One of the major tenets of Clint Eastwood's ebullient career is his commitment to surprising us. He continually pursued unexpected projects - from female boxing to the Japanese wartime point of view. If you were to guess who was going to direct The Bridges of Madison County (1995) or Jersey Boys (2014), Eastwood would be near the bottom of the list.

In 2014 he accomplished one of his best surprises. After years in which he seemed to have lost his touch and even his spirit, Eastwood came roaring back.

American Sniper is essential Eastwood. The film - based on actual sniper Chris Kyle (Bradley Cooper) who served four tours in Iraq - has intriguing levels and potency. Ennio Morricone's music at the end brings Eastwood's phenomenal career echoing back.

Eastwood can make films that appeal both to conservatives and liberals. That's a rare ability. American Sniper is one of those films.… Expand

Clint Eastwood's American Sniper is probably the best movie featuring the War on Terror that has been made. In it, our hero, Chris Kyle played by Bradley Cooper is presented as a young man growing up in Texas and we see that his girlfriend isClint Eastwood's American Sniper is probably the best movie featuring the War on Terror that has been made. In it, our hero, Chris Kyle played by Bradley Cooper is presented as a young man growing up in Texas and we see that his girlfriend is cheating on him. Later, he meets his beautiful wife played by Sienna Miller in a bar. We see Chris Kyle react to the September 11th attacks and he enlists in the military to fight terrorists in the middle east. Kyle is deployed in Iraq and we see his escapades as the most deadly sniper in the U.S. military. Iraq had been listed as a State sponsor of terrorism by the U.S. since 1990, when Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait. Iraq had also been on the list from 1979 to 1982; it was removed so that the U.S. could provide material support to Iraq in its war with Iran. Hussein's regime had proven to be a problem for the UN and Iraq's neighbors due to its use of chemical weapons against Iranians and Kurds in the 1980s. The Iraq War began in March 2003 with an air campaign, which was immediately followed by a U.S.-led ground invasion. The Bush administration cited UNSC Resolution 1441, which warned of "serious consequences" for violations such as Iraq possessing weapons of mass destruction. The Bush administration also stated the Iraq war was part of the War on Terror, as Saddam Hussein was a radical Sunni muslim, leader of the Baathist party who may have had ties to Al-Queda. The movie is gripping, and you're pulling for Kyle who is tough and gallant. One criticism I have of the movie is it doesn't show many airstrikes, it only features one in the entire movie, when I know we bombed the hell out of Iraq. But it wants to focus on the sniping on the ground so its acceptable. The movie can get pretty exciting and intense. There are some cool action sequences with American marines going up against terrorists. The movie does a good job depicting PTSD caused by the trauma of war, as Kyle has to deal with these problems after his exploits in the middle east. There is a well-directed scene at a barbeque where Kyle freaks out with a dog and it disturbs his wife. The movie ends tragically, as we are told Chris Kyle is killed by a mentally disturbed veteran he was trying to help. Overall, a good tribute to an American although controversial, was virtuous and a hero.… Expand

Pretty good movie I love how this movie gets you to like the charters and care about. I now that a lot of people hate this movie ( that is fine) but just because it takes place in the Iraq war does mean this movie is propaganda. I'm a liberal and I actually enjoyed this movie. I know that seems like a glowing contradiction because liberals aren't supposed to like things like this but I like to think I consider myself impartial when it comes to movies. The movie is masterfully directed by Clint Eastwood and Bradley Cooper does an amazing job as Chris Kyle but with that being said, American Sniper was as close as you can get to being right-wing propaganda. The first thing it does as portray the Iraqis as the bad guys who are responsible for 9/11 despite them having nothing to do with 9/11. The 2nd thing this movie does wrong is paint Chris Kyle as a conflicted soldier, where if you read his book he actually was not very remorseful about the people he killed. I mean lets be real here, Chris Kyle was an absolutely terrible person. I'll go even as far to say he was a psychopath, he said it himself that he loved killing and that he would kill anyone with a kuron which is what basically everyone wears over there. Kyle was no hero, he was a monster, a repulsive and sick man who was a pathological liar that forged his military accomplishments and kill count to sell books. He was also, however like many soldiers in the middle east were taken advantage of by Bush/Cheney's quest for "WMD"s aka oil.… Expand

The moral subtext is where criticism is warranted as this is a film which posits the hero as a representative of the entire conflict in Iraq and, as such, any commentary on the nature of war or that particular conflict is decidedly one-dimensional. This may be expected from an Eastwood film, however, it's clear that not only is the moral quandry not central to the plot, it is also treated with disdain in the dialogue, which may play well for an American audience, but smacks of the 'MURICA mentality rather than good storytelling. A solid bo-yah film with little depth. 6.86/10… Expand

While not for the faint hearted, the often harrowing "American Sniper" is a solid if not spectacular war epic by Clint Eastwood. It is well acted by its leads and delivers a tense tribute to the late American sniper, Chris Kyle.

