Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, in their 4th collaboration, have made a
good, winning film in “Bridge of Spies”. Sort of a nod to a Frank Capra/James Stewart movie with humor, in a serious situation, and Hanks being the All American Everyman. This Cold War spy story based on a true story of an exchange between an American pilot, Francis Gary Powers played by Austin Stowell shot down and accused of being a spy and Rudolf Abel, a communist spy, played by Mark Rylance, who is caught in New York.

Hanks is a family man with a dutiful wife, played by Amy Ryan, a son and two daughters, and a successful insurance lawyer. He has a deep and abiding belief in the United States constitution for all, including arrested spies.

This took place in the late 1950s, early 1960s, while the wall was being built between east and west Germany and many of my generation remember the newspaper headlines about the pilot Powers being shot down but there are not many who
remember the lawyer James Donovan, Rudolf Abel or an American Yale student Frederic Pryor, played by Will Rogers, who was another part of the equation. Whether you know the story, the history or what liberties Spielberg and the screenwriters Matt Charman, Ethan and Joel Coen, take it becomes a taunt thriller that will have you hanging on to every word and action.

The acting, from Hanks, Rogers, Stowell, Ryan along with Alan Alda, Dakin Matthews, Scott Shepherd, Sebastian Koch, Domenick Lombardozzi and others, is strong but it is Mark Rylance as the Russian spy who dominates every scene he is in with a quiet, subtle performance that will win many people to his side.

Spielberg does the fine job that is expected of him but this film cries out to have been filmed in black and white and the scene of the airplane crash just doesn’t ring true. At two hours and 15 minutes the movie could have been shorter if it ended on the bridge of spies but stay for the credits to find out what happened to the people involved as it will bring you some surprises, especially regarding Donovan and Powers or at least it did for me.

The production values are top notch as is expected from any film Spielberg and Hanks are involved in.

What we have with 'Bridge of Spies' is a tremendous Cold War tale with well drawn characters and a compelling story. However, in my opinion, as enjoyable as the final product may be the film does not live up to the names that are attached. Based on those completely unfair parameters, 'Bridge of Spies' feels like a slightly missed opportunity, while still being a great time at the theater. Expand

I was left confused because I went to see (As name suggests) a movie full of spies. But it started with a rather legal drama flavour and proceeded to the second half as thriller and ended with .. Well I don't know what to call the ending. I was so confused about what is going on in James Donovan's mind or what is his code of conduct which is making him make odd choices. That part is for writer. Now what I missed the most was John Williams, a movie like this could have worked a lot better with a progressive score to compliment it's pace but Thomas Newman's work is highly mediocre.
On the bright side, Tom Hanks was very good with the performance. His best since Charlie Wilson's War (resemblance between both characters as negotiators and involvement of Russia). Costumes, Editing and Sets were worth praising too.
Biggest thumb down towards Mr. Speilberg for using very old tactics of basing the humour between two key characters, in this case James Danavon and Rudolf Abel (both contender for Oscar), did not work. Same joke too many times. And movie also lacked intensity. There was not a single moment we felt that James' plan would not fall through.
Overall, movie is watch-able for it's not mater much departments, which makes it not much enjoyable.

Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks prove themselves to be a productive team in terms of cinematic quality. The sharp script, cast, and directing are all commendable. But what really hit it out of the ball park, was Mark Rylance, who plays the spy with astonishing realism, as Rudolf Abel. It strikes me perhaps the most, and I can't stress enough how well Spielberg pulls this off, is that we feel a touch of sympathy for the 'traitor.' The unexpected result is a reason why this film scores on every level. Expand

The film not only tells of the personal mission of Mr. Hanks’ character but, in addition, shows in great detail, the circumstances many of us can recall in the late 1050’s, the cold war that existed in those years and the tensions that could have easily accelerated and ignited a nuclear third world war.. I give the film an 8.0 and urge all who enjoy a good bio history drama to see it as soon as possible Expand

Adding The Coen Brothers brings pieces of their highly stylized view of film making into the production in service to the story, not the other way around as sometimes happens in Coen films. Yes, Tom Hanks holds this story together but Mark Rylance is fabulous as well in what should bring him a Best supporting Actor nomination. The dialogue is tight yet textured for the era. One visually stunning and intense scene involving a plane in particular left my mouth agape! Overall, despite becoming somewhat predictable towards the end, the rest of the film manages to hold up remarkably well due to the gripping story and acting, as well as Spielberg's confident direction. I'd say it's certainly one of his best films in recent memory! Expand

The film holds one's attention throughout (there was no inclination to peek at a watch to see when it will be over). Tom Hanks gives his usual workmanlike performance as James Donovan, the lawyer who becomes Rudolf Abel's lawyer, then is at the center of the negotiations to trade Abel for an American pilot. I thought Mark Rylance was outstanding as Abel. Definitely one of the better movies of 2015, thus far. Expand

