Sure, some of the events have a Hollywood spin to them, and the historical accuracy of the events is questionable, and maybe I am biased in favour of Queen. This movie sometimes made me laugh, sometimes had me in tears, and sometimes times tense up. I was emotionally invested in the characters, and that's often the mark of a good film. Expand

This is a terrific film. I have no idea why the so-called “critics” bag on it, but the music and acting is wonderful. If you are a fan of Queen, it is a must-see, if you are not, it is still worthy of your time.

While it may not be everyone's cup of tea, it is in and of itself, a fantastic movie about the internal yet necessary strife of Queen and the struggles that faced that simultaneously bonded them, yet pushed them apart.

I think the negative critic reviews stem from the fact of.....well we live in a PC word and delving into the topics like that seems to be the necessary trend to make critics happy. While they do admittedly walk on eggshells with this movie in that regard, it is necessary. This is a movie about Queen, not just Freddie Mercury. This is a story about the band and how they became one of the most powerful and influential forces of the culture they inhabited rather than a singular story about Mercury's demons. And in that regard, it is a fantastic movie.

He deserves an Oscar nomination for his performance as the lead singer. He brought real depth to him like he made him seem like an average person that everybody can relate to. Some people can even relate to his struggles that he goes through during the movie. The film also showed you not just the ups of the group but also the downs. Not a lot of biopics will do that and I’m really glad this one did. I also really liked how the film made it seem like you’re a fly on the wall during the events. It took you into their process of making the famous songs that we all know and love to this day. One thing that I want to know is how much time and effort went into making the costumes in this film? Cause all costumes looked like the ones they wore in real life. If they don’t win for best costumes then I’ll be really upset. Now, this film only had a few issues for me. For example, in a few scenes, the pacing was off. They rushed through a bunch of different things that were kind of important to the plot or at least so we can better understand how the songs were created and the main relationship. But I can understand cutting some scenes short seeing how the film is already 2 hours and 15 minutes long. This is just me being nit-picky here but I also wish there more songs in the film. In the end, Bohemian Rhapsody is a pretty good film for people who are fans of Queen, heard of them, or who just want to see a good biopic movie. Expand

Ultimately, the audience is looking for entertainment, at which point review scores are thrown out of the window.

Bohemian Rhapsody, to put it bluntly, is probably my favorite theater experience in many, many years. And I say "experience" because that is very much what the film is about: watching it on Blu-Ray will never capture the magic of watching it alongside fellow filmgoers at a cinema. I'm not a Queen fan, but ever since watching it I find myself singing Queen songs over and over and over. Right from the get go I knew the movie was going to be something special. And it didn't disappoint, and vastly exceeded my (cautious) expectations.

In my experience, these is one of those rare films that only get better and better, and sadly end a bit too soon (the ending of the film, however, is more than appropiate). It could have lasted another hour and I would have eaten that up like a Queen fan at a Queen concert.

Don't let critics fool you. It is a must see, if only because changing your mind months or years from now will have missed you an unique opportunity to watch this on theaters, where this film shines the most.

By the time we get to the grand finale at Wembley, it feels like we're watching the real band, it's that good. This could have been cut shorter and edited a little better, but on the other hand it's rather nice that they took the time to give Freddie's cat all those glorious full-screen close-ups -- especially the purring scene. :) Gotta love a movie that has frequent feline focus moments. TheBohemian Rhapsody is a foot-stomping celebration of Queen, their music and their extraordinary lead singer Freddie Mercury. Freddie defied stereotypes and shattered convention to become one of the most beloved entertainers on the planet. The film traces the meteoric rise of the band through their iconic songs and revolutionary sound. They reach unparalleled success, but in an unexpected turn Freddie, surrounded by darker influences, shuns Queen in pursuit of his solo career. Having suffered greatly without the collaboration of Queen, Freddie manages to reunite with his bandmates just in time for Live Aid. While bravely facing a recent AIDS diagnosis, Freddie leads the band in one of the greatest performances in the history of rock music. Queen cements a legacy that continues to inspire outsiders, dreamers and music lovers to this day. Bohemian Rhapsody hits a handful of high notes, but as an in-depth look at a beloved band, it offers more of a medley than a true greatest hits collection. Expand

