A good refresh of the series, unlike Tim Burton's slightly comical tone to the film in 1989.
Tim Burton's was to bring you into the fantasy world of Gotham City.
But this film is much closer to our daily lives.

Whereas the last series would be more appealing to the younger generation especially kids, Nolan's depiction is much more accurate and focuses on Batmans's personal development.

All I want now is if Bale can stop slurring the words when he speaks, then it would be perfect.

This movie goes back to the true dark roots of Batman and focuses on character development of Batman rather than the Villain, cheesy dialog and loud gimicky music and costumes like the previous franchise. This is a more laid, back dramatic Batman than an action based one. But of course being a superhero movie there are definitely some cool action scenes thrown in. Personally, I even liked this better than the Tim Burton movies which I always thought were overrated. 9/10 Expand

Batman Begins [2005]
It's pretty surreal to experience that after just watching the cartoony and absurd (not to mention crappy) "Batman & Robin", you watch the polar opposite. Not to mention the fact that it's the best Batman movie so far in the marathon. Nolan really gave a brilliant feel and reinvention to the franchise, one that it so desperately needed. Not to mention this was the cause of the new era of superhero movies. It's a brilliant movie. I appreciated this one a LOT more, despite watching it a few times years ago. Probably because I've experienced the **** and letdowns that previous Batman movies (which my childhood memories preciously upholded) had on me now rewatching it as an adult.

Plot: Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) is the son of Thomas and Martha Wayne. He grows up very rich due to his father's ownership of Wayne Tower and has a very good relationship to them. However after leaving an opera they are murdered in front of his very eyes. As he grows up as a rich child under the care of his butler Alfred (Michael Caine) he feels guilty for their murder. When he decides to confront the mob boss controlling much distortion in Gotham City he realizes that he hasn't experienced true suffering and must accquire that feeling in order to protect those less fortunate. As he ignores his riches, he lives as a homeless man who must steal in order to survive, he goes from location to location into prison in order to beat up the prisoners. One day, Ducard (Liam Neeson) bails him out of prison and persuades him to participate in the initiation of the League of Shadows in an attempt to make Wayne become one with the darkness to make him stronger. After Wayne confronts his fear of bats and is ready to become a member, he lastly has to kill a man who has commited evil. When he refuses he destroys their temple and gets out alive and saves Ducard. When he returns to Gotham, his company has been taken over as he is still granted a position within it. He collaborates with fellow co worker Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman) as he uses an endless supply of technology which combined with his training allow him to become the vigilante known as Batman as he protects Gotham from evil and injustice. Compared to Batman: Batman Begins gives Batman the true origin story he deserves as a more realistic take on Batman, as his origins are thoroughly explored. My opinion: Batman Begins is the ultimate introduction to Batman as the audience will realize the hardship and struggle he has gone through in order to become the superhero that he is. I reccomend this to any Batman fan and to anyone who is into psycology, anybody who hasn't seen a live action Batman movie, and to anybody interested into deep storylines, as well as a lawyer. Expand

The closest we ever got to a great treatment was from Tim Burton's first "Batman" movie, and even then it was only the Joker that made the movie watchable - Michael Keaton was utterly boring, and the movie itself remained visually flat and uninteresting.

With Nolan, however, we get "Batman Begins" - a joyfully fantastic new take on the caped crusader's origins. Although the film has a lot of ugly browns to it, particularly during the last act, Christian Bale delivers a tensely convincing Bruce Wayne as the conflicted and disillusioned man who develops a crime-fighting alter ego to clean up the streets of Gotham. Liam Neeson is a strong villain and fun to watch, and his death is one of my favorite film villain deaths of all time. The music is awesome, the action scenes are great, and it's certainly the easiest of the Nolan Batman films to follow.

