AsMichael Keaton plays an actor who's struggling to mount his Broadway debut. In addition to the challenges of the show and confrontations with his family, he's in constant conflict with the shadow of the superhero that made him a star. As expected, Keaton is outstanding, but the rest of the cast turns in rich and nuanced performances (Emma Stone is a revelation). What makes this film so brilliant is director Alejandro González Iñárritu's inspired vision. It's shot as one continuous take, which is not only a tech challenge, but creates a sense of fluid time and continuous stress. A slightly surreal, constantly compelling and richly realized combination of personal drama and theatrical send-up. Expand

The dialog was masterful and and the performances had me believing I, too, was paranoid and insecure. Kudos to director Alejandro González Iñárritu and his financial backers for taking such a bold risk, something largely absent in Hollywood. And any film that questions the credibility and relevance of critics get extra points. GO SEE! Expand

It is clearly aThough I do understand the brilliance of the script, cinema, and acting, I choose not to reiterate the praise for Birdman. Instead, I prefer to give fair warning to movie goers that this is not a universally enjoyed movie. It is clearly a movie for the industry of the arts, whether it is literature, film, music, dance, drama, and much of the joy from the movie is in sharing that perspective with the characters, whether it is the drama of backstage Broadway, literary references by the street characters, or watching and listening to the hum of NYC perched on a gritty roof top sign. Much of the drama and comedy will be lost on average movie goers, and the irritating jazz drum beat, disturbing voice in Keaton's head, and occasional physical tantrums will drive some to distraction. While I enjoyed this movie, laughed at and with its characters, and appreciated all of the incredible performances, especially of Stone, Watts and Norton, I'm fairly certain that many will have expected to see something more formulaic and might leave the film scratching their heads or crawling the walls.

The film reminds me of The Dresser, a fine film and extraordinary performance by Albert Finney, but one that also shares an uncomfortable story line of a back stage drama. See the movie, but discard your expectations and don't expect to relax.

Once you get over the clever "one take" filming method its just a bore-fest with a few funny moments scattered about. Very well acted though just a shame the story is too minimal.

The film is being herald as a movie making technical feat, acting at its best, plus definite Oscar nominations for Michael Keaton and Edward Norton in some of the lesser media oversell. I bought in to it!

Keaton is a one time movie star who became famous playing the superhero Birdman who decides to come to Broadway in a play he has written, is producing, directing and is starring in for a comeback. Playing opposite is another film star (Naomi Watts) making her Broadway debut and Mike Shiner (Norton) a method actor who believes you use a real gun in a scene when he is going to be shot and drinking real gin on stage. Also involved is Laura (Andrea Riseborough), Keaton’s sometime lover, his daughter Sam, (Emma Stone) just recently out of rehab being her Dad’s assistant, his ex-wife Sylvia (Amy Ryan) and his attorney Zach Galifianakis.

It has been described as a comedy/drama, a first rate back stage story but regarding the former I laughed once and as far as the latter comes nowhere near “All About Eve”. There is one scene far fetched scene where The New York Times fictional critic, played by Lindsay Duncan, tells Keaton she will destroy his play, and him, for having the nerve to come to Broadway for his comeback.

Yes Keaton does a good job with what has to work with, Norton has some good moments but it is Emma Stone who makes the strongest impression.

Director Alejandro G. Inarritu, who co-wrote the film with Nicolas Giacobone, Alexander Dinelaris and Armando Bo, also produced it. His gimmick, working with his cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, making it seem like the movie, even though taking place over a few days, was filmed in one continuous take and is very successful at it. The music, mainly drumming by Antonio Sanchez, at times is affecting but most of the time annoying.

I may wind up in the minority, and Keaton and Norton may get the Oscar nominations that are being talked about, but as a comedy or a drama or a satire “Birdman” doesn’t rate a worth seeing from me.

Bravura filmmaking and a wonderful cast, excluding star Michael Keaton who simply can't pull this off, BIRDMAN is ultimately banal, self-indulgent claptrap signifying nothing but everything it purports to criticize.

