Very weird and very funny. Some strong performances from Emma Stone and Edward Norton elevate this clever film even more. Perfect casting choice regarding Michael Keaton (the irony was not lost on any of us).

There is creativity in spades here. From the clever screenplay and the way it was edited to all look like one take to the vibrant cinematography and outstanding performances, this may very well be many movie buffs' dream film. Keaton, Stone, and Norton all give great, perhaps career best performances. It's absolutely crazy but it's also very buzzy and the characters are all extremely well written. It's one of the best movies of 2014, but it does lack a certain lasting resonance. I had to drop it to an 8 from a 9 because of this. It just isn't quite as good a movie as American Hustle or Her, or in my own opinion which I know is in the minority, Interstellar. But if you're looking for something different, fun, funny, and sometimes emotional, go for Birdman without hesitation. Expand

A riveting character study from beginning to end, Birdman features many, many positives that make it deserving of the acclaim it received. Firstly, the cinematography is impeccable, as are the editing and soundtrack. The acting from Michael Keaton, Edward Norton, Naomi Watts, and everyone else, is great. The casting and the way the characters almost match the actors playing them was also an awesome little touch. The direction from Alejandro Gonzalez Innarritu is also very good, as is the writing. Ultimately, Birdman is a tale of a man trying to regain past glory and dealing with his own high expectations for himself. Though, to say I understand this one is far off from the truth. In fact, I found it quite confusing. All the same, Birdman is a great film that really succeeds on the back of its many strong features and touching romantic/familial elements. Expand

Stupid idiot that ISome mildly interesting performances raise a forgettable affair from abysmal to mediocre. Some cheap symbolism and some even cheaper pop psychology apparently has critics raving like a flock of seagulls during mating time. Stupid idiot that I am I assumed that this was because the annual intelligent Hollywood movie had been released. But as it happened all the racket was in aid of a tedious navel gazing exercise of dubious quality. But then it`s always one or the other with Hollywood`s "intellectual" movies apparently.

Someone more intelligent than I, as well as all the people engaged in the production of Birdman, once said that a tragedy displays the misfortunes of man while a comedy displays the misfortunes of the individual. The only funny thing about Birdman then was me and the other silly sods who were fooled into watching it by all the hype. And I suppose the only tragedy was the other silly sods who watched it and liked it because they imagine it to be witty and intelligent. It is neither. Avoid with fingers in ears to drown out the noise and while loudly singing "doodah doodah!" to make doubly sure you don`t get hypnotized by critics into watching it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The very same critics that couldn't figure out why they weren't laughing at Gilliam's film "Zero Theorem" now find themselves guffawing at this "Comedy" about a washed up schizophrenic actor on the brink of murdering his co workers and killing himself.
Where I'm from... Suicide is not funny, nor do you gain the adulation of critics by pointing a loaded gun at co workers and then shooting yourself. This is the true theme of the movie... Which isn't funny at all. It's terrifying, and this why this movie is a slap in the face to even the critics who hail it's achievement because if you understand this film... Everyone's ignorance about it is blatantly obvious. This is a movie about a psycho who is teetering on the edge of murder suicide. This psycho (played by Michael Keaton) is further pushed toward his boiling point by ego driven, narcissistic characters who are too self absorbed to realize how terrifyingly close they come to getting their heads blown off by pushing the buttons of a washed up actor who wants to be serious but isn't taken seriously after playing the role of an action hero 20 years prior. After reaching his boiling point in the theater and nearly executing his co workers with a loaded gun... He shoots himself... Misses... And ends up in the hospital where he is extolled for his magnificent achievement in theater... He jumps from a window... Killing himself and further scars his emotionally disturbed daughter who imagines him flying around which portrays the solidification of her psychosis after years of his psychological abuse. The theme of this movie is buried under the pretentiousness of it. AND THAT IS THE POINT. "The unexpected virtue of ignorance" is what this film represents. At first, I didn't understand what the hubbub was about... I was ignorant. Then I realized that it was MY problem because the only thing that caught my attention (ego) was all the pretentious (ego) stroking going on. I almost missed the point entirely. This isn't a comedy... It's a horror flick. It's a film about ignorance or "Bird brains". The lead character played by Keaton is a psycho! He believes he has super powers. He is schizophrenic. He has conversations with himself. Purely nuts... But on the surface this all seems playfully dramatic to the ignorant ego driven viewer, or critic. The other characters are simply cannon fodder for the lead. It was good. I watched it all the way to the end. Perhaps I have yet to understand the significance of the drums throughout the score however... I felt like the score was lacking somewhat in originality. Overall... It was a good movie. I think most audience members, critics, and industry people will fail to see the real theme here.... As usual.

