It has a good cast, an interesting story with a relatable moral dilemma and a strong villain that could be a great hero if things were different. After a flashback to the past the story deals with T’Challa becoming the next king of Wakanda. This is not granted as he has to fulfill a ceremony and not all groups / tribes in Wakanda are satisfied with the status quo. As sidenote: Wakanda is pretending to be an average African country but in truth they are far technological superior than anyone else and this is because of their Vibranium metal (Fictional metal with amazing properties far stronger than titanium). Meanwhile a strange soldier named Killmonger has a plan that can change everything. I am sorry to be vague here to avoid spoilers. The story is amazing. It deals with sins of the past, what makes a leader and responsibilities. Also the villain is really strong. His motives are understandable, he is intimidating and awesome. Like I said he could be a great hero if his past was different. For the actors we got a strong cast. Chadwick Boseman is the perfect choice for T’Challa. Michael B. Jordan as Killmonger is equally good and a favorite choice after Thanos for best MCU villain. I think I shorten it a bit a praise the whole cast and team behind the screen as it is well earned. The costumes, set and special effects were excellent too. Overall I think the praise is deserved and I also give a 10/10. Would recommend it for all MCU fans and even outside for the story as it is relatable. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A terrific addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
This movie brings to the viewers subjects never seen before in the whole Marvel franchise. And it manages to be refreshing despite some same predictable old codes. Tackling some subjects did surprise me but it was made a certain finesse and strength that let the movie breathe without making it too serious or awkward. It gets political without making this fact the whole center of the film.

The soundtrack is the best I've ever heard in a Marvel movie. In addition to that it competes with others movie soundtracks that I may consider as perfect. Ludwig Göransson did an amazing job from A to Z with these orchestral fusions of trap and traditional drums to symbolize the subtle mix of high-level technology and old rituals that characterize Wakanda. Drums may sound a bit repetitive from time to time but I found that they evolve to some intensity in accordance with the pace of the movie. Of course how can't I mention that these pure tracks are embellished by Kendrick Lamar's typical touch and mastery. If few songs did appear in the final cut, they still remain as notable as powerful.

That pace remains a black point in my opinion since 'Black Panther' asks more than two hours to showcase multiple plots reuniting many characters in different timelines and with various objectives. More focus should have been helpful to me as the first half sees the storyline struggling to get going while the second half focuses mainly on fights that enventually interrupt the valuable and so far very interesting development of many characters.

CGI and special effects are another questionable aspect sinc I found there was few to be noticed. T'Challa's armor don't evoke much to me, starships are a bit ugly, weapons feel like toys and some scenes let us easily imagine the green screens. Fortunately these effects were very good on environment, skies and towns. Colors are not to my taste as I found the look of some artefacts too shiny some times (as the necklace) or just to plain and forgettable (as the hand of Andy Serkis).

Michael B. Jordan & Chadwick Boseman's acting skills are quite impressive, even if the last shares more his iconic face and prestance rather than actual acting skills. The presence of so many powerful and involved women is truly agreeable and definitely bring some fresh air in the MCU we know nowadays. In extension to that, the casting is really solid.

What I especially love is the evolution of characters that are moved by meaningful and meaningful values and desires, which tends to make us easily understand why they act or think the way the do.

Thank you for that and RIP Chadwick Boseman.

It breaks so many barriers and records simultaneously that it would be foolish not to notice that it's more than just a marvel movie:it's a seat at the table. This Oscar nominated (and winning) superhero story has a majority black cast ,set mainly in a highly evolved hidden African nation. It's brave inclusion of a reworked African dialogue, accents and afro-futurism is allow for a somewhat clichéd tale of a kings defense of his throne, family and country in the face of a righteous threat. Sure the story does rely on the marvel ordinary story formula but it does so in a never before seen context. Expand