And by that it points out again clearly like a reminder that it was one of the best bands that humanity ever had, which it truly was. In a way, the movie catches the grandiose nature of Queen and the rebel and visionary that Freddie was. If the intention of the movie was to reignite the spark of Queen in the people that were contemporary to the band and spark curiosity in the minds of the young generations that did not saw them live and just heard their songs, it definitely succeeded. And yes,I know the haters will say that it may left behind certain details and bla bla but **** that. I saw this movie twice and absolutely loved it! :D Expand

Wanted to take this opportunity to express some of the backlash and negativity from those who dislike this film. Opinions will be opinions, and reading through some critics' reviews, I can certainly see their point sometimes,
but the film literally ends with a song about having a good time. If the audience was entertained, so what if you didn't get the rated-R Queen story you wanted? So what if Freddie Mercury wasn't played by Sacha Baron Cohen? So what if the filmmakers made artistic changes? Will the audience even care? Isn't film supposed to entertain?

Pushing all the film's production issues aside, it can't be understated how much of a feel-good movie this really is. From what I can see, repeat watches will be immensely entertaining.

All the acting here is on point. As you've no doubt heard already Rami Malek gives the film his all as Freddie Mercury. He is the heart and soul of this movie and it wouldn't work without his electrifying performance. It's the little things that define his Mercury: the little facial tics, cracked smiles and so on. He's definitely a shoe-in for that Best Actor.
I was also very impressed by Gwilym Lee as Brian May and Ben Hardy as Roger Taylor. The two of them are great foils to Malek's Mercury and both embody their real-life selves so well.

As for filmmaking, I have one or two small gripes here and there. The editing was choppy at times, (during dialogue scenes) cutting away abruptly after someone has finished his/her lines; to my knowledge it happened twice or thrice. The camerawork is spectacular, lots of close-ups, puts you in the moment. The CGI isn't anything specialbut it gets the job done.

Overall, I really loved Bohemian Rhapsody. The last 30 minutes really did encapsulate the audience in experiencing Queen and Freddie Mercury; and it's been some time since my friends and I left the cinema feeling this good.

The story covers the band's career with the focus on Mercury. As the lead singer, Rami Malek beautifully creates a character who's headstrong, brilliant, charismatic and outrageous (for his day). The narrative follows a traditional arc, covering the band's creative output and success (with all the hits), as well as Mercury's personal struggles. Without ever being emotionally involving or especially original in approach or direction, it still manages to create an interesting biopic. NOTE: In an ironic (and somewhat disguised) role, Mike Myers gets to diss the title song, which was a reference to his performance of the song in "Wayne's World." Expand

Knowing this, I feared that this film would be just another Philadelphia, and I was hesitant to see it. That is until the reviews of Rami Malek's career defining performance were released. To my surprise and delight this film wasn't just about Freddy Mercury's lifestyle nor was it about the way he tragically died. Bohemian Rhapsody is a film that not only parallels the life of Mercury, but it also shows everything that goes into making a successful band. From their humble beginnings to the process of how music is made, what it's inspirations are, what goes into making an album, and finally to the internal conflicts involved with the different personalities in a band. Bohemian Rhapsody illustrates better than any film I have ever seen, what it truly means to be part of a successful band. As for it's star, Mr. Robot's Rami Malek proves in one foul swoop that he is so much more than simply a TV drama star. His performance was far and away the best I've seen all year, and even though we're a long way away from Academy Award nominations, if Malek's name isn't at the top of that list, it will be an unmitigated outrage. Not only does Malek nail the performance, but he is Freddy Mercury right down to his mannerisms. To be honest, if Freddy Mercury were still alive and starred in this film, I don't think even he'd be as convincing as Malek was. The film is truly a performance that will be talked about for decades, but what about the film itself? Being that music is a huge part of my life, I found everything to be very interesting and informative, but others could see it as slow moving and somewhat boring. Some of the choices Bryan Singer made could be questioned, such as showing the entire Live Aid performance, all twenty minutes of it. Yes, it is an important part of the Queen story, but to show the whole thing in a feature film? Overall, I thought this film was terrific and even if you aren't into the music and aren't a fan of Queen, you need to see this film for nothing else than the performance of it's star. Performances like this one are what gives films the title of classic and are talked about and studied forever. Expand

Maybe it lacks a bit of depth, but its playing time (more than 2 hours) just flyes by, and that for me is a sign of a good movie.
The other Queen members are also doing a great job, and the band scenes work very well.
The Live Aid performance is breathtaking (as it was in real life).

