I really hope that Aquaman has been a big turning point for DC and from now their movies will have more light, fun (and better CGI). Aquaman is movie not only for young people and superhero funs, but for all family. I watched it twice - with my friends and with my daughter 5 y.o and my mother - we all liked it a lot. James Wan and of course Jason Momoa could transform one of the most ridiculous , lamest superhero into a great superhero. Expand

The CGI is a tad overused in the first half and there are a few too many 'hero shots' but the film gets over its cheesiness pretty quickly and presents an interesting and funny main character in Aquaman, his similarly witty companion Mira, and a fascinating world filled with beauty, terror and a very nice layer of intrigue on top. Some of the jokes fall a little flat and some of the scenes are a touch too cheesy but overall, Aquaman is a fun and compelling watch.

Aquaman is The Best Movie in 2018.

The Movie is so damn cool and is loaded up with nail-gnawing moments didn't anticipate this from the Dc universe. The trailer was promising Taking the trailer as a thought of Dc films the trailers have done to publicity up the motion picture yet the consequence of the motion picture isn't that great yet Aquaman transformed it, it's an astonishing motion picture. It did live up the desires for fans the manner in which they venerate Arthur and Mera's relationship in funnies! A few scenes were very paramount ( Won't state them as it's a non-spoiler survey) ... Aquaman is an exceptionally intriguing character he's proficient to do numerous kinds of stuff you'll know when you watch the motion picture he's boss, Funny a decent blend of a superhuman identity! Aquaman is an unquestionable requirement watch motion picture.

Great adventure like action, was hell of a roller coaster ride. Even though there isn't much to the story, it was certainly full of plot holes, but the movie wasnt meant to be taken too seriously. But noticeably is that Atlantis appears to be populated by white people only. The myth about Atlantis is that it was an island in the Mediterranean or the Southern part of the Atlantic ocean. That means it should be populated with a mix of Mediterranean or African people. And that means people with a darker skin and darker hair color. That wasn't the case in the entire movie. So I am afraid its yet again a bit of a white washed Hollywood depiction. In this case it's not the fault of Hollywood, most action hero comics are a bit white supremacists. Not trying to politicize the movie, but its worrisome that these kind of things are starting to get noticeable which influences the movie going experience and enjoyability.... Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Aguahombre is the best DC movie made since Wonder Woman, which means almost nothing...

In general, it feels like Aquaman suffers from a content problem. His source material is pretty weak, so any adaptation of that material will either be forced to deviate too far or follow too closely. The biracial storyline is pretty prominent, which, as Wife puts it, is a signal for the evil characters, who exclusively call Aquaman a half-breed mongrel (similar warm and fuzzy feelings from the short film in Incredibles 2, Bao). But beyond that innovation, and some humanizing of the Black Manta character (who seems generally pretty bankrupt), there’s not a lot of substance to this two and a half hour romp through the ocean.

There are a lot of Cricket Rules (esp the “mission creep” trope) from the very beginning that get in the way of the Bad Guy doing whatever he wants to destroy the land people from the very beginning. Even despite all the rules, he almost immediately goes about sending massive tsunami to destroy coastal cities and later when negotiations fail, straight up assassinates his rivals with no repercussions.

On the hero’s side of things, Aquaman, as brother’s Wife comments, isn’t really interested in the “second half of life” story of its hero–the Jungian story of his journey. Instead, the film is bogged down by jarring flashbacks of single moment lessons that Aquaman learns as a child with no gesture toward development or reflection afterwards, which gives off a kind of Slumdog Millionaire vibe, like Aquaman is literally relying on twenty second clips of memory to make vital decisions in the present day. Maybe the most poignant development for Aquaman has to do with his realization concerning Black Manta. But the whole Black Manta thing itself is a little weird. He seems like a weirdly small secondary problem compared to the impending doom of the earth, easily dispatched after a few jumped roofs and some cracked bottles of wine Sicilian wine.

Mera’s wooing to accept the legitimacy of land-dwelling includes just two points of reference, the Sahara desert and a quaint town in coastal Sicily. Their travels never take them to the kinds of places on earth that make her question land-dweller’s lifestyles in the first place. Mera has some legitimate concerns about the downsides of consumerism that are never addressed. Also, the ease with which she’s able to find Aquaman in his childhood hometown makes one wonder why he wasn’t surrounded and murdered much earlier by the king’s goons.