The film revolves around Riggan Thomson (played by an excellent Michael Keaton), a washed up actor who decides to direct, write, and star in his own Broadway adaptation of Raymond Carver's short story "What We Talk About When We Talk About Love". All of Riggan's struggles with his personal life and his ego manifests itself in the days leading up to the play. The film is very self aware and it definitely challenges audiences with its concepts. Those concepts, mind you, are open to interpretation. There's some irony that it won Best Picture and not in a good way. I was actually hoping it wouldn't win because it kind of takes the bite out of the satire. Expand

Oh well...I guess the whole does not equal the sum of its parts in this case.

Keaton mumbles his way through this film, even when on stage in a play (who mumbles line in a play?). The Magic Realism elements are interesting but seem mostly out of place amongst the grunge of backstage Broadway. The jazzy drum soundtrack didn't so much support the film as it distracted from the film. The play within the film was so briefly shown and so stunted as a plot element that it seemed to me much ado about nothing.

I didn't hate the film but after having read so many positive reviews from critics I'd say I was immensely disappointed. The critic I now most agree with on this film is Rex Reed, except he thought Keaton's performance was a bright note and I wouldn't even give him that.

The story to Birdman is about an wash up actor (Michael Keaton) - famous for portraying an iconic superhero - as he struggles to mount a Broadway play. In the days leading up to opening night, he battles his ego and attempts to recover his family, his career, and himself.

Okay in my review of Whiplash I bought this movie up mid way through the review just to give a heads up of when I'm going to watch it, because Birdman was my most hyped film of 2014. But just like every time I really wanted to see a film so baldy I have to wait for a while until I finally get a chance to watch it, story of my life really. But anywhere I was really looking forward to this movie ever since September, and now finally seeing the film I can safely say that Birdman is one of the best movie of 2014.

I always know that Micheal Keaton was the kind of movie star that will pick any random movie role just because... well he what's to be important and still show to everyone that he still got it, I guess?. Like early last year now he was in two movies that were pretty blah, and that was The Robocop remake and the film Need for Speed, and those films just made Keaton look like he was just cashing it in just for the sake of it. Until when I watched this movie and seeing Micheal Keaton's performance and thinking to myself "Wait is Keaton giving probably his best performance I've ever seen in my life? I think he is", because Keaton in this movie pretty much pulls of the best performance I've seen him in his all career. His character in this movie is like a wash up actor who had everything like love from the critics, his fans. Yeah he still dose have that Keaton thing that he always dose in his previous movies, but the scenes where he plays his character (Which is himself if you really look at his character in this movie) but anywhere he still gives a strong and believable performance that at times give me flashbacks of the good old days where he still had roots and felt like he isn't just cashing it in. I hear a lot of Oscar buzz about his performance in this movie, and I wouldn't be surprise if he wins because he totally deserves it. Excellent work Keaton.

Edward Norton is this movie pretty much plays a familiar character to himself has the hard to work with actor that at times doesn't follow the lines that he was given or even the direction he was told. We already know that Norton is a fantastic actor in his previous work, but in this movie his performance could be descried has stellar and insanely good.

Emma Stone is this movie and of course like most of the actors I named of so far of who outstanding they were in this movie and well you can already guess what I'm going to say next. Emma Stone acting in this movie was just terrific and marvellous to watch in this movie and it's good to see a real break out performance from her more than the lay back ones in her other movies. Nice one Emma. The other cast in the movie like Naomi Watts, Zach Galifianakis both did good as well.

The movie is shot to look like it's all one shot take and my mind was just blown away by that fact. There where screens were I said to myself "Oh my god is it one shot?", well I can already imagine the stress, hard work and how many takes they had to do to get it, and boy did it pay off nicely, because I couldn't take my eyes off the screen. I dared myself to look away from the beautiful cinematography and the impressive editing used in the film.

