Until The Dark Knight came along, this was the best superhero movie that I'd ever seen. Nolan took the genre in a completely new and dark direction and everyone else followed. This was a landmark film.

Batman Begins is a film that was supposed to reboot the Batman franchise after the awful 1997 movie Batman and Robin. Batman Begins shows how Bruce Wayne, the owner of Wayne Enterprises becomes Batman. The story has a darker tone to it, which I like because I am a huge sucker for dark stories in anything. The acting was top notch for all characters, the action scenes were awesome, and the directing was clearly the best seeing how great the movie was. Normally, I would be skeptical about reboots, seeing as they could go either way, but Christopher Nolan did an outstanding job with this movie. It's too bad the video game did not do any justice for the movie, as I think it is why some people do not like the movie. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. An epic and gritty imagination of DC Comics' most famous vigilante is masterfully brought to the big screen by Christopher Nolan, the director of Inception. Christopher Nolan reimagines almost every detail of Batman and give a better reimagining. For example the Bat Mobile becomes the Bat Tumbler, Batman's suit ditches all yellow, blue, and gray, for just a plain solid black Batman suit. And even the Batman logo gets an even more realistic bat reboot. Except some characters, even though they were well acted, they needed more costume detail. Like the Scarecrow, his mask and fear toxin looked awesome, but he didn't have any farm or scarecrow clothes or hat or farm weapons. Ra's al Ghul would've looked a bit better with a beard resembling the comic books or if he went shirtless in battles. And they didn't show Victor Zsasz's tally mark scars, just his knife he used. But still the movie was epic, with an all star cast in each movie or sequel that improves on the prequel. Good job Christopher Nolan! Expand

In this Movie Christian Bale (Bruce Wayne) starts as millionaire orphan when his parents were killed. Michael Caine (Alfred Pennywort) plays Bruce Wayne’s butler. He acts as a father figure and conscience to Bruce. Caine makes it totally believable that his character would be willing to go from high society butler to the helper of a vigilante. Some of his scenes comforting young Bruce after the death of his parents are really touching.
The film starts with him as a young man in a prison in Asia. He has been there researching the criminal mind and learning to fight. We learn how Bruce got there as he relives through flashbacks the death of his parents, his thirst for revenge as an adult, and his ultimate decision to fight crime in Gotham. Through anger Bruce seeks to bury his guilt about his parent's deaths. He finds himself training with the mysterious Henri Ducard (Liam Nelson) and joining him in vigilante ring The League Of Shadows. He decides to leave them when he finds out their plans of taking over Gotham.
Bruce Wayne returns after 7 years to Gotham and his ninja training with Henri Ducard comes in handy. He uses Wayne Enterprise to cover his plans and make gadgets for himself. He goes back to the cave and turns it into great hiding spot, he makes the Batmobile and his costume. Everything had a symbol of a bat. Bale delivers one of the most unique takes on the dual persona that I've ever seen. His Wayne is a much more human character than in any of his previous incarnations. His desire to get revenge on his parent's murderer is one of the most emotional scenes in the film.
Then as Bale heads to Asia for training, he becomes a very physical character and you see him battling without his mask on. This makes him more believable when he puts on the Batman mask and starts fighting. Bale also plays Wayne as an irresponsible playboy in order to get rid of any suspicion about his double life. Those are some of the funniest scenes in the movie. Bale's performance as Batman is even more landmark.
I really enjoyed watching this movie. I have seen all of them and this is one of my favorites, I love how it’s so different from the original Batman movies. I love how the special effects and music getting together and falling right into scene, so it makes it more dramatic and more exciting.

'Batman Begins' is a reboot, comic book movie directed by Christopher Nolan, who, at the time, was still trying to make a big name for himself...this was the movie that put him on the map.

After the adaptations of Tim Burton's 'Batman' (1989) and 'Batman Returns' (1992), it seems that fans reacted fairly positive to them. Then came Joel Schumacher with his campy and unintentionally hilarious (but damn right awful) 'Batman Forever' (1995) and the atrocious 'Batman and Robin' (1997) where fans reacted negatively. It's easy to understand why.

Here, Christopher Nolan decides to polish things up with Christian Bale in the title role of Bruce Wayne aka "Batman". We get a glimpse of his childhood and origins as we learn that he has a huge fear of Bats, his loving parents then also decide to take him to the theater and that's where his parents are shot by a thug.

