Disney's live action remake of the 1991 animated classic of the same name is a triumph on its own; a charming, confident, splendidly animated, unabashedly sweet, and flawlessly acted musical fairy tale, with plenty of heart on its sleeve.

The cast is mismatched: Lefou should have been played by Jack Black, Belle should have been played by another actress (Watson is a one-trick pony and it show so prominently) , Gaston is too much of a weakling. There is also far more animation in this "live action" than in the original cartoon but in the same time, both the cast and director managed to loose the lifelikeness of the original production (that is a pretty neat trick in itself). I give it a big fat 0 at it deserve little more than that, it is a mere lifeless derivative rehash. If only they had used ideas from the movie with Jean Marais, I may even had understood. But not even close: this one product is made to entertain consumers. Expand

Really brought nothing to the film, just a naked cash-grab in a scene-for-scene remake of the animated film. A year from now, nobody will remember this movie at all.

It was one of the animated instant classics to trigger the Disney Renaissance of the 1990s, defined an entire generation of Disney fans, set off some of the most iconic songs ever to grace the screen, was honored in several lists by the American Film Institute, was preserved in the National Film Registry the second year it was eligible (which is a huge deal), and was the first animated film in history to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture.

So no pressure or anything in remaking it, right?

Many of us were worried that this remake would just be a line-for-line remake of the original, but thankfully it’s not. Several updates to the story are actually a strong improvement to fill in the problems with the original. The whole village’s memory of the castle is erased by the enchantress, a contrast made much more blaring by a cursed eternal winter in the castle’s borders even while summer goes on in the village.

Belle’s father Maurice also has a more complex subplot that actively engages both Gaston and LeFou, and he is motivated by his collection of homemade paintings and inventions used to memorialize his family legacy. This includes a backstory on Belle’s mother, even if it adds virtually nothing to the plot.

Other minor details are added to motivate Belle further, such as teaching a younger village girl to read, only to be condemned by others in the village. The parents will also enjoy this little detail: Gaston is a former war hero, which gives his musical number a whole new flavor. They also would find this new take on the Beast somewhat compelling: he doesn’t even try to treat Belle decently as she first comes into the castle. He just keeps her in the prison, only to be moved into an appropriate bedroom without his consent or knowledge.

There are plenty of other small plot holes from the original that are explained here, as the characters make it blatantly clear. What I mean is, it is done like this: one character asks a question we all asked about the original, then another character simply answers the question. Then the plot moves on as if nothing happened. So no high-class writing to be found here.

Although when taking the whole sum of the product into consideration, the elements that remain the same compared to the original fall way, way short. The director of this live action adaptation, Bill Condon, who directed Dreamgirls and wrote the screenplay for Chicago, would presumably know all about how to do a musical properly. Although his skill is screaming to get out this time around, as nothing commands our sorrow for his reimagining of the beloved characters. With the exception of “Be Our Guest,” none of the musical numbers or recreated scenes match the energy or creativity of its animated counterpart. I’m not just referring to the fact that most to everyone’s singing voices are hard on the ears, but mainly to the fact that everything is rushed, especially the scene in the West Wing.

If you think that you would feel charmed and nostalgic while watching this, sorry—not happening. Maybe it works as a plot expansion of a previously established story, but as a standalone you couldn’t help but see the flaws. Belle even looks at the Beast more like she’s scowling than like she’s captivated by him. Then with Gaston, he doesn’t feel like a jerk at all, as in his first meeting with Belle, he doesn’t chuck her book into the mud- but actually hands her flowers! Flowers! From the guy we’re supposed to hate! It’s little details like this that will halt any true joy or tears. But what else would you expect when a remake is produced by a studio that cares more about social correctness than casting actual French actors for a film set in France?

Speaking of which, you may all be wondering at this point, “what about the exclusively gay moment with LeFou? Should I worry about it harming my kids?” Well, I can tell you this: You have absolutely nothing to worry about. It’s a two second moment at the very end that is just as subtle as it is super easy to toss onto the cutting room floor. In fact, Josh Gad puts in just the right dose of humor and charm in his interpretation of LeFou, and he actually can sing pretty darn well! So you’ll end up loving his character by the end, whether or not you agree with the homosexual lifestyle.

Although if you ask me, this remake was never needed to be made. Yes, it did satisfy many of the problems that people have complained about for twenty-five years about the beloved animated classic, but it’s not like this predictable fantasy is doing anything new or risky. If anything, it’s just going to remind us of how much more moving and charming the original is, and we can sleep easy at night now knowing that some plot holes were filled without the animated film having to explain it for us.

The original was superb, this one is a soulless mess. It throws in some very minor plot tweaks and additions from the original, but otherwise it's hard to deny this is just a cash grab nostalgia play, like an increasingly large percentage of Hollywood's output seems to be. The singing is unimpressive (frankly these actors don't have the voices for it compared to the original renditions) and Belle never really sells you on having fallen for the Beast, she seems like she's only going through the motions. The best I can say about it is that it really helps you fully appreciate just how well done the original was by contrast. Watch that again instead of overpaying for this flash-but-hollow dreck.

PS: Homosexual intimacy doesn't belong in family-friendly films, period. Shame on Disney for trying to hamhandedly crowbar controversial alternative-lifestyle elements like that into a lighthearted movie for children. That's not what anyone goes to a movie like this to see.

