Probably this is the loudest movie i have ever seen in years. The storyline is predictable but the action sequence and survival battle caught my attention.

There's no nail biting suspense because there's no story in the first place. All you see is straight gun fire, violence, and nothing at all productive. Basically the plot is very stagnant with nowhere to go. Even the action scenes are poorly made. CG's is equivalent to that of a college student and not a paid professional. Even National Geographic knows CG better than this. In my opinion this movie is basically a low-budget film, with no intention of becoming a masterpiece and shouldn't be watched unless you enjoy heavy gunfire and not much else. Expand

I thought it was good. Like others have said, if you are looking for an Oscar-winner, this isn't your movie. If, however, you want a sweet USA kicking some alien ass-type movie, then this is a great film.

Remember this is an action movie, and its tense, hard hitting and fun. AND can be as cliche'd as it get's, I still thoroughly enjoyed it.

If you like sci fi , action and military films, this will go straight up your flagpole !
The alien tech , consisting of acid and phosphor based rounds, is quite naturally vastly superior to the human tech and as such, mankind gets its backside handed to it royally.

The film follows a squad of US marines as they try to extricate themselves from the heart of an invasion zone after an inexperienced officer leads them into an ambush.
They have to fight for every foot of ground, and pay heavily all the way.

Ignore the naysayers. It's an action movie, and as such isn't there to win oscars. It's there to entertain.
It does this successfully.

I'll be buying this on Bluray when it's released

An unequivocal and well earned 8/10. .

A super blockbuster! The sameness may be present in the roadmap showing every soldier, his bravery and patriotism, as always ... blah blah blah but you know what? It never hurts to watch! It is the vision of the director on YOUR choice to show some LA soldiers before a battle towards ET's. Or you guys were expecting a 10 hour film which show various views the world and your soldiers? The scenes, photographs, takes, these have a lot of CG is visually amazing! Brilliant! The Americans know how to show patriotism, unity, emotion, technology, performance and special effects. Great actors and a good choice to end. My "Four Thumbs Ups" by the art of the blockbuster film! Pure fun and wonder! Expand

It is not a sci-fi action movie. The aliens are there, because extreme political correctness (I would say political madness) has no problems with killing dozens of aliens, but similar amount of dead nazis/north koreans/russians/any other usa enemy soldiers would require completely different approach. While killing aliens can be done without any restrictions.
Its not a bad movie, it just betrays the viewers. The trailers promise a sci-fi action movie, and we receive an illustration of 'how wonderfull american soldiers are', aliens optional. If not that, the audience would be different and opinions better.

Gritty, intense and with characters you actually care about, it is what films like Independence Day should have been. It does contain a regiment of military cliches but let's face it, for the most part the entire military film genre is a lot of "been there, done that" so whatever you create do it with style. Pacing is excellent though its wanes a bit towards the end once some of the mystery is dimmed. Overall it delivers thrills throughout and I sincerely hope to see this bud into a lucrative franchise (unfortunately its the dollar that drives the industry). Expand

Most of us will immediately compare it with INDEPENDENCE DAY (1996) for Alien Invasion and Spielberg E.T.: THE EXTRA TERRESTRIAL (1982) for more Friendly Alien. Yep, it was only two. In summary, the rest is follower. Thiz movie is closer to the first one. From the first minute it is very clear we will only see through a single perspective. A staff Sergeant (Aaron Eckhart) was given an assignment to assist 2nd Lieutenant and his platoon. Their objective is deploying to City of Los Angeles and defends from alien aggression. I could easily say the movie effectively dragging us into middle of specific situation, where we will be able to experience what it feels like to be one of those U.S. Marines in that war zone. Thiz experience is just like when we were playing one of those video games like COUNTER STRIKE, HALF-LIFE and CALL OF DUTY. We are forced to take a role in it, to be anxious and worrying when Alien sneaking nearby, or think along what should be the best strategies to evacuate a group of civilians, and finally how to find their weaknesses and use it to fight back. Like all the Alien movies, thiz new form of Alien also has a weakness. In INDEPENDENCE DAY they defeat it by installing the computer virus into their mothership, meanwhile in MARS ATTACK! (1996) they destroy it with the song! Find out yourself, what is the weakness in thiz version of Alien. The Director is Jonathan Liebesman (known for TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE: THE BEGINNING (2006)) and the rest of the Casts are: Ramon Rodriguez, Michelle Rodriguez, Ne-Yo, Bridget Moynahan and many more. The Director seems to be very skillful in using Hand-Held camera techniques, no matter how shaky the picture is, we could still see it comfortably. The only disappointment is that in the movie trailer showed alien arrivals caused mass panic from some of the famous cities all over the world, and we also saw a dynamic breaking news style which is make us thinking that thiz movie is a worldwide apocalyptic movies. It does not happen that way, you are just about to follow a platoon of soldiers. The focus is simply smaller.

