I don't know how the story in the comic was, but I can tell you this, Ant-Man is the perfect character for the big screen. The special effects are nothing short of magic and take the concepts of Honey, I Shrunk The Kids to a whole other level. Scientist Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) created a new technology, one that was so dangerous, he buried the research deep in his company archives, but when his successor comes across it years later, he develops it, despite warning from Pym. In order to stop this from getting out, Pym recruits an unlikely hero to help him, Scott Lang (Paul Rudd). Lang is one of the best burglars around and Pym hopes to use these unique skills to get back his work. The only thing is the company's lab is impenetrable to all, except bugs. Using his prototype, Lang becomes Ant-Man and that is when this film really gets fun. Paul Rudd is absolutely terrific in this movie, as a small, nerdy, awkward guy, he can be hysterical under the right circumstances and this was just the perfect role for his personality. Rudd is paired with Michael Douglas, who 10 years ago wouldn't have even considered doing a film like this, showing just how powerful and influential the Marvel brand has become. Out of all the Marvel films to date this is perhaps the most interesting one. The cast is amazing, the special effects are outstanding, and I may never see Thomas The Train in the same way again. If you're like me, and not crazy about superheroes, don't let that stop you from seeing this film. Ant-Man has a little bit of everything and goes way beyond anything I would have ever expected to see in film based on a comic book. Expand

While Wright has a diehard fanbase and a distinct visual style (although his geeky smartness sometimes can go overboard, like SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD 2010), Reed can no more than be extolled as a slick journeyman in cranking up comedies like YES MAN (2008, 6/10), THE BREAK-UP (2006, 6/10), DOWN WITH LOVE (2003, 5/10) and BRING IT ON (2000), so fans should automatically lower their expectation.

When Edgar Wright left i was'nt upset, but nervous because it was going under so many changes, but Peyton made Antman fun, emotional and enjoyable. The action was okay(good for an origin story), it had a simple plot, but it was excecuted beautifly the performances from Micheal Douglas, Paul rudd and Evangeline Lilly were perfect and the secondary characters fit in well like tip harris and Bobby Cannavale although Judy Greer was't fleshed out. The father-daughter drama was spot on and Antman fit in to the Marvel universe perfectly.Whats not beautiful however is Corey Stoll as Yellowjacket before he was Yellowjacket he was an okay villian,BUT the transformation into yellowjacket took too long and he was sadly wasted, In the first act of the movie a few parts did'nt come together like Paul rudd becoming Antman and a few parts dragged on like Scott Lang's transition in to Antman, otherwise it was a fun movie, The humour, was amazing especially Michael Peña who was great comic relief. Antman was an enjoyable movie to watch with good action, cast and humour, and Marvel keeps on ticking with Good movies. Expand

It had a great main character, and good supporting characters relating to this character personally, and on a level of business. The biggest issue with the movie is the fact that most physical components connected to Scott Lang. I know it is impossible to make it realistic enough, but sizing abilities seem to be finicky. You can see him easily see-able small enough on a play table, but seemingly smaller within an anthill. None the less, the visual effects are effective and just cool. Another thing with this movie is its non-canonness. "Ant-Man" in his original comic was also able to become a "Giant-Man". I guess the reason they scrapped this idea was to make it seem like a "covert operation", rather than a full scale offensive against a threat to the Avengers/ a threat against the populace. I guess they are going to have him be a "covert operation assistant" for the Avengers, rather than a full-scale offensive specialist. Overall, I'd give this movie a 9/10. Oh yes, I'm not setting this as spoilers because Ant-Man was an original Avenger, not just an "Ex-Shield Agent " as suggested by the movie. Expand

Size doesn't matter if he's a superhero who committed to save the world.

My confession is I never read 'Ant-man' comics and I never knew such kind of superhero even exist in Marvel till this movie was announced. (But I know Danish film 'Antboy'.) So I'm glad they brought cinematic version of 'Ant-man' and I'm sure he'll return to the next 'Avengers' as they promoted strongly in this film itself to know what would be the audience response. I don't know others, but I definitely welcome the idea.

Another CGI magic, another Marvel's wonder. As long as they pick the right cast and crew with a good story, the sci-fi like this continues to rule the cinema world. It was a great team work, that must be appreciated. As usual the top notch visuals as well the performances, even the sidekicks. But I was surprised to see when Paul Rudd was attached to this project. I believed it would be a comedy sci-fi packed with full of action, and I was wrong. It was a simple tale, a heist theme and of course it was fun to watch, but never was a comedy movie.

