I really enjoyed watching Avatar, it was kind of like spending a couple of hours at Disneyland, it was light fun. I would have given it a higher rating but the story was really weak, and it was a bit too heavy on the tree-hugging aspect I really enjoyed watching Avatar, it was kind of like spending a couple of hours at Disneyland, it was light fun. I would have given it a higher rating but the story was really weak, and it was a bit too heavy on the tree-hugging aspect (Capitalism, man, & the military are evil and nature and the environment are to be untouched). I'm sure all the climate-change (formally global warming) nuts will give this movie a 10, and thats ok, It's visuals and action alone did not merit a 10 for me. There was never any explanation why the material in "Pandora" was so important to the military other than it was worth alot of money so the core of the story was never explained. The action and visuals were great, I really liked all of the action sequence's, stunning special effects, and creativity of the "Pandora" world. The movie was a bit long and the plot as I mentioned was pretty lame, it had alot of similarity to something like Bravehart. I saw the movie in 3D and it was good, however, after the first 30 minutes I did not even notice the 3D anymore so I would imagine that it would be just as good without the 3D. I would reccomend this movie for the visuals and action, if you are an anti-capiltalist or environmentalist you will absolutely love this movie for its tree-hugging message! Expand

Great effects, meticulous mythology. Ultimately a pat and unoriginal story. Like Dances with Wolves meets Terminator.

First of all I would like to say that I have never reviewed a movie on here before but am sick and tired of people thinking that a movie rating is based on how much you can insult a movie or how clever you can make yourself sound. Avatar First of all I would like to say that I have never reviewed a movie on here before but am sick and tired of people thinking that a movie rating is based on how much you can insult a movie or how clever you can make yourself sound. Avatar itself is the first movie that I have ever seen that totally dragged me in. No the story wasnt anything brand new but it certainly is not boring or old. The graphics were groundbreaking and quite often breathtaking but that wasnt overshadowed by a rubbish story. The characters sometimes seemed a little typical but a fantastic performance by Sigourny Weaver at least added one major lead acting role. All in all the movie is well worth watching if you go into this movie expecting too much then thats your fault. Go and enjoy it for what it is a feel good sci fi movie directed by an all round decent director. Expand

The most impressive part of this movie was the world of Pandora and the cgi visuals. The story was very shallow without ever really explaining what was so great about the special mineral found in Pandora other than it was worth alot of $$ to the government/military. The not suprising Hollywood message is preached throughout Man=evil nature=good, which is kinda funny because they are all laughing their way to the bank (already grossed over 1 billion!) using our capitalist way of life that they dislike so much. On the good side, if you are a greenie type you will want to hug a tree after leaving the theater! Expand

I thought it was decent...definitely overrated. It had impressive CGI but a crappy script. I am really surprised by all the attention it is getting. Not terrible, but not the best of the year either.

Of course, the problem being that the story is full of cliche, and as far as I'm concerned, it didn't tackle any interesting issues enough to warrant it higher than an 8 really. It's about long-haired, meat eating Native Americans!! Those big, blue guys are the Lakota Sioux (the Green Berets of the plains) fighting off the evil U.S. Cavalry and even eviler General Custer! Our hero is even an homage (or ripp-off) of the Kevin Costner character from Dances with Wolves. You know, white guy goes native then leads the noble savages to victory against his former countrymen!!! There's also characters (the suit working for the mysterious company that's out to rape the planet) and plot devices from the the greatest science fiction movie franchise ever, Alien, Aliens, Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection. And guess who starred in all four - Sigourney Weaver! All is not lost however, because fortunately, sometime in the first three minutes of the film our soon to go blue native hero mentions that back on Earth he and his fellow marines fought for freedom, but now they're actually hired guns working for the Company. Good thing the producers made it clear that these were not U.S. marines on active duty or people like me would of been picketing theaters. In fact, this too is a borrowed motif from Alien and Aliens which also starred former U.S. soldiers now hiring themselves out as mercenaries for the (they learn later) evil Company. Me and boys re-played the WWII dogfight footage inspired gunship vs. Gaia worshipping warriors (with lovely lady shamans too) over and over. Fantastic action and the underdog good guys even win! Wow, talk about tapping into the American sympathies while still condemning America's nature raping, military hardware loving and George Bush inspired mperialistic aspirations. I wish I'd had a chance to invest in the film early on so I could too could of criticized the good ol' U.S. of A. while making a ton of money off its economy too!!!!! Expand

