Don't let the score fool you; I wouldn't recommend this movie to anybody.

Before I tell my personal experience with the movie, let's get the normal critical review material out of the way. Bradley Cooper did an amazing job playing his character, as with the other actors of this movie. Top-notch. The cinematography was very well executed as well, especially with the shots through the scopes. I don't know why, but I don't see that too much. The soundtrack was subtle, but noticeable in some parts, which is what I'd expect. Some gripes though: This doesn't show the man that Chris Kyle was. A scene at the end did show respect for him, but honestly the rest of the movie didn't really do that. However, that's not the main point of the movie, as I'll explain in a bit, so that's not the main gripe I have. Character development was severely lacking in basically all other characters except for Cooper's. Still, these flaws don't affect the score too much.

Now for my personal experience with this movie. This movie is a war movie, through and through. When I walk into a movie theater, however, I expect to suspend my disbelief and walk out unaffected. Sure, it may be a crying movie, but still it's not real. This movie was too real for me. I walked out of that theater so emotionally affected that I said to myself that I'd never see it again. Not because it's bad, but because it's too real. I won't use the word realistic (even though it is) because that doesn't seem to be the right word. Movies are unrealistic; it's just something that's been shown. This movie was too emotionally affecting, and I don't want anyone seeing it because of that one fact. A lot of people are saying this is a war propaganda film for America. I'd say that it was doing the literal polar opposite. It was showing the true nature of war; a subject many film-makers are afraid to tread on. All in all, this is a great movie that, again, nobody should watch.

What I CAN'T deal with is the crazy patriotism "movement" this movie is somehow bringing up. The movie is both objectively bad and kind of mean-spirited. Because of it's blandness and lack of punch, it seems that most people interpret it as some kind of reassurance. Painting us as the good guys and anyone with a turban on their heads as terrorists. It pains me to think people genuinely believe this movie is about patriotism and righteousness, when it clearly isn't.

To be clear: I don't hate this movie because I'm anti-american. I don't hate it because its an objectively bad film. I don't even hate it because of its lack of patriotism or clear message. I hate it because it allowed people to spill out their blind, hate filled rage at others and still manage to make them seem and feel in the right.

I had seen some bad reviews, as well as good reviews - and there seemed to be a partisan divide between those that liked it, and those that hated it. Thus, I was an expecting somewhat of a propaganda piece comparing the Iraq war to apple pie.

Nothing could have been further from the truth. This is a gritty, disturbing, realistic, heart breaking, non-political piece about one man's motivation, action & reaction to war and all it involves.

Bradley Cooper is brilliant, and his eyes reveal a thousand shades of emotion. This film does not glorify snipers, nor does it glorify the Iraq War - if anything, it is a realistic portrayal of why & how our soldiers fought & returned to this quagmire with little understanding or support from anyone back home.

It doesn't matter how you feel about the Iraq war, this film will touch your heart & soul and help you understand those that fought in America's name, right or wrong.

I put this film in the category of "Deer Hunter" & "Platoon" as far as capturing the essence of the conflict, and the heart of those involved.

Not Leni Riefenstahl, but a 2015 update version by the died in the wool right winger, Clint Eastwood. Like that propaganda film that justifies illegal torture, “Zero Dark Thirty”, it is excellent filmmaking. It is superbly paced and the photography is top notch. The soundtrack is riveting. The acting is excellent. And we sympathize with the protagonist who is a folksy hero. The bad guys are indeed bad. These “savages” (as “we’ call them time and again) drill holes in children’s’ heads for their parents betrayals and brutally attack our hero and his buddies. There are moments of decent that almost redeem it such as Kyle’s Brother’s shell-shocked rant on the war. However there is no mention of the 600,000 plus war related deaths (according to the Lancet) or that the drilling torturer was in fact modelled on a Sunni ally, or the US torture at Abu Ghraib, nor of course is there any mention of the innocents killed by snipers (as revealed by Wikileaks). We hear nothing of Fallujah’s American atrocities against real people with real families. We hear nothing of being led into this war under at misinformation and often outright lies (such as the Niger uranium, the chemical sites shown at the UN by Powell or the Al Qaeda training in Iraq… of none which is known to have existed.) First of all is interesting theAmerican Sniper marks the return of Clint Eastwood to war themes, like most of his movies what he is trying to accomplish here is to reveal the point of view from a selected character towards life and death. First of all is interesting the scenario in which the story takes place, the objective is to show how it changes people, in this case the ascension of Chris Kyle from nobody to US legend, and even more into some kind of god that watches over his child from above. Although what happens in Irak doesn't stay in Irak; and the failure in the protagonist's adaptation to the normal world is another thing that the director adds to this reflection; this is why Kyle will do what ever it takes to protect his family. Now I'd like to quote Walt Kowalsky's phrase from Gran Torino: "the thing the haunts a man the most, is what he isn't order to do"; since the viewer sees the trailer of this movie, he understands what we are speaking of. Every soldier of any other war in history excuses himself in his superiors, no one takes the responsibility, because they can't carry on their shoulders the guilt; here lies the inhuman strength of the protagonist and because of that transformation, he no longer belongs in our world. Clint Eastwood once more demonstrates what he is capable of and with a Bradley Cooper that is building himself a great career in acting. Expand

The makers of Red Dawn really did believe that America was vulnerable to being invaded and conquered by Soviet Russia. Even though the premise of Red Dawn was and is laughable, the Wolverines were people you could root for and the movie worked.