A wonderful beginning, especially for the first film in the series. You know strong foundation is the key to raise a building above. I know the sequels would only get better by progressing and it should be. Because in all the Marvel's superhero flicks, this one was the most family and young kids friendly. That does not mean there were no violence, but from the title to the characters and presentation, all were so casual and can be understood by all.

It was so great to see a legend like Michael Douglas to be a part in the modern movie. Now I am eager to see Evangeline Lily as Wasp-girl in the follow-up. It would be like Peter Pan and Tinker Bell, but in a sci-fi version. The extras were very interesting, I enjoyed them as well. If you're are yet to see the film, don't expect anything like Disney's 'Honey' trilogy, after all, if you enjoy the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) then you would do same for it which is the twelfth to follow.

The actors do a good job (not that any of them ever get any chance at shining in any of these Marvel films though, at least compared to blockbusters like Planet of the Apes or Hunger Games for example).
Ant-Man is probably the wrong superhero to bring on screen, it just is a little bit laughable.

When I first heard about this movie, I skipped it because I assumed it was some kind of a joke/parody (based on the title), but it actually turned out to be a genuinely good superhero movie—up there with Guardians of the Galaxy for me.

It had great characters, emotion, and a decent enough plot as far as Marvel movies go. I was also positively surprised by the action scenes which usually put me to sleep in these kind of movies; in Ant-Man they actually had some kind of choreography and were easy to follow instead of just being mindless gun blasting that serves to pad out the film.

8/10 for this one. Not bad.

It is just simply a meh movie, Marvel's formula is becoming stale now, one liners left right and center, just too many jokes. I loved the heist aspect of the movie, as it kept the movie fresh and not just a typical action movie. Douglas was great as Pym and Rudd was fantastic as Ant-Man. The easter eggs were great and the fight with Falcon was good too, Marvel have done a great job at building this universe.

Ant man's villain.....Ugh, Marvel can barely get a villain right other than Loki, hopefully Thanos doesn't continue this trend. Overall it was an enjoyable movie to watch, it just didn't wow me like other comic book movies have.

Insanely overrated. Once it hits video, the ratings will plummet unless Disney pays for reviews.

Movie is insanely boring. More boring than the last 2 Avengers. Its not horrible, not but nothing was great about any of it. Special effects are nothing special by todays standard, the story was very bad and the antagonists were completely unbelievable and not in a funny way. Since the bad guys were so stupid, it destroyed the plot and frankly, I was hoping Ant Man would die in the end. The romance angle was equally unbelievable and both actors were simply not enjoyable to watch. The entire move was a cliche and a bad one, the cliche being that comic books have no depth and are cheesy thus its funny when you a make a movie that way... it isnt. And not all comics are written by idiots like the Avengers, Iron Man and now Ant Man. Since I basically fell asleep during this film, I am going to rate it slightly below average (average on Metacritic is a 5).

Before watching this film: I have seen all of the Marvel Comic Universe (MCU) films except for Ultron, which was reportedly, only OK.

Premise: A ex-con must master the shrinking powers of the Ant-man suit to stop an ambitious inventor from developing the same technology and then selling it to nefarious organisations.

Pros:
1. It is an interesting take and deviation from the traditional story of the Ant-man.
2. I am not completely aware of the adventures of Ant-man in the comics, but the special effects and the interactions between Ant-man and the ants are very well done.

Cons:
1. In this film, Ant-man is supposed to have nothing to do with the Avengers, not yet anyway. However, the filmmakers had name-drop the Avengers a couple of times, had an Avengers character do something significant in the film, and even had a villain organisation out in the open. The connections with the Avengers seemed cheap and designed to please the kids.
2. I don't know why Ant-man and the villain needs to keep expanding and shrinking during their fights, if they are already that powerful when tiny.
3. The film is good, but not great. It just doesn't have that certain je ne sais quoi you get in Iron Man (1), in my view the only great MCU film.

Score: 4/5 (no half scores). It is good enough to pay to watch it in the cinema.

Who would be satisfied with the film? People of all ages would like this film equally well, but more so for a Marvel comics fan.

A much more laid back and relaxed movie than its predecessors for Marvel Cinematic Universe, Ant-Man shines with its charming performance from Paul Rudd and introduces the titular hero very well.