Mainly because they think they're betterA lot of women are begging to watch the live-action version of Beauty and the Beast which I guess Disney is doing live-action films based on the animated films which Disney has made in the past decade. Mainly because they think they're better than the animated classics or they're not as good as the animated one's. Maybe I'm one of those people who think they're not as good as the original's. But now my sister put me a digital download of the live-action of Beauty and the Beast and had me watching all the way through. So, what did I think of it? Well, I gotta say, I love it! I am so dazzled and thrilled by this film. My sister Jade made me watch it because she thinks it's beautiful and dazzling. Even I thought about as well. The colours from this film are absolutely gorgeous and the CGI is also good as well. The songs are still the same, not as good as the original. Like Jade showed me the song called ''Gaston'' where Gaston and Lefou singing but some lyrics in this don't match up like ''I needed encouragement, thank you Lefou.'' ''Well, there's no one as easy to bolster as you!'' and they're dancing on the table which reminds me of the theatre play based on this movie. Not to mention that Jade said that the acting is brilliant. And she showed ''Be Our Guest'' with some absolute dazzling colours in it. It's just unbelievable! The rest of the songs are memorable like the original but two of them are not in the original. Or is it three of them? Three of the songs are called ''How Does A Moment Last Forever'' ''Days In The Sun'' and therefore ''Evermore''. ''Beauty and the Beast'' is sung by Emma Thompson who is the voice of Mrs Potts and the ending credits Ariana Grande and John Legend. Right now I can't that song out of my head where Beast played by Dan Stevens singing ''Evermore'', believing the fact that the song in the end credits is sung by Josh Groban. It reminded me of Quasimodo singing ''Out There'' from The Hunchback of Notre Dame. I can't stand new songs but ''Evermore'' is the one that will be stuck in my head for weeks the same way ''Gaston'' will be, along with the other songs from this. Even the music sounded exactly the same, (like the most part) from beginning to end. It's Alan Menken. I think Ariana Grande and John legend will be the next Celine Dion and Peabo Bryson, much like Celine Dion had already sung ''How Does A Moment Last Forever''. No matter what I can say, the songs will be stuck in my head forever much like the original like ''Gaston'' where the lyrics are hilarious like the part which I've been singing along to is this ''As a specimen, yes, I'm intimidating!'' and the funniest part which I never expected is this, ''Too much?'' ''Yep!'' Haha, that has me laughing. I I have been teasing Simon and Meg about the live-action version by saying ''When it was announced it was Beauty and the Beast. Many fell into despair and lost all hope, for who could ever learn to love a Disney reboot. However, from one critic, he has a bigger question in mind.'' ''What the fxxk is the point of rebooting Beauty and the Beast?'' I won't go in too much detail what I just said to tease Meg and Simon. Great cast in this like Dan Stevens, Ewan McGregor, Ian McKellen, A women's interest Luke Evans, Josh Gad and my favourite actor, Kevin Kline. It's directed by Bill Condon, the same guy who directed The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 and 2, which many people think The Twilight films are absolutely sxxt and god-awful. I don't understand that Lefou is gay would be a controversial. I didn't even see it, but who cares. The box office results are absolutely mind-blowing. It earned more than $ 1.263 billion over the $160 million budget while the original earned $425 million. That's a damn impressive feet! Well, I gotta tell you, guys, I really love this movie. While I still prefer the original animation, the visuals are good, the characters are the same, the songs are unforgettable much like the animated version, it has great singing voices, the acting is the best and the ending is just beautiful. Meg Gummerson and my sister Jade Oakey is a huge fan of this movie. Meg Gummerson, if you're looking at this, I just want you to know, Congratulations. And you, Jade, All I'm going to say to you, Jade, is thank you for making watch the live-action version of Beauty and the Beast. You made me smile all the way through the film. God Bless England. As punishment for theAn enchantress disguised as an old beggar woman arrives at a castle during a ball and offers the host, a cruel and selfish prince, a rose in return for shelter from a storm. When he refuses, she reveals her identity. As punishment for the prince's lack of compassion, the enchantress transforms him into a beast and his servants into household objects, then erases the castle, himself and his servants from the memories of their loved ones and everyone else in the town. She casts a spell on the rose and warns the prince that the spell will only be broken if he learns to love another, and earn their love in return before the last petal falls, or he will remain a beast forever.
Some years later, in the small town of Villeneuve, Belle, the book-loving daughter of an inventor named Maurice, dreams of adventure. She constantly brushes off advances from Gaston, an arrogant former soldier, as he is not the type of man Belle wishes to marry. On Maurice's way to a convention and lost in the forest, he seeks refuge in the Beast's castle, but the Beast imprisons him for stealing a rose from his garden as a gift to Belle. When Maurice's horse returns without him, Belle ventures out in search for him, and finds him locked in the castle dungeon. Belle tricks both her father and the Beast by asking for a simple hug goodbye from her father, she pushes him out and locks herself in the dungeon. The Beast agrees to let her take her father's place and forces Maurice to leave immediately.
Belle befriends the castle's servants; candelabra footman Lumiere, clock majordomo Cogsworth, featherduster maid Plummette, teapot housekeeper Mrs Potts, and her teacup son Chip. They invite her to a spectacular dinner. When she wanders into the forbidden west wing and finds the rose, the Beast scares her into the woods. Belle is ambushed by a pack of wolves, but the Beast rescues her, becoming injured in the process. As Belle nurses his wounds, a spark develops between them. The Beast shows Belle a gift from the enchantress, a book that transports readers wherever they want. Belle uses the book to visit her childhood home in Paris, where she discovers a plague doctor mask and realizes that she and her father were forced to leave when her mother succumbed to the plague.
In Villeneuve, Maurice fails to convince the other villagers of the Beast and Belle's imprisonment. Gaston, seeing rescuing Belle as an opportunity to win her hand in marriage, agrees to help Maurice. When Maurice learns of his ulterior motive and rejects him, Gaston abandons him to be eaten by the wolves. Maurice is rescued by the town hermit Agathe, but when he tells the townsfolk of Gaston's crime and is unable to provide solid evidence, Gaston convinces them to send Maurice to an insane asylum.
After sharing a romantic dance with the Beast, Belle discovers her father's predicament using a magic mirror. The Beast releases her to save Maurice, giving her the mirror to remember him with. At Villeneuve, Belle reveals the Beast in the mirror to the townsfolk, proving her father's sanity. Realizing that Belle loves the Beast, a jealous Gaston claims she has been charmed by dark magic, and has her thrown into the asylum carriage with her father. He rallies the villagers to follow him to the castle to slay the Beast before he curses the whole village. Inside the asylum carriage, Belle tells her father that she knows what happened to her mother and showed him the rose rattle she took from her magical visit to their old, abandoned home. Maurice and Belle escape, and Belle rushes back to the castle.
During the battle, Gaston abandons his companion LeFou, who then sides with the servants to fend off the villagers. Gaston attacks the Beast in his tower, who is too depressed to fight back, but regains his spirit upon seeing Belle return. He defeats Gaston, but spares his life before reuniting with Belle. However, Gaston fatally shoots the Beast from a bridge, which then collapses as the castle began to crumble, leading Gaston to fall to his death. The Beast then dies as the last petal falls, and the servants become inanimate.
As Belle tearfully professes her love to the Beast, Agathe reveals herself as the enchantress and undoes the curse, repairing the crumbling castle, and restoring the Beast and servants to their human forms and to the villagers' memories. The Prince and Belle host a ball for the kingdom, where they dance happily.

