I'm really trying to think of the reason this film got so many good reviews, but I can't. The movie had very few funny moments, although I didn't sit through the whole thing, it was too crude and boring.

He is a genius at finding and poking society's soft spots. As the character BORAT, Cohen has brought to light all the things our Western societies are most afraid to acknowledge. In fact, compared to BORAT most so-called "comedy movies" these days miss the point completely. BORAT is hilarious!!! By totally obliterating the boundaries of decency, and by highlighting the massive gap between what actual people espouse and what they really think - especially their prejudices - BORAT has done more than any other recent movie to revitalize the comedy genre. From start to finish, this movie is WONDERFULLY OBSCENE! Expand

I simply cannot understand why this movie has been critically acclaimed. It does not make sense for me, at all. It is not an intelligent comedy. There are only a few sparse and quick, as a matter of fact, funny moments.

But it's not just Cohen's daring that makes the film so effective: It is also the character's awe-inspiring oafishness that gives Borat its juice. Whether he's admiring a Victoria's Secret window display a little too enthusiastically, or engaging in a bout of naked wrestling up and down the halls of a glitzy hotel, Borat is constantly revealing new depths to his aggressive, taboo-smashing cluelessness, which is why the movie never runs out of steam. Maybe it's just because I'm an American woman with the requisite body issues, but that makes me feel kind of bad. Borat is directed by Larry Charles, a director and producer of many episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm, another classic in the I-can't-believe-he-just-said-that comedy canon. But Baron Cohen's jaw-dropping gall makes even Curb's Larry David look like a blushing wallflower. Whether you attribute that gall to fearless honesty or shameless crassitude is up to you. Cohen, one of four screenwriters on "Borat," extract gems of both verbal and visual felicity throughout. None are more in-your-face--literally--than the nude wrestling match between Borat and Azamat in their Dallas hotel room. This is Cohen, one of four screenwriters on "Borat," extract gems of both verbal and visual felicity throughout. None are more in-your-face--literally--than the nude wrestling match between Borat and Azamat in their Dallas hotel room. This is followed by a chase all around the hotel, ending in a meeting room full of astonished real-life mortgage brokers. The way it's filmed it really does feel like a high-flying improvisation executed by two exceptionally brave actors. With comedy, often it's the loose, slapdash project with little evident polish or money--"Holy Grail" in the 1970s; "This Is Spinal Tap" in the 1980s--that ends up highly esteemed, endlessly quoted, labeled a classic or, like "Holy Grail," turned into a musical. "Borat" belongs in that list, even though its punches are wilder. Four years ago Cohen brought his best-known character, the faux-rapper Ali G, to the screen in "Ali G Indahouse." Unreleased theatrically in the U.S. the film was a huge hit in Britain, but it was a dumbed-down hit, raunchy and obvious. "Borat," by contrast, may be raunchy and abrasive, but dumb it's not. It sticks to its guns and stays true to Cohen's particular talents. As the man from Kazakhstan likes to say: Great success! Expand

With the exception of a couple of great scenes, particularly the Pam Anderson scene, this was A LOT less funny than I was expecting, and it has no plot. This is generally what happens when you base a movie on a sketch comedy character - to make it last 80 minutes you start relying on the same gags and jokes over and over, and the whole thing really drags. If foreign persons with strong accents and mangled English from backward developing countries are not something you're inclined to laugh at for their own sake, you probably won't find this at all funny. I also don't see the "skewering cultural commentary" that reviewers talked about - if there's any commentary on American culture here it's only the most shallow and stereotyped sort. Expand

This is one of those movies. After reading and hearing how funny people found this movie I had high expectations of at least having a few laugh out loud moments. There were none. After enduring the whole movie resisting the temptation to press the fast forward button, in case I missed a funny part, I struggled with trying to analyze why I seemed to be alone in finding this humorless. I concluded that since since Borat's comic routine is basically to insult and embarrass people, the only way it is funny to me is if the victim reacts in a funny manner. They do not, which means Borat has to carry this entire movie himself and frankly he fails. Frequently I felt sorry for the people involved who were, despite some of their beliefs or personal prejudices, for the most part, nice people. I would advise people to avoid this movie unless you enjoy immature toilet humor and like to see decent people humiliated. Expand