You'll find out when and why Farrokh Bulsara changed his name and when he determined he was bi. You'll also learn that when Freddie makes a firm decision, it's final. You'll also see the beginnings of their hallmark title song but interestingly it's never fully played, kind of ironic. In many ways, the film is very similar to A&E's "Behind the Music" documentaries. What it doesn't show, though, is actual footage of Freddie/Queen, nor does it show Freddie's death/funeral, both of which I found a bit disappointing. Expand

Rami Malek's performance and the music alone honestly allow me to look past the film's many flaws (the sanitized feel, the cliches, the blatant falsehoods/omissions in the narrative). Overall, this offering hits mostly right notes in telling its story and enlightening viewers about its central character, and it does so in a way that's entertaining and informative. Rami Malek did a great job portraying Freddie, particularly on stage. He was a larger than life kind of guy and the film portrays that well.

The rest of the cast is excellent and everyone does a fine job in the more dramatic moments of the film.

And well the music stands out of course, It's Queen, what's not to love?

Any Queen fan will get a kick out of this film, whether you are a casual or die hard fan.

It's not perfect, but it works both as an entertaining film and as a study of the legends, gladly in more ways than just a Wikipedia article turned to a movie script type.

Rami Malek gives an Oscarworthy performance as Mercury in this fast stylish film about how Queen came to be and eventually gave a remarkable performance at "Live Aid". It's a film that will mostly be remembered for its terrific studio- and concert scenes that were all loud and entertaining. The concert scenes have probably the best sound mixing out of all music biopics. The hard bass and drum sounds in the cinema definitely made it feel like a real concert. Not to mention that the music itself is some of the best rock ever made and still to this day sounds completely timeless.

But the movie also has to have something else than just music of course. And that's where it kind of succeeds but not really. The scenes stay colorful and stylish for the most part, but I couldn't help but feel like I'm more or less just waiting. The dialogue is pretty good and funny, but the film's pacing is all over the place. Sometimes it felt like the film's moving at goddamn light's speed, cramming all these different events in that are fighting to get screen time. It all stays very surface level since the movie has so much to say and sometimes it skips over events completely. The director also seemed to have some sort of ADHD when it came to the visuals. An interview scene uses a ton of fisheye lens and vibrating camera to the point of it being distracting. It compliments the point of the scene but it does not compliment your eyes. Also there's a concert scene that has these colorful city names flying to the screen, indicating how wide their tour was. That scene is a good way to get epilepsy even if you don't have epilepsy. Although I can safely say that I was never bored. There are a couple more "quiet" moments that are more of a slow burn which was nice, but the majority of the movie is yelling and people talking over each other. Maybe that's what rockstars do.

For those who want an entertaining film of four legends and good timeless music are going to be satisfied. Despite apparent historical inaccuracies, the movie at least feels very "movie like" so it was always fun to watch and especially the "Live Aid" concert scene at the end of the film is a great one.

Not a favourite band of mine by all means, but it is difficult to not understand their importance and appeal. They had some iconic songs (namely "Bohemian Rhapsody", "We Will Rock You", "We Are the Champions" and "Don't Stop Me Now") and Freddie Mercury's immediately recognisable vocals and Brian May's virtuosic guitar playing were always out of this world.

'Bohemian Rhapsody' fascinated me when hearing about it and became most of my most anticipated films for the year. When hearing some negativity for the film, my expectations lowered a little, but saw it anyway because it did look and sound good. It did turn out to be a good decision, it is good to see that others here loved it and don't agree with the mixed critical reception respectfully.

Sure there are clichés (such as what some of the rest of Queen say) , but very few films are not and many are much worse in this regard. Like a lot of biopics, there are inaccuracies that may drive die-hard Queen fans into a frenzy, and the odd factual distortion, but again 'Bohemian Rhapsody' is not the first or worst film to do this and am going to judge it as a film on its own and not on a documentary level.

