Lord of the Rings and it works beautifully.

The thing is that paid movie critics , along with people in lockstep with today's autocratic/liberal society, will equally hate such a movie because it show everything and everyone is in shadow, and there are no absolute good's. They media will also hate this movie because it is the first movie with a lead star, given a great budget and distributed to people's homes instead of movie distributors and their cabal of limited screenings and advertisement. I wish more movies had a reach like this. Expand

However, the universe is great and the relation between all races is very interesting. It would be great to see that universe once again but in a serie that would develop it further. Also, Joel Edgerton's character is very likeable. Expand

I'm also good with suspension of disbelief and have no problems letting go of normal world restrictions when watching something like this. Waiting for second installment. Wouldn't mind a series either.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Don't read the "professional" critic reviews. These are the same people who sacrificed their first born children to the glory of "The Last Jedi". They want everything to fit into their little academic box where they want to see everything as a social commentary. "Bright" is not. Or if it is, it's one where they just don't agree with the message.

For starters, you aren't supposed to like the main character, Ward, played by Will Smith. This is established early on in the movie where he asks for a new partner who isn't an orc (named Nick Jakobi) and is told point blank that the one no one likes isn't Nick... it's Ward. And it's probably the reason Jakobi got stuck with him in the first place (one hated for his race, the other for his attitude). And it's easy to see why. Ward is abrasive to his coworkers, snarky to his superiors, and bordering verbally abusive to Nick. The only positive relationships shown is to his family, including his daughter, who he's trying to raise to be better than him. So, at least he knows how much of a total dick he is.

Nick is the total opposite. Nick is bright eyed, optimistic, and incredibly polite to almost everyone, even Ward. He wants to improve the image of Orcs by becoming a cop, a choice that has made him a pariah to his own people. He's faced with hardship after hardship, making you want for him to succeed.

Now the story. Very basic, but all the better for it. None of the character decisions are informed solely by grabbing either the villain ball or stupid ball. Only have 1 person to send after a target in a fortified safehouse? Give her a MicroNuke (magic wand). All you coworkers want to steal the MicroNuke to sell on the black market and tell you to kill your partner in order to pin the blame on him? Kill the coworkers and go on the run, turning yourself into a friend in another department who at the least is willing to hear you out. Extremist assassins kill your friend and you are on the run again? Turn yourself into the FBI's MicroNuke team. Want to advance the status of your people, or just want to heal a disability? Take the MicroNuke. Also, the threat level rises through the story like it should, with the heroes facing first gangbangers, then an Orc gang, and finally said extremist assassins.

If you want world building, then you WILL be disappointed in this story. That's not necessarily a bad thing, it's just the result of a limitation in the medium. There's some interesting things you can pick up if you pay attention, but it sacrificed it in order to tell the story. Personally, I don't mind. If it's good, I'll read the expanded universe if it comes out (I'm looking at you, JRR Tolkien).

For you social commentary nerds, it DOES have some of that, but it takes back seat to the story, like it should, IMO. You have to pay attention. Aside from the obvious anti-racism message, there's some interesting commentary on the militarization of Police and the effects it can have in perpetuating the cycle of distrust between the cops and residents of the slums, along with a message about relegating a certain group to different jobs (all of the cops save Jakobi are humans, Orcs seem to have a big presence in the military, and Elves seem to be exclusively white-collar) and how pigeon-holing just leads to resentment and clannishness.

It's a great movie, and the only things I can find wrong with it is the lighting, and how often half their faces are obscured in shadows, and how some of the dialogue is very awkward at times. But hell, I've seen movies with amazing dialogue and cinematography but utterly atrocious story that they sacrificed for some gaudy message or world building.

When Will Smith does his "Will Smith" it's not at all funny, and there's not enough back story presented to help me connect to the characters. I thought everyone was just 'okay' and I didn't care if certain people lived or died because I didn't know enough about them to care one way or another. It also seemed preachy to me, as though they were trying to teach me something. Joel Edgerton did so well in Midnight Special that I was looking forward to seeing him in this but the director didn't get anything out of him. What a complete waste of talent. The good moments were all the fight scenes. Noomi Rapace is great as Leilah and her fight sequences are outstanding. In all I'd say that giving it 5 out of 10 is pretty generous. Expand

Here is my potential movie universe right here, forget supper hero's. I don't care if its a mini series or a book, just something. Its a lot like a great video game that ends on a cliff hanger, it shows you just enough of the world for you to be obsessed with its inhabitance and how the world functions, that you just have to have more!! Not that it can't stand allows without more. I just wan't more. You can't have a Centaur as a mounted police man (a centaur who is a police officer) or a dragon flying in a night sky shot and expect me to not lose my mind over those concepts. The ideas that are shown in the move are so delicious they could go in so many directions. Flawed, but brilliantly bright :P Expand