As to American Sniper, for me the picture was one-dimensional, the plot simple and wholly predictable.

Cooper is excellent as the title character, and Miller confounds expectations by matching his performance as his long suffering wife. There is a moral and ethical argument to be had here about the evils of war and whether or not we should be glorifying someone who is, to all intents and purposes, a stone cold killer, but that isn't what Eastwood is interested in. The enemy are deliberately kept at a distance and never become anything more than cyphers, but what Eastwood has crafted is a brilliant war film that, like the soldiers it depicts, gets on with the job without too much concern for why they are doing it Expand

American Sniper makes you understand Chris Kyle and how he saw the world. It speaks for him, perhaps better than the man spoke for himself. Whether you hate or love both the man and the film for that depends on your own moral character.

And therein lies my main issue.... the movie tries to do too many things. It tries to be all "Go America!" and at the same time tell about the plight of soldiers going through PTSD, an all to real under-treated issue. You can't do both in a film, or at least Clint Eastwood can't. Ultimately I was unimpressed and a little bored. Yeah it gets sad at the end because we all know what happens and the guy, in real life, seemed like a genuinely good person but the movie really is not that entertaining. Expand

I tried my very best to review this movie without putting in my political opinions. But I have to say something about this movie.

This movie is a war propaganda movie. If you think showing dead bodies with blood and having one character against war itself is considered enough an anti-war movie, then I am afraid you’re wrong. I believe that the director of the movie Clint Eastwood is an anti-war person despite being a Republican and he tries to deliver his anti-war message to the audience. But when the message is lost in the audience and instead encourages more war and Islamphobia, then I am afraid his so-called anti-war message is not delivered clearly.

Speaking of Clint Eastwood, his direction in this movie is okay. I have seen far better directing on war movies.

The characters in the movie are utterly unlikable and uninteresting. The main character Chris Kyle is really hard to sympathize and relate to especially that the Chris Kyle in real life turns out to be a huge dick. Despite that, Bradley Cooper delivers a really good performance that it’s almost uncanny to the real Chris Kyle.

Not all movies based on a real person has to be accurate but when this movie made Chris Kyle a hero with little to no flaws when he is a huge dick in real life like I said earlier, that kind of inaccuracy is unfair and biased.

The only parts I liked about this movie was how Chris Kyle dealt with his PTSD and it felt realistic without being over the top. However I feel like these scenes were underdeveloped and I needed more of him struggling with his PTSD.

Lastly, I don’t think this movie is worthy a Best Picture nomination for this year’s Oscars. It’s just another war movie that brings up nothing new to the table. It’s just overrated in Oscar terms for me.

American Sniper is not a movie for everyone and in my opinion it’s very overrated. I am not stopping you from watching this movie but keep in mind while watching is that this movie has a one-sided depiction of war and the real-life version of Chris Kyle is not a nice human being.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While this movie undoubtedly has good, dramatic moments, overall it's a superficial treatment of a complex subject. One comedian on the Nightly Show described it as "duck hunt but with Iraqis", and that wasn't an unfair assessment. Even in the rare moments that interaction occurs between the American forces and the people they're invading, the Iraqis invariably turn out to be trying to kill the Americans, a simplistic and uninteresting way to portray them, since the Americans are the only good guys. The enemy sniper, who is intended to be the foil and rival to the American Chris Kyle, is nothing more than a cardboard cutout of a cartoonish villain, complete with long eyelashes and a headscarf. Especially since our protagonist never entertained any doubts about the essential goodness of what he was doing in Iraq, it felt like a simplified and one-sided story about the war. Expand

Certainly an interesting movie. Coming in, I wasn't sure what to expect - a piece of propaganda? A touching and scary story about PTSD? Action on the battlefield?

Well, it turns out it's a mash of everything. It's about Chris Kyle, a top-notch American Sniper. It goes between a soap-opera-ish movie with his wife and an action/drama during the war scenes, but it mixes very well. Cooper is unrecognizable with how buff he is, and he nails his role.

It's pretty intense, a bit smooshy is some parts, but overall pretty touching. I would recommend seeing this movie.