The movie smacks of a feeble organised attempt to elicit sympathy and emotion for an enemy you can't (really) see - the aliens. Oh gee, that's what the US is doing in the Middle East right now. I would not at all be surprised to learn that this movie was (ultimately) funded by the US government for propaganda reasons. There are even attempts to plug recruitment for the US Marines and the small boy Hector is called a "young marine". You get Battle: Los Angeles, probably the most underrated film of the year. I mean, seriously, critics? You guys have such high expectations! Oh well, anyways, I'd like to point out the bad things first, because that's the kinda guy I am. at one point i the film, the CGI got really hard to look at, and there were two little girls who were completely pointless characters. All they do is scream, cry and hold the solders' hands from time to time. Do they bring out any emotion like that one older boy? NO! Why, movie makers, Why? But other than that, the film was actually better than I expected! And I felt a connection to the beginning part where the aliens first reveal themselves at the Santa Monica Pier. I thought "Holy sh*t, I was just there this morning!" Because I was. But as odd as it seems, the aliens get progressively weaker throughout the film. It seemed like they were walking tanks at the start, but then turned into weak-ass grunts near the end. Whatever, the aliens aren't something we haven't seen before, and that's that. Great movie, great acting, okay CGI, but two pointless characters. Expand

If you are a sci-fi action movie lover you will SURLY enjoy this flick. I thought the cast well good. The acting wasnt cheesy at all. Sure the aliens were a little bit to animated but they mixed it in well. Explosions were legit, surroundings were done very nicely. I could imagine thats about how it would go in real life. All in all a GREAT popcorn flick, just dont take it to seriously and just enjoy it for what it is...a nice sci-fi action thriller where humans are fighting to live. not the best sci-fi flick but its by far not the worst. 6/10 for me simply b/c I thought the computer animated aliens/space ships needed a little more work. I thought District 9 even did a better job with the aliens but wasnt bad when they showed the close ups.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I did have great hopes for BLA(2011), desperately willing it to be better than Charlie Sheen's The Arrival(1996), and at the very least better than Skyline(2010). Well, for me it actually was a little better than last year's Hy'drau'l'x stinker, but not enough. It suffers similarly from a lack of audience relatability within such a claustrophobic story. Where's that (INTERNATIONAL) focus group when you really needed one?

If anything, this can be said to be a by-the-numbers marine Hoo-Ah film that tries waaaay-too-hard to capture the visceral feel of life as a Marine, but suffers by comparison with The Hurt Locker(2008). Its most obvious major flaw was the overused shaky-cam, constantly filming inches from chiselled jaws.

The forced crying of men on camera I found pointedly ham-fisted; but director Liebesman seemed to handle the role of Michelle Rodriguez, the female Technical Sergeant, with admirably low-key acceptance. Other casting choices showed a glimmer of movie-making ability â

ItIt starts out with a boring introduction of the characters and extremely annoys by being captured with an unsteady hand camera (even though there is nothing happening in the script, to the viewer it feels like there is an earthquake). It seems Aaron Eckhart's acting saves the movie from not being enjoyable. But really, there are some emotional scenes, and after the action starts going it does not lose excitement until the movie is over. Interestingly, the story does not concentrate on the overall impact of the alien invasion on a global scale, but focuses exclusively on one small team of marines and how they try to survive while contributing to defending their country. On the one hand, the military's representation might be a little bit one sided for it only shows good soldiers, while really in every big group of people there are black sheep. However, on the other hand, people who might be opposed to the existence of the American military should see with this movie that its major function is protecting their own people. There is only very little critical element in the beginning of the movie, but it does compare the shocking alien invasion to the human's "handbook of how to colonize", therefore confirming that the humans have behaved towards each other in the same cruel way. This movie is not the greatest way to spend one's time and money, but it won't feel like a waste either. Expand