The clear use of auto tune while not too everyone's taste does not take away from the experience. The cast choices are spot on. Emma Watson had a insurmountable task of capturing belle and she does bring all the required emotions to the role. Other notable cast such as Emma Thompson had a great spin on the Angela Lansbury classic that was Mrs. Potts. Ultimately all Disney had to do was take the emotional journey that was the original; amplify it, and modernize it.They achieved that as apparent by the drones of people who are seeings and enjoying this film. Directly once the movie starts, we get a better explanation of the enchantress's curse on Beast and the castle. Gaston is more evil in this adaption. In the original, he seemed to act like any normal man would do to protect his town and grieving over rejection. Here, he enters the film as a cheap dirtbag who will do whatever it takes for his lust over Belle. Even if that means pushing around his best friend, LeFou. That being said, LeFou is great in this movie. LeFou has so much new likable dialogue. He even gets development during the course of the film.

Tons of other characters have great new events, too. This includes Belle's mother's backstory. Beast even gets a song.

Once you watch this version, you won't want to watch the animated version ever again!

Overall, I felt the casting was right on point as far as Gaston, Maurice and Beast. I do agree that Jack Black would have made the perfect LeFou though! Emma Watson did her best, but unfortunately for most people, she will always be Hermione from Harry Potter. Expand

The story stayed true to the original but they revealed some things that were not revealed in the original. Some of the parts with Lefou and Gaston were mildly uncomfortable but the scenes in the town were subpar at the greatest anyways. The real show stealer was Evermore and Be Our Guest they were both constructed so beautifully. Also I thought I would be disappointed with Mrs. Potts, Cogsworth, ETC but I was actually impressed with their design. A lot better than I thought it would be. I thought the cast was perfect, and the musical numbers were enjoyable. Not quite as good as Disney's other live action remakes, like The Jungle Book and Alice in Wonderland, but still enjoyable.

Only beauty would conquer the beast!

This is not the first time screen adaptation, that means every one of us have seen either version of the films according to what generation we belong. Mine was the animated one and then there was a modern-day version called 'Beastly'. Not to forget there's a recent French version made on the big scale that I yet to watch. So it's not about the story at all. It is about the quality of film, performances, and particularly how the modern technology used to narrate the story.

Like the recent Disney's live-actions 'Cinderella', 'The BFG', 'The Jungle Book' and many more, this is another excellently adapted film from the book. Though visually it tried to be true to the original, and that's absolutely great thinking. Because in this modern world, we all try something new out of the original contents for sometimes to mess it up.

Excellent casting, the beauty was the best pick among all. The graphics were awesome. The CGI beast was flawless, yet that usual dark and cloudy atmosphere helped it to be so perfect. Since it is listed under Musical, I was worried about the songs. I truly don't like modern Musicals. But this film was not completely filled with songs. Yes, there were like half a dozen, but good ones. Retained the songs from the 1991 film, and in addition three new were composed.

I did not think the Disney would get away with consecutive successes. Great achievement, and their attempts were very precautionary on their every step. Now this is Disney's second highest grossed film ever and first in live-action. The film was for all ages unlike old Disney films. That's the best thing about the modern Disney films that they have adopted. Definitely recommended for at least once watch it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Emma Watson does not have the warmth of Belle in her expressions, the added new songs are unnecessary, as well as certain scenes, such as the enchantress, how the prince became a Beast, how Belle's mother died, etc. Also, Luke Evans is handsome to many, but to me, he's not Gaston; he's not intimidating like the character was in the original. The CGI is pretty awful, Mrs. Potts & Chip look horrible, but Beast looks the worst. He looks like a man who has grown extra hair on his face; & people have compared his horns to those of a goat's. I think they changed his character, because he's not scary as Beast in this live-action version. I'm also not impressed with Emma Watson's yellow dress which is supposed to be Belle's, but looks horrible compared to the original, it does not have a full skirt & has a different design on the top; the sleeves are also nothing like the original. The other costumes were well-made. I don't like Ariana Grande & John Legend's version of "Tale as Old as Time", I feel they should've chosen someone else to sing it. The only good things I can say about it are the costumes (except the yellow dress) & the set design, the scenery was beautiful! But as for everything else, this does absolutely no justice to the original. Expand

Really liked this film! It's rare that you see people in the theater clap.