Just like in Black Panther. The question is always how is the story and the characters and they are good here: The story around Wakanda, their history and politics are on a mature level (not like Spider-man for example). In addition it is interesting to see different settings than USA and London again, here we have Africa and South Korea.
The villain is also a topic in Marvel movies and here he is well written, not perfect, but good enough and not one-sided.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Black Panther is a true masterpiece and has a finesse to it that we haven’t seen in any Marvel movie period since Spider-Man 2. The film pushes the race barrier of superhero films to much success, considering that in the whole movie there are only two substantive white actors. It’s filled with visual splendor and takes us on a fantastic journey into the technologically advanced nation of Wakanda, which was teased in the mid-credits scene of Civil War. The cultural approach of the movie is unique and not something other MCU installments have really done. Rather than simply take us on a tour through Wakanda, the filmmakers walk us through its history and how it came to be what it is at the time of the movie, which gives us an amazing lens through which to view this nation that we’re being introduced to. The action, which is superb, also has strong cultural roots, giving us fights that are intended to happen and unavoidable in a way that they’re not in other movies. Black Panther has some hilarious dialogue that is supplemented by the phenomenal cast performances, and makes some references of its own that teenage viewers are sure to understand. Killmonger is one of the best villains that we’ve seen in the MCU because he’s given a great backstory, some truly emotional moments, and actually convinces the hero to change his mind and take actions based on that that will forever alter Wakanda as a nation and civilization. T’Challa even tries to help Killmonger at the end of the film, creating an amazing hero-villain dynamic that we don’t see everyday. Despite having no powers of his own, Killmonger is a very intimidating and convincing villain and sets a possibly unbeatable bar for future villains and big-baddies. Through all of this, Black Panther is a superhero film and icon that can be looked at through multiple different perspectives: blockbuster entertainment, culture, academics, technology, etc. Black Panther has some of the best of what Marvel has to offer and I strongly recommend it to anyone who is a Marvel fan in general. It was only after the release of that movie that I saw everyone talking about it all the time, and that I had to watch all the movies before I could start watching IW. I had to watch all the movies so that I could catch up in time before Endgame. I had heard a little bit about some random guy named Black Panther getting snapped out by Thanos, but I really didn't care because I had never even heard about this guy my whole life. So after all the movies I had watched, Black Panther was next. I wasn't really interested in seeing this movie because it seemed so much culturally different, but I thought that if I had watched Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man without having known anything about them before, so I can do the same here also.

The first thing that strikes differently about this movie is that this is not exactly a character origin story. Black Panther was already previously introduced in Captain America: Civil War where his father had died, but he was never explained as to why or how he's the superhero. This is the movie which finally explains that part. The world thinks Wakanda is a poor country while in reality it is a powerhouse of vibranium. T'Challa is a leader and the saviour of the people. The king of Wakanda gets to be the Black Panther, for which they have to take the heart shaped herb that helps them acquire knowledge from all the previous Black Panthers.

Other than the superhero himself, N'Jadaka ie Killmonger believes he is the rightful ruler of the kingdom, because of which he challenges T'Challa. From Killmonger's point of view he should be the king because he wants to take revenge fromT'Challa's father T'Chaka for killing his father. The movie spends a good deal over it, such that it allows the viewer to sympathise with him, even though his actions are clearly wrong. Finally N'Jadaka beats T'Challa in the ceremonial fight which allows him to be the Black Panther instead. There are multiple moral dilemmas faced by the protagonists, as to whether let their kingdom be governed by someone who lets his emotions get the better of him or dare to overthrow their own king.

The moral dilemma is actually a very important point in the story, since in the scene where T'Challa, Shuri and Okoye are talking about this, Okoye says it's her duty to serve whoever sits on the throne no matter how the person is. That is a stark contrast from both T'Challa and N'Jadaka, since both of them see beyond their rules to see whom and what to fight for. The Wolf Tribe led by M'Baku is ready to help Black Panther, in spite of having previously faced a humiliating defeat by T'Challa in the Black Panther ceremony. While T'Challa makes allies along the way, N'Jadaka eliminates his allies.

Although the CGI was a bit off in some places, overall it was good. Since I had no idea what I was heading for, I didn't expect to see a Wakanda having such a high technology (I didn't watch any trailer before watching the movie or read any comics). The fight scenes were also pretty fun to watch, except for the Busan one. I didn't like it for some reason which I myself don't know. The acting was also very good. This movie absolutely deserved the Oscar for the costume design. I think it has the best interpretation of the suit as depticted in the comics (only Iron Man comes a close second since it's not as comicbook accurate).

