One of the best movies I saw in a theater this year. I know it's almost blasphemous to say, but I liked this Batman even better than the Keaton/Nicholson Batman. This is simply a very cool film.

This pre-sequel makes a fictional character be realistic. What this movie does for Batman its pretty much is authentication. If Batman was to be real this would be the reason and how he got there. The only flaw in the movie was Katie Holmes... she just didn't fit the role because she got no adult presence. Christian Bale did great, well casted. I also liked the fact that it wasnt a linear story, there was a twist that fit the story(liam Neeson's envolvement...). I will buy this movie in dvd, I wont burn a copy from a rental, LOL! Expand

Great story, well-realized Bruce/Bat personae, beautiful visuals, thrilling soundtrack, wild action. Left this viewer both deeply satisfied and wanting MORE! Lost half a point for stereotypic (at best) female characterization and another half because fight scenes tried to exemplify "men most fear what they cannot see" too much. Fascinating how strong Bruce is even before training with Ducard, enthralling how graceful and lithe he becomes inside the BatSuit. Exhilerating movie experince! Expand

Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Liam Neeson, and almost all the others deliver performances that I didn't think were possible in a Superhero movie. I thought the casting of Liam as a villain (a first for the gifted irishman) and Gary Oldman (known for villainous roles like Lee Harvey Oswalt in JFK) as a good guy were both brilliant moves. the only reason I rate this a 9 instead of the 10 it deserves: the completely outclassed Katie Holmes. Thankfully, Nolan has replaced her with Maggie gylenhaal and has added even more good cast members to make me vibrate in anticipation of the Dark Knight: Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhart, and Anthony Michael Hall. July 18, 2008 cannot come fast enough!! Expand

PeopleChristopher Nolan effectively grounded his Batman universe from the very start, making the titular Caped Crusader compelling for a new generation, but never sacrificed the fun factor that only superhero films allow for to achieve it. People talk about Nolan's much darker Batman, but really it's no more dark that Tim Burton's vision from two decades ago. What we're really seeing is the difference between styles of comic-to-film adaptations - contemporary and (relatively) realistic, or stylised and fantastical. For every fan who loves Nolan's straight-faced treatment of the source material and plausible gadgets, you've got someone else who is attracted to Burton's gothic noir designs for Gotham City. Batman Begins gives us a entertainingly diverse cast of characters, all tweaked in some way from their comic counterparts to fit the origin story - a well-meaning but rough-around-the-edges Bruce Wayne (a sincere Christian Bale), a stern mentor with questionable morals (Liam Neeson) a supportive, grounded surrogate father (Michael Caine), an idealistic good-cop (Gary Oldman), a slimy gangster (Tom Wilkinson) and an appropriately creepy costumed antagonist in The Scarecrow (Cillian Murphy). Nolan and David S. Goyer completely strip back Batman to its core elements and themes, which allows for great character moments and emotion aplenty in addition to all the high-concept heroics. As well-executed as the action is, it's the touching early scenes of young Bruce coming to terms with his parents' deaths and his imposing family legacy that are the most memorable, accompanied by James Newton Howard and Hans Zimmer's score which morphs from dramatic and booming to low-key and tear-inducing. Begins also gratifyingly doesn't fall into the traps that the sequels do - the plot is relatively direct, with flashbacks adding colour to the story and characters rather than an over-reliance on plot twists and melodrama. Batman Begins transcends genre - it's a great superhero film, a great coming-of-age film, a great road movie, and a great thematically-heavy character piece. I'll admit that I love Tim Burton's Batman, but I also love Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins. They're both rewarding for different reasons, and I find it exceedingly difficult to rank one above the other. Expand

I loved Tim Burton's Batman - 12 years old when it came out I was the perfect age for it and I also enjoyed Batman Returns. The franchise went so wrong under Joel Schumacher that I wasn't sure I wanted it resurrected. Not least because Batman was one of the few comics I read and enjoyed as a kid and was always my favorite superhero. However, I am pleased to report I could not have been more wrong about how great Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins is. This is better than Burton. The story is as good an origin story as you'll find - covering all the major (true-to-the-comic) events, and not wasting ages on them. We see Wayne's all-important training period (previously ignored), and his connection to the Tibetan shadow-ninja clan led by Ra's Al Ghul. We see Bruce come up with ideas for his symbol, his costume, his gadgets, his car, his cave - IT ALL FITS SO PERFECTLY. The fights are great, the Bat-gadgets all there, the car is amazing, the plot is thorough and exciting, Gotham looks great, Batman really is frightening & menacing (and lethal!).. And the scenes with the bats themselves FINALLY get across the idea of how scary they can be. Overall, I'd have to label Batman Begins 'The best prequel movie ever - it's a well written, authoritatively directed, impeccably acted (especially by Bale's powerhouse lead performance and Cillian Murphy's sickly menacing Scarecrow) and very high quality production. Indeed, most other summer blockbusters could learn a thing or two from Batman Begins. If the Batman franchise died under it's own gaudiness years ago, let us rejoice this glorious rebirth - Batman truly does begin here. Expand

Tim Burton's was to bring you into the fantasy world of Gotham City.
But this film is much closer to our daily lives.