absolutely the best movie of the year, the depth that Eastwood and Cooper nail the looks and feel of being deployed. The feeling of not being over there and helping, with people you will grow closer to than even those in your family, isabsolutely the best movie of the year, the depth that Eastwood and Cooper nail the looks and feel of being deployed. The feeling of not being over there and helping, with people you will grow closer to than even those in your family, is really captured in Coopers face while sitting at the VA. It became really hard to hold back the tears during the credits as they showed the love and support that Chief Kyle received after his passing. Best movie winner, hands down.… Expand

This is a movie with a lot of idiots saying this and that about it. Simply it's intense, inspiring, and sad. Throughout Chris's life he had tragedies. From his friends to himself. There has been speculation that Kyle was more of a **** thanThis is a movie with a lot of idiots saying this and that about it. Simply it's intense, inspiring, and sad. Throughout Chris's life he had tragedies. From his friends to himself. There has been speculation that Kyle was more of a **** than the movie shows. This might be true but he still shrived to help his fellow marines and fellow people out. He said that he loved killing the enemy. I don't mind this because....they were the enemy. Like he said, he will stand proud and answer to every shot he took to his creator. The ending is where it left our theater silent. You could hear a pin drop because people didn't expect something like that.
The best part is Cooper's performance. From Hangover to this, Bradley has completely revamped his career. Another great part of this was story, it just kept you engaged and the dialgogue was on point. The amazing part of this is...it's all real. These men went through this as they tried to fight for out freedoms. Give them respect that they deserved. For all the evil, it was done by people who told them to do it. He had unstoppable power to get the job done and protect those he loved the most. Overall it's the best or one of the best movies to this early 2015. 9.3.… Expand

The battles are very intense and engrossing. The characters also felt extremely well brought to life. The human drama here is very well done. A lot of it's power comes from the completely convincing performances. This is almost certainly the best acting Cooper has ever done. He adds layers of depth to Chris and you're sympathetic for his character every step of the way. Sienna Miller also delivers a very good performance, and her character never feels underwritten or like a cliché. Clint Eastwood and Bradley Cooper have put together an exceptionally entertaining and moving tribute to a true hero, and they deserve major props for doing so.… Expand

I see some of the lower score reviews are not unbiased movie reviews but more likely liberal rants from people that are afraid to use the term Islam when naming the violent enemies of not only America but of most first world nations on the planet. Having had a close family member pull two tours in Iraq, i can say this is one of the first movies that really helps a civilian understand a little of the torment and pain and sacrifice our soldiers experience. This is good enough that Cooper and Eastwood deserve Oscars. They don't delve too deeply into the struggling wife, but Sienna Miller does a good job in her role. Though we all know what happened to Kyle, I'm also glad the ending of the movie was handled with grace and didn't put us through too much agony.… Expand

Fantastic movie that you should watch NOW!!!! from the acting to the explosions to the dialogue it's all great, I think it portrays well what Navy seals have to go through, and the impact on their mind when they go home. Truly a beautiful movie.

There is nothing propaganda about this movie. It shows multiple views of the war and follows one man's attempt to do his job and struggle with the personal consequences of war. There is no sugar coating the issues. People who dismiss it as such have not seen it, or, they see it through tainted lenses--intent preceding content.
When it's a liberal themed film, they call it "wonderful, powerful, insightful, important, brave, revealing, speaking truth to power", and all the rest. When it's a conservative film, or perceived as such, it's mindless, goose-stepping propaganda. Ridiculous. This movie is great!… Expand

It was good, not great. Cooper was great but it was lacking as an overall picture. He was great as a stand alone but you know neither his family life or the PTSD really was focused on/developed (i.e. everything was just touched upon). GoodIt was good, not great. After such films such as Jersey Boys (ha), Clint finally realized his talent again in this intense Iraq war character study. The film follows unflinching legendary sniper Navy Seal Chris Kyle as he completes four tours in the war, all the while watching his squad mates die and his wife beg him to come home. Bradley Cooper does an excellent job portraying Kyle; just one look at his character's face, and you know he's seen it all. Also, the cinematography is stunning, and the brilliant screenplay that never euphemizes the horrors going on makes the viewer on edge the whole film with its unpredictability.

On the whole, this is a very good film, and definitely one of the best made about the Iraq war as of yet. Yes, it has some minor flaws and plot devices, but the bigger aspirations of the film are the ones that count.… Expand

Eastwood is one of my favorite film makers, Every film that he directed it was so marvelously done and had well good style; american sniper, starring Bradley Cooper and Sienna Miler the movie is about: Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle's pinpoint accuracy saves countless lives on the battlefield and turns him into a legend. Back home to his wife and kids after four tours of duty, however, Chris finds that it is the war he can't leave behind; based on the acclaim novel, screenwriter Jason Hall skips the best life moments of Chris Kyle ( like his first kill or when he engaged to his wife). From the writer of the movie that grossed Rotten Tomatoes at five percent " Paranoia" and Spread make a huge improvement in his career as making Cinema History's best American Sniper. Sometimes this movie skips a lot! for example: after Kyle's war happened they didn't tell us when then year was and all of a sudden their children grow FAST in this movie. RING RING RING ! i hear that this movie is gonna be nominated into the oscars, Cooper gets the oscar for best actor and Miller gets the award of best actress! also Clint Eastwood gets an oscar for Best Direction; the action sequences are NOT over ratted and but there entertaining! I am gonna give this movie an A- it has good direction by Eastwood and excellent script by Jason Hall and soulful performance by Bradley Cooper. Grade A-… Expand

As surefooted filmmaking as it gets. This is craft at its peak in all categories. A personal film for Clint in many ways, echoes of his legendary screen past are on view. Bradley should get a nomination.

