If you dont like this movie maybe you have seen a little of yourself in the people Borat meets on his travels. The evangelist scene had me rolling on the floor in hysterics. The fact that Sacha is a devout Jew makes it all the more funny.

Sure, we'd like to believe that anti-semitism, racism, etc no long exists. Fact is it does, and it's not going away anytime soon. Critics say there are 2 groups, those who get it and love it and those who dont and hate it. I don't think it's quite as simple as that. There are people who don't get it and hate it. Then there are people who don't really get it, but laugh cause they're idiots. Next are those who get it but are too full of themselves to laugh. I went into this movie with high expectations, because of the reviews that praised it as an incisive satire; and was disappointed to find that all Cohen did was point out the obvious, and in such a repetitive manner that "Borat" could easily have been distilled into about twenty minutes with no significant loss. There are two great scenes: the Southern dinner party and the naked wrestling scene. Otherwise, the film is tiresome and unimaginative; the scatalogical and sexual stuff ceases to be funny after the second mispronunciation of "vagina", and the film makes no larger point about the sexism and anti-Semitism it exposes in Borat's unwitting victims-- it just gawks at them, and finds the gawking sufficient. Many of the complaints about Borat are that the humor is crude and mean, even to the point of being cruel to the other people in the film who are not in on his joke. While there is a sense in which this is true, the real humor does not lie Many of the complaints about Borat are that the humor is crude and mean, even to the point of being cruel to the other people in the film who are not in on his joke. While there is a sense in which this is true, the real humor does not lie in Borat calling a woman unattractive, but in the reactions of people around him as they occasionally challenge him but more often fail to stand up to the bully. Borat is a bully, without doubt, and the edgiest part of Sasha Baron Cohen's humor is that he uses this character to draw other people into complicity with the bigotry and cruelty that he puts on. Baron Cohen's humor is risky, and the laughs come at a cost. He must exploit the people in his film in order to create the situations that generate the humor, and he also exploits us as an audience by demanding that we laugh at Borat, also forcing us into a kind of complicity. Humor tends to function on the premise of laughing at someone, and by cajoling unwitting subjects to become objects of humor, Baron Cohen pushes the limits for what is acceptable in comedy. Borat is a satire of America, but also a test case of the ethical boundaries of comedy. Expand

To me it was the other way around. While some people seem to think that humor is being used to make fun of America and culture, I believe that America and culture have been used to make a brand of humor that I miss. Silliness. Borat didn't exactly offend me (And this is coming from a guy whose got a Jewish family and some deeply patriotic friends) but it energized me and I was thoroughly entertained by the experience. Borat is sophisticated yet it's very very stupid. it's smart ass and non-sequitor at the same time. It isn't making fun of anything really. It's just using the offensive, tabboo, and inappropriate aspects of pop culture and america and saying "Look how funny this can be!" LIGHTEN UP PEOPLE. For all those people who just didn't find it funny that's ok but for those who think that this is some conspiracy film to spoil america's name, it's just taking some of the nastier aspects of it and turning the joke on the public. Sure it might reveal some things about our culture but let's not make it out to a film that should unhinge our very way of thinking. If you find something to think about from the film, great. If you don't, that's great too. Just please...this is a comedy, not a documentary. Lighten up people. Expand

There were some funny I sat in the cinema wondering whether the film - a sort of Jackass-cum-Candid Camera, written and played by an undergrad of limited intellect and even less comedic talent - was the same film as acclaimed by critics. There were some funny moments in the first half but the second half dragged with few laughs and some misplaced attempts at pathos. This comedy was also mean-spirited - exploiting the Romanian (where it was filmed) villagers like performing monkeys for a few dollars a day in bit parts aimed at confirming Borat's stereotypical Third World attitudes and behaviour - a dubious activity from which Baron Cohen has made a considerable number of fast bucks. Thank God the man has left Britain and gone to settle in that mixture of concrete and desert known as Los Angeles where he should feel right at home with other amoral mega-egos. Hopefully, when he next minces onto the big screen as Bruno the fashionista, all will see him coming and be able to avoid his entrapment into another low-brow comedy epic that appeals to the 'Frat brothers' in his (mainly male) side-split audience. PS - although the films fans are wetting themselves trying to prove what a nasry reflection it is of the US+A, there were only a few bigots present in the film I viewed and most people who were foxed into appearing came across as endlessly patient and kind towards this drip of a man (in any culture) known as Borat.