All I want now is if Bale can stop slurring the words when he speaks, then it would be perfect.

The Scarecrow was a cool choice for this movie, not too over the top to distract you but has that dark gritty side the movie deserves. I love the long look into Wayne's evolution to Batman. Plot: Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) is the son of Thomas and Martha Wayne. He grows up very rich due to his father's ownership of Wayne Tower and has a very good relationship to them. However after leaving an opera they are murdered in front of his very eyes. As he grows up as a rich child under the care of his butler Alfred (Michael Caine) he feels guilty for their murder. When he decides to confront the mob boss controlling much distortion in Gotham City he realizes that he hasn't experienced true suffering and must accquire that feeling in order to protect those less fortunate. As he ignores his riches, he lives as a homeless man who must steal in order to survive, he goes from location to location into prison in order to beat up the prisoners. One day, Ducard (Liam Neeson) bails him out of prison and persuades him to participate in the initiation of the League of Shadows in an attempt to make Wayne become one with the darkness to make him stronger. After Wayne confronts his fear of bats and is ready to become a member, he lastly has to kill a man who has commited evil. When he refuses he destroys their temple and gets out alive and saves Ducard. When he returns to Gotham, his company has been taken over as he is still granted a position within it. He collaborates with fellow co worker Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman) as he uses an endless supply of technology which combined with his training allow him to become the vigilante known as Batman as he protects Gotham from evil and injustice. Compared to Batman: Batman Begins gives Batman the true origin story he deserves as a more realistic take on Batman, as his origins are thoroughly explored. My opinion: Batman Begins is the ultimate introduction to Batman as the audience will realize the hardship and struggle he has gone through in order to become the superhero that he is. I reccomend this to any Batman fan and to anyone who is into psycology, anybody who hasn't seen a live action Batman movie, and to anybody interested into deep storylines, as well as a lawyer. Expand

The closest we ever got to a great treatment was from Tim Burton's first "Batman" movie, and even then it was only the Joker that made the movie watchable - Michael Keaton was utterly boring, and the movie itself remained visually flat and uninteresting.

With Nolan, however, we get "Batman Begins" - a joyfully fantastic new take on the caped crusader's origins. Although the film has a lot of ugly browns to it, particularly during the last act, Christian Bale delivers a tensely convincing Bruce Wayne as the conflicted and disillusioned man who develops a crime-fighting alter ego to clean up the streets of Gotham. Liam Neeson is a strong villain and fun to watch, and his death is one of my favorite film villain deaths of all time. The music is awesome, the action scenes are great, and it's certainly the easiest of the Nolan Batman films to follow.

I couldn't have been more right. Batman Begins isn't perfect. It didn't quite erase all of the silliness inherent in comic book adaptations, which Nolan would later correct to unimaginable lengths in The Dark Knight, but at the time of its release it may still have been the grittiest, most absorbingly realistic superhero movie ever made. This is a dark, atmospheric movie, with real storytelling, and actual dramatic heft. It marks a more than solid beginning to the greatest superhero trilogy ever, even if it's still a good bit short of The Dark Knight, and in some ways The Dark Knight Rises. For Nolan's first time working on a big action movie it's fantastic. By the way, even though Maggie Gylanhaal may technically be a better actress, Katie Holmes is way hotter ;) Expand

Roger Moore as James Bond and took him into a cartoon, after succession occurred with Timothy Dalton and a stoic interpretation on the same wavelength as the expeditious Sean Connery and people turned away. The public had become accustomed to a new facet of the character and repudiated the return to their sources (or the general idea that previously existed on the character). If Batman and Robin would have been the first film of 1989, may not have generated much rejection (was more in line with what you remember from the Adam West series). But I used (and fascinated) with Burton's dark vision, just became the worst sacrilege that he could make the character, and the series went into a freezer which take years to emerge.
But Christopher Nolan majestual managed to save this doomed series.
Certainly the combination is more than interesting. First, Goyer and Nolan decide counting from zero overcast history, even with sagging elements of continuity with Burton's films.
Second, is the epic view. Not only do we see the origin of Bruce Wayne Batman, but its evolution.
The story is beautifully told, The origin of the character is totally brilliant but the film begins to falter a bit when Wayne is now Batman. Especially the lack of true brilliance of his villains: the Scarecrow is simply a psychopathic killer, whose origin is unknown. Ra's Al Ghul that the comic was an immortal is blurred, lacking depth or greater, perhaps, as the focus of the script indicates, is profiled secondary mode, so as not to steal the overcast scene. Maybe Carmine Falcone is, in his brief, most brilliant, cynical and sinister villains disguised. In if the story is not quite good and is still the subject of children but the performances are superb, and certainly Christian Bale is the definitive Batman. The score is excellent, somehow, Batman leaves his scientific side, relegating it to a new character as Lucius Fox, the relationship with childhood sweetheart, played by Katie Holmes, is warm, the villains plan is in a sense recycling plan of the first Batman Joker. But they are very minor flaws compared to the density, brilliance and excellence of the film.
It is the beginning of an epic new era, that of a gentleman, a vigilante protector, a dark knight. You must see it.
My Score: 9.3