Now, I love the military, and that wasn't the real problem with the film. In fact, I'm sure that helped this movie out heaps, by providing some very realistic combat sequences. The real problems here are abuse of cliché, drunken camera work, clunky dialog, and blurry fudgey effects. For an alien movie, you barely get to see any of them. Sure they're firing all sorts of weapons everywhere, but they are rarely seen, badly designed, and poorly developed. Did I have fun watching it? Yes. Do I ever need to see it again? No. Expand

Some might have given it more credit than was due. As with many of the users giving this positive reviews; I can only assume you were in the marines, know someone who is in the marines, or fell asleep after the first action scene. The movie builds up the characters in the beginning apparently for no reason. The characters are in no way dear to your heart by only being provided with inconsequential details of their back story in the beginning is the film's only attempt at character development. All could have been forgiven if the action was similar to the first fight scene. I was originally blown away and fully immersed in the combat. Then the rest of the movie happened. The rest of the film is just riddled with awkward dialogue, clunky character direction, and outlandish situations even for an alien movie. Please be my little Marine and pass this movie up. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If scenes existed in a vacuum, maybe the stabs at drama that the filmmaker attempts in "Battle: Los Angeles" wouldn't be so jarring. Scenes, however, are interlocked, comprising of a contextual whole with a predominant tone, and the tone in this "Saving Private Ryan"-style sci-fier is escapist, regardless of its shaky-cam documentary aesthetic designed to make the fantastical meld together with reality. As advertised, "Battle: Los Angeles" plods along noisily and with a minimum of dialogue, pitting an infantry of nondescript marines against the aliens who have come for our water in war-torn Santa Monica. So far, so good. On a rescue mission, the marines discover a father and son, and a helpful veterinarian on the other end of an answered distress signal, who are then made to board a yellow schoolbus that should make them easy pickings for the clunky-looking invaders. But maybe they're colorblind. Following an alien autopsy conducted under the watchful eye of that serendipitous veterinarian(Bridget Moynahan gets to deliver a classic line), Staff Sergeant Michael Nantz(Aaron Eckhart) determines that the right side("where the heart should be") is the killshot, but not a whole lot is made of this intelligence. Blowing them up to kingdom come proves to be equally effective. And so it goes, for better or worse, "Battle: Los Angeles" is a live-action video game that can't be bothered with details or human emotions. Not satisfied with fiery explosions and perfunctory dialogue, however, Sgt. Nash, alluded to being John Wayne earlier in the film, goes "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" on his men by delivering a sentimental, ham-fisted speech that will emit more guffaws than tears from moviegoers. After all, it's not the Germans whom they're engaged in war with, but rather, it's a battalion of water-powered aliens, and poorly-conceived ones at that. Expand

I went to this film on opening night knowing really nothing about it, and i was daydreaming by the end of the movie. The reason this movie was so dull to me was because:
A) I've already seen this movie half a dozen times. Basically it was Independence day mixed with a marine ad, mixed with any Michael Bay movie. B) There was no tension in the movie because the alien's weapons had no effect on the marines. C) everyone in the movie was a hero, thus making no one the hero. D) The "Plot" was so predictable I didn't even have to pay attention to know what was going on.

After wasting five pound on an entry ticket and another five pound on a bag of minstrels and a coke, watching this poor excuse for a film put me down. I ended up leaving an hour in due to its repetitive scenes, horrible acting and cheap special effects. I enjoyed Avatar - a film widely remarked as full of action with a bland storyline - but this is a whole new level of obscenity. I wouldn't be able to name you a single character from the main squad, all I really cared was that they died before the two and a half hours of pathetic movie were over. Okay, so all the marines had the right gear, they acted like marines, and had a couple of rifles that made us shout 'Ha, its the M16 from Call of Duty!' and then realising I would rather be playing that instead of watching the film. As for the tension, it works in a similar way to '2012' the whole film is supposedly so tense that you end up predicting every part of the movie. For example, my friend said to me 'I bet that helicopter will get shot down straight away'... Spoiler Alert: It did. Out of the 7 of us watching, only 2 remained who watched the remainder of the film, met us and summarised it in about two lines. Again, they didn't know any of the names...
Do not waste your money watching this film because you'll get more value for your money with a length of rope.