Overall, I think it's worth a look though. It had a lot of patriotic themes, but by no means does it glorify war or killing. Many of the characters are conflicted over their actions. Having said that, all this nasty guttersnipe directed at the memory of Chris Kyle is horsesh*t. And kudos to Mr. Eastwood for having the courage to make a move which honestly portrays some of the aftermath our soldiers deal with. Directed by Clint Eastwood with a screenplay by Jason Hall, the film stars Bradley Cooper and Sienna Miller. This is the story of a true patriot whose love of country knows no bounds and is inspiring to the most callous of disbelievers. Much like the movie "Selma", the subject of the film is greater than the film itself. This is an action packed war picture with lots of action and, true to Mr. Eastwood’s love of the military and the battles they face, shows us the true nature of the conflict and trials and tribulations of the brave men who fight in them and the mental and physical healing that is so critical to their survival. I viewed the film under the best of circumstances in an IMAX theater and still came away feeling that I had seen "another war film" rather than the great piece of film making that is receiving so much revenue, drawing so many crowds and receiving so many craft nominations. The film is much too long and at times the audience feels it is taking these extra tours of duty along with the
characters in the film. I give the film an 8 because it did hold my interest even though it failed the "I never looked at my watch" test..

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After hearing numerous positive remarks over the new movie starring Bradley Cooper, I decided to go see American Sniper for myself. At first I was skeptical about Cooper playing such a serious role after seeing him in movies such as The Hangover and He’s Just Not That Into You. Just like the majority of women in America today, I am very fond of him and his acting and assumed he would do a great job performing any character in any type of movie.
My assumption was right. American Sniper was probably one of the top five movies I’ve ever seen and hands down the best movie I’ve ever seen in theaters. Luckily I was able to see it in IMAX at the Warren Theater opening night, which took my experience to the next level. The theater was completely filled and I had to wait an hour in line before I could get a seat. It was no surprise to me that the movie made approximately ninety million dollars in just the first weekend.
The movie was based on a true story about an American hero from Texas. Chris Kyle served as a Navy SEAL and had the most confirmed enemy sniper kills in the Middle East. The movie depicts Kyle’s life during the war as well as his personal life at home with his wife and children. It covers not only the aspects of war and his missions, but the detrimental effects war can have on a person’s life after they come home.
It also shows how much fighting in the war and serving his country meant to Kyle. He kept insisting to go back to Iraq for months and months at a time despite his wife’s strong efforts to keep him home safe. Being a soldier was clearly what he lived for.
I think this movie was done in such a way that it coveys a powerful message to the audience. It was really eye-opening to see how much veterans such as Chris Kyle go through during post-war time. Those who suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder have extreme challenges to face during their everyday life, and that goes on to greatly affect their families as well.
In the end, Kyle ends up getting murdered by a fellow veteran he tried to help, who was in fact suffering from a severe mental illness after he returned from war. The impact this message delivers to those who do not know much about PTSD, or who underestimate its severity, can only benefit people around the nation.
I think this movie was entertaining, compelling, and exciting to watch. The director did an amazing job of putting the story together in a way that kept me at the edge of my seat the entire time. To sum it all up, I would highly recommend this movie to anyone because it shows what war heroes must go through to do their job and makes you truly appreciate what they do for our country.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This NOT a political movie but just trying to give people a glimpse at what Chrus Kyle and his family had to go through. Liberals will say we shouldn't have gone to Iraq Blah blah etc. put that aside and think about what decisions Chris Kyle had to make about killing women and children. what mother would give a child a grenade to throw at Americans. What kinda of person would drill holes in a defenseless child's hand and shoot a defenseless father, What child would pick a a RPG to shoot at Americans? There are real evil people in this world and Chris Kyle had to make a decision to save American lives or not. Many say a real sniper wouldn't have done this or that out in the field. I say it's still a movie and I believe Mr. Eastwood was trying to convey the emotions and the situations of how Chris Kyle felt probably not to a T as Hollywood still take liberties in interpreting the book. We had snipers in the revolutionary war to take out the British no one complains.. We had snipers in WW to kill Nazis ( liberal would call them disgruntled Germans) no one complains. Chris Kyle kept going back more to save American lives that was more his mind set than anything political.
I felt this movie made me feel Chris Kyle anguish and torment and how Taya felt when he came home zombie like.

This is a bio-pic, a story of Chris Kyle, the most lethal American sniper in US military history. Chris Kyle did four tours in Iraq.
He would accompany his unit, eliminating the threat to Marines when they go door to door searching for insurgents.
Clint Eastwood, the director of this movie, does not shy away from psychological problems that many veterans, including Chris, experience after coming back home and entering a normal life. Eastwood pays tribute to Chris's achievements and honestly shows extreme difficulties soldiers face in a battle and upon coming back home.
Battle scenes are very intense, dramatic and believable. The movie in some way reminded me of "Hurt Locker", but this film is about a real person, and not fictional.
Nominated for six Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Actor.

