Both share a similar approach while also producing quite different pictures. The elegance and charm Tarantino manages to produce in his movies appear so natural and as though there was no other way that scenario could have played out. It seems the contrary in Wright's movies. They seem to succeed at it, yet it is not at all natural. I also had a hard time empathising with the movie's love narrative. I believe a bit more work should have been done to ensure that the audience realised why he loved this woman so much. Make no mistake, it's a pleasant movie to see. It's so close to being a must-see movie, yet it still has a lot of flaws. Expand

This movie is truly a joy to watch - and to return to. How the characters interact with eachother, how music is implemented into not only the movie but the narrative itself, how characters progress yet still have that veil of mystery around them - everything is just brilliantly executed. It's still a bit cliché-ridden and doesn't come out of its little narrative box, but it's still a fun movie with gorgeous and iconic driving scenes - one hell of a ride. Expand

I was an expert at driving cars in less than 2 hours. And all because of Baby Driver. While I first wanted to watch a horror movie or something, my choice has changed. Now I realize it's shameful that I haven't seen the Fast And The Furious movies yet. It immediately starts with action and from the start I also regretted that this has been on my watch list for so long. The film actually sucks you into the screen and doesn't let go for the next 2 hours. The music makes it even better than it is. And the stunts are perfect.

Conclusion:
This is a must-see for all racing and thriller fans. Two hours of non-stop action. Although a few minor things could have changed in credibility. It's the perfect movie for a night of action.

Edgar Wright is very talented when you can see it by watching this movie. As usual, it contains a lot of music, the work on synchronization between audio and visual is INSANE, you can feel the rythm in every scene.

It would be a beautifully packaged heist film but without substantial content if it weren't for the romantic ending that turns it into an almost too late feel-good movie.

As a fan of car chases, I was not disappointed. There is a heavy use/emphasis of music, not all contemporary but Motown/Stax type music, somewhat classic tunes and I liked how the visual action on screen coincided with the beat/rhythm of the tracks. I wasn't sure whether to give this a 5 star rating but I suppose it does have some cliches present, like the love interest of the main character and perhaps one or two plot aspects. There is a cheesiness present as well but I won't go into details so as not to provide spoilers. If you like car chase scenes or fast paced heist/action films and R&B music of the 60s and 70s then you'll likely enjoy this film, although it isn't quite a brilliant film as such, its undoubtedly a good, decent film thats well worth a watch. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A 10 is probably too high for this movie, to be terribly honest. But this is a somewhat biased review as Baby Driver is probably my personal favourite movie of all time. The writing definitely isn't great and there are many rough edges to the plot (the relationship with Debora is obviously rushed, why the **** didn't Baby shoot Jon Hamm in the head - you would think it's because he doesn't want killing people on his conscience but he kills Jon Hamm later anyway). But the soundtrack is incredible, the direction is perfect and the transitions are always unique and interesting. The colors are perfect... the music syncs up with gunshots and camera cuts... an amazing movie that is probably only an 8 but it's ****ing awesome so I'm giving it a 10. Expand

The opening scene is so iconic in and of itself that it almost immediately makes the film for me. It sets up the idea that the film will be flowing with the soundtrack and that music is important to the main character because of some personal trauma.

Where it drags for me are with two performances, those of Jamie Foxx and Kevin Spacey. For me Jamie Foxx is trying too hard to be an intimidating bad guy that he almost reaches Jared Leto's 'Joker' for me. Meanwhile, Kevin Spacey's performance is pretty lackluster and forgettable, even before the news about his past came out. His roll could've been better filled by someone else with a better presence, perhaps Kurt Russel? Overall it's a fun movie and has a lot of intricate sequences that should be watched with a keen eye, definitely give it a watch.

