Now, you can cool action star to that list. He plays a getaway driver extraordinaire, who listens to music while he performs amazing getaways and impressive stunts. The crooks he works with (including Kevin Spacey, Jamie Foxx & Jon Hamm) add all sorts of conflicts. Then there's his love at first site (a lovely and charming Lily James). While the crooks gets to chew on the scenery, it's Elgort's sweet style that holds it all together. What really makes the movie such a winner is Edgar White, who's written a sharp, engrossing vehicle (pun intended) and infused it with outstanding stunts, clever directorial touches and a killer soundtrack. It's popcorn fun from the impressive opening chase to appropriate ending. The most fun of the summer, so far. Expand

Baby Driver is one of the best movies of 2017 so far. It is action packed, funny, and has the best soundtrack since Guardians of the Galaxy. I highly recommend Baby Driver.

It is a total thrill ride. If you have a problem with gun violence, then you are one of the few people I would recommend stay away from this thing; otherwise, check it out. I give it an A - Make a point to go see this movie. Expand

Edgar Wright's return is a commercial homage to muscle car chase films from the 1970s and I'm buying everything. The cast, the soundtrack, the action and love story, all of it!

WOW! From what I've seen, this is Edgar Wright's best film yet. The action scenes, the car chases and the comedy are what make this film bloody amazing. All the characters in this film were needed to make the story expect Griff (Jon Bernthal). It wasn't full on comedy like all the films in the 3 flavors Cornetto trilogy which I was expecting because the trailers weren't that funny, and were not supposed to be. The film just has jokes sprinkled throughout the film which I liked. Overall, one of the best films I've seen and if you love Edgar Wright, you obviously have to see this film. Can't wait for that Blu-Ray!

LAST WARNING! SPOILERS AHEAD!

WTF JUST HAPPENED. As soon as Bats died, this film was extremely **** up. They were great surprises that made sense, unlike Hot Fuzz which was really silly and couldn't take seriously. Debora (Lily James) was a pretty dumb character. When Baby shot Buddy, she just goes with him without any concerns whatsoever and just goes along with him. She instantly becomes a criminal starts hurting people. WHAT!? I like how Doc (Kevin Spacy) stayed on Baby's side no matter what. Showing a true Father and son bond. Although they're not related. He died a hero, trying to save him by trying to kill Buddy and then gets ran over. Then 10 mins later, he gets shot in the leg, falls off a ledge and **** dies. The fact that pretty much every character dies other then a few made really have to walk the film off.

Everyone from Jamie Foxx, Lily James, Ansel Elgort, Joh Hamm and Kevin Spacey all give fantastic performances and all give there characters very different personalities. The races are thrilling, electric and very fast. I feel this movie will appeal to everyone and everyone should go see it in theaters. Another best picture nominee for me this year. This will become a classic 20 years from now. I feel like there have been many great films this year so far like The Lost City of Z, Wonder Woman and Get Out but none are on this level. This stands up there with La La Land with one of the best films of the last 10 years. Expand

I was pumped to see this movie, but it worried me that I walked into the theater with such high expectations of it, especially after I got to see the high praise it was receiving. This is usually a setup for disappointment, but boy did it deliver.

The way it uses the music is just so great. It's so different from all the other movies, but it isn't artsy in a way that only the critics will like it: this is a movie for everyone. I went with a friend who is really hard to please when it comes to movies, but I just knew he would love this. And I was right, I never saw him as excited about a movie as he was about this one. It's just so much fun to watch, but it's also serious when it needs to be and it has very intruiging characters. But I'll be honest, the core of the movie is its music. I think this is the second time I say it, but the music works so well. If I wasn't in the theaters I would sing with the songs. Even though it's completely different, it reminds me a bit of Fury Road in the way that it makes you want to punch your fist and the air and cheer during the movie. In reality I think it's more a mixture of La La Land and Grand Theft Auto (it's definitely not a musical btw). Go see this movie. I don't want to overhype anyone, but I'll make a bold statement and say this is my favorite Edgar Wright movie. I'll be shocked if this doesn't appear on many 'Best of the Year' lists in December, at least I already know it'll be on mine. Expand