Young Bruce feels responsible for his parents' death and is left to live with Alfred, the butler (Michael Caine). Wayne, years later, goes off to train to become some sort of assassin as Ra'as Al Ghul (Liam Neeson) teaches him how to fight.

We get a lot of exposition and development to see how Batman becomes...Batman. Katie Holmes plays Rachel Dawes, Bruce's love interest. Holmes' performance does bother me a little in this movie and it's understandable as to how she landed a Razzie Award nomination for "Worst Supporting Actress".

Cillian Murphy plays the Scarecrow, we get some horrifying images of when he makes his victims hallucinate and cause them to act up.

'Batman Begins' is a reboot worth waiting for, it is darker, and less campy than the previous installments. Christian Bale plays a marvelous Bruce Wayne/Batman, the rest of the cast, including; Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman also commit to their performances. The standards for comic book movies has risen since this movie was released, and it's hard to see any other Batman movie made this perfect.

If you love dark and gritty movies, with splendid action and only the occasional joke here and there...then this movie is for you. It blends all these sub-genres very well and makes for a better-than-your-average comic book movie, I bet even non-comic book fans will love this movie as much as we do.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first installment in Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy is everything that an origin story, especially one about The Batman should be. It features excellent acting, perfectly paced writing, and a thoroughly satisfying adaptation of the character.
Even if it didn't garner the success that it has, this movie could have gone very far on merit of its cast alone. Morgan Freeman's Lucius Fox, Michael Caine's Alfred, and Liam Neeson's Ras al Ghul, are all perfect representations of their comic counterparts, and are highly entertaining. Bale plays a great Bruce Wayne, naive, and disillusioned at first, and confident and motivated later on in the film. And that raspy voice of his; well, that's just cool.
Nolan wrote this movie perfectly. Batman is really not even a character, until midway through the second act. Bruce Wayne undergoes a journey around the world, seeking to understand criminality, and training with the league of assassins where he comes to understand combat, and stealth tactics. The batsuit is explained also through a series of technological innovations that happened to be too expensive for mass production. Although this is a Batman movie, it is really a story about fear. The movie's villain Scarecrow seeks to control others with fear, and Batman uses his own fear of bats, to fight back against the injustices of the underworld.
The movie transcends the superhero genre. The action sequences, though immensely gratifying are not the film's focal point and are used to amplify the story's message. Batman begins is the first movie to truly understand what batman is about. It is about a man, who's life is plagued by fear; a man who has fallen down in life, time and time again, and who finally finds the courage to face his fear, and save his city.

This has some of the best exposition ever put to filmIn a time where comic book movies were complete jokes, in comes Christopher Nolan to create the first comic book movie masterpiece. Batman Begins is the definitive Batman origin story. This has some of the best exposition ever put to film with how they build up Batman.

Christian Bale's performance, I feel, gets too much backlash. Yeah, he has a gravelly voice (especially in the sequels), but I feel like people didn't get it. Don't get me wrong, I'll joke about it any day, but it makes sense as to why he has that voice. With Michael Keaton, he still sounded like Michael Keaton when he was Batman. Even the legendary Kevin Conroy (with his Batman from the Arkham games being my favorite Batman EVER) still sounds like Kevin Conroy when he was Batman.

When Christian Bale plays Batman, he does something that no Batman before him did: make his voice unrecognizable. Think about it, he does not sound like Christian Bale when he's playing Batman, he sounds like someone else. If Batman's goal is to make his voice unrecognizable, then he fully succeeded.

It's a movie with a great story and a dark movie in certain way. If you searching for a COMEDY film DON'T WATCH IT. Dialogues are perfect and the humor is very "batman-like". The cast is brialliant and so does the scenarios. This is a super-hero movie, if u want a DRAMA movie DON'T WATCH IT. This is for people that like dark (but not too dark) movies and like some reality and fantasy mix-up a little bit. And is very faithfull to the original character but, like most of the movies, they have to adapt so all can be explain in 2h and 30 min. All the things feats perfectly on the movie. Here we have a sympathetic backstory, a tantalizing origin, and an outrageous first adventure. Whereas Burton's first Batman flick sustained itself largely on Jack Nicholson's performance, here an allstar cast carries quality work from scene to scene. The sets are beautiful, the special effects are tasteful (not so overwrought as other, higher octane super-movies), the score is moving - the whole 2+ hour ride has atmosphere. Be warned that there is very little camp in this, substantially less than either of the Burton films. It's darker than any previous Batman film, though not heartless or hopeless. Batman Begins possesses a whole different kind of fun, with a rich world spiraling out from its central character, mounting to implausible struggles that feel particularly plausible within the film. Better than nearly any comic book movie to date, Batman Begins helps you suspend disbelief. Like Blade and X-Men, Batman Begins raises the bar for superhero films. Expand

