My friend invited me to see this, and I would take a bullet for that guy, but none the less being shot hurts. This lived up to the hype I had built up in my mind. Let me rehash the plot: exposition, hour long battle scene, speech, final battle scene. When I saw the trailers for this, I thought "What is this, Earth Defense Force 2017: The Movie?", but I realize now that I shouldn't have thought that because that would be an insult to Earth Defense Force. The one nice thing I have to say about this movie is that the special effects were good, and I really liked the way the flying saucers break apart into smaller units. At points this movie does deliver, but frankly this movie was so generic and mind numbingly dull that I would rather there be a real alien invasion than have to sit through anything like it again. This movie competes and delivers xcept for 5 minutes in the middle i could have done without. If this movie had named like speilberg , bay, or Abrams in the credits, you all would have given it high scores. Shame on all you low baller critics, the ones paid off, and the main stream name droppers for ignoring the thrill of this movie. I watched it twice so far, my wife as well, and plan on purchasing the bluray which I don't often do. It will sit beside Lost, star trek, star wars, WITH PRIDE! Expand

First off let me say if you are just looking for fun movie to watch with your buddies this movie is it. As a zone out and laugh with your friends flick, this is a 9/10

If you are critical when it comes to the films you watch then 1/10, because:

It could have been better if the director wasnt trying to become an honorary marine or something. The characters are all overly self-righteous and inept. Also the camera work is **** abysmal. I think that the cinematographer was trying to push some boundary by "breaking the rules" or something but it just makes the production look dumb. Its like he actually thought we would be more engaged because there weren't any Steadicams or track dollies used. Lots of lense flares, midshot zooming, and shaky cam.

The worst part was that it felt like it was supposed to be a character story or something. You can tell that your supposed to feel like your watching Band of Brothers but it feels like your watching The Room. This movie wants to be a Spielberg/Hanks production so bad. Unlike how you feel about Easy Company in B.O.B. this movie made me think that the Marine corps. is made entirely of douche-bags. At one point in the film the entire squad complains that they shouldn't have been forced into combat to save defenseless civilians. Anyone who thinks I am a liberal who hates the military and thus hated this movie is entitled to that opinion but way off. I hated this movie because it isn't made well. Plain and simple.

The reason I didn't hate it completely was that I saw what Lawrence Toppman had said about the film. Spent the entire time picking out what film each piece had been stolen from.

This was a very good video, just one thing, it showed too much fantasy that many people in my group did not find amusing, it was really good for people who are very very into things in outer space but not alot of people are like that.

I didn't think War of the Worlds was a great movie, but it was an enjoyable one. I would put this in the same category. There's not much of a plot -- it's basically a battle -- but not every movie has to be a best picture nominee to enjoy it. If you want to see an entertaining action movie with a fairly likable group of soldiers battling aliens, you're likely to enjoy the movie; it's fun. If your enjoyment is contingent upon a detailed plot, character development and so on, you'll be disappointed. Expand

To give this movie anything other than a 10, would be an insult. I saw this movie opening night and was in awe when I seen the craziness in a war against a seemingly impossible foe.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Though character development, the writing, and camera work are adequate, it's great to see an alien invasion film that was taken into great care from beginning to end. Little details are put here and there such as the aliens acting like military soldiers (reacting to wounds, taking cover, squad tactics) really make you feel like these aliens aren't a bunch of brain dead idiots who stand in one place out in the open and fire wildly and eat the marine's bullets until they finally fall over and die. Although, this movie isn't revolutionary like many suspected it to be, and that's quite a disappointed. There are cliches present a lot especially in the end when the marines somehow beat the odds in a **** way like every other alien invasion movie out there. If this movie had more of a sad, "we're straight up fucked," ending I would have given it a higher score. But, even with it's faults, the jokes are a hit, the action (although short) is intense and occurs quite often. And I have to say the story about the aliens is pretty decent too. Watch this movie, it's worth it. Expand