The movie has a brilliant message about film critics today that doesn't feel like it's in your face message that you normally get in movies. There is a scene in this movie and it's not a spoiler by the way, but I really need to get this out the way first. So anywhere Micheal Keaton character just starts having a rant over this theater critic who is going to give a bad review to his play when she hasn't even seen it or seen any of the premieres. He talks about how she only users big words that nobody will say in person and shes to lazy to come up what she really thinks about it so she users big words just to fill in the sentence. This movie probably has the best rant in movie history and Keaton in that scene shows how good of a actor that he is.

For problems in the movie... I really don't have any to be honest.

I loved this movie and yes I'm coming out be saying that. This isn't just the best movie of the year and such, no this is just flawless film making right here. Birdman and Whiplash are the two films I will highly recommend to people because those two films are my favorite films of 2014.

Lately I kind of start to hate modern 'art house' movies. These movies take themselves so serious, and that's why they are so boring. I was amazed at the length of the shots in Birdman. In fact, I could not actually tell when one shot ended and another began; the entire film seemed to flow seamlessly as one scene. Furthermore, the use of magical realism was extremely interesting, showing the tormented and conflicted mental state of the protagonist, Riggan Thomson (played to perfection by Michael Keaton). As you have likely already heard, all of the actors in this film have performed extremely well.

My only minor gripe with Birdman is its use of Edward Norton's character, Mike Shiner, an unorthodox and unpredictable Broadway actor. The character takes a major role from the start to middle of the film, with hints at his troubled personal life present throughout, only for Mike to be nearly disregarded by the end. However, I am unsure how an adequate amount of time could have been devoted to Mike without infringing on Riggan's struggles. Regardless, Birdman is a great film that I would recommend to anyone looking for a thought provoking, black-comedy drama!

For a film to truly connect and be likable, it's helpful to be able to like some of the characters. I can't remember when I've ever been introduced to such a shallow, angry, selfish, bunch of hipsters. For that's what they are. Just edgy hipsters with lots and lots of "clever" snarky lines. I suppose Hollywood finds this meaningful as that is about all they know, but the rest of us are lucky enough to live away from that empty world of full time self absorption. Maybe the way it was shot was innovative; that certainly doesn't make it worthy of anything more than some technical achievement. I had stopped reading the 1st book in Will Durant's History of Civilization series to watch this movie. What a mistake. There is more value for the soul and intellect in any 1 page of that book than anywhere in the entire length of this movie. Expand

And again, I would have liked if The Grand Budapest Hotel had won the Best Picture oscar.

The film is heavy on style - and yes it's a refreshing style. But the intense "edginess" created by Inarittu is not my idea of "comedy" black or otherwise. The the appeal of this type of intensity is highly subjective - at times it was simply too much for me. The jagged tone and intensity made it difficult to appreciate what was a dramatic tool - this Birdman / alter-ego that we hear in Keaton's head. It's not entertaining when you can't help but wonder if the man is seriously suffering from mental breakdown marked with schizophrenia. ( No spoilers here) And then there's the whole BIG fact that this is film is for movie/stage insiders, yes the actors and the director are having a grand time, and those in the industry can thoroughly enjoy this self-indulgent vanity piece - but as for the rest of us? This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It is unique and, even with slights, that same uniqueness will never overrate the film. "The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance" is just a bubble that develops as part of the identity of Riggan during the film and the constant apparition of characters like Sam and even Birdman create the sense of reality that was missing inside Thomson's appreciation of life; the end is different and it makes the audience decide whether the movie is worth it or not (it is!). Expand

The one continuous shot that is used to film the movie is a nice touch and is definitely different than what I"ve seen before. The main issue I have here is the movie definitely thinks it's alot smarter than it really is with its portrayal of a man slowly realizing he's not what he once was then coming to terms with that. There are a ton of little stories here and there that make up the entire movie and he addresses most of them, but leaving a fairly important story behind.
I loved what Edward Norton did in this movie and he definitely stole the show for me. However his character was left in the dust toward the end. Michael Keaton did a good job here but it is Norton who I'll most remember from this movie.
I just couldn't over the fact that this movie felt like Oscar bait the entire way through. And for a movie that tries to keep you on the edge of your seat the entire time, the big scene at the end was fairly predictable. I'm not entirely sure if I liked this movie but I can definitely say it was good enough to watch.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Occasionally a film comes along that really kicks ass. As this is basically the full-package, I’m going to focus first and foremost on the performances.