A lot of people complain that this is a rehash, and yes, they're right. But, it's a really good rehash. The director and screenwriters were wise enough to stick with the key points of the original film while adding some new stuff that really worked. More background and humanization are given to characters causing the film to come across as a little darker and more mature than the original. The actual romance between Beast and Belle feels so much stronger. It also fixes plot holes and pacing issues from the original. One weak spot is that this film has so many characters that the director has some trouble juggling the more supporting characters.

The film is beautiful. Has a brightly colored, ornate French fairy tale look. The redesigns to the enchanted object characters are really unique. The computer animation is impressive. Cinematography is good, but I do feel that some of the camera angles could have been improved upon. Contains all the original designs. A couple of songs have some slight lyric changes, but I feel that they suited the new context of the film. They did drop the Gaston reprise, due to plot changes. I'm disappointed but understand their reasons. There are 4 new songs in this, which I liked. The song Evermore is especially good. One downside of the new films is that 3 out of four of them are ballads and I kind of wish there were more dynamic differences between songs.

Cast is great. Special credit should be given to Josh Gad, a living imp, and Dan Stevens, who brings so much emotion and nuance to the role.

Rehash or no I recommend it to everyone.

Utilizing the“Beauty and the Beast” was originally a black and white French film drama that went on to be made into a number of animated feature films and, now, Disney has produced a live action musical with the same story and characters. Utilizing the music of Alan Menken, the lyrics of the late Howard Ashman and those of his successor, the talented Tim Rice, the film stars Emma Watson (Beauty), Dan Stevens (Beast/Prince), Emma Thompson, Ewan McGregor and Audra McDonald in this fantasy tale that captures the charm and beauty of the past films but with choreography and orchestrations that dazzle the eyes and ears of its audience even more. As difficult as remakes can be to reach the level of its predecessors, , this new version directed and co-written by Bill Condon equals the task and is a pure joy to watch and behold. The simplicity of the story coupled with awesome magical visual effects and a score that Mr. Menken can well be proud of make this a theatrical experience for all to enjoy. Although reluctant at first to go to “another revival” of this time honored classic, I’m so very glad I did. I give the film a 9 rating and recommend it to all who still believe that movies that entertain and leave us with a good feeling at its conclusion are to be valued, respected and, most of all, seen. It's beautiful to look at and the cast members are all solid in their roles. However, I never found myself thinking that this film needed to be made and nothing about it really built on the existing mythology that enhanced it. Take the 2015 Cinderella, while it was a recreation of the original, the filmmakers made the characters stronger and built on the story to make it a more solid movie. That really isn't done here that's impactful to the story and in the end, it did just feel like a recreation of a great movie. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I can't even put into words how disappointed I was about this movie, I knew it was going to be disappointed when I first seen the previews the CGI was jaw dropping and I don't mean that in a good way and the fact that Emma Watson was cast to play the lovely Belle was laughable but still I had hope because Beauty and the Beast is by far my favorite Disney Movie, it's in my top 5. The main issue I had with this film aside from the casting was the story tale itself. Disney for some reason decided to combined the old Folklore with their Disney version of how the beast became the beast and it truly made no sense because they left out key details in both. Some Backstory: In the old Folklore of Beauty and the Beast, Belle's father was a merchant who had 3 sons and 3 daughters the youngest being Belle, Belle was loved by her brothers and her father but her two sisters despised her. One day the merchant asked his girls what they wanted him to bring back the two sisters said money and jewelry but Belle only requested a single Rose. Which brings us to how the father met the beast just like in the movie the beast kept himself hidden and he fed the father and let him relax in his chair and rest and as the father was leaving he noticed the rose garden remembered Belle's request and picked off a rose which enraged the beast and so he showed himself and basically told the father that he was taking advantage of his kindness which is why he became the beasts prisoner but he did allow him to go home to say goodbye to his family which brings us to how Belle decided to trade places with her father which imprisoned him in the place the brothers and the fathers profusely rejected the idea and were actually going to slay the beast but Belle wouldn't allow them to do that and instead took her fathers place which made the brothers and father sad but the sisters were thrilled. The beast and Belle got along quite fine and developed trust and love for each other and he
actually allowed her to go back home to see her family as long as she wasn't gone more than 3 days, well leave it to the bitter sisters to put a stop to this because they wanted Belle dead/ locked away with the beast so they convinced Belle to stay longer hoping that this would set the beast off it took a bit of persuading and Belle stayed for a week and the beast grew weak and Belle could sense that something was wrong so she rushed back to the beast who was basically dying and she was crying over him and professing her love, she kisses him and the beast turns into a prince they get married the brothers and father rejoice and the evil bitter sisters well Belle turns them into the stone - The End.

That's how the Folklore goes so as you can see aside from a few key parts Disney took bits and pieces and meshed it up with the animated tale and they added a whole new element which was Belle's mother and the magic book that takes them to any point and time in the world which was just stupid and unnecessary, we could all assume that Belle's mother was dead we didn't need to know what she died of anyone could've guessed small pox or even chlamydia I mean hello they didn't have medicine people were dying from the common cold for Christ sake it was just stupid and nobody cares! This live action remake was absolutely dreadful and who was the ugly dude that played the part of Gaston? What about him was rugged or handsome he looked like a prissy prep school boy if you ask me! Even the enchanted castle and characters were lackluster in this remake it was all around disappointing and they added new songs that nobody knew who does that?! So in the end I'm sure people will watch but as a true fan of beauty and the beast both folklore and animation this live action remake was a let down in a big way.