I thought this was an extremely entertaining movie from beginning to end. It was a summer blockbuster coming out in the winter. The action was frantic, but you always knew who was where and what was going on. The direction never got confusing like a Paul Greengrass film. There was the perfect, yet subtle amount of characterization in the start of the film that was just enough to understand each character. It also expertly placed the news segments throughout the film to allow the audience a chance to see the global impact as well as learn more about the aliens. I really don't know what people are complaining about. By the end of the movie I was exhausted from gripping the arm rests in suspense, and that rarely happens for me. This is Black Hawk Down meets District 9, and I put it right up there in the same caliber of those two movies. The plot doesn't twist and turn, but that is not what I expected out from it. I wanted action and suspense, and that's what it gave. I commend the director for shooting such chaos, yet always allowing the viewer to understand what is going on. He tightly wound the narrative and I can't wait to see it again. Well done. Expand

With the budget they had, you would think they could afford a script with a plot. If you want to see things blow up, this is a film for you. If youy want a good fil;m, not so much.

Mindless action movies can sometimes contain entertaining elements, but not this crap. Save your money for an intelligent Sci-Fi offering or just about anything else on at your multiplex.

Judge thisI've seen, and am highly, critical of alien invasion/apocalyptic movies, and this movie by far stands among the best. Don't judge this mo vie by the critics, they simply reflect a hollywood/liberal bias towards the military. Judge this movie, instead, by how close you feel to the chaos of an alien invasion and to these people undergoing a rapid sudden shift in their reality. I think one reason people are critical of this movie is they expected some sort of intricate plot or dramatic artistic symbolism. Instead of delving into that realm, the directors/producers made a very simple movie that is entertaining and realistic which is a breath of fresh air to me. Sometimes you want to simply go watch a movie that tells a story and is entertaining. This movie is all that on a very realistically portrayed background with amazing CGI and score. Expand

What audiences got was a hilarious and disjointed war melodrama with subversive elements that will insure the film's rank among "cult classics". Try to imagine what it would be like if Ed Wood had signed on to direct "War of the Worlds" instead of Spielberg. That is what audiences should go in expecting. And whether it was the overuse of the wobbly rifle scopes---the deadpan delivery of sheer screwball dialogue---the inept acting punctuating decent action sequences---the G.I. Joe-esqe delivery of Eckhart---the underwhelming alien presence---or the preposterous central premise of the film---I am not sure. But taken together, the film amounts to a gut busting exercise in unintentional parody....which, in the end, is what makes this film a surprise entertainment. Expand

Don't approach the movie as if it is on a pedestal, is there some "Marine Propaganda" in the film? Of course - as much as Independence Day, Black Hawk Down, Saving Private Ryan instilled a sense of American-bravado, this film does something similar...the good guys are good, and the bad guys are bad. There is no attempt to humanize the invading forces, they are attacking us, and we are defending ourselves - it's as simple as that. There isn't any crazy secret plot., it's a straight action and suspense film with a good science fantasy backdrop to the picture. The music? Any score by Brian Tyler is epic, and it does immerse you in the picture. The action style is a mix of Black Hawk Down/Cloverfield/Documentary style that tries to engage you in the action directly. There are a few epic battle shots that show the overall scenario they are facing, but not many. If you are expecting hundreds of fighter planes like Independence Day (which I loved), you don't see that in this film. This is squad based combat, following the actions of 8-12 marines...and you do get the feeling of being in the trenches with them.

Something I loved, and the Director has mentioned trying to achieve - the aliens move as a military force. They appear to have a hierarchy, leadership, individual actions - it doesn't follow the stereotypical aliens acting as a "hive mind." They have goals, are brutal in their attacks, but function as a military unit. They don't wipe out entire cities AKA some sort of super weapon, they engage in direct combat - one of the few movies to pit Earth forces against Alien invaders on a somewhat similar scale. They have better technology, but they don't overwhelm everything - requiring plot hole trickiness for their defeat.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Good solid science fiction-action movie. This movie is well worth the ticket price to see on the big screen. I thoroughly enjoyed watching Eckhart lead this group of Marines, Soldiers and an Airman while they attempted to rescue civilians and battle the alien menace. The few bits of sappy drama only slows the pace of this entertaining piece of fiction once or twice and the acting is tolerable or good enough to survive it. News flashes give just enough information to see the global scale of the invasion and give a little idea of why the aliens would want to invade this polluted little planet. Strong military overtones make sense given the story and the current times. It is obvious that a good deal of effort was put into making the military as realistic as possible even when battling aliens across Los Angeles. The focus is a little broader then the tunnel vision of Expand
