This is a more subtle film than the rest of Edgar Wright's films but in my opinion it's his greatest accomplishment yet. The cast bounce off each other magnificently and Elgort is a surprisingly compelling lead. The action is exhilarating thanks to the fact that it's all actually real and not just CGI and the music that accompanies the film adds so much flavour to scenes and those sequences become really vivid when you listen back to the soundtrack. Amazing, breathtaking journey. Expand

Story is downright dull as the plot is one big one big chase scene albeit set to music. In my opinion, there's absolutely no chemistry between the main two characters and the two main characters are stiff and boring to watch. Chase scenes are not original or unique - been there. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I can already tell that Baby Driver is going to be one of my favorite films of the year. I could feel this movie is special right from the start. Every actor plays their character well, and every character is well written and interesting.
Unlike other movies with cool rock n' roll soundtracks, where the songs are simply there and they sound cool, this movie is edited around each song. I held my breath through the first scene as I was blown away by the insane car chase and amazing editing. Every scene is cut to move with whatever song Baby is listening to, and every song fits the tone and pacing of the scene. Because of the editing and soundtrack, this movie is very stylized and fun to look at.
Baby Driver is not all style, though. Every character is well written and well directed. I found each criminal Baby had to work with interesting. They obviously had history and interesting back stories, but the movie did not slow itself down with needless exposition. In fact, very little is known about each criminal, but they are all unique and fun to watch. There is obviously chemistry between the actors, and this makes the comedy and drama land really well.

However, there were some scenes that were not perfect. The first is when Baby and company must visit "The Butcher," who is their arms dealer. The guy talks about his weapons like they are cuts of meat, calling one gun bacon, another prime rib, etc. This threw me out of the movie since it seemed unrealistic and strange to me. John Wick 2 had a similar scene, which was equally confusing. While to someone who is not accustomed to firearms this dialogue might sound cool, to me it doesn't make sense why a seasoned criminal would not just call a gun by its name. Similarly, why would John Wick ask for something more "robust," when he could just ask for a 12 gauge shotgun, or an AK, or whatever he wants. I had similar thoughts during Baby Driver's arms dealer scene. Fortunately this was a short part of the movie, so it didn't really effect my rating too much.
One more thing that bugged me is that Baby's girlfriend decides to join Baby after discovering that he is a criminal. She never really questions him. Realistically, if I had been with a guy for a week, and then found out he was a wanted criminal being chased by the law and several angry bank robbers, I would get as far away from him as possible. I think this is my biggest gripe concerning the movie, but it is still such a small part of the movie that it doesn't effect my score by much.

Overall this is an amazing film. I don't want to give away too much, so I will leave this review here. I give it a 95%. It had a few flaws, but honestly I couldn't think of anything I didn't like about the movie when I was coming out of the theatre. I really had to let it seep for a few hours before I could think of the flaws. I would definitely recommend seeing this over any other new releases. Instead of wasting your ticket on Transformers, go see Baby Driver.

Baby driver is by far the worst movie of the year, Edgar wright is a terrible director, creating three awful comedies and one terrible comic book movie, Edgar is an objectivily bad director and I will convince you why.

The story was awful, there is way too much energy and style put into this film, they also made that weird choice of putting the action in rythme with the music which made the action scenes compelling which I didn't appreciate. The soundtrack was awful, instead of putting random music that has nothing to do with the film (like suicide squad), here they decided to put a soundtrack that actually complements the film, this requires little to no effort and I'm ashamed that we as a human race accept this kind of filmaking.

The characters and actors were so bad that it made me cringe, they took cliched characters and actually made them likable and interesting, they actually made me feel invested in what was going on, I don't want that in a movie, earlier this year Transformers 5 showed awful characters and it made the movie so much better.

Stay away from this film, the story and characters were too interesting and the action and soundtrack was too unique and fun, it's one of the worst action films I've ever seen.

I was pumped to see this movie, but it worried me that I walked into the theater with such high expectations of it, especially after I got to see the high praise it was receiving. This is usually a setup for disappointment, but boy did it deliver.

The one-r toward the beginning was especially well directed. Wright's timing from his earlier comedies still shows throughout the film, adding to both the comedy and the intensity of the action throughout. Sound was well handled in the film, with Wright taking advantage of the standard surround sound and playing soundtrack and environmental elements as if the viewer shares the same ears as the main character. Toward the end, there's a moment when the audience is violently reminded they share the same ears as Baby, so the next couple scenes are more immersive than normal. Wright has a number of call-backs to his earlier films, notably a comedic story technique used at the beginning of Shaun of the Dead and a couple spoofs of Michael Bay shots he'd previously used in Hot Fuzz.
Timing was everything in this movie and that every scene had its own unique beat was interesting. This movie did blatant soundtrack usage correctly, which is rare today.
The color grading of the film is different depending on the tone of each scene and who's in it, which is pretty refreshing. There's a specific character who, whenever they're on screen alone with Baby, the color grading goes to the same one used in Baby's flashbacks but without a filter over it, which was strong visual story telling. This carried over into how ideas are established throughout the film, especially toward the climax, where there's a scene where a minor character's dialogue and letters on a box tell a story, one of the characters tells the story they got from those elements, and finally another character subverts audience expectations based on that story.
The story itself follows a familiar path, but it follows it due to the personality traits of each character and the conflicts which arise between them. Spacey and James' characters represent character motivations and pressures for Baby which parallel his parents (not a spoiler), Jon Hamm's character is a perfect counterpart and foil to Baby which pushes him to make choices which reveal what he cares about most, his caretaker is a catalyst for change in his character and his realization of his true character motivations, and Foxx's character is a lesser foil which forces Baby into the situation which will eventually require him to make the choices he makes in the face of Jon Hamm's character.
The film has a somewhat typical but tight and well written plot, impressive stage direction (especially on the one-r), imaginative and immersive use of sound, characters who matter and the four most important of these characters undergo believable character arcs (the others are used to facilitate these arcs or give evidence of each characters true nature), and the editing is the best I've seen in a long time. Some of the driving in the film can get confusing on some of the faster paced chase scenes, but all of the driving sequences are exciting at the least and the film isn't actually about driving so much as it is about someone who, by happenstance, is forced into the position of driving. Every chase scene has some unique situation or stunt and the film feels much shorter than its 113 minute run time.
Probably the most solid action film I've seen in years and a great date movie if both of you are okay with violence in film.