For me, the main basis of a good movie, is that it's entertaining, however, a great movie is more than that. Bright falls into the good category. That being said, the story mostly follows the cookie cutter big budget narrative. There were some twists, namely two "big " ones, that were very clearly going to play out the way they did. There were also a handful of instances where I was yelling at the screen because the characters either did, or failed to do, insanely stupid things. Nearly all movies are guilty of this to some degree, but bright would receive multiple concurrent life sentences if this was a punishable crime. However, these fairly glaring flaws would bring my score down much farther on an overall less entertaining film. I had a surprisingly good time watching it, and will recommend others give it a chance. Bright is far from perfect, but undoubtedly better than the critic score conveys. Expand

I really dont understand why the critics bashed it so hard. Some people think the movie got heavy handed with SJW issues, but I honestly felt it was just great world building - not necessarily a social commentary on the way our world currently is.

As a person who loves fantasy movies, as well as buddy cop films, this really just hit the nail on the head in all the right places. It was a really unique and fresh idea mixing fantasy with modern gritty/urban environments. I highly recommend watching it if you're into the same stuff I am. You wont regret it.

While many critics were too harsh on this film, I agree to some extent with the critiques on the bland scene framing and script writing. I also did not like the fast-paced sentimentality that tried too hard to appeal to pathos (no spoilers, ski-cap). Despite the mediocre aspects of the movie, I enjoyed watching it for fun. I wouldn't agree with my brother that this is one of the best movies of the year, but it doesn't deserve a zero. User sterge10 on metacritic commented that the movie, "meld Will Smith's other buddy cop movies Bad Boys with Dungeons & Dragons." I think totally agree with him. This is one of the film's mighty orcish strengths, it's urban-fantasy uniqueness that people tend to find in comics, cartoons, video games, and tabletop roleplaying games. I'm glad such a genre is finding its way to, errrr, digital cinema through this movie. This unique, overly decent, and fun film should definitely have scored higher with the critics. Expand

The critic reviews are obviously being influenced, because Netflix did a great job with this production. Not only is it a mash-up of modern/fantasy which is awesome for people like me who were raised playing RPG games and reading lord of the rings books, but it includes a decent cast and very cool concepts of how a world like this should be. This movie has set up a universe of possibilities in sequels, they can literally create a movie experience that will propel this intellectual property to the popularity level of a Peter Jackson movie if they handle it properly.

The movie only falls short in my opinion because you have to wait for the sequel for the main protagonist's story to actually begin. This movie is more of an introduction to the universe and an opening for Will Smith's character in the next movie.

Therefore, I’m also pretty sure he’ll have heard of Alien Nation, a movie about a cop who’s teamed up with a recently arrived alien as a partner. The difference between that film and this one – Alien Nation was quite good.

Everything you’ve heard about Bright is true – it’s terrible. Even on paper the concept looks daft, but once up on the screen it’s ten times worse. Will Smith plays Will Smith playing Captain Steven Hiller (Independence Day) or Det. Del Spooner (I, Robot), that’s to say the same character he always plays. It’s like he’s turning into an alternate Tom Cruise. There are Orcs and Fairies and swords and LA ‘gangstas’ and so much ridiculousness that if I tell you anymore about it you’ll think I’m on a crack binge.

Netflix give good TV, but their movies stink, and this is the stinkiest so far. Maybe if you fancy a bit of hate-watching, this is the film for you. Or you’re studying film and you want to see how not to do it, this is the film for you. Otherwise, definitely don’t.

Bright is an incredibly bold, original piece of filmmaking that blends elements from neo-noir, ultra-violence, high-fantasy, cop drama, and suspense-thriller into it's own, completely unique style. The film even got a few chuckles out of me! At times, Bright feels a little bloated, some scenes are a little hokey, and a few plot elements never go anywhere, but these are nicely balanced out by some great action choreography, beautiful cinematography, and some really nice acting from our three leads. If you are looking for a fresh action film, give Bright a watch. Expand

It's foul mouthed and violent.. things I don't like a whole lot - but it's a great cop short story in a big fantasy world, complete with some humor and social commentary. Reminded me of all the things I like about Discworld novels. It certainly captures some of the feel of "The Night Watch" thread of novels by the late Terry Pratchett though certainly a little more serious, and perhaps less clever (don't want to offend any Terry Pratchett fans - but I am one, and I really enjoyed this). This definitely feels ambitious - in that there aren't many other movies out there that splash into a setting like this. The story isn't super special - it's a typical cops on the run story, but the attention to detail in the setting, the history of the world that's only hinted at - a cultural backdrop that is new but still familiar. The Last Witch Hunter attempted a grand setting like this - but this was much much better. Expand