As a film on its own terms, 'Bohemian Rhapsody' has an awful lot to admire. Getting the issues out of the way, the ones that could have been handled much better was the with the revelation of Freddie Mercury's AIDs diagnosis to the rest of the band, could have been done with more tact and less crass (like saying what it was a consequence of) and revealed too early and at the wrong time, and the implications with the phone ringing off post-taking centre stage that the event was a flop when it actually was a triumph.

Some of the early parts were a touch rushed as well, Mercury's ascent to stardom could have been less breakneck.

However, 'Bohemian Rhapsody' is stylishly film and evokes the period beautifully. As to be expected, the songs are incredible and will be embedded in your brain for a long time, then again it is Queen of course. They are affectionately staged and performed in a way that made me remember what made me appreciate Queen in the first place.

Didn't find the script that simplistic or cliff-notes like, while there is a nice mix of moment of laughter, tension and tears and enough parts that entertained and informed, if not as in depth as it should. The story is never dull and the Live Aid depiction is both rousing and poignant. It's capably directed and while all the performances are fine if underused, it is Rami Malek's outstanding turn as Mercury that will live long in the memory, true to what made Mercury so interesting a person and performer without being an impersonation.

Concluding, impressively done and better than anticipated. 8/10 Bethany Cox

Bohemian Rhapsody covers the formation of Queen and the life of Freddie Mercury up until the Live Aid concert in 1985. I don’t care if half of it is fiction I still loved it.

Starring Rami Malek (Freddie Mercury), Gwilym Lee (Brian May), Ben Hardy (Roger Taylor), and Joseph Mazzello (John Deacon). The trailer just gives you a taste of Malek’s transformation into Freddie Mercury, he portrayed the icon with energy, charisma and showmanship to perfection. The casting was perfect it just needed a better script and a better director. It would have made all the difference and elevated the rest of the film to the standard set by the actors. Bohemian Rhapsody doesn’t really know if it wanted to be the Freddie Mercury story, or the life of Queen. You end up getting a watered down version of both stories, with time constraints it’s not possible to have it all but I still wanted more. More of how Queen wrote their songs, more of Freddie’s life, I found myself wishing this had been a TV mini-series just so I could see more. You also can’t help but feel that a good portion of it has taken some creative liberties and as for giving us an insight into Freddie’s life it doesn’t really get the depth you want. The 12a rating used to bring in a bigger audience is definitely to blame here. In a way a documentary like Amy or Whitney would have been the better way to go but then we’d miss out on Malek’s performance and we can’t have that. With Sacha Baron Cohen dropping out early on due to creative differences and all the other problems that went on behind the scenes Bohemian Rhapsody could have been a disaster. It is getting some harsh reviews due to the supposed historical inaccuracies and yes maybe you’re thinking this review is biased because I like Queen but I was entertained the whole time, I found the chemistry between the main cast to be believable and genuine. The music is spectacular and not only that but the miming was impeccable. Convincing miming isn’t easy apparently just ask the cast of The Greatest Showman. No the film isn’t a masterpiece and it has got some issues but I still loved it. The music and Malek’s performance keep you in the film and during the Live Aid concert it’s electric. You’ll be singing Queen songs for days after seeing Bohemian Rhapsody. Highly recommended, not to be missed and a must see for the Queen fans.