This is one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard. That the movie's plot is inextricably tied to the music is its greatest virtue. The writer/director Edgar Wright made the "Three Flavors Cornetto" film trilogy of Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World's End, the first two of which I really liked. He also made the truly underrated and under-appreciated Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, which was also tied to its music. Baby Driver is very kinetic and energetic. The driving is fantastic. Aaron Elgort will most likely become more known for this film than his previous memorable performance in The Fault in Our Stars. His character here is not that developed, but he's interesting. We find out the things that happened in his life to bring him to this unique situation, without finding out anything about how he learned to drive - which seems to be his greatest gift. This is a crime/heist drama mashed up with a romance and a long form music video. There are plenty of good bad guys: Kevin Spacey is perfectly believable as the head baddy, as are most of the others. Some are a little too over the top. But this movie is not about subtlety or nuance. You have sexy bad girl Darling (Eliza Gonzalez) and sexy love interest Debora (Lily James), apparently well orchestrated heists and wall to wall music. It is a fun ride. But the story gets a little too corny, rushed and completely unrealistic at the end. Not that any of it is realistic, which Baby Driver surely is not. But it is a fun ride. And did I mention that the soundtrack is awesome? Expand

I haven't. Here comes "Baby Driver", a very stylish musical-slash-action movie with a script that makes no sense at all. Even great actors like Kevin Spacey are flat and unconvincing. So, why does this movie have reviews so high? Frankly, I do not know. Good music, racy races (pun intended), a new style, as I already mentioned. But poor script full of cliches of all kinds, no interesting characters. On the other hand, there is something in the film that might make it a cult movie. So, you milage may vary.

True, it was a very long time ago, and he doesn’t seem to make the same movie twice, which usually is a compliment, but not here. Baby Driver is a very long (much too long) music video with not very interesting car chases – has no one in Britain ever seen Bullitt? Nicely shot, but no heart, no real emotion, and definitely no conflict. It’s also silly and sentimental, which is odd for a crime film. After about 10 minutes (maybe 5), we all knew how this would turn out. I am tempted to repeat the old waste-of-time cliché – “Sadly, that’s 113 minutes I’ll never see again!” Expand

I was so looking forward to this, with Hot Fuzz and Shawn of the Dead being all-time favourites. I just turned it off after 45 minutes just astonished that something so annoying, so irritating, so bewilderingly, inexplicably effing *hopeless* could receive the combined rating it has. I am astonished at how bad this film is. A five minute car chase, which was OK I guess, just turns into this pathetic, empty dross. The lead character dances down the street like some 9 year-old in a McDonald's commercial, and then this 25y.o.-ish supposed adult calls himself "Baby", and expects everyone else to refer to him as "Baby" also.. Whole scenes play out with bonafide stars like Foxx and Spacey and they're just ...*nothing*, just these empty, bland conversations that don't make you give the slightest crap about what might happen next. And for the first 40 mins after the first chase, nothing does. The lead character is some sort of autist we're sposed to care about, yet you'll just be wondering how you got suckered into watching this sublimely incompetent, pointless mess. It's been 15 years since I've turned off a movie before the end, and I am pretty much effing angry that this pile of putrid nonsense cost me 40 mins of my life. Edgar Wright, you should be ashamed of yourself. The sycophantic reviewers tricking people into watching this garbage are lower than whale crap. Never again. Expand

Now, you can cool action star to that list. He plays a getaway driver extraordinaire, who listens to music while he performs amazing getaways and impressive stunts. The crooks he works with (including Kevin Spacey, Jamie Foxx & Jon Hamm) add all sorts of conflicts. Then there's his love at first site (a lovely and charming Lily James). While the crooks gets to chew on the scenery, it's Elgort's sweet style that holds it all together. What really makes the movie such a winner is Edgar White, who's written a sharp, engrossing vehicle (pun intended) and infused it with outstanding stunts, clever directorial touches and a killer soundtrack. It's popcorn fun from the impressive opening chase to appropriate ending. The most fun of the summer, so far. Expand

The acting was spot on and the pacing was great going between action to romance with little bits of comedy interspersed. Every joke that Baby Driver tried to make landed well and it was one of those few times a movie could claim that it had "action that kept you on the edge of your seat." However, the most impressive thing about Baby Driver was it's incorporation of music with the scenes. Baby, the lead character, is constantly listening to music due to tinnitus he developed as a child and the movie really puts you in his perspective by syncing everything with the tracts his listening too and at times of turmoil allowing you to hear the ringing in his ears. Only negative I can give is that the majority of the (small) twists were not particularly surprising. Expand

Baby is a young man being held hostage to Kevin Spacey based hpon something that happened in the past. Spacey has a rotating crew of thieves and Baby is the indentured getaway driver. The heists include banks, armored cars and even the post office. Among the thieves are John Hamm and Jamie Foxx. They do not play nicely with each other. Baby mostly tries to keep his distance from all of them, keep quiet and do his job. He listens to music constantly with his ear buds forever in his ears. A precious accident when he was very young has left him with ringing in the ears. He puts music in his ears to drown out the ringing. He has a wonderful foster father who he is very protectove of and also meets the dazzling Debora when she waits on him at a local diner. She changes his goals and helps him focus on the future. We watch as the various thieves pull off their assigned jobs and Baby gets them away from the cops. There is a thing with Jon Hamm that is hard to swallow and I found myself saying, "Give me a break!". But, other than that, I thought this was a very engrossing movie. You really care about Baby and are rooting for him throughout the picture. The music is almost another character because we see Baby doing everything in time to the music buzzing in his head. Very interesting. Expand

Baby Driver is a fun, action-packed movie with amazing music and choreography. It doesn't necessarily bring anything new to the table, but what it already has on its plate is very enjoyable to watch.

