Of all the major comic book characters to transition to a less static visual media, none has been more mistreated than the Bat-Man. As originally envisioned by creator Bob Kane in 1939, Batman was a dark character who walked the tightropeOf all the major comic book characters to transition to a less static visual media, none has been more mistreated than the Bat-Man. As originally envisioned by creator Bob Kane in 1939, Batman was a dark character who walked the tightrope between hero and vigilante. That was his image until the 1960s, when the campy TV series starring Adam West transformed the character into a silly-but-likable good guy in gray spandex. Tim Burton re-invented Batman for a surreal (and, at the time, highly anticipated) 1989 feature, but the movie ended up focusing more on The Joker, leaving the titular hero to lick his wounds as a supporting character. By the time that Batman series reached its third movie, it had fallen back to the campy level of its TV predecessor. Now, there's nothing wrong with camp, per se, but, by the 1997 arrival of Batman and Robin, fans had had enough. Batman looked dead, at least until now.

With Batman Begins, director Christopher Nolan has gone back to basics, jettisoning both the silliness of the TV incarnation and the gothic and fetishist elements of the '90s version. This is a hard-core, down-and-gritty origin story - the tale of, as one might reasonably expect, how Batman begins. It isn't intended as a "prequel" to the 1989 film - not only is Gotham City a completely different place, but key events of the Batman chronology are re-spun. Batman Begins is designed as the start of a new life, a reboot for the franchise. In the process, Nolan has not only crafted the best Batman movie, but arguably the second-best motion picture superhero narrative (topped only by the linked duo of Superman and Superman II). For those who thought Spider-Man and X-Men had a lot to offer, wait till you see where this film goes.

To tell this first story of Batman, Nolan and co-screenwriter David Goyer weave established elements of the Caped Crusader's history into a coherent tapestry that includes material of their own devising. We see what prompts Batman to choose his image, how the Batcave is developed, where the suit and utility belt come from, and what the secret of the Batmobile is. Rather than de-mythologizing Batman, this provides us with better understanding of who he is and what motivates him - aspects whose absence were glaringly evident when Tim Burton brought his vision of the superhero to the screen 16 years ago.

Although there's less of a stylized noir feeling to Batman Begins that there was to Batman, Nolan nevertheless keeps things dark, since bats hunt at night. The action scenes are, for the most part, kinetic and exciting - things that have rarely been true of fights and chases in the superhero's previous incarnations. Burton was at a loss how to do action, and Schumacher was perfunctory. Nolan understands how to elevate the adrenaline level, with interesting camera angles, strong editing, and effective special effects work (light on CGI and heavy on models and working gadgets) all contributing.

Batman Begins is a strong re-start to a franchise that deserves better than it has often been accorded. The ending provides a direct lead-in to another Batman movie, and Nolan is on the record as saying he envisions making a trilogy. The next installment is probably three years off, but, in the meantime, we have Bryan Singer's re-invention of Warner Brother's other DC goliath, Superman Returns. If Singer can do for Superman what Nolan has done for Batman, then the summer of 2006 will have at least one film to anticipate.

But it is an extremely good film, that along with the original Batman could very well be the best of the Batman films(thought perhaps just lacking the original film's sophistication). People may find this blasphemy, but I did prefer this over The Dark Knight, but that was still very good. Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins is stylish, dark and gritty, pretty much what Batman should be. I have seen complaints that the film "contradicts" the 1989 film. Perhaps so, but what I can say in the film's defence is that Batman Begins is sort of a very loose prequel to the original movies.

Visually, Batman Begins looks absolutely incredible! It could very well be the most beautiful visually of the Batman films, with beautiful cinematography and a simply dazzling view of Gotham City itself. Another asset I appreciated was that the music score didn't overpower the action, in fact it gave some atmospheric flavour to it. As much as Danny Elfman's scores were outstanding and definitely memorable, Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard do a great job with the score.