Acting is foregrounded in this film as a primary stylistic device. We see the tandem of realism and exaggerated acting styles perfectly navigate the meta-ness of the film, as we go through a backstage broadway show within a film, at times not quite sure if they are performing within the diegetic world the way its 'edited'. The decision to do the whole bit in a 'single shot' ensures we don't cut away and miss any of the great interactions that the narrative is positively bulging with(Although the camera moves at just the right rhythm for us to lose track of the contents of one scene and make room for the next). Scenes are divided in a way that is genuinely unique, cuts presumably coming as the camera wanders away as characters disperse, makes its way through the dark halls and reassimilates to a new encounter, unencumbered by traditional impeding notions of spatial or temporal continuity(but still keeping an interestingly motivated progression of events).

Ed Norton is pretty forceful in this film, it seems he's really come to terms with some of the lore around his being a pain in the ass to work with. Early scenes between he and Keaton are made exceptionally intense and riveting by the perpetually moving camera, its propensity to lunge in for close-ups and orbit the face give them great opportunities to lash out at one another, of which they take full advantage.

A thinner, almost sickly Emma Stone moves outside her previous typecast persona into something a little edgier and more utilitarian; its always a milestone when an actor finally gives you performance that allows us to forget our glaring yet superficial associations with their typical roles(for her, this is it).

Of Michael Keaton, someone said this was his best performance, it may have been he himself, and of what I’ve seen, I’m inclined to agree.

The show within the show ends with a brilliant reflexive moment, echoing in meaningful homage, as Keaton's character points the gun at the audience before turning it on himself, perhaps invoking the final shot of the indelible 'Great Train Robbery', as if to signal the film's knowledge of its place in the contemporary industry flooded with the kind of escapist mass-production that the devil(bird) on his soldier tempts him with throughout.

In many ways it is both truly unique and masterfully executed, and comes in under the definition of those films that are objectively ‘worth seeing’, as even if they aren’t your cup of tea, or whatever, there is something of intrigue that will inevitably strike.

The incompatibility of Hollywood and art is the primary issue that the film, and its main character deal with in the film, and I think it will take audiences and critics alike, awhile to collectively and retrospectively make the utmost of sense out of this movie, but in the aftermath of its winning of the Oscar for Best Picture, among others, it only complicates the issue. If you have any stake in it, and you do, you should go see this film.

My god, what a piece of junk Hollywood foisted on the general public with this movie.
After watching the first 25 minutes of it I realized that I had wasted 30 minutes of my life.

The movie should have been titled “The Bird” because it was so awful. Overacting, poor script, and unrealistic dialogue all fitted into the formula for this flick. It was Hollywood’s overindulgence to itself.

I am glad Michael Keaton got a chance to star in a movie but his acting was so over the top. And the same applied to Edward Norton, who is a fine actor.

I am sure a better movie could have be written about an actor who wanted to transition from Comic Hero to a dramatic actor. But this movie falls so flat on its face it needs nose surgery.

It has been a couple of months since my first time watching "Birdman" and the more I think about it, the more I love it!

From every angle, this movie succeeds. The cinematography is done with outstanding effects to make about 90% of the film in a single, artificial shot. The free flowing nature of the camera work fits into the film so well by bringing us into the pressure that these actors must feel (both as the characters must feel as well as the pressure of not screwing up a 10 minute take). Everything feels real, everything feels on edge and everything feels like it's one long continuous disaster an inch away from falling apart. It's an extra layer in what the characters are feeling. It's also an outstanding achievement in cinema. Everybody in front of the camera does a fantastic job, bringing in their A game. Keaton, Norton, Stone, everybody is incredible here. The film explores the idea of artistic creation vs. Hollywood fame and what the two mean for actors, critics and audience expectations. Keaton's character struggles to shake off the perception of him being a Hollywood, one hit wonder as the superhero Birdman by writing, directing and starring in his own adaption Raymond Carver for Broadway. The writing is clever and helps dissect what this all means for the film industry while at the same time giving this black comedy some style. It's also worth pointing out how brilliant the casting of Keaton is in this main role, he must have had a great time playing this role. The soundtrack also goes without saying, it's so damn good! This film is satire, clever and delivers on being a simply next-level film in every way. I recommend everybody watch this movie, but remember, don't be the audience that expects and wants "blood, action, not this talking, depressing, philosophical bulls***".