Friday afternoon, a friend and I had gone to see Avatar in RealD 3D at a theatre that was near her house. We enjoyed about 45 minutes of the film when it started to skip... it stopped and started about 3-5 times before it finally froze and shut down. The crowd was outraged and we were told to leave and get "Rain Check" passes at customer service because the system had failed and the movie would not play, it would take 3 hours to fix. So with complete disappointed we got out rain check passes and decided to come back the next day after the problem would be fixed. The first 45 minutes that we did see that day was pretty cool so far, so we definitely wanted to give it another go. As we sat in our seats this afternoon (12/19/09) I sensed that something was going to go wrong, and I could tell my friend had similar intuitions. When the movie was finally about to start, they showed the "please silence your cell phones screen" and then... it stopped.... frozen... the manager came in and told us what we had feared.... it froze... again and it would take forever to fix. We left the theatre utterly pissed and completely done with the stupid theatre. Full of outrage, I expressed my anger with one of the employees. I attempted to get my money back, she of course told me it was impossible, and instead gave us rain check passes and a few extras because of our inconvenience. (sweet? bitter sweet) We decided to go to Imax instead, we figured the massive screen would make the experience all the more amazing. After driving the long way there, parking, and then running many blocks to Imax, out of breath, we were met with an enormous line and a sign that said "Avatar 3D, SOLD OUT" Blast! To cut to the chase, after running back to the parking garage, we went to another theatre owned by the same company as the other theatre that screwed up, and were able to use our passes and get in, and yes that time it worked, no screw ups. After all of this complete heck... IT WAS WELL WORTH IT!! After we left the theatre, we cared little about the shenanigans that went down in attempts to see the movie. We had completely forgotten and were only focused on the movie, and still trying to process it. I've heard complaints about the music and that it wasn't very good... it was great. It was what you'd expect of an epic sci-fi. I've also heard complaints about the story; I didn't see any problem with it either. The only problem I saw was with some of the acting, there were a few actors that didn't seem to do as good of a job as you'd expect for a movie of this magnitude. BUT, the actors in questions were not the focus of the movie and weren't shown often enough to interfere with the experience, thus it wasn't a big problem. The visual effects of this movie were completely amazing. It was hard to believe that most of what we were viewing was all visual effects. The landscapes, the creatures, they were all very crisp and clear, and very realistic. Coupled with the 3D glasses, it almost seemed as if you were there. It is almost hard for me to even describe. The concepts of the movie were not 100% original. A lot of it has been done already to some degree. But the way in which they were presented, to me, seemed totally original. There is something said in the movie that will make you understand more fully the Navi and their existence. Its something that Dr. Augustine said to Mr. Selfridge about the way the planet works and its relationship with the life on the planet. It has something to do with the goddess that the Navi follow. I would say more, but I dont want to spoil it for anyone. Despite the crap that went down before seeing the movie, I enjoyed the experience. I have no regrets, I am absolutely pleased that I went to see it, and glad that I saw it in 3D. It was amazing. Go see it. Now. Expand

I just finished watching Avatar in boring old 2D. I expected that without the gimmicky glasses the film would lose most of what people are raving about (see Beowulf) but darned if that wasn't an awesome film. I saw Titanic in '97 I just finished watching Avatar in boring old 2D. I expected that without the gimmicky glasses the film would lose most of what people are raving about (see Beowulf) but darned if that wasn't an awesome film. I saw Titanic in '97 and though the visuals were incredible, probably the best until Avatar, I felt that the story was too hackneyed to ignore just for the sake of special effects. Avatar has come in for some of the same criticism from some viewers, but though there isn't anything really new in this plot, it's surprisingly well written, at least for a big budget action film. But of course the story only needed to not be annoying, because the real reason everyone is going to see this film is the visuals, which even in plain old 2D are enough to make Lucas's last three space operas look like something out of Ed Wood's filmography. Only Lord of the Rings has come close to creating an entire world with this level of detail, and some of the same folks are on board for this film. But they have really outdone themselves. The only negative reviews I've seen from non-critics have been from conservatives who are offended by a movie that says we shouldn't rape and pillage native peoples and pristine environments. I'm not sure that's really a defensible position, so no comment there :) Expand