The script is taut and well-written with lines that really make you think along with some occasional offbeat humour, the plot isn't convoluted or predictable but original, the film moves briskly(the second half was marginally better in terms of pacing to the first half though but that is in no way a flaw) and the action is explosive particularly the climax and the bat-mobile car-chase. Also Christopher Nolan's direction is excellent.

The acting, aside from the visuals is what drives the film. Christian Bale is for me the best Batman since Michael Keaton. In the role of Batman he is suitably dark and brooding, like Batman should be, and as Bruce Wayne, he is dashing, handsome and ambitious. Katie Holmes actually surprised me and in a good way. She wasn't bland or annoying, I actually found her sympathetic and surprisingly good. Liam Neeson is also very good, though he has been better, while Michael Caine is perfect as Alfred. Cillian Murphy, Tom Wilkinson and the excellent, underrated Gary Oldman are also solid in their roles, while Morgan Freeman is wonderful as always.

Overall, a brilliant film that is visually stunning, gripping and atmospheric. 9.5/10 Bethany Cox

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie started with Bruce at 8 years old exposed to his deepest fear, which is bats, then the sequence of movie continues with an enjoyable and interrelated scenes.

When Alfred ask Bruce, while he was preparing batman costume, "why bats ?", Bruce said "bats frighten me, it's time my enemies shared my dread". and these words indicate that Bruce face his deepest fear (bats) and now he is fearless.

it is a good movie, you should watch it before dark knight because there are some related scenes, which make Dark Knight more masterpiece than it is.

Batman Begins takes us to the dark corners in the life of billionaire Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale), who is rescued from an anonymous Asian prison by the mysterious Henri Ducard (Liam Neeson). Bruce, who has been haunted by the memory of seeing his parents gunned down in front of him, has been wandering the world, picking fights with small-time thugs until Ducard finds him and offers him an alternative to his nomadic existence. Ducard wants to train Bruce so he can become a member of the League of Shadows, the organization presided over by Ra's Al Ghul (Ken Watanabe). The League of Shadows is dedicated to restoring "balance" to a world in which "criminals thrive on the indulgence of society's understanding."

Of the five well-known actors to don the cape and cowl (Adam West, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Christian Bale), there's little doubt that Bale is the most talented and the most effective. We believe him as both Bruce Wayne and Batman and, while in the latter role, he seems more than just a face behind the mask. In order to play this part, Bale had to gain about 85 pounds (re-acquiring the 65 pounds lost from his work in The Machinist and putting on an additional 20 pounds of muscle). Keaton, Kilmer, and Clooney allowed the costume to dominate their performances. Here, it's the other way around. Bale comes close to being the definitive Batman.

He is surrounded by an exceptional supporting cast, with Oscar-winners Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman leading the way. Also on hand are Gary Oldman, playing against type as a good guy; Tom Wilkinson, chewing a little on the scenery; Ken Watanabe, who barely speaks a word; and a chilling Cillian Murphy. Katie Holmes has the thankless role of the "love interest" - one of the few elements of Batman Begins that doesn't work. Holmes and Bale never "click" (at least not in the way that Christopher Reeve and Margo Kidder did in Superman, or Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst in Spider-Man), and her character feels superfluous - just a damsel in distress.

Batman Begins is a strong re-start to a franchise that deserves better than it has often been accorded.

Bruce Wayne is a tortured soul. Batman is a flawed combatant. This creates a super-hero who is vulnerable.

Weaknesses in super-heroes is pivotal to creating emotional attachment. It, also, serves to bring them down to a human level and, therefore, relatable to our own pains and anguishes.

However, the film does have flaws. It's one thing hearing a line delivered once or twice. But three or more times is silly. Also, Zsasz is an under-developed character. Lastly, it's made evident that Bruce Wayne learns the meaning of fear through stealing goods, yet, they are his own goods.

A very good reboot and the finest Batman film.

Absolute perfect reboot of a comic book character into our modern times.