Also, the film is well shot immersing you in the really well done battle scenes, which is enriched by the excellent use of surround sound and a solid score. When the film ended, for reasons that anyone who is familiar with the actual people and events this film is based on, there was this uncomfortable silence in the theater the likes of which I’ve never felt before. This is a film that will entertain, engage, and unnerve. You shouldn’t just see this film because you are trying to do Oscar homework because it is a well-made film that has sold out three weekends in a role in my local theater for a reason. If you are under 21, and a young adult not a little kid, I’d strongly recommend you try to see this. Get your older friends or your parents to take you (this isn’t one of those films that shouldn’t watch with your parents) because it is worth it. One of the best of the year/Oscar season and I congratulate the film on its Oscar nominations. Expand

Starring Bradley Cooper, this movie is a nice action, family-drama film. The action scenes were really well made, they looked very realistic; and it was pretty cool watching how the story is alternating between war scenes and family scenes, looking very believable and fluid. Bradley Cooper did mainly an excellent job, and all the crew also. Sadly, the main character is the only one you are going to care about during all the film, for you never really feel attached to the others, being this a big script problem, more than an acting problem. I didn`t really like how the movie is a little slow and has this grey, depressing aspect. Expand

I see some of the lower score reviews are not unbiased movie reviews but more likely liberal rants from people that are afraid to use the term Islam when naming the violent enemies of not only America but of most first world nations on the planet. Having had a close family member pull two tours in Iraq, i can say this is one of the first movies that really helps a civilian understand a little of the torment and pain and sacrifice our soldiers experience. This is good enough that Cooper and Eastwood deserve Oscars. They don't delve too deeply into the struggling wife, but Sienna Miller does a good job in her role. Though we all know what happened to Kyle, I'm also glad the ending of the movie was handled with grace and didn't put us through too much agony. Expand

Thank God there are people like this or our country would be another Sudan, Nigeria or Syria. It also brought awareness of the impact on these men and women and their families and the aftermath of PTSD and attempting to adjust. And yes, adults giving children explosive to kill others are savages and men drilling holes into the heads of children because of the "crime" of their parents, cutting off body parts of women and skinning other men alive are savages. And I would not have any hesitation or remorse for killing them too. Moral is getting rid of evil and most Iraqis were killed by Iraqis. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Found this latest " Kill For Peace" movie second rate.
Unlike " The Hurt Locker" or "Full Metal Jacket" or "Apocalypse Now"
there is very little drama, and no tension.
Second, the sound is so bad they should have used subtitles. And the plot ? A young , coming from a
simplistic, brutal background ,graduates from killing deer to to killing other people from far away. He likes it, and goes back for four tours of duty.
I couldn't connect with, identify or like the hero. Not quite a walk out
but close.

Would have been better off seeing " Paddington".

The story is as usual a heroic tale of a Navy Seal with many tense action scenes, and quite of bit of drama as well so if u are expecting a Call of Duty shootout movie then u will be a little disappointed. Bradley Cooper is great and he deserves an Oscar for his performance. The downsides to the movie are that it is a bit long and drags on some dramatic scenes. You can feel that the movie is trying hard to fill in as many aspects of the hero's life as possible but it sometimes tries too hard and feels tedious. Still it is a good movie and well worth the $; just don't expect it to be a war movie with 100% action throughout. It is more of a biographical film of a heroic soldier and his life. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm not much for war movies but I enjoyed this one. It seems most people's complaints are how this movie is a "patriotic, war-mongering, propaganda piece," but I didn't see that at all. Me and my wife thought that the film somewhat satired the "patriotic, war-mongering, propaganda" agenda due to the portrayal of gungho soldiers ready to get revenge for fallen comrades that ends up becoming an endless cycle of verve and loss. After all, it seems that humanity is the enemy itself, not just the Iraqi militants. Yes, the main character depicted loves and fights for his country, but the film captures his loss of humanity and purpose as the "fight for freedom" melds into a trophy hunt of revenge.

For those saying Cooper's, Chris Kyle is represented as having no depth and only as a mindless soldier, he has clear progressions and regressions of character in the movie. The effects of war dull his emotions but it's blatant that during those tours, war is home for him. This sacrifices his ability to cope and interact with civilian life, well depicted.

I do agree, however, that a movie paralleling both lives of the snipers in this film would have been great. Definitely worth a watch at the theaters or when it comes out to rent.

The film stirs a massive controversy in the states albeit it has achieved a career peak for the octogenarian film legend, as there is a pungent odour of jingoism permeating the narrative, particularly centres on its defamatory depiction of Muslin race in the Iraqi war zone, what is exacerbating is that under the current international circumstances, it doesn’t help to dissipate the acute prejudice in the stateside, pitifully, Eastwood could not been more open-minded in his well-executed anti-war drama.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Penny Marshall goes to Iraq would have been less mawkish and heavy handed. That said, Cooper was very believable and without his stability the movie would have failed. The Iraq action scenes were fantastic and engaging, although by Tour 4 I had had enough (probably the point, but still). The non-Iraq scenes were very flat to me. The last 20 minutes or so were even more manipulative than the preceding 90. While I honor the military and respect those who fight for their country in service, I am not sure this movie helps the cause. I think a film more centered on the PTSD and VA aspects post-war would have been more engaging, although I realize the Chris Kyle story requires build-up of his 'legend'. And why was he holding that cocked pistol on his wife at the end? Expand

It's difficult to judge what the overall goal was - on one hand, you feel like Chris Kyle is a true hero; the other, it's sad what he went through to get there.
Very well-made with a flash-forward action sequence in the beginning, then a few flash-backs, then back to the "present-day" as it continues along. Very well presented.
I'd say if this movie was released over Christmas time in the large formats, it would have been a slam-dunk for a movie instead of the bland re-hashes out there.
In summary, if you want to examine the physique of a sniper, this movie delves in part to it. The other half however, does not present itself well - is the unexamined life worth living/dyeing?