Let's face it, a truly original idea is nearly impossible to find, so saying Avatar is not that original is not that big of a slam. Another possible flaw is the 3D. It works, as far the effect, but is paying an extra few dollars to see it, there is no sense it added that much to the movie. This dream that 3D will make you feel like you are in the movie is not a reality here. The reality is if you want to feel like you are in the movie is for a technology to be developed the uses virtual reality glasses that allow you to have 360 3D views. I'll admit that the panache with which the visuals are delivered is worth at least one or two whole points. Cameron's pacing is very good, and the film's action scenes are some of the best filmed in the decade. Still, I'll admit that the panache with which the visuals are delivered is worth at least one or two whole points. Cameron's pacing is very good, and the film's action scenes are some of the best filmed in the decade. Still, it's not a groundbreaking film, I don't think, and the 3D was distracting, fuzzy, and ineffective. The storyline could have been great, but instead was destroyed by a limp script (the "Kansas" lines was really not needed), an overweening self-importance, and clumsy themes that really do become offensive. Cameron may not have meant this, but the film too strenuously scorned everything that is uniquely human. He tried to make us weep when trees are knocked over, but cheer when Americans are blown up. The "noble savage" plot wears thin with such a treatment, and I wondered at how incurious the Na'vi seemed. No character was genuinely interesting, and despite the melodrama, there was little to no emotion invested in the story. By the big end battle I just didn't care who won or not -- although I DID care what cool stunts would be shown next. See? So, the overall experience is fun and sparkly, as long as you can ignore the weak, sometimes-offensive message. Expand

