Bright is a well executed present day "Shadowrun" setting. They do a great job with the races and environment and deliver a very entertaining film. It's not trying to be lofty or deal with ideals, it's just giving you the story. The only disappointment here is that this was developed as a movie and not a longer standing series. There is much potential for spin-offs. Expand

The film was entertaining and I suspect the film packed so much content and ideas into its 2 hour run length because they intend to make another film and possibly a TV show. When I first saw the preview for the film I thought Bright was going to be a TV series because it is extremely difficult to create a complicated world with competing political factions in just 2 hours while simultaneously making the film suspenseful and action packed. Bright did a great job and I believe the film will speak to audiences even if critics think poorly of Bright. These are the same critics who give great ratings to movies that have led to Hollywood's worst ticket sales in 25 years. My suggestion is to ignore the critics. Watch the movie and judge it yourself. As for the professional critics, I think they've been bribed by competitors of netflix to give bad reviews. I don't understand how there could be any other explanation as to why its so negative.

I found Bright surprisingly entertaining. A bit too much foul language for me, but otherwise interesting story line. We watched as a family and we all thought it was LOTR set in modern days. I was interested in the characters. It was action packed and I caught only one hole in the plot. Far better than Last Jedi where you could not avoid all the endless plot holes. I will now watch movies the critics don't like! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I try to pick movies to watch based on reviews of both critics and normal viewers. I was looking up this movie and it had a score of 28 from critics and 75 from viewers. SO I think I give it a chance to see the discrepancy I must say, THANK GOD, I decided to watch this movie. A good way to describe the setting of this movie is Lord of the Rings meets District 9. This is a "modern" world that has Elves, Humans, and Orcs. The Elves are the high class race, living in expensive part of the city called Elfcity. The humans seem to be the butlers of the world. The Orcs live in many different communities. They believe in clan rules and law. They considered the lowest class (among the 3) because of their transgression 2,000 years ago. There are other classes like Dragon which we see very briefly. We see small fairies which are considered rodents. Now, the movie centers around a human cop called Ward and his Orc partner Jakoby. They run into a elf who has a wand. A wand is magical and able to cast abilities by those who can wield it (called Brights). The movie does a great job building the world, characters, and setting. You can definitely feel like a sequel will be made and it would be great. I give this movie a 7.5/10 Expand

I felt like I was not being told anything in the story because there would the 12 more episodes to fill me in about how this world worked. Yet that is not the case this is the whole stand-a-lone movie. I have no idea what the prophecy was or what would even be gained by fulfilling the prophecy, or what the prophecy needed in ordered to be fulfilled. Why are elves rich? They hint it is because of the wands but again no real answer. Like a TV pilot it was just a lot of open ends that if you don't think about why the world worked like it did it was a good movie. If you have Netflix subscription, please give it a try and watch it - it will not cost you anything apart from your time. I really loved the first half of the movie, the second one was somewhat weaker for me, but still ok. So if you hate it after first 30 minutes it is probably not for you.
BTW I give it 9/10 to counter-balance negative “critics” reviews - if professionals don’t have to be objective, why should I after all :-). If I were objective I would still give it something around 7-8 though...

Food for thought. What a coincidence that a distinctly average blockbuster movie releasing directly on an easily accessible consumer platform, where critic reviews aren't really relevant because anyone can turn it off after 15 minutes if they don't like it with no loss of money, is getting absolutely destroyed by mainstream media. Just saying. Meanwhile, a distinctly average and seriously unimpressive Hollywood big name franchise release is getting praised as the new definition of storytelling. Just saying.

Politics aside, and make no mistake, the critic reviews for this movie are mostly politics, Bright is a decent movie that manages to be entertaining. Is it Oscar material? Hell no. It's a competent movie, with high budget effects that at least for me managed to stay enjoyable from start to finish. It did not pretend to be smarter than it looks, and there are definitely things to criticize here, but under no circumstances does this movie deserve the bashing it is getting from critics. I find the incredibly transparent politics and hypocrisy from some "big name" reviewers to be absolutely disgusting.