Wright wanted to make a super-cool film like Drive or Widows, except Edgar Wright isn't cool – he's a massive nerd. Which is fine, and it worked well for Scott Pilgrim vs the World, where you can embrace the finely choreographed action scenes, and laugh/cringe along with the rest of it.
Baby Driver starts out like a tightly-choreographed modern-day musical, but soon devolves into a fairly generic action film. The soundtrack, blared at full-volume is interspersed with frustrating whispered, mumbled, dialogue, which often feels like it's being read off the page, with exception of Lily James who brings a bit more emotional depth than the rest of the cast, who seem out of it.
There are a decent 20-minutes at the beginning of the third act where the tension builds. Unfortunately, the film then descends into every other action movie cliché you can imagine. The jokes aren't funny, but there are some clever set-pieces and flashy editing. A better concept would have been to focus on the Bonnie & Clyde romance, with protagonist jacking cars and driving to the music which is already playing – which happens once when 'Baby' takes the car from the ATL Twins. For someone who professes to have watched 1000 great films (link omitted per site policy), (yet admits to falling asleep during Tokyo Story), it surprises me how immature and shallow Baby Driver is. I'm sure the film's target audience of teenagers believed it to be a masterpiece when they saw it. I only hope once they grow up, they will roll their eyes at the thought. Regardless, Edgar Wright is still a great film-making talent with a unique voice. This film may not have appealed to me, but others loved it. Best of luck to him.

Baby Driver proves once again Edgar wrights ability to infuse style with substance,in a story about fast cars and disability, wich sadly gets a little held back by the need to tell an uncompelling love story.

The film is like a dance,in wich every single action goes with the music perfectly. In particular the car chase scene and the scenes of Baby dancing around town.Disability plays a large part in the film as well,Baby sickness is the reason for all the music and the film does a great job showing us his situation. The cast also does a stellar job in portraying this characters,a highlight here is Jamie Fox with a very sly and fitting performance.

The weakest part of the film is the love story being told here wich failed to be very compelling in my opinion, though i can't tell you about it very much because it would be a spoiler,a lot of things happen here that make little sense.

Anyway Baby driver is a great film that plays to edgar Wrights strengths and is enjoyable throughout, making it worth your time.

In a film landscape that is crowded by superhero slop, Hollywood safe action movies, and Oscar-bait- it's refreshing to find a film that takes a genre that's been done to death, but subverts your expectations by adding an original spin to it. This movie is just a long music video for somebody's mixtape, and I loved every second of it. It knows exactly when it needs to be funny and when it needs to be serious, and the casting was absolutely perfect. Not to mention that I couldn't think of a better actor or actress for any of the characters, it has a completely all-star cast. If I had any criticism, it's that after the stellar opening act, the next 30 minutes seem a bit slow in comparison. It enters kind of a weird tonal shift, but by the time the credits roll you've forgotten all about that. The editing, sound mixing, and effects take you on an unforgettable ride. Near perfect. Expand

But the writing is very weak. But who cares about the story, you're here for the car chases, right? Yikes. They're pretty boring. Sure, the cinematography is good, but Wright goes overboard here and you'll often see cars spinning unnecessarily. Also, the ending is so infantile I laughed out loud. Skip this one and go watch Shaun of the Dead again. Expand

The look and feel of the world created in this movie is both stylistic and very realistic in terms of what a city today looks like. The sets had a very artistic feel and showcased art that would be found all around cities today, making you feel even more immersed in this movie. Edgar Wright proves yet again that he is a master of scenery with how amazing the display of color and joy of the city. In movies today, I feel that we only see darker colors, only to get a grim display and unrealistic feel of what it is like in a nice city during the day.

The car chase scene were the marvel of this movie and have you on the edge of your seat during the entire movie. every car chase scene is practical and the stunts are amazing to watch. The use of practical stunts made for a more realistic feel and gave grit to the movie. It wasn’t over bloated like certain car chase movies are made today. For example, while I love the Fast and Furious films, the car scenes got increasingly ridiculous and just weren’t believable at all. For Baby Driver, you believe every second that someone is driving that car and no CGI crap was put in to try and trick you. I appreciate filmmaking like that, the use of practical stunts when they can be used is a great money saver and payoff for the movie and audience.

While all the performances and characters were directed and played very well, there was one character that didn’t sit well with me. That was Bats, played by Jamie Foxx, because this character was good but had me annoyed almost every time he was on screen. That’s not to say Jamie Foxx didn’t own every scene he was in, but every time he was on screen, he killed someone. The heartlessness of the character was just something I couldn’t enjoy and I found the worst character in the movie. What set me over the edge was a certain part in the movie where Bats almost killed someone Baby really cared about. Like I said, Jamie Foxx is in no way bad at all, it’s just his character had no payoff and lacked even a lick of compassion that we like to see in bad characters.