Rating: 8.5/10

Pros:
+Charming performance from Paul Rudd as Scott Lang. He nailed it!
+The signature MCU humor feels more appropriate for this movie than the previously released Age of Ultron and this is backed by a lot of great characters in the movie especially from Luis (played by Michael Pena).
+This movie introduced Ant-Man to the audience very well that it's going to be exciting to see him again on Captain America: Civil War.
+The scenes where Ant-Man shrinks are awesome and that's when the hero is sold for me.

Cons:
-Yellowjacket is a very one-dimensional villain. Marvel really needs to step up their villains in the levels of Loki and Wilson Fisk, or at least in the levels of Ultron where the viewers including myself can understand a villain's intentions.

Marvel has a pretty good grasp on the super-hero movie genre and tends to produce good films every time. Ant-Man is no exception. Although this film fails to reach the epic heights of some of Marvel’s other exploits such as, The Avengers,Marvel has a pretty good grasp on the super-hero movie genre and tends to produce good films every time. Ant-Man is no exception. Although this film fails to reach the epic heights of some of Marvel’s other exploits such as, The Avengers, Ironman and Guardians of the Galaxy, it does a more than adequate job of entertaining and telling a story of a much lesser known comic book hero. Our “hero” is actually an ex-con that is famous for having “gotten even” with his former employer for stealing, with a white collar modern day Robin Hood caper. Luis is one of his “criminal” buddies and adds a comic relief element to the film that is refreshing and genuinely funny.

Marvel movies utilize techniques and tactics designed to break up the action and deliver both drama and humor mixed among the explosions and CGI wonders that make this genre so popular. In the case of Ant-Man, director Peyton Reed delivers an interesting but not entirely novel method of Luis explaining to Scott (AKA Ant-Man) where he got a “tip” for heist. Mr. Reed calls them “Tip Montages”. The camera flashes back through the chain of events of “he said, then told so and so…” leading to the information with Luis narrating what they said. Michael Peña is a scene stealer with his funny dialog and excellent delivery as Luis who gets off on many tangents before finally arriving at the “point” of topic.

Where Ant-Man falls down is on the villain side of the story. Our bad guy is just not selling the good sauce in this film. Corey Stoll does a decent job overall but is not really fully engrossed in the evil villain role. This may be as much about screenwriting as acting, but I just wasn’t really convinced he was any real threat. Don’t get me wrong, not every bad-guy has to be a complete megolomaniac with a God complex a la Thanos, but this villain was just not scary… not until the very end and even then, not really.

Marvel continues to show the world that they can weave many tales into a story and bring everything together. You will see Avengers cameos that make sense, you will see the Ant-Man story arc merge into the general Marvel universe, Bravo for keeping all those loose ends neatly tied together. You hear that DC? Tie that **** together!

Our leading lady, Hope van Dyne is played by Canadian actress, Evangeline Lilly and she is awesome. She has a certain on-screen something that I can’t quite put my finger on; but I like it. I like it allot. My friend Frank didn’t like her haircut, but it worked for me. It fit her somehow. Throughout the film I am never really sure what she is up to. What is her angle any way? Not until the end do you really know and even then at the very end she makes a face that is a bit disconcerting. She wields a look that seems to reveal a slight diabolic edge, but I could be imagining it. At any rate, Marvel can take many roads with this character.

Paul Rudd is solid in the lead role as Scott Lang AKA Ant-Man. Paul is a guy that is often portraying a supporting character. In this film however, he is “the guy” and he delivers the goods intact. I won’t say he hit a home run, but it was a middle inning RBI single at least. I feel Rudd was very well cast in this role.

The Marvel comic had three different men as Ant-Man and surprisingly the character that was chosen as Ant-Man was Scott Lang, who was not the most popular Ant-Man. Hank Pym was the most well-known Ant-Man who would be in the film but not as the hero. Edgar Wright was also chosen as the original director for the film that began development in 2006 but left in May of 2014 and was replaced by Peyton Reed.

Ant-Man is quite possibly the best origin story Marvel has produced since Iron-Man and is one of the best stand alone Marvel movies yet. Ant-Man was an unknown hero to non-comic fans and his origins had never been told which made his upbringing all the more interesting. Scott Lang is a character were care about as he is a man who is looking to better himself and win back his daughter. Paul Rudd did end up being a good choice for Lang because he can be serious when need be and funny during the light hearted moments because Ant-Man would be fairly ridiculous if it was taken too seriously. Ant-Man’s powers really intrigued me and the visual effects really did his powers justice.