Bridge Of Spies is a cold and intense movie that brings us close to the Cold War and how an American lawyer tried to help two hostages by trading him with a soviet spy. But much more than that, the script shows us how close Hanks and Rylance's characters get closer and respect each other's jobs and how much such likely USA and Russia can be regarding spies, even though they are near to start a dangerous war in the world because of their differences. We don't have a lot of depth on Donovan's personal life but the focus on his relationship with Abel is deep and moving, especially in the end. Fortunately, we don't have an over patriotic analysis on the fact, which makes the film easier to relate to and not annoying like previous films about American heroes. Well done, amazing performances by the two leading men! Expand

When a Russian spy is captured in Brooklyn, James Donovan (Tom Hanks) is hired to defend him. The case becomes more complicated when he's sent to Berlin to quietly negotiate the release of a captured American U-2 pilot. Unlike what you might expect from Hollywood, there's not one chase scene or shootout, only an intelligently-written narrative of human conflict and determined accomplishment. Steven Spielberg is in straight-ahead storytelling mode with little directorial flourish, but he makes every performance (esp. Hanks) persuasive and every moment compelling. Espionage for grown ups. Bond of men in the coldest of times.

Capturing the weight and gloom of an era, Bridge of Spies is equally a biopic and an unexpected light drama. There's a lingering intensity, especially concerning the world of secrecy, yet it's a fascinatingly accessible story with subtle refined humor. This is meant to inspire instead of evaluation of ideologies, showcasing that humanity still resides beyond the other side of border or wall.

Rudolf Abel (Mark Rylance) is an alleged Soviet spy, he's caught and set for a trial. For his defense James Donovan (Tom Hanks) is unceremoniously selected, mainly for the purpose of procedure. After a while Donovan becomes invested on defending his client despite the unusual circumstance, it then takes him on a journey to help CIA save their own agent.

Despite the rather shady title, this is not the flamboyant gunslinger action ala James Bond or the intense operation like Argo. It is, strangely and also effectively, a light foray into the otherwise dark world of espionage. The pace is utterly calm, credit goes to Mark Rylance as Abel, who occasionally shows the pettiness of worrying.

He and Tom Hanks have incredible chemistry, both of the characters practically have nothing in common aside from the mutual respect towards each other. Donovan himself is avid negotiator, he pushes his objective with verbal aggression, yet the movie almost never resorts to violence and even on few occasions that it does venture to bleak territory, it does so with sophistication.

Rather than using typical war buildup, the movie gives faces to each party, thus humanizing them in incredibly identifiable way. It also deals with the issues of the era head-on while maintaining composure and suspending judgment. Lastly, it offers a soft touch of comedy along the way. The unexpected banters lighten the mood with timely cynical quip, it doesn't undermine the theme and still gives polished interaction between the supposed stoic personalities.

Bridge of Spies is perhaps one of the most accessible depictions of a war. It might set in Cold War and showcase the grim reality of it, yet it never falters on presenting honor, duty and the best side of humanity in less than favorable time.

TomAs usual Spielberg’s films are visually extraordinary. This film capturing the weight and gloom of the 1950’s cold war era with the USSR, and almost succeeds in weaving 2 stories together into a prisoner exchange along a bridge in Berlin. Tom Hanks portrays an insurance lawyer (Donovan) assigned to defend a Russian spy (Abel) played superbly by Mark Rylance. Donovan finds out too late his client does not have a chance, and his client is convicted. There is no courtroom drama because Donovan’s best legal work was on appeal and that’s hard to make exciting. Ultimately, Able is traded in Berlin for Francis Gary Powers, the CIA U-2 pilot that was shot down and captured by Russia. It’s a film: there is neither action nor real suspense, but the story is told carefully and with grace such that it is captivating. Bridge of Spies gives the younger generation a window into the Cold War and honors a man who most Americans never knew and who performed several valuable roles on behalf of his country quietly, with integrity and great dignity. Like this film. Expand

My husband is disabled with MS and the prolonged sitting frequently causes spasms in his legs; he started to complain to me heavily during the opening advertisements and previews we were not interested watching - they lasted almost 20 minutes - and I worried how he will endure additional sitting for more than 2 hours. But after the movie we came to see started, it totally captivated him so much he forgot all the pain he felt during the previews and advertisements. I soon realized that I knew the history that inspired the creation of the movie and I knew the storyline and how it will conclude but it did not matter for the movie was so superbly and realistically done. Lets first off state that these are master filmmakers who have time and time again entertained and dazzled the film community and common movie goers.
The Hanks and Spielberg collaboration is astonishing to see on screen and there are some hidden names working behind this one here (THE COEN BROTHERS).
Its a beautifully executed film that is historically accurate and portrays the Spy incident of 1957 during the rise of the Cold Warvery well.
Tom Hanks shines as a whole-hearted lawyer who is given the difficult task of defending a Russian spy caught on US land.
Same goes for our U2 bomber spies overseas.
The premise is a trade of our spies for the Russian spy they decided not to execute.
Fluid framework and accurate props to make you feel like you are in the 1950s make this movie stand out well.
If you enjoyed Schindlers List, this is right up your alley and will have you intensely rooting for Tom Hanks the whole time.
Great film but in my opinion, not worth a 2 hour sitting.
Alot of the cuts were drawn out to what I call a "Buffy Cut"
Overall, great history and great actors with solid direction and solid screenwriting.
Probably and most likely an Oscar Contender.