Acting: Considering the only real acting role I'd seen Ansel Elgort in was his music video for his song "Thief", I wasn't sure if he was the right fit for this role. I just couldn't see the lovable lover from "The Fault in Our Stars" being a getaway driver. But he definitely proved that he can act, and is not bland or acts the same all the time. The rest of the acting is done very well, however Kevin Spacey was kind of bland and just behaved like a bored Frank Underwood from "House of Cards" since that seems like the only role he can get these days.

Characters: The characters are done perfectly fine; you can understand their motives easily, and they aren't too over-the-top for the most part. They do a great job presenting the moral dilemmas Baby faces, considering he's a good kid with a good heart who's now caught in debt with Kevin "Frank Underwood" Spacey. And like I said, Spacey's character is a bit bland and doesn't add much to the story; he just has to be in it because he's the boss.

Plot: Like I said, the plot isn't necessarily spectacular, nor is it supposed to be. The movie really focuses on the music and choreography, which I'll get into. Despite the plot not being anything mind-blowing, it doesn't have to be. If a movie allows the plot to take a backseat overall and still be a good movie, it's a great movie, for the most part. This movie doesn't rely on its plot to drive the audience, but rather the well-choreographed action sequences and music. This movie is also not very predictable, adding to the suspense. There are countless scenes where I have absolutely no idea what could happen, and while it's not necessarily "edge-of-your-seat" suspense, it's still intense and exciting to watch.

Action: The opening chase scene is done nearly perfectly. It's the complete opposite of the car chase in the movie "Bullitt". Instead of complete silence, music is blaring, and the chase is synced along with the music. It was edited and shot perfectly. Another great thing about the action scenes in this movie is that it doesn't rely on shaky-cam. You can pretty much always tell what is going on on-screen during the chase scenes. It also had to be edited perfectly so it would sync with the music. I can't help but appreciate all the work put into clearing the music for use, incorporating it into the script, choreographing it, and then filming it, and resulting in a really fun movie. That's all this movie is supposed to be. A fun, wild ride of a movie with added suspense so you don't get bored, and plenty of good action. It doesn't boast a good plot or even too many memorable characters, but I absolutely loved pretty much every minute just because it was so fun to watch.

Overall, Baby Driver is a great summer movie to watch with friends and have a good time. I can't imagine how hard it was to put all this together, and I applaud Edgar Wright for putting it together so perfectly. If this movie didn't have the choreographed music, it wouldn't be the same. Of course, then the movie may try to compensate for the lack of fun in the action scenes, and expand on the plot, which may or may not have worked, but I loved the movie just the way it was. It gets a 9 and not a 10 simply because it doesn't really introduce anything new besides the action and music.

In the blink of an eye, this action/musical turns into a dramatic heist film which keeps locking the viewer's eyes to the screen, caring for the characters and cheering for the extremely well coreographed action sequences. The soundtrack for this visually striking film excels in every level, you could be hearing a song in the middle of a shootout scene and the lyrics and beat of the song line up with the events on screen, that is truly a sight and sound to behold.
Baby Driver is without a doubt use of the best action films i've seen this year and one of Mr. Wright's best films. Go see it, I know you'll love the songs, scenes, and bullets that fly across your face every time another excellent action scene happens.

Baby Driver, an action film about a man named Baby (Ansel Elgort) who is a getawayAfter releasing a film every three years since 2004, director Edgar Wright's latest effort comes after a four-year gap due to his flirtations with Ant-Man. Baby Driver, an action film about a man named Baby (Ansel Elgort) who is a getaway driver, is perhaps Wright's most commercially appealing film. With the box office to match and the film shaping up to a box office surprise to many this summer, it seems as though Wright has finally found some mainstream acceptance, at least in America. As with many directors who finally escape niche audiences and finally find themselves receiving applauds from the general public (without having to resort to their work being a "cult classic"), Wright has unfortunately compromised some of the frenetic fun of his early work. Though Baby Driver is nonetheless a quirky, funny, and often times surreal film, it winds up feeling wholly underwhelming with Wright ditching what made his earlier films work so well: characters.

Though Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuzz were both action comedies, they nonetheless had great central characters. The supporting cast got the same treatment in those action films and this was especially true in his other works, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and The World's End. Unfortunately, this latest work gives very little for any character. Baby, a music-loving kid with tinnitus and who is in love with Debora (Lily James), is given very little depth even as the star. Beyond having a black foster dad and dead parents, it is hard to imagine what was supposed to be learned about the kid. He does not really grow and is never really given room to explore any bit of him beyond brief flashbacks to the car crash that gave him tinnitus and killed his parents along with a cassette tape that has a recording of his mom (Sky Ferreira) singing. Too often, Wright seems to rely upon old school musical classics as a shortcut to actually write dialogue between characters or characters' backstories. It is often excusable when the supporting cast is lightly developed or if a film fails to develop many characters beyond narrative cliches when there is not a single protagonist. Unfortunately, beyond being a good kid with a bad past that has led to him being bound to crime boss Doc (Kevin Spacey) as a getaway driver, Baby gets no depth or nuance. As a result, it is easy to just roll your eyes with how pale he winds up being written.