While the characters are underdeveloped when you take away the Edgar Wright's sheek, especially the romance between Baby and Debora, everything is looked passed with just the tight, energetic editing and direction of Edgar Wright, fantastic performances with Ansel Egort as the lead, John Hamm and Jamie Foxx as robbers, and Kevin Spacy as the head hancho, high speed driving and chase sequences, and one of the best uses of pop music I have ever seen. And of course bonus points for Wright to mix the music in with the visuals with the editing and action taking place within the tunes. Also props to the sound design and production too. This movie has an amazing soundtrack and as someone who cannot sit still listening to music, either timing my movements or actions or tapping fingers along with the song I loved this movie. Because of that I was really able to relate to the character Baby. The jokes land well and the action is exciting, fresh and fun. This is a true masterpiece of film making, the way Wright hits beats in song to cuts in the edit or doors closing or the scenery is breathtakingly well done. The whole cast is terrific, Jon Hamm being a stand out. This is an exciting, fun, well made, summer movie and the sound/editing are Oscar worthy. Expand

Baby is a really likeable and interesting character, supported by the rest of the cast. The story is riveting, especially as the movie ramps up towards the final climax. The film primarily relies on practical effects and stunts making the car chases and gun fights more believable and satisfying to watch. The music, cinematography, and fast paced editing give the film a really unique style you cannot help but get into. The story also does a terrific job of balancing light and dark themes. Certain points in the movie have a lot of heart whereas others are not afraid to get violent. You get to see the contrast between different characters; some believe in making moral decisions whereas others only look out for themselves. This adds a really interesting dynamic between the main characters. Overall I loved Baby Driver, it was everything I was hoping it to be. Even if you do not feel as strongly about the movie as I do, it is still hard to be disappointed by this film. Expand

Baby driver is easily my favorite film of 2017, it has so much energy and style to it, it's so entertaining and fun and I loved every single moment of it.

The story itself wasn't anything special but the way it was told was so unique and fun, the story is a basic heist movie where a character called Baby is tired of being the driver of people who rob banks so he tries to get out of this horrile situation. What makes this movie incredible is that there are a lot of moments where the movie is in rythme with the soundtrack which makes the film so refreshing.

The characters were really entertaining and interesting, Baby is a really likable character, he doesn't talk a lot but the acting makes this character likable and you care about him and you want to see him live, the other characters (like Kevin Spacey, jamie foxx, John Hamm ect...) all gave a great performances and they were all fun.
There is one character I didn't really care about, it's the love interest, she wasn't bad but she wasn't as good as the other characters, fortunatly the movie isn't focused on her so it's not a big problem.

The action was fantastic, it has so much style and energy, it's never boring because of all the rythme behind it, there is barely any CGI which I can appreciate, I'm not a fan of car chases but this film made car chases so fun.

This film is a masterpiece, the characters were entertaining, the story was told in a unique and fun way and the soundtrack was amazing, it's the best movie I saw in the last two years and I can't wait to see it again.

This flick is not burdened by big budget CGI and it lets the action drive excitement through a refreshing love story. The remarkable soundtrack (including Egyptian reggae!) is tightly choreographed to the action scenes. Rhythmic gunshots and even lyrical graffiti add a sense of play that contrasts the deep menace and foreboding as the body count rises and mayhem ensues.

At its heart, the movie has a moral, even as the body count rises. Baby evades the police in downtown Atlanta not because they bumble, but because his skill and planning are exceptional. The camera captures the action sequences without causing confusion or overdoing the jump-cuts. The car stunts are exciting because of the context. By avoiding ramps and keeping all four wheels on the road, the high-speed chases become believable.

The flick tips its hat to the movies that inspired it, including Goldfinger and The Blues Brothers, among many others. One nit: the use of the word "retard" in the flick and in the soundtrack grinds at my modern sensibilities (which allow for gunplay, violence and murder among the characters).

The writing definitely isn't great and there are many rough edges to the plot (the relationship with Debora is obviously rushed, why the **** didn't Baby shoot Jon Hamm in the head - you would think it's because he doesn't want killing people on his conscience but he kills Jon Hamm later anyway). But the soundtrack is incredible, the direction is perfect and the transitions are always unique and interesting. The colors are perfect... the music syncs up with gunshots and camera cuts... an amazing movie that is probably only an 8 but it's ****ing awesome so I'm giving it a 10. Expand

Edgar Wright is very talented when you can see it by watching this movie. As usual, it contains a lot of music, the work on synchronization between audio and visual is INSANE, you can feel the rythm in every scene.