Unfortunately too often for me, when expectations are high, I end up disappointed.

The movie is solid, the story of Cold War prisoner exchange between Soviet Union and United States is amazing. (Some people might remember when American pilot Powers was exchanged for a Russian spy Abel). Tom Hanks once again proved that he is one of the best actors. But can I call this movie great? Or even very good? Hardly. Too many cliches, characters are flat and simplistic. People are either good or bad, and we know better that it is much more complex and subtle than that. Especially in politics. Overall, I did like the movie but my score is 6 out of 10.

Yes, the movie is driven with dialogue to tell its story and it may turn people off, but if you're into engaging dialogue then this is the movie for you. I love how the movie explores the nature of man and how we often judge people as a society. It never flinched away from this subject matter but it also introduced real human connection from two opposite parties. While there are not many scenes like it but when its just a scene Tom Hanks and Mark Rylance, you feel this bond start to form amongst the two. In many ways, they form an unlikely friendship. I love how Spielberg transports us to this Cold War Era. You can feel his stamp through every shot and frame and even through the movie's narrative structure. And Thomas Newman is a great replacement for John Williams as a composer. For the type of music he's known for it really suites the movie well and fits in seamlessly. InI don't think I can criticize this movie, it's a Spielberg film after all, nearly flawlessly made, Tom Hanks is excellent as usual (but let's face it Tom Hanks has never acted poorly in ANY film EVER), mostly historically accurate as well. In fact if it would have been made by anyone else I may have liked it a lot more than I currently do, but alas Steven Spielberg has become a victim to his own success and ability. So all I can say is that while this movie is solid it's nothing spectacular, there are no great scenes but the story is well done and it's evenly represented, a couple of weeks ago I watched Edward Zwick's Pawn Sacrifice and found it to be very pro American and anti Russian, Spileberg of course is above all this pettiness and delivers a balanced film in which both sides are fairly represented. However, I was expecting the raw power that Spielberg delivered in Munich (last time he tackled the theme of espionage) but that's not what this movie is about, it feels a lot simpler and the stakes never feel high. Bridge of spies is a good movie and can go on the B-Side of Steven Spielberg's greatest hits along with The Terminal, Lincoln, War Horse etc. while the A side continues to have Schindler's List, Saving private Ryan, Raiders of the lost ark etc. Expand

The film is well shot although some of the visuals are heavy handed to a point of I get it. The film is two hours but feels longer (seriously I took two bathroom breaks during the film). All of the elements of the film are necessary, although it could’ve ended earlier, but it does result in a film that drags. Characters and plot points will be present for a while and then disappear for over an hour. There are a lot of people and places the film needs to cover and while it is all essential, especially in regards to setting up who the prisoners are, it does result in a film that is a tad unfocused and lengthy. So ultimately it comes down to is it worth it. Should Speilberg have taken the time to establish who all the prisoners were so we care about them and its not just some guy that captured at the expense of a flowing narrative. Or should the film have cut down on those sequences streamlining the film but making it a tad harder to connect with the film. There is no easy answer to this question. Nonetheless, Speilberg and the Cohen brothers, who apparently helped write this film, do their best to balance the film and result in something that while not something I’d want to go back and watch again as its not a fun blockbuster is well made and will likely be in the running for the Oscars. Oscar homework people this should be on your list. Expand

Here the scenario is one more time the war, and The Cold War in order to make people believe that is an original theme on his filmography. The protagonist is again a suffered hero, with incredible virtues, like Schindler, standing all by himself against a conflict of catastrophic proportions. Seems well until now, but this film turn itself into the new reference for slowness, there are no major scenes, the storytelling doesn’t exist and the viewer gets lost several times. Definitely Tom Hanks puts all pieces together, a really convincing performance, without him all the movie falls into the abysm. The Coen Brothers in the script were a big disappointment, their classic irony and mystery is absent. Spielberg did something right this time, getting rid of cheap sentimentalism and that is something to be grateful for; although there is still too much to work on. I still have faith on him. Expand

Spielberg's typical sentimentality and "Gemütlichkeit" ("cosiness, friendliness") evokes Jung's suspicions about hardness of heart, insensitivity and callousness hiding behind them. So it's understandable why I was not particularly interested in this director's movies. On the other hand, the scriptwriting involved Cohen snobs, who, with their limitations, grotesque and constant misanthropic giggling, also didn't evoke much enthusiasm. However surprisingly, combined efforts of the creator of sentimental trash and pair of arrogant cartoonists gave quite a good result. "Bridge of Spies" is, of course, not without typical drawbacks of Spielberg's and Cohen's flicks - from the pathetic tearfulness to the evil burlesque - but these flaws compensate each other to some extent and give the film an unexpected depth.