The rest of the cast is great behind Rudd. This may be the best ensemble cast I’ve seen so far this year. I am really excited to have Michael Douglas in the Marvel Universe. He is an extremely talented actor who will hopefully appear as Hank Pym in some later film considering his back story. Evangeline Lilly plays Pym’s daughter Hope and she is very likeable as a strong independent woman who looks to show Scott Lang the ropes. Then you have Lang’s friends who are also crooks headlined by Michael Pena who is really funny in this movie and he really fits into the mix well.

Corey Stoll is the villain in this film and I think that he does a fairly good job. His motivations are fairly developed but I would’ve appreciated just a little more screen time for him.

Ant-Man is another welcome addition to the Marvel Franchise and offers some great visuals, great characters, a good story and some overall fun. Marvel wins again.

Unfortunately the first hour and a half of the movie is just the same old boring talking heads and men in suits that we see in so many MCU movies. The humor was an odd style for Marvel and I felt like I was being ping-ponged between an overlong Key and Peele sketch and a Ben Stiller comedy movie. In fact, Ant's actor reminds me of Ben Stiller so much that I think this is the sole reason for the effect, and that's unfortunate. If this movie had been made with a little more heart and soul as to Ant-Man's motivations and his relationship with his family I think it could've been something really special, but alas, it was just another 2 hour CGI and joke fest like most of the MCU. The formula is running dry and needs something to spice it up. This film tried to go from the heist comedy angle and just felt like something old that I've seen plenty of times in other movies that did it better. I'm trying to watch all of the MCU in preparation for Endgame and I don't know how I'm gonna watch Ant-man and The Wasp after this. Hopefully it is less boring than this one. One other thing, I know these movies are based on more fleshed-out stories in the comics, but that's no excuse to just have characters suddenly and spontaneously make out and have a stupid predictable romance that has zero foreshadowing in the film and is only expected because it's what Marvel does. It happens to nearly every single MCU hero at some point and I'm totally sick of it. Expand

Ant-Man is an achievement from Marvel. This movie has the all-in-one essence, pure from Marvel; do you think Guardians of the Galaxy was a comedy? This movie is pure comedy (in the best way possible) I love the way it put all together, comedy, ACTION, history, EASTER EGGS, this movie was the true entry for Civil War. Not to mention the performances (perfect cast), Paul Rud was just amazing for the role, Evangeline, lovely, Douglas did an excellent work. Ant-Man made me feel like if I were in the Marvel Universe. After the not so good Age of Ultron, this made all back in the game. Seriously, as a true Marvel fan, An excellent film. Expand

If you could shrink down to just a very small ant, your life would be different. Humans would be giants, toy trains would become trains. It gets that sense that small things are big.

Ultimately, it gets the job done correctly. It was well-done, well-executed, and just plain funny as the visuals blew me away. The camera shrinks down on the main person as if he is riding with a small little fly on some scenes. This is some of the best uses of the camera as if I was severely impressed at this miracle. Even I thought the third act could be a simulator ride at Disneyland.

In accordance to the spell bounding visuals, this film also has an awesome cast which includes Paul Reed, Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly, and more. They all do spectacular performances with power, wit, charm, and humor. Speaking of humor, this movie is really funny. It has a ton of jokes that really had the audience laughing. I thought that the young girl was adorable and when she got along with an evil stuffed bunny. Also, the fight scenes, which are wonderfully choreographed, are loads of fun. So forget the critics who said it was generic and boring, Ant-Man is unique and funny.

If I had to find a fault in this movie, I had to admit that it was a bit rushed and not really a memorable movie (The Avengers was). It was also a bit forced from time to time. Even if it was a bit rushed, a bit forced, and a bit unmemorable, Ant-Man still manages a step forward in moviemaking. So the jokes land right on spot and the thrills are thrilling. Top it off with a top cast and some really cool effects and visuals and the result is a wild thrill ride that will entertain everyone 10 and up. So I came in with no expectations and then I found a movie that was much better than Avengers: Age of Ultron.

(In my Mission Impossible 5 review, I noted that Mission Impossible 5 was the better movie. Still, Ant-Man was still a great and comedic adventure.)

