The racist stereotypes in this movie ruin it. It really isn't all that good.

Breakfast At Tiffany's

3 Out Of 5

Breakfast At Tiffany's is a character driven romantic drama about a complex girl that weaves nothing but trouble to herself and others. As much as mysterious the character is kept, the characteristics and the properties explained or not explained is worth the whole build up of it. But this is where the feature gets stuck, not only is it confused to its core in order to the theme or the tone of the feature it is utterly imbalanced and unstable throughout the course of it. Few goofy and flawed sequences especially in its initial stages throws off the audience with a knack for imputing humor forcibly is something that grows annoying as it ages on screen. It is undeniably chalky around the edges but its heart is somehow in the right place that keeps the audience rooting for the characters. The writing is strong on keeping the characters intriguing and pacing up the script but falls flatly on shifting from one to another; requires better polishing. Repetitive props, familiar characters and the awareness of the surrounding and the way it uses them wisely is soothing to eyes. It is rich on technical aspects like background score, editing and costume design but is short on cinematography and camera work which could have easily been a lot better. Edwards; the director, still needs a bit of work on his executing skills but his self-created world is something that is eye-popping. Hepburn is on her A game where she has the range and rights to carry it off all in her shoulder with Peppard supporting him decently. Pragmatic conversations, character's eerie perspective and stunning colourful visuals and costume designing are the high points of the feature. Breakfast At Tiffany's is actually too caloric for it to be nutritious and the primary reason is its ability to draw out the attention from the safer textbook equation.

Despite fame and a great Audrey Hepburn, it is not as good as I thought.

I confess that I expected something more from this film. It's good, but it's not as good as I thought it would be. Basically, it tells the story of a gold digger, a luxury prostitute who wants to marry a rich man and get on with life in the simplest way ... but who ends up falling in love with a man who is everything she was not looking for .

Well, this is one of those films that is based on the performance of an actor, in this case Audrey Hepburn. She is beautiful and is at her best in this film. The film has an impact and strength because of her and her extraordinary performance. Even so, I agree with many critics who say that this film is not even the best she has ever made, although this discussion is subjective. It is however the most famous. George Peppard is also good, but he never gets to meet her. On the negative side, I hated to see Mickey Rooney bring a Japanese to life according to the most deeply prejudiced and insulting stereotype. I already talked a little about the script, but honestly I thought that the story told tells me very little and that the main character is deeply unpleasant due to its materialism and futility. Another actress in that role and the film would probably be forgotten in the present, as many have been.

Finally, a word to the soundtrack, which is the best and most interesting technical detail of the film. Composed by Henry Mancini, it features the famous and touching song "Moon River".

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a somewhat slow moving, dull film. I don't suppose im the main intended audience for it but it really didn't appeal to me much. The characters didn't seem interesting, although I liked some of the settings/surroundings and the music used was quite good. I know its a classic film for many and I guess I can understand why, if you like the whole mystery behind the main character, Holly Golightly and enjoy finding what happens to her, romantically etc. Audrey Hepburn gives a decent performance as said character. There are some instances of nice dialogue but not a whole lot else really that greatly appealed to me. Its obviously fairly sentimental, which may or may not appeal to you, depending on your taste in films and the like. Also I can't not mention the clearly (in this modern day) racist depiction of an asian man by Mickey Rooney, that made me cringe.

For fans of Hepburn etc., I'd recommend this film but if your mainly keen on thought provoking or gritty/dark drama fans, then I wouldn't recommend it as such, no.

I definitely get the whole Audrey Hepburn thing, she gives a great performance here. The racist caricature stuff is deservedly shamed, thankfully its not really that big of a part of the story.
