It's ironic that in the script, Sorkin has Lucy criticize her showrunner for keeping a gag that she feels essentially says the audience is stupid, which is an unforgivable transgression. What are we to think Sorkin is saying to all of the fans of the original show watching his film by portraying that classic as absurdly hackneyed, stale and yes, even stupid? Expand

Still, I thought it would be worse. Nevertheless, the plot is hard to follow; the two timelines presented here make for a convoluted story, and sometimes it's hard to know when or where you are.

I didn't know about Lucille Ball or Desi Arnaz — the protagonists of the 'I Love Lucy' show —, but 'Being the Ricardos' gives you a clear idea of who these people were inside and outside the tv set. Nicole Kidman gives a fine performance, although I found the makeup very distracting. Javier Bardem is also great as Arnaz. Their chemistry just goes up the roof.

Unfortunately, I didn't find the story that interesting. Aaron Sorkin is a great writer, but not that good as a director.

Not Sorkin’s best script, it’s very jumpy. I also don’t love him as a director, he should give that a break after starting just 1-for-3. Well acted, though.

This inside look at a week of production of the legendary sitcom, as well as the lives of its two principal stars, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, is woefully unfocused, both in terms of what it's trying to say and the chronology in telling it. Worse, however, is the fact that there's not a lot here that's especially interesting. But perhaps the biggest issue with this production is the casting of Nicole Kidman as the iconic Lucy, turning in a mugging, self-conscious performance where viewers are not seeing "Lucille Ball" but "Nicole Kidman as Lucille Ball." That's unfortunate, given the commendable portrayal of Javier Bardem as Desi Arnaz, effectively showcasing the actor-producer's often-underappreciated efforts as the brains behind this operation, one that changed television history forever (even if one wouldn't necessarily get that from watching this film). It's often said in Hollywood that it's unwise to attempt to remake the classics -- or, in this case, to even attempt to re-create them. Expand

However, once past that, I really enjoyed this film. I'm not generally a huge Kidman fan but she does a fantastic job here. By the end, she is Lucy. Bardem has the easier task since Desi's character is the same on and off the set. The reviewer who gave this a 40 and all the user reviews giving it a thumbs down must have watched a different movie. Although it has some laughs, this is not actually a comedy but a slice of Desilu, off the set. All the minor characters were very good especially J K Simmons as William Frawley. I liked it a lot. Sorkins is a better writer than director and although so far his films have felt right enough, he has yet to do anything memorable in that regard.

Being the Ricardos is another attempt that manages to stay afloat because its script is good and its two lead actors deliver solid performances.

Even in the moments when it tries to be more complex than it can really handle, it doesn't collapse, let's just say it lacks more bite.

It deserves attention, of course, just don't expect anything special.

I liked how she stood up for herself and I thought that Javier Bardem also did well playing her husband, Desi. I can't say I know, or knew, too much about the show or actors themselves, as 'I Love Lucy' was never as successful in the UK as it was in the US but it was still an interesting film with some good dialogue and somewhat amusing scenes, as well as more serious societal themes being in play. Its perhaps a little bland/slow plot wise perhaps, hardly gripping stuff but its got good performances and is generally an ok watch regardless, so I'd say its still worth a watch, if it particularly interests you, otherwise perhaps not. The film details the start of the relationship between Ball and her husband and ends with the realization that her marriage is truly incapable of being saved. Meanwhile, in between all of this, we get a glimpse of how chaotic it was behind the scenes of the show and how hard they fought to not only keep things together but to keep pushing forward with their vision of how the show should be.

Kidman is fantastic, truly captivating as Ball and Bardem simply knock it out of the park as Arnaz. Both complement each other perfectly and really made this movie much more entertaining because of it. I don't understand the hate for this movie, I thought it was really good.

If I see a film from one of cinema's greatest working screenwriters, I'm probably going to end up enjoying it on the whole. "Ricardos" is no exception, featuring scenes upon scenes of kinetic dialogue, refreshing humor and some genuinely interesting commentary on a couple relevant issues here and there. These parts may not necessarily add up to much of a sum, however, as the depiction of Desi and Lucy tackling so many disparate issues within just a week's time kind of renders things feeling scattershot and -- not to mention -- preposterous. Kidman is fantastic, however, despite some questionable makeup and hairstyling that they made her perform through. The ending is a tad abrupt as well. Indeed, it's not Sorkin's finest work, but still eminently watchable. Expand

Sorkin signs another film thematising the importance of his own role as a screenwriter and of his own political commitment against recent or past forms of McCarthyism. This time the ("diarrheally logorrhoeic") rally invests the true story of a marriage in crisis: the accumulation of topics already addressed in abundance does not benefit any of them, also because the director insists with the defect of attributing more importance to words than to staging, to dialogues than to their audiovisual transposition.

The biggest problem with this movie for me was the nonlinear plot structure. There were flashbacks that felt unnecessary to the story's themes and events, and the inclusion of these scenes made the movie feel slightly disconnected. This was really unfortunate because I felt invested in the storyline and probably would've rated this film very highly if not for these moments.