So the vulgar movie maker and pair of snobs unexpectedly created very interesting flick - sometimes quite rough, consisting of two separate movies (a quite weak legal drama and spy thriller) - that will keep you in suspense during almost all of its two hours. And what is particularly captivating, this is done without the involvement of a love story (with only a hint of romantic line of American student which, fortunately, wasn't developed further), without naked women, shootings and car chases. But with excellent dialogues, witty humour and catchy phrases ("Will it help?") in the Hollywood movies of 1980th style. For me, however, "Bridge of Spies" is first of all three episodes: a conversation in a restaurant between Hoffman and Donovan, Donovan's statement before the Supreme Court and the conversation between Donovan and Powers. In all these episodes Donovan expressed banal truths that is known to be always unclear and non-obvious - in the first episode, he expresses so non-obvious to most essence of the rule of law, recalling that it is the acceptance and observance of common rules (Constitution) makes an Irish and a German Americans; in the second one that the consistent application of these rules gives Americans a moral superiority which is the best weapon against an enemy, and in the third episode Donovan expresses perhaps the main idea that distinguishes Christian civilization from, say, Asian with its culture of shame - it doesn't matter what people think about you, your actions are what really matters. The rest of the audience may find in this movie other "things" such as "standing man" (though, of course, one can persist in stupidity as well and, as for me, it is not necessary for a man to copy a donkey), to admire Abel (the most persistent donkey) and take pleasure from a witty spy games.

But it’s not necessarily the kind of movie that appeals to today’s younger generation (who, like Francis Gary Powers, seem to be a bit of an anathema). I was interested in seeing this movie because, although I was just a kid, I was alive when the events depicted in this movie occurred and I have at least some, albeit vague, recollection about U-2 spy planes, how controversial the reconnaissance missions flown by these planes were, and about Gary Powers being shot down and captured by the Soviets. Maybe not surprisingly, when I saw this film everyone in the theater was over age 50. Despite this, I would recommend this film to anyone of any age. It’s a well-constructed piece of film making and credibly acted. It is not, however, a likely Oscar winner, as the pace of the movie occasionally drags like life in the dreary landscape of post-WWI East Germany. Expand

This cold war thriller is perfectly paced, with great witty dialogue thanks to the mastery of the Coen Brothers and incredible acting from Hanks and Rylance. Spielberg takes some great shots in this film, really capturing the essence of the cold war time period; but he does make a few choices that I get annoyed with.
First off, the lens flare in this film seems unneeded and forced upon the viewer almost as badly as a JJ Abrams Star Trek film, and Spielberg picked a far too sappy ending to what could’ve been left earlier and not made so forcefully happy towards the end.
Also, whilst Hanks chemistry with Rylance is brilliant, his chemistry with his wife in the film is not so brilliant. They just don’t seem natural together.
This is a solid, well-paced and extremely well written thriller and is definitely one people should go see. The dialogue is definitely what keeps it flowing, so big props to Coen Brothers.

These two guys had already collaborated for a few films like Saving Private Ryan and Catch Me If You Can so you knew that this would be an interesting film. Honestly although I still think that Bridge of Spies is a good movie I find it very comparable to Spielberg's Lincoln from 2012. It is almost all dialogue. Bridge of Spies does not have very many scenes that are that tense, sure the dialogue is good and Tom Hanks is as solid as ever but this could be a good movie to go to sleep to. I still had to give it a solid rating because I know this film is still good I just wish there could've been a bit more excitement. It the end I found the film to be a little flat. Expand