What an experience that ending was, huh ?
Telling the story of the creation of one of the best bands of all time, Queen, from the point of view of Freddie Mercury, facing the difficulties of lack of trust of others and needing the cretivity to develop songs and clips. With time they will need to face the lack of stability of Freddie and find a way to deal with sucess and disagreement. Directed by Bryan Singer and Dexter Fletcher, written by Anthony McCarten.
This movie provided me one of the most unforgettable experiences in a movie theater that i have had in my life, i'm gonna jump right at the ending, where it happens the Live Aid show at the Wembley Stadium, they reproduced almost the whole show at the movie and i gotta say that it was fantastic, one because of how great Rami Malek portrayed Freeddie Mercury, his gestures and grimace was done with maestry, you can watch the real show and then the movie to see how carefully they did it, reminding of details and small things that happened in that day, and two, i was born after the Freddie death, the movie together to my session in the theater made me have the most close sensation to be in a Queen show in my life, it was phenomenal how Rami was able to make the audience go on into the show, the crowd start singing together with the film, clapping together with the audience from the movie, that was an memorable experience for probably everyone in that session.
I gotta say that this ain't no perfect movie, the script does have some flaws, that doesn't compromise it all but it is needed to be mentioned, the structure of the story is very familiar, a ascension from below, than a situation that makes it go down and then an final rise, it isn't innovating and don't present anything new or different in this construction. The script goes in some loop after some moment, where they compose a song, or make a instrumental and then it got cutted into a montage of they playing it in shows and behind the scenes, it is nice because it is queen and the songs are fantastic, but from a narrative point, it is repetitive. The way that they explored Freddie personality was good, i think it was less with words and more with attitudes, showing how he had up and downs, sometimes being kind and generous, in others arrogant and lost, i think they did a good job in here, it could have been better, they could have switch more moments from music montages into this, but still, they didn't forgot about this.
The montage of the music being made were mostly really nice, the making up of Bohemian Rhapsody for me was a lot of fun, funny, connecting us to the movie, the subtlety into some moments just made the movie musically, the We Will Rock You one as well was really nice and easy to make you connect with all that, there were some others that wasn't really interesting to see again, but for sure was a point to add for make it right to the queen list.
Beyond Rami Malek with his great performance, with his maneirisms and subtleties in gesture, way of talk, and some really good monologues with a touch of different emotions and light, we have Gwilym Lee as Brian May, he do a great job, he convinces and looks so much with the original Brian May that it is funny. Ben Hardy giving a lot of personality to Roger Taylor. Lucy Boynton as Mary Austin, she did a very nice job, she was delightful at first, and she totally convinces in her sadness or believing into something, and even in a possibly fear. Mike Myers and Aidan Gillen are also in this movie, and they are very functional, both did a nice job.
I think this movie approaches in a good way the depression, it is like that Jim Carrey quote "I wish that everybody had fame and money for them to see that this isn't the asnwer" i'm not sure if it is exactly like that, but even after Freddie got all that money and all that fame, he still nedeed to give his partys to a bunch of people that he don't even know, doing that most likely just to feel something, i could feel the lost in some of those moments in the movie.
I think they did have approached the sexuality of Mercury in a wholesome way, i don't know exactly how the story goes, but in here it was natural, it was simple and good, they did it with calm, a little by a little.
This movies ended up being more a tribute to the band and it's great music than anything else, but considering this, they did a very good job, i agree that they could have explore different aspects, involve more mental subjects in the script and morals, but in here they did a good job with what they intended to.

I took no offense to that and enjoyed the movie for what it is: A celebration of Freddie Mercury and Queen. Rami Malek does a really good job playing Freddie even though he exaggerates Mercurys slight speech impairment a bit too much. Music biopics are arguably more entertaining than documentaries since they tell a (largely) true story about the subject matter while following a cinematic movie formula. However, this happens to be the biggest weakness for them, as historyMusic biopics are arguably more entertaining than documentaries since they tell a (largely) true story about the subject matter while following a cinematic movie formula. However, this happens to be the biggest weakness for them, as history is often rewritten and edited for the sake of dramatic effect. Since this review is overall positive, I will begin with the negatives by addressing historical inaccuracies as one of the films biggest weakness. For Bohemian Rhapsody, the same issue occurred during the writing of the script, which made many of the dramatic elements seem overacted and unnecessary. Many moments of Freddie’s real life are implemented into the story to add tension and drama to the relationship among the band members when in actuality there was not nearly the same level of tension. While largely paying homage to the legend, many parts of the film make him look like the stereotypical **** diva superstar that was not the complete truth. Another aspect of weakness that I found with the film was the dramatic “cheese”, moments added to add drama to make the film more like a film. Even with the largely amazing performance from Rami Malek (more on him later), there were moments where his dramatic acting fell short and the scene came across as almost laughable. While I do have more to say on his performance and the performances of the other cast members, I do not believe that Malek deserves an Oscar nomination.

