Suspenseful and fun overall. Fairly believable animal attackers, but generally very contrived. Idris Elba good as always, but not very convincing as a Dad. Nothing special. Just another day at the movies.

The effects in this were also — shockingly — some of the best I've seen in quite a while. I'm not even sure of the last time I've seen a CGI animal on screen that looked this convincing. Maybe "The Revenant?" Either way, it all helps in amping up the film's intensity, which I'm happy to say never really waned once things got going. I may be a bit more forgiving than others on this one, but I really can't say I was bored at any point throughout this flick. Just may have needed another pass or two at the script level is all. Despite strong performances, particularly from Idris Elba and Sharlto Copley, it comes off as a Savanna set version of Jurassic Park. It starts with a scene demonstrating the monstrous nature of the beast. Then we're introduced to the main characters, a vacationing father (a doctor), and his two young daughters, whom have issues with each other (as child resistant Dr Grant had to "father " Hammond's niece and nephew). In an early exposition dump we learn of why the animosity exists. We have a scene with a vehicle ledged precariously against a tree, and a scene of the young daughters trapped in a room with the beast approaching ala the raptor kitchen scene. The director, Baltasar Kormakur, sure loves the "oner", the one take scenes that may be stitched together that make up a lot of the scenes. It works to build tension for some scenes, but it's used much too often. The CGI lions are touch and go, but not a real distraction. Good for an undemanding actioner. Expand

While it certainly has style, this comes at the expense of removing any tension from the movie. It's a tough over saturated genre to be original in but the 'bloodlusted' super beast never gets any sort of explanation and so it all hangs on the drama between the core family unit which I never really bought into. Mildly entertaining at its best, yawn fest at its worst. Expand

I felt the story was too simple and actually for most of it felt quite boring. Like taking a very usual and simple formula and not making it anything special. It is ok, but don't expect anything great.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It was an okay movie that was very short and easy to follow. Lions were dangerous. I learned there were a lot of poachers. They should be arrested. No matter how dangerous lions are, they are not killed. I am an animal lover. Please protect wild animals. Expand

Although the footage lasts less than an hour and a half, Kormákur finishes expressing his intentions when he shows the shirt of "Jurassic Park": not prehistoric but current beasts, in a claustrophobic survival movie yet stuffed with a ridiculous story (the so-called "narrative conventionality"). Should the hand-to-hand fight between Idris Elba and the big pissed lion make people remember the one between DiCaprio and the grizzly in "The Revenant"? One of his worst feature films.

It’s Idris Elba punching a lion for 93 minutes, if you came in expecting an Oscar film that sounds like a you problem

About exactly what you would expect, It is at least interestingly filmed with a lot of tracking shots and care. Emotional moments fall very flat.

I was very happy with the announcement of this film, I wanted more of the genre, however, it was a disappointment, the characters are shallow and the plot is weak, the plot of the film takes time to happen, in short, medium

It was enjoyable enough. The constant use of 1 shot takes was very interesting but the script was very basic and bland.