Ant-Man just isn't great. I went into this movie with an open mind but my lower expectations still weren't matched. But that end fighting scene redeemed much of the movie's boring elements. It's not bad, just painfully under average.

Bullshingles.

After watching Guardians of the Galaxy which I thought was great, and Avengers Age of Ultron which was alright, I was starting to think that maybe these Marvel films are finally starting to get better. But now they made this thing to not have me too excited for the future.

The film starts and the first thing that throws me off a bit is how awful it looks. Just terrible colors, bad lighting, bland. We're introduced to Hank Pym who created the Ant-Man suit, and the villain of the film who in typical Marvel fashion was a very bad uninteresting villain. And also Scott Lang who's the main character. Hank Pym and Scott Lang were both alright but I didn't really care about them during this film. Paul Rudd as an actor shows promise though. I liked him. The first 20 to 30 minutes were basically setup. It takes a lot of time before Scott finally decides to do a break-in and find the Ant-Man suit. Interestingly the movie felt the need to set up the villain a lot longer which was pretty weird.

So it basically takes 30 minutes for anything fun to start happening. The break-in scene was pretty good and neatly edited and Scott testing out the suit was also pretty cool but didn't last very long. Hank training Scott was decent, but the movie kept going back to the villain who was s*it. The thing with these origin stories is that you know there's never really gonna be any cool superhero stuff where the superhero would know what they're doing until like the climax of the film. That's not necessarily a bad thing. Iron Man is a great example of how to do an origin story right. This movie's not. This movie's just decent to below decent after the novelty wears off. I did not feel like I was watching a movie from the same studio that made the first Avengers and I definitely didn't think I was watching a set up movie that's literally adding this character to the Avengers too. This film was painfully uninteresting, generic and looked way cheaper than the other Marvel films from the second phase at least. Having a more original backstory definitely would've helped and investing more time in to the writing and effects would've probably made this feel more like a film that belongs in this Marvel universe.

It is funnier than it should be, even for a Marvel movie and the characters aren't anything special. In the end, "Ant-Man" is a nearly two hours movie but the exciting stuff is taking place in the second half of it.

Ant-Man, Directed by Peyton Reed, Starring Paul Rudd, Micheal Douglas, Evangeline Lilly, Micheal Pena, and Anthony Mackie. Now Ant-Man is very funny thanks to Paul Rudd, but the jokes seem to overtake the action that takes place in the film, even the hilarious jokes from Micheal Pena were very funny, the humor may flood the action, but you just can't take your eyes off of the amazing 3D CGI that Marvel Studios used in the film because it pops out so much that it look really real. The CGI might as well be the best thing about this film other than the great humor. Another thing that was great was the fact that the film wasn't overly long like other films made by Marvel, but that was probably another problem, you see there really wasn't enough story to really make a connection to the comics, clearly the film starts off before Hank Pym gives up being Ant-Man, then Scott Lang gets out of prison and becomes Ant-Man, then it really takes a good leap farther into the comics while not staying in order for more understanding. Ant-Man really goes somewhere and make another good superhero movie from Marvel, but Ant-Man has more to prove to movie goers. Expand

Having enjoyed a vast majority of Marvel's superhero output (more so than most) without worshipping them, 'Ant-Man' is a minor effort from them but there is still a good amount to like about it.

'Ant-Man' manages to be a better film than expected. The character is not exactly a household name and is always tossed aside in favour of other superhero characters like Spiderman that have had longer longevity and perhaps have more compelling origins and stories, hence why they are adapted more. Also wasn't sure what to make of the trailer, which made the film out to be rather bland and too reliant on humour.

Seeing it for myself finally a year on, 'Ant-Man' could have been better. While the humour mostly works wonders, there are a few instances where it's not so funny and not very well placed, like in emotional scenes that are actually quite poignant and then interrupted by a joke that is not only forced and unfunny but also not belonging in the scene. The family scenes are a mixed bag, sometimes they are sweet and touching while at other times they're a little flat and predictable, contributing towards a few rare dull stretches. Corey Stoll also goes through the motions as the rather generic and under-characterised villain.