As a veteran of the Iraq War, I can say the movie was mediocre. The minutiae was right, almost spot on, but the protagonist was simplistic to the point of idiocy. It does a great job of summing up the experience of a generation. Partying, no care in the world, then 9/11 and an urge to serve. To the streets of Baghdad and the brown desert air.

What it doesn't do a good job is showing any reaction in Kyle. He just is. No reasoning to be a SEAL (Trust me, 3 hours of freezing your balls off will make you quit if don't have a damn good reason). No introspection when he plugs a kid, when his wife pleads with him to come home, or when his teammates die. He just grunts and says "God, Country, Family.." The characters around him are so much more interesting and more deserving of a movie. Kyle is just super-soldier, who grunts at the sign of danger and leads his flock (to an early death most often). He lacks any introspection.

Add the fact that it is pretty one-sided, etc. It just lacks all depth. I just don't get the idea that Kyle was anything more than a simpleton with a gun. I haven't read the book, and with all the stuff that has happened afterwards, I'm not sure I want to. I've met enough Psychopaths and simple minds in the military. I can understand, but I can't condone blanket racism or psychopathic blood lust. But I understand what part of the soul those things arise from. Of course, I believe that most people don't succumb to those things. Kyle seems to be the kind of person who did succumb.

Overall, I'm glad the movie was made. It does at least portray the Forest Gump version of the Iraq War, and start the conversation. It's better to know that those who did not volunteer actively hate you, than to assume they just couldn't run a mile. I'm glad the chicken hawks have a new Rambo to pretend to be on the weekend. Finally, I'm glad that at least America cares again, while somewhere in Afghanistan, heroes are still doing dangerous things while we watch insipid movies. I just hope no one asks me what shooting kids was like after this....

"American Sniper" valorizes, guns, father teaching a son to use the gun and kill, muslim's xenophobia and arrogance not Altruism as heroism.
In a time where children are killing children in schools; in name of God terrorists are killing innocents around the world and a huge part of the humanity is being named terrorist just because its religion and the religious xenophobia around the world is gaining more space in society and it is so wrong.. This movie timing is awful.
Art for the masses has not to be historically accurate but "American Sniper" is so lame & socially irresponsible, domestically & worldwide for all reasons above.
Sorry.... But in my POV. You can't say that the art from a genius filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl, who did institutional movies for the German nazista govern, was historical wrong and the meh movie from Clint Eastwood is not. Guarded the proportion, it is the same...
Art is art, but the industry has to have the responsibility of the time that a piece of art is out there. World is in the middle of a social mess (the last months and weeks have dozens of examples) and this movie just brings a bad image for Americans around the world. The American people doesn't deserves it. They are suffering with it.

After such films such as Jersey Boys (ha), Clint finally realized his talent again in this intense Iraq war character study. The film follows unflinching legendary sniper Navy Seal Chris Kyle as he completes four tours in the war, all the while watching his squad mates die and his wife beg him to come home. Bradley Cooper does an excellent job portraying Kyle; just one look at his character's face, and you know he's seen it all. Also, the cinematography is stunning, and the brilliant screenplay that never euphemizes the horrors going on makes the viewer on edge the whole film with its unpredictability.

On the whole, this is a very good film, and definitely one of the best made about the Iraq war as of yet. Yes, it has some minor flaws and plot devices, but the bigger aspirations of the film are the ones that count.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As everyone knows, Clint Eastwood’s AMERICAN SNIPER (2015) is, as of this writing (January 24, 2015), a surprise smash hit in the United States. Various postulates as to its success have been formulated: its belated offering of Iraq War cartharsis or even justification; its tight filtering of historical events through a single, largely sympathetic protagonist (memorably played by Bradley Cooper); or simply a highly effective publicity campaign. My own suspicion is that the film is fundamentally about war-themed video games – or rather, is a successful attempt to capitalize on those games’ colossal popularity.
That the film’s iconography, sensibility and rhythm are at one with such games is too obvious to require comment: even I’ve played enough to know that. But I think that part of what the film does is convince its audience that playing those games is actually a form of civic participation, requiring concentration, commitment and self-sacrifice.
Clint lets the cat out of the bag near the end of the film, when Chris Kyle’s kids are playing some game or other (“Level 4, daddy!”), but I think it’s best to read the atavistic scenes of “hunting” in the film as figures for the perceptual (and political) pedagogy offered by war-video games. In other words, what the film does is construct one of those good ol’ four-level allegories familiar from medieval times, enabling the private wargames-player (the “moral” level) to insert him/herself into the “legend” of Chris Kyle (the “typological” level), and thereby connect to the larger destiny of the imperial nation as such (the “anagogical” level). The “literal” level, the history of the Iraq conflict, serves as nothing more than material for these figurations, to be arranged and rearranged like the body parts in the torture chamber.
The point of doing this, of course, is to siphon off some of the enormous libidinal/capital investment in such games - the film is doing huge business! - by providing a gratifying political emplotment of that investment (as a form of civic commitment). After all, you can even jeopardize your precious family life if you spend too much time trying to defeat the (computerized or “savage”) enemy: yet despite these existential risks, the vindication will come, draped in the flag, somewhere down the road….