The characters were actors and the actual actors... well.. where also... uh... actors. But never mind, it was one chain reaction of acting all over the place. And don't get me wrong, - it was all good acting both pretended-real, real and real but pretended to be pretended-real. And it was wise and daring... This movie is highly appreciative for it camera work and editing. Emmanuel Lubezki (Cinematographer), Douglas Crise and Stephen Mirrione (Editors) deserves a big round of applause for most intensive care they took for this film as the whole movie looks like a single cut. This style of single-cut making is highly comparable to Alfred Hitchcock's 'Rope' which is an epic dramatic thriller. Although this movie 'Birdman' is touted to be a Black Comedy, it lacks that F*****g comedy because it is a drama based on a drama and what we hear most of the time is 'F**K'. You will get to know the theme of the movie at the pre-climax and it is hard for a common audience to sit 100 minutes listening to the word F**K and try to understand its meaning metaphorically. This story is about an impatient orthodox director cum actor who is trying to make a 60 year old miserable drama to reach this generation audience and believes that, it will redeem his career. Michael Keaton did a wonderful job and he is the heart and soul of this movie. But the misery is his fight with his own alternative character who is hampering him to be some other who the world really likes. This melodrama is throughout the movie and for a normal cine-goer, it is a painful watch. Do watch this movie if you want to really know how cinematography and editing looks like and if you are ardent fan of Micheal Keaton. Else forget it. Expand

The protagonist described is fighting for an ideal much bigger than himself, looking for transcendence and this obsession will take him to the edge (it sounds more as an Aronofsky's character than an Inarritu's one). From the cast, I can only save Sam (the stereotype of misunderstood and abandoned daughter), Mike (another stereotype of the pedantic and self-centered actor that does what we wants on the stage) and Ms. Dickinson (stereotype of the critic that hates everything and has an opinion even before seeing the play); the rest are a bunch of filling. About the story it's better not to talk about, doomed from the beginning, any outcome will be boring or cliche. What really shines on this film is the form of making it: long shot, cinematography, score, the use of the play inside a play, the voice-over that finally becomes tangible and the acting, highlighting Michael Keaton, Edward Norton and Emma Stone. About what ?? well the story is simple. a washed up actor trying to come back with a Broadway play. However , it's ambiguous and you've (me too) watch it more than once to dig more and more of its precisely-packed layers. Is it about art versus commerciality?? Is it about the stress and urgency of life ?? for me, it's about what we do here in our lives and what the point is and the seeking of happiness and being loved.
Alejandro G. Iñárritu is great here creating magical realism with different new tone. It's sad and funny at the same moment , a fantasy that tells the very truth.
The actors are all great especially Keaton whose background as batman adds to the background of birdman and the movie uses that very well leading to a heartfelt performance.
The technical aspects are great especially the cinematography which is another character. The movie is shot into a seemingly continuous one shot creating a marvelous experience. The camera flows through and around characters , corridors of the theater and the street creating a sense of being trapped into this this life. It left me dazzled and exhausted.

Didn't know really what to expect going along to see this, and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. Keaton plays his part very well indeed, and the supporting cast are great.

The visuals are quite mesmerizing too. Happy to recommend it.

The concept of the movie is absolutely fantastic and it is certainly a film about art and artists, a classical literal theme transferred to the screen with such masterful skill that you can't help but admire the art.

It is a brilliantly devised black comedy, full of sardonic humor but also a very specific viewpoint that allows the viewer to look into the mind of an artist, in this case both the actor and the director, as the border between the movie and reality, between what is actually the plot of the movie and what is the artistic idea of Iñárritu, is very fluid, sometimes even non-existent. Iñárritu actually utilizes a theatrical method, a characteristic of modern theatre, thereby destroying the classical border between several aspects - the film itself, the viewers, the director, the plot and the idea. It is a metaesthetical analysis of the visual arts and Iñárritu realized it masterfully.