Then again, it as produced by the same person who done Titanic, which was a very good movie. This movie, however, can be reviewed just like a video game: good graphics, bad gameplay. First half of the movie is an ultimate bore-fest, having almost nothing close to canon (JC, why did you allow "unobtanium?") . Second half is where everything is taken up a few notches, giving some very good fight scenes and a Star Wars-esque battlefield. It's pure nostalgia for the whole movie, and I like that. However, the reason why I give it a 7 is the matter of why I watched it in 3d. 3d is a fad, through and through, and this movie proves it. Ironically, it was the human metals in the first half that made everything look like a fake motion blur. For some reason, I really couldn't watch the movie because of this, and, if I watched this in 2d, it MIGHT have been a good 7.3 movie. Actual rating: 6.5 (bonus points to second half of movie). Avatar: Where Can I Get One of Those? For any person living in the eastern part of the United States, taking that long trek to the local movie theater probably was the last thing on your mind, while the thoughts of hot chocolate, and Avatar: Where Can I Get One of Those? For any person living in the eastern part of the United States, taking that long trek to the local movie theater probably was the last thing on your mind, while the thoughts of hot chocolate, and watching the snow was a higher priority. Yet even with the weather arduously not helping, Avatar starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Sigourney Weaver, still flashed onto to silver screen with something to prove. For anyone walking into this movie without any prior knowledge other than primetime trailers, they will be dazed and thrilled with the kaleidoscopic world brought from the reaches of the universe. Which is why it becomes no surprise to hear that Director James Cameron had been waiting to produce this movie for over fifteen years, only being stopped by CGI and limitations. However, once a $500 million budget was procured and graphics were to his visionary standard, everything was golden. And golden it was. Right from first ten minutes you get the essential story: Worthington was a Jarhead that was hurt, had a brother that died and got the chance to take his place on a science expedition on Pandora, a Earth-type moon with natural inhabitants, the Navi that are not happy with what humans are doing. From there the stage is set to meet the rest of the cast, and learn that Worthington job is to run an Avatar, a human-made version of the Navi to help learn their culture and get to know them better. However there is a hitch in the scientific plans in the form of Stephen Langs character, the officer in charge of the defense and mining of an important ore on Pandora. Langs only goal is to remove the Navi so that they can mine the hell out of the planet. Thus it is the fate of Worthingtons character to be stuck in the middle, battling with his conscious. The plot flows effortlessly between a steady dose of character development, action, and humor, which guarantees that most will be enthralled with the world presented. Worthingtons character Jake Sully, who has always been a solider, keeps the motto of speak only when it really counts. This makes him a good pair along Weavers character Grace, who is the lead scientist for the Avatar program. Cameron takes a lot of what made Weavers character amazing from Aliens and brought it back here, keeping her snarky and to the point. Yet the large selling point for the mammoth was its CGI and how they incorporated it. Im not going to try and sugarcoat it here; theres a lot. About 80% of this movie is based purely on the computer renditions of the actors while they are scurrying around out in the dense tropical forests of Pandora. And while the concept of it caused a bit of a ruckus before opening, they pulled it off flawlessly. Everything from the luminescent trees to the exotic creatures in this utopian world looked and fit perfectly into place. Whats more is that the facial and body structures of each character really made you feel like they were meant to exist. Especially watching Saldanas character Neytiri and how each movement in her face looked perfectly natural is an accomplishment. In fact, in most of the Navi, you could see almost the exact actor or actress behind their characters eyes, and know that they in fact were doing those exact movements. Cameron does an amazing job bringing you a masterful story, yet at times he almost loses both himself and the viewer in what he was talking about. The fanciful plants and pictures everywhere, the almost Bay-ish humor that would spring up on occasion, (which I feel is at no fault to Cameron, rather a ploy to get younger viewers more involved) you could have the potential to forget what Cameron is trying to get across in this episodic fantasy; and thats everyone and everything has a life. You observe as the Navi savor every twig, every leaf, pray to every kill they hunt for food, never enjoying what they do. It is a concept that stems from the 90s, yet has followed Cameron and has become a bigger part of todays world, with the threats of global warming and movies like The Inconvenient Truth. While Camerons intent was not to preach and to bring about the age of utopian society with nature, he walk back to the screen with a carpet of glowing moss under his feet, and nobody heard him coming. Maybe once, just once, has "I see you" worked as an effective bit of movie dialogue, and the moment when Neyriti(Zoe Saldana) tells Jake Sully(Sam Worthington) that, well, she sees him, isn't it. The soul mining of this Na'vi Maybe once, just once, has "I see you" worked as an effective bit of movie dialogue, and the moment when Neyriti(Zoe Saldana) tells Jake Sully(Sam Worthington) that, well, she sees him, isn't it. The soul mining of this Na'vi hottie performed upon this former marine is pure romantic pap, but "I see you" could have transcended its pedestrian connotations, had Jake's loyalties been more vacillating. A nice guy from the start, "Avatar" could have distinguished itself from "Dances with Wolves" comparisons by making Runs Like Manute Bol less compassionate and open-minded than the Kevin Costner character. Confined to a wheelchair, Jake's shoot to kill days are over, but that doesn't mean his warring mentality needed to be over too. The human infiltration into the Na'vi world needed just one benevolent presence(the scientist played by Sigourney Weaver), not two. After all, Jake is on a science-based detail, by default. If it wasn't for his accident, he'd be carrying a gun, and dancing with money. The tepid love story gains in power only if Neyriti was employed as the catalyst for Jake's transformation into a full-blooded Na'vi. But since he comes to Pandora without a shred of prejudicial feelings toward the planet's indigenous population, our protagonist has no character arc. Turning Na'vi-nese becomes inevitable, becomes ho-hum. It's probably the main reason why the story can't keep up with the special effects. The two sides, military and science, are too black and white, in terms of moralistic complexity. When Neyriti tells Jake that she sees him, the meaning is way too literal. (Jake is a human being.) "I see you" could have been issued as a challenge to be good, in the name of interspecies love. (For the record: "I see you" worked beautifully in Wayne Wang's "The Joy Luck Club"). Expand