With that said, the film also seemed to rush through the rise of Queen as a band and their ascent to fame. It takes a matter of twenty minutes or so for the band to go from starting off to signing with John Reid (Aiden Gillen, did good), which was a big deal since Reid was the manager for Sir Elton John. Bohemian Rhapsody wasn’t able to use this formula the best way nor did the movie suffer as a whole, but I certainly would’ve liked to see more scenes centering on the band’s rise. Overall, the film “needed” to add drama and fake history to add to the cinematic effect and fill in the runtime. While these aspects may have hurt Bohemian Rhapsody from being truly amazing, the music and performances were amazing.

I must bestow praise to all those involved with camerawork, film editing, and set designers for their amazing artistic input that brought the movie to life. Every music biopic that I have seen has made me appreciate the music and the artist(s) more. I have felt a connection with these films that have made them worth investing time into over and over again. All previous biopics, however, pale in comparison to the magic of Queen that Bohemian Rhapsody brought to life with such realism. The settings, costumes, and perfect recreation of the band’s performances allowed this film to emerge from its weaknesses to become a truly enjoyable experience. It also set this film apart from other biopics by adding a unique style and flair that exemplifies what Queen as a band embraced back in the day. It’ll send chills through your spine and maybe inspire you to become the next great music artist, because God knows we need much help fixing music (except rap).

The performances by the cast members themselves were amazing across the board, from the band members of Queen to the supporting characters of the story. The highlights were Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury (obviously), who prevails through some bad moments by nailing all the movements and mannerisms of Mr. Mercury. The live performance scenes in particular were perfectly executed, as the lip-syncing and Mercury theatrics would make you believe that Rami was Freddie himself. I was also impressed with Gwilym Lee’s excellent turn as guitarist Brian May, achieving the perfect recreation of May from accent to acting according to the scene’s tone and objective. One more performance I would like to highlight was Lucy Boynton as Mary Austin, who I believe brought the most emotional complexion among the cast, being able to properly add drama to an otherwise lighthearted film.

As with all films, Bohemian Rhapsody is not without flaws; there are moments of overly-dramatic elements, and some of the actual history has been rewritten to add to this effect. These flaws should only be in a made-for-TV movie on Lifetime Network, but certainly not the film’s positive qualities. Bolstered by the set design, amazing cinematography, editing, and cast performances, the film is certainly an achievement for music biopics. It brings one of the greatest songwriters and vocalists to life, and gives audiences a movie centered on a band who made music for the people. Critics can say what they want, but ask the fans of rock and they’ll place Queen among the greatest acts of all time. The film brought them to life in astounding fashion, and has allowed to world to gain a greater appreciation for art that we may never encounter again.

On the one hand, It is an incredibly entertaining movie with fantastic performances and a, needless to say, fantastic soundtrack. The ending made me shed a tear, and I left the theater with a sense of joy, and made me want to rediscover Queen's music all over again. On the other hand, some timeline issues and historical inaccuracies made me question some of the decisions taken in this movie. I did react to certain songs being played before they were chronologically made in the movies timeline, and certain decisions to sacrifice historical accuracy for the purpose of storytelling were questionable. However, these things didn't take away from my full enjoyment of the movie. It isn't an accurate and truthful biopic about Freddie Mercury and his private life, instead it's a joyful celebration of Queen, their music and their legacy. It tells the story with great humor and on many occasions, I was dying of laughter for some of the unexpected jokes in this film. It is a wild ride and a fun show, just like Freddie would have wanted it to be.

Full of emotions, impeccable performances, good direction ... BUT, many factual errors, which for fans, may bother a little (or a lot), nor does it seem that the film had Brian May and Roger Taylor as consultants.

It's not a masterpiece by any means but it plays very well on the nostalgia factor and it's a good viewing experience. It's very good for what it is. I just have to say that, if you don't like Queen, you're probably not going to like this. Even if you're neutral and just not familiar with the band, it'll be pretty hard for you to get into this movie.