The script is unevenly funny–sometimes intentional, as with the “fishman not fishboy” bit, and sometimes less so, as with the “Sea Master” bit, which sounded like a BDSM game than a real title people could roll with.

On superhero cultural amnesia: Aquaman definitely knows about Aquaman, but there’s a definite weird blindspot to the film where he acknowledges that the Justice League has just finished defeating a different threat to humanity together, but now no one can be found to lend him a hand in his life or death struggle against his half-brother. Not an (similarly) indestructible Superman or the world’s fastest man or Wonder Woman or the Batman can spare a moment to check in and see if he needs a hand.

While we’re talking about strange missteps, the beast guarding the trident that’s been missing for “aeons” seems shocked that Aquaman can understand her, even though she’s delivering some pretty select roasts of his family history and legitimacy. And once he explains the situation she backs off pretty quickly and tells him she’s sort of just back up and the trident itself will kill him if he’s not the true heir to the throne, so what’s with that redundancy? Why didn’t the trident let any of the ladies attempt to claim it for the decades that she/they were trapped there?

Also, pretty sure there’s an octopus playing drums at some point during a fight scene that we’re all just going to remain quiet on?

Villain is stronger than the hero: that seems wrong on two fronts. Black Manta is at a number of disadvantages even after his upgrades. The half-brother king breaks his own mother’s quintident early on but after Aquaman proves that some backwards skeleton king from two thousand years ago doesn’t melt his flesh off and he wants it more, Aquaman is able to best him in land-based combat.

Lastly, on the innovative powers front: solo comic book movies usually use the development of one’s powers as a stand in for their emotional growth, but Aquaman doesn’t really do much power growing in this film. He can swim fast, he has super strength, and literally nothing does more than stop him for a little, so it’s hard to see space for new powers or a new take on old powers, really.

Aquaman is worth it to see if only to watch Jason Momoa shirtless for a little bit, a guilty pleasure that will tide us all over until it’s time for 80s Wonder Woman to set a new record.

Jason Momoa takes on the title role with his immense presence and the demeanor of a regular, rough-around-the-edges guy. There's a plot that so feeble it doesn't need to be addressed. The underwater kingdom is full of beautiful, imaginative visuals and slightly bizarre creatures. Director James Wan (primarily known for the "Saw" series) brings his skills with action to create some impressive fight sequences, although (like most of these superhero films) the last big battle is too long and too cluttered. Overall, it's less serious and more fun than many comic book flix. NOTE: Stay thru the closing title sequences for a hint of the sequel. Expand

His action and battle sequences are nothing short of epic with the latter being large enough in scale to rival even the most thrilling conflicts in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy. The CGI is pretty dodgy, but that's kind of forgivable given how nobody's really tried all of this underwater stuff before. Tougher to overlook the on land portions though, especially with those glaringly obvious green screens.

This is kind of like the DCEU's Black Panther. You've got a guy battling for a throne he feels unworthy of and a cast of characters who are ultimately outshined by the world they live in. The film basically takes place in an underwater Wakanda, only with somehow even more fantastical elements. I never formed an emotional connection with anything despite the film's constant efforts to try and convince me that Arthur's mommy issues actually mattered, but I was nonetheless fascinated by all the places I was being taken onscreen.

Our ability to really connect with the characters is hindered by how lively the plot is. There's so much going on that it's hard to believe things never feel overstuffed or exhausting despite the fact that the pace never relents for a single second. Impressive given how having this much content led to Spider-man's cinematic demise twice before he found his way to the MCU. Of course it also doesn't help that Wan layed the Velveeta on thick. A move that feels intentional, but robs the movie of some quality that otherwise would have been there.

Aquaman remains a lot of fun though. It plays out like an action-adventure movie with Jason Momoa trotting around the globe in search of an ancient weapon like some kind of mega-buff Indiana Jones. There's plenty of jaw-dropping spectacle and Atlantis is such an imaginative, fascinating place that it's hard to take your eyes off the screen no matter how irreverent and goofy things can get.