The acting is also a very strong aspect of the movie. All of the actors fulfill their roles brilliantly, but you cannot escape from the magical interpretations of Edward Norton and Michael Keaton. Norton, one of my favourite actors, is absolutely amazing, is a cynic and a bohemian, a master of the theatre enjoying the praise of a master actor, of a true artist positioned above the more popular yet artistically weaker Michael Keaton, whose Riggan Thomson is trying to revitalize his career and find true artistic meaning through the theatre, an institution so familiar to Norton's brilliant Mike Shiner. It is an absolute shame that Norton found himself alongside the brilliant J.K. Simmons this year (a sure victor at the Oscars), because he undoubtedly delivered an Oscar-winning performance. The same goes for Michael Keaton, who, in addition to that, certainly delivered the role of his career. His Golden Globe-winning performance is an absolute hit, in every way adapted to the idea Iñárritu envisioned with this film and certainly an internal battle for Keaton himself, who had to wait up until now to deliver such a dramatically and artistically strong role. Riggan Thomson is a psychologically polarized actor, an ex-star realized through shallow superhero roles, looking to prove to the world and to himself that he is wroth something, that he is actually an actor. His internal struggle, his obsession and his self-devouring psyche - all of them brilliantly portrayed by the excellent Keaton who managed to give us a look into a very specific mental construction (I thought to myself - now I finally know what went through Heath Ledger's mind before his tragic death).

Iñárritu has also presented us with a very specific aesthetic in 'Birdman', a very gentle approach to the technical and visual realization of the film combined with a series of surreal elements that wonderfully add up to the concept itself, thereby creating a magnificent blend only a few selected directors can create.

To conclude, 'Birdman' is truly a wonderful movie with a very specific set of exceptional strengths that are masterfully combined with a strong crew and a powerful idea. It is a surrealist retelling of a psychological process often foreign to the common viewer, but nonetheless amazing and wonderful.

Very hard to do with the single long take camera moves. Technically very impressive. A good immersive movie with strong story that works fully on an audience? Not even. The director likes to think of himself as a challenging filmmaker, but really it's more about being pretentious and kissing the ass of a stuffy New York Broadway live theatre intelligentsia to get attention which it sure got. To make a movie with a strong narrative that moves viewers along is far harder. I like Michael Keaton and he's very good in a role made for him, but sorry this is not great. Watch now as the sheep of the Academy vote for it anyway. Expand

New York's background and temporal attitude was perfect to highlight the film's central topic of ignorance and egotism. Birdman is a must-see movie that demands we look at ourselves and others without judgement.

Realism and surrealism are excellently executed in this movie. Tastefully acted, The Virtue of Ignorance is a great look at what it is like to be an artist on stage and in television. Riggan is an insightful flawed protagonist, as a representation of the struggles of real life actors. His pain is not something the ordinary man would understand and his actions mirror his pain.

The cast acted tremendously well and careers were solidified and made with this film. I found myself laughing out loud at the incredibly dark writing and mesmerized by the raw and honest editing choices.

Birdman is many things but most importantly, it is a love story. A love story of a man's love for his ex-wife and daughter. The struggle to love himself, his art, and love, love itself.

It's not fair.

I love Raymond Carver, long takes, theatre, Batman, NYC rooftops and alleyways, the blending layers of self-referential fiction, delirious fantasy, the creative process, the insane logistics of run-on cinematography, the seamless assembly of shifting environments, stepping into unresolved mental spaces, demonstrations of solitary madness and the unbearable anticipation of being, being judged, being booed, un-being, unhinging, delusional uppers, existential downers, magic surrealism, telekinetic fury, dreams of flying, throwing tantrums, the fragile yet invincible ego, immaculately constructed chaos, the recurring climax of ending it all -- where the blazes is that blasted improvisational drumming coming from? -- oh there, and there, so absurd, don't stop, the shot must go on, the show must go on, "You are not important, get used to it," she said, but so much angst overwhelms him, tethered to a feathered fantasy, a nagging reminder of what once was, or could have been, refusing to believe it's too late to soar to former heights, yet grounded by time and gravity, trapped in a narrative, caged in a fabrication, "You're an actress, honey," says another, "you have no self-respect" and all actors are game, Keaton and Stone zoned-in, knowing the pain, pretending to not care or pretending to matter, failing to be authentic, acting over acting, meta-acting meta-fiction meta-filmed with a meta-critical message: yeah, we're all messed-up and meta-fµcked, but after shooting your nose to spite the ruse, by unmasking the unexpected virtue of ignorance, peeling off layers of pretence and self-importance, you just might find a momentary strain of pure, uncomplicated innocence.