On the other hand, 'Ant-Man' is a great looking film, it's beautifully shot, very atmospheric, is very slick and the special effects, mostly the rapid size-changing and with the ants, are clever and of the usual high-quality Marvel standards. The music avoids being over-bearing, one-note, too quirky or too bombastic, fitting well tone, mood and pace-wise. Direction is more than competent, keeping the story going at a solid pace and the telling of it interesting enough, though maybe a little more flavour may have been more welcome. While the action is not as much as most Marvel films, it is fun, thrilling, nicely choreographed and tautly shot and edited, especially towards the end. Admittedly there are a couple of cheesy parts towards the end too, but kind of in an endearing rather than jarring way and it doesn't jar with the rest of the film.

There is some very smart and hugely entertaining scripting and dialogue here in 'Ant-Man' too. While it doesn't work completely seamlessly, 'Ant-Man' is one of Marvel's generally consistently funniest films, and the film doesn't take itself too seriously or too much of a joke either, instead not being afraid to embrace the silliness and humour while ensuring still that the subject matter is treated with respect. It is especially good with the title character's deadpan quips and Luis' fast-talking patter. The story is mostly diverting, it's narratively simpler than most Marvel outings and less risks here are taken than most Marvel films but it always makes sense, moments of dullness and jarring are few (while not being completely absent either), it's fun and it doesn't try to do too much or try to insert too many characters while not playing things too safe either.

While not complex as such, the characters are mostly engaging and are not too one-dimensional, only the villain could have had more done with him. Paul Rudd is a strong and hugely entertaining lead, while Michael Peña's hilarious in a role that could have been really annoying. The seasoned support of Michael Douglas adds hugely too, and Evangeline Lilly gives the film some much needed heart. Anthony Mackie is good too.

Overall, minor Marvel but good Marvel. Well-made and a lot of fun, but there is a personal preference to the Marvel films that took bigger risks with more and often richer characters, bigger bolder action and more going on in the story. 'Ant-Man' executes a vast majority of its components really well indeed, just that Marvel has done even better before and since. 7/10 Bethany Cox

It was a nice change that it was a heist film instead of being about the Infinity stones or something. The only thing I would complain about it Corey Stoll's Yellowjacket. I thought he was a bit underwhelming as he's the typical bad guy who comes off as good and then being bad and what not. I felt like they could have explored his role more. Riddled with Easter eggs and a fun cameo from an Avenger. I can't wait to see An-Man in the new Avengers and its sequel which judging by the ending of it, could be really good Expand

My major problem with this film lies in its straightforwardness. It passes on too much time explaining the basic things (like how Hank can't get along with his daughter) and too little time explaining the supernatural things (like how he can freaking communicate with ants, or how he build a shrinking suit using 1980s army gear). I mean at first it shows us some dude turning into a wad of red goo in the fraction of a second, then we're expected to laugh at main character's comebacks a la Adam Sandler, and finally there is a 10 feet train and a 5 feet ant lying around where the hero fought some idiot who has millions yet he doesn't mind doing generic villain acting in a suit that looks like Power Rangers upgrade... and in between, Scott tries to kiss the girl. Is that a family flick? Is that a superhero flick with occasional blood and gore? Is that a sitcom? Nope. Just "Ant-Man".
That's what you get when you blend them in together. Though rest assured, Marvel fans - it didn't ruin the franchise.

Comparing this superhero movie with the rest it is great. The cliche 'tragic superhero theme' is there but with a fairly fun twist; our hero isn't depicted as potentially amazing right away but as someone as 'less than desirable' by society. No other Marvel Heroes are like this; the rest are generally seen as having some amazing potential right away or just simple existence (like Spider Man and Captain America).

It semi-delivered on this expectation, enough that it felt kind of fresh and made me wish other standalone hero movies were equally entertaining (that is, about 23% more entertaining). The pacing is good in the first half and rushed in the second, which may be a consequence of the rewrites, who knows. Plenty goes unexplained but the pieces fit together nicely enough, a snug click but not an exciting clack. Michael Douglas beats the toy train for Official Highlight of the Film. Hank Pym has been conspicuously absence from the new Marvel movieland and I’d rather watch him ferreting around in a lab coat and telling people they’re full of **** for two hours than see another scientist fight his own ego while wearing a Mega Man suit. Antman isn't with the bests works of the MCU, but at the end, the talented cast and surprisingly inventive storytelling that shows are enough to be notably considered by the audience.