This movie was designed to be an actionLook people, I've read some of the reviews, and I think people miss the point of movies anymore. This movie was to tell a story of Marines, Soldiers, Corpsman, and Airman fighting an alien invasion. This movie was designed to be an action film, operative word ACTION. Was the story some amazing Shakespeare masterpiece? Not at all, but it's not supposed to be. The story carries the movie well enough, with logical story progression, and a very comforting lack of pointless scenes. You learn a little bit about some of the characters, their lives, who they are, and then BOOM - it hits the fan. Fairly, you only ever feel truly attached to one character, and there are some very emotional scenes in the movie, especially if you served in the military. There are some weak spots in the story, and even a few plot points directly ripped off from other movies, but overall the story is acceptable.
The CG and special effects in this movie are absolutely spectacular. The aliens move fluidly, never is overwhelming CG shoved in your face, and the CG is always on a real backdrop, and looks amazing. But the one thing that steals the show? The AMAZING sound for this movie. It sounds like a war, accurately portraying the deafening volume of explosions, gunfire, tank fire, everything. This is a war, and is sounds like it.
Overall, this movie has an acceptable story, with acceptable acting, amazing CG and special effects, and amazing sound. All the reviews I've read that are negative towards this movie are because it positively portrays the US military, and apparently that is unacceptable in a movie to those folks.

Although a bit true obviously the catch in this movie is not the "Oh my what a great new concept" it is the presentation that sets this movie aside from the rest. Similar to Avatar which is basically Dances with Wolves or Pocahontas but because of its presentation (and of course the name James Cameron) it became the biggest box office hit. Battle L.A is fantastic the Cinematography is great , one thing i thought was new and innovative was that the Aliens acted much like humans which not many, or if any, movies do. The ending although classic really kept me guessing i thought it would end one classic way but it didn't, it really had me wondering what would happen next. This movie is not for people who hate action, guns, or Aliens. But if you love one or all of these i would highly recommend this movie. On a last note the only reason i did not give it a 10 was because well not many movies are perfect, its really just too fan boyish to give it a straight up 10. Expand

Had a real authentic feel with the military, save a more relatable performance by Aaron Eckhart but still good. The effects were great, hiding the alien ships kinda like Paranormal Activity, the first one, not the second one where you already know what's going on. There were a few too many characters, but most of them get killed off before it becomes too much of a problem. My thing was that this was probably the closest video game movie I've ever seen. You start out in a street shootout, then shootout in/around the police station, then a driving section, stealth section to take down the drone, a big bridge battle where the enemy brings out a big gun machine/boss character, then another driving section, another stealth section, then a survival section where you try and stay alive until the missile hits including another boss mech, and finally the big push where they rush the enemy. It was almost eerie. My biggest problem was the pacing. Since the battles are so hectic and cluttered, it really feels long. But what I loved most about it was the character evolution that happens with Eckhart. The Sergeant is put through a major catastrophe and through it he realizes that despite his previous failures he still belongs in the Marines. If you look for it, there's a personal story in here. But all in all, a very good movie. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My expectations were not high. I went for a more or less silly shoot-em-up with combat action, heroic moments and spectacular special effects. But this movie failed to satisfy even these. Pointless plot, poor characters, silly battle scenes and disappointing special effects. I have seen game intros and cut scenes more impressive. Expand

The only "realistic" way to portray such an invasion would not have a happy ending - unless of course you are an alien.

I put off seeing this film because of the low score (and maybe because I was seeing enough disaster on TV )but, a little bored yesterday i went .

A couple parts were laughable but overall it was way better than I expected. If you like disaster films and sci-fi like me, i think you will find battle LA entertaining and are likely to find yourself gripping the armrests a little more than you planned.

Equipment & execution are presented well & you feel like you're right in the squad... you don't know everything or what's going to happen at all. The 4th wall is behind you not in front of you for this movie.
This is 10 times the movie "Monsters" is yet it's being panned by critics because of it's "lack" of story.
Maybe if this had been "made in a basement" like "Monsters" supposedly was it'd be winning awards too.
As it is "Monsters" didn't deserve any credit... I've met worse monsters working my retail job... while the aliens in Battle: LA feel just like they're supposed too... ALIEN.