Finally, with Aquaman, fans get the type of movie they've always wanted from DC, and I see big things for the future of this franchise. Arthur (Jason Momoa) is the son of the Queen of Atlantis and a mortal man. He was born with extraordinary abilities, but not with the motivation to use them. After his mother was exiled and presumably killed by Atlantis, Arthur wants nothing to do with his people, until a world wide threat forces him to take action. The story here is the same as your basic comic themed film, saving the world while trying to get the girl, but what makes Aquaman really stand out is it's incredible special effects. Seeing as many films as I do, it's difficult to impress me with a little bit of CGI, but this film had some of the best effects I have ever seen! Even if this was a silent film the sheer beauty and magic of this underwater world would still be breath-taking. Jason Momoa stars in his biggest role to date and this guy absolutely killed it. My biggest fear going into this film was that it would be too cartoonish and led by a newcomer, not a great combination, but Momoa is terrific both his personality and in his ability to put on one hell of a fight scene. As for the cartoonish part, there is a little bit of that and it was a turn off, but you do need to pander to the young crowd a film like this is likely to draw. For my money, this is the best DC Comics film since the Dark Knight. I'm not the biggest Superhero fan and I absolutely loved this movie from beginning to end. The two and half hours literally flew by and in the end I was still craving more. I can't wait to see what's next for Aquaman. Expand

Seriously, many many scenes didn't even need to be CGI but they were. I wonder if anyone in the cast even got wet filming this movie sometimes. Though the art style is amazing, the directing style is almost child-like... very similar to Michael Bay or something like Zak Snyder just more colorful. Too much camera spinning and zooming in a way that's impossible for a real camera so you know it's CGI. The choreography is pretty good, however.
I've loved Momoa since Game of Thrones and he has tons of charisma and puts 100% into every role he plays. The casting is incredible in this movie but they are not given much to do. Aquaman started out great but then fell into literally an hour of exposition. This stuff is not that complicated, writers. We are not dummies we can get it without an explanation for everything. On top of that most of the comedic moments fell flat and were something like the humor of 80s movies which is quaint and cute today but comes off dated in a new film.
It seems like this movie is a sample of a dozen movies you have seen before. Everything is too predictable and it just never tries anything original or surprising. My wife and I were constantly guessing aloud the next line or the next scene and it's like we are psychic prophets or something... or it's like everything we've already seen before.

The plot was pretty standard for such films, and certainly won't blow your mind; but the cinematography and overall Character design was head and shoulders above the standard entry into various Capeman series. Every scene was visually stunning and the hero was likable while being vulnerable and impressively powerful at the same time adding some intrigue into the action scenes. Where this film really shines is that its focal point is an entirely different type of hero with an entirely new setting, and introduces a new society that has a completely foreign culture to the established norms leaving the complete package of this film feeling so fresh for this genre. Personally, I felt the attempts at comedy fell a bit flat but then again comedy was never really DC's strong point. However DC did finally improve on adding color to a film instead of it being constant grim/dark scenes. In fact I'd wager this is among the most colorful Capeman movies ever made. Though it did retain a couple Grim/dark scenes which seems to be a nod to longtime DC fanboys. I found the mix of color and Grim/dark to be near perfect in this film. All in all, I found myself entertained throughout the entire film and even intrigued in potential sequels and tie-ins for this character in future projects. This film is not a perfect 10 for two reasons. 1. Comedy was a bit lame 2. DC's pace is still too fast for me; they create really beautiful scenes and then rush through them so quickly, its a real shame sometimes. Expand

Talking to fish? Riding around on giant seahorses? No wonder nobody takes him seriously. Therein lies the key to this film's success. Aquaman will never truly be seen as a dark, serious character like Batman. That's just not who he is. Much like Thor in the MCU, Aquaman works best as a fun, cheesy, superhero who is also a total badass. Instead of trying to convince us that Aquaman should be taken seriously, James Wan embraces the absurdity of the character, and the result is totally bonkers movie that's just pure fun to watch. The film's script is weak, but makes up for it with eye-popping CGI spectacle and absolutely gorgeous visuals that remind me of Blade Runner: 2049. The cast is great, especially Jason Momoa, who looks like he's having an absolute blast throughout the movie. Amber Heard's Mera has some pretty sweet fight scenes, and Willem Dafoe gets the rare opportunity to play a good guy as Vulko. Despite being over 2 hours long, the movie feels fast-paced, mainly because it's just one big, fun ride.