While the world is vast and leaves some questions unanswered, that by no means makes the movie hard to follow or less enjoyable to watch. The action was fantastic, the characters were portrayed very well, and the humor was spread throughout to break the tension. I could see how much older viewers who aren't accustomed to a fantasy setting might have a hard time to follow, but if you're like me and prefer the fantasy genre you will most likely enjoy watching this movie. But there's enough fantastical craziness packed in to at least warrant a look. It doesn't do the best job of world building, and some plot lines might fall a bit flat or incoherent; complete suspension of disbelief is practically required for this movie. Will Smith is back...doing Will Smith, like he does...all the time, never changing. Joel Edgerton does a decent job of playing an Orc, and is definitely the better of the two characters. Plot-wise, this film is more or less a hybrid of "End of Watch" meets "Street Kings". Only one of those movies was any good, so make of that what you will. Overall, I did not dislike this film and I am curious to see what the sequel will bring, but as of right now, it's just another "okay" or "meh" David Ayer film. I watched this movie wiht no expectations. And what i found was, an ok movie. Don't get me wrong. It's not an extraordinary movie, but it is not that bad as some critics are saying. It's a good mix between two genres, a story of a fantastic world with real life issues. It could be better? This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don't know what the critics were expecting out of Bright. I saw it with no particular expectation and I had a lot of fun watching it. It's an action flick setup in the future with fantasy elements. This film serve as an introduction to a world with many races, which remind me A LOT about Defiance TV show. The story is interesting as it brings a lot of lore into the table. Maybe the acting is not perfect but it serves the plot perfectly. I like the wand stuff, as it is compared to a nuclear weapon. I like the racist side of the story with the Orcs and even the Elves...and all the tribulations that goes with it. The Fx are pretty good...Maybe the point where the movie fails is the motivation of the FBI of magic in all this. It's never really clear on which side they stand. They announced a follow up and I hope it will be even better. I give it a 75%. Very entertaining and not deserving the critics unfair ranting. Expand

The film had some very interesting elements involving the backstory and the lore that was unfortunately never expanded upon, but nevertheless, the story progression was decent and the main enjoyment I got from the film was watching the character arcs of Will Smith and Joel Edgerton's characters. As you go through the film it's very interesting to see how the different races interact with each other in an obvious but fairly accurate portrayal of modern society. At the end of the day, Bright is part of your Netflix subscription so there isn't really a reason to not watch it. I would say definitely give it a go, but don't expect anything special. Expand

But take a popcorn, put on a Netflix and watch this with your SO as your night movie and you gonna have some decent fun and you will see something weird and new. The movie never blew me out of the chair, but I didnt feel bored either. Above average with 7 is something that is fine for this movie.

So, again, why did "professional" critics decide that this is the movie they must review to hell? Is it because its Netflix special? Would the reviews be different if it was in movies instead? I dont know, but sure looks like it.

NOTE: There is already a sequel in the works!!!

Onto my thoughts... This should prove to ALL that critics are paid. You have a disaster of a movie called, "Star Wars, The Last Jedi" (My heart still is broken with disappointment), that gets praise from professional critics, but to the consumer, it's a disaster. Then comes along "Bright." Critics immediately tear it apart, while consumers praise it. Movies/studios that are tied to box office money are able to pay critics to give praise. It's in the best interest of professional critics to tear down major movies like "Bright" that are "free" on Netflix, in hopes that the trend doesn't continue and gain steam. The professional critic needs movies to go through the traditional theater process so that the studios can "float" them some cash to write good reviews.
"Bright," while it has it's flaws, is a great movie. I'm SO happy to see that they are already signed up for a SEQUEL! I hope they go deeper into the lore and reduce the number of F-bombs. I think this movie has more "F" words than 90% of the movies out there, which is unnecessary. Other than that, the concept is great. I love the humor and the potential for the future is enormous.
As with any movie, don't read the professional critic reviews. Stick with consumer reviews. What's more entertaining? A modern day fantasy, Lethal Weapon... Or an old Princess Leia having a "Superman" moment in space within a movie that has a plot line we have seen already in "The Empire Strikes Back?" At least "Bright" is new a fresh.

All I know is that Bright is a really cool, highly original take on two different genres. By mixing up the Fantasy and Buddy-cop cliches they came up with something altogether different and highly entertaining. With originality and a far more interesting world than the redone Star Wars there is at least one movie to give you some decent holiday escapism. The only weak-point is Ayre's directing (far too much blue lighting and shadows) but the writing, acting and action all gel well. Here's hoping for a franchise or having this set up a ShadowRun movie. Marks another solid piece of evidence why sites like RT and Metacritic need to start billing User Score first. Expand

-I cannot understand the low ratings of "professional" critics. I can see why it dislike to some, but so low score?
I can only think of one problem. The movie was delibered by a internet movie provider instead of being released at cinema. I think that may hurt some people, and, might this model of audivsual bussiness become usual, may cause lost of tons of cash to certain sectors of audivisual industry. May I be wrong, but right now the only reason for pro-crits being so low seems purely "political" (related to bussiness) to me.

