James Wan does his best to try and save this film from becoming another DCEU box office bomb.

The script for Aquaman is mediocre and brings nothing new to table. It's full of goofy humor and slapstick gags. The story for Aquaman feels like a mix between "Black Panther" and "Raiders Of The Lost Ark". The cast does everything they can with the given script, and you can tell everyone is having a very fun time on set and is truly happy to be a part of this film.

As for the character of Aquaman; Jason Mamoa really takes The Protector Of The Deep and makes it his own. He is full of energy and charisma, not to mention he just looks damn awesome on screen.

The realashionship between Arthur and Mera is very sweet, although their romance feels very out of place.

Patrick Wilson does a good job as always, and it's good to know James Wan always has place for him in his films.

The inclusion of Black Manta feels very forced, and his helmet looks like a bumbling Power Ranger villain. He would have worked much better as the antogonist for the sequel.

By far the crown jewel of Aquaman is its VFX and Costumes. The underwater sequence looks absolutely stunning and realistic, and the costume department manages to perfectly translate the costumes from Aquaman Lore from the page to the silver screen.

I was not expecting anything more than a little CGI eye candy, and the chance to look at Jason Momoa for a while. While it’s true that probably 50% or more of the movie is action sequences, and while it’s also true that the plot is little more than something to hang the action on, and that the dialog is pretty superficial, I have to admit that I sat wide eyed and riveted through every moment of this epic achievement in 3D visual splendor. Over and over again, I could not believe what I was being treated to. Again and again I found myself mouthing “holy s@#t” as another simply amazing visual unfolded. Though the action was completely over the top, it was so incredibly edited that it managed to be intimate and easy to follow, while being absolutely immense. I also enjoyed Nicole Kidman and the rest of the cast. Jason Momoa was epic. He may not win an Oscar for this role, but he was simply perfect. Bottom line, I was extremely surprised to find that I really enjoyed this movie - enough to write this review and advise others to go and enjoy it too. Expand

In the past few years, DC’s movies were more like a hit and miss after Justice League’s under-performance with fans and critics divided over the future of the DCEU.
But with Aquaman, DC fans gained some hope after all. AQUAMAN is a fun thrilling ride, with fascinating visuals and great action sequences (the chase scene) that worked pretty well with the camera work!

James Wan widens the DCEU with a new underwater world to explore some great characters we see for the first time on the big screen. Jason Momoa’s take on Arthur Curry was bad-ass and he kicks ass with a charismatic touch of his own proving he’s worthy of the role. As for Amber Heard, she gives an excellent performance as Queen Mera and her chemistry with Jason was really compelling. Would’ve liked to see more of Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s Black Manta as he was a bit underused and his story didn’t really serve the main plot of the movie, but still looking forward to see more of him as Aquaman’s archenemy in the near future.

The writing of this movie was a lot of the time clunky and some of the dialogue sounded too cheesy. Plus, the tone of the movie was super light-hearted and it’s very clear that James Wan tried to make it different than previous movies and drove away from the usual dark tone. A lot of the comedy one-liners didn’t land and were a bit forced.

The score of the movie is pretty good but the use of some pop songs was really buggy, out of place, and should’ve been avoided given that the main theme of the movie is spectacular. Thanks to Rupert Gregson-Williams!

The horror aspect of James Wan was so satisfying and was pretty much clear based on his former experience with the horror genre, pushing the visuals to new a level in this epic underwater opera!
Unfortunately, the final act of the movie was filled with battle scenes that were all over the place and too noisy with too much going on underwater.