For the DCEU, this is a HUGE step in the right direction.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There's a lot of worthy praise about this movie's visuals and action sequences. The movie really is stunning visually. Some incredible CGI, truly. That being said, that's about all that's praiseworthy about Aquaman. The character and plot development is either horribly rushed or sorely lacking. It really left me hurting for more. Not in a good way. A few of the one-liners made me chuckle, but most made me cringe or groan. The dialogue is poor and the story seems hastily patched together amidst a deluge of action scenes. Excellent action, but too much frosting on very little cake makes for a poor experience.

Honestly I was most disappointed because of the incredible potential of this material. Wan really showed incredible imagination, but he just crammed way too much into one movie. The incredible potential for Atlantis world-building is clearly there, but it's just blasted through at such a wastefully fast pace. There's enough content for three movies crammed into a span of two and a half hours...

Picture this: (SPOILERS ahead) The first film could have simply introduced Aquaman and Black Manta (btw, his helmut looked really dumb, haha), two origin stories, as the core of the film. This would allow more time for proper character and plot development. Glimpses of the Atlantis culture could be included, Mera's character could begin investigating this half-breed, assisting Aquaman with his battle against Black Manta, and the end of the film would tease the unrest of the seven kingdoms.

Film two: the war of the seven kingdoms begins. Aquaman is not crowned king yet, but still plays a vital role in protecting the surface-dwelling world. Perhaps Orm remains prince (a minor antagonist) and his father, still alive, is the primary antagonist that stirs conflict. This allows so much more time for world-building and character development for these amazing seven kingdoms. Orm could even assist Aquaman only to gain the throne from his father.

Potential film three: Orm becomes the main antagonist after the defeat of his father and stirs conflict again in the seven kingdoms. Aquaman journeys to the trench to discover his mother, claim the trident, and become king, ending the conflict, defeating Orm, and bringing peace to Atlantis.

This is all just spitballing, but my point is that this movie covered WAY too much content in one sitting. Such a waste. So much potential. So much imagination, just horribly paced. I had no TIME to really digest or appreciate anything, since everything was flying by me at the speed of light. Justice League suffered from the same issue: trying to accomplish too much in one film.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Wow the critic reviews are horrible! What happened!? I thought the movie was good, no? Perhaps the best DC CU movie, just as good as Wonder Woman.
Lets start from start, good introduction to character, fighting scenes were fun. Movie has many funny moments too. Next, childhood, I wish I saw more of it actually. The villain (back manata) was nice sub-villain too, not the usual comic book "i am bad and i die in the end after lengthy fight" type villain. Mother being alive was kind of foreshadowing, but I was still happy to see it be.
Underground Atlantis felt like TRON underwater, which was awesome. Cast is good! There was an underwater tornado part which was very epileptic, I dont suffer from it but even to me it was unpleasant. The big snake thing talking was kind of confusing in the beginning, the sound and surroundings did not match well, but in the end it was ok. Overall, fun and nice movie 9/10

The reason all the dumb stuff worked for me was because that's what it was trying to be. And Jason Momoa made it work. He was just kind of being himself. And normally these movies don't work because they go too heavy with the CGI and not enough on story and dialogue. But this might be the best looking movie I have ever seen. All the scenes underwater looked incredible. And I loved the trident fights. This movie is entertaining and a lot of fun. And it does have characters with a lot of history and background. That helps elevate the story. If you are going to make a superhero movie more about action and CGI then make it incredible. That's what they did here. Expand

Aquaman suprised me at first, but it has the wrong priorities.

First of all, the world is beautiful. The movie has some great shots of earth and Atlantis has a great and bright color scheme. The costumes and vehicles look rather silly though. When I saw very serious looking men on giant seahorses, I could not stop myself from laughing all the time. The hat of Ocean Master, which he wears at the end of the flick, is also very weird looking. I thought the world was very creative and fascinating, but my thought about the creativeness changed when I did my research. I have never read any DC comic, so I did not know much about the world of Aquaman. It turned out all the things I thought were creative, were already made in the comics.