Most of what I was hearing about it in interviews and news was gimmicky tricks and passes at incorporating modern changes sounded false and not genuine. While watching the film I discovered I was correct, a lot of what I was promised was not delivered. Unlike the usual standard of vocal performance in a disney movie, this film had some lower points I wasn't expecting. My opinions of the cast are very mixed, I was quite surprised by ewan mcgreggor but let down by luke evans. The beast doesn't translate perfectly into live action, but dan stevens work really helped make this a more believable creature. I didn't believe emma watson was anything but an acting performance, there was very little truth in her and i thought this was the flattest part of the film. I was quite intrigued by some of the new scenes not featured in the disney original but by the end of the film they felt contrived and unnecessary. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was somewhat excited to see this movie only to be disappointed as soon as i heard Emma Watson was cast as belle. I don't think in all honesty she can act whatsoever, i feel like her performance as Belle was just basically Emma renamed for the production, as in Harry Potter she was very suited to the role however i felt that character also was not acting it was simply herself but a snotty know it all. Emma certainly brought no joy or passion to the movie, emotions none existent, song very flat the best part was Gaston and Le Fou but even Luke Evans wasn't that great, he was somewhat okay but there was not enough ego for Gaston. Scenes, Added and none existent; a slave to all original Disney movies the fact that songs, scenes were added whilst other scenes from the original were missed leaves it very poor. Gaston doesn't ask Le fou to strike up the band for her proposal, it simply doesn't happen. The opening scene was unnecessary Lumiere looked like a cheap Monopoly piece, not like the cute one from the cartoon that looks like hers wearing a turtle neck, the furniture ect... weren't as cute looking like the original i might expect too much but the CGI for the beast was exactly that, too much! Added songs killed my soul i got bored quickly the back story for belle wasn't that needed. I felt like an original story was changed as if it was from a different perspective like Malificient but that film was great! That was the same story with a slight twist not something changed and over sold. I am really gutted this film turned out the way it has. Lets hope they don't flatten anything else we have like they did with Bad and the boring. Expand

Very well made with great music and fitting actors. I didn't like some minor choices in the end of the movies and the end is a bit to cheesy but that doesn't stop the movie for being great and remaining a classic for new generations.

The movie covers what you'd expect it to, while explaining the main character's back story. I was under the impression that there had been some backlash due to one of Disney's first gay characters. The implication is there, but it's handled in the perfect way, where many people may miss it altogether unless they are deliberately keeping an eye out for it. Conservative parents parents, no need to worry, the film isn't going to turn your child gay. I could write pages on how this movie is great and why, but I'll just say this, it's a good movie, go see it. Expand

There’s no question that the animated version is better than this remake, but sure we all knew that already didn’t we? From her opening song Emma Watson seemed horribly miscast, her voice auto tuned to within an inch of its life was very disappointing, however as the story progressed she did manage to win me over. Her relationship with the Beast felt genuine and there was strong chemistry between Watson and Dan Stevens. Luke Evans was a definite show stealer, perfectly channelling the essence of Gaston and perhaps the best thing in the entire movie. The only character that didn’t seem to live up to the standard was Ewan McGregor and his horrendous attempt at a French accent and if you thought listening to a bad French accent was annoying you should hear him sing with it. Cringe.
But why oh why Disney did you feel the need to add mediocre songs to an otherwise perfect set list? There is one additional song in particular and if you’ve seen the movie then you know what I’m talking about. It was unbelievably out of place and upset the pace of the movie. So unfortunately for me this disrupting the pace of the story happened too often and I was left sitting there thinking the animated version is a far superior movie and the only reason for this remake is the money which is has certainly made in buckets.
We all know the story and what should have been a dramatic and emotional last act was simply bland. There was no emotion so although I did enjoy a lot of this movie it’s just not as good as it should have been. For all the diehard Disney fans there’s no recommendation because no doubt you’ve already seen this but for everyone else maybe watch the animated version instead.

I had lots of nostalgic, emotional and fun moments. I felt that there ware some unnecessary jokes, Gaston was a bit polite in the beginning but the most important thing was that the plot now explains a lot of unasnwered questions from the original animation (no spoilers). The acting could be better, the soundtracks are legendary and overall i think it was an amazing movie! Expand

Well, on the one hand I like the fact that it’s a nice re-creation of the original film, which I enjoyed. The downside is that that is also its biggest weakness. It doesn’t really feel like a new film, it just feels like a repeat, which would be fine for a stage show, but not an entire movie. Especially considering that Jungle Book and Cinderella did a much better job updating their stories. I get a sense that Beauty and the Beast has not been around long enough to really warrant an update since the original one still holds up, there are not that many issues with it and it narratively is still as relevant now as it was upon its release in the 1990’s and it’s so evident here, every moment you are seeing something that is in the original film, you are getting a sense that it was done much better there and it really makes you feel that the minor changes and additions feel like they detract from the film more than they add. Again, it’s not to say it’s bad. The actors do a decent job, the effects are pretty good and the set design is fantastic, I expect to be seeing this film nominated in several of the technical categories at next year’s Oscars. However, to me, it just feels rather ‘been there, done that, and it was much better the first time’. I don’t hate this movie, in fact, I kind of like it on a few levels and I wouldn’t object to seeing it again as I suspect this is probably going to become a mainstay of British TV at Christmas. However, I can’t fully recommend Beauty and the Best, especially if you enjoyed the first film. It’s worth it for curiosity and you will get a good film for the price value, but you are not getting a great film Expand

If that seems harsh, that's because it is and deservedly so. If the best this movie has to offer is a few fixes to an animated film's flimsy plot, and a complimentary "gay" scene, what's the point? The music is intact, though we already had that. The beast, set-pieces, and overall production design are believable but not enough that the animated film, with its whimsy and charm, will be forgotten any time soon.