This same problem is found with the entirety of the supporting cast. His girlfriend, Debora, is shown as being nothing more than idyllic yes man who does whatever Baby tells her to do. Leave work now? Sure. Travel the country right now with a guy you barely know? Sure. Let this guy just follow you home? Of course. She has no ideas of her own. No volition and, crucially, no motivation. Wright, likely, keeps it this way to make it easier to turn her into a stone cold badass at the end with her taking on Buddy (Jon Hamm) and trying to outrun the cops. Neither are convincing moments with how she is set up as nothing more than a young girl trying to make a living at a dead end job. Wright treats her as arm candy, lets her have a moment towards the end, and then reassures the audience she is nothing more than a dream girl from a song and relegates her to being nothing more than cute for trying to save Baby, but let's let the men handle this one, eh? For Doc, he suffers from the same issue, but in reverse. Though he does seem to always like Baby, his turn from a hard-nosed criminal who will never let go of Baby to a soft and sentimental man who sacrifices himself to save his beloved driver is borderline comical. The film may be an action-comedy, but its absurd and ludicrous suggestion that Debora could go from quiet waitress to being Bonnie and Doc could go from being a true monster to being Sulley from Monsters Inc. carries no water. These two, despite their vital importance to the plot, are woefully underwritten. For bank robbers Buddy, Darling (Eiza Gonzalez), and Bats (Jamie Foxx), they are similarly underwritten. All of them are crazy and impulsive with no depth for any of the trio ever being considered. They are just nuts and cannot be trusted. With them all being treated as villains of Baby by the end, this cast of underwritten villains makes it apparent why Wright wanted to work with Marvel: his lack of knowledge of how to write a capable villain would be welcomed, instead of questioned. The only saving grace with the villain is a good motivation for why they become the villain, but it comes off of the back of too little development until then to really make it click.

The short review: A film that is synced to the song that's playing at the time. It's very loud, violent and smart, but it slightly loses its way towards the end when the characters need to face up to their bad deeds.
> Related media: It's an original story with no related media.
> What's it like?: Baby is an expert getaway driver of several robbers hired and led by a character played by Kevin Spacey. Due to tinitus, Baby listens to songs all the time and he sync his actions around each song. Baby is only interested in paying off his debt to 'Spacey' and then quitting. He is not interested in the robbery nor the money, but 'Spacey' would not let him quit. He threatens the people that Baby loves to force him to continue. It all comes down to the last job, where things do not go according to plan.
> Pros:
> 1) The concept of syncing the action to the song played at the time is fresh and interesting. >
2) The film is smart in many ways. For example, the characters all use pseudonyms to hide their real identities. Their real names were later revealed in due time and in interesting ways that brings up their backgound, hence character development. Other examples include the escape plan and its execution, and what happens when things don't go according to plan.
>
Cons:
>
1) The volume is rather loud.
>
2) Unfortunately, I am not familiar with many of the songs used, nor were the song right-away likable, unlike those in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 1.
>
3) There's a lot of violence in this film.
>
4) Towards the end, certain events become slightly harder for me to accept as they did not felt reasonable. They are spoilers, so I can't be specific here. > How would the the different age groups rate it?
Children: (not rated for children)
Teens: Good
Young adults: Excellent
Medium age adults: Good
Old adults: Good
> Rating: 4/5 (no half scores). It's worth to see it in the cinema.

Baby (Ansel Elgort) is a young talented getaway driver for criminal mastermind (Kevin Spacey) who values his role in meticulously planned robberies.

I have always felt that people shouldn’t be OK with mediocre or **** screenplays in action movies just because we’re talking about „just action movies“ or „just entertainment“.
I can’t enjoy bad writing or lots of tired cliches in any genre, and luckily once in a while I do come across a good action movie which has, among other good things, a quality storytelling.
„Baby Driver“ is one of those – easily one of the best action movie of the summer, of the year and recent times.
I love almost everything about it, although I think it would benefit from a more compact final act which turns out to be a overlong series of chases, some by car, some by foot.
The main man behind all that goodness is Edgar Wright, director and a sole screenwriter. Yeah, I had to look his name up from IMDb, too.
Wright has already given birth to some modern classics already, namely cult action comedies „Shaun of the Dead“ and „Hot Fuzz“ (paving way to the stardom of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost) and „Scott Pilgrim vs. the World“ (one of the most constantly entertaining comic-based movies ever). And „Baby Driver“ may well be his best, most fully realized work yet.
One would think that a story based on driving cars fast can't give us anything fresh, but „Baby Driver“ actually manages to breath a lot of new life into this.
According to the makers, tricks and chases do not rely on computer effects, and the result is one memorable adrenaline-pumping mayhem indeed.
But there’s much more to it than fast cars. The movie is above average in every aspect I can think of – character-building, storytelling, creating suspense, making the actors look cool (an important thing for any action movie!).
The visual side is a constant source of pleasure as well, it’s carefully and masterfully orchestrated, down to details and including the inventive use of pop music which turns out to be quite an important part of the whole result.
All that seems to have inspired actors too whose work is memorable all-around. Wright seems to have almost Tarantino-like talent to make actors cool, or formerly quite cool actors interesting again. Case in point: Jamie Foxx and Jon Hamm in „Baby Driver“.
The central weight of the story still lies on one character, Baby. And this turns out to be one of the rare instances in action movies where giving a lot of backstory to central hero pays off totally and doesn’t bore at all.
Any of the ten million generic superhero movies made in past, present and future should learn from that. (BTW, Wright has co-written "Ant-Man" and Spielberg's "Tintin".)
Ansel Elgort has previously starred as Caleb in „Divergent“ series, which is some YA crap or other. He was also in „The Fault in Our Stars“ (also YA, but not crappy) and Jason Reitman’s forgettable „Men, Women & Children“. But „Baby Driver“ could be his true ticket to wider fame, and this young man is likable enough to deserve it.
The only thing a bit unattractive about „Baby Driver“ is its title, although you will understand and like it more once you have started watching.
It’s the best 112 minutes I’ve spent watching action movie in a long time. Give it a chance. It kicks ass.