All you people who are so wildly against this movie are the kind of people this movie targets. All of you shaking your head at this movie remind me of a certain veteran vetenarian Ali-G had met. How can you try to knock this movie for having dirty humor? There's nothing here that comes close to when Borat had a crowded southern bar singing "Throw the Jew Down the Well", but he comes close (and Cohen is actually Jewish, so anyone trying to call him a racist is an idiot). The things he got the college kids to say, the ones who will some day be independent citizens of our country, was amazing. And how is it not funny to see the reactions of people he tries to politely kiss? Are we that uncomfortable with our sexuality that kissing, dirty words, and naked wrestling cross the line? Scratch the last one. That was filthy. If you don't like getting made fun of, then yeah, you'll hate this movie. But if you're willing to just laugh at the amount of racism, hostility, and ignorance left in this country, then this movie is mind blowing. There's also a level of kindness as well. The Jewish couple he "escapes" from were a ray of hope. I'm not going to argue if you just don't agree with the humor. Personally, I think movies like Norbit, Wildhogs, and National Lampoons are offensively unfunny, but hey, that's just me. I'm sure there aren't any critics who share my opinion. Expand

In an age where everyone is sarcastic and punch lines are smarmily laced with irony, this film ultimately disappoints. I typically try to temper my expectations when going to see a critic's darling, but I walked out wondering: what did miss? The reality is: nothing. I saw a second-rate comedian going the shock route in what critics are deeming social satire. This might have worked as an NYU film student's final project, or a 7 minute clip on YouTube - but comic genius? Whichever critic compared Cohen to Lenny Bruce and Richard Pryor needs to seriously get help for their obvious crack problem. What have we learned that we didn't already know? I was toally underwhelmed by the 9th-grade "wow" irony of the kind southern lady on Secession Ave allowing her immigrant guest to stay in her house even though he brought his bagged poop to the dinner table, yet calls the police when the black prostitute arrives. You can hear Cohen practically yelling, "DON'T YOU GET IT?" The only real satire that worked in this movie is that of reality TV, which Cohen actually applied with subtlety - so much in fact, that most people who think the movie is funny don't even realize what he was doing. This is the only reason I didn't give this movie a zero: He is making fun of the people who think the movie is funny. You could be one of them. I'm not. Expand

Woe unto those nations that cannot take a joke, fo they become more buttlike in the unlaughingness of their overreacts (as Borat would surely mangle the phrase). First unleashed on the world in a series of BBC comedic sketches on the Woe unto those nations that cannot take a joke, fo they become more buttlike in the unlaughingness of their overreacts (as Borat would surely mangle the phrase). First unleashed on the world in a series of BBC comedic sketches on the Cambridge alumnus Cohen's Da Ali G Show and later picked up for domestic consumption by HBO, Borat is the ugly American (or Brit) from elsewhere: a clueless, gangly, mustachioed moron prone to anti-Semitic tirades so subversively over-the-top that the only serious reaction is giggles. This feature-length expansion of Cohen's deliciously ridiculous character accomplishes what decades of Soviet propaganda failed to do: It points out and underscores issues of race, religious intolerance, classism, and all manner of very American social ills by giving the culprits just enough rope to hang themselves by their own petards (and then some). On the face of it, Borat is a mockumentary. It follows the titular clod and his producer, Azamat (Davitian), from their backwater Kazakhstan hovels (where Borat lives with his sister, "the number four prostitute in all of Kazakhstan!") to America on an ostensible mission of discovery and cultural growth. Almost immediately, however, the lovesick Borat falls for the image of Pamela Anderson, and the film heads west with marriage on its mind. In between Borat's arrival in New York City and the end of his epic quest are some of the most fearless acts of transgressive comedy in years. Forever in character, Cohen wrangles invitations for Borat to poshly racist Southern dinner parties, meets with nonplussed feminists (where he compares the size of the female brain to that of a squirrel), wanders dazed and confused into a holy-rolling pentecostal megachurch, and scares the bejesus out of Baywatcher Anderson. It is the type of comedy that (yes) reaches the depths of shamelessness and outrageousness that blow your mind in a way you're probably not ready for, but will probably cause you to laugh, hard. However, aside from Borat is the bomb. It is the type of comedy that (yes) reaches the depths of shamelessness and outrageousness that blow your mind in a way you're probably not ready for, but will probably cause you to laugh, hard. However, aside from the shock humor, and more impotant, is the satire and nude exposing of rascism, bigotry, and general human roboticness that this movie exposes. Only a movie with 90 percent toilet humor can get away with the level of political and social satire that this movie does. It is an incredibly funny, but also brave and honest film that hopefully will inspire more independent thought in Hollywood and (to some degree) Americans and the world as a whole. Expand