BIRDMAN is the most intriguing one, it might give Alejandro González Iñárritu the prestige which his fellow Mexican compatriot Alfonso Cuarón has received one year earlier for GRAVITY (2013, 9/10), simply because the film is the another formidable labour-of-love with a paradigm-shifting cinematographic endeavour, not a coincidence, the two films share the same DP Emmanuel Lubezki, not even detractors can deny BIRDMAN’s spurious one-long-take gimmick is a wonder to witness, sometimes viewers are so much so that being overpowered by the slithering camera movements in the masterly spatial structures and even overlook the proceedings on screen, so, a re-watch is highly recommended.

If you like it, it’s probably something you’ll want to watch twice just to make sure you didn’t miss anything. Michael Keaton plays Riggan Thomson, a former movie star who is best known for his role as comic book superhero Birdman. Riggan walked away from the role many years ago and is tormented by his decision. No longer of interest to anyone in Hollywood, Riggan writes, directs and stars in his own Broadway play in an effort to stay relevant and prove (mostly to himself) that his success as Birdman was not a fluke, and that he has real acting talent.

By all appearances, Riggan is well beyond the zenith of his career. His desire to be an actor in the limelight has cost him dearly over the years in terms of his relationship with daughter (Emma Stone), his ex-wife (Amy Ryan) and his current girlfriend (Andrea Riseborough). Possibly due to his lack of subsequent success, Birdman has become Riggan’s alter ego and his sense of reality is becoming increasing warped. The movie seems to be asking questions like: What kind of person seeks a career in acting? Do actors start out as insecure egomaniacs incapable of real intimacy and emotion or is there a real danger that years of trying to make it as an actor will make you this way? Or is film is poking fun (tongue in beak) at the public’s hackneyed perception of actors and acting. Hmmm? Overall it’s just enjoyable, not stunning or profound.

The story is told mostly from inside the head of Keaton, but deftly moves around to show you the chaos and insecurity enveloping lives of everyone associated with acting or the stage. Reminiscent of Bob Fosse’s 1979 musical All That Jazz. Extremely well-acted by everyone involved. Expect several Oscar nominations for this one, including best actor for Keaton and best actor in a supporting role for Edward Norton, who is absolutely hilarious. Nice change of pace performances from both Emma Stone and Zach Galfianikis. The cinematography is also excellent.

Well this movie was boring, too artsy in a Andre Butzer vs Salvador Dali way. The way you think don't i understand this kind of art or do those critics suffer from some kind of groups dynamic. The camera wasn't groundbreaking at all its just some old technique used again. Its like someone building bricks out of stone with a chisel (cool but not really chain breaking in whats possible). Its like the Band Kraftwerk has made their music with age old instruments still nice music but nothing to talk about nothing game changin, like James Cameron did with state of the art techniques in Titanic. The music one of the most important parts in makin a good movie was a complete fail here. You cannnot take one annoying drum solo and put it on every scene. No Tarantino movie had been good at all if he had taken a f**in drum solo and put it on every scene. Music is a mood enhancer and not some artsy instrument to tell the world hey listen to that drum solo this movie really is artsy.
All in all the movie has done almost everything wrong that could have been done wrong.

I got off to a slow start because I think too much style usually gets in the way and is considered sufficient; flowy kinetic tracking shots accompanied by surreal time changes and aggressive sound design. However, the story takes enough turns and the acting is mostly excellent. As the film progressed, I increasingly enjoyed being along for the ride. In its terms, it was mostly successful. In fairness, it is hard to reach the highest levels of profundity in black comedy, but it is certainly possible to be more edgy or more dark. I think the film is unique and worth seeing. Expand

As a mental health professional, I would recommend this movie to all others in the field and anyone interested in mental health. Although the movie is about an actor searching for meaning, validity and understanding in life, these are universal issues which most people seek answers to. Whether or not we are successful in reconciling these issues in our own minds goes a long way in determining our psychological balance. Expand

Stupid idiot that ISome mildly interesting performances raise a forgettable affair from abysmal to mediocre. Some cheap symbolism and some even cheaper pop psychology apparently has critics raving like a flock of seagulls during mating time. Stupid idiot that I am I assumed that this was because the annual intelligent Hollywood movie had been released. But as it happened all the racket was in aid of a tedious navel gazing exercise of dubious quality. But then it`s always one or the other with Hollywood`s "intellectual" movies apparently.