It doesn’t tell the whole story of the war in Iraq or any war. It doesn’t have to. A movie should entertain and some movies can also provoke thought and feeling on a deeply emotional and philosophical level. American Sniper does all of these.

Many critics of the movie have said that the movie doesn’t say enough. That it glosses over complexities of war, or that it allows its action sequences to obfuscate what should be a message about the horrors of war for all sides. The film has been criticized as jingoistic, propagandistic and for glorifying war.

People have criticized that it has inspired some to express their anger and hatred toward Muslims, as though 9/11, airport security, continued terror attacks and widespread expression of hatred by Muslims against America and the West have nothing to do with it.

When a film tries to deal with all the complexities of a subject such as war it can’t help but become preachy. This film doesn’t do that. It exposes us to the complexities in a very real way. It doesn’t try to explain the unexplainable; it just allows us to observe and feel it.

Bradley Cooper does a great job. But for me Clint Eastwood has done a magnificent job as a director. I loved “The Pianist,” and was very happy that Roman Polanski won the Oscar. I love Clint Eastwood’s direction of “American Sniper” for the same reason. The direction disappears.

So many directors think that tricks, gimmicks, angles and effects are what it’s all about in trying to impress an audience. The miracle of filmmaking is when a director can present a story that pulls you in and puts you there; you aren’t watching something created; you are part of the creation, and the hand of the director is invisible.

Bravo Clint.

This film is just total progaganda: Americans are heroes and true warriors whilst the rest are savages and bad guys and none of them can be trusted. It doesn't even fully cover the post traumatic stress soldiers can end up having, that's just something that's there. Also, Bradley coopers face doesn't look right as a cowboy, completely miscast. However, he still acts fine in the film really! There wasn't any real stand out scenes in this movie either really, and i found the whole back and forth war to home transitions a little forced. Also, the villains they make in the film feel unnecessary and kinda stupid. I'm pretty sure they weren't in the book either and apparently the film just takes a big dump on the source material. The film is still decent enough to watch, but it is so propaganda orientated and a bit dull. I wanted to really see how Chris Kyle evolved. The ending was pretty meh also. I wish they could have honoured the soldier a little better than this film does! Expand

Reading through some of the comments it's clear that this movie threatens the liberal fantasy world where those defending us are some how evil, and those who are truly evil are somehow the victims.

Chris Kyle was a sniper who killed people who were vicious, heartless, and cared little for the value of human life. The film is an insight into the perspective of one man who fought in the war, and the complexity that comes with being a soldier. It allows us to see what Kyle experienced both as a soldier and as a husband, and the difficulty in being both.

This is not a rehashing of events, or a piece of propaganda as some would have you believe, but rather it is a powerful insight into what the men and women in our military experience, and demonstrates why those of us who aren't in the military, owe our servicemen a tremendous debt of gratitude.

I figured that Clint Eastwood and Bradley Cooper were going to be a perfect combination for this movie, but it didn't reach my expectation. Cooper was great as he often is and although he likely won't win an Oscar for this performance it will go down as one of his greatest. Chris Kyle just had such an incredible and difficult background to jam into a 2 hour movie and I felt that they were trying to rely too much on the action and not enough on the drama. I was glad that they incorporated the effects of PTSD during this movie. Just to show that Chris Kyle had some demons. The last 20 minutes were the past of the movie that were the best. Expand

Despite the subject matter, the movie has a relatively low-key presentational feel, and presents setting and events in a very neutral way. There is a sense of calm, objective narration which allows the audience to notice the significance of key points without needing the usual exaggeration or dramatic highlighting to draw their attention. In particular, the physical and psychological costs of military service to Chris Kyle, some of his compatriots, and his brother are made clear without melodrama or overt contrivances.

His meeting with his future wife, their marriage, and the increasingly stressful absences from his growing family during tours, punctuated by eventful calls home, provide the essential notes of what proves to be a tragic love story, given his unexpected and untimely death in 2013, only a few years
after his honorable discharge. As a recent news item, I assume this doesn't constitute a "spoiler".

The film has reportedly demonstrated broad appeal among both art house film fans and general audiences, and I've read a number of reviews suggesting that the presentation is compatible with diverse ideologies. I think the neutral tone contributes to this.