It all begins with a unique concept to the main antagonist; Ra's al Ghul, and what his motivations are. This pushes our main hero; Bruce Wayne to the greater good. It’s a story that focus big on positivity, humanity and the overall purpose of society -- this deeply made the whole plot a lot more unique than one expected to experience. It’s a surreal popcorn-event of realistic action with a pacing that really delivers a thrilling third act. A lot of credit to C Nolan is indeed needed -- even though the film would have surpassed expectations even more if the characters would have had more development and inner struggles to them, less expositions and some lesser cheesy moments. The beginning and setup to Batman is done unbelievably well, taking it's time and preparing the character. But it has it's share of flaws. Christopher Nolan's dark interpretation of Batman is stunning, although it would shine more in later years. This is the origins story so you have all of the early Bruce Wayne things which, in my opinion, are the only things that DON'T work with the dark mood. Once that's done is when you get the true Batman in a new style that is pure awesome. I do feel they could have used better villains (Ra Ja'Ghoul and Scarecrow, really?), but this was his first go and it's an amazing attempt. Acting's stunning and it's visually amazing. Batman Begins is a film that was supposed to reboot the Batman franchise after the awful 1997 movie Batman and Robin. Batman Begins shows how Bruce Wayne, the owner of Wayne Enterprises becomes Batman. The story has a darker tone to it, which I like because I am a huge sucker for dark stories in anything. The acting was top notch for all characters, the action scenes were awesome, and the directing was clearly the best seeing how great the movie was. Normally, I would be skeptical about reboots, seeing as they could go either way, but Christopher Nolan did an outstanding job with this movie. Not that it's bad, it's just not as good as most people say it is. My biggest problem? The fact that the characters analyze EVERY SINGLE THING THAT HAPPENS. Don't get me wrong, what they have to say is interesting. But it's clearly the director speaking through the characters, not the characters speaking for themselves. As a result, the characters often get lost in Nolan's overly reverential script and pervasive darkness. That said, I still enjoy it. The action is good (even if the shaky-cam is distracting), the story itself is clever, and all the actors do their best with what they've been given. Standouts include Christian Bale and Morgan Freeman. If the movie just allowed its themes to develop naturally, rather than shoving it in our faces, it could have been incredible. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Batman Begins is a great origin story film for the Dark Knight and it is very strong in it's sense of darkness and emotion. It has some enjoyable action and themes that make this a grand adventure that I think that both Batman and Non-Batman fans can enjoy. The only downside I would probably have to say about this film is that it may not focus a ton on Batman antagonists unlike other Batman films which is a bit of a pity because as we all should know, villains in the Batman universe are great characters we love to hate, but luckily Ra's al Ghul is still cool along with the Scarecrow and these minor problems don't appear in the sequels. One other thing about this film is that it will seem a little slow in the beginning half of the film, but the ending is enjoyable. Batman Begins is an overall great superhero film, I'd recommend it. The first Act is magnificent. I loved watching Bruce travel to the corners of the world to understand the criminal mind, I loved the training sequences where Ra's Al Ghul taught Bruce that he mustn't bury his fears, he must confront them. And the relationship they developed between Bruce and Alfred is heartwarming. My biggest issue with the film is its 3rd Act which was literally jam packed with action. That was the only part of the film I found boring. It's clear that Nolan wanted to utilise the 3rd Act to sell the movie and fair enough but it really seemed as though the film dropped its ideas for the sake of action. There are just too many supporting characters and the film can't develop them all properly. Scarecrow was a pretty pointless villain who could have easily been written off without affecting the plot. And perhaps the most annoying part of the film is Rachel. Because firstly Katie Holmes gives a terrible performance as Rachel Dawes and secondly the character is not written well. The relationship between Bruce and Rachel had little to no chemistry. And for the record I liked the action scenes in Batman Begins (and Dark Knight). Yes it's hard to know what's going on but in Nolan's films it's not clarity and precision that's ever emphasised, it's the movement and the rhythm that makes the editing effective. It blend in very well with Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard's score. So all-in-all Batman Begins is a very impressive film with a somewhat underwhelming 3rd Act. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. An epic and gritty imagination of DC Comics' most famous vigilante is masterfully brought to the big screen by Christopher Nolan, the director of Inception. Christopher Nolan reimagines almost every detail of Batman and give a better reimagining. For example the Bat Mobile becomes the Bat Tumbler, Batman's suit ditches all yellow, blue, and gray, for just a plain solid black Batman suit. And even the Batman logo gets an even more realistic bat reboot. Except some characters, even though they were well acted, they needed more costume detail. Like the Scarecrow, his mask and fear toxin looked awesome, but he didn't have any farm or scarecrow clothes or hat or farm weapons. Ra's al Ghul would've looked a bit better with a beard resembling the comic books or if he went shirtless in battles. And they didn't show Victor Zsasz's tally mark scars, just his knife he used. But still the movie was epic, with an all star cast in each movie or sequel that improves on the prequel. Good job Christopher Nolan! Expand