Emma Watson is a perfect Belle, but ultimately it doesn't matter. This film is what it is. It's not a bad movie in most respects, there is plenty of good craftsmanship on display, but it isn't art and it doesn't aspire to be. It's what a cheeseburger would taste like in purgatory.

The film is at its best when it creates the amazing musical numbers of the original, both visually and musically, especially the new music additions, especially the tune Evermore that brilliantly provides Dan Steven's Beast his own sorrowful tune. The film is only hindered by the dragging out certain musical numbers and elements, mostly just to provide the film an acceptable run time. And of course the original will always hold a charm that will always put it a notch above its live action counterpart. As its own interpretation, however, each character is casted perfectly, especially Josh Gad as LeFou, while bringing the beauty of the original to life in amazing special effects, and dazzling musical numbers. Beauty and the Beast should easily take place as one of the best family films of the year. Expand

Ok. Live-action version of "Beauty and the Beast". What works in a cartoon, does NOT work in live-action.
You all know the story, we got this Prince dude. He's like all shallow and superficial and only likes pretty girls. And the supposed message of the movie is that true beauty lies inside. Which is actually crap in and of itself, but let's not delve into that right now. How this movie goes about delivering that message about inner beauty? First, Beautiful Enchantress. Has to be beautiful. Cause if it was ugly enchantress that turned Prince into Beast, that's just cruel. But if she's beautiful then she must be kind and it all must be some kinda lesson. Next. The Beast. Oh come on! You call THAT "The Beast"?! Its a goddamn big fluffy anthropomorphic lion with cute horns. An animated Beast was scarier! There is no real challenge in falling in love with him once he stops being a total dickwad. Enchantress should've turned him into a friggin Alien monster! See if Belle could drop a kiss on that mucus dripping mug! And anyway. Are we teaching Belle about importance of inner beauty? The Belle. Ok. So the main reason for Enchantress to put a spell on The Beast was to teach him a lesson that a pretty face is not all that important and all that "don't judge the book by its cover" crap. Enter Emma Watson. Come on! I would read through any book with that kinda cover! Even if it was full with boring "data reconfiguration and statistical analysis" reports! What kind of a lesson is The Beast learning? That if you are:
1. Big and powerful
2. Own a castle
3. Not a total jerk (this is why its a fairy tale, in real life if you got the fist two covered, you can be a jerk)
Then you still get the pretty girl, even if you got a "setback" of looking like a big cute lion with curly horns. Anyway, you still turn into pretty boy after she plops a smoochie on your hairy face.
What is the lesson learned here? Come on, really? To really get the message across, Belle should've been the fugliest girl in the village, and The Beast should've stayed in beastly form, no matter how many kisses.
That stuff should've remained animated! Was way easier to suspend disbelief.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Apologetically lavish and over the top. This is a movie that is meant to enchant and entertain. The meticulously designed rococo castle is stunning, and the cast of furniture is truly magical while remaining realistic. This movie doesn't try to be something it's not, it's highs are very high and it does achieve some real emotional depth (the windmill, and the frantic sadness of the furniture at the end when they temporarily die). I've been so sick of the dark remakes and this stays true to the tone of the original while delivering true doses of honest joy. Alan Menken is amazing of course and all the music is exquisitely arranged and produced. The only downside for me was the heavy autotone which from time-to-time took me out the enchanted and magical world this movie so easily puts me in. Expand

Sure, the handful of new songs don't exactly land as hard as the greatest hits do. And sure, a tad of the original's warmth and endearment may have gotten lost in the shuffle. But, as far as being a live-action remake of one of the greatest animated films of all time is concerned, Bill Condon's "Beauty And The Beast" does what it needs to do. It offers an updated, yet appropriate visual interpretation of the whimsical fairy tale at hand. It references and pays respectful homage to the many iconicisms that made the 1991 original so unforgettable. And, most importantly, it still maintains a level fun and enjoyment that can at least hold an anthropomorphic candle to that of all Disney classics. Indeed, this might actually be Disney's finest live-action remake yet, in my completely subjective opinion. Color me surprised. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. An EXCELLENT adaptation of the mixture of original story, Disney animated feature, and stage musical. The effectiveness in the live-action retelling occurs when many of the "plot holes" and issues are addressed. Where is Belle's mother? What happened exactly with the Enchantress? Whey doesn't ANYONE ever wander ove rto the castle? All of these (and more) are addressed intelligently and thoughtfully. The story never feels forced or rushed and the songs are woven seamlessly into the story. The newer songs don't add as much as those from the stage version, but it's understandable why the newer mater is in the film. They are shorter and really move the narrative along. The performances by Dan Stevens (Beast) and Emma Watson (Belle). Their natural chemistry and connection really effectively display the growing attraction and the CHOICE Belle is making to stay and help. Their work together was incredible. Putting in twice the performances to fully form this amazing character paid off. You can tell that this is a real man acting within the beastly confines. Stevens creates a wonderful character (on par with many of the master Andy Sirkus). The Beast has depth and feeling and the effect is ohly enhances by Ms. Watson's nuanced performance. She gives a smart, relateable, and sensitive performance as Belle. THIS is the girl I want my daughter to emulate. The household objects were all lovingly voiced by some of the best actors in Hollywood. Ewan McGregor (Lumiere), Ian McKellan (Cogsworth), Emma Thompson (Mrs. Potts), Stanley Tucci (Cadenza), Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Plumette), Audra McDonald (Mdm. Garderobe) and newcomer Nathan Mack. At moments the objects felt a little stagnant and I think that it was just lost in translation a little, but the vocal work was exceptional. This is a movie for fans and it does not disappoint. Come and enjoy this wonderful feast! Expand