The one thing that could make or break this movie for some people is the love story between Baby and Debora. I can see some people buying into it completely and enjoying it for the entire movie. But, there are some parts that feel forced, particularly with how fast the two characters find love for each other. That might turn some people away from the movie and cause them to not enjoy the movie as much as others might. While I did buy into the love story, some people might find it hard to believe and become invested in throughout the movie. The reason this is the make or break point for this movie is because it’s one of those subplots that some will say could’ve been completely removed. If it had been removed, we still would’ve gotten a pretty good heist movie but some probably would’ve felt as if there was no payoff for Baby at the end if they cut the love story. So, that’s up to you when you see the movie whether to be invested in the love story or not.

Edgar Wright shows once again he is one of the best directors working today. His direction and writing are perfect for this movie and the have your eyes glued to the screen throughout. The performances are spot on, the music great and car chases thrilling. Baby Driver gives originality to a genre that has been done over and over again has one of the most investing stories in a genre that is very limited in some ways. As much as I adore Logan in 2017, I would say Baby Driver now takes the title of best movie of 2017 in my book.

Lets start with the cars. I have not been a fan of Fast and Furious films, but the chase scenes in this film run circles around that series if a certain reality of the moves matters to you. This is more in line with Bullit,French Connection, and the Italian Job films as far as great chases.

The music, fun, simply fun. Songs from every decade of my lifetime. Action best pure adrenaline action in years. You will be truly on the edge of your seat during much of the film.

Humor, what can I say, love Edgar Wright's humor and this is his best.

And oh what a cast! Loved every one of the leads performances. I think Ansel was a standout, but come on Jamie Foxx, Spacey, Hamm and the beautiful Lily James. And the other leading lady, Eiza Gonzalez, was unknown to me, but she was great with one terrific diner speech in particular.

The scenes where Baby is behind the wheel as the getaway driver are some of the best chase scenes I've seen in a long time, especially the opening chase scene. The action is also great, and the entire cast does an incredible job. With that being said, though, I did find some of the dialogue a bit blocky...but when that's my main complaint I'd say that I just got done watching a pretty damn solid movie.

I am a bit skeptical of Sony's potential plans to make a sequel, but no matter what happens with that Baby Driver will go down as one of the best movies I saw in 2017.

The film is about a young getaway driver named Baby (Ansel Elgort) who has been associated with a crime boss for most of his life and begins to partake in a series of heists which in exchange will provide him with the life that he wants.

Edgar Wright is without a doubt one of the most unique filmmakers working today and what makes each of his films clearly stand out from one another is how he incorporates style into each of his films, and I don't think there's ever been a case in any of his films where he has preferred style over substance. He uses the style aspect of the film to his advantage and essentially the style ends up creating the substance in his films, and this film is a prime example of that.

An interesting supplement to the film was the music which was evidently going to be frequently present as made clear by the marketing, however I was very impressed with how the music was integrated with the filmmaking itself; I very much appreciated the fact that it wasn't simply just there to make certain scenes/sequences more fun and entertaining or just to make more profits off of a soundtrack, and instead it was used to help develop multiple things about the film from the characters to the world that the film takes place in.

One of the big highlights of the film is of course the car chases which are easily among some of the best I've ever seen in a film to date. Not only were they excellently shot (no shaky cam), choreographed and also edited, the stylistic parts of the film really helped add the adrenaline to each sequence; from the very first scene, the build-up of music adds an unbelievable amount of tension and excitement all at once and when the chase finally begins you are immediately on the edge of your seat.

The performances are great all-around; Ansel Elgort does a great job as the main character of Baby and while he does have a quiet persona, it avoids turning him into a bland, lifeless character and instead the music and style of the film helps us relate to him with his inner passion and understand his character. Another notable performance is Jon Hamm in a great performance as quite a challenging character.