Out of the movies I’ve seen from the series, Batman v Superman, Suicide Squad, and Justice League, I have not liked a single one of them. In fact, they just might be up there with the worst movies I have ever seen. However, (I can’t believe I’m saying this) I really enjoyed Aquaman. Yeah. The movies starring some of the most iconic and beloved DC characters? Hated them. The movie based on arguably the stupidest DC character that is pretty much only popular because he’s seen as a joke? I really liked it! It had fun action, a brisk pace that took you all over the place, a light tone that didn’t take itself too seriously, enjoyable characters to go on an adventure with, and breathtakingly beautiful colours. Imagine that, a DC movie that’s bright and colourful! I’m a sucker for neon and bioluminescence especially (Avatar, Tron Legacy, and Blade Runner are some of my favourite movies for that aspect alone), and this movie has a lot of that! Some of the CGI looked a little phoney at times, almost like a video game cutscene, but that just added to the charm in my opinion. Another thing I really appreciated was the fact that it was a stand-alone film with little to no connection to the other movies. There’s a loose connection to Wonder Woman and a reference to Justice League, but that’s it. This is the kind of movie they should’ve been making for the DCEU from the beginning, I’m glad that they seem to be going in this lighter, more fun direction rather than the dark, convoluted Zack Snyder stuff. I highly recommend this movie if you just want to have a good time. It’s The Little Mermaid meets Indiana Jones meets Black Panther featuring battle sharks, crab people, and dinosaurs! Doesn’t that sound awesome? If it does, you’ll like this movie a lot, I think! I’m gonna go watch Wonder Woman and Shazam now. Maybe I do like the DCEU after all! Expand

Aquaman is the second DCU movie to hit it out of the park. Though, I concede that Wonder Woman still had the stronger story.

The whole thing looks great. The film goes full balls-to-the wall in creating the entire fictional kingdom of Atlantis and several other underwater kingdoms and locations. The whole thing has an 80's fantasy/sci-fi/adventure feel to it. A lot of work went into the details on this. The movie includes one dress and one visual sequence (you'll know it when you see it) that really catch your eye. The fight sequences, including a full-scale battle, really nail it. I also applaud the movie's effort to bring Black Manta and Ocean Master's outfits to life without majorly reworking the designs.

The script does a fair job of balancing drama and comedy. Jason Momoa remains utterly cool and charming as the lead. He and Amber Heard as Mera have good chemistry. Credit should also be given to Patrick Wilson as Ocean Master. He is a complete jerk in this, but you always understand where he is coming from and why he feels justified in what he is doing.

The movie does try to cram in a little too much. We get Aquaman's backstory, Atlantis' surprisingly in-depth backstory, all three of Aquaman's best known villains, and practically every major supporting character except Aqualad. You do tend to get thrown from one scene to the next, and I wished Mera and Aquaman had a little more time to build their relationship. Still, I do give director James Wan credit for trying to get in as much of the Aquaman mythos as possible. There is a lot of thought put into this world. The script is busy, but it isn't confusing or particularly jerky. You are given all the info. needed, and the flashbacks about Aquaman's origin are really well integrated and don't overstay their welcome.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I left the cinema renewing something i believe was lost. I was actually happy of watching the movie. Was beyond killing time and i would happily watched again.
First the obvious. The effects are great, just like any big movie this times, but acuaman wont dissapoint at all here.
Second the characters. Acuaman is a believable badass who has the courage of being nice when needed. And thankfully avoid the desperation for trying to be cool or funny that it so common. The villain is actually a 3d character and not a crazy tyrant with a very dumb reason, more vergil like and less generic (steppenwolf). The star here is the princess, a strong female character that is not only bearable to watch but also a pleasure to see. Probably stronger and smarter than aquaman but with the extremely rare power of not being annoying and without the so common need of pestering anyone everytime by telling them how awesome she is (hey wonder woman) .She is actually supportive and nice. Please DC keep going, in a world when we barely stand Marvel we are in need of a true hero.

"Permission to come aboard"

Permission granted.

While not best superhero movies of all time, but for DC shake, it's the best movie behind 'Wonder Women'.

Jason Momoa and Amber Heard are both enjoyable and bring a dynamic chemistry into their characters. They honestly carry this movie.

James Wan direction is the strongest part of the movie. The action scenes is thrilling and exciting with the camera sweeping across the actions scenes - never missing a punch, kick, and blast. Wan proves his one of the best filmmakers of all time, not just for horror, but for action as well.

Patrick Wilson plays an interesting villain with a sibling rivalry with Aquaman, but Wilson makes him stand out from being bland. Also, Willem Dafoe riding a shark is something special.

Some of the CGI looked a bit noticeable, especially during the under water scenes with the characters talking or moving about. However, the rest of the movie itself is colorful and brings Atlanteans alive.