The acting was spot on and the pacing was great going between action to romance with little bits of comedy interspersed. Every joke that Baby Driver tried to make landed well and it was one of those few times a movie could claim that it had "action that kept you on the edge of your seat." However, the most impressive thing about Baby Driver was it's incorporation of music with the scenes. Baby, the lead character, is constantly listening to music due to tinnitus he developed as a child and the movie really puts you in his perspective by syncing everything with the tracts his listening too and at times of turmoil allowing you to hear the ringing in his ears. Only negative I can give is that the majority of the (small) twists were not particularly surprising. Expand

I've been a fan of Edger Wright for awhile, as every film he directs I will watch and support it the best I could. Edgers way of visual comedy and know when to switch tones is achievement of it's own. And I know a lot of film makers struggle with that or don't know how to pull it off. What Edger managed to pull off in "Baby Driver" should convince film studios or the average audience member, he's one of the most gifted directors alive right now. The stunt driving and the brilliant coordination with each scene, it's hard not to love it. This was he's passion project and it freaking shows.

Good thing I watched this on the last week it was playing at my cinema. Imagine me missing this.

The movie is literally driven by music. Because everything is edited to a beat of the music. The way the music tunes with the environment of the characters was both unique and different. Gunshots, car horns, or any action will sync up.

Besides having a story that's been done before and you having a sense of things you know is going to happen, but what stops it from being predictable is you never know how things are gonna play out. Almost like the main characters mindset.

All the acting was pretty superb and everyone added something to their characters. With Jon Hamm being the stand out for me. Even well known actors who didn't do much still shine on their own. Like Kevin Spacey dose he's usual thing and there's nothing wrong with that, as it was suitable for that character.

Overall Rating: "Baby Driver" is extremely thrilling, funny, and a total blast to watch. Stylist with it's colors and music choices. The best mix of all film genres and you have no idea how refreshing to see something like this.

Bullets going along with the beat of the music was beautiful.

What makes this movie so great is that it's filled with memorable characters, packed with action, a great love story, and even a few surprises and twists that catch you off-guard. Ansel Elgort plays the cool Baby, a young driver whose job is to drive a group of criminals so they can heist. He works under the intimidating Doc (Kevin Spacey) who is very demanding when it comes to Baby. We see that Baby lives a quiet life looking after his deaf companion, and whatever money he makes, he uses it to feed him, and make sure he's well looked after. Baby attends to a diner, and meets a pretty young waitress named Debora (Lily James), who also shares a love for music. They seem to really hit it off, and this becomes a thing for the two of them. However, things get complicated when a thug named Bats (Jamie Foxx), who doesn't like to waste time, he prefers to do the job, and get away just like that, no other questions asked. The movie is impressive and entertaining, and proves even further that Edgar Wright is one of the most underrated filmmakers working today. With films from; 'Shaun of the Dead' (2004), to 'The World's End' (2013), he has proven to be both original, and using some effective camerawork to craft his films. I really liked the romantic chemistry between Elgort and James, and at a time where many movies are filled with unnecessary and somewhat bland romantic subplots, theirs is honestly the best one I've seen since 'Deadpool' (2016). Hopefully, in the future, we get more films that are as expertly crafted and equally as fun as this. Probably the most fun movie in 2017. Expand

It masterfully incorporates music into the movie itself to the point where the line between cinematography and music are blurred. If the traditional role of a soundtrack is to participate in the movie, Baby Driver puts a twist on this and has the movie participate in the soundtrack. The two intermingle with such finesse and style that the movie feels the perfect harmony between sound and vision. The movie is also helped out by excellent cinematography. There are plenty of single-shot sequences that make the movie feel more real and organic. But the movie also reaches points where it feels oddly ethereal, especially for an action movie. Indeed, for being an action movie, and for containing a great deal of action sequences, Baby Driver doesn't ever feel rushed. Edgar Wright has a way of making seemingly innocent enough events always feel like they are culminating into a wicked, hectic grand finale. It's his trade mark. Baby Driver is no different, and so for all the guns and fast cars, Baby Driver never feels like a flat plain like most other action movies. It feels like its ever going higher and higher, the pressure rising with it. A final word for this movie that has to be said is one about the finesse of acting in this movie. There is an immense likeability to Baby. He is supremely acted and despite playing the 'good guy in a bad situation' role, he never comes off as prudish or over-done. The rest of the cast bring their respective characters to life and everything turns out feeling like a ripened fruit. The movie seriously pops. Expand

Baby Driver is a fun, action-packed movie with amazing music and choreography. It doesn't necessarily bring anything new to the table, but what it already has on its plate is very enjoyable to watch.

Acting: Considering the only real acting role I'd seen Ansel Elgort in was his music video for his song "Thief", I wasn't sure if he was the right fit for this role. I just couldn't see the lovable lover from "The Fault in Our Stars" being a getaway driver. But he definitely proved that he can act, and is not bland or acts the same all the time. The rest of the acting is done very well, however Kevin Spacey was kind of bland and just behaved like a bored Frank Underwood from "House of Cards" since that seems like the only role he can get these days.