You'd be hard pressed to find someone who couldn't appreciate at least one of the movie's elements, and I personally appreciate just about all of them. With five incredible films under his belt, Wright has cemented himself as one of my favorite directors. Expand

The film is about a young getaway driver named Baby (Ansel Elgort) who has been associated with a crime boss for most of his life and begins to partake in a series of heists which in exchange will provide him with the life that he wants.

Edgar Wright is without a doubt one of the most unique filmmakers working today and what makes each of his films clearly stand out from one another is how he incorporates style into each of his films, and I don't think there's ever been a case in any of his films where he has preferred style over substance. He uses the style aspect of the film to his advantage and essentially the style ends up creating the substance in his films, and this film is a prime example of that.

An interesting supplement to the film was the music which was evidently going to be frequently present as made clear by the marketing, however I was very impressed with how the music was integrated with the filmmaking itself; I very much appreciated the fact that it wasn't simply just there to make certain scenes/sequences more fun and entertaining or just to make more profits off of a soundtrack, and instead it was used to help develop multiple things about the film from the characters to the world that the film takes place in.

One of the big highlights of the film is of course the car chases which are easily among some of the best I've ever seen in a film to date. Not only were they excellently shot (no shaky cam), choreographed and also edited, the stylistic parts of the film really helped add the adrenaline to each sequence; from the very first scene, the build-up of music adds an unbelievable amount of tension and excitement all at once and when the chase finally begins you are immediately on the edge of your seat.

The performances are great all-around; Ansel Elgort does a great job as the main character of Baby and while he does have a quiet persona, it avoids turning him into a bland, lifeless character and instead the music and style of the film helps us relate to him with his inner passion and understand his character. Another notable performance is Jon Hamm in a great performance as quite a challenging character.

I know that I've mentioned the music and style multiple times but it is easily the most surprisingly important element of the entire film as it not only provides an entertaining backtrack to multiple sequences, it also helps realise plenty of the characters, Baby in particular; as I stated earlier his character doesn't speak much but we're able to learn so much about him as the music appears as some sort of demonstration of his personality and we learn everything we need to about the characters without the need for exposition to explain them. In conclusion, the style creates the substance.

The film retains an incredible pace throughout (a notable element in all Edgar Wright films) and also has a great deal of humour too, also in multiple places it goes in directions that you may not expect and cleverly avoids the clichés which makes for an even more thrilling ride.

Overall, Baby Driver was a constantly thrilling, excellently paced, expertly crafted film that uses the style to its advantage which creates a very unique film which will undoubtedly become a classic in later years. I highly recommend it.

WOW! From what I've seen, this is Edgar Wright's best film yet. The action scenes, the car chases and the comedy are what make this film bloody amazing. All the characters in this film were needed to make the story expect Griff (Jon Bernthal). It wasn't full on comedy like all the films in the 3 flavors Cornetto trilogy which I was expecting because the trailers weren't that funny, and were not supposed to be. The film just has jokes sprinkled throughout the film which I liked. Overall, one of the best films I've seen and if you love Edgar Wright, you obviously have to see this film. Can't wait for that Blu-Ray!

LAST WARNING! SPOILERS AHEAD!

WTF JUST HAPPENED. As soon as Bats died, this film was extremely **** up. They were great surprises that made sense, unlike Hot Fuzz which was really silly and couldn't take seriously. Debora (Lily James) was a pretty dumb character. When Baby shot Buddy, she just goes with him without any concerns whatsoever and just goes along with him. She instantly becomes a criminal starts hurting people. WHAT!? I like how Doc (Kevin Spacy) stayed on Baby's side no matter what. Showing a true Father and son bond. Although they're not related. He died a hero, trying to save him by trying to kill Buddy and then gets ran over. Then 10 mins later, he gets shot in the leg, falls off a ledge and **** dies. The fact that pretty much every character dies other then a few made really have to walk the film off.

Baby is a really likeable and interesting character, supported by the rest of the cast. The story is riveting, especially as the movie ramps up towards the final climax. The film primarily relies on practical effects and stunts making the car chases and gun fights more believable and satisfying to watch. The music, cinematography, and fast paced editing give the film a really unique style you cannot help but get into. The story also does a terrific job of balancing light and dark themes. Certain points in the movie have a lot of heart whereas others are not afraid to get violent. You get to see the contrast between different characters; some believe in making moral decisions whereas others only look out for themselves. This adds a really interesting dynamic between the main characters. Overall I loved Baby Driver, it was everything I was hoping it to be. This flick is not burdened by big budget CGI and it lets the action drive excitement through a refreshing love story. The remarkable soundtrack (including Egyptian reggae!) is tightly choreographed to the action scenes. Rhythmic gunshots and even lyrical graffiti add a sense of play that contrasts the deep menace and foreboding as the body count rises and mayhem ensues.

At its heart, the movie has a moral, even as the body count rises. Baby evades the police in downtown Atlanta not because they bumble, but because his skill and planning are exceptional. The camera captures the action sequences without causing confusion or overdoing the jump-cuts. The car stunts are exciting because of the context. By avoiding ramps and keeping all four wheels on the road, the high-speed chases become believable.