Sure, the same can be said about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, especially the destruction aspect, but at least with most of the Marvel films, we've been able to closely follow, grow, and develop with most of those characters over the past decade, as it seems as though the filmmakers of those films actually take the time to further flesh out their heroes and characters and develop interesting themes that take precedence over the visuals and destruction aspect (such as Black Panther for example.) As expected, for the most part, this film continued DC's streak of action-heavy yet ultimately underwhelming and disappointing films, as it follows so many familiar tropes from previous superhero movies (the brother rivalry in this reminded me all too much of Thor, and fighting for the throne of course reminded me too much of Black Panther from earlier just this year.) And yes, there is plenty of destruction, but I will admit that the visuals in this were remarkably impressive and colorful most of the time, which I found somewhat refreshing, considering how lackluster I found Justice League's effects to be from last year. Jason Momoa's also a perfect fit for the titular hero, and brings great fun and humor to the character throughout. Overall, there's fun to be had at times in addition to great visuals and a worthwhile performance from Momoa and the rest of the cast, but nothing really new or inspired in terms of story, which for me is to be expected of DC movies lately unfortunately. To sum it up in a sentence: fun but forgettable, just like all the DC movies lately. Expand

While Infinity was big and spectacular it required prior knowledge, this movie didn't require such and explained everything perfectly. The action scenes were fantastic, and the CG was good too. The characters felt fleshed out, and so did the story. The visuals are beautiful, and the soundtrack is just the icing on top with orchestral and synth arrangements with plenty of licensed tracks too. This movie really is for everyone because it isn't overly superhero-y, which is fine. If James Wan wants to direct the next Guardians movie, let him. Overall the movie was fantastic, an easy 10/10. The acting kept ripping me out of the narrative as did the over the top sound design.  Someone care to explain how an 8 inch dagger being removed from a small belt sheath sounds like a long sword being removed from a metal scabbard?  I mean really...Not only was the acting over the top and cheesy but the sound effects matched.   I haven't seen this bad of sound design since the late 90s Power Rangers when I was young.  Speaking of Power Rangers, Black Manta's suit.  Seriously, right up there with Apocalypse from that horrible X-Men movie.  I know Black Manta looks a bit silly in the comics but come on, a tweenage cosplayer could have made something that looked better. And while I'm at it would someone like to explain exactly how humanity hasn't noticed a Tron like Gungan city with "highways" and vehicles and super powered laser cannons around the outside walls.

Im sorry but this movie just has so many technical and narrative problems that it can be hard to watch most of the time.

Even my lowered, cautious expectations were dissapointed here.  I rank this DC movie almost in a tie with Green Lantern.  Give it a pass.  It's not worth the cost of admission, much less the fuel to drive to a theater or snacks.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As an avid movie goer I am insulted that the studio even put this movie out. There is absolutely no way the director and producer have ever seen an actual movie and Jason Mamoa should be ashamed to have put his name on this. I walked out of the theater after 30 minutes and told the manager they have a duty to not allow guests to spend their money on this movie. As to what caused me to walk out? Here's some of the details...... SPOILERS AHEAD.....
The movie begins as an awful throwback to Falcon Crest type soap format with Nicole Kidman CGI'd to look young and as hard as it was to make it through this first part I was hoping the action would at least make up for it. Not the case. Jump to Aquaman jumping on board a Russian (yes Russian) submarine and the scene couldn't have been more of an intro to a gay porn where he lands, swishes his hair back, close up on face, steam in the back ground, and looks at the camera and says "Permission to come aboard?"

Seriously? The following scenes where the actors are trying to fight/shoot/struggle at whatever the antogonist is were painful to watch. Broken editing, poor camera angles, poor sound editing and music. Its just the worst. When I found myself wishing I was watching a Nicolas Cage movie that was when I told my girlfriend we're walking out. This is one of the worst films I have seen since Baywatch and its even worse than that.

How he didn't break out in laughter with every sentence is testimony to his acting ability so good on him. The girls will get a perv so there is that. Nicole Kidman was as wooden as the boat she sailed on in dead calm. Im sure many will love it however, there is no accounting for taste. Temuera Morrison aka Jake the Mus should go back to the pub! The gorgeous visuals, copious action sequences and heavy use of exposition as well as cramming years of mythology into one film are used to prop up a thinly developed plot and paper thin characters who never grow beyond the surface. Wasting away potentially great storylines and fees like a haphazard patchwork of various films with no identity of what kind of film it wants to be. I haven’t seen a film this haphazardly slapped together since Thor:The Dark World. All Aquaman had to do with craft a plot that was unique much like its underwater setting yet it was the most generic plot I’ve seen in a while. The clunky dialogue didn’t help matters so its a film that looks fantastic but its core is weak.