Although this movie is not one of my favourites, it did leave some huge impacts on me. First of all, I have purchased almost all Black Panther comics. Secondly I have become a lot more open to watching movies from Africa, since now I won't be afraid of not understanding anything. And thirdly, it's something I will always remember Chadwick Boseman for. Rest in peace hero, you did a pretty great job.

Funnily enough, everyone says this is the first black marvel superhero movie, which my cousin of all people pointed down. Saying the first one was actually Blade, and I found that very interesting. I wonder if the reason not more people pointed that out like he did is because Blade may have failed to resonate with a wider audience like Black Panther did, and so people assume Black Panther has been the first.

Be that as it may, I'll keep this brief. The story, characters, art direction and soundtrack are pretty good! I thought the cheesy jokes may have done the movie a disservice and the movie at large failed to engage me all that much tbh. I like it for what it is regardless.

'Black Panther', the 18th MCU film, is very good. I really like the world building of Wakanda, as well as the cinematography and costume design. The cast are, as expected, excellent as well.

Chadwick Boseman is terrific as T'Challa, as I knew he would be based on the glimpse we see of him in 2016's 'Captain America: Civil War'. He is the best actor here, but Danai Gurira runs him close. I'm a huge fan of Gurira's due to her performances in 'The Walking Dead' so knew I'd rate her here too, she's fun to watch - it's cool to see her weapon-wielding once again.

Elsewhere, Lupita Nyong'o is good and so is Letitia Wright; she's great in 2015's 'Urban Hymn', which I had seen her in previously. It's a fairly stacked cast, with the likes of Forest Whitaker, Andy Serkis, Daniel Kaluuya and Michael B. Jordan also appearing; Jordan's character isn't the best, but he himself is more than solid.

It's the first Marvel film with a predominantly black cast and a black director. I also like a lot the African themes and motifs throughout the movie because I had never something like this before. This movie was a nice breath of fresh air. And it goes without saying the action scenes are amazing, especially the car chase scene. Killmonger is one of the best villains in the MCU because he's sympathetic to a degree. He makes certain good points, just like Thanos. And when you compare him to someone like Malekith from Thor 2 (I had to Google the name because I couldn't remember it) who is simply evil for the sake of it, it's obvious Killmonger is a good villain.

Chadwick Boseman is a fantastic Black Panther and I can hardly imagine anyone else in this role. I was so sad when I heard he had passed away. Rest in Power. Also, all these racists who spammed 0/10 reviews for political reasons because the movie features black people are laughably pathetic.

I wouldn't consider it a masterpiece, but for a Marvel movie, this one truly stands out amongst the rest. The fight scenes, the story, the soundtrack, and the characters make this completely different than any other superhero film I've watched. The movie visually looks amazing and the CGI is not as bad as I thought it would be. I love how they illustrated Wakanda and all the tribes and people within it. The characters are very likable and the actors who portray them did a great job. Although, like almost every other film, it does have its flaws. Despite the cringy jokes, some scenes and dialogue feel unnecessary. As if you took them out, it would make no difference or even matter to the original cut. I'll be honest. I am not the target audience of this movie, although I am a HUGE fan of comic book movies. I am not the target audience of this movie, although I am a HUGE fan of comic book movies. As much as I liked it, there is a group of people who identify with it on a much deeper level than I do. Because of that, I'm sure there are things that I miss or do not understand the cultural significance of. However, as a purely comic book entry of the MCU, I thoroughly enjoy the character of Black Panther and the supporting cast. It is great to see Andy Serkis as something other than a CGI character. I have much respect for Chadwick Boseman and Letitia Wright, especially. Michael B Jordan makes a great sympathetic "villain" who begins the movie much more sympathetic than he ends it. What I mean is that he starts as someone whose intentions are understandable but ends as nothing more than another movie tyrant. Still, his performance is fantastic!
So, you may wonder, "Why just a 7 if you like it so much?" My biggest frustration is one major scene and one major addition in that one major scene: the rhinos. The computer animation on them is so frustrating compared to other digitally inserted characters in other films that I cringe every time I watch it. I don't know why it grinds me so much, but there is something about them that makes me want to stop watching right then and there! I know it seems petty, but those rough-looking cartoon beasts really stand out against all the amazing character development and awesome fight choreography that takes place before and after it.
Still, I would pick an MCU movie or many other movies most days of the week!