The flick tips its hat to the movies that inspired it, including Goldfinger and The Blues Brothers, among many others. One nit: the use of the word "retard" in the flick and in the soundtrack grinds at my modern sensibilities (which allow for gunplay, violence and murder among the characters).

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First and foremost, Baby Driver is a lot of fun. By now most people know that it's a series of music videos set to car chases turned into a feature length film which is a great idea and it's executed with aplomb.

The car chases are cool, nothing ground-breaking but they're visceral and real and again, fun. The music matches the scenes brilliantly for the most part. The opening chase set to Bellbottoms is perfect and so is Baby play-dancing down the street to the Harlem Shuffle. Sometimes the music feels a bit too on the nose. Would someone like Baby really only listen to music like this from the 60s and 70s, pretty obscure stuff? Just because his mom left him these iPods? He has no taste that he's formed on his own.

This feeling of affectation permeates a lot of this film. It's enjoyable enough that it doesn't matter that much but it does prevent the film from becoming more than its trappings. It can be a bit scatterbrained and meaningless. Not in a brilliant pure pulp kind of way either - make no mistake, this film like most of Wright's films, wants you to care about the characters and make a connection but it doesn't quite achieve that.

The story is pretty standard fare for a film like this. One last job, kid with a heart of gold mixed up with the wrong crowd, perfect girl waiting in the wings for him to get out. Ansel Elgort is alright. There's a lot being said that he isn't nearly charismatic enough for this role, and though I would agree, I also think that's part of his character - he's in over his head acting cool to stay sane.

The problem is that just enough of his backstory is filled in for the audience to feel that it isn't quite right. His parents died in a wreck, so he became a badass driver - presumably to overcome his fear of car accidents - then became a bad kid with a lot of emotional problems. Somewhere in here a deaf man adopts him (did Baby know sign language before this? why would he? is this even allowed?) and Baby gets involved with Doc against his will (though based on the fact that he was stealing at the time, you think this would be a win win?) and then sometime later he becomes a good kid again who can't look away from the violence he's helping create. It all has the feeling of plot set-up exposition and may have been better left unexplained.

Everyone in this is like a comic book character, it's built into their nicknames and their personalities but Bats is the one character grounded in reality and Jamie Foxx imbibes him with the kind of gravitas this movie needed more of - he's great enough that it feels special (that speech about Hamm being a wall street guy who ran away with his stripper is good enough to have thematic weight but not indulged enough for pulp) but there's not enough of his impact for it to hit all the way home. Bats won't let Baby escape into his music and forget about reality - but it could also just be that his character is plot to motivate Baby into finally making a change. Debra literally exists as a figment of Baby's imagination (at least she could be). A girl her age, with her temperament, would not be starting some dive diner waitress job with no boyfriend or outside life to speak of. All we know is that she has a mom she took care of, but then what? She's a plot cipher too involved for that to work as is. Dialogue between her and Baby has a crisp pulp feel to it but it doesn't quite work because the film can't quite decide if it should be taken seriously or not.

The ending is up for debate and I read some interviews with the cast that say it's only in Baby's head. This isn't that kind of bleak nihilistic movie so I took the ending at face value. And as for Baby's hearing it's impossible to tell what happened. It seemed like a big deal but fades out of mind almost instantly.

The way the action other small environmental cues are synced to the music is clever and adds a little stylish flair to standard car chases and shootouts. Despite the title, some of the best action sequences take place on foot. Unfortunately, things are quite as good during the scenes where adrenaline isn't in the bloodstream.

The plot is fine and pretty cute. The love story is kind of bland, but does serve it's purpose of giving us another reason to root for Baby. Along the way we run into some crazy characters, all played to perfection by the likes of Jamie Foxx and Jon Hamm. It's a very funny and at times bat-crap crazy movie. The laughs and surreal moments are nice. It's just that overall things feel pretty generic.

Baby Driver has the action and a unique sense of style. The musical side is surprisingly perfect and it features Edgar Wright's fun brand of comedy. Ultimately though, it is held back from greatness by a lack of originality on the base level and the fact that I never actually cared about much that was going on outside of the action and chase scenes. What I mean is that I never connected with Baby as a character and that kind of sucks. Still, Wright shows that a new coat of paint might be all you need to spice up your ride for a little bit. Sure it won't make the age or kinks go away, but at least it's now just different enough to inject some new excitement into the trip.

I missed the rigid assembly and quick cuts, and dynamic close-ups on the details. Of course, everything was but to a lesser extent, and this distinctive mark was blurred in the whole movie in which the camera focuses on familiar faces. A good script, three acts and each part was clear, understandable, and sensible. This good movie is an attempt to create production for everyone, but as we know it’s very hard to do it - Edgar almost did it. Expand

I've been a fan of Edger Wright for awhile, as every film he directs I will watch and support it the best I could. Edgers way of visual comedy and know when to switch tones is achievement of it's own. And I know a lot of film makers struggle with that or don't know how to pull it off. What Edger managed to pull off in "Baby Driver" should convince film studios or the average audience member, he's one of the most gifted directors alive right now. The stunt driving and the brilliant coordination with each scene, it's hard not to love it. This was he's passion project and it freaking shows.

Good thing I watched this on the last week it was playing at my cinema. Imagine me missing this.

The movie is literally driven by music. Because everything is edited to a beat of the music. The way the music tunes with the environment of the characters was both unique and different. Gunshots, car horns, or any action will sync up.

Besides having a story that's been done before and you having a sense of things you know is going to happen, but what stops it from being predictable is you never know how things are gonna play out. Almost like the main characters mindset.