DC sold fans a lemon.

I tell you: We have not seen such a creative fantasy script and VFX since the last JJ film. While James and JJ both lack the strong moral compass of Spielberg, excepting this, Aquaman is as creative a fantasy script and VFX as you could hope for. I come from seeing close to every fantasy movie and superhero movie made. I first liked James Wan on the X-Files and have followed his horror films from a distance. James brings a great deal together here. He’s working with well-worn tropes but manages again and again to make them seem fresh. Thor: Ragnarok is the appropriate comparison here, another crowd please, another comic book come to life successfully. Aquaman has more weight and depth than Thor:R due to its hero's journey arc. I see critics criticizing Aquaman for clashes of tone. When multiple critics say this and I do not, I always wonder how many were simply looking between the screen and checking their emails on their smart phone. I went to art school and have written 44 books where shadings of tone visually and verbally are crucial. Aquaman is a masterful blending of goofy and serious moods. Even an octopus playing multiple drums fits in. A lesser presence in one or more of the main roles could have sunk this effort. The plot point shuffling of trident fight one ending inconclusively leading to a whole middle section hero's journey to get to the second and final trident fight, is amazing effective to keep the narrative afloat. The drone rooftop chase footage is used to great effect. In a behind the scenes YouTube, James says at a superhero movie the audience should feel like they are learning something from the characters; and, that they inspire us to see our own capacity to do good in our own lives. Aquaman does 9/10 on both of these. Expand

ThisA jeuvinile script that is filled with tropes and cliches and ingores continuity regularly. The movie is littered with very sketchy CGI surrounded by amazing CGI that just bring the former into high contrast and makes you wonder why. This is from the Michael Bay school of thought, where FX and CGI are supposed to carry the shortfalls in story and writing. I can only assume many reviewers were intoxicated or know someone that worked on this film. Their rationalization that people do not like it is due to a label, in this case Marvel, has anything to do with how well the movie entertains. Almost as good as the morons suggesting you "ignore reviews" not realizing they put that in a review, claiming this entire site is meaningless. 5.5/10 Expand

This is apparently DC's attempt to mix together "Thor" and "Black Panther," set the story underwater, and see what floats to the surface. It arrives belly-up.

"Bloated" is the first word that comes to mind, with no pun intended. The first 1-1/2 hours of this film could have been shortened to 1/2 hour and left the rest for a story about Aquaman battling Black Manta, who is the coolest thing (maybe the only cool thing) here. The story takes forever to get going and makes so many side trips along the way that the central conflict is forgotten, and that's not good for a story.

A few random complaints:

The undersea scenes are a mass of special effects adding up to a larger blue-purple special effect. It's like watching an attempt to replicate the original TRON, only more expensively.

Nicole Kidman's plastic surgery is on full display. It's hard to believe what people will do to their own bodies.

The female lead's hair looks awful--don't these creative geniuses realize that real red hair is more than just one flat red color? How much did this hair design cost?

Aquaman's emotional transition from guzzling brawler to stand-up leader of the fish folks happened somewhere, but I didn't notice it until he basically stated this in his final narration.

He and fish-girl have no charisma whatsoever. She is so off-the-shelf it's hard to understand how someone thought this was a memorable character.

After about 2 hours of this film it seemed to me the crowd in the theatre was just numb. As many millions of dollars as we saw splashing and exploding on the screen, there was very little to watch, because we were just waiting for the splashes and explosions to end in a big splash and explosion.

If you like this version of Aquaman's hunky-dopey-but-sincere (and-all-but-original) schtick I suppose you could get into it. Personally, I was reminded of other massive-budget bores like Dune, not to mention most of DC's superhero offerings.

By the way, I was looking forward to seeing this movie, thinking DC had a chance to do something other than make another grim, black-leather version of one of their heroes. It wasn't like that, but it was bad in a different way. Maybe this is progress.