Batman Begins reinvents the origin story of Bruce Wayne/Batman and Christian Bale plays a realistic take on the character. While this may not be the perfect Batman from the comic books, as a film, this stands as the best origin story ever told.

Liam Neeson plays a perfect Ras Al Ghul. His dialogue, his motivations are what made him a memorable and capable villain for the Dark Knight. The addition of him being Batman's teacher was done superbly and brought a new layer to the character we only thought we knew.

The overall direction by Nolan felt ground-breaking to say the least for a comic book movie, and had re-invented the entire scope of what modern comic book characters can be in live-action format.

As a first part of a trilogy, this was the perfect start.

It was a realistic and dark film that actually has serious meanings and conflicts instead of somebody trying to demolish the world or conquer it. It's what filmmakers should've learned before making terrible films with the same genre. Christopher Nolan is one of my favorite directors because of this and he deserves to be recongnized as one of the best.

This is one of the best reboots that a franchise can pull off. This film takes some of the worlds biggest issues and actually intercepts it in a realistic way. Drug lords, economic breakdowns, falling of societies, the dark theme. This film has everything a batfan could be wishing for, not only that but its also emotional as you grow up. I actually more alike miss the character of The Dark Knight from 2005-2012. This was the best Batman on screen and was able to create something so phenomenal that no one has ever experienced before. From the opening to the climax, this film created something so emotionally incredible that there is no reason to miss this franchise. Even if your not a batfan or superhero fan, this film is much more then that, it created one of the most memorable and loved comic book superhero and made it something unique. Christopher Nolan directed this film so incredibly that Zack Snyder will never be able to achieve HALF of what Christopher Nolan did. And dont even get me started on the INCREDIBLE composer Hans Zimmer. By far one of the best orchestral soundtracks I heard, has a dark and rising theme. Its so fun to listen to and actually gives you goosebumps. The only downside is there are times.. oh who am I kidding this film is incredible.

Overall: Batman Begins is the best starter to a franchise that has been loved by millions, Christian Bales performance of The Dark Knight is unforgettable and the shear though and provoked direction of Christopher Nolan gives the franchise heart.

Overall: 8.1/10

A raw 12 round boxing match, that is engaging throughout the night.

Batman Begins

Christopher Nolan, as reported, plans to take over the DC universe to get funded for his larger than life films like Inception and Interstellar. But this plan itself is packed with an enormous amount of love for this caped crusader. And exerting that love by going through his homework through and through, you can easily see Nolan swooping in every fanboy moment on the screen. And as much as the film goes to an incredible amount of length just to punch you with that awe gasping scene, the plot moves swift, smooth and for once linearly. The plot is textbook origin tale of Bruce Wayne discovering the inner Batman in him.

Joining Nolan on script writing is David S. Goyer, a familiar face in the gothic comic world whose, as reported, lofty plot devices are grounded with signature writing style by him. And this screenplay is often considered to be a literary example for the newcomers in screenwriting, since it, despite being dipped in superhero world, treats its characters like a crime drama genre, the punches doesn't come off empty, but in bleak honesty and in black(!)

For a film that easily runs over 3 hours- or it definitely looks like it- the editing deserves a mention for its sharpness that is elevated by a whisky cinematography and exhilarating background score. Nolan has been upfront about staging Batman as a horror rather than a beloved superhero with everything sunny in the background. And that is why the themes and storylines adapted from the comic books deals with the same messy head-spinning images. There are some gruesome special effects in here that will not be seen later in the trilogy. This visual storytelling treat is something that will later in Nolan's filmography is going to expand and even take over the cinematic life of its own; you can see the hints here, how Nolan and Batman Begins.

Batman Begins is the definitive Batman origin story. This has some of the best exposition ever put to film with how they build up Batman.

Christian Bale's performance, I feel, gets too much backlash. Yeah, he has a gravelly voice (especially in the sequels), but I feel like people didn't get it. Don't get me wrong, I'll joke about it any day, but it makes sense as to why he has that voice. With Michael Keaton, he still sounded like Michael Keaton when he was Batman. Even the legendary Kevin Conroy (with his Batman from the Arkham games being my favorite Batman EVER) still sounds like Kevin Conroy when he was Batman.