Someone more intelligent than I, as well as all the people engaged in the production of Birdman, once said that a tragedy displays the misfortunes of man while a comedy displays the misfortunes of the individual. The only funny thing about Birdman then was me and the other silly sods who were fooled into watching it by all the hype. And I suppose the only tragedy was the other silly sods who watched it and liked it because they imagine it to be witty and intelligent. It is neither. Avoid with fingers in ears to drown out the noise and while loudly singing "doodah doodah!" to make doubly sure you don`t get hypnotized by critics into watching it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The forgotten hollywood top star who played superhero 'Birdman', Riggan tomson want to bring back his shiny days for challenging broadway show. He never acheived recognition from public, so gap between ideal and reality makes riggan exhausted. Riggan feels big pressure from rebooting classic play, and the famous and loved actor, Edward norton's unexpecting behavior, also prestigious critic, Tabitha dickinson's poor prereview. Through this bleack condition, how birdman could fly over sky again.
this movie has four outstanding features. First, using long take shot for pretending play show, because of the background of this movie, story of the play actor attracts watchers eyes. Next, the magical realistic, birdman shows his magical power in the real world, but people don't have resistance between magical and realistic. The smooth magical realistic technique creates film more fantastic atmosphere. The show business satire, also a feature of the birdman film, spoil broadway and hollywood's dark side which create value only from SNS marketing but artistic factor. Michael Keaton's remarkable acting makes this movie more popular too. His life just looks like as riggan tomson, drag inner inspiration out.

One would expect that, with a cast like this, the film would have to be a winner. Unfortunately it is not and despite or because of the direction of Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu and the screenplay by Alexander Dinclarus, Armando Bo and Nicholas Giacobone, the viewer is subjected to great and talented actors being compelled to participate in a weak story filled with surrealistic sequences that add little and in many ways detract from the essence of the film. The acclaim that other critics have afforded this film seems to be based more on the uniqueness and unorthodox techniques than the quality of the film itself. Different doesn’t always mean better and in this instance the interjections by the writers and director serve only to distract rather than supplement the characters and the roles they play. That being said, the performances of Messrs. Keaton and Norton are worth seeing but one wishes they were in a different vehicle. I give the film 2 and ½ stars because fine acting deserves proper recognition but it can never make a mediocre film really good. Expand

Quem sou eu? Você é BIRDMAN.
A busca.

So glad it won Best Picture. I would've been disappointed if Boyhood won, sure it was extremely ambitious ambitious filmmaking, but I feel that overshadowed the fact that the movie was kind of bland and about nothing. Birdman, however, was a equally ambitious filmmaking and a great story and characters to boot. Keaton deserved the Oscar for best actor. He gave the best performance of last year, and if J.K. Simmons wasn't so fantastic in Whiplash, Norton would be putting a golden man in his bathroom too. See this film if you haven't, it's one of the most original films of the past decade. Expand

This year’s Birdman, made by fellow Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, seeks to one-up the long takes of Gravity by seemingly having one continuous shot.

It isn’t a single take but that in no way diminishes the superb camera work. Instead of cutting between characters the camera glides to them, taking on a life of its own at times. The disembodied camera floating down hall ways and stairs feels both surreal and exhilarating when paired with the upbeat jazz score. The behind the scenes of a theatre production have never been more thrilling. Birdman is a bold technical exercise and instead of the B-movie that Gravity was under the surface, Birdman has soul.

Michael Keaton plays Riggan, a washed up ex-Hollywood Superhero who is attempting to restart his career by staging and staring in a Broadway play. However, Riggan hasn’t left the past behind and the Birdman character that made him famous still plagues his thoughts. He is a man divided, in Freudian terms his psyche is split. Part of him longs for the glory days of Birdman while part of him wants to prove critics wrong, showing them he is more than just a celebrity.

The internal turmoil of his life mirrors the external chaos of his stage play. In an act of fate, a falling camera takes out the sole incompetent actor working for him who is replaced by the talented and egotistical Mike Shiner (Edward Norton on top form). At first Mike appears to be a god-send but quickly becomes another obstacle for Riggan. Besides stealing the spotlight in the play, Mike also develops an interest for Riggan’s daughter (Emma Stone) who is fresh out of rehab and has clear daddy-issues. One of the female leads in the play claims to be pregnant with Riggan’s child. Stuffed to the brim with dramatic tensions, Birdman is reminiscent of the high-speed comedy dramas of Howard Hawks.