DC's own cinematic universe is failing already since 2013's Man of Steel and Aquaman continues this neverending trend unfortunately. No matter how "good" these movies are, they are all over the place causing the audience to become muddled at what happens next. There's a reason why Marvel sets up the whole cinematic universe just correctly despite how many movies there are in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They tell a story about what's going to happen next and what should we expect from it. On the other hand, DC's cinematic universe is way too muddling. We go from Superman to already Batman and Superman "fighting" each other to Suicide Squad to Wonder Woman to the Justice League to Aquaman. If you think about it, this lineup of movies makes absolutely no sense whatsoever and even Aquaman couldn't save his own cinematic universe from being a muddling mess. If they're desperate to fix their own universe, then the correct way to put this out in words is to start it all over again but for now, Aquaman will remain with a plot that will literally confuse people that are new to the DC Extended Universe and people that are into DC movies in general. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Theme #1: Racial purity Aquaman is a movie about a reluctant multi(racial)-species half-breed that becomes king of both worlds. This movie goes to great lengths to contrast his bastard un pure blood over the pure (white) Atlatean villain. the villain (his half brother) did nothing wrong. the humans in this movie initiated aggression against the sea peoples by polluting, killing marine life, and dumping massive amounts of trash into the sea. i agreed whole heartedly when they responded by throwing trash back onto the shores and wrecking destroyer ships.

Theme #2: Nationalism vs Globalism
Mera asked Curry, “What could be greater than a king? A hero. A king fights for his nation. A hero fights for everyone.” kings dont want to control the world. (heros)authoritarians think that they know whats best for the whole world and that they can represent all cultures. if the atlanteans kill the humans that preserves more diversity in the sea between the crab people, the mutants, the atlanteans, and the fish people. there is no indication that humans will behave any differently once aquaman becomes king. not all cultures can live in harmony for example fundamentalist islam and the west. we are diametrically opposed to each other. sometimes its black and white and the women of the movie really poison the mens minds against what is right for their people. Theme #3: Feminism is doo-doo
Aquaman is a bumbling feminist wet dream idiot that needs to be told by his girlfriend when to fight, when to kiss, and where to **** i hoped for kal drogo and got loyd from dumb & dumber. the worst part is he has no clear goal and no self confidence. he unironically attains the trident by being unworthy of the trident.

Mera defects to the humans side for no apparent reason. sure forced marriage sucks but was it really worth it at the expense of thousands of marine animals, atlanteans, crab people, creature from the black lagoon peoples lives? she chooses her out group over her in group on the assumption that humans will allow their way of life to be drastically changed? are they going to do a wakanda and start sharing tech with humans? how do they prevent them from weaponizing their tech? how are you going to stop them from polluting the world and killing your whales???? thats a huge plot hole. The movie exhibits an altruistic mother instinct gone wild. plot holes
a huge plot hole is the human's lack of any military response.
why does manta know about atlantis and how to meet them yet the navy, cia, or FBI dont have any clue about their whereabouts? if his brother didnt want anyone to know that he was trying to kill aquaman why did he send the royal elite to kill him in sicily in their signature suits??? why send a weak human that needs a suit to battle arthur? who cares if he killed his dad. he already lost to him once in combat.
why is it that a man that has "trained his whole life to be an warrior" has never encountered the super fast trident spin technique? mantas character arc was ill formed and should have been scrapped. totally pointless and added nothing to the movie. he looked ridiculous like baxter from turtles. 5/10 pretty movie, good casting, and bad plot
i havent liked a dc movie this much since batman returns.

Don't let the title deceive you. Aquaman is not a hero movie, but is a sci-fi/fantasy adventure movie like Percy Jackson, where heroes have to travel from places to places according to clues to claim the magical item.

Pros:
+ Nice exploration of Atlantis' background
+ Good chemistry between Arthur and Mera
+ Variety of environments
+ Easy to consume as a family movie
+ Beautiful visual style

Cons:
- Too long
- The ending of the heroes quest didn't yield much satisfaction
- Felt flat in several parts

Aquaman's story is suit to be in either a multi-part format or as a series of comic books, instead of a single one film. It felt like a fun ride that never get your emotion high enough and flat at some points, because they tried to cram the movie too many stuff, which result in a movie that is too long for its format and heroes quest that doesn't yield satisfaction at all.

Almost everything in the film was told in a very obvious way without a room for any interpretation, as it's aimed at broader audiences.

Here come the good parts

The movie isn't without its merit, as Mera and Arthur's interaction are fun to watch. Both banter from time to time (almost constantly).