The story of Aquaman is bad. The start is very good, but too short for the quality it has. The flick is obviously based on the legend of king Arthur, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but it makes the plot predictable
The movie focusses on the wrong things, according to me. The beginning is far too good for the time it has in the movie. Black Manta is a very interresting character, so it is a pitty he is pushed to the side and the relationship between Arthur (Aquaman) and Mera only conclude in cliché moments.
My number one problem with this movie is that every time something interesting is happening, an explosion occurs and a villian ruins it with an action scene. This happens almost all the time in the middle of the flick, but not at the end. That is because the end is all action and no emotion whatsoever.

The last thing I want to mention are the numerous spoilers in the promotianal campaign. The literal ending is on the poster and in the trailers. All of this results in a very predictable movie which pays too much attention to the wrong aspects with a beautiful world and silly costumes.

Aquaman pulls off the visual aspect. Emotionally it's a mixed bag, many scenes were well done, but there were a few that felt like pure filler. I hear some people don't like the soundtrack, but I enjoyed it very much (for the most part), it's different from other superhero movies, and I think it was an excellent choice. Intellectually the movie barely hits surface level, there's not really anything to gain there. It certainly isn't revolutionary in any way, although I say that with an asterisk, because in recent years many movies have started to show great disrespect for the classic good versus evil story arc, as if it was to be avoided, as if cliché was a bad thing, as if exaggerated power and beauty was to be contempted rather than adored and loved, and extreme villainy was too simplistic. Aquaman doesn't care about that, it takes a page from LotR and fully embraces the heorism and villainousness, the strength and the weakness of its characters, and the design and lighting assist this by going hard with the clichés. I haven't seen such pure adoration for beauty and power to this extent on screen in many years. I've been missing it, and I want more of it, now more than ever. This doesn't mean there are no moral gray areas, there certainly are a few. Just don't expect a deeper look into the nature of man.
So overall I consider it a visually stunning, enjoyable ride. Aquaman knows what kind of movie it's supposed to be and it presents itself very well. I consider it one of the better superhero movies of recent years, and one of the better movies in general. It's a textbook example for what I consider simply a good, enjoyable movie that I won't forget anytime soon. It's a bit like a modern Titanic, but with more emphasis on epicness and visuals and less on emotion.

Jason Momoa stated in an interview that there's only a little bit of preachiness in Aquaman, not so much that it could become annoying. I fully agree with him, and I appreciate that James Wan understands this, too. A movie is supposed to be nothing more than a movie, even if it makes the audience think, it's never supposed to pull us right back into reality. If we think about any of the implications of the in-movie commentary, then we're supposed to think about it within the realm of that movie. Only when the end credits roll is when the magic should be allowed to fade. And I, for one, had this exact experience. I felt like a kid in a theater again.

Aquaman is directed by James Wan, his very first superhero movie, screenplay by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and Will Beall, and starring Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Patrick Wilson and Nicole Kidman.
Story by Geoff Johns, James Wan and will Beall... The film reveals the origin story of half-human, half-Atlantean Arthur Curry and takes him on the journey of his lifetime--one that will not only force him to face who he really is, but to discover if he is worthy of who he was born to be a king.

This review will be spoiler-free, because I don't want to ruin this movie to you, guys...
I really don't know where to start, guys... Let's start with the direction.. James Wan's first superhero movie as its director is Aquaman, so I was concerned to see him failing, because we're used to see him mostly in horror movie like The Conjuring Universe, Saw and Insidious.. so yeah I didn't expect him to make a great job with the direction, in fact I was blown away of his amazing job with this movie, especially with the action scenes, he made every single scene epic, and breathtaking, thanks also goes to the crew of the CGI which I'm gonna talk about later on. James Wan did some mistakes with the direction as I predicted when I first heard that he will direct this movie, he actually tried to make some jump-scares in this movie, for no reason I don't get why.. let me tell you how... Most of the NORMAL scenes, when people are talking or doing anything but fighting, especially when they are in a house or somewhere closed, they always ended with someone exploding the wall or anything unexpectedly just like horror movies, and that's what I was afraid of! That's my only issue with the direction.