Ant-Man, as obscure a superhero title as has been released since the inception of the so-called "MCU" (Marvel Cinematic Universe), may test the perception that Marvel can do no wrong. The general public knows Spider-Man, Iron Man, CaptainAnt-Man, as obscure a superhero title as has been released since the inception of the so-called "MCU" (Marvel Cinematic Universe), may test the perception that Marvel can do no wrong. The general public knows Spider-Man, Iron Man, Captain America, and The Hulk, but they don't know Ant-Man. And, unlike what happened with Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel hasn't carpet-bombed pop culture with a marketing blitz. So Ant-Man has to stand on its own merits with only the Marvel brand to differentiate it from, for example, Green Lantern.

The movie tries to offer something marginally different from the run-of-the-mill superhero origin story. It's hard to say how much of Edgar Wright's original vision remains in the final product, but the tone is more jokey than that of most Marvel movies. Unfortunately, it's almost impossible to make it through the entirety of Ant-Man's two hours without thinking of Honey, I Shrunk the Kids as least once, and I'm not sure that's an association the filmmakers were courting.

Narratively, tone differences aside, this follows the "origin story" formula with little variation. With the exception of an unfortunate deus ex machine plot point, every beat of Ant-Man is predictable. The movie is engaging in the same way as a generic romantic comedy: we know exactly what's going to happen at every moment but there's some comfort in that. Ant-Man contains some compelling scenes (there's a great fight sequence between the title character and someone more established from the MCU) but there's nothing innovative in terms of content or how it is presented. Ant-Man scampers along with a "been there, done that" vibe. The attempts at overt comedy are hit-and-miss. The heist elements are derivative and not nearly as inventive as one might expect given the possibilities. The action sequences are variable and the dramatic moments… the less said, the better.

Despite having buffed up physically for the part, Paul Rudd is an unlikely choice to play a superhero. His character, Scott Lang, is intended to be an "ordinary guy", and the actor imbues Scott with the most ordinary of traits: he's kind-of boring. The defining factor in Scott's life is that he wants to be a good dad. After spending some time in prison (he once earned his living as a Robin Hood-inspired cat burglar), Scott has a lot to make up for. The problem with this backstory is that the screenplay never sufficiently cultivates the relationship between Scott and his daughter for us to really care. As played by Abby Ryder Fortson, Cassie is a one-note "cute" movie child that the filmmakers fail to develop. Her scenes with Rudd don't gel. This is a critical rent in the film's dramatic fabric.

Ant-Man feels overlong, with a lion's share of the screen time devoted to the obligatory scenes of Scott learning his "craft." We get the expected training montage; I suppose no superhero origin story would be complete without this. There's a quasi-romance between Scott and Hope that comes out of nowhere and goes nowhere. Ant-Man is hyper-aware of its place in the MCU. It name-drops shamelessly and features several appearances by characters we have seen before. The overall effect is to remind us that there was a time when the MCU was less crowded and more fun. Stand-alone superhero movies have no place in this universe anymore.

Ant-Man isn't "bad" in the sense that many movies are "bad." It's just lackluster - a diversion with no staying power. The lead character is interchangeable with any number of Grade B superheroes - his unique "power" doesn't make the results or the means to achieve them sufficiently different. It wasn't that long ago when superhero movies took chances. (Remember The Dark Knight?) Now, they are risk-averse. That's perhaps the most disappointing thing about Ant-Man.

For comic book fans, the addition of Ant-Man to the Marvel family will undoubtedly be greeted with high-fives and cheers. The movie, however, doesn't give the rest of us a reason to care. As the post-credits caption informs us, Ant-Man will return, although it's likely he'll be back as part of a team. This is an appetizer and like most meager fare, it doesn't satisfy. Let's hope the main course, when it comes, offers more than these warmed-over hors d'oeuvres.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This review was previously posted on my blog, so apologies if bits don't make sense on another site!

Recently, I’ve been watching the MCU films again. This is mostly due to the run-up to Avengers 3. I haven’t felt the need to do reviews for most of them, but since my last post was semi-related to this film, I thought I might as well review it.