Arthur's character development also felt developed progressively. Especially when compared to a man whom care nothing about the world from JLA (which is justified in his background exploration).

While 'Aquaman' is creatively better than previous DCEU efforts, it still falls under the trap of having to introduce a rather obscure character into the mainstream movie world of today. The movie falls under the weight of endless expositionWhile 'Aquaman' is creatively better than previous DCEU efforts, it still falls under the trap of having to introduce a rather obscure character into the mainstream movie world of today. The movie falls under the weight of endless exposition and countless scenes of characters travelling from one location to the other in order to retrieve some important piece of information. Jason Momoa plays Arthur Curry, and we see how his parents first met. His father, Thomas (Temuera Morrison) is a lighthouse keeper who, one day, stumbles across a strange woman who goes by Atlanna of Atlantis (Nicole Kidman), and they both fall in love. We see a montage of the two of them living happily with each other and even giving birth to their first child, a boy who they named Arthur and we also get to see him grow up. Unfortunately, that happiness was never meant to last as she is forced to leave her family to return to Atlantis leaving Arthur to be raised solely by his father. Growing up, we see that Arthur has the ability to talk to fish as he is a half Atlanta and human at the same time. It seems that things are not so peaceful underneath the surface as Ocean Master Orm (Patrick Wilson) who is the half-brother of Arthur, wages war against him because of his half-human side and blames him for the reason for their mother's exile, and he threatens to take the throne. Arthur is then visited by Mera (Amber Heard) who warns him about his brother's evil ways and Arthur is reluctant and uninterested. Though, he soon realizes that this is the only way to stop this war between the sea and land. Directed by James Wan ('Insidious' and 'Furious 7'), the movie does do a good job at taking this character and placing him into a subversive style of action and even self-aware comedy. The movie does acknowledge its silliness and embraces it rather well, and the cast do a terrific job at keeping your attention. The main issue lies within the screenplay where it is filled with lengthy exposition scenes. Characters do nothing but fully explain paragraphs of information to other characters to get a better understanding of something. We - as an audience - are not shown anything, we are just told again and again what some things are and everything is spelled out for us, as if these characters are reading Wikipedia articles. There is also the issue with the run-time along with the content of the film. Clocking in at 143 minutes, the movie is stuffed with so much material that one or two things could easily have been saved for the sequel. The action scenes are also extremely stylistic like it's a video game. Wan's camerawork has so much effort put into it, it almost serves as a distraction from all the exposition-heavy dialogue. As said before, 'Aquaman' is still a step in the right direction for the DCEU, but maybe Wan needs to tone down the heavy camerawork and maybe the writers should find a way to handle backstories without having a character stand in the foreground of the scene and spell it out for us. The film is corny and has no subtlety. The pacing is poor.Any humour is poorly timed and executed.
Possibly supposed to be comparable to the first Thor film but Marvel is so much better at it that it's embarrassing and makes this film look like an old Jason and the Argonauts or Sinbad film except it's 2018 and we expect more.

Thor: Underwater | The little mermen
Nice visual, simple story, gotta love Amber Heard's perfect waterproof makeup. Oh and R.I.P Snyder's Justice League. :(

Aquaman

Wan’s hypnotic dive on his first comic book action isn’t enchanting as it was anticipated to be.
Wan’s hypnotic dive on his first comic book action isn’t enchanting as it was anticipated to be. This spectacular visual galore is too busy on fabricating the genre with the hip and happening slick nature, that they sombre over the arena of basic requirements of storytelling. This renegade and savior theory is not only outdated, but the reasonings that fuels this drama is bourgeois dogmatic opinion to a people pleasing attitude. The writing is chalky and barely reflects upon any practicality among either the conversations or the flow of the storyline. It surely is visually stunning. The details are rich and wisely cracked up for you to be in awe of the technology.

But what’s fascinatingly dull is the action that takes place up front, it is questionable and at points bizarrely provocative. If the choreography is lethally created and performed than the background where it is set in, shucks away the leaps and kicks and empty punches. Amongst all these hokum, what grabs your attention is the ferocious pace and smooth camera work of Wan, a fine example of it would be the Sahara Desert chase scene that in its own gullible reasons – how should I put it – is pure fun. One of the major weakness of it is its antagonist.