Let's move to the flawless CGI!!!! Every scene of the underwater world was was well made, by the CGI and the direction as I said above, it's amazing.. I can't find any proper word to say about it.. it was fascinating, i was super-entertained by how well done the CGI of this movie is!! They weren't afraid of making that much of Atlantis, like Godzilla did, I don't want to compare movies, but Godzilla was too afraid to make that much of scenes of him, but Aquaman took that risk and they nailed it!

Also the performances were very talented by everyone, Jason Momoa is amazing as Aquaman as he was in Justice League, and maybe more! Amber Heard is badass as Mera... Patrick Wilson is an amazing villain and I loved him as King Orm and I can't wait to see him again in other DC movies!

Let's move to my biggest flaw of this movie, and it's a random choice.. I don't know but this might have some spoiler for you... There's a scene when Aquaman and Mera were fighting CREATURES in a boat, and in this scene Arthur AKA Aquaman said a very random line, that these creatures are from the bottom of the sea so they fear the light, so he opens a random box to find a LIGHT SOURCE and he scares the creatures with it... This scene was so random, the line of Aquaman can be forgiven, but the random choice can't be!
I tried to make it spoiler-free as I could and I highlighted some keywords, which who watched the movie will understand what I'm talking about.

So for those who want to know if Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse is better than Aquaman or not, my opinion is yeah, it's better than Aquaman, but it also depends on what you want to see, if you wanna see an epic, old fashioned way superhero movie, so Aquaman is your movie, but if you wanna see a surprising and with a very powerful story, so Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse is your movie. Anyways I really loved Aquaman and I'm gonna give it an A!

This movie was good, easily the best since the Dark Knight Rises, James Wan and Jason Mamoa saved the DCEU. Critics called this movie out for cliche, but never mentioned it once when talking about Black Panther. Black Panther ended with a 97%, and Aquaman a 64%. This movie had much better special effects and cgi compared to Black Panther, but Panther never got criticized for the bad cgi. Also the action in Aquaman was much better than Black Panther, but never got praise. Black Panther was literally the Lion King, but the critics just had to hate on DC. I'm not defending DC's movies here, I mean they were pretty bad the last few years, and I feel the critics/audience just doesn't want to see DC do good. Expand

Callmeyourkingsobeit: The Movie.

It's admittedly overlong because it's overstuffed with too many story-lines, and a long introductory opening sequence that could, and should, have easily been omitted; as there are many better-executed flashbacks which are more than enough. Add to this the fact that the aforementioned opening sequence is filled with cringe-inducing moments, including those which concern the romantic aspect, which is, in my opinion, the only silly thing that didn't work in the movie.

That said, the movie is packed with thrilling, kinetic, and meticulously designed and choreographed action set-pieces, in which you really can follow the action and the liberated fight sequences buoyed by raucous deluge of dazzling array of visual effects. Replicating underwater movement, and offering exotic creatures and characters' outfits that contrast the deep blue sea with splashes of bright colors, James Wan did a tremendous job creating an underwater world that's a visual feast that's consistently boasting a visual feast for the eyes. I enjoyed the out-of-water action sequences more, they are better and more masterfully designed than those that take place underwater; but nothing can compete with the stunning free-flowing underwater action scenes from the visual standpoint.

Aside from Furious 7, Wan's filmography is strictly horror related, having launched franchises in his own right with Saw and The Conjuring. Here we can see that he still uses his background in horror to deliver some moments that have shocking and surprising value, and they are quite effective.

It's not hard to tell that the entire cast and crew went all out. Their dedication does not go unnoticed. All the cast did their best to give a strong comeback, considering that most of them once had a quite promising and auspicious career. As for Jason Momoa, he really shines as the titular superhero. His physical appearance suits the badass character that the DCEU wanted to make from the get-go. He looks and fights as if he is a WWE superstar! Amber Heard is great, and the chemistry between her Indiana Jonesian character, Mera and Momoa's Aquaman is electric and gripping. They make an awesome dynamic duo, and their sugary cheerful relationship made up for the nauseating, saccharine romance of Tom Curry and Queen Atlanna.

The two villains have quite compelling background and convincing motives. And each one's sub-plot never overshadows the other's. Also, Patrick Wilson and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II are pretty good.