Characters: The characters are done perfectly fine; you can understand their motives easily, and they aren't too over-the-top for the most part. They do a great job presenting the moral dilemmas Baby faces, considering he's a good kid with a good heart who's now caught in debt with Kevin "Frank Underwood" Spacey. And like I said, Spacey's character is a bit bland and doesn't add much to the story; he just has to be in it because he's the boss.

Plot: Like I said, the plot isn't necessarily spectacular, nor is it supposed to be. The movie really focuses on the music and choreography, which I'll get into. Despite the plot not being anything mind-blowing, it doesn't have to be. If a movie allows the plot to take a backseat overall and still be a good movie, it's a great movie, for the most part. This movie doesn't rely on its plot to drive the audience, but rather the well-choreographed action sequences and music. This movie is also not very predictable, adding to the suspense. There are countless scenes where I have absolutely no idea what could happen, and while it's not necessarily "edge-of-your-seat" suspense, it's still intense and exciting to watch.

Action: The opening chase scene is done nearly perfectly. It's the complete opposite of the car chase in the movie "Bullitt". Instead of complete silence, music is blaring, and the chase is synced along with the music. It was edited and shot perfectly. Another great thing about the action scenes in this movie is that it doesn't rely on shaky-cam. You can pretty much always tell what is going on on-screen during the chase scenes. It also had to be edited perfectly so it would sync with the music. I can't help but appreciate all the work put into clearing the music for use, incorporating it into the script, choreographing it, and then filming it, and resulting in a really fun movie. That's all this movie is supposed to be. A fun, wild ride of a movie with added suspense so you don't get bored, and plenty of good action. It doesn't boast a good plot or even too many memorable characters, but I absolutely loved pretty much every minute just because it was so fun to watch.

Overall, Baby Driver is a great summer movie to watch with friends and have a good time. I can't imagine how hard it was to put all this together, and I applaud Edgar Wright for putting it together so perfectly. If this movie didn't have the choreographed music, it wouldn't be the same. Of course, then the movie may try to compensate for the lack of fun in the action scenes, and expand on the plot, which may or may not have worked, but I loved the movie just the way it was. It gets a 9 and not a 10 simply because it doesn't really introduce anything new besides the action and music.

Personally this has been the best well rounded movie I have seen all year. The film was well shot, the sound editing was amazing, and the cast was fantastic. Ansel Elgort as “Baby” played a very likable but conflicted main protagonist. His performance supplemented by a great supporting cast (Eiza Gonzalez, Jamie Fox, John Ham, and Kevin Spacy). Worth mentioning, the movie had a very well-coordinated continuous shot, as well as amazing implantation of song and sound. Edgar Wright and Team were able to turn the movie into a best hits playlist without it becoming boring or stagnant. The way in which song was incorporated into each scene was unique and did not take away from the story. Baby in particular has more complicated motivations, and they are revealed in tidbits throughout the movie, but it never throws the movie off track and is actually a helpful insight into the mind of Baby. The action scenes are top-notch... I'll just leave it at that because that's the one part of the movie that no one should even be debating over. Baby's relationship with "a girl" was at first surprisingly realistic... but as things start to get more troubling for Baby, it's hard to believe how the relationship with the "girl" was effected (That's how spoiler-free I can go when it comes to talking about that.) All of the actor's performances in this movie are just enchanting... and just when you think a character is a really nice person, they end up being a bit of a **** ok, I'll stop talking about this before I get into something that'll really spoil the movie. Edgar Wright has truly outdone himself in what I consider one of the greatest comeback films ever. From a wide variety of interesting well developed characters, to a tasty platter of amazing songs that practically run the scenes, Baby Driver proves to be summers greatest hit thus far. In the first few moments of the film, Baby (Ansel Elgort) proves why he is Docs(Kevin Spacey) "lucky charm". I mean..... this kid can drive! But not just that, he is also incredibly smart which aids in their robbery escapes multiple times in the film. That's one of things I like about Baby Driver, or more specifically Edgar Wright. He clearly puts so much time and effort into each character; and never stops at the bare minimum. We can see this through the other thieves and misfits as well. I especially liked Jon Hamms character Buddy, I thought his personality was extremely complex up until his last line of dialogue. And don't even get me started on Kevin Spacey. This man proves why he is one of the best, if not the best actor of all time. The character of doc was so complex, especially with his relationship with Baby. In a weird way it sort of worked like a father son relationship, which Wright played out in the best way possible. I would also like to point out that in current times it's easy to loose the stakes in action sequences, however, because of the dynamics between the characters it keeps you on the edge of your seat. There is one scene in the Diner that was specifically clever, props to Jamie Foxx. Another great part of Baby Driver was it's music. I can't honestly think of a time when an amazing song wasn't playing. This film is actually run by the music! Which is incredibly clever, but also highly entertaining. I thought he played that part of Babys character so well into the scenes and dialogue with other characters. Every part of this movie moved to the sound of the beat, and I just love that attention to detail. It really makes each scene that much more enjoyable.

