Intense and bloody. I mean, wow. The gore factor is very high in this one. It has a simple plot that is executed well. Definitely worth watching, unless you don't like blood, then definitely DO NOT watch this.

In every sense interesting but failed in execution. Apostle had the weapons to become an extraordinary horror film but settled for the basics.

The biggest problems are its narrative, the slowness of it and how much of its excessive duration leaves aside what is the most important element of the plot.

It seems incredible to me that the film opens the first 25 minutes with a mystery that looks impressive and then gets lost for almost an hour in fairly trivial elements.
The only thing we know about the protagonist is his lack of faith because of the torture he received while spreading his religion. Beyond that we never go deep into it and when you have a film with 130 minutes of lenght and you don't develop more your characters, then that's problematic and when the story that should advance gets relegated until the final part, well I've gotta say Apostle becomes a slow-burner that abuses too much of its potential.

It definitely has things that redeem it. The film looks spectacular, the cinematography is excellent as well as the staging and the music. From its cast we have the always reliable Michael Sheen who makes a character that dominates the screen at every moment. The protagonist Dan Stevens doesn't do anything memorable but his work is solid. Perhaps the weakest link is Lucy Boynton who never feels in sync. I applaud also that the director stayed away from the frontal horror approach, yet more agility in that area would have helped him a lot to the rhythm of the film.

People where expecting a lot from Gareth Evans after his praised films The Raid 1 and 2 and although I must say that I'm not disappointed, the film was far from my expectations but it's still a good film and iit's another solid addition to Netflix's catalog who apparently were keeping the strong titles for the end of the year.

A bloody good time. Character development is a bit lacking in Apostle, but the directing is so full of visceral energy that its 2 hour running time flows by.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Apostle started with good intention. You have great actors in this movie that deliver some greats performances. Sadly the story is slow paced. The movie fails to deliver anything tangible about the main character religion and his father relation. For someone that must save his sister, we certainly get almost nothing about the family and their links to one another. At the end you get some nice horror scene and actions, but nothing that scary. It's more like gory and violent. I give it 60% because I like the actors play, but the story wasn't very well executed. There was certainly potential in that movie. Expand

That is, until that plot-line is almost entirely abandoned for a whole host of other, much less interesting sub-plots. And its within this morass of mixed signals, muddled motivations, and head-scratching narrative decisions that the movie almost lost me. Still, the movie looks great and has a pretty great climax. I just couldn't get behind the movie spreading itself as thin as it ended up. Expand

The story starts out somewhat slow for the first 40 min in its development of the overall setting and intent of the characters with great atmosphere and landscape visuals that set the initial tone. As the story starts unraveling, this film goes into some very unexpected territory with some intensely creepy aspects, and relentless mayhem unleashed. The finale wraps it up in supreme fashion, and the build up is definitely paid off in the end. Dan Stevens and the cast are all very passionate in their performances and the film seeps with authenticity because of it. The real standout are the immaculate visuals that capture some amazingly vicious moments in such brilliant manner. There are so many incredible shots throughout, and director Gareth Evans does not hold back on what he wants to portray on screen. The set design was also so realistic and immersive. Overall a very solid cult based horror. Expand

It's alsoLike mother! only the director wasn't trying so hard to offend. On top of the exploration of religion's potential for bringing out the dark side in people, there's a strong message about the raping and manipulation of mother nature. It's also a very graphic movie. Savagely violent and filled with truly disturbing moments. What separates Apostle from the aforementioned Darren Aronofsky film though is that it's nowhere near as repulsive. Despite being similar thematically and in content this simply isn't as vile in delivery. So it's able to maintain an edge and sense of shock value without being as abrasive. Essentially having it's cake and eating it too.

Gareth Evans makes a rather large departure here from the martial arts films that gave him his name. There are a few brief instances of the raw, calculated motion that can be seen in The Raid and its sequel, but one shouldn't start watching this with the expectation of a lot of action. This is a horror film of the slow-burn variety.

Naturally this means that things can kind of move at a snail's pace. There are gruesome moments, glimpses of the supernatural, a whole lot of mystery, and strong character work to hold your attention. So it's never boring, but there are some stretches where nothing all that exciting happens.

It plays out like Black Death with touches of Silent Hill and Saw. You get a masked brute that calls Pyramid Head to mind and rusty torture devices on top of all the cult stuff. It's an odd amalgam of horror styles to be sure, but Evans blends them all together in a way that feels natural.

Not everything plot-wise feels fully fleshed out. Mostly just the little stuff. Like the protagonist's addiction for example. It has no actual impact on anything as he easily kicks it with no problems. We already know he's a messed up guy from the moment he appears onscreen because Dan Stevens is just that good with body language, so it seems like a useless inclusion. The same can be said for most of his backstory actually.

Apostle might not be as seamless as the director's action movies, but it's no less gripping. A dark, violent movie with some beautiful amd surreal imagery. It has a lot to offer. Especially as an easier to swallow version of mother!.