Roger Moore as James Bond and took him into a cartoon, after succession occurred with Timothy Dalton and a stoic interpretation on the same wavelength as the expeditious Sean Connery and people turned away. The public had become accustomed to a new facet of the character and repudiated the return to their sources (or the general idea that previously existed on the character). If Batman and Robin would have been the first film of 1989, may not have generated much rejection (was more in line with what you remember from the Adam West series). But I used (and fascinated) with Burton's dark vision, just became the worst sacrilege that he could make the character, and the series went into a freezer which take years to emerge.
But Christopher Nolan majestual managed to save this doomed series.
Certainly the combination is more than interesting. First, Goyer and Nolan decide counting from zero overcast history, even with sagging elements of continuity with Burton's films.
Second, is the epic view. Not only do we see the origin of Bruce Wayne Batman, but its evolution.
The story is beautifully told, The origin of the character is totally brilliant but the film begins to falter a bit when Wayne is now Batman. Especially the lack of true brilliance of his villains: the Scarecrow is simply a psychopathic killer, whose origin is unknown. Ra's Al Ghul that the comic was an immortal is blurred, lacking depth or greater, perhaps, as the focus of the script indicates, is profiled secondary mode, so as not to steal the overcast scene. Maybe Carmine Falcone is, in his brief, most brilliant, cynical and sinister villains disguised. In if the story is not quite good and is still the subject of children but the performances are superb, and certainly Christian Bale is the definitive Batman. The score is excellent, somehow, Batman leaves his scientific side, relegating it to a new character as Lucius Fox, the relationship with childhood sweetheart, played by Katie Holmes, is warm, the villains plan is in a sense recycling plan of the first Batman Joker. But they are very minor flaws compared to the density, brilliance and excellence of the film.
It is the beginning of an epic new era, that of a gentleman, a vigilante protector, a dark knight. You must see it.
My Score: 9.3

Christopher Nolan took soA great, great origin story for one of the coolest comic book characters of all time. I was really confused when I saw it at first when I was younger but when I watch it today, I have so much more respect for it. Christopher Nolan took so much inspiration from comics like Batman: Year One and he incorporated that in this movie. He didn't straight up adapt one single comic book, he took bits and parts from a ton of batman comic books and combined it into one. And if you really pay attention, they mention Victor Zsasz and Commissioner Loeb who were both minor characters in the Batman universe. It was great to hear them mentioned in this movie and other Dark Knight movies. It really showed how much respect and trust I have for Christopher Nolan. He really does know exactly what he is doing and wants with these movies. In the movie, I really liked how stealthy Batman was when he was out fighting crime. It made sense because Batman is a very dark and stealthy character so it was actually really intense to see him take down all of these henchman at once. It was surprise because it actually reminded me of such movies like Alien because of how suspenseful it was. When one of the henchman looks up and he sees batman literally pounce on him is a lot like how the Alien in Alien took down the people on the ship. Also, a great choice for a villain. Since the scarecrow was a bit of an unconventional villain for batman, it had a lot of people scratching their heads but it was a great choice. In this movie, Bruce Wayne was dealing with his fear of bats so the scarecrow a huge challenge because he had to overcome his fears in order to defeat the scarecrow. It was a very clever choice for a villain and I really enjoyed it. If you haven't seen Batman Begins then you are missing out. It is a very rare film that can stand alone as a single movie without any sequels. But those other movies are pretty great too but I'm not talking about that. Expand

But it is an extremely good film, that along with the original Batman could very well be the best of the Batman films(thought perhaps just lacking the original film's sophistication). People may find this blasphemy, but I did prefer this over The Dark Knight, but that was still very good. Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins is stylish, dark and gritty, pretty much what Batman should be. I have seen complaints that the film "contradicts" the 1989 film. Perhaps so, but what I can say in the film's defence is that Batman Begins is sort of a very loose prequel to the original movies.

Visually, Batman Begins looks absolutely incredible! It could very well be the most beautiful visually of the Batman films, with beautiful cinematography and a simply dazzling view of Gotham City itself. Another asset I appreciated was that the music score didn't overpower the action, in fact it gave some atmospheric flavour to it. As much as Danny Elfman's scores were outstanding and definitely memorable, Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard do a great job with the score.

The script is taut and well-written with lines that really make you think along with some occasional offbeat humour, the plot isn't convoluted or predictable but original, the film moves briskly(the second half was marginally better in terms of pacing to the first half though but that is in no way a flaw) and the action is explosive particularly the climax and the bat-mobile car-chase. Also Christopher Nolan's direction is excellent.

The acting, aside from the visuals is what drives the film. Christian Bale is for me the best Batman since Michael Keaton. In the role of Batman he is suitably dark and brooding, like Batman should be, and as Bruce Wayne, he is dashing, handsome and ambitious. Katie Holmes actually surprised me and in a good way. She wasn't bland or annoying, I actually found her sympathetic and surprisingly good. Liam Neeson is also very good, though he has been better, while Michael Caine is perfect as Alfred. Cillian Murphy, Tom Wilkinson and the excellent, underrated Gary Oldman are also solid in their roles, while Morgan Freeman is wonderful as always.