The acting from Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Letitia Wright, Danai Gurira, Lupita Nyong'o, Winston Duke, Martin Freeman, and Andy Serkis was outstanding. The costumes were phenomenal especially Chadwick Boseman's, Angela Bassett's, Letitia Wright's, Michael B. Jordan's, and Danai Gurria's. The sets were excellent especially Wakanda. The soundtrack was terrific especially the songs All the Stars and Pray for Me. The visual effects were great but sometimes they weren't to real looking. This is a A+ movie. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Now that I'm far distanced from all the social media vitriol circulating from both fans and critics of this film (which in its time was horribly damaging and hurt a lot of friendships and race-relations, let's not forget), I can view this film a bit more objectively. For me, this is one of the better films of the MCU. It has a complex villain with motivations that aren't cliche, and the film touches on real-world issues that are relevant. That said, they do this rather clumsily at times and there are moments that really hurt the film's maturity level and could easily alienate viewers, as they have some jokes and comments in there that really feel like cheap jabs at white people from the filmmakers. The joke "another broken white boy for me to fix. this should be fun" presents a double-standard where if it was a person of another race and their race was mentioned like this, it would offend people. Maybe they should've just stuck to "American" instead of "white boy". It's demeaning to call a grown man a "white boy". I don't think the MCU is an appropriate venue for racial humor. I might have laughed at this in an adult-targeted film. I can take a joke, but in a film that is seen by general audiences this feels misplaced and irresponsible. Same can be said for when one of the protagonists calls the white guy a "colonizer", and that horribly cringey scene where the white guy gets censored by Wakandans barking like apes who will not allow him to speak. It's just plain weird and doesn't even really make sense in the context of the movie.

Aside from that though, I feel like the film has a lot of heart, poses challenging questions, gives, for the most part, reasonable answers, and has a lot of visual wonder and charm (though the quality of art and effects definitely wavers between astonishing and made-for-TV looking). A good film in the MCU, but with some problematic moments, but mostly good. One of the bigger weaknesses may be that the title character is a bit bland in comparison to some of the film's other more vibrant characters, but it does set up his sense of duty and morality, and shows his perseverance, so maybe we'll see some more growth from him in the next one.

I thought it was a joke! This is a good movie, I won't deny that, it actually has some social commentary about racism that superhero movies don't really have too often, it's competetively shot, it has some cool action scenes, solid acting for almost all the cast, but almost every other aspect was just bland and pretty standard, like the writing, the cinematography and the score (Many people seem to love the score but I thought it wasn't anything special even if it's good).
It has that basic superhero movie formula, the movie felt pretty predictable at times and the message about racism, while it's good to see a superhero movie talk about this topics, it's really standard and generic, nothing that changed my mind or anything.
And the CGI, oh my god it's maybe the worst CGI that a MCU movie has ever had, there was CGI that felt straight out of a PS2 game, it's shocking.

I mean this is a pretty competent movie, a pretty good one, but why is this nominated? Why was this nominated for best picture over other way better movies like Eight Grade or First Man, or even a superhero movie like Spider-Verse, in that case, Spider-Verse could've been nominated for that award! But nope, let's give it (the nomination) to Black Panther.
When I saw it I liked it but I never thought it was Oscar-worthy and I was shocked when I saw the reviews.