Its not perfect, but Batman Begins benefits from strong characters, great dialogue, thrilling action sequences, a sturdy plot and a surprising emotional depth.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A movie that is absolutely brilliant until the last 3rd. I'm sure the car chase scene sounded cool but it was kind of cringy and the final scene is sort of cliche and basic. Better than The Dark Knight in certain aspects. Would definitely recommend it. In this Movie Christian Bale (Bruce Wayne) starts as millionaire orphan when his parents were killed. Michael Caine (Alfred Pennywort) plays Bruce Wayne’s butler. He acts as a father figure and conscience to Bruce. Caine makes it totally believable that his character would be willing to go from high society butler to the helper of a vigilante. Some of his scenes comforting young Bruce after the death of his parents are really touching.
The film starts with him as a young man in a prison in Asia. He has been there researching the criminal mind and learning to fight. We learn how Bruce got there as he relives through flashbacks the death of his parents, his thirst for revenge as an adult, and his ultimate decision to fight crime in Gotham. Through anger Bruce seeks to bury his guilt about his parent's deaths. He finds himself training with the mysterious Henri Ducard (Liam Nelson) and joining him in vigilante ring The League Of Shadows. He decides to leave them when he finds out their plans of taking over Gotham.
Bruce Wayne returns after 7 years to Gotham and his ninja training with Henri Ducard comes in handy. He uses Wayne Enterprise to cover his plans and make gadgets for himself. He goes back to the cave and turns it into great hiding spot, he makes the Batmobile and his costume. Everything had a symbol of a bat. Bale delivers one of the most unique takes on the dual persona that I've ever seen. His Wayne is a much more human character than in any of his previous incarnations. His desire to get revenge on his parent's murderer is one of the most emotional scenes in the film.
Then as Bale heads to Asia for training, he becomes a very physical character and you see him battling without his mask on. This makes him more believable when he puts on the Batman mask and starts fighting. Bale also plays Wayne as an irresponsible playboy in order to get rid of any suspicion about his double life. Those are some of the funniest scenes in the movie. Bale's performance as Batman is even more landmark.
I really enjoyed watching this movie. I have seen all of them and this is one of my favorites, I love how it’s so different from the original Batman movies. I love how the special effects and music getting together and falling right into scene, so it makes it more dramatic and more exciting.

Revitalising the genre in a flurry of fast-paced action and convincing character beats, Christopher Nolan manages to make Batman not only relevant again, but a pioneer for this new direction of superheroes.

Rejecting their methods, he returns to Gotham and embarks on a one-man war against crime.

The Nolan who made Memento and Insomnia is at home with extreme psychological states - this might complete a Three Colours Of Neurosis trilogy by following memory loss and sleeplessness with phobia. It's certainly a smart move to cast the former Patrick Bateman as a Batman who always seems about to crack up. Bale even makes the old playboy-idiot act work, suggesting - as Michael Caine's dry Alfred notes - a man who needs to pretend to have fun because he might accidentally enjoy himself.

With a city that looks less fantastical than Burton's, Nolan hits the streets and slums of Gotham to show a horrific escalation of evil that demands Batman's presence even as Gordon suggests he might make it worse; old-fashioned Mob guys (Tom Wilkinson) are edged out by masked freaks (Cillian Murphy, starily creepy even before he pulls on his Scarecrow hood) and a fanatical force run by the bastard sons of Fu Manchu and Osama bin Laden. Unlike Burton, Nolan doesn't skimp on action either, with brutal fights, vehicle chases and, in one great sequence, a mass escape from Arkham Asylum of serial killers and maniacs doped up with the Scarecrow's fear serum.

Significantly grittier than previous Bat-beginnings, this finds new things to do with, and say about, a character who's been around since 1938. In a year when the franchise watchword is "dark", this delivers the full noir with a side order of dementia.