I know that I've mentioned the music and style multiple times but it is easily the most surprisingly important element of the entire film as it not only provides an entertaining backtrack to multiple sequences, it also helps realise plenty of the characters, Baby in particular; as I stated earlier his character doesn't speak much but we're able to learn so much about him as the music appears as some sort of demonstration of his personality and we learn everything we need to about the characters without the need for exposition to explain them. In conclusion, the style creates the substance.

The film retains an incredible pace throughout (a notable element in all Edgar Wright films) and also has a great deal of humour too, also in multiple places it goes in directions that you may not expect and cleverly avoids the clichés which makes for an even more thrilling ride.

Overall, Baby Driver was a constantly thrilling, excellently paced, expertly crafted film that uses the style to its advantage which creates a very unique film which will undoubtedly become a classic in later years. I highly recommend it.

Don't mess with this Baby!

One of the stylish film of the year. There's nothing special about the story, but the way it was made looks intriguing. The individual characters, music, stunts, obviously car chases. Not the best role Ansel Elgort has ever played, but in his short, beginning of the career, it quite possibly defines he's ready for the tough roles. Then the British filmmaker known for some wonderful action-comedies, one more addition to his hit kit.

A youngster who is a getaway car driver for heists, working under a criminal mastermind, is often teamed with a different crew. One of his latest job takes an unexpected twist, leaving his yet to bloom romance with a waitress in peril. His attempt to come out of that, the risk he takes, changes his life forever. The tale ends with an action packed finale.

This is the first Kevin Spacey film I'm seeing after all the allegation against him. I blame everyone equally who had let him do it all these years. But that's nothing to do with this film. He was fine as an actor as always. It's just fine to be as one-off film, but the way everything had happened looked like it could have been a great franchise. As of latest news, it is on. The sad part is, all the good characters won't return. Anyway, it is one of the must see from the year T17.

Perhaps something similar to the ‘Fast and Furious’ franchise, with an interesting soundtrack. Upon seeing that Edgar Wright was directing it, however, I knew that wouldn’t be the case. As the director of some of my favourite comedy films, I knew he would bring something special to the movie.

I wouldn’t actually consider this film a comedy. That isn’t to say it isn’t funny; it is. The comedy wasn’t invasive, and was never the sole purpose of a scene, unlike in many other big-budget movies this past year. Instead of derailing the plot, comedy is used effectively and sparingly, never showing up during tense moments. The film allows you to feel nervous when you’re supposed to, and laugh when out of harm’s way.

The action in this film is fantastic, though I feel the chases are really the highlight. The car chases are not only thrilling, but smart. While Baby (Ansel Elgort) drives, you can actually see him working out what to do next, and how to go about losing his pursuers. At one point, there is a foot chase, which is also rather brilliant. Again, you can see the character actively thinking as he moves, and there is some impressive action exhibited throughout. The gun-play is, in my opinion, the weakest of the action elements. With that said, it isn’t bad, simply without much originality or style. The characters act brashly, which is enjoyable, but I rarely felt tension when a gun was involved.

Ordinarily, I might ignore focusing on such an element, but as it’s integral to the plot, I shall briefly discuss the romance between Baby and Deborah (Lily James). As much as it pains me to say this, I feel it was probably one of the weakest elements. Much of it happens rather suddenly. For myself, however, it was saved by Elgort and James’s chemistry together; their conversations were rather sweet, despite Baby’s seeming difficulty to converse with the girl.

Following this trend, I’ll move on to the characters. While none of them are ever boring, they are all arguably one-note and rather simple. There’s rarely much depth to them. Adding the depth needed to make them perfect, however, may have led to the film dragging and becoming boring. As it stands, I never found myself checking my watch. With that said, I still enjoyed each and every one of them; the actors all did a fantastic job bringing them to life. Funny characters can go on to be intimidating, then back to comedic seamlessly, and vice-versa. Discussing the actors, however, brings up an unfortunately unavoidable controversy.