Overall, a brilliant film that is visually stunning, gripping and atmospheric. 9.5/10 Bethany Cox

Bruce Wayne is a tortured soul. Batman is a flawed combatant. This creates a super-hero who is vulnerable.

Weaknesses in super-heroes is pivotal to creating emotional attachment. It, also, serves to bring them down to a human level and, therefore, relatable to our own pains and anguishes.

However, the film does have flaws. It's one thing hearing a line delivered once or twice. But three or more times is silly. Also, Zsasz is an under-developed character. Lastly, it's made evident that Bruce Wayne learns the meaning of fear through stealing goods, yet, they are his own goods.

A very good reboot and the finest Batman film.

A raw 12 round boxing match, that is engaging throughout the night.

Batman Begins

Christopher Nolan, as reported, plans to take over the DC universe to get funded for his larger than life films like Inception and Interstellar. But this plan itself is packed with an enormous amount of love for this caped crusader. And exerting that love by going through his homework through and through, you can easily see Nolan swooping in every fanboy moment on the screen. And as much as the film goes to an incredible amount of length just to punch you with that awe gasping scene, the plot moves swift, smooth and for once linearly. The plot is textbook origin tale of Bruce Wayne discovering the inner Batman in him.

Joining Nolan on script writing is David S. Goyer, a familiar face in the gothic comic world whose, as reported, lofty plot devices are grounded with signature writing style by him. And this screenplay is often considered to be a literary example for the newcomers in screenwriting, since it, despite being dipped in superhero world, treats its characters like a crime drama genre, the punches doesn't come off empty, but in bleak honesty and in black(!)

For a film that easily runs over 3 hours- or it definitely looks like it- the editing deserves a mention for its sharpness that is elevated by a whisky cinematography and exhilarating background score. Nolan has been upfront about staging Batman as a horror rather than a beloved superhero with everything sunny in the background. And that is why the themes and storylines adapted from the comic books deals with the same messy head-spinning images. There are some gruesome special effects in here that will not be seen later in the trilogy. This visual storytelling treat is something that will later in Nolan's filmography is going to expand and even take over the cinematic life of its own; you can see the hints here, how Nolan and Batman Begins.

Review Title: The Legend Begins

Batman Begins sees the rise of a man letting go of his anger and guilt to become something that Gotham needs during perhaps the worst time for crime in Gotham's history. We see a Bruce Wayne that is conflicted not just morally but emotionally in that he wants to be with his childhood love Rachel Dawes but knows deep down the time isn't right. The villains in this movie are exceptional in their own way, one literally using the law to his advantage of crime and the other could honestly care less about the laws of man and simply goes by his own order's code. Batman Begins was the start of perhaps the greatest trilogy in the history of cinema and gets a 9/10 from me.

It's much more enjoyable and understandable to watch this after seeing some Batman films or playing through the Arkham series of games. As an origins story for how Batman came to be, it does an excellent job in terms of the pacing, direction and story. It doesn't feel like it drags on unnecessarily but provides fairly deep character development. What's more impressive is how this film manages to convey Batman's dual identity and the issues revolving around it alongside a typical Batman story which manages to be exciting despite the lack of an iconic villain. If you've played the Arkham games, you will be shocked by how pathetically lame Scarecrow is in this film but the direction, soundtrack and acting on the whole make up for it. If you like Batman, this is definitely worth seeing. Expand

I couldn't have been more right. Batman Begins isn't perfect. It didn't quite erase all of the silliness inherent in comic book adaptations, which Nolan would later correct to unimaginable lengths in The Dark Knight, but at the time of its release it may still have been the grittiest, most absorbingly realistic superhero movie ever made. This is a dark, atmospheric movie, with real storytelling, and actual dramatic heft. It marks a more than solid beginning to the greatest superhero trilogy ever, even if it's still a good bit short of The Dark Knight, and in some ways The Dark Knight Rises. For Nolan's first time working on a big action movie it's fantastic. By the way, even though Maggie Gylanhaal may technically be a better actress, Katie Holmes is way hotter ;) Expand