It's intended as a dramatic depiction of a true story, rather than simply being "inspired by" or "based on" real people and events (as with, for example, "The Imitation Game"). It is therefore constrained as to the kind of plot it could have or events it could contain without violating the integrity of the
film. The movie benefited from this by being less "Hollywood", at the price of having a plot which is in one sense less intense than something explicitly tailored to trigger audience response. That said, I would rate it very highly among the war and military-related movies I've seen, with the understanding that it's a straight drama, not an action/adventure or suspense/thriller film.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I gave this movie a low rating for Hollywood technical FAILS ! Just watched the 2 trailers for this movie. In the first 45 seconds I picked out 7 things wrong that a trained sniper , or an Expert Navy SEAL Sniper would never, ever do. 1. Not have his scope covered sometimes in the movie, 2. Not having his mat in front of his weapon to prevent air from the shot disturbing the dust in front of him and revealing his position, 3. Not covering his G-shock watch to prevent sun reflections, 4. Not covering his compass on his shoulder to prevent sun reflections, 5. his spotter/soldier next to him wearing highly reflective goggles, 6. not covering his ammo to prevent sun reflections, 7. A sniper would most definitely not being clearing rooms and teaching regular troops how to do it.

I've read several accounts of how things in Chris's book have been changed to be very different than the movie. Not sure why Clint did not keep it accurate to the books as the accuracy of facts would not have detracted from the movie. Other specs ops in the SEAL family have also made similar comments.

This is not Saving Private Ryan where there, the battle scenes were extremly realistic and quite accurate to the real D-Day event, most of the inconsistencies lie within the names of people in the movie as well as names of battles and cities. Not in the actual portrayal of the soldiers and the events on D-Day.

Chris was definitely a hero with skills, no doubt or argument there. He was no better and no worse than the other thousands of troops that lay their life on the line everyday or the ones who have fought and died for this country in any war. Everyone who enlists in the military is a hero.

In a year filled with biopics and the many re-tellings of history, American Sniper is a stand-out. Similar to Unbroken American Sniper is way more than a war movie. It tells the story of a hero who just happened to earn the honor during a time of war. Bradley Cooper disappears into Chris Kyle, in what is one of his best performances to date. Kyle may have been the most lethal sniper of all time, who killed more than 150 people, but at the end of the day it doesn't matter. Not since The Unforgiven has a film really shown the pain that man faces after he has killed another man. In movies today we too often see characters kill other characters like it's no big deal but that isn't the story in American Sniper. Kyle was a normal man with a wife and two kids. He felt pain and it's a pain that so many veterans feel today. American Sniper made apparent the talent that we all know Eastwood possess; sadly it's a talent that we have seen less and less of in recent years. American Sniper is a great film in whole filmed with some of the most suspensful and moving scenes to come out of the year; above all the film is topped by an amazing and unforgettable performance by Bradley Cooper Expand

Throughout Chris's life he had tragedies. From his friends to himself. There has been speculation that Kyle was more of a **** than the movie shows. This might be true but he still shrived to help his fellow marines and fellow people out. He said that he loved killing the enemy. I don't mind this because....they were the enemy. Like he said, he will stand proud and answer to every shot he took to his creator. The ending is where it left our theater silent. You could hear a pin drop because people didn't expect something like that.
The best part is Cooper's performance. From Hangover to this, Bradley has completely revamped his career. Another great part of this was story, it just kept you engaged and the dialgogue was on point. The amazing part of this is...it's all real. These men went through this as they tried to fight for out freedoms. Give them respect that they deserved. For all the evil, it was done by people who told them to do it. He had unstoppable power to get the job done and protect those he loved the most. Overall it's the best or one of the best movies to this early 2015. 9.3.

However, I can't help thinking the reason most went to see this movie is so that we can breed more Chris Kyles to fight these sneaky wars where they use children, women, families and their own snipers to give their lives for a ridiculous cause: Killing Americans because they are financial successful and have religious freedom. Of course, when these Chris Kyles get back home, we'll have another problem, which is why he was volunteering, and why he was killed. But first we have to get rid of, or at least make a dent, into that evil in the world that affects our lives. If it takes a Chris Kyle, then so be it. The message in this movie is powerful. The world is crazy, and it's sad to say, we sometimes need people like Chris Kyle to give us a temporary respite. Negotiating or reasoning with them hasn't worked, so, shoot to kill. But I don't find Chris Kyle to be honorable, and certainly no hero. The truly honorable sharp-shooter was Sergeant Alvin York in WWI. That's a true hero who killed only when his fellow soldiers were being killed. In that case, he had no choice and although an admitted pacifist, he also said the same thing Kyle said almost 100 years later, Alvin also killed to save lives. Expand

Clint Eastwood did an amazing job directing this film, and I can understand why Chris Kyle picked him to direct it. Something that made this movie so unique was how it touched upon the character's personal life back at home, rather than just the action and war scenes. In comparison to Lone Survivor, that personal background is definitely something that was missing. This movie accurately portrays Chris Kyle as the hero that he was, the number of lives that he took is far less than the number of lives he saved. The way that he died truly bothered me for days until I saw his wife talking on national news. One thing she talked about was how Chris died. She said that the way he died really portrayed who he was as a person. He died helping a veteran, and it goes to show that he truly was a service person, always doing good for others in any way that he could. Expand

A bible thumping father breeds his son's killer instinct. The United States government turns him into an invincible war machine. We thank our Armed forces for sacrificing their souls for our safety.
For no matter the extent of their physical damages, a tour of duty leaves emotional scars that run deep - so beautifully captured in Coming Home and Born on the Fourth of July. Cooper's Chris Kyle is the only character fleshed out- so American Sniper misses the target by focusing on his personal battle and home life ; instead of the juxtaposition between him and his arch enemy "the butcher". Homeland builds more tension in one 40 minute episode. And as in the Imitation Game, Mr. Eastwood leaves the most powerful scene to our imagination by putting it in words in the final credits-- so before we can digest the ramifications- the house lights are up. I call this a cheap shot

How can someone who killed 200+ people be called a legend? Sociopath, if he was not before, certainly he became one.