Bohemian Rhapsody

Live Aid Score(20/20) They kicked out the jams, no doubt.
6 Minute Single Score(20/20) Way to stick to your guns guys.
Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll Score(20/20) Unlike some movies(I Walk the Line, Ray) this movie realizes that there’s more to the story than these struggles. They’ve got their place but the whole movie doesn’t have to be about them.
Brian May Score(5/10) He drew some exquisite tones from his guitar. It seems to me that should have been a bigger part of the story.
I’m in Love with My Car Score(0/5) “Told my girl I’ll have to forget her, Rather buy me a new carburetor” That’s a great lyric and was better than the dissing it got as a possible single release
Kansas Score(0/5) Totally biased perspective here. Ever since I saw “A Star is Born” I’ve been thinking we need a movie about Kansas. They made a career of doing songs like Bohemian Rhapsody.
Somebody to Love Score (20/20) Freddie seeks what we all do, to love and be loved. May we all choose wisely.

85/100

But I really enjoy this movie and I think it is pretty great. Rami Malek does a tremendous job portraying the late great Freddie Mercury. I do agree that it is pretty much a movie of Queen's greatest hits which is why I really liked it. Watching this movie and listening to the greats such as We Will Rock You, Hammer to Fall, Radio Gaga, Fat Bottomed Girls, etc. is part of the experience. An issue I had with the movie is during the live aid sequence, Rami Malek's performance looks a little strange. He moves a little robotic like, especially when he opens his mouth. A problem I have with it is not only does it look strange, but it also looks like he's not even singing. I understand he wasn't actually singing during that sequence, my problem is that it doesn't look like he was really singing. Overall, I really enjoyed the film, it has some issues, but I think the performance by Rami Malek, and the hits by Queen are definitely the selling point. Expand

No biopic is 100% accurate or covers EVERYTHING but this one was relatively entertaining & informative. I thought the focus on the whole band would be boring but it wasn't. The actors sure do look true to who they're portraying. And I like how they showed the band's range by doing the whole "Queen is whatever we say it is" thing. They were one of the few rock bands to branch out & incorporate opera, disco...videos in drag in the conservative '80s... and they definitely paid the price for it with critics (especially American ones). There's quite a bit of editing of Freddie's drug use/erratic moods, and it's a shame they couldn't show more of his final years (even though it's terribly sad). Like it or not, the AIDS epidemic played a central role in not only Freddie's life but that entire era. But the actors were REALLY great. Can't stress that enough. If you want a strictly chronological/historical account of Queen or Freddie, there are tons of documentaries out there. This one is for the casual fan who wants to get her feet wet & enjoy some classic chunes. Expand

However, it is a bit by the numbers in terms of a biopic and the story and pacing felt rushed at times, but Rami Malek's highly energetic and fully committed performance as Mercury greatly carries much of the film to make up for that. He's definitely what makes the film the most fun to watch. Overall, like I said, it felt pretty standard for a biopic, but that doesn't mean I didn't have any fun with it, and even if you're not a huge Queen fan, there's no denying how catchy and fun most of their songs are, so there's plenty of great things to enjoy in this film. However, I think the movie does a great job of telling Freddie Mercury's and the band's story. While watching the movie, I found myself cheering for the band and hoping for their success, even though I'm not really a Queen fan. I think Bryan Singer was trying to make a film that was fun to watch, and he succeeded admirably. His direction is quite good. Perhaps people were looking for a darker, more serious examination of Freddie Mercury's and the band's story. Also, perhaps critics derided the movie because of Bryan Singer's questionable conduct in his private life. Regardless, if you are looking for a fun rock biopic, I highly recommend Bohemian Rhapsody. Oh yeah, one last thing - Rami Malek is fantastic! Expand

There are curious chronological flaws which must be intended but are not ultimately acceptable, and like other rock band biopics such as "Straight Outta Compton" this liberally rips off Oliver Stone's "The Doors" in formative origin plotting, style and even directly steals an entire scene! Truly entertaining, fast paced and with a kick that will leave you happy in your movie seat theater. Rami delivers in my opinion an award wining performance here. He is the heart and soul of the movie. However, we're talking about Freddie here, and if we we're talking about Freddie then i must say the movie comes a bit short. The music is there, it will make you jump from your seat when "tum tum ta tum tum ta" starts just like Queen's music does, but when it comes to Freddie then you feel like something is missing. The most outrageous, eccentric, exciting musical genius of all time fails short in the movie and due to, perhaps, Singer's lack of balls in delivering a more crude, raw, real version of Freddie, because Rami was perfect. Still, I think anything would fall short when speaking of Freddie so let's just enjoy!! Expand