Birdman is the first of two mainstream Hollywood satires this year, the second being David Cronenberg’s Maps to the Stars. Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (who also wrote the screenplay) fires shot after shot at the self-obsessed culture of Hollywood. This culture which at least in myth was one confined to the California hills, has now transcended Tinsletown with the dawn of the internet. Now with Facebook and Twitter everyone is just a video post away from fame and, as Edward Norton reminds us after his massive on-stage erection goes viral; there is no such thing as bad press.

If there is a criticism of Birdman, it’s how ambitious the film is. Alejandro seemingly throws all his ideas at us and the film moves at such a brisk pace that they all can’t be absorbed in a single viewing. A more restrained approach, focusing on fewer topics but in more detail instead of attempting to take on all of celebrity culture in 119 minutes may have better served the film. However, despite the chaos, the film still works, thanks in no small part to the outstanding performances in the leading and supporting roles.

Michael Keaton, without a doubt, deserves an Oscar for this one! Edward Norton also deserves a best supporting actor nod for his performance. Very hard to do with the single long take camera moves. Technically very impressive. A good immersive movie with strong story that works fully on an audience? Not even. The director likes to think of himself as a challenging filmmaker, but really it's more about being pretentious and kissing the ass of a stuffy New York Broadway live theatre intelligentsia to get attention which it sure got. To make a movie with a strong narrative that moves viewers along is far harder. I like Michael Keaton and he's very good in a role made for him, but sorry this is not great. Sure there are movies that are technically worse, but a big consideration for me is how overrated a movie is. If a movie wins best picture at the Academy Awards it better be damn good. Alas, this movie is not only not damn good, but it is horrendously bad. It's hard to justify even calling this a movie. It's basically a collection of random events which are somehow collectively meant to be some sort of profound statement. It is very frustrating to be lied to about a movie being good. Why the dishonesty from the critics? I think they must be bribed or just give positive reviews because they don't want studios and stars complaining to their bosses? I don't get it. I wanted more and I was left feeling that the ending was really a cop-out, given the complexity of everything that led up to it. I'm trying avoid spoilers here. The ending was foreshadowed so often and in so many ways that when it finally happens my reaction was, "So what?" While all great films foreshadow the conclusion in one way or another, the best films surprise you as well. This one didn't so I was left feeling empty. The film's technical merits are without exception. Most predominant is
that the whole movie feels like one long sequence shot, from about
minute 2 until nearly the end. There are disguised cuts, and the movie
finds moments to settle down the camera to contrast the movement. But
the orchestration of actors, the re-framing of the camera, and the
support of crew outside the frame, are nothing short of phenomenal.

The film's artistic merits are easy to see in the performances, design
and composition, but harder to puzzle out emotionally/intellectually.
They rely partly on multiple ambiguities, and the audience will need to
do some broad-view thinking about life and art to really crack open the
movie. For all of this, I would not say that the merits are so rarified
that they should push away anyone who wants to see a challenging movie.
They are hard to crack, but not because you really have to understand
all the references.

The cast is filled withThe Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences must have a soft spot for films that are about their own industry, for how else do you explain that Birdman snatched up the highest honors at the Oscars this year? The cast is filled with veteran actors whose reputation precedes them—Michael Keaton, Emma Stone, Andrea Riseborough, Edward Norton, Naomi Watts and Zach Galifianakis are the featured players, and they are all well-known stars. Keaton plays an actor whose heyday is long over. It has been over twenty years since he was famous for being a comic book character named Birdman. Now determined to make a comeback as a serious actor, Riggan Thomson (Michael Keaton) has written, produced and is starring in his own Broadway play, based on a short story by Raymond Carver, “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love.”

Broadway is the dream destination for many a serious actor, but director/writer Alejandro Inarritu sees the seedy side of the glamour. The backstage fitting rooms are cluttered, dark, and depressing. Actors are all psychologically damaged. They are obsessed with sexuality; they are angry and frustrated; and they have broken families and broken lives. Riggan himself is functional but psychotic—he thinks he has superpowers, he has auditory hallucinations where he hears the voice of Birdman, his old character, who is constantly berating him. And most dangerously, he thinks he can fly.