There was one shot where the camera spins aroundThis is not a fun film. It is nasty throughout. The production value is very high, it looks and sounds great. Letting it down is the concept, the bad writing and the boring arrogant directing. There was one shot where the camera spins around that must have been done on a technocrane which shows that they spent lots of money on it but it really takes away from the scene, they actually made that moment worse by using a distracting camera move purely for the sake of it. It really bothered me, if you use these cool bits of equipment then have a reason. Anyway the acting and casting are excellent. The genre is hugely inconsistent, it’s mostly a thriller but sometimes it veers heavily into either horror, torture porn and supernatural. The supernatural elements are never addressed or resolved, in a frustratingly similar way that May (2002) dealt with these elements. The ending would have been good if the build up had led to it but it didn’t. I also had a hard time believing that anyone would stay on the island and accept it as a way of life, especially if that had come from somewhere rather than being born into that life. They are complicit in the torture, unfazed, almost enjoying it. The graphic torture porn scenes didn't add anything to the film. They spend a long time setting up some characters and stories but sometimes they introduce a character only to kill them off in the same scene without any real engagement. Hugely disappointing waste of budget and talented cast and crew. Expand

There's a lot of unnecessary rubbish that happens that's irrelevant to the main plot line. I feel the plot idea itself had a lot of potential but half way through things just get bizzare and random. The ending is very unsatisfying as well. Gareth Evans has a lot of potential though and this is defintaley a film made my someone with a good imagination and a vision, even if it is all over the place this time around. I can see him making some seriously good films in the future. I kind of wish he'd have spent time on the Raid 3 rather than make this, but I respect the fact that he's trying out different things and this film demonstrates his versatility. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I liked the characters, scenery and acting. The first half of the movie is already seen, but well-done and always working. Recently, tons of movies and mostly videogames have done this. You arrive in a strange et secluded place, where everything is strange but peaceful. And the viewer knows at some point, it's gonna go full bloody gory rampage.
In this movie, well, it didn't, at least, not fully. When things start to go apesh*t, it was good, with a nice tension. THEN. THEN, for no reason, instead of going more crazy, the movie is somehow slowing, going in maaaany directions, to end in some anti-climactic way. I was kinda bothered by this. For more than one hour, I expected so much the bad guys to get rampaged by our hero, and it never really happens. This movie subverted my expectations. Not for the best, I'm afraid.
By the way, this film was rated 18+ on Netflix. Before seeing it, I even made a bet with myself to see if I could stand it until the end. Well, actually, the movie is not so scary, barely gore, and has zero nudity. We've seen MUCH worse in 16+ movies. You can watch it, but don't expect a thrilling horrifying experience.

Claim Your Voice.

Apostle

Evans has evidently enormous love towards mythology and his fantasy of jotting down those emotions on screen is the only reason why this film stays firmly on the ground in big whirls of winds, it may shake but it survives. The knack of outsmarting our imagination is his another way in, it has impeccably subtle narration dipped in literal bloodbath that is well reasoned and something that doesn't come off, off-putting. Slowly crawling itself for the annihilation this entire island, no matter how pasty and spooky, is something that represents the entire film and the characters revolving around it.

The action drama is a basic 1-0-1, it builds up the characters effervescently, and weaves out antics that at its best is mediocre, for the real drama is hidden somewhere else. In its initial stages it may come off as one big chunk of cliche when Sheen helms the territory, but Evans dives deep into characters and pulls out a three dimensional view in front of us that makes you rethink everything once again. And it is that rebooting of the genre in every act that helps it last long.

What I worry about among all, is Evans fragment of imagination over this world, it is clearly not fair, there comes in a lot of compromise for the viewers to seek solace in this harrowing island, the thrills aren't cheap though, then why should justice be. Stevens is barely in charge of this island, for a fraction of second he gets to reveal his true self while Sheen is blessed with much room to flaunt his persona and overpower others, he seems complicated for he is simple. Apostle has a long way to go to enter the major leagues, but this big wallop of shock cannot go unnoticed.

For me, this was such a movie. It looks good, has the benefit of great actors, and starts off with a tense and promising story. But after an hour or so, it becomes clearer that the story cannot deliver, that the director/editor lets it drag on too long, and that you no longer care about what happens. Skip this one if you have high standards.

Expand

The problem with Apostle is the story-telling. The movie offered little to no background at all and the character motivations are not clear. That and the massive plot-holes this film has. While the premise of 'travelling to a secluded and primitive mini-society of people who operate in ways considered immoral by the majority of humanity' is done a fair bit (surprisingly), this movie offers its own unique take with its own mythology. The cast of characters is very engaging, in both acting and writing, and it's shocking to see what happens to some of them. I might have cried at one point? I'm actually not sure, but it felt like it. Of course, being a horror movie, it also offered some nice scares, mostly through the crazed cult members as usual but sometimes through some fairly stranger characters. The Grinder is an example of the latter. I have no idea who they were as it was never explained, and I won't spoil them by going into detail, but they were always so uncomfortable to see on screen (in a good way), and the unsolved mystery surrounding them helped greatly. If for nothing else, watch Apostle for The Grinder. They're so weird. Expand