Just that it wasn't worth all the hype. The only thing it has to be a unique MCU film would be that it had was the majority of people from black community as its cast members. I am not criticizing that, but that's NOT a legit reason to hype it up so much. .
.
Good : It was whatever the first Thor movie couldn't be. In other words, it was "Thor" (2011) on Wakanda and better. It has some fantasy elements regarding the "Black Panther formula" and at the same time, it is quite of a sci fi too, and on the sideline it's also a crime film. These themes hold together very cohesively and make the movie a solid piece of art, on the whole. For the first time in an MCU movie, a villain was good. Killmonger is probably my second favorite MCU villain till date, the first one being Thanos. That character was well written to say the least. We knew where he was coming from, his motives, what he is up to and why. He is the best part of this movie. Many of the heist and crime film vibes it had was very interesting in the scenario they set up for this movie. The character interactions and the dynamic between various characters were good. Some funny scenes and dialogues land properly (while some don't, it's an MCU movie, after all). While watching this film, you won't want to skip any part of it, even though, in the end, you might be saying, "is that it?! Dafuq?!!" But most importantly, it gives you a really good introduction to Black Panther. We can get behind this hero for good. The character arc they give to him is excellent. .
.
Mixed : A lot of it feels like parts of Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy. The "sci fi" part feels quite like the stuff going on between Batman and Fox. The establishment of the character of Killmonger was (in a subtext) similar to how we got introduced to The Joker in "The Dark Knight" or to Bane in "The Dark Knight Rises". Also, some scenes are quite similar to interrogation scenes of "The Dark Knight". I am not saying that it was a ripoff of Nolan's films. It might be the same in the source material they adapted, I don't know. But noticing those themes being dealt in a similar way, makes it kind of a mixed bag. The movie, also, apparently "kills" off a character, which doesn't feel so compelling because they were to be back in future films (which had already been announced or were seen in the trailer of Infinity War). Not saying that the way they killed off the character was bad. If we didn't know about him being back in Infinity War, it would've made a solid impact. But, we know about him being back. So, it wasn't much interesting. .
.
Bad : Many fights and scenes in the film are super clichéd. Not only that you can predict what will happen, you can even predict what kind of a dialogue will close that scene, and what will be the immediate consequence for the character who gave that piece of dialogue. The third act of the movie was just plain generic third act of a superhero movie with a lot of clichés and dumbed down "Captain America: Civil War" conditions with some of kind of "Lord of the Rings" vibe. .
.
Conclusion : "Black Panther", for me, was some kind of a mixed bag. It was surely overhyped, but wasn't so bad of an overhyped movie. On the whole, a solid entertainer. Not something like Infinity War or Iron Man or Avengers or Civil War that will be talked for a long time. .

While the idea of this character seemed great on paper, specially looking at the performance of Chadwick Boseman in Civil War, the movie fails of a hero that doesn't shine as bright as the antagonist of the story.

This is one of the rare MCU movies where the villain is more charismatic than the main character.

T'Challa in this movie is surprisingly bland and the character development that it went through in Civil War seems to not be there anymore.

Weak CGI effects and the glorification of what is essentially an absolutist monarchy based on a quasi-medieval society with Vibranium-based tech doesn't portray Wakanda as a "good country". The main story of the movie acknowledges this with a villain more empathetic to the viewer than the nobles of Wakanda.

When you see Black Panther, you are treated to an all star cast who brings their game that's better than A. Chadwick Boseman kills it at T'Challa, and is able to bring the emotional moments of the movie to the forefront. Michael B. Jordan should be praised for not only playing the second/third best Marvel villain, but for playing a complex character that brings the alagory of racism and hatred to life. I would say things about the rest of the cast, but you should honestly take my word for it as trying to say anything else would spoil the movie for you. The music from both Kendrick Lamar and composer Ludwig, fill the atmosphere and embrace African culture to the fullest extent possible, provide a soundtrack that is onpar with Guardians. The cinematography is amazing as a whole, but that is what you should expect from cinematographer Rachel Morrison. Everything in Wakanda feels authentic and embraces the vibrant culture of African people and does so in a way that is aethestically pleasing, and true to who the people are. It's unique and yet familiar. Plus, they don't hammer in a message so hard like how you'd expect a film like this to be. It takes its time with telling a story in a way that the message can unfold naturally to the viewer, rather than Whiplashing like J.K. Simmons. And all this is made possible thanks to writer/director Ryan Coogler, who has given the best stand alone Marvel movie since Guardians. Without him, this movie would not have worked the way it did. I love Black Panther, and I personally don't think you have to be black or white to love it too. Because if a movie can just stick with you after you left, and you'd be willing to watch it, then watch it again, then that's all that really matters. I love this movie and I hope you will too. Wakanda Forever!