'Beauty and the Beast' (1991) is without a doubt, as close to a perfect Disney animated film as you could get... so perfect that it became the first animated feature to be nominated for the "Best Picture" Academy Award. Not to mention that with 'Cinderella' (2015) and 'The Jungle Book' (2016) turning out to be surprisingly good, there were more reasons to get excited. Now I'm not sure if it was my expectations that did this to me, but I found Disney's live-action, and arguably more modern, take on this "Tale as old as time" to be mostly okay! I'm not going to waste my time summarizing the plot as I'm sure everybody should have seen the original film by now, so I'm just going to explain what I liked and what didn't work out so well for me. What I liked was the choice of actors and their roles; Emma Watson, best known for playing the bookworm and intelligent Hermione Granger in the "Harry Potter" franchise, fits the role of Belle since these two characters are not that different, so it seems. Her singing, admittedly, does sound auto-tuned - especially when she hits the high notes - but it's not bad. She did her best, and that's admirable. Dan Stevens ('Downton Abbey') plays the Beast very well too, with enough anger and arrogance to make him almost no different to his animated counterpart. Luke Evans and Josh Gad share terrific chemistry as Gaston and LeFou, and Gad's version of the "Gaston" song sounds eerily similar to the original version from 1991... clearly Gad thrives in playing Disney sidekicks (many of you may remember him as Olaf the snowman in 'Frozen'). Ewan McGregor ('Trainspotting' and 'Star Wars') surprised me as Lumiere, a role I didn't think he would play well, but, his version of "Be Our Guest" is something I wouldn't mind listening to again. He shares funny chemistry with Ian McKellen as Cogsworth, not to mention Emma Thompson is fantastic as Mrs. Potts, and her version of the enchanting "Beauty and the Beast" number is also something worth downloading. The production design of this film cannot be faulted as well, much like 'Cinderella' (2015) two years ago, it's very lavish and great to look at. Now for the not-so-good things. The movie spends a lot of time trying to be too much like its animated counterpart, shot-by-shot some scenes look similar, the dialogue is also very much the same, yet the execution of these lines don't sound as natural as they should have. If just the musical numbers, the lyrics, remained similar to the original, that's fine... but 80% of the dialogue in this movie, maybe more, was just from the original. And they don't have the same beat...

The lead characters, played by Emma Watson and Dan Stevens, two gifted young actors, unfortunately for me, lacked a bit of chemistry. I didn't feel as if there were any spark or emotional intensity like their animated versions. This isn't a problem with their acting, I think it has to do with the script and the editing execution. What I did like was the near ending, the way they executed the last petal falling from the rose, and how the characters react to that I thought was emotionally heavy. I'll give director Bill Condon credit for trying to be as respectful to the original movie as possible, but focus on the like-able characters, don't worry too much about making look aesthetically similar to the original by using the same camera-work. The reasons why 'Cinderella' (2015) and 'The Jungle Book' (2016) worked so well was because they didn't concentrate too much on being similar to the original, they still made it about character, and why these stories were so important. Those remakes were able to stand on their own without the need to watch their original versions. 'Beauty and the Beast' however, it seems wants to be compared to the original, so much so that it tries to be similar in both camera-work and dialogue. But the characters come second nature... This isn't an insulting remake like Tim Burton's 'Alice in Wonderland' (2010) or a dull and excruciatingly ludicrous one like 'Maleficent' (2014) (a movie I found difficult to sit through), this is something fans should see. See it for the music, the production design, and just the overall nostalgia. But don't expect a "Best Picture"-level movie... leave that to the original 1991 animated classic.

But, I was never comparing it to someHaving never seen the original animated film, or at least not remembering having seen it, my expectations were not too high for Beauty and the Beast. Do not get me wrong, I never thought it would be bad. But, I was never comparing it to some childhood classic that filled me with nostalgia every time I thought of watching the film. Instead, I saw this film in a vacuum. Unfortunately, it is still a mixed bag. At times, you can feel that fairy tale magic that is promised. Other moments provide sensory overload or are complete filler and wholly unnecessary. The end result is a potion that both enchants and befuddles in near equal measure.

From its very first frame, Beauty and the Beast shows its tedious footing between grating and magical. Its opening sequence of the Beast/Prince Charming (Dan Stevens) getting cursed by an enchantress has both incredible special effects and preposterous make-up. It is well applied, but it seems too exuberant and practically flamboyant with how much make-up the Prince is wearing to his party. That said, the scene still imbues the sense of mystery and magic necessary for the film and its immediate follow-up, the performance of the song "Belle", really hits the mark. Emma Watson's singing is lovely as Belle as she goes through her small French village and the various villagers express their reservations about Belle and her quirky bookworm behavior. It is a real charmer and is a song that gets the proceedings off to a terrific musical beginning, quickly displaying why this film's music is beloved by so many.