When Christian Bale plays Batman, he does something that no Batman before him did: make his voice unrecognizable. Think about it, he does not sound like Christian Bale when he's playing Batman, he sounds like someone else. If Batman's goal is to make his voice unrecognizable, then he fully succeeded.

After intensive training with the guru Ra's al Ghul, he becomes a vigilante who will use all his money and power to chase the criminals of Gotham City. This film is based on the characters of DC Comics and has screenplay by Christopher Nolan (who also ensures the direction) and David S. Goyer. It has the participation of Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Liam Neeson, Katie Holmes, Ken Watanabe, Cillian Murphy and Morgan Freeman.

This film is excellent in many ways, beginning with the setting and ambiance in which the story takes place. Contrary to what was the norm of the films inspired by comics, the film is quite realistic and brings the characters to a minimally credible environment. Gotham City is equal to any current metropolitan city, Bruce Wayne could be the heir of any multi-million dollar corporation we know. The script is also good, remaining true to the comics, respecting them. The film appreciated some aspects that cinema hitherto ignored as the training and preparation that Wayne made to become Batman, allowing the public to understand how the character came to be. The most poorly developed aspect were the several attempts to make humor and the unhappy jokes. This film is too dramatic for such things. Another positive aspect is the cast, carefully chosen. We must highlight particularly the performances, deeply inspired, of Liam Neeson, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine. Christian Bale had, in this movie, the consecration of his career, showing great maturity and how much he has evolved since "American Psycho". Finally, we must also mention the quality of special visual and sound effects, quietly enriching the movie without stealing the scene to the actors and the story itself.

After a series of badly achieved and poorly made movies, the art of cinema finally made the deserved honors the Batman story. Finally!

This film delves into the origins of batman, and how he became the feared protector of gotham we all know and love, and it hits all the right notes. The actors all do a great job, the plot is engaging, and the movie nails the dark and serious tone that I think suits batman best. Combine this was some really suspenseful action, and some amazing lines, and this is a really good superhero movie! Its not the best one of its kind (though that could be a bit of bias speaking seeing as I'm not the biggest DC fan), but its still really good! And this movie gets extra brownie points for spawning my favorite batman movie, the dark knight. Expand

It's sequel gets all the credit, and i consider The Dark Knight to be fcking great, but this movie needs more attention. This movie is the ultimate origin movie. It is smart and very well narrated. I love Chris Nolan narrative, and this movie is a example of Chris Nolan's greatness at telling a story. This movie has a main philosophical theme, and you don't need to overthink the movie to get that the main theme is fear. The whole movie is about how these 4 corners use fear, and we could say that this is a 4 act movie. In the first act we get introduced to Bruce Wayne, the protagonist. We get introduced to his tragedy, and despite that we all know Batman's origin story for sure, this movie can make this tragedy still interesting and a resource for Bruce to become Batman. Scarecrow and Ra's Al Ghul may not be the most famous Batman villains, but in this movie they are pretty great villains, and i think that Ra's Al Ghul works perfectly in this movie. I want to end this short review here to say that this movie is amazing.

Concerning theBatman Begins is a very good introductory to Nolan's Batman and just like many backstories it spends a huge amount of time developing and introducing the different characters we all know and love at the end of the trilogy. Concerning the narrative, there isn't much tension built up and you never really feel as if any of the main characters could actually die, hell there's even humour sprinkled around in very serious scenes. But in all seriousness, if you want to watch Nolan's Batman movies, I highly recommend to not skip this one, it's surely not as good ass the others, but still important nonetheless. Expand

I didn't know what to expect from it. I just wanted to watch The Dark Knight and I had heard that it was a sequel to this movie, so I had to see this first in order to have some "actual" good time. Instead I ended up really liking this one. This is the kind of movie I'd call something that defined the cinema of the mid 2000s. And it's definitely for all the good reasons.

