Intense and bloody. I mean, wow. The gore factor is very high in this one. It has a simple plot that is executed well. Definitely worth watching, unless you don't like blood, then definitely DO NOT watch this.

A bloody good time. Character development is a bit lacking in Apostle, but the directing is so full of visceral energy that its 2 hour running time flows by.

The story starts out somewhat slow for the first 40 min in its development of the overall setting and intent of the characters with great atmosphere and landscape visuals that set the initial tone. As the story starts unraveling, this film goes into some very unexpected territory with some intensely creepy aspects, and relentless mayhem unleashed. The finale wraps it up in supreme fashion, and the build up is definitely paid off in the end. Dan Stevens and the cast are all very passionate in their performances and the film seeps with authenticity because of it. The real standout are the immaculate visuals that capture some amazingly vicious moments in such brilliant manner. There are so many incredible shots throughout, and director Gareth Evans does not hold back on what he wants to portray on screen. The set design was also so realistic and immersive. Overall a very solid cult based horror. Expand

On top of the exploration of religion's potential for bringing out the dark side in people, there's a strong message about the raping and manipulation of mother nature. It's also a very graphic movie. Savagely violent and filled with truly disturbing moments. What separates Apostle from the aforementioned Darren Aronofsky film though is that it's nowhere near as repulsive. Despite being similar thematically and in content this simply isn't as vile in delivery. So it's able to maintain an edge and sense of shock value without being as abrasive. Essentially having it's cake and eating it too.

Gareth Evans makes a rather large departure here from the martial arts films that gave him his name. There are a few brief instances of the raw, calculated motion that can be seen in The Raid and its sequel, but one shouldn't start watching this with the expectation of a lot of action. This is a horror film of the slow-burn variety.

Naturally this means that things can kind of move at a snail's pace. There are gruesome moments, glimpses of the supernatural, a whole lot of mystery, and strong character work to hold your attention. So it's never boring, but there are some stretches where nothing all that exciting happens.

It plays out like Black Death with touches of Silent Hill and Saw. You get a masked brute that calls Pyramid Head to mind and rusty torture devices on top of all the cult stuff. It's an odd amalgam of horror styles to be sure, but Evans blends them all together in a way that feels natural.

Not everything plot-wise feels fully fleshed out. Mostly just the little stuff. Like the protagonist's addiction for example. It has no actual impact on anything as he easily kicks it with no problems. We already know he's a messed up guy from the moment he appears onscreen because Dan Stevens is just that good with body language, so it seems like a useless inclusion. The same can be said for most of his backstory actually.

Apostle might not be as seamless as the director's action movies, but it's no less gripping. A dark, violent movie with some beautiful amd surreal imagery. It has a lot to offer. Especially as an easier to swallow version of mother!.

With great cinematography, good acting performances, an interesting plot and a very nerve racking and suspenseful soundtrack, "Apostle" is well worth the watch if you are willing to give it 2 hours of your time.

Gareth Evans knows how to make a movie that holds you in suspense, it's not generic and has good plot twists.

The score is pretty weird and creepy which I liked.
The story was okay but it's gonna be the lat thing that I will remember from the movie. The ending was kinda stupid but i thought it did't ruin the movie.
I'm excited to see other movies from Gareth Evans (especially The Raid 1 + 2).
If you have got netflix and time on your hands, then i would definitely recommend this one

Τα The Raid το 2011 και The Raid 2 το 2014 ήταν δύο από τις καλύτερες βόλτες αδρεναλίνης που έχουμε κάνει ποτέ, αλλά φαίνεται ότι ο Evans είναι κάτι πολύ περισσότερο από …master των πολεμικών τεχνών.
Και σήμερα βάζει υποψηφιότητα για έναν από τους καλύτερους νέους σκηνοθέτες τρόμου!

While the premise of 'travelling to a secluded and primitive mini-society of people who operate in ways considered immoral by the majority of humanity' is done a fair bit (surprisingly), this movie offers its own unique take with its own mythology. The cast of characters is very engaging, in both acting and writing, and it's shocking to see what happens to some of them. I might have cried at one point? I'm actually not sure, but it felt like it. Of course, being a horror movie, it also offered some nice scares, mostly through the crazed cult members as usual but sometimes through some fairly stranger characters. The Grinder is an example of the latter. I have no idea who they were as it was never explained, and I won't spoil them by going into detail, but they were always so uncomfortable to see on screen (in a good way), and the unsolved mystery surrounding them helped greatly. If for nothing else, watch Apostle for The Grinder. They're so weird. Expand