So many at this point, that it is extremely rare that I experience any sense of awe or wonder at a film. "Avatar" stepped in and changed that for me in a tremendous way. If you're expecting a brand-new, never before seen tale, you've come to the wrong movie. The story and formula are tried and true, as both James Cameron and most other prominent directors in Hollywood well know. Where this movie steps out of that mold, is in the fantastic world that James and crew have created. The sea, land, sky, and life on display here are like nothing you've seen before, and yet, are so familiar that you slide right into the feel of the place like an old pair of jeans. As for story, learning, loving, betrayal, and redemption are all on display and used to competent effect. Where this movie really shines, however, is in three dimensions. I have yet to see a movie that uses the 3D so intelligently. Used here, 3D truly puts you inside the spaces of this film, and the experience is made all the better for it. As for the technology of the creatures, plants, and the blue-skinned, three-fingered Na'Vi, every one in Hollywood should sit up and take notice. There has been nothing yet to compare with the realism of everything on display. Gollum was long the benchmark by which CG performances were measured, but in my world, this is no longer the case. The Na'Vi, in terms of movement and emotion, are the most convincing creation ever to come out of a silicon chip. When they smile, you believe it. When they cry, you feel their pain. I stand up and salute James Cameron and all the brilliant computer artists who came together with technology to create an utterly believable world, along with the plants, animals and people who inhabit it. Coming back down to earth, I must say this will not go down as the greatest movie ever made. It has it's flaws. If you've seen a James Cameron film before, you probably know what to expect in terms of story, and I can't say that this will "change the way" we watch movies forever. What I can say is this. For the sheer experience of it, for the spectacle, for the awe and wonder, this is the best film on the big screen today. Expand

This movie was so great, only a few things were missing, which stopped me from giving it a 10. First thing is that at parts the movie felt slow paced, most parts the pace was perfect but a few parts here and there the pace was a bit slow. Also, I came and watched this movie not just to enjoy myself but also get educated about the world that Cameroon has created, but I was disappointed that I did not learn anything about the world, everything was just shown to you, you were never told any fascinating information, like why is there such a big tree sticking out of the ground+why do many of the Navi tribes live in it (maybe it is just a really large tree and its a rare species and the navi prefer living in it because it offers protection, but nor all Navis live in it because they are rare trees and not ever tribe can find one, or the answer could be more complicated than that), why are those mountains floating, why have certain creatures adapted in certain ways, why are the Navis so similar to humans, etc. Another problem was that there were really 2 events in the whole movie, the main character learning the ways of Navi and a big battle. The battle took up about 15-20% of the movie, while learning took up over 65% of the movie, while another 15+% of the movie was taken up by other things. Every single part that felt slow paced was in the learning section, they could have cut this down to a little over half of what it actually was and it would have made the movies pace perfect and they could have spent the extra time to explain the movie. Now there are few movies out there that can explain a whole universe in a single movie, a few examples are Lord of the Rings and Matrix (even though these 2 movies explained a lot of the universe in sequels most of it was explained in the original movie). I expected Cameroon to be able to do this since he is such a great director and the movie was so damn long but I was disappointed. But I am sure that the sequel (already in the talks) will explain the universe in detail to us which will make the first movie even more enjoyable to think about and watch. Thanks for reading. Expand

Oh, look at the evil corporation, willing to do anything to make a profit. and the unredeemable army that only want to destroy. overwhelming the native forest, until they all band together to fight back in a way no one could of predicted, oh wait I did predict it. Oh, and I am not hte only one who has bade this comparison, look for James Cameron presents Ferngully. Funny as hell, and oh so acurate. So Kudos to Cameron for revolutionizing Computer Generated imagery and animation, but please lets get some one else to write a real story next time, not one that has been done over and over again. The plot Built to be very similar to Pocahontas, basically a big social commentary about genocide and how stupid our militaries are. If a world such as this was found it would certainly be beaten, eaten, and exploited as in the movie. The plot isn't hackneyed, but it isn't very creative, leaving plenty of room for predictability, so it's hard to like when compared to Cameron's unpredictable masterpiece Titanic *applause sign*. Where the film actually falters is the bad guy. If every character who contains interest in killing the indigenous people was to have a MySpace/Facebook profile, it would contain a brief generic history written by some staff member along with an inspirational quote something along the lines of, "'Kill everything in your way in order to achieve fiscal benefit.' ~Adolf Hitler." Also, that quote is made up but I wouldn't put it past him. Expand

Its the next stage up in visuals and special effects that can hopefully be built on in the future to make some classic films. Nothing that you read about Avatar means much, it has to be seen to be believe. The charecters and story are forgettable but WOW its cool. And it does feel quite emotional even if its simple and even stupid at times. Expand

It is a beautiful looking movie, and overall it is probably one of the best sci-fi movies in a very long time.