All the acting was pretty superb and everyone added something to their characters. With Jon Hamm being the stand out for me. Even well known actors who didn't do much still shine on their own. Like Kevin Spacey dose he's usual thing and there's nothing wrong with that, as it was suitable for that character.

Overall Rating: "Baby Driver" is extremely thrilling, funny, and a total blast to watch. Stylist with it's colors and music choices. The best mix of all film genres and you have no idea how refreshing to see something like this.

Bullets going along with the beat of the music was beautiful.

Baby Driver is a gigantic high-octane,action-packed car chase sequence, but with the right tones and some minor issues. The story may be 'squeezed out' sometimes, but at least it manages to squeeze itself in the right diection, with delightful action sequences and a killer soundtrack. Also, during the action sequences,i didn't expect some Tarantino-like level of violence in a movie like this. The jokes and puns are intelligent in every way, like,so much that i didn't even giggle or chuckle one time. An issue i may have with the story is that sometimes it lacks in emotion (until the end),but again, you would expect it in a movie like this (unless you're talking about those heavily mixed Furious movies). The acting was there, but i wasn't that surprised. It's great, don't worry, but i expected something else. Every scene is made with practical cars (just like Dunkirk's Practical Effects) and i was intrigued enough to see the many possibilities they could do with such incredible set pieces. Also,i wanna mention how excellent the editing in this movie is. It manages to change between scenes in the right moment, especially in the action sequences. In the end,Baby Driver manages to be another Edgar Wright succes (well,at the same levels of The World's End) with stylish action, solid acting and an intriguing story that makes it the best car movie i've seen in a long time. With so many celebrations of violence killing it at the box office, why do we still wonder how these tragedies continue? EvenTexas, Las Vegas, Brussels, Sandy Hook, over 142 gun violence victims had no reason to go so soon, but it happened. With so many celebrations of violence killing it at the box office, why do we still wonder how these tragedies continue? Even for myself, the news coverage on a new shooting has become white noise to me, it no longer disturbs me in the appropriate manner. Many other young men love watching stylish massacres, yet supposedly join the public worry about gun violence. From my experience, you can learn a lot about someone based on their taste in movies, so Baby Driver’s wide popularity says a lot about the level of care most young men have about gun violence.

Sure enough, director and writer Edgar Wright (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Shaun of the Dead) attacks the law in his own fueled world void of any justifiable punishment.

First, I want to cover the lack of setting: instead of letting relevant social problems indicate that it takes place in Atlanta Georgia, the stickers on the cop cars alone indicate that. Honestly, if the location was changed to anywhere else in the world, the story remains the same. Rather than a believable city with different people to learn more about, a role-playing clean slate lets you easily imagine yourself in Baby’s position for the town you live in.

Although Edgar Wright, as he’s most famous for, still pulls it off with a modernized narrative style, this time popping in a fluent radio language. In the first scene, the main protagonist, known as Baby, rocks out to his music in a vibrant red car, his lips in sync to the lyrics, ready to drive some bank robbers away from their heist. The absence of real dialogue in the first two scenes puts you into Baby’s 24/7 mentality—he never takes off his earbuds, as he uses the beats of his tunes to fill in the beats of his new criminal lifestyle. So sure enough, the audio style cuts past Baby’s shades to meet him at eye level: the gun fires and windshield wipers match the music beats perfectly. To take you further into Baby’s mental state, you watch him mix his own tunes together while ignoring sudden flashbacks about his rough childhood. He barely even speaks to anybody, as his roommate speaks only in American Sign Language. It keeps you wondering: What goes on between his ears? Here‘s where Debora comes in, the cute waitress he at last opens himself up to in many sweet, informative conversations about music.

Film editors Jonathan Amos and Paul Machliss (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) use appropriate jump cuts alongside the exploitation of circle shapes packed with attitude to transition between scenes. Cinematographer Bill Pope (Clueless, The Matrix) keeps up the excitement with a single uninterrupted shot to show Baby’s strut down the street, which later turns into spinning the camera around the actors throughout their heated conversations. Once the camera acrobatics take a breather for some spicy dialogue, Wright keeps his visual metaphors in mind, like Baby looking at his reflection in self-doubt.

Then once the engine starts up again, each piece of stunt choreography hits you hard with its seamless special effects, turning into a wild third act revved high on octane. Edgar Wright really deserves better directing gigs under a greater studio, he’s sure got the talent!

However, the fantastic technical achievement pale in impact compared to its dreadful lack of redemption toward humanity. If you land outside the male millennial core audience, you may notice the negative stereotypes painted on every roadblock to Baby’s freedom. Alongside the White male supremacy, any named Blacks are either a terrorist or a cripple, nothing positive; in the same way, Asians and Mexicans are seen solely as terrorists. To make it more typical, this screenplay fails the Bechdel Test, giving the sole two significant female roles to gorgeous women who never even make eye contact.

Honestly, if you took away the stylish soundtrack and spicy editing, you got another hollow fantasy populated by shallow archetypes. Baby comes off here as a passive protagonist who expresses no personal fears about the gang members. The same goes to Debora, a submissive device thrown in to be a “get the girl” motivator, and the crime boss, an average pokerfaced motivator for the hero to improve. All else in Baby Driver matches the same sensical nature of Fast & Furious; just the villains run out of bullets when the plot demands it.

I’m sorry if this offends you, but Edgar Wright’s artistic strides in musical masturbation could benefit greater once he learns about the consequences of his work to live on in history, otherwise, his fans probably won’t live long enough for it to happen.