Marvel’s Black Panther will forever hold a place in Academy Awards history as the very first superhero movie to be nominated for Best Picture. It is also only the second comic book movie to be nominated for Best Picture—the first was Skippy in 1931 (which was my favorite of the Best Picture nominees for that year). Black Panther is also notable for being a major studio movie that features a predominantly black cast and crew. It was the highest grossing film of 2018, received critical acclaim, and now has been nominated for 7 Academy Awards. Despite all of that, Black Panther is most notable of all for standing out amongst the din and spectacle other superhero movies and giving us memorable characters and a new and exciting country: Wakanda.

The fictional African nation of Wakanda is a feast for the eyes. The costumes for its people blend traditional African motifs with a sleek futuristic sensibility with creative and impressive results; it’s no surprise costume designer Ruth E. Carter has received an Oscar nomination for her work. Production designers Hannah Beachler and Jay Hart have received much deserved Oscar nominations for creating the look of Wakanda. The visuals of both interiors and exteriors are exciting and dazzling. The design for the snowy mountain homeland of Wakanda’s reclusive Jabari tribe alone deserves an Academy Award. Most of all the production design creates a high-tech futuristic place that feels like it could be a part of the real world.

Of course, Black Panther is woven into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The African superhero first appeared in Captain America: Civil War, where the king of Wakanda was killed by terrorists making his son, Prince T’Challa, unexpectedly king. T’Challa also became the Black Panther, protector of Wakanda, aided by a super suit and magical potion that gives him super strength. The brilliance of the screenplay by director Ryan Coogler and co-writer Joe Robert Cole is it does not require you to have seen other Marvel superhero movies to enjoy or understand the characters or plot. This might be the most accessible film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe aside from the first Iron Man back in 2008.

Chadwick Boseman plays T’Challa/Black Panther and he does a good job of playing not just a believable superhero but also a believable leader of a country. Though T’Challa is the main character, the stand out characters and performances are in the supporting cast. Michael B. Jordan as Killmonger is easily the most memorable and interesting villain of any Marvel movie. Killmonger is a living breathing person (not just a big CGI bully like Thanos) with understandable though not admirable motivations. T’Challa’s allies are the mostly female and all badass warriors and scientists of Wakanda. Letitia Wright plays Shuri, T’Challa’s younger sister. She is the Q to his James Bond, inventing cutting-edge, high-tech gadgets and since they’re siblings the characters have a lively back and forth banter. Lupita Nyong’o is T’Challa’s ex-girlfriend and Wakanda’s chief spy, Nakia. Danai Gurirais Okoye, Wakanda’s tough and unflappable general. Martin Freemanis good comic relief as a fish-out-water CIA agent awestruck by Wakanda.

I think part of the reason for Black Panther’s success with audiences and critics and the reason it doesn’t feel like just another superhero movie is its story follows the template of a James Bond movie rather than a superhero movie. There is even a memorable action scene set in a posh casino followed by a car chase. The rest of the action sequences are not as jarring or bombastic as those from The Avengersmovies. You can follow what is happening and where and who it is happening to; you can actually be engaged in the action. Moreover, there’s reason for the action. Killmonger’s sincere but villainous motivations and T’Challa’s dilemma in being both a protector and a leader add substance to superhero spectacle

Visually pleasing really well directed and shot action scenes, and amazing futuristic vibe to it. The actors did a decent job on their roles. Also the plot was pretty local and did not met the standards of today's marvel universe's huge roles but it did fill in one chapter which was needed for the future movie. The music in action scenes and tension ones was really great, also the plot had a taste of traditional African traditions which was breath of fresh air in the MCU. The humor was above average and it got a few really hilarious moments as well, due to it's humor. But the real show steal-er was the plot's simplicity yet interesting. Which made for immersion and entertainment at the highest value. It's a really fun movie to watch and it does not fault in the pacing of the plot and unfolding the story. Overall it's a very good movie and a great piece of the MCU. Expand

Quite slow to start, lots of heavy handed political messaging. The high tech African kingdoms is a well realised mix of tech and African fashions and customs, but at the same time came over as being a big cliched. As usual with these kind of movies the villains were a lot more interesting than the good guys. The CGI was quite bad in places, particularly the boss battle at the end. It was ok overall, but not much better than that. Quite long as well. Not as good as wonder woman. Expand