On its face, the film portrays a somewhat trite theme prevalent in most of Spielberg's work; namely, an unsuspecting, yet epigrammatic and intelligent protagonist (played brilliantly by the always trustworthy Hanks) becomes a hero. All the while saving and (arguably more importantly in terms of the film's underlying message) befriending a despised, vagabond, conspirator spy (played marvelously by Rylance). In malingering around the politics of the hyper- nationalistic media, legal system, and social/familial dynamics, Hanks' character maintains the resolution and steadfastness the assure that the U.S. Constitution is followed properly while almost single-handedly, working to restore international relations in one of the most alienating periods of international affairs. And yet, while the blackmail and fulminations are thrown in his face, the movie's jovial portrayal of the spy is warm and the two share a ligature of fondness. The cinematography is aphoristic, but rich in its prowess. The script is inspirational, quotable yet not too drab with an incorporation of humor. The audience is driven (perhaps necessarily) to feel compassion for the two hated men, who, through their own accord, are associated in a bondage that transcends politics, social angst and Weltschmerz that ultimately ends in triumph, harboring a true sense of reverence of how our two civilizations arrived here in the first place. Bridge of Spies tells the true story of a Cold War spy swap, during the height of tension between the U.S. and Russia. The time period was so tense that when films can capture that tone it's usually special, that being said the film doesn't quite capture that tone, but it comes close. Tom Hanks performance, and Spielberg's seasoned direction manage to save the film. When the film could have been slow, they save it by using either humor, or great acting, Acting that will most likely get Hanks an Oscar nomination. In the end Bridge of Spies isn't as good as it could have been, but is still admittedly a great film that will undoubtably get plenty of recognition at the 2015 Academy Awards. Expand

James Donovan: "Aren't you worried?"

Rudolf Abel: "Would it help?"

Bridge of Spies takes place during the Cold War, an American lawyer is recruited to defend an arrested Soviet spy in court, and then help the CIA facilitate an exchange of the spy for the Soviet captured American U2 spy plane pilot, Francis Gary Powers.

So I finally just watch Bridge of Spies and it was pretty damn good. Steven Spielberg once again made a great movie, and just like I said about Ridley Scott about how great it is that we still can go to the cinema today and see a new movie directed by an icon.

Steven Spielberg is the type of director you never know what you're going to get and I'm talking about the type of film making he uses. Spielberg will always make a well directed movie even when some of his movies are not great or something you'll never watch again, it will still be well directed. Steven Spielberg's directing in Bridge of Spies was absolutely superb, because every scene is so perfectly crafted and Spielberg knows when to cut to a emotional reaction with the characters. These a couple of scenes in this movie that I didn't notice was all in one long wide take with no breaks, and that's because I was so locked in on what was going on with the characters and the scene itself. Spielberg brilliance is still present today as he's masterful style of film making is still alive today. If you love that kind of film making that's so masterful, perfect and old school, then Bridge of Spies might be the movie for you. This is one of the best directed films I've seen this year.

Tom Hanks is one of the most lovable and respected actors of are times, as in every role he dose, he never disappoints. This is he's fourth collaboration with Spielberg after: Catch Me If You Can, Saving Private Ryan and The Terminal, and in Bridge of Spies Hanks once again deliverers a magnificent and believable performance. This is an Oscar worthy performance as he made his character so relatable, funny and very likable. Without spoiling anything, there's a scene in this movie where Tom Hanks character (James Donovan) gets followed by this unknown figure and at one point Donovan goes to sit at this restaurant to confront this man and the scene itself is just amazing, because Donovan knocks this guy to the ground with no action, just dialogue. Tom Hanks was amazing in this movie.

Another performance that blow me away was Mark Rylance as the soviet spy. I have seen this actor before in the hit TV show "Wolf Hall", and he was great in that show, but he impressed the hell out of me in this movie, because Mark Rylance was absolutely fantastic. This guy deserves an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor and I hope he dose, because it would be a huge sub if he doesn't get nominated. Mark Rylance was fan-freaking-tastic in this movie.

The cinematography was excellent, the score was great, the dialogue is outstanding and the story was really good.

Now for the problems: These a couple of scenes around the second act that wasn't that interesting to me.

If you don't like talky movies then you may not enjoy Bridge of Spies, because this whole movie is nothing but talking and I know some people may not find that enjoyable. I'm the kind of person who likes dialogue driven movies and that's why I enjoyed this movie, because of the movies excellent dialogue and I how locked in I was while watching it, but I know it's not going to be for everyone and if you think this movie is boring because it's a talky movie then that's fine.

Overall Bridge of Spies isn't Spielberg's greatest movie compared to his other ones, but it is a well crafted movie with excellent performances, fantastic directing and great writing. Bridge of Spies is the best Cold War thriller I've ever seen.

This is a masterfully crafted thriller that is filled with superb acting and some surprisingly funny moments.

Mark Rylance plays Rudolf Abel who is committed of being a spy and James has to defend him during the trials. Little do we know that an American pilot named Francis Gary Powers (Austin Stowell) has been taken away by the Russians and it's up to James to negotiate an exchange to bring the two committed men back home.

What really surprised me about this movie was the subtle comedy, this is a powerful movie that further proves why Steven Spielberg is one of the best working directors today. Good film, great acting, good story, great direction. Let down by 2 things.

1st is the length, film is way too long and has far too many unnecessary scenes.
2nd is that as a PG-13 (12A) rated film, the production couldn't represent the time the film is set in in a realistic manner. Due to restrictions on how smoking/drinking/casual sexism/casual racism can (and actually more importantly can't) be shown... We get a fact-based film, set in a world of complete fiction.