Critics want this movie to say something important so badly Chalk this one up to the "backlash against political correctness". We've lost any sense of what is acceptable or unacceptable just because we don't want to be PC any more. Critics want this movie to say something important so badly that they are quick to determine everything that is incredibly crude and offensive as a form of satire that somehow points the finger back at us. That's BS. It is what it is... Jackass but with a guy pretending to be from Kazhakstan and a half-baked "plot." Somehow the joke is supposed to be on us because Sacha Baron Cohen is the only one in on the "joke". Look, just because it's over-the-top does not make it in-offensive. Just ask the people of Kazhakstan. How does it make it right at all to tell a people "don't be offended, look at how over-the-top our charcaterization of you is" when they are the ones being offended? Can you honestly say if Cohen picked an African country that there would not be more outrage over this movie? I get that it shows how ugly America is, and makes us look like jackasses, but no less than Cohen looks like the chief of all jackasses. I am sure he doesn't think people in Kazakhstan live like that, but why parody it at all? "Because it's funny." You can laugh at a mentally handicaped kid just because you think it's funny, it doesn't make it right. Wake up, people... why are you laughing? Expand

The film had an oppurtunity to be smarter, but in This movie was hard to watch, not only because of some of the more rather tastless scenes, but the exposure of some of the dark and disturbing happenings and attitudes in our own country. The film had an oppurtunity to be smarter, but in this day and age where simple-minded humor is depicted because Scary Movie/American Pie types dominate, it fell flat. However, it was still enjoyable, but only as a rental. The film runs only on shock value, and once you know when things are going to happen, the feeling is gone. However, despite several leud scenes and gags about bodily waste, the most disturbing parts of the film were most of the unsuspecting victims. Several scenes (A high class southern dinner party on "Secession Ave"; an antique shop that is pro-Confederate; a rodeo in which much of the audience is depicted as racist; a Senator and Supreme Court Justice at a Pentacostal gathering; several schovanistic college students and expressing their views) show a darker side to American society, as well as show that Americans do not truly have a centralized culture; many of the locations and their populations vary differently, as seen in the film. Unfortunately, the film does not focus on this the way it should, instead, as stated earlier, choosing to stir up some controversey. However, the best thing about works like this is that it can really help to point out people who are unable to grasp the concept. I am not saying everyone who hates this is an idiot, some of you have very good arguments on why the film is stupid (Ray K, Morgan G). However, a lot of you should sit out on this one. And for the record, and I am suprised there are acutally people who do not know this, but Sacha Baron Cohen, the actor that plays Borat, is in fact, Jewish. Also, this movie seems a little far-fetched. Unless this film was shot after each time he paid his bail, it was most certainly staged in order to broadcast Cohen's personal views. Expand

Make no mistake, as a satirical bigot, the Borat character is instantly one of the best comedy performances of all time and this IS one of the funniest & most critical films ever made. For me the real joy was to follow Borat's own personal journey, his realisation that Pammy Anderson was not a virgin was hysterical, the frat boys trying to cheer him up about it quite touching, "Dude, have a beer!". Finally, the way in which the story was resolved with Borat, as we all wish, finding somebody that was willing to love him for who he was, was the final human touch in a world of superhuman stupidity. Congratulations to Mssrs Cohen (& Baynham). They shoot, they score! Expand

A few laughs arise from some of the absurd politically incorrect situations, but mostly it boils down to sub-frat boy humour about racism and fisting, or occasionally incest, with lots of dull interludes where people have pretty lame set-up jokes played on them apparently without their prior knowledge. Sacha Cohen can think on his feet as a comic actor (nothing great, but he improvises pretty well) and the character who played his Kazakhi sidekick was quite good as well. But overall the film is not that funny, and not that interesting to watch, if you want an assessment not imbued with hype. Middle America may not have seen this sort of humour before, but the rest of us have. Anyone interested to see how gauche comedy can be done with a good deal more wit and panache and genuine laughs should track down the videos of the Australian Norman Gunston shows of the 70's and 80's. There were more laughs in the ads for those shows than in the whole of Borat. Expand