Aquaman is An Extremely Cool and Bad-ass Epic Fantasy Adventure of Cheesiness! It's decidedly a step in the right direction for DC. I still think Wonder Woman is the best movie in their extended universe, so far; but Aquaman is now my personal favorite.

All hail the true King, James Wan!

I saw a lot of movies inside this one, from Finding Nemo, to The Shape of Water, even in the post-credit scene they gave us Titanic. And the soundtrack was out of place. It's a thank you, next for me. 6/10 for entertainment.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Aquaman is a fun superhero movie lighter in tone compared to the other DCEU movies. Its a fresh take on the king of atlantis with solid performances from the starcast especially from momoa and patrick wilson. The visuals are stunning , fight choreography exquiste, the suits of aquamna, mera, ocean master and black manta seems to have been ripped-off straight from the comics.A drawback to it would be that it contains too many cheesy dialogues which at times were even cringe worthy and also, some subplots were not given as much weight as they should have been. Nevertheless, the good outweigh the bad and you can easily forget about those little errors since the story itself compensate for it. James Wan has nailed it with his vision and direction and thanks to him, AQUAMAN would no longer be the joke he was once. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well.... I've had a lot of feelings about Aquaman before and after I saw it. When I first saw the trailer, I thought "Nah, this isn't going to be good." As the film kept getting more and more hyped up, I was actually getting more interested. Especially after it came out, because the reviews weren't too bad and people around me were saying great things about it. So, here's my perspective. And this is coming from someone who has not seen very many DC films. It was..okay. But, now that they have confirmed a sequel, I am interested in seeing it. I didn't like how the main plot was around his half brother's revenge. I was much more interested in the Black Manta, who is a huge part in the DC Universe, yet in only a small portion of this movie. When you're watching the beginning, it even makes you think that this will be what the movie is going to be all about. But of course, just like many movies are doing nowadays, they use this as a cheap cash grab to confirm a sequel. So yes, that is why I plan on seeing the second, since this villain was much more appealing. Another bummer for me was I didn't think this movie was very funny. Sure, it's more of an action/thriller than it is a comedy, but there were so many unfunny jokes made that I found myself rolling my eyes more than laughing. I love Jason Momoa, but he definitely had his moments with this. I also found Mara to be a pretty weak character, which really effected how I enjoyed the movie since she was a big part of it. I felt like there was nothing interested about her. In fact, I found her pretty boring. So, what did I like? Well, After about halfway through the movie where everything was pretty slow, it starts to pick up. Especially towards the end, this movie just looks fantastic. There are definitely some crappy CGI moments, but there are some awesome ones as well. Like I mentioned, I'm all in for the sequel, but that is mainly because of Black Manta. Without him, I honestly wouldn't have been interested. There are some tweaks they can work on, but I still see potential in this movie. Expand