Imagine my shock of glee when they combined these elements! The story is very engaging, lots of fantasy elements combined with gritty real life situations. The movie wasn't written to win an Oscar, but seeing what trash is winning the Oscars as of late, this movie is deviates from that formula, which is refreshing! Only complaint: it does have a lavish use of the F word, which I don't find offensive but can off put those who are really into the fantasy aspect side only, plus it just plain looks like bad dialogue writing. But that is a minor issue, I'm really hoping it spins off into a sequel or even better, a Netflix series! Expand

Perhaps my palette is not sophisticated enough as an average joe. The story is ambitious, the movie is well-edited around a gigantic plot surrounding modern day elves, dwarves, humans, and orcs, and I enjoyed the Jakoby Orc police officer's performance thoroughly. He shared the screen with Will Smith who is a consummate actor and he rose to the occasion. Good use of occasional SFX that complemented the movie. I would definitely watch Bright 2. Whoever says this is an important movie due to it's obvious message on racism, needs to shut up. The film literally treats itself as ground breaking and a brave look on today society.

'Alien Nation' did it better.

Why does this movie look so ugly? It's got the same color filter as 'Suicide Squad', which is another David Ayer movie. And also 'Son of Saul', a holocaust film. So your telling me this and 'Suicide Squad' has the same color filter of a holocaust movie. Before you say anything, no it doesn't add to the experience, just makes it more dull to watch.

I'll just come out and say it - I've never liked Max Landis. I don't know the guy personally, but he always comes across as arrogant and self-centred. Any movie Landis was involved in, I usually don't like. 'Chronicle' wasn't too bad, but that was just one movie. I'm not trying to hate on him for the shake of hating, he just hasn't done anything to change my mind. He's not a very good writer. Every line of dialogue is this movie was absolutely awful that maybe re-writes isn't so bad for Landis.

Will Smith is a great actor, but isn't great of picking movie roles. I mean, he turned down 'The Matrix' and 'Django Unchained', to instead star in 'After Earth' and 'Collateral Beauty'. I hope Smith makes a come back. To be fair, even with the terrible or Oscar bait movies, I can't say he's bad in them. Same thing can be said about Joel Edgerton.

Overall rating: "It was made for the FANS, NOT the CRITICS!”

The intermixing of fantasy and modern/future themes was refreshing and new. Adding this to the old and tired buddy cop trope gave it a breath of fresh air. Here's to hoping that Netflix continues to develop this world with further movies and serials.

On a side note, it seems that critics do not reflect what audiences want. Looking at the large divide between the audience and critic ratings of this movie and that of the most recent Star Wars release makes one wonder how relevant critics actually are. It also makes you wonder if many professional critics are paid by the movie industry to produce these reviews. Perhaps the industry is afraid of the nontraditional manner that new content appears on Netflix. With many households having high definition screens, surround sound systems, and streaming capable internet, there is little reason to frequent cinemas when a similar, yet less-expensive experience can be had at home.

The critics seem perhaps not to have quite understood the fact that the allegories of this movie aren't quite as shallow they would appear at face value. But that's critics for you.

Bright is a good movie. Sure, there's a lot of exposition, some really eye-rolling overdone set pieces, and more than a few corny moments. But unlike most modern action movies, it has something to say, it says it with surprisingly restrained pacing, the dialogue is mostly engaging, and it's exciting.

And sure, it utilizes all of the typical fantasy tropes, from the macguffin to the chosen one, but it feels like the writers knew that, and that was half the point.

One thing I really liked was the choice to cast a black man in the roll of somebody on the perpetrating end of racism, while conversely casting the orks as the ones who historically did something wrong and the humans as the ones who wouldn't forgive them for it.

I'm ready for Bright 2, or even better, Bright the TV show.

It explains all the simple facts about the world through narrative that isn't overly forced. It reminds me a lot of a good game story. It doesn't require you to spend time to pick things up, it puts them in front of you as things go on and expects you to understand without spelling it out for you. If this movie spent an hour extra with some kind of recap of how the world came to be, this would have been tedious. It's there to give you a glimpse, but to not waste your time. Sure they want to make more of these, no doubt, but they don't spill all the details on the first date. It shows you a good time, and tries it's best to be decent and hopes you are willing to ask for more.