As the show’s producer, Riggan is depending on his male lead, Mike Shiner (Edward Norton), to attract large audiences. Shiner is famous but he is an alcoholic who believes that his devotion to his art has elevated him to a priesthood that makes him an untouchable demigod. When Shiner gets drunk on stage in previews and disrupts the show so that the curtain has to come down on a shocked audience, he merely excuses himself with the arrogant belief that previews are not that important. Riggan’s daughter Samantha (Emma Stone) works for her father as his assistant, a job she hates, but she is fresh out of rehab and is lucky to be employed. She is disheveled, lost, and spiritually battered as is every member of the play’s cast.

The theatricality of the stage is a different kind of acting from film acting. One has to exaggerate one’s gestures, project one’s voice, and pretend that you are unaware of the hundreds of people sitting in the audience. We see Keaton and company practicing their craft on stage, but when they leave the stage, they are unable to leave behind the theatricality. We have actors playing actors, who then must be actors playing actors who are acting in a play; then they exit the stage and go back to actors playing actors. There are fifty shades of subtlety involved, and they can’t identify all the hues. They simply keep acting like they are on a stage the whole time. It makes for an eccentric artificiality, which starts to become tedious by the end of the film.

Theater critics do not fare well in this film. The most powerful critic in New York City admits to Riggan that she is going to close down the play with a scathing review, even though the play hasn’t opened yet, and she has not seen a single preview. She is described by Riggan and Shiner as a woman who looks like she just licked the derriere of a homeless person, an imbecile insult that boggles the mind.

In general, magical realism is an interesting genre, but when the “magic” part is actually a manifestation of symptoms of mental illness, it’s not that interesting.

I like what one critic said about the audience needs to be capable of understanding this "cinematic stretch" because a lot of imagination needs to be used to make this story work. It has a great variety of characters who have one goal, have a successful play, but they're having trouble getting along. Along with that, the primary character appears to be having a mental breakdown. The film rings very true until the end. Once I figure out the ending, I'll be able to say I understood the entire movie. Expand

The one continuous shot that is used to film the movie is a nice touch and is definitely different than what I"ve seen before. The main issue I have here is the movie definitely thinks it's alot smarter than it really is with its portrayal of a man slowly realizing he's not what he once was then coming to terms with that. There are a ton of little stories here and there that make up the entire movie and he addresses most of them, but leaving a fairly important story behind.
I loved what Edward Norton did in this movie and he definitely stole the show for me. However his character was left in the dust toward the end. Michael Keaton did a good job here but it is Norton who I'll most remember from this movie.
I just couldn't over the fact that this movie felt like Oscar bait the entire way through. And for a movie that tries to keep you on the edge of your seat the entire time, the big scene at the end was fairly predictable. I'm not entirely sure if I liked this movie but I can definitely say it was good enough to watch.

Birdman is weird, different and also brilliant. The cinematography, by the guy who did Gravity, does an incredible job in helping to tell the story. The movie had a near perfect fluid pace with great acting and intriguing dialogue

Knowing Michael Keaton's past and him even using his "batman" voice as a narration voice, combined with Edward Norton's acting and the behind the scenes with him and Marvel over the Hulk franchise, kind of blends fantasy and reality which to me made for a pretty captivating movie - considering the theme and story of the movie.

Makes one wonder how much "acting" either actor had to do since neither of their careers are where they were once before....

"Birdman" is a breath of fresh air, much in the same way as "Being John Malkovich" and "Her" were when they came out. From the first scene until the last, "Birdman" moves in unexpected ways. Like any film, you can nitpick here and there, but I'll take a film that takes chances like this over 90% of the mediocrity that Hollywood spews out every year. The cast is first rate. A lot has been said about the performances of Michael Keaton, Edward Norton and Emma Stone in the film, but Naomi Watts is also very good. I don't understand why she isn't getting the same Oscar buzz as the other three cast members. Alejandro González Iñárritu has done it again. Expand

Keaton was very good in this flick and Norton was perfectly cast at his opposite. The story meanders a bit but the film does not seem to be too long with a message of self reaffirmation tied with self doubt/past success.