BUT then I realized it wasn't suppose to be a comedy, I think, still not sure. Must be a comedy and a pathetic attempt .The reality, Aliens have taken over LA, I mean Hollywood. Really!, They must have made this movie to throw us off track. I hope that is the excuse!!!!. The aliens (Hollywood) complied and used the absolute worst from all previous alien motion pictures. Every terrible cliche', worst dialogue, lost continuity, no real content, and no imagination! Talk about beings from another planet, apparently the people who THREW this together are from another galaxy and not in touch with the human race. Come down to earth! This piece of film, is a real Battle of your Mind, trying to find entertainment value for over an hour and 1/2. Its worst than brain freeze. At least brain freeze goes away quickly, but with Battle of Los Angeles, maybe in a decade or two, I can learn to forget the agony of sitting through mindless dribble. Expand

The plot is full of action and intensity, followed by a shall we say "cooldown" periods where the intensity is dimmed down enough to thrust the story forwards. These times are the only times when the story is being pushed forward, otherwise, it is nothing but fighting for an objective that you already know they are trying to achieve. This movie makes you feel the emotions of the characters, and Battle: LA has a lot of them. Action sequences are also suspenseful and somewhat unpredictable. You will get entertainment out of this if you are the type who loves action. Oh, and one more thing, there is no romance in this action film, which is always a plus. Expand

I hate to say it, but this movie feels painfully generic. Boring, cliched characters. Cliche Hoo-rah story. Aaron Eckhart is really great in it, but it's otherwise fairly forgettable.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A tolerable war flick. While it gets all the military ins-and-outs right, and the setup is enough to pique interest, the excessive shaky-cam and lame script from the invasion point onwards is enough to drive one insane. Shaky-cam during idle office scenes? Really? Shaky-cam during slow, tension-building scenes? Double-really?

The movie disappoints on multiple levels. The aliens are never explained in depth at all (hive command structure, they want our water, shoot an organ in their chest to kill them...that's it), the firefights are extremely same-ey (oh look, they've been ambushed, pinned down, and surrounded...again), the alien drones -- in their conveniently humanoid form -- are so obviously motion-captured it's counter-immersive, and the fates of characters are so predictable from their introductions it's laughable. (Inexperienced junior officer just out of academy...check. Timid shy Marine who immediately gets separated...check. Army extras who valiantly fulfill their role as red-shirts...check.)

One of the few redeeming qualities of this film is, unsurprisingly, Eckhart's performance as Nantz. If he didn't convince you as Harvey Dent in The Dark Knight, then he will here: A sign of a truly capable actor, he belts out an incredibly campy and cliche speech 2/3rds of the way in with all the steely grit of a true hero of the industry -- that is, one willing to endure jobs such as this so that he might move on to bigger and better projects.

Entertaining? Yes. Good? By no means.

Aaron Eckhart does an outstanding job portraying an experienced father figure character in a movie full of young 18 - 20 year old characters. Many make the mistake of assuming the characters are immature and childish, however most people forget that the characters these actors are portraying are under the age of 20, including the lieutenant himself. Eckhart gives an emotional performance in a few smartly placed scenes which help with the pacing of such a tense, fast action film. All in all, the best movie I've seen in two years. Entertaining, and far from boring, and it has enough originality to keep you on your seat the whole way through. Expand

Full of explosions, special effects, and so much gunfire you can almost smell the gunpowder, Battle LA fails to disappoint... For a summer action movie. It has its fair share of cheesy dialogue, and a hazy plot (the invasion of the Aliens seem a bit rushed), and we never know why they're on earth in the first place, but then again, this isn't supposed to win an Oscar. Its supposed to entertain, and entertain it does. Expand

Good attention to detail with military protocol, although not a marine, it seemed accurate.
What I liked about the enemy is that they weren't some uber over powered force whoopin our tail, like in that awful movie Independence Day... They were advanced, it was up to them to find a weakness...
The action was about 95% of the movie. For an action/sci-fi movie, it's a 10, beacause it kept me entertained. I am not looking for an oscar winner, I went to this movie for action and it delivered 100%. Go see it on the big screen if you can!

I was worried of walking into a cheesefest going into Battle:LA, but walking out I'd say that the just-got-off-a-great roller-coaster grin on my face pretty much said it all! This is the most fun I've had watching a movie in years. Simply put, B:LA is Black Hawk Down meets Hurt Locker meets Independence Day; the movie contains a whole lot of Marine Hoo-Rah and just the right splash of (believe it or not) "eye-welling" tender moments. I have to note that while the acting overall was not Academy Award winning, B:LA did avoid becoming cheesy. It came close on one or two occasions, but managed to come back from the Cheddar precipice. Of note, Aaron Eckhart carries the movie taking a story that might merely have been outlandish and making it believable, and frightening. Even Michele Rodriquez, one of Hollywood's lesser talented and most stereotyped actresses, brought a bit of sensitivity to her role. Visuals are state of the art, and the score was just right in both the moments of high action and moments of tenderness completing the roller-coaster ride. Kudos to B:LA--bringing Sci Fi back...sorry Avatar. Expand