Finally, I thought the ending to the film was a very refreshing spin on a modern day criminal/hero. Baby Driver brought real life consequences to the decisions its characters make, and I couldn't agree more with that style of storytelling.

Some minor discrepancies would probably be the fact that Baby fell in love incredibly quickly. His love Deborah (Lily James) also seemed a little to willing to risk her life so early into a relationship. But I guess if it's love it's love.

Overall, If you are looking for an incredible thrill ride. Speed to Baby Driver right now, it truly is an incredibly well written/acted/edited thrill ride that always plays to the sound of the beat.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I can already tell that Baby Driver is going to be one of my favorite films of the year. I could feel this movie is special right from the start. Every actor plays their character well, and every character is well written and interesting.
Unlike other movies with cool rock n' roll soundtracks, where the songs are simply there and they sound cool, this movie is edited around each song. I held my breath through the first scene as I was blown away by the insane car chase and amazing editing. Every scene is cut to move with whatever song Baby is listening to, and every song fits the tone and pacing of the scene. Because of the editing and soundtrack, this movie is very stylized and fun to look at.
Baby Driver is not all style, though. Every character is well written and well directed. I found each criminal Baby had to work with interesting. They obviously had history and interesting back stories, but the movie did not slow itself down with needless exposition. In fact, very little is known about each criminal, but they are all unique and fun to watch. There is obviously chemistry between the actors, and this makes the comedy and drama land really well.

However, there were some scenes that were not perfect. The first is when Baby and company must visit "The Butcher," who is their arms dealer. The guy talks about his weapons like they are cuts of meat, calling one gun bacon, another prime rib, etc. This threw me out of the movie since it seemed unrealistic and strange to me. John Wick 2 had a similar scene, which was equally confusing. While to someone who is not accustomed to firearms this dialogue might sound cool, to me it doesn't make sense why a seasoned criminal would not just call a gun by its name. Similarly, why would John Wick ask for something more "robust," when he could just ask for a 12 gauge shotgun, or an AK, or whatever he wants. I had similar thoughts during Baby Driver's arms dealer scene. Fortunately this was a short part of the movie, so it didn't really effect my rating too much.
One more thing that bugged me is that Baby's girlfriend decides to join Baby after discovering that he is a criminal. She never really questions him. Realistically, if I had been with a guy for a week, and then found out he was a wanted criminal being chased by the law and several angry bank robbers, I would get as far away from him as possible. I think this is my biggest gripe concerning the movie, but it is still such a small part of the movie that it doesn't effect my score by much.

Overall this is an amazing film. I don't want to give away too much, so I will leave this review here. I give it a 95%. It had a few flaws, but honestly I couldn't think of anything I didn't like about the movie when I was coming out of the theatre. I really had to let it seep for a few hours before I could think of the flaws. I would definitely recommend seeing this over any other new releases. Instead of wasting your ticket on Transformers, go see Baby Driver.

The one-r toward the beginning was especially well directed. Wright's timing from his earlier comedies still shows throughout the film, adding to both the comedy and the intensity of the action throughout. Sound was well handled in the film, with Wright taking advantage of the standard surround sound and playing soundtrack and environmental elements as if the viewer shares the same ears as the main character. Toward the end, there's a moment when the audience is violently reminded they share the same ears as Baby, so the next couple scenes are more immersive than normal. Wright has a number of call-backs to his earlier films, notably a comedic story technique used at the beginning of Shaun of the Dead and a couple spoofs of Michael Bay shots he'd previously used in Hot Fuzz.
Timing was everything in this movie and that every scene had its own unique beat was interesting. This movie did blatant soundtrack usage correctly, which is rare today.
The color grading of the film is different depending on the tone of each scene and who's in it, which is pretty refreshing. There's a specific character who, whenever they're on screen alone with Baby, the color grading goes to the same one used in Baby's flashbacks but without a filter over it, which was strong visual story telling. This carried over into how ideas are established throughout the film, especially toward the climax, where there's a scene where a minor character's dialogue and letters on a box tell a story, one of the characters tells the story they got from those elements, and finally another character subverts audience expectations based on that story.
The story itself follows a familiar path, but it follows it due to the personality traits of each character and the conflicts which arise between them. Spacey and James' characters represent character motivations and pressures for Baby which parallel his parents (not a spoiler), Jon Hamm's character is a perfect counterpart and foil to Baby which pushes him to make choices which reveal what he cares about most, his caretaker is a catalyst for change in his character and his realization of his true character motivations, and Foxx's character is a lesser foil which forces Baby into the situation which will eventually require him to make the choices he makes in the face of Jon Hamm's character.
The film has a somewhat typical but tight and well written plot, impressive stage direction (especially on the one-r), imaginative and immersive use of sound, characters who matter and the four most important of these characters undergo believable character arcs (the others are used to facilitate these arcs or give evidence of each characters true nature), and the editing is the best I've seen in a long time. Some of the driving in the film can get confusing on some of the faster paced chase scenes, but all of the driving sequences are exciting at the least and the film isn't actually about driving so much as it is about someone who, by happenstance, is forced into the position of driving. Every chase scene has some unique situation or stunt and the film feels much shorter than its 113 minute run time.
Probably the most solid action film I've seen in years and a great date movie if both of you are okay with violence in film.