Beyond that, if you can just accept they spent millions on sets/props/locations etc, but then sanitized it to the point of absurdity, then this film is definitely worth a watch.

For me, it's merely another reason to double-check a film's 'rating' before deciding if it's going to recreate a historical period with any accuracy.

Whether it's ET calling home or a lawyer negotiating with Russians during the cold war, the story is presented in an absolutely epic way, like depeche mode use increased decibels to power up their music. The first part of the movie is a courtroom drama featuring the story of a professional lawyer with some strong personal ethics defending the "evil" Russian spy and it reminded me of "Philadephia" (also starring Tom Hanks). Τhe second (and longest) part of the film is the espionage/film-noir one, featuring the negotiations of the lawyer with East Germany and Russia to the exchange of the Russian spy with Americans. The story is largely based on true events but of course there is always room for some subtle American propaganda and epic dramaturgy, Spielberg's specialty. Tom Hanks plays his role with great maturity and efficiency and the story is compact, despite the long duration of the film (141 mins). I guess the point of the film is that ethics and common sense are rare qualities that can really change the world. Still, the fact that the film is after all a strongly presented biography doesn't allow it to be a really classic film-noir film. Nevertheless it's worth watching. Expand

Spielberg adds this to his legacy of high quality and passionate films. I'm glad finally a movie was made about this infamous true story involving the then top secret U2 spy plane crash over soviet territory in the 60's.

The movie follows an insurance lawyer (excellently played by Tom Hanks) called by the state to defend an accused soviet spy. The events that unfold excellently portray the intelligence/espionage war that was the cold war between the east and west, and the looming possibility of an all out nuclear war.

Older sis gets stood up by her mystery man (duh) while younger bro has been scared out of his wits watching a cartoon of an A-bomb attack ala Reefer Madness in school . And I was sure dad/hero/ Hanks and his wife slept in separate beds with one foot touching the floor. But back to the story which is not worthy of a movie , not if you don’t get into the heads of the characters - especially the two Abercrombie and Fitch models- Powers and Pryor- in this reality game of Spy Swap. Mercifully, Mark Rylance plays Russian spy Rudolf Abel - not Christoph Waltz - the only thing that didn't leave me cold. For a movie with a slow start it has way too many endings - the corniest - a faint smile from a passenger on a subway. Plodding, preachy and predictable this “Bridge" finally takes a toll on your patience to where anyone who paid $13 for a ticket would want to jump. Expand

The film is gorgeously shot, every frame seems like a painting. But the film's visuals are not the only good thing you can say about it. It is a solid, well acted drama with an engaging story that won't leave fans of the genre disappointed.

Overall I have nothing but good things to say about it and I would highly recommend it. There are however some minor nitpicks. The film strikes one as very good but it never rises to excellent when you get the feeling that it could have. The film is done by professionals who know their craft and thus the film is well polished but lacks that special spark, a deeper substance in the story that would make you love it instead of merely liking it, however much.

Of course all of that could be merely a question of preference and for some this movie would be satisfying enough. Again, I have nothing bad to say against Bridge of Spies. I thoroughly enjoyed and have already included it in my list of top movies of 2015.

It's a solid film, that's about 1/3 courtroom drama. It's very low energy, NOT a spy thriller, as one might think. It's a story based on real people and as such, it tends to be a bit boring. The movie tries very hard to feel bigger and more important than it was - especially at then end - which happened to have about 3 endings. Overall, nice story - nothing riveting though. Expand

It may have been slow, but still the pace never was an issue. Instead, we got to focus in on a fascinating story that features a fantastic performance from Tom Hanks at the very center of it. A captivating story from the Cold War, Hanks plays a man who is keenly aware of the situation around him, but does not let it cloud his humanitarian beliefs, which is truly noble. He knocks this role out of the park and his talent is only matched by a terrific performance from Mark Rylance. The direction from Steven Spielberg is also very good and he reminds us of just how talented he truly is. The Coen brothers script is also very good as expected and really shows how good of a writing team they are, though I obviously love when they're in the director's chair too. However, what holds Bridge of Spies back is that though I find it truly captivating, it is a true story. As such, no matter how captivating, it is held back a bit by the constraints of that and its dedication to accuracy. As such, it winds up not being quite as good of a film as it tries to cover so much pertinent information and, as such, winds up being a little longer than needed. That being said, Bridge of Spies is still a good film that is a great combo of great acting from Hanks and direction from Spielberg. Expand

Totally unexpected PG-13 rated negotiation-drama based on the Cold War.

The movie that should have been made 50 years ago, but due to the international political tension it did not take off. So now it's here, the same director made it. It's a rocking combo, once again Spielberg and Hanks come together, tell me who's going to miss that. Simply spellbinding, one of the best movie of the year.