How Eastwood who calls himself libertarian and who on numerous occasions took a stance against war and against guns, could make such a movie is unexplainable.

I am happy I did not pay anything for seeing it. Would be a waste of money.

American Sniper is a film about war; however, unlike most other war movies this film is also a film about how war stays with a soldier when they come home. This film does a great job of portraying the horrors of PTSD, a disease that many soldiers suffer from. The downside to this film though is the director, Clint Eastwood. During some scenes it seemed as if Clint Eastwood was trying to depict all people living in that area as "Savages". In the world we are living in, there is a lot of bigotry and xenophobia around the world especially in America. But through and through this is a good movie and is worth your time to watch. TheClint Eastwood applies his typical macho style to this superficially entertaining but cliché ridden war drama. Think of an inferior ‘Hurt Locker and substitute a beefed up Bradley Cooper in place of the slighter built Jeremy Renner. The film’s biggest liability is the screenplay which doesn’t have an original idea through its entire running time. As usual we have to endure the obligatory scenes of boys being boys and their irritating training routines. We watch dispassionately as Cooper’s marriage to Sienna Miller begins to combust as the war and his job as a sniper take their toll. We roll our eyes in disbelief at scenes where Cooper partakes of personal phone calls to Miller whilst at work in the war zone (Would that really be allowed to happen?). The end credits inform us that this is a true story and that the protagonist, Chris Kyle, was killed by a war veteran he was trying to help. Arrogantly, though, we are not privy to any further helpful information like why and how! It’s as if Director Eastwood feels that everyone will have heard of Kyle and know his story. That maybe so in America, but unfortunately does not apply to the rest of the world.
On the plus side the film is at least never boring and is actually very well edited. Cooper is very good and Miller, despite being saddled with some truly awful dialogue and the worst written scenes (her first introduction at the bar not withstanding), also acquits herself with dignity. The Oscar nominated sound is undeserving of the laurel, and one scene in which Cooper plays around with a gun in the family home struck me as being dangerously irresponsible in a film which has undoubted commercial appeal.

Now, I don't think it's a masterpiece. There's a bit of bluntness to the filmmaking, and I think Eastwood has directed movies with more sophistication and nuance before, but this is still a very exciting and well made war film. The battles are very intense and engrossing. The characters also felt extremely well brought to life. The human drama here is very well done. A lot of it's power comes from the completely convincing performances. This is almost certainly the best acting Cooper has ever done. He adds layers of depth to Chris and you're sympathetic for his character every step of the way. Sienna Miller also delivers a very good performance, and her character never feels underwritten or like a cliché. Clint Eastwood and Bradley Cooper have put together an exceptionally entertaining and moving tribute to a true hero, and they deserve major props for doing so. Expand

They spout typical liberal nonsense, as if Nazi snipers are the same as American snipers. Libs are too intolerant and uncritical to understand that distinctions make a difference. There is nothing propaganda about this movie. It shows multiple views of the war and follows one man's attempt to do his job and struggle with the personal consequences of war. There is no sugar coating the issues. People who dismiss it as such have not seen it, or, they see it through tainted lenses--intent preceding content.
When it's a liberal themed film, they call it "wonderful, powerful, insightful, important, brave, revealing, speaking truth to power", and all the rest. When it's a conservative film, or perceived as such, it's mindless, goose-stepping propaganda. Ridiculous. This movie is great!

What I saw in a packed theater at the end is applause followed by filing out in virtual silence. You can tell the veterans who were at the movie just by looking at the faces of those exiting. As a veteran myself, I could not but be affected by the long buried feelings that came to the surface during the movie. I would caution those who saw combat action, especially those with PTSD to seriously think before seeing it, and if you do, don't go alone. Expand

I enjoyed all of this movie from beginning to end. The only thing I could find wrong is they overdid Kyle making him look almost superheroish with a arch enemy out there finding him though multiple tours. We the audience did not need that with Kyle's story being interesting enough in itself. I loved the evolution of the vehicles and equipment from his first tour to his last. I found that and many specifics of the war to be so accurate it was spooking me out being a OIF veteran myself. Expand

An unflinching character study of an American Patriot.

Say what you want about the morality of American involvement in military conflicts - "American Sniper" is still a great movie.

Eastwood tackles the subject matter in quintessential "America Good, everyone else Bad" mindset. It's about time people start understanding the moral complexities that arise in these battles.