Just the coolest! Great music, great action and tons of laughs. Jamie Foxx and John Hamm might give the performances of their careers. Foxx is terrifying. Baby Driver is a great night out and probably best seen on a BIG screen.

9/10 (Worth rewatching)

I went to watch Baby Driver having no expectations, or any idea what I was getting into as I went to see it with my family, and I was absolutely blown away. Baby Driver is a fantastic take on the action crime genre, as instead of the usual heist formulated movie, Edgar Wright has created a getaway focused show on the story of Baby, with music blended in seamlessly and immerses itself into the movie. The comedy that appears from time to time is executed and lands well, and the romance does not overstay its welcome or get in the way of the rest of the movie. I highly recommend this movie to my friends and family, as well as any fan of car based action movies as it offers a refreshing break from the usual fast and the furious movies.

It’s certainly the feel you get upon watching the trailer. Just one more job, and he’s out. Of course, if you’ve seen any of Edgar Wright’s other movies, you know that he likes to take the genre and more or less parody it, while also creating something that fits right in. Be it a zombie movie filled with comedy, an action movie that completely unloads in the final act, or a heist film with a musical on a collection of iPods, you can always expect a fresh twist on a played out genre from Mr. Wright.

Baby Driver starts off in a manner that is very similar to Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive. You see Baby (Ansel Elgort) in the driver seat as the rest of the crew heads in to perform the robbery. He waits in the car listening to Bellbottoms by Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, singing along and playing the air instruments as they come about. The song, as is made more evident as the movie continues, is set to sync up with the action happening in Baby’s world. Have you ever been walking along as you are listening to a song, and notice that your tempo syncs up with the song? Perhaps you’re working out and a particular song fits just right with what you’re doing at the moment, giving you an added boost of energy. That’s how Baby lives, and if something isn’t right, he’ll rewind so it is.

Once the crew makes it back to the car, you’re treated to all the tricks Baby has up his driving sleeve, switching cars in a parking garage just in time for the title credits to appear. For a movie with a focus on driving, there didn’t seem to be a whole lot in the movie. But when there was, it was fast-paced and adrenaline pounding. Baby doesn’t speak much throughout the film, as he lets the music do the talking. And this is something that is constantly picked at by his crew that is always handpicked by Doc (Kevin Spacey), who we soon find Baby is paying off for something he previously did. The more prominent characters such as Buddy (Jon Hamm), Darling (Eiza González), and Bats (Jamie Foxx) have the most interaction with Baby in the heists. Buddy is the most likeable, being much more human to Baby than everyone else that comes into contact with him. It appears that everyone is leery of Baby and the fact that he doesn’t talk much, always wears sunglasses, and never takes his earbuds out. It’s made clear later on why he has such a fixation to music, as a previous event lead him to having tinnitus, a constant ringing in the ears. You know the sound – after leaving a concert when you were right by the amps and you can’t hear anyone unless you’re yelling at them, and you find yourself outside the building with a high pitched hum that won’t stop. Throughout the movie you’ll hear this when the music isn’t playing, and sometimes when it is, serving as a constant reminder of his past and his motives.

Baby has no intention of living the criminal life, and he wants anything but that once he meets his love interest, Debora (Lily James). Debora is a waitress at a diner that catches Baby’s attention from the moment he sees her, and he is willing to sweep her off her feet as soon as he can. She has dreams of just hitting the road with no plans, meaning they’re a match made in heaven, considering. Unfortunately, things aren’t so easy; they never are in crime. In addition to the love interest, Baby also takes care of his foster father who is disabled, sharing tender moments with him and seeing how supportive he’s been despite the life of crime. These sections of the movie humanize Baby, helping to show that while he’s a criminal, he’s one you should root for in the end.