I think this flick is for adults. There's no sex, no nudity, not even a single kiss or the bad language and zero violence, its fine for teens and kids can understand, but the story is what I meant that suits only for the grown ups. Like the usual, this Spielberg movie is easy to follow, there's no tricky twists and turns, but aimed for only the event that's based on the real.

Over a 2 hour long negotiation drama with surrounded by suspense and thrills. It's completely a one man show and the end has been just like everybody wanted. I'm not surprised that it is nominated for the Oscars in the 6 categories including the best motion picture. I would be very happy if it puts at least a couple of trophies to its basket. I feel it is a must see if you're interested in WWII related subjects, other than the war.

It got a nuanced story where both characters & nations are told from different perspectives. It might even be one of Spielberg’s finest -- and it got a clever way of presenting the never ending theme of morality. Basic values of human life(s) & the everlasting stagnation of war through ”growing walls rather than people”, are present traits of Spielberg. Tom Hanks continues to outperform, he delivers a very relatable James Donovan. He could have had more maturing, & it’s not a film for the drama-hater, but there isn’t that much more to criticize about. Well written dialogs are on the other hand shockingly character fitting, & the metaphoric images throughout the film only strengthens Spielberg’s position among today’s filmmakers.

With the help of co-witters the Coen Brothers, ‘Bridge of Spies’ is a mix of those elements, woven together by Spielberg’s mastery of storytelling and dramatic flair into a meticulously crafted true story, with no small measure of idealism.

Despite its narrative, ‘Bridge of Spies’ is not what you may expect from a spy film, in fact it may be the most accurate depiction of cold war (or any era) espionage in recent cinema history, so if you’re expecting a tense thriller then prepared to be disappointed. This is a masterfully crafted, measured and often slow-build drama that is as much about the intricacies of geopolitics during a complicated period in our history as it is a human drama… and one which resonates today.

Tom Hanks delivers yet another solid charismatic performance as a figure who was linked to several of the major events at the height of the cold war, while Mark Rylance has been rightly singled out for his deliberate chronically understated turn as Rudolf Abel, an unflappable soviet spy with unshakable integrity.

As expected, the visual style is faultless with meticulous costume and production design vividly bringing the period to life, ‘Bridge of Spies’ boasts a beautiful aesthetic that’s typical of its cinematographer and long-time Spielberg collaborator Janusz Kaminski.

There is nothing unusual about a Steven Spielberg film with an underlying sense of optimism, but ‘Bridge of Spies’ has an unapologetic streak of personal and collective idealism which borders on sentimentality, particularly when you consider the realities of cold war politics. Notwithstanding the espionage, the film is as much about how one extraordinary man and his principles helped to shape the course of recent history, albeit a glossy textbook drama version of that story.

The Bottom Line…
Despite a steady pace with limited tension and a fanciful idealism, ‘Bridge of Spies’ is a meticulously crafted and engaging cold war classic, with plenty of charm and human drama to keep you enthralled throughout a long runtime, another success from the Hollywood “firm” of Spielberg & Hanks.

I am reminded of how I was laughing so hard at the obvious sentimentality of A.I. that I actually had to leave the theater. Agree with another reader that we don't care much about what happens to the spies. One could argue that it's not about them but about the main character, James Donovan, but he is so flat and solid in his convictions as to be unbelievable, even played by Tom Hanks who I do think is a great actor. And what a waste of Amy Ryan playing a suburban housewife though I am glad she is getting some mainstream attention. Expand