If Wilson is set to embark upon a journey of killing a series of lead characters, then Kane’s obsession over satisfying his revenge is poorly executed. But let’s not rush our way in, the core relationship of Mamoa and Heard itself is so chocolaty that none of the tone is palpable enough to pamper it up. The forcibly imputed humor, the usual bickerings and stealing a gooey romantic moment amidst a war, everything pins down the narration below mediocrity.

Momoa in the lead, as a true heir is perpetually flat on expressing himself on screen. He may have the persona of a God and boy can he fight with his bare chest and raw behemoth figure, but as far as performance is concerned is not even skimming off the surface. Heard too is out of touch, there is so much that her character has to do but it is so belittled by the concept that it is basically left to be a series of fumbles. Talents like Dafoe, Kidman and Wilson are not only underused and misused by over chewing the emotions till it grows numb. It surely has its moments.

The sea creatures, tiny tactics that varies on the surface and underwater and the procedure where the trident is retreated back by its heir, especially the scene with the red flare, such detours every now and then gives us hope to hold on to. Wan has a language and a theme that he has come up with and is persistently aspiring for big moments. But to pull off such a large scale mythological tale is one thing and to stay true to it and match its wide range with narration is another, Wan lacks a better script. Aquaman is not the game changer that DC is looking for, especially not when the rules are this benign.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It was a fun movie. It was a bit disjointed with all of the scene jumps and different races of Atlanteans going on. I wanted to see more Black Manta personally than Ocean Master, but wait and see in the future. Expand

This movie is a perfect blend of diversity, classic heroism, and key original takes to get audience interested. Any liberal person would be celebrating the success of changing a blonde white man character into a tattoo'd polynesian. A progressive would be studying why this one worked but the other attempts failed. A power-mad regressive though... would attack the minority stars of the movies because they don't want to share the spotlight. Expand

I had to come up for air because you had no chance to think/reflect on anything before something else happened. All of the attempts at emotion were lost because a few seconds later something was being destroyed or a fight or a battle was happening. The deepest character in the entire movie was a giant squid/beast.

The people behind the film seem to have acknowledged Momoa's lack of emotional depth early on in production and banked big on just moving the story along while fitting in as much filler to prevent any sort of reason to rely on it.

People who gush about the movie really were just looking for something to distract them, and distract it does well. The rest of us will leave floundered at the shallowness of this film.

Orm as well as Black Manta are fantastic villains and are exhilarating to watch on screen, their presence brings an unrivaled tension that we haven't seen in the DCEU since Zod In Man Of Steel. The third act in this film is also phenomenal to behold with, Its worth seeing this film just for the CGI and visual effects alone. The negatives of the film for me involve some cringy/forced dialogue and music choices which take you out of the film, most noticeably in the second act during the Desert scenes. Expand

Aquaman's promotional material would have you believe that it's a big dumb dudebro superhero flick from 2003, but that's not entirely true.

I was ready to write it off 5 minutes in, but then a freaking Sigur Rós song started playing to beautiful imagery and something just clicked. From then on forward Aquaman got more and more enjoyable. It has a charming and playful spirit of adventure, packed with relentless action, set-pieces and locations (enough to fill an entire Tv season) and James Wan's inventive direction is wonderfully off the charts. All the visuals and Amber Heard in her white desert rose outfit are simply S T U N N I N G!

While the dialogue is atrocious and there's Pitbull's abominable Africa cover in the middle, I'm tempted to say that Aquaman has the potential to be this generation's The Mummy (1999).

Amber Heard couldn't take her part in the movie at all seriously I mean really the Little Mermaid who thought that was a good idea. Mera in Justice League was a better representation. Then the plot goes from the Little Mermaid to Harry Potter to Excalibur to Indiana Jones to Journey to the Center of the Earth to Clash of the Titans and a little bit of Lord of the Rings...What a mess zero imagination in the writing of the story was used, do they not have comic books to use for reference? Finally, What was the point of Black Manta? He was barely in the movie could have cut those sequences completely and no one would have noticed. Wonder Woman was a better movie and so was Justice League even though it used the lord of the rings plot at least it was consistent. Expand

Decent entry to the superhero genre, Wan gets the most out of the cast, amazing cgi and action. The movie hurtles along at breakneck speed and is a little over the top at times. It doesn't take itself too seriously and benefits from that unlike BvS.