Outside of the normal story telling you would expect from this type of film, the movie oozes with style. As previously mentioned, Baby loves his music. He has several iPods with different songs depending on his mood. Just like Wright does with Shaun of the Dead, each gun fight becomes the percussion to the songs played. The squealing of tires becomes the rhythm of a song. Without the soundtrack in place, the movie is a very different beast. Music has always been a vital part of Wright movies, as well as sound design in general. You’ll find audio transitions hear that he’s practically famous for, and visual cues that are so smart you likely won’t notice them.

If you’re a fan of heist films, car chases, and all around style, Baby Driver is likely for you. Starring a cast brimming with Hollywood klout, it’s nice to see Ansel be such a tour de force. While not my favorite directed film from Mr. Wright, it’s easy to see why it’s being so highly praised. Every story has been done before, and this film has all the tropes you’d expect from the genre. But sometimes it’s the tired ideas that work best when revitalized by the likes of a true artist.

Edgar Wright has become one of a handful of star directors in recent years.

Some filmmakers’ work demands attention simply because of their back catalogue. Quentin Tarantino, Christopher Nolan, Steven Spielberg; audiences will go out to see their films simply because of who directed them.

With Baby Driver, Edgar Wright has firmly cemented himself in the star directors category.

This is a film by film lovers, for film lovers, blending music, stunning visuals, action choreography and an outstanding ensemble cast to create a cinematic experience that is simultaneously a throwback and something completely new.

Ansel Elgort plays Baby a young getaway driver pressured into a life of high-speed heists by crime boss Doc (Kevin Spacey). In a seamless blend of character and film-making style, Wright creates the character of Baby with a unique affliction.

Suffering from tinnitus, Baby listens to music via a pair of (carefully product placed) apple earbuds to drown out a constant drone. Putting the audience firmly in Baby’s shoes, the director has curated an eclectic soundtrack that is blended throughout the film. At times Baby will mime, or walk/dance along with his chosen track, sometimes gunshots and action are synced with the beat of the film’s jukebox.

This style is something that takes a while to get used to and, while innovative, there are moments when the film comes dangerously close to becoming a music video rather than a straightforward narrative.

Just when it’s getting a bit much, Wright brings everything back to earth with some fantastic performances from the central cast. Ansel Elgort brings a delicate balance of ‘impossibly cool’ and real world vulnerability to Baby that manages to keep the character grounded despite his, at times superhuman, abilities.

At the heart of the film is Baby’s relationship with Debora (Lily James) a waitress at a local dinner. The pair share some great on-screen chemistry that reminds me of Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone in the Amazing Spider-Man films (by no means a bad thing). If this central (at times overly romanticised) pairing didn’t work, the whole film would fall flat. Lucky the two young leads, armed with some charming dialogue, are more than up to the task.

As his relationship with Debora grows, Baby’s life of crime catches up to him and it’s not long before things start getting tense, thanks mostly to Bats (Jamie Foxx), the obligatory ‘loose cannon’ of the crew.

I say obligatory, but Wrights’ ability to play with genre conventions and character archetypes should never be underestimated, things do not play out the way you think they would.

Every member of the ensemble does a great job of playing their roles perfectly without scene-stealing or grandstanding. Jamie Foxx, Jon Hamm and Kevin Spacey; each one of those names is a leading actor you could build a film around. Here though they bring added gravitas and intensity to the more dramatic scenes, leaving Wright to do what he does best.

The director has always had an eye for kinetic action. In Hot Fuzz, Scott Pilgrim and a standout scene in the underrated The World’s End, fight choreography and camera work go a long way to giving the director his signature style.

In Baby Driver though, Wright has a much bigger toy box to play with and it pays off spectacularly. These are some of the best car chase scenes you’ve seen in years, putting films like the Fast and Furious franchise to shame with pure, in-camera stunt work.

While the breathless pace of the films’ final act threatens to give the audience a bit of cinematic whiplash, the cast and director manage to give each character a satisfying arc, although not necessarily in the way you might expect.

Baby Driver is a love letter to car chase cinema and to heist movies (Wright has been very open about his influences even putting on a programme of his favourites at the BFI) but above all the film is a celebration of music. No matter what your personal taste, the soundtrack crosses musical boundaries and that is precisely the point.

In a summer full of reboots, crossovers and sequels, the action, musical, drama is a breath of fresh air and one no film fan should miss.