Inarritu immaculately chooses bleak colour palettes and a nuanced percussive score to illustrate an atmosphere that teems with energy, electricity and realism, fleshing out vivid characters with great acting and even better dialogue. 'Birdman' is a character study, a deliciously intelligent satire and a dark comedy, all wrapped up in one gorgeous masterwork of true visual art. Expand

The satire is rampant though dismissive, the irony is subtle, the double identity dilemma is plain fantastic. There's wide use of some Lynch-esque magic, paired with brutal reality, and a great performance by Michael Keaton. Edward Norton is hilarious as the hyperbolic Hollywood superstar, and Emma Stone's fierce acting is spot-on.

There are few missteps in Birdman, and they're forgotten quite soon. A limping drumset sets the score to the best comedy of the past year.

Birdman is a movie about a play while the movie is done like a theater piece. Sound confusing? Think "mashup" where two different things are put together to create something new while retaining elements of both. I can understand why some viewers wouldn't "get it".

I loved it. I also love live theater and movies so I got the best of both worlds. The acting is excellent. Keaton, of course, but also Edward Norton, Emma Stone, Naomi Watts, Zach Galifianakis and the rest of the ensemble are clearly cut characters.

About what ?? well the story is simple. a washed up actor trying to come back with a Broadway play. However , it's ambiguous and you've (me too) watch it more than once to dig more and more of its precisely-packed layers. Is it about art versus commerciality?? Is it about the stress and urgency of life ?? for me, it's about what we do here in our lives and what the point is and the seeking of happiness and being loved.
Alejandro G. Iñárritu is great here creating magical realism with different new tone. It's sad and funny at the same moment , a fantasy that tells the very truth.
The actors are all great especially Keaton whose background as batman adds to the background of birdman and the movie uses that very well leading to a heartfelt performance.
The technical aspects are great especially the cinematography which is another character. The movie is shot into a seemingly continuous one shot creating a marvelous experience. The camera flows through and around characters , corridors of the theater and the street creating a sense of being trapped into this this life. It left me dazzled and exhausted.

Masterful execution of the one-shot technique, brilliant and definitely one of the best screenplays of this year, great performances, one of the funniest films of the year, and time only flies while watching it. It flies so damn fast, that the movie feel much too short. Behind the masterful overall execution of the film and the main story, there is a somehow tragic story about an actor, who doesn't find his place on the world and starts to wonder, if he really matters on this world. A film that shows the true side of the entertainment business as well as it shows the "bad" side of being an actor. Not typical performances from Keaton, Norton and Galifianakis, but they fit in very well. A weird, genius, and awesome film. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It is unique and, even with slights, that same uniqueness will never overrate the film. "The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance" is just a bubble that develops as part of the identity of Riggan during the film and the constant apparition of characters like Sam and even Birdman create the sense of reality that was missing inside Thomson's appreciation of life; the end is different and it makes the audience decide whether the movie is worth it or not (it is!). Alejandro González Iñárritu wonderfully makes it feel like you are fully involved with the whole cast and film with his excellent camera work and editing, making it feel like it’s all one shot: which it almost is. The acting is also top notch with elevated performances from Michael Keaton and Edward Norton and every other actor being superb in all their roles too. The story is also quite possibly the most original thing to have come out in the last 5-10 years maybe. The use of cinematography along with symbolism is flawlessly executed throughout the film and it is a joy to watch from start to finish, never dipping.
Now, the plot is basically a man who used to be a superhero star (Michael Keaton) wants to become relevant again and be taken seriously 20 years after his money making break as Birdman, and to do so he is putting on a Broadway theatre play that he writes, directs and stars in. However, he is struggling to keep stable as many things awry up and make him even more anxious about showing the play. It also doesn’t help that his old Birdman persona is mocking him narratively in his head. Each character is then fleshed out through the stories happenings and every character feels necessary and put to full affect in the film.
Another thing, this film gets it spot on with one scene that had me grinning about snooty, up themselves critics that see themselves above the theatrical world and how they label things instead of actually dissecting films/theatre etc. The scene played out wonderfully, but then again every scene does in this film.
Overall, this film was masterfully crafted. Acting, directing, characters, plot, cinematography, dialogue, themes and comedy are all implemented in an untouchable way that cements it as one of the greatest films of this day and age.