A very dark, but thought-provoking take on Batman's origins. Christian Bale is the best Bruce Wayne ever cast in a film, his calmer, quieter demeanor captures Bruce's pain and internal struggles wonderfully. Veteran's Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman hold their own as well. Cillian Murphy is one creepy guy and he pulls off John Crane/Scarecrow magnificently. He delivers his dialogue so eerily, including the best line in the film; "He's here... the Batman!" The techs are first rate, particularly the cinematography, which gives us the feeling that people could actually live in Gotham. The actions and fight sequences are smart and well choreographed, if a little choppy. Overall a very well done superhero flick. I can't wait for The Dark Knight. Expand

I agree with other reviews, Katie Holmes was a mistake, and the writing became difficult at times (cheesiness by David Goyer as usual). But the story was strong, and it was great to see the reasoning behind everything...ninja training makes perfect sense with Batman's character..his cape and equipment, the symbolism of the bat, and the kick ass Batmobile all have a purpose. I thought the casting of Liam as a villain (a first for the gifted irishman) and Gary Oldman (known for villainous roles like Lee Harvey Oswalt in JFK) as a good guy were both brilliant moves. the only reason I rate this a 9 instead of the 10 it deserves: the completely outclassed Katie Holmes. PeopleChristopher Nolan effectively grounded his Batman universe from the very start, making the titular Caped Crusader compelling for a new generation, but never sacrificed the fun factor that only superhero films allow for to achieve it. People talk about Nolan's much darker Batman, but really it's no more dark that Tim Burton's vision from two decades ago. What we're really seeing is the difference between styles of comic-to-film adaptations - contemporary and (relatively) realistic, or stylised and fantastical. For every fan who loves Nolan's straight-faced treatment of the source material and plausible gadgets, you've got someone else who is attracted to Burton's gothic noir designs for Gotham City. Batman Begins gives us a entertainingly diverse cast of characters, all tweaked in some way from their comic counterparts to fit the origin story - a well-meaning but rough-around-the-edges Bruce Wayne (a sincere Christian Bale), a stern mentor with questionable morals (Liam Neeson) a supportive, grounded surrogate father (Michael Caine), an idealistic good-cop (Gary Oldman), a slimy gangster (Tom Wilkinson) and an appropriately creepy costumed antagonist in The Scarecrow (Cillian Murphy). Nolan and David S. Goyer completely strip back Batman to its core elements and themes, which allows for great character moments and emotion aplenty in addition to all the high-concept heroics. As well-executed as the action is, it's the touching early scenes of young Bruce coming to terms with his parents' deaths and his imposing family legacy that are the most memorable, accompanied by James Newton Howard and Hans Zimmer's score which morphs from dramatic and booming to low-key and tear-inducing. Begins also gratifyingly doesn't fall into the traps that the sequels do - the plot is relatively direct, with flashbacks adding colour to the story and characters rather than an over-reliance on plot twists and melodrama. Batman Begins transcends genre - it's a great superhero film, a great coming-of-age film, a great road movie, and a great thematically-heavy character piece. I'll admit that I love Tim Burton's Batman, but I also love Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins. They're both rewarding for different reasons, and I find it exceedingly difficult to rank one above the other. Expand

The whole origin story of Batman is nailed brilliantly here and the plot from then on is very gripping. We see a great Balance between the character of Bruce Nolan and the character of Batman and Christian Bale plays these roles very well as well as the rest of the cast, everyone seems to play their parts perfectly. The writing and direction are superb and fit the dark and realistic tone of the film and overall, it's just a brilliant film. My only problems with it are that it does have a few slow and boring moments and also the main villains don't really get much time to shine, but even so these problems seem petty compared to everything this film gets right.