The plot wasn't original, the pacing was offensive and the ending was a choice. Its not all lost I suppose, its big budget was evident even if it did take the form of cheap, unimpressive costumes, its CGI is no blade runner 2049 but it was enough to keep your eyes from wandering off screen which at times I wanted them to. Also aquamans mum must be great friends with the wasps mother in ant man because they have very similar life experiences being thought dead in a presumably unsurvivable location, not original, or interesting and thats me talking about the first time I saw this storyline. While I didn't totally buy the chemistry between Mera and Aquaman, Amber Heard and Jason Momoa bring charm to the roles that was really lacking with all of the other DCEU castings. The action has substantially improved with wide angles and no shaky cam CGI messes, which is one thing that had to improve in terms of filmmaking. One thing I really enjoyed about this movie was that this felt like an actual director was at the helm and the studio didn't come in and interfere halfway through production. One thing that this movie provides is a good starting blueprint for WB to how they need to handle their movies in the DCEU going forward. All they have to do is bring on confident directors, let them have control of how their movie gets made, and the studio just needs to back off and let the creative process go and allow the product of the film to be made. Aquaman was a fun action/comic book movie and puts the DCEU on the right track for the future, by no means the caliber of the better MCU movies, but a great place to go after seeing the fun a good director and creativity can bring to the table. So when I found out that they were giving him a movie I was skeptical, not only because of the source material, but because BvS had just come out and the future of the DCEU was looking iffy. Then, they brought James Wan on board and things were starting to look up. Then Justice League happened and all hopes sort of vanished. Now the movie is out and what do I make of Aquaman? It’s the best DCEU movie in regards to its villains and action. While Wonder Woman still holds her place near the top, Aquaman has swum towards the surface and shows what happens when you let a filmmaker—who loves the comics—do what they please with a license. Aquaman is funny, heartfelt, and (censored) insane. Jason Momoa is perfect as a surfer bro, hardcore Aquaman. Amber Heard does a good job herself as Mera. Patrick Wilson does kill it as Ocean Master. Nicole Kidman is…Nicole Kidman—she’s good in everything, except Batman. Willem Dafoe, Dolph Lundgren, and Temuera Morrison all give their A-Game here and supply a good supporting cast. But who I felt stands out is Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, who does a phenomenal job and should be commended for his work. Same with James Wan who through his directing and story, has steered the DCEU towards the path that it needs to go to. The action is insane, intense, and has a surprisingly amount of one-shot long takes with little shaky cam, so you can definitely see everything. Props to the cinematographer for puling it off. The music is also good and serves the movie. The CG is where the movie might take a hit. Considering how much is needed, the effects can be shoddy at some points and could take you out of the movie. I didn’t mind it as I was invested the whole time. The movie does also suffer from a few pacing issues and jokes that don’t land. The story itself is a bit iffy and predictable at times, but it does get the job done as Aquaman is an example of taking a character—a ridiculous character—giving him heart, and having fun with the world that he lives in. And this movie is that, it’s fun. I want to watch it, then watch it again, because it has such a high volume of rewatch ability. Is it a 10/10? No. But what it does have is the torch that will lead the way towards a better DCEU future. And I cannot wait for the sequel. Also Marry Poppins voices a Kraken. Expand

TL;DR - Great Story-line. So-So CGI. Way to many cliche's. Acting mostly sucks. Worth seeing, once.

First off, since I was a little squid Aquaman has always been my favorite superhero. I identified with the story-line and the ability to swim under water and talk to animals. From the original cartoons in the 60's, to the Patrick Duffy "Man from Atlantis" series in the 70's, to everything Justice League...I've seen everything Aquaman. So based on that alone, I knew the movie would entertain me, regardless. But they could have done so much better.

STORY-LINE (9/10): The story line is amazing, and that alone was worth watching the movie for. IMHO, the writer's did a great job there. It wasn't as deep as it could have gone, but it was more than enough for a first film. 9/10

CGI (6/10): While some of the CGI was pretty good, most of it seemed halfheartedly done - and very obvious. In my opinion, CGI should be seamless, preferably not even noticeable, and definitely not distracting. Almost every Facial CGI modification in this movie is "in-your-face" noticeable...and very distracting from the plot.

ACTING (5/10): While I like Jason Momoa as a person, and I had zero problem with him being Aquaman, he did not give his best performance here as an actor. Additionally, there were just WAY too many cliches in this film. Each time it happened, I was just thinking "was that really necessary? it did nothing but take away from the quality of the film.

So in summary, it's definitely worth seeing once for any Aquaman fan-boy...but I can't imagine wanting to watch this film a second time. Just not enough value there and the overall experience was MEH...

However, I can't say it's good, but some aspects of the movie are so bad and ridiculous they become funny and hilarious, that's why I'm giving this a positive rating because it kept me entertained.

The Good:
-Finally a DCEU movie that focuses on entertaining its audience and not on setting up ten thousand movies nor rushing twenty storylines in one movie. -It's silly and cheesy, with over-the-top acting and comic-book accurate suits that look ridiculous in live-action, but that's the point of the fun of this movie and doesn't take itself too seriously, which makes it better.

The Bad:
-Some CGI looked bad and most of the movie looks very over-saturated, just look at Amber Heard's red hair, in many scenes it looks so bright red it's awful.
-That cringeworthy cover of "Africa" by Toto from Pitbull, oh my God.

If this is the direction DC is going for with its Cinematic Universe, then i'm in. That's why Marvel movies are so beloved because even though they might not be good movies on their own, they are fun and entertaining, which is something that I hope DC keeps doing with their next movies.