I mean great on a level that would have made this film iconic. Instead, it pandered and borrowed, and used every trick it could to distract us from the fact that the story has been told before. In fact, it was told recently in The Last Samurai, and less recently in Dances with Wolves. That is the films major flaw. There are minor ones as well. If ever there was a film that deserved a magnificent, soaring, original John Williams score that people would instantly recognize, this was it. Something along the lines of Star Wars, Superman, Raiders or Jaws. Instead we get an ignominious James Horner piece overflowing with his tiresome use of choirs and way too much borrowing from his previous scores. I can't imagine he is happy with this effort after creating FAR better music for films like Titanic, Braveheart, The Land Before Time, Willow, Aliens, Glory and probably his best work, Star Trek II. In my opinion, Hans Zimmer would have been the logical choice, considering the rip he's been on lately. At the very least, they should have given Alan Silvestri a shot. A few of the other minor flaws... Too many obvious plot devices (fog that prevents instruments from working, A tree that can conveniently transfer souls from useless human bodies to perfect alien bodies, etc) Too much overt storytelling. Can't you let the audience come to the conclusion that everything is "connected." Why did we have to have it explained to us? Some minor stupidity, like machine guns that can't hit much of anything. In fact, why couldn't they have simply used their gigantic bulldozer to destroy the tree at the end? Floating mountains? How? Anyway, I was entertained enough by the visuals to allow enough of these gripes to slip by without feeling the movie had been spoiled. It's just frustrating at how often films like this only need a little more oversight to avoid these painful flaws. Expand

Beginning with Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, King Kong, and ending with Avatar. And this film fits right in. Avatar is not just a movie. It is the best 3-Dimmensional movie of all time. Instead of knives and shit being throughn in your face, this movie focusses on the look. And for a once-in-a-lifetime experience, this movie gets the job done. Director James Cameron has once again gone way above my expectation. The romance, special effects, and wonderous experience of stepping into the world of Pandora through the 3D is exciting enough to surpass any movie for the Best Picture Oscar this year. James Cameron is the only Hollywood filmmaker to realize the beauty and art in 3D, and is the only filmmaker I know who has made a great movie into it. Expand

After a year and a half, the film became the highest-grossing film ever made. Now it appears with his new film, Avatar he may top that. Without explaining the plot the film was overall a masterful film which overcomes the thought of it being a traditional film. The film presents an alternate form of conquest when mankind had lost it's passion and respect, demonstrated in how the main characters and the military base they work at appears in a monotone colour scheme of dark greys and greens while the surrounding planet is vibrant in its colour. Acting wise the film had a mixed result. Sigourney Weaver came off as the best in the film with every line she said being sarcastic or semi-humor. Michelle Rodriguez on the other hand, while good in her role, served the basic purpose of being eye-candy. Sam Worthington was mixed, while he did good at delivering his lines, his narrations at parts in the film felt stiff. The special effects worked very well, after a while they become part of the movie and you forget that it is CGI. While the film was overall well-done their were faults. For the first half the film is confusing and does not seem like it will improve. it feels annoying, but improves after the main character is lost in the forest. Some parts such as the general not dying when he should die feels like the editor should have fixed this. Another problem, not related to the film was the 3D process. It used a 1980's 3D process which involved clear stripe 3D glasses and it was not needed for this film. The film has around two to three moments where the effect works, but the whole movie is in 3D so during most of the film it becomes an annoying problem, it would have been better if they has simply not released a 3D version. In the end while these faults are prevalent, the film bypasses most of these faults, expect the 3D faults, and works as an excellently written and visually beautiful film. Expand