Kevin Spacey has recently been accused of many accounts of sexual misconduct. Regardless of whether or not these accusations are true, this may well ruin his portrayal in the film for you. If you are able to separate art from the artist, this shouldn’t be an issue. For those who feel these allegations are too serious, however, I shall let you know his character isn’t too prominent in the film. He also plays a sort of semi-antagonist throughout the earlier portions of the film. And if you hate his guts, *Spoilers until the next paragraph* you get to see him die towards the end, too! Rather brutally, at that.

Finally, I have to talk about the music. Like many films recently, Baby Driver makes use of an unconventional soundtrack. Many of the songs featured are classics from decades past, and much like Guardians of the Galaxy, there’s an actual reason for it. Edgar Wright even checked with James Gunn to be sure they wouldn’t use the same songs in the then-unreleased Guardians of the Galaxy 2! Unlike the aforementioned marvel movies, however, the music is more than a novelty. The entire film revolves around Baby’s music. Much of the action happens to the beat of songs, and many times the lyrics of a specific tune will match the scene in which it’s featured. It also features a wide variety of genres, including, but not limited to, Rock, Soul, Jazz and some classic Pop. Baby (or Edgar Wright) has great taste.

To conclude, I legitimately loved this movie. While it had a few issues, it was one of the most stylised and fun movies I’ve seen from the year, while also succeeding at being an effective action thriller. If you either don’t believe or can ignore the accusations made against Mr. Spacey, I feel this movie is a solid 9/10, held back only by a few minor issues in writing. In fact, while there are certainly better films, this one has quickly earned a place amongst some of my favourites.

It's rare to find a movie as subtly innovative & original as Baby Driver, especially when the musical nostalgia is this consistently strong. The opening scene is especially glorious, and sets a new benchmark for modern cinema to compete with.

Edgar Wright has become one of a handful of star directors in recent years.

Some filmmakers’ work demands attention simply because of their back catalogue. Quentin Tarantino, Christopher Nolan, Steven Spielberg; audiences will go out to see their films simply because of who directed them.

With Baby Driver, Edgar Wright has firmly cemented himself in the star directors category.

This is a film by film lovers, for film lovers, blending music, stunning visuals, action choreography and an outstanding ensemble cast to create a cinematic experience that is simultaneously a throwback and something completely new.

Ansel Elgort plays Baby a young getaway driver pressured into a life of high-speed heists by crime boss Doc (Kevin Spacey). In a seamless blend of character and film-making style, Wright creates the character of Baby with a unique affliction.

Suffering from tinnitus, Baby listens to music via a pair of (carefully product placed) apple earbuds to drown out a constant drone. Putting the audience firmly in Baby’s shoes, the director has curated an eclectic soundtrack that is blended throughout the film. At times Baby will mime, or walk/dance along with his chosen track, sometimes gunshots and action are synced with the beat of the film’s jukebox.

This style is something that takes a while to get used to and, while innovative, there are moments when the film comes dangerously close to becoming a music video rather than a straightforward narrative.

Just when it’s getting a bit much, Wright brings everything back to earth with some fantastic performances from the central cast. Ansel Elgort brings a delicate balance of ‘impossibly cool’ and real world vulnerability to Baby that manages to keep the character grounded despite his, at times superhuman, abilities.

At the heart of the film is Baby’s relationship with Debora (Lily James) a waitress at a local dinner. The pair share some great on-screen chemistry that reminds me of Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone in the Amazing Spider-Man films (by no means a bad thing). If this central (at times overly romanticised) pairing didn’t work, the whole film would fall flat. Lucky the two young leads, armed with some charming dialogue, are more than up to the task.

As his relationship with Debora grows, Baby’s life of crime catches up to him and it’s not long before things start getting tense, thanks mostly to Bats (Jamie Foxx), the obligatory ‘loose cannon’ of the crew.

I say obligatory, but Wrights’ ability to play with genre conventions and character archetypes should never be underestimated, things do not play out the way you think they would.

Every member of the ensemble does a great job of playing their roles perfectly without scene-stealing or grandstanding. Jamie Foxx, Jon Hamm and Kevin Spacey; each one of those names is a leading actor you could build a film around. Here though they bring added gravitas and intensity to the more dramatic scenes, leaving Wright to do what he does best.