As for the movie:

-Succesfully manages to mix modern day world with magic and fantasy. Well packed action. The movie introduces you to a whole new, solid alternative world with just sidelines and few scenes, without burdening the spectator wich "alternate history classes". It really gives the feeling that the world and background is much more developed than you see on the movie, and really feel like being a starting point to a franchise, maybe a whole TV (Netflix) series. It has the potential to become a whole new fictional universe to develop all kind of stuff, somehow like Star Wars or Lord of the Rings universe. Time will tell.

It probably sounded good (or at least interesting) on paper, but it plays out as an awkward, uneven mess; it often feels more like an ill-conceived SNL sketch than a fully developed movie that has something revelatory to say about the current state of race relations in America.

The Will Smith and Joel Edgerton vehicle is a genre hybrid that could be summed up as Training Day meets Lord of the Rings. The movie is set in a version of modern-day Los Angeles where humans, orc, elves, and other species interact with one another as part of their daily routine, but they occupy different “districts” or neighborhoods. bright movieThe past incursions/wars they all have been involved with–we’re talking thousands of years prior–have led to bouts of blatant discrimination and segregation. The Los Angeles Police Department is aware of the need for change, though, and has taken up a mandate that has the world’s first orc police officer, Nick Jakoby (Egerton), to be partnered with a human, Daryl Ward (Smith). An early moment of action finds the duo on the outs and having to sort through an issue that permeates the remainder of the film; Ward is shot by an orc, and it is believed that Jakoby lets the offender get away because of the “clan law” that dictates orc culture. The world-building in Bright that leads to these kinds of rules is more than a little vague; as viewers, we’re given tidbits here and there about how the various cultures in this universe interact with one another, but it’s like being presented with a puzzle that’s missing 50% of the pieces. We’re just supposed to accept at face value that all of these species don’t get along and the situation likely won’t ever change. Again, the movie is really trying to work toward some semblance of subtext or a contemporary revelation, but we aren’t given enough backstory to really understand what has caused things to become so awful.

Given the presence of orcs and elves, it should come as little surprise that magic is a real thing in this universe. The MacGuffin here is a wand that is said to grant its operator anything he or she desires: destruction, riches, so on and so forth. Only a “Bright” can successfully wield a wand; if a non-Bright touches a wand, they are summarily incinerated. Long story short: crooked cops want the wand, because, well, money; Ward is going to stop these crooked cops with the help of Jakoby, but they soon realize there are also insidious elves on the hunt for the magical device because, well, reasons. The very premise of the movie requires some monumental suspension of disbelief, which is fine, but nothing is fleshed out in any clear way; the whole effort ends up feeling like a wasted experiment. Those familiar with the aforementioned Training Day will discover, too, that an important narrative moment is directly lifted from that film. This was an overwhelming distraction for me–any originality the movie seemed to initially possess dissolved when I recalled where I’d seen things play out in a similar way in an earlier movie (in hindsight, this shouldn’t be surprising considering David Ayer’s involvement with both films). One other note: there is a moment where a gang of orcs encounters Ward and Jakoby early in the story. We’re supposed to take it seriously, but seeing magical creatures dressed in contemporary clothing and acting tough ended up resulting–at least for me–in a bout of unintentional hilarity. This is an example of the kinds of problems that the movie is never really able to shake; it’s all so absurd and borderline comical that it’s hard to buy into anything.

Though there was a lot of potential here, Bright ends up being a poorly conceived genre mashup that falters under the weight of its missteps. The narrative self-plagiarism is a problem, too. For a buddy cop movie about a human and an orc trying to stop an elf with a magic wand, it just isn’t very original.

Great premise bad execution. Will Smith is amazing as usual but that's not enough to save this movie. Lets not give bad movies a pass just because of their good premise.

Couldn't help but feel that it could have benefited from being slightly longer to flesh out the alternative universe Earth rather than just expecting the audience to believe that this alternate reality is "how it's always been". Or, better yet, maybe developed as a limited-run episodic series like Netflix's Godless. Elves and the Magic Feds both got short shrift, they're kinda.. just there. Still, both my wife and I enjoyed it as a mindless popcorn sci-fi flick. Expand

The pacing and tone was on par with End Of Watch- I would have liked to have seen the Dragon come more into play, the portrayal of fairies as pests servedseems like a huge waste of potential, the dialogue was a bit dull and the villain character developement was weak, as well the usual buddy cop situations didn't feel earned. All that said I did enjoy it, I think the concept was well developed though the script and characters developement, as well as fully utilizing the more interesting aspects of the movie's universe could have been stronger.