It is one of the best Marvel films and a fresh instalment into the cinematic universe. However, it still falls short in many aspects that the average blockbusters and Marvel properties always do... The writing is a bit better than usual, in that it has one character with purpose and a satisfying arc, and certain story elements carry more weight than usual. Still, the film falls into the usual trap of inconsistent characters, logic that the film explains but then contradicts all the time, and a predictable narrative with poor pacing, evolution and too much lazy exposition. The costumes and soundtrack were better than expected, but the visual effects are terrible considering the standard of recent films in the franchise. The direction overall was slightly more aware than average but felt bland at times with a lack of technique and intelligence. Most of the performances were competent and the score was surprisingly good. Overall, it is somewhat better filmmaking and writing than most Marvel films, but was elevated by the politics and social influence it had. Expand

The best things for this film are a strong antagonist and a support character (Best disney princess?). It is decent, but definitely not the best Marvel work.

One of the only Marvel movies that do more than simply carry a CGI filled story. Black Panther does what very few superhero films do, and that is creating a grounded world with heroic elements in a tasteful manner.

Director Ryan Coogler’s addition to the MCU received acclaim from critics and audiences alike, as well as breaking an impressive $1 billion at the worldwide box office. Perhaps key to the success of Black Panther is the way that it thrills both fans of the superhero flick but also transcends the usual bounds of the genre, in its characters, design and themes. This is a film that subverts the typical Marvel formula, something which is long overdue.
Chadwick Boseman comfortably leads the film as the eponymous hero, venerable monarch by day and suit-sporting vigilante by night. T’Challa rules the nation of Wakanda, a futuristic and technologically advanced utopia shielded by a mask as a third-world nation. T’Challa’s ex-lover, Nakia (played on expected brilliant form by Lupita Nyong’o) fights the case for Wakanda’s moral duty to share the truth of their wealth; this is one of many surprisingly complex questions which weave their way satisfyingly into the narrative. Taking this even further is the film’s villain, Erik Killmonger, a Wakandan isolated from the kingdom, calling for a revolution by black people against their oppressors. Michael B. Jordan is a charismatic villain, wonderful shades of humanity embedded within his performance, providing a fitting and scarily relatable foe for the Black Panther. A spunky ensemble (though prone to spouting exposition) completes the mix, Letitia Wright’s Shuri acting as the Q to T’Challa’s Bond and Martin Freeman delightfully Watson-esque as an obliging CIA agent.
For the most part, Black Panther is a stunning movie to witness, embracing its Afro-futurism with a colourful and vibrant design. The film feels very much buried in its cultural roots, which gives some understanding to the film’s significance. Ludwig Goransson provides a luscious and innovative score and rap numbers courtesy of Kendrick Lamar complement the action. The action sequences in the movie are also riveting; “I never freeze” pronounces T’Challa coolly in an early scene… and neither does the film itself. Pace never lags in relentless and sharp action sequences, gripping the audiences to their seats and, at some points, providing a strong emotional pay-off. The final act is certainly where the film is at its most disappointing, descending into an increasingly loud and banal CGI-fest, which, whilst not uncommon in a Marvel flick, is certainly beneath the calibre of Black Panther. Visual effects are also dodgy at certain instances, oddly plasticky and unfinished-looking. For the most part, however, Black Panther delivers soundly for popcorn moviegoers, never allowing its themes and cultural statements to overtake the pure entertainment.
One only has to see Black Panther to understand the reasons behind its sensation and the whisper of Oscars floating around. Ryan Coogler has crafted a visually staggering blockbuster, which manages to tell an engrossing story, with plenty of popcorn thrills, yet also a remarkably deep cultural message that boasts great relevance. Black Panther is without a doubt one of the most exciting and inventive Marvel outings yet.

One of biggest hits of MCU previous for showdown Infinity war. The characters -heroes and foes- are justified and dynamic, so the action and battle sequences. Pay attention for one of last cameos of Stan Lee.

It is an absolutely refreshing joy to see an African-American cast in a major super-hero movie. It may mostly be a by-the-book Marvel film but seeing it come out of the mouths of diverse faces more than makes up for it's shortcomings.

Though it can get a little slow in its more dramatic parts, Black Panther is still a passable Marvel film with a great performance from everyone in the cast, and some admirable work from Ryan Coogler.