Steven Spielberg is a director and as direction goes, this film is beautiful. The cinematography is amazing and this competes with some of Spielberg's best work. He's undoubtedly earned Academy attention once again. So to say Spielberg is the flaw is misguided criticism. Where this film is flawed is numerously amongst other blame. The editing for one is often sub-par and sometimes terrible. Some transitions feel like a made for television film. So in this aspect you can blame Spielberg, but ultimate blame lies with the editor. Next is the lighting. This is something I do place some blame on Spielberg which is why I said it's amongst his best work and not a frontrunner. Some scenes are so washed and so bright it makes it hard to believe Spielberg didn't say "Cut! Now turn the **** brights down!" But, hey I felt that way all through Minority Report as well and still love it. But Spielberg works wonders in so many other ways this film deserves applause due to his credit. The screenplay however is also flawed. The story starts so much stronger than it finishes, losing ground along the way as it turns from an exciting thrill-ride of spies and espionage to a heartwarming personal victory amongst men and their countries. It loses reality along the way, becoming fluffy instead of brutal. It's definitely a safer approach than Spielberg took with Schindler's List. This means he'll win over a larger box office and DVD rentals, but less critical praise. You'll also hear flack from those who have to compare the truth but needless to say this is a film and not a documentary so ignore the fiction and enjoy the story. But what happens when you change history is you can get caught in making something hardly worth believing. The relationship between the two lead characters becomes just that. Though the ongoing "would it help" bit is charming, the relationship is flawed by the simple nature of its controversial existence. Sure, we're all human, but this was a Soviet spy during the Cold War. No one would've defended him so faithfully. In the end we get a somewhat fluffy finale out of our protagonist that will not rub the fancy of many of us technical film critics, but it does win the hearts of the majority. Hanks ensures this with an all too familiar performance. Though Hanks has become a tad monotonous, he's still and always will be Tom Hanks. Meaning he's damn good at what he does. My ultimate verdict is that Spies is not as incredible as its Rotten Tomatoes review, it is amongst Spielberg's best work and perhaps the best cinematography this year, and it finds itself in a comfortable range of those who will love it and those who will really like it. I believe my judgment to be more critical than most will take this film and I still liked it quite a bit. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Good acting and a very interesting Cold War setting, but found the overall tone disappointingly hokey. What they seemed to want to show as compassion struck me more as a need for attention and self-aggrandizement on the part of Donovan. The typical sort of sugar-coating you often see in "true" stories. And all the feel-good justification of his big gambles felt like it was more for our benefit than any likely rendition of what actually happened. Hanks was great, as usual, and Rylance was terrific also, but considering how small and one-dimensional his role was I really have a hard time understanding how it warranted Best Supporting Actor, other than his previous Tony awards. In terms of spiritSteven Spielberg and Tom Hanks re-team for "Bridge Of Spies," a cinematic retelling of the 1962 exchange of captured Soviet spy Rudolf Abel for crashed U-2 pilot Francis Gary Powers and American student Frederic Pryor. In terms of spirit alone, this is a Spielberg film through and through - even if it does feel a bit more muted than it should be. It's a film about a rare moment of diplomatic harmony occurring between two nations who should otherwise despise each other, and it should be seen by any and all self-described history buffs (such as myself). It is also, however, essentially a movie about Tom Hanks going on a tour of meetings with a series people, some of whom are more interesting in others. And while the dialogue, acting, and aesthetics at hand are all acceptable, I couldn't help but yearn for a more urgent brand of pacing throughout. Indeed, the tension at hand is historically self-evident, but it could've definitely been ratcheted up a bit more within the terms of the film. Expand

Things start promisingly and one could be forgiven for thinking that the quality was going to match that of last year’s brilliant ‘Imitation Game’. Unfortunately, after 60 minutes the attention starts to wander and the not particularly compelling story begins to lose impetus. The acting is reasonably good, although Tom Hanks is nowhere near his best. The cinematography, however, is gorgeous. This is journeyman Spielberg, probably less, and is punctuated with his usual trademark of mushy music. In his good work his scores are integral and accepted despite all their obvious manipulation. In his underwhelming stuff, of which this must definitely be counted, they almost become the final nail in the coffin. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Bridge of Spies is a dad movie. In fact, it is one of the most dad movies I have ever seen. It is pleasant and predictable and slightly overlong with an upbeat feel good ending that brings a sniffle and tear to dad's eye. Honestly, I have to go back to The Right Stuff to find a more dad movie.

Tom Hanks plays Tom Hanks as if Tom Hanks found himself in To Kill a Mockingbird all of a sudden. So much so one fully expected his younger daughter to be named Scout. In all fairness, he mixes this in with a segue into Mr. Smith goes to Washington and a touch of Walter Mitty. In other words, he has gone full all American Dad. All that said he is actually quite good in the role. Like he is wearing a comfortable pair of shoes. The movie is well cast. Every shot is well composed with the experienced eye of Spielberg. It is an incredibly handsome movie even if it sometimes comes across as a little safe. There is one scene in particular with Tom’s daughter Scout watching television and a said to my wife someone is going to throw a brick through the window. There was no reason for the scene set-up and shot except for the brick through the window trope. (Which in all fairness actually happened in real life except neither Hanks character nor his family were home at the time) Interestingly the movie was actually attempted to be filmed before with Gregory Peck in 1965 but was considered too sensitive due to Cold War tensions. This was the perfect Gregory Peck role.

Spielberg got a tear in my eye at the end and the film was more entertaining than it had any right to be. If you have a dad in your life spend a nice Sunday afternoon watching this film with him. You won’t regret it.

overall, its a good movie but it does have some faults.the middle is a bit messy and it seems like theres a few different movies rolled into one. good to watch on a rainy day.

This film shows that Spielberg remains one of the greatest living directors in the world. Beautifully filmed, with a great screen play and Tom Hanks like always wonderful. The only thing I don't like is that the movie es a little bit too long.

I honestly don't think it deserves an Oscar nomination, for Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg, or the movie itself, but Bridge of Spies is still worth going to the movies to see it.