The movie begins with Bruce Wayne being in prison and then being recruited by The League of Assassins to become one of them. Normally I hate the idea that movies use by beginning at some random event and then giving exposition of the past. It happens everywhere - Sonic the Hedgehog, Megamind, Birds of Prey, Man of Steel, it happens in so many places. But I won't complain about that, considering that none of the movies I can think of came before this. So let's just say it was a new idea back then.

The way Bruce Wayne comes back and realises he can't do anything to the bad guys because they know he has a lot to lose and so takes the mantle so that they fear the same thing as him was very exciting. It's one of the key moments of this movie I always look forward to whenever I watch this movie. I really like how he slowly transforms into Batman, initially beginning with just a regular costume and then slowly upgrading his suit, weapons and finally his Batmobile.

I didn't know anything about any Batman villain other than Joker, Deathstroke, Harley Quinn and Killer Croc. So the villains of this movie namely Ra's al Ghul and Scarecrow were completely new to me. Whatever they'd have done with these characters, I'd have accepted it all like a blank slate. And they really did them perfectly. Ra's wanted Batman to kill, while Scarecrow wanted to instill fear in all the residents of Gotham. Both of these motives are characteristics that define Batman - someone who will instill fear in the midsn of all the criminals but will never kill. Though that's one problem in this movie since he kills a lot - first the fake Ra's, then the League of Assassins in the burning building, then a cop in a police car and finally Ra's himself (his no kill rule includes saving people so saying that he didn't save him is a debunked excuse).

The movie has aged pretty poorly in terms of video quality. It is very grainy and the colours are also very dull which can easily get mixed if watched on a new TV. This is really weird because Superman Returns came out just a year later but its video quality is absolutely perfect in spite of being made by the same company. It needs to be remastered to 4K using AI upscaling and added more colour variations so that it is fit to be watched. Once that happens, I'd really be willing to watch it again.

Review Title: The Legend Begins

Batman Begins sees the rise of a man letting go of his anger and guilt to become something that Gotham needs during perhaps the worst time for crime in Gotham's history. We see a Bruce Wayne that is conflicted not just morally but emotionally in that he wants to be with his childhood love Rachel Dawes but knows deep down the time isn't right. The villains in this movie are exceptional in their own way, one literally using the law to his advantage of crime and the other could honestly care less about the laws of man and simply goes by his own order's code. Batman Begins was the start of perhaps the greatest trilogy in the history of cinema and gets a 9/10 from me.

But something remains that, at the time, we're talking about 2005 when the film came out, it was without a shadow of a doubt extraordinary. And for this he must be given acknowledgment and credit. This is a really good movie and a real fun ride. The highlight is almost definitely the world building placed around Gotham city. The rest of this film just doesn’t seem to wow me as it does others. It’s good granted but it’s not great.

A perfect beginning to a perfect trilogy. Michael Caine is the best Alfred and Bale was excellent Batman

A new movie about Batman, which if it was up to me, I would consider it the best movie of this character. Why? Because for the first time, it is centered on "Bruce Wayne", not under the shadow of Batman! Do not spoil the rhythm of the film.
For example, I wanted to understand why Batman's voice is like this. Does Bill do it himself? Yes. Because Nolan works with IMAX cameras and does not add sound later. But they could work with Voice Mudalators.
The fact that Batman is not in the first third and appears after that is not interesting for the first movie, but we all know that if this were not the case, the sales of the movie would have decreased drastically.
Action sequences don't grab your heart because the camera constantly rotates and is unstable. For example, you can't recognize people in the battle on ice or the opening sequence.
Bruce Wayne's lover is unfortunately one of the weakest. That is, unlike Batman and Bruce Wayne, Rachel Dawes does not open up to us at all and we cannot identify with her.
However, the performance of all the actors, special effects, the badness of the movie, the great twists, the theme of the epic story, etc. are all seen in the movie.