The director has always had an eye for kinetic action. In Hot Fuzz, Scott Pilgrim and a standout scene in the underrated The World’s End, fight choreography and camera work go a long way to giving the director his signature style.

In Baby Driver though, Wright has a much bigger toy box to play with and it pays off spectacularly. These are some of the best car chase scenes you’ve seen in years, putting films like the Fast and Furious franchise to shame with pure, in-camera stunt work.

While the breathless pace of the films’ final act threatens to give the audience a bit of cinematic whiplash, the cast and director manage to give each character a satisfying arc, although not necessarily in the way you might expect.

Baby Driver is a love letter to car chase cinema and to heist movies (Wright has been very open about his influences even putting on a programme of his favourites at the BFI) but above all the film is a celebration of music. No matter what your personal taste, the soundtrack crosses musical boundaries and that is precisely the point.

In a summer full of reboots, crossovers and sequels, the action, musical, drama is a breath of fresh air and one no film fan should miss.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I get what the movie is trying to be. It is trying to be a different kind of action movie. It part, Baby Driver actually is different - maybe not as much as it could have been.

The camera work is good. We have some unusual movements here, some one-takes there, it's well put together. What makes it great, though, is how the camera interacts with the music. Everything that happens on screen in sync with the music in the background. It makes the viewing experience rhythmic, fast-paced, but still comprehensible. Speaking of music, it's a very big part of Baby Driver, just like one could reckon from watching the trailers. The music fits the confidence of movie, although it could have been explained a little bit more. There are attempts made to give Baby (and other characters) a background stroy, but it's all a little superficial, so not exactly believable. Same with the acting. Everybody plays excellent, no question. But at times, they're playing a little too much like theater actors. If some of the tension between Baby and his crush was taken away from their acting and put into innovative camera work, the scenes would have been a lot more authentic. All in all though, the first two thirds of the movie are great fun to watch.

Less fun is the remaining bit. Mainly because I'm convinced the whole package would have been much better if the movie was 20 minutes shorter and would have just ended the way everybody was expecting it to. Instead, we have to sit through 20 minutes of car-chasing and shooting (as if we haven't seen enough of it in the hour before) and a very unnecessary "twist", which eventually still leads up to the expected ending. I guess because the movie did a couple of things differently production-wise (compared to typical action movies), they wanted to stick out plot-wise too, but didn't think their plan through.

All in all it's very entertaining for the most part, just switch off the tv when Buddy begins to hunt Baby...

This is a more subtle film than the rest of Edgar Wright's films but in my opinion it's his greatest accomplishment yet. The cast bounce off each other magnificently and Elgort is a surprisingly compelling lead. The action is exhilarating thanks to the fact that it's all actually real and not just CGI and the music that accompanies the film adds so much flavour to scenes and those sequences become really vivid when you listen back to the soundtrack. Amazing, breathtaking journey. Expand

I wasted my time watching a movie that was highly rated only to realize that the critics and website was bought in an attempt to overinflate a rating. For this movie to get an 86 score is DISGRACEFUL, this is the worst piece of garbage I have seen in ages. Terrible acting, terrible plot, the cheesiest and most unrealistic outcomes, unrealistic on so many levels. BEWARE DO NOT WATCH, I HAVE NEVER WRITTEN A REVIEW BUT THIS WAS SO BAD I HAD TO!!!!! Expand

The driving scenes in this movie are intense and the other aspects are well done, but nothing special. It feels slightly tacky, but it's still the best car chase movie to come out since Drive.

The driving sequences are good, but the inter-personal conflicts are far too contrived. It's a heist movie, it's not hard to come up with good reasons for tension between criminals, and yet Baby Driver bends over backwards to create artificial tension with random thugs picking a fight with Baby even after he's saved their bacon. The movie also leans heavily on a romance that just doesn't really work all that well in my opinion, the girl is hopelessly in love with Baby from their first scene and it doesn't really go anywhere after that. Finally, Baby's over-wrought conscience is a bit hard to square with his actions in the film. We're supposed to see him as a good kid in a bad spot, but he is an accessory to dozens of serious crimes and put civilians in danger constantly. In the end, I would recommend Drive instead, but Baby Driver is still a good time. Expand