As mentioned in my previous post, Edgar Wright was briefly involved in this film. As a fan of his work, this naturally elevates the film for me. While I can’t know exactly what the director was involved with, you can still clearly see his fingerprints on the finished product. The editing is also brilliant at times, keeping the pacing of the film quick. A great soundtrack is present, and some comedy moments actually work, unlike my usual experience with recent Marvel movies. Unfortunately, the OST is a disappointment. This seems to be a frequent problem with most Marvel films. Can you, dear reader, remember an original song from a Marvel film? The only one people seem to be consistent with is the Avengers theme, which is rather odd; you have a cast of such varied and unique characters, and the music could really reflect that. Instead, songs feel like they could be taken from one film and added to another, and nobody would notice a difference.

The cinematography is decent enough. There’s rarely anything mind-blowing. Most of the highlights come from various jokes relating to the ever-changing size of the protagonist. Sharp cuts to reveal how mediocre the events occurring actually are happen frequently, and almost always to great effect.

The dialogue was middling. The film falls into a painful trap, where the mentor character dumps a full scene of exposition onto our uneducated protagonist. It’s rather frustrating given the fact that most viewers have already pieced the plot together. We don’t need a recap. Also, there’s various moments where lines are clumsily delivered. I don’t know it’s that’s due to the actors or the writers, but regardless, parts simply don’t work.

The actors in this film are also interesting. There’s very few poor performances, but at the same time, the writing can often let people down. Evangeline Lily is probably the most consistent of the performers, and Corey Stoll (ignoring the dodgy dialogue and poor writing) is perfectly fine as our antagonist.

Also, rather oddly, the film seems to slip between originality and cliches rather easily. Ant-Man relishes in the standard scenes of a ‘shrunken person’ film, with small things being scarier, almost being stepped on and apocalyptic baths all being present. At the same time, however, moments are peculiarly mature. The protagonist isn’t much of a hero. He’s a convicted criminal who’s just gotten out of jail. His partner has separated from him, and found a new lover, who is now acting as the father figure for their child. When I first watched the film, I expected it to end with Scott Lang (Paul Rudd)’s wife realising she really loves our protagonist, and has done all along. They’d get back together, and Scott would get full custody of his child again etc. Instead, it takes a far more mature route, and Scott finds a romantic interest of his own, while still remaining on good terms with his previous partner and her new lover.

Typically, the film has quite a few random issues. There’s a jarring absence of blood, despite characters being shot. There’s also moments where it’s clear we’re meant to be feeling some sort of emotion (and perhaps I’m just a sociopath) but I felt little to nothing at the ‘sad moments’. Also, the villain is simply awful. Again, however, this is annoyingly common with Marvel movies. Still, was a villainous Jeff Bezos the best they had to offer?

The film is ultimately bland, but perfectly serviceable. It’s an incredibly average Marvel movie, with depressing glimpses of real inspiration. I’ll give it a 6/10. If you’re a Marvel fan who’s yet to watch it, and are curious as to how important it is to the overarching MCU plot, I imagine you can skip it. The next film in the series, Captain America: Civil War does feature elements of this film, but it’s not really mandatory viewing. Still, if you have the time, there are worse ways to spend it.

Reed keeps throwing away the opportunity and Rudd keeps pulling it back in, this tug of war is pure fun.

Ant-Man

Reed's comic book film is more like a high budget-ed season finale of a sitcom. There is levity in its body language that seems God gifted. While the actual reason is, of course, co-writers like Edgar Wright and Adam McKay and Paul Rudd himself, along with the director Peyton Reed whose previous project has been of such genre. And yes, as far as the film cares for the joke, the punch line, it is of course difficult to beat this chapter, I think it would even surpass the second Iron Man. But there is always so much they can give in on humor, especially with a banner as big as of Marvel whose film evidently goes to places where not the average one does. And packing this mixture of diverse genre is where this Christmas gift goes wrong.

There are so many moments where you can see the lack of awareness between the screen time and the script, for instance, after Rudd finally manages to conjure the art of commanding an army of ants, the family drama that is ensued seems out of place, maybe the director's cut has the answer for it. The now-ripped Rudd fits right into the role from self-created quirkiness to how-to-train on a training montage, his carefree attitude still cracks me up.

But only until, Michael Pena hadn't arrive with a referential talk that he does so casually, his inevitability on not-evolving as a character is the best arc to it. Speaking of evolution, Evangeline Lilly never gets to experience that nor does Michael Douglas, in that case, their family drama despite of the past they have been through, seems monotonous and poorly crafted. Ant-Man is not a title nor a concept that would convince you to barge in on their heist, but once you do, your lazy bones would go stronger and you'd know that the film had succeeded in its entirety.