Considering I watched this movie at home, for no extra money then what I am already paying, more of this please. Don't let these terrible critics dishearten your efforts. I'll be telling anyone I know that this is a decent movie and worth the price of a month of netflix, even if they have already binged and watched everything else you have to offer them :)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It starts off as a "What happens if you mashup "Lord of the Rings" with "Alien Nation" and "Shadowrun" together," interestingly enough, then it devolves into a terrible chase, fantasy/horror movie, with a “chosen one” narrative, and a MacGuffin that everyone wants, in this case, its literally a magic wand, with Ayers literally copying and pasting scenes from all of his previous movies such as "Training Day," "End of Watch," and "Suicide Squad" into this one. Will Smith phones it in by copying and pasting his Deadshot character from "Suicide Squad." Noomi Rapace is criminally underused and wasted as her character and henchmen look like and act like like vampires from the Blade or Underworld series more than elves, as Joel Edgerton is the only acting that stands out as the honest and earnest, first of his kind, Orc cop, who braves a dignified face in the midst of all of the abuse and discrimination. Speaking of which, the way it addresses racial and discrimination is done in the most superficial and stupid way. The social hierarchy and discrimination is never adequately explained or built on, as none of it makes sense. For example, the Orcs are associated with hip-hop and gang culture and clearly coded to be the movie’s African Americans and Hispanics, but then they actually DO include hip-hoping and gangbanging Blacks and Latinos. This would've been better as a TV series than a movie, as a 10-12 episode season would've better built up the world and its characters which they fail to adequately do here, but then again, why would they do that? After all, this was all an experiment to announce to the world that Netflix can do big budget, special effects driven, dreck, with expensive, A-List performers that can attract subscribers and internet fanboys and trolls spamming up the review sites with fake accounts and reviews like you see here on Metacritic and attacking anyone who disagrees with their awful opinions. For the sequel they already green-lit, they need to do a better job with setting up this fantasy world and its characters, or this could be a colossal and very expensive backfire for Netflix, while the big corporate studios continue to laugh as they take more and more of their content away from Netflix to their own streaming services. Those familiar with the tabletop RPG "shadowrun" may find similar veins to this in its tone. Though, given it's meant to be contemporary urban fantasy it eschews the cyberpunk and dystopian aesthetics of that namesake. Overall, the film has a lot going for it, even with the utter lambasting critics are giving this film. It doesn't diminish that the film has good chemistry between Nick Jakoby (The United States first orcish officer) and Daryl Ward (A cop looking to survive the 'diversity hire'). All the acting is spot on, and fits their roles well. And the action does not disappoint both in its variety and visceral qualities.

If I had to give this film any negatives its that it is a bit bog standard cop drama film. Even with the magical elements. As I said earlier the film seems like it fails to fully capitalize on its interesting setting and more world building could be done in a 'sidequel' with another film set in the same universe (or perhaps a netflix series if they thought to do one). I recommend giving this film a shot. Don't go in with expectations of a highbrow or intellectual film. Think training day with orcs, elves, and some magic.

The pacing was a little weird in a few places and there were some awkward jokes thrown into places where they didn't belong, but overall this was an interesting and well done thriller. They don't spend overly long trying to explain the concept of the world to us, which is nice. They give the audience credit to just kinda roll with the setting and overall ends up giving us a pretty realistic depiction of a world with magic and rolling into a simple, yet believable story. I have a good feeling that most of the critics didn't even watch the movie and likely just read the synopsis and just made assumptions. Hopefully Netflix realizes that it shouldn't pay attention to them because this movie is a good setup for some really awesome future stories. I am looking forward to the next of these movies. There's a lot of cool potential here. Expand

I am glad that Netflix has ordered another Bright movie and I can't wait to watch it. Expand

Created an account just to rate this movie. Very enjoyable, everything was absolutely well done. Plot, direction, acting -- all on point. A great movie, and I don't understand why the critics are panning this one. Here's hoping for Bright 2.

BRIGHT is full of spectacle, it has a great premise, some witty one-liners, and it's loaded with cool images.

It also has some of the worst plot holes, characterization, pacing, dialogue, and worldbuilding in history. In terms of storytelling, this is clearly one of the worst movies of all time. Even those one-liners are often out of character. The film beats you over the head moralizing about race and racism, but the filmmakers don't seem to have spent much time thinking about race or racism.

This is why there's going to be a discrepancy between critics and some casual viewers: critics tend to care about film as a storytelling medium, and BRIGHT has some of the worst storytelling in the history of film. But a viewer who only wants to vege out in front of the tv while watching some cool special effects and images, and chuckle over good-but-formulaic buddy-cop banter, will like it just fine.

Storytelling matters to me, personally, so I didn't enjoy it.

Bright addresses some of the social awkwardness and problems of our society and brings some raw emotion and grit along with it's world building. Step inside for sheer entertainment and spectacle you will be rewarded come in expecting a philosophical story arc you will rip it apart the moment the film begins. Ayer seems to still be feeling out his identity in storytelling but this is a strong statement for Ayer who isn't afraid to still take risks after a lack luster suicide squad performance. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I watched Bright thinking it would be an masterpiece, however i was wrong. The Universe created would really make a good series, but instead, they released this movie, which could have been much better if just a cop movie in a different universe.

The movie is good until they introduce the main plot point, which is magic.

The magic in this movie is extremely dull, and introduced in the movie too late.

The villians say they will "revive The Dark Lord", but the villians (who are extremely dull and boring) never do so.

This is just my opinion, and what i thought about the movie when i watched it.