It masterfully incorporates music into the movie itself to the point where the line between cinematography and music are blurred. If the traditional role of a soundtrack is to participate in the movie, Baby Driver puts a twist on this and has the movie participate in the soundtrack. The two intermingle with such finesse and style that the movie feels the perfect harmony between sound and vision. The movie is also helped out by excellent cinematography. There are plenty of single-shot sequences that make the movie feel more real and organic. But the movie also reaches points where it feels oddly ethereal, especially for an action movie. Indeed, for being an action movie, and for containing a great deal of action sequences, Baby Driver doesn't ever feel rushed. Edgar Wright has a way of making seemingly innocent enough events always feel like they are culminating into a wicked, hectic grand finale. It's his trade mark. Baby Driver is no different, and so for all the guns and fast cars, Baby Driver never feels like a flat plain like most other action movies. It feels like its ever going higher and higher, the pressure rising with it. A final word for this movie that has to be said is one about the finesse of acting in this movie. There is an immense likeability to Baby. He is supremely acted and despite playing the 'good guy in a bad situation' role, he never comes off as prudish or over-done. The rest of the cast bring their respective characters to life and everything turns out feeling like a ripened fruit. The movie seriously pops. Expand

Baby driver is easily my favorite film of 2017, it has so much energy and style to it, it's so entertaining and fun and I loved every single moment of it.

The story itself wasn't anything special but the way it was told was so unique and fun, the story is a basic heist movie where a character called Baby is tired of being the driver of people who rob banks so he tries to get out of this horrile situation. What makes this movie incredible is that there are a lot of moments where the movie is in rythme with the soundtrack which makes the film so refreshing.

The characters were really entertaining and interesting, Baby is a really likable character, he doesn't talk a lot but the acting makes this character likable and you care about him and you want to see him live, the other characters (like Kevin Spacey, jamie foxx, John Hamm ect...) all gave a great performances and they were all fun.
There is one character I didn't really care about, it's the love interest, she wasn't bad but she wasn't as good as the other characters, fortunatly the movie isn't focused on her so it's not a big problem.

The action was fantastic, it has so much style and energy, it's never boring because of all the rythme behind it, there is barely any CGI which I can appreciate, I'm not a fan of car chases but this film made car chases so fun.

This film is a masterpiece, the characters were entertaining, the story was told in a unique and fun way and the soundtrack was amazing, it's the best movie I saw in the last two years and I can't wait to see it again.

It takes the attention from viewer at the beginning to end while giving the big amount of perfectly fitting music. Action is really compelling, plot is smart, easy to follow and it encourages to care about our protagonist, Baby. It's not hard to predict what will happen in the first 30 minutes of watching but in second part of the film things are getting twisted, the whole crime/thriller mode is being activated with less amount of space for typical humour. The romance isn't the best and someone could say that it's the most flat and simplified part but for me relation between Baby and his "just-met love from the first sight" Debora came out quite natural and suitable to the rest of the movie.
Casting was perfect. Jamie Foxx as gangsta/psycho is extremely believable, Kevin Spacey is very minimalist but his performance is so charismatic and gentle that he need only one statement to give unforgettable expression/scene. The rest of the cast act also with no big flaws. Too bad Jon Bernthal was there only for a short time.
Talking about weak parts of Baby Driver is like talking about consequences of eating pizza - it's not worth its time. In the end we have some much fun with product which doesn't consider viewers as idiots (yes Baywatch, i'm looking at you). Although many things happen like in some fantasy (some elements of car chase, coincidences, romance part), it looks very realistic. We see character's motivations and how every situation escalates. Editing is on the highest level.
Also I can't believe how interesting was presented conversation in sign language between Baby and his step-father.

Edgar Wright is known for his over the top comedies (which I love also) so it's nice to see him try to jump into a lighthearted action movie. As usual, the cinematography is bloody glorious. Edgar Wright has established himself as not only amazing at visual comedy, but now more interesting visual story telling.
If it were not for the ending it might have been the best Edgar Wright movie, however, it forces an overly happy ending. There was a point about 20 minutes before the real ending that would have made a far more engaging, bittersweet ending. I feel like the writers were so transfixed on making the happiest possible ending that they completely forgot about the pacing and tone.
Never the less it is an amazing movie that can be summed up in short as a feature length COD gun sync

Criminally and severely underrated film. The intricacies of the sound design and editing are unmatched in recent years. Very clever writing with magnitudes of cinematic language.

The main character is an excellent protagonist. Throughout the movie you will become engaged in this well timed interaction between the real world and the music that the main character listens to. Everything is timed perfectly, up until the ending. The ending wasn't bad, but it is abrupt, if you see this movie you will know exactly what I mean. Definitely worth a watch. Expand

The movie itself was a good work of art. The fans expected nice content and Edgar Wright gave it to them. Ansel Elgort really stepped up his game. Definitely a movie worth watching again.

This is one of my favourite action movies. It's exciting from start to finish. Acting is on point, the music played is great, and I love the story theme. I can recommend this movie to everyone that likes intense action movies.

9/10 (Worth rewatching)

I went to watch Baby Driver having no expectations, or any idea what I was getting into as I went to see it with my family, and I was absolutely blown away. Baby Driver is a fantastic take on the action crime genre, as instead of the usual heist formulated movie, Edgar Wright has created a getaway focused show on the story of Baby, with music blended in seamlessly and immerses itself into the movie. The comedy that appears from time to time is executed and lands well, and the romance does not overstay its welcome or get in the way of the rest of the movie. I highly recommend this movie to my friends and family, as well as any fan of car based action movies as it offers a refreshing break from the usual fast and the furious movies.

Really enjoyed myself when watching this film, especially in the former part.
well although some of the plots doesn't make sense, yet after all it is not a very film focusing on logicality.

A very entertaining movie!

Fun, energetic, great music, densely packed with action and with great characters. The way the music is woven into the action is incredible and unique.