Unfortunately, the film then takes some poor turns. In its performance of "Gaston", a loud and incredibly well-choreographed musical number mostly performed by LeFou (Josh Gad), Gaston's (Luke Evans) closest companion, the film hits a real sour note. The song is simply too much. Compared to the more restrained staging of "Belle", "Gaston" is over-the-top and further maligned by an awful joke about the spelling of his name and LeFou's illiteracy. At this point, I was wondering if it was a mistake and the film would not be nearly as good as hoped. These fears were realized when we reach the Prince's castle. While the banter between Lumiere (Ewan McGregor) and Cogsworth (Ian McKellen) was immediately appealing, the arrival at the castle is marked by a few bad moments. One, when Belle is shown her room and the camera does a whip pan. Early in the film, during the performance of "Belle", I noticed some quick camera movements that immediately bothered my eyes. However, I had ignored them because I figured that I was simply a bit tired. Sadly, this eye shattering whip only served to make my strained eyes scream out in anguish. My eyes were not treated kindly in the follow-up to this either with the performance of "Be Our Guest". While the song is fine, the glowing sensory overload that ensues on the dinner table is just far too much. It had bright lights and excitement to try and attract kids to the joy on screen, but it felt far too hollow and bombastic to actually work in any effective way.

Fortunately, the film picks up considerably at this point as it begins to focus on the romance between the Beast and Belle. This is a romance that would charm warmth in the coldest and blackest of hearts. Via songs such as "Something There", "Beauty and the Beast", and "Evermore", the film strikes a heart warmingly romantic tone that rewards viewers with the magic of a fairy tale, terrific songs, and an awe-inducing romance. Together, Watson and Stevens have terrific chemistry in these forms and work incredibly well with one another. Small moments of them simply walking into a library or over a bridge are moving, poetic, and achingly romantic. The film has so much heart, it nearly swells and boils over. Now, these sequences do have their flaws. Though the visual effects of the film are impeccable, especially with Belle's dress - a real highlight of these live-action remakes have been the dresses, as the realization of Cinderella's ball gown with the accompanying visual effects is still stunning to me - and the beast is also incredibly well-realized. That said, there are still issues with the effects. On the bridge, while romantic, it is clear it is occurring in front of a green screen. There are other moments scattered throughout that are unfortunately stricken by shaky visual effects. Fortunately, the whole romance of them falling in love is so well-written and realized, it is hard to deny the film's magic. Accented by charming turns by Ewan McGregor, Ian McKellen, and Emma Thompson as some of the Beast's cursed helpers, the film strikes a good balance between the more romantic elements and the comedic elements.

the movie is a timely well made, and well acted update of the 1991 animated classic. While it may not reach the same height of the original, it is still a worthy companion.

There are some things that were not necesary to add and others that are most welcome (Evermore)
This is an enjoyable film that you can watch with the hall family and friends. Do not worry about the scandal about lefou; it was necessary to add this to the character because is a movie that celebrates been diferent.

Amazing! By far and away a Beauty of all remakes! Music was fantastic! The shortest 2 hour movie ever! I would see it again and again! Can't speak more highly of this movie!

A touching story by disney and well directed, this movie was better than i hoped. It had some flaws, too much cgi for my taste but in a beautifully designed environment. Great performance by the leads and that was some good singing.

It was THAT obvious. This trend of casting big name actors in musicals just for the billing disgusts me. There's a thousand broadway actresses who could have done that part a million times better. I would much rather have watched the movie with some no-name actress with a fantastic singing voice. However, Luke Evans as Gaston was fantastic and Josh Gad as Le Fou was funny, too. They kinda saved the movie. I did also like that they added in a few more songs. I would watch it again, but fast forward through every scene where Emma Watson is singing. Expand

Disney's classic Beauty and the Beast is timeless. Everything from the score to the voice actors to the writing is so close to perfect it's hard to imagine Disney would ever try to mess with it. Everything from the score to the voice actors to the writing is so close to perfect it's hard to imagine Disney would ever try to mess with it. But here we are, and they did. The modern take of Beauty and the Beast places few real actors in a live-action style setting in rural France. The film does much to borrow from its source material - the music, the lines all are either exactly or in the ballpark of that of the original film. Why change any of it? The original score is easily one of the most recognizable and timeless of all Disney films. No fault there. However, the film fails to hold itself together in other areas. The 100% digital world of the castle, the rolling hills... all of it is fake and it's incredibly obvious. That made me think "why didn't they shoot more of it in a real location?" Honestly, it looks cool but only if the characters are fake too. Because of real actors, it looks fake. For me, that's the case and I was unable to shake the feeling that it was all too unbelievable for even a work of fiction. Few times does B&tB take much artistic license to be unique from the original. When it does, some of it works rather well. Why couldn't Disney write something and produce something for real actors? If Star Wars can appear to be so real perhaps they could have conquered the same feat here - this movie was guaranteed to be a box office hit. Lastly, the casting is all wrong. Emma Watson does an okay job as Belle, yet she fails to capture the audience with the genuine sweetness and warmth that the cartooned Belle does with only voice acting. This could have worked but it really didn't. For 2017's Beauty and the Beast, its lack of originality and artistic endeavor makes it fall flat. And the casting... I couldn't figure out where anyone looked at this cast and thought "that person makes sense for that role". If I am to watch Beauty and the Beast again, it will only be the original - not this very weak remake. Expand

There's no reason to reboot Disney BATB, the original was more adult than this version that was trying to be more adult and still trying be like a Disney movie.

None of the characters looked convincing enough. CGI of the Beast was poor and not for a single second he appeared to be promising; all thanks to the CGI and voice over. The songs were dull and I felt the urge to skip them, which I did, a couple of times. There was no chemistry between Belle and the Beast. The acts were over the top and not at all convincing. Bill Condon has managed to create another below average piece, which is not a surprise if you have seen Twilight! Expand
