However, this movie, while good, is kind of boring. It's not even close to being as good as I had hoped it would be, and I didn't have super-high expectations anyway, as odd as that may sound. Don't get me wrong, it's good. But it's not THAT good. Tom Hanks was great as always, but it's not a stand-out role. Mark Rylance has been nominated for the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, but he was just a good character. He could have been replaced by anybody and it would have been good. And on that note, this film should NOT be nominated for best picture. There were at least two other films that didn't get nominated that are far superior in every way that didn't get a nomination. It does have some interesting direction, and I liked the way it moved along at some points, but then there were a couple times when I didn't like how it went from one scene to another. Bridge of Spies isn't great, but isn't bad. I think it would have been better as a novel than a film. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. An unlikely story except its based on an actual event. An insurance lawyer gets himself involved in a high stakes negotiation between the USA , East Germany and the Soviet Union. Tom Hanks is Tom Hanks. Great as always but a supporting actor,Mark Rylance , almost steals the movie. Underplaying a Russian spy , he becomes Tom's client and turns in a terrific bit of acting. The story is solid , the cinematography recreates the 1960's and the direction is consistent. Its a very well done film Expand

But now that we've got the Leos and the Toms Hardys, it is both quite sad and nostalgic that Tom Hanks is the same. Sad because he'll be relegated to support status soon, but nostalgic because whenever you see him you remember great movies like Saving Private Ryan and Catch Me If You Can, among others. Along with Steven Spielberg and the Coen Brothers they should be enough to pique your interest in this film. If not, think the Green Mile x Argo. Expand

In general, I believe 2015 was one the most successful years in Hollywood. Most of the movies in this year were so eye-catching. And this one was another important work by Steven Spielberg. Besides, Tom Hanks was excellent.

Slightly more emotional than necessary perhaps, but that won't stop me revisiting this one several times over the years. Expand

The first time the action takes place in the United States, excellent judicial drama. With a slow development of events, which is noteworthy completely without musical accompaniment (a rarity in modern cinema). The second part, this is already an action movie in the style of M (James Bond), where the whole action is accelerated and at least repel the turnover of musical accompaniment. And the second part is terrible. In the first, the USSR and the GDR are shown as barbarians. Great propaganda. The most important thing is how Spielberg fakes the facts. Berlin was bombed not by the USSR, but by the Allies. The USSR, on the contrary, helped restore the ruins of eastern Berlin. And finally Abel in the USSR was recognized as a hero and confirmed the status of a spy. And to talk about the light in which the GDR is represented does not have to, some kind of ghetto.
And most importantly, 2 part of the film is a natural B-movie, which you watch by inertia and only for the sake of acting by Tom Hanks.

Tom Hanks and Mark Rylance are a spellbinding pairing and their relationship is without doubt the highlight.

Spielberg never fails to tell a fascinating tale, yet perhaps restricted somewhat in being true to reality this story lacked twists.

Hanks is always worth watching however this feature left no lasting impression.

Bridge Of Spies

The negotiations are predictable and a bit eerie, maybe because it is based on factual events which the maker in here, does not completely rely upon giving enough space for the drama to fit in. Bridge Of Spies is way too long for its material; especially the side characters that follows upto the event seems a bit redundant, and needs better editing. Spielberg does not let the movie slip away even for a frame; his execution is amazing in it and gives enough range for the actors to settle in on the screen. Tom Hanks has the job to glue all the sequences up for the audience to root for the character for he is the only common or familiar on screen and he stinks to its job very well with some good supporting cast like Mark Rylance. Bridge Of Spies comes off enthralling to the audience contrary to its genre; which I suppose shows the excellence of the director, for the writing seemed a bit loose on building up the characters for the audience to that level of drama as it was on paper.

Everything holds that little bit extra weight when you realise the film is loosely based on a true story. The film is well shot - even if the lens distortion at times is off-putting - but sadly the entire film just feels...a bit uninspired. The film comes and goes, but I don't feel like a lasting impression has been left. Some action scenes feel like they're there just to say "hey, are you still watching?". Expand