Upon seeing that Edgar Wright wasGoing into this film, despite the good reviews I’d heard, I expected it to be a relatively generic action movie. Perhaps something similar to the ‘Fast and Furious’ franchise, with an interesting soundtrack. Upon seeing that Edgar Wright was directing it, however, I knew that wouldn’t be the case. As the director of some of my favourite comedy films, I knew he would bring something special to the movie.

I wouldn’t actually consider this film a comedy. That isn’t to say it isn’t funny; it is. The comedy wasn’t invasive, and was never the sole purpose of a scene, unlike in many other big-budget movies this past year. Instead of derailing the plot, comedy is used effectively and sparingly, never showing up during tense moments. The film allows you to feel nervous when you’re supposed to, and laugh when out of harm’s way.

The action in this film is fantastic, though I feel the chases are really the highlight. The car chases are not only thrilling, but smart. While Baby (Ansel Elgort) drives, you can actually see him working out what to do next, and how to go about losing his pursuers. At one point, there is a foot chase, which is also rather brilliant. Again, you can see the character actively thinking as he moves, and there is some impressive action exhibited throughout. The gun-play is, in my opinion, the weakest of the action elements. With that said, it isn’t bad, simply without much originality or style. The characters act brashly, which is enjoyable, but I rarely felt tension when a gun was involved.

Ordinarily, I might ignore focusing on such an element, but as it’s integral to the plot, I shall briefly discuss the romance between Baby and Deborah (Lily James). As much as it pains me to say this, I feel it was probably one of the weakest elements. Much of it happens rather suddenly. For myself, however, it was saved by Elgort and James’s chemistry together; their conversations were rather sweet, despite Baby’s seeming difficulty to converse with the girl.

Following this trend, I’ll move on to the characters. While none of them are ever boring, they are all arguably one-note and rather simple. There’s rarely much depth to them. Adding the depth needed to make them perfect, however, may have led to the film dragging and becoming boring. As it stands, I never found myself checking my watch. With that said, I still enjoyed each and every one of them; the actors all did a fantastic job bringing them to life. Funny characters can go on to be intimidating, then back to comedic seamlessly, and vice-versa. Discussing the actors, however, brings up an unfortunately unavoidable controversy.

Kevin Spacey has recently been accused of many accounts of sexual misconduct. Regardless of whether or not these accusations are true, this may well ruin his portrayal in the film for you. If you are able to separate art from the artist, this shouldn’t be an issue. For those who feel these allegations are too serious, however, I shall let you know his character isn’t too prominent in the film. He also plays a sort of semi-antagonist throughout the earlier portions of the film. And if you hate his guts, *Spoilers until the next paragraph* you get to see him die towards the end, too! Rather brutally, at that.

Finally, I have to talk about the music. Like many films recently, Baby Driver makes use of an unconventional soundtrack. Many of the songs featured are classics from decades past, and much like Guardians of the Galaxy, there’s an actual reason for it. Edgar Wright even checked with James Gunn to be sure they wouldn’t use the same songs in the then-unreleased Guardians of the Galaxy 2! Unlike the aforementioned marvel movies, however, the music is more than a novelty. The entire film revolves around Baby’s music. Much of the action happens to the beat of songs, and many times the lyrics of a specific tune will match the scene in which it’s featured. It also features a wide variety of genres, including, but not limited to, Rock, Soul, Jazz and some classic Pop. Baby (or Edgar Wright) has great taste.

To conclude, I legitimately loved this movie. While it had a few issues, it was one of the most stylised and fun movies I’ve seen from the year, while also succeeding at being an effective action thriller. If you either don’t believe or can ignore the accusations made against Mr. Spacey, I feel this movie is a solid 9/10, held back only by a few minor issues in writing. In fact, while there are certainly better films, this one has quickly earned a place amongst some of my favourites.

In a film landscape that is crowded by superhero slop, Hollywood safe action movies, and Oscar-bait- it's refreshing to find a film that takes a genre that's been done to death, but subverts your expectations by adding an original spin to it. This movie is just a long music video for somebody's mixtape, and I loved every second of it. It knows exactly when it needs to be funny and when it needs to be serious, and the casting was absolutely perfect. Not to mention that I couldn't think of a better actor or actress for any of the characters, it has a completely all-star cast. If I had any criticism, it's that after the stellar opening act, the next 30 minutes seem a bit slow in comparison. It enters kind of a weird tonal shift, but by the time the credits roll you've forgotten all about that. The editing, sound mixing, and effects take you on an unforgettable ride. Near perfect. Expand