It's not fair. I love this sh*t!

If you ever watch this movie be prepared to see the revival of Keaton. This is a man who has been hidden behind other characters for several years in movies like The Other Guys and Robocop. Now he is the centre of attention and the performance is so good it earned him a Oscar nomination. Keaton also already played Batman and he has become the forgotten Batman thanks to the new Dark Knight trilogy. That only makes his Birdman role more appropriate. I would be completely happy with Michael Keaton winning the Best Actor Oscar this year and it is well earned. There are some other great performances on here from Edward Norton who really surprised me for the first half of the movie and Emma Stone who really shows that she can take on a dramatic role. I will likely only see Birdman once, but I am still glad I watched it. This movie may lack action but there is still never a dull moment. Expand

Quem sou eu? Você é BIRDMAN.
A busca.

IMDb claims this movie is a comedy/drama which makes things even worse since the comedic parts are really awkward and do not fit in the movie at all. Finally I was really disappointed with the ending since the movie could have finished 10 minutes earlier during the final act of the play which may not seem a lot but it would really make a difference. The only enjoyable thing other than the pop-corn was the confrontation scene between Keaton and the play critic. I would suggest watching it only so you can form your own opinion about it. Expand

After seeing the horrible and over-hyperd Boyhood and the lackluster Gone Girl, this was a much needed glimmer of hope.

This film grabbed my attention from the get-go. It was a mish mosh of arthouse, big-budget, independent but with a theatre feel to it. I was about 5 mins in before I had to ask myself, 'Is this all one shot?!" The film flowed scene to scene effortlessly, giving the feeling of one continuous shot, a remarkable feat by director, cinematograher and editor (all deserving of awards). It gave a sort of theatre atmosphere to the film that brought you into their world and made you feel like a fly on the wall, observing but not intruding.

The dialogue was well-written and the acting performances all around were top notch. Michael Keaton is phenomenal, as he portrays an actor in the twilight and dwindling years of his career, trying to stay relevant and risking everything to do so. His alter-ego subconcious plays a significant role in his psyche that appears to affect the world around him. It gives us a glimpse into his world and allows us to better understand the character.

You can easily tell that a lot of planning, consideration, care and thought went into making this film. It's not a gimmick, but an amazing accomplishment by everyone involved in the making of. It's not a movie that needs to be explained or defended, it stands on it's own, delivers a clear message, but still leaves a little personal interpretation for the audience.

For those of us who grew up with Keaton films, there's the added nostalgia and links to his film past as the Batman and his alter-ego (Birdman) almost as a Beetlejuice feel to it. I can't say enough good things about his performance, watching him reminded me of what real acting should be and I have no doubt that his co-actors raised their game to this new standard.

The arthouse-like score blended the film together from beginning to end, giving a more anxious feeling and sense of urgency, appropriate to the scenes and story. There were few slow spots in the film, but were necessary for the audience to relax before bringing us back into the moment. The SFX were very well done and again, major kudos have to be given considering this appeared to be a single shot throughout (I'm still blown-away by it).

NYC was the perfect backdrop; the landscape and sounds virtually took me there and for 2 hours I forgot I wasn't.

This is a must-see film for anyone (except those who only like $200 million Michael Bay action/explosion-porn movies). Easily in my top 5 of all time

It ventures into the stage performance, film industry, the fight between the integrity and mind of the artists, the critics, the over bloating superheroes film in Hollywood; all are perfectly crafted into the life of an old actor who is struggling with his egoism in attempting to recover both his career and family. This journey of crisis, transformation, battling of stressful emotions and the inner powerful demon of himself are well played by Michael Keaton, thanks to the strong and loud jazz drum scores as well as magical, thrilling, ambitious style of delivering by Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu. The mind blowing and overwhelming development might make the audiences to feel that this film about art and life is imitating Nolan's style of cinematography, but the ambiguous ending has rather more complex which gives the opportunity to the audiences to decide whether to end it positively or negatively.