I generally don't love war movies, only a handful. They are often boring in my opinion, and this drags a bit from some of those same tropes of the genre. A true story said to be accurate, so what can you do? It is a good story if not a really great one.… Expand

Excellent job of directing and editing. Texas accents are spot on which is a real rarity in Hollywood these days. I enjoyed all of this movie from beginning to end. We the audience did not need that with Kyle's story being interesting enough in itself. I loved the evolution of the vehicles and equipment from his first tour to his last. I found that and many specifics of the war to be so accurate it was spooking me out being a OIF veteran myself.… Expand

I find it interesting as to how the public rated the movie at the time of the showing. What I saw in a packed theater at the end is applause followed by filing out in virtual silence. As a veteran myself, I could not but be affected by the long buried feelings that came to the surface during the movie. American Sniper tell the story of Chris Kyle played by Bradley Cooper. Chris was the most lethal sniper in U.S. military history. But there was much more to this true American hero than his skill with a rifle. U.S. Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle is sent to Iraq with only one mission: to protect his brothers-in-arms. His pinpoint accuracy saves countless lives on the battlefield and, as stories of his courageous exploits spread, he earns the nickname "Legend." However, his reputation is also growing behind enemy lines, putting a price on his head and making him a prime target of insurgents. Despite the danger, as well as the toll on his family at home, Chris serves through four harrowing tours of duty in Iraq, becoming emblematic of the SEAL creed to "leave no man behind." But upon returning home, Chris finds that it is the war he can't leave behind.

I remember a time where Clint Eastwood use to make pretty damn good movies. Unforgiven, Changeling, Million Dollar Baby, Gran Torino and Mystic River. All these movie right there are one of his best, but for the last couple of years he's been making some bad or really boring movies that forgot about. Until American Sniper came out and at last his back on track of what made him good in the first place, because American Sniper is a great movie.

Bradley Cooper in this movie dose a Oscar worthy performance and...wait a minute, his nominated for one. Now that's what I like to see. Cooper really played Chris Kyle so well that I think this is my favorite performance from him, because he got all the stress, all the hard work to protect his family & country and war itself effecting you from the people you killed, and Bradley Cooper got the character right and showed that he was only human.

The directing from Client Eastwood was nothing but great. With his other films (And I'm talking about the bad ones) his movie always have this slow paste feel to them making it uninteresting, but with this it's always going and it never slows down. I'm not talking about the action that makes the movie more quick past, no I'm talking about the movie characters and it's sense of atmosphere of intense and quick reaction and that got my interested from start till finish, and that's brilliant film making by Client Eastwood.

Now for the controversy of this movie: 2014 was the year for controversy and yet it's pretty pointless to start a controversy for this movie over a american hero who may have do some wrong things, but who hasn't in a war zone. The people who started the controversy is only advertising the movie more, I mean just look at the The Interview and how much people sawed that by all the controversy and almost the start of World War 3. The controversy for this movie is by Chris Kyle actions towards Muslims and how the movie adversest him has a perfect war hero, and that's just ridiculous to get all **** about. Chris Kyle probably did some bad things in the battlefield but he also did some good things that saved many solders lives. To those who's criticizing Chris is only adverting the movie more and everybody is going to watch the movie and you going to get a lot of hate for saying that.

Now for problems: The films editing seem to past some important scenes in the movie and I'm not going to say what scenes I mean if I do then I must spoil some scenes. And that's it for problems.

That was a bum because long scenes in the movie just focus on Taya- Kyle's wife played excellently by Sienna Miller. Even though its a touch too long, the battle sequences are some of the best I have seen, the amount of tension is unbelievable and Eastwood nails that. The film becomes ultimately a drama thats too much on the family side than on the war aspect that viewers want to see, thats not a bad thing but they could be shorter. This is a good film, despite some flaws its not only watchable, but its a reminder of American history. American Sniper gets a 7/10 from me.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This NOT a political movie but just trying to give people a glimpse at what Chrus Kyle and his family had to go through. Liberals will say we shouldn't have gone to Iraq Blah blah etc. put that aside and think about what decisions Chris Kyle had to make about killing women and children. what mother would give a child a grenade to throw at Americans. What kinda of person would drill holes in a defenseless child's hand and shoot a defenseless father, What child would pick a a RPG to shoot at Americans? There are real evil people in this world and Chris Kyle had to make a decision to save American lives or not. Many say a real sniper wouldn't have done this or that out in the field. I say it's still a movie and I believe Mr. Eastwood was trying to convey the emotions and the situations of how Chris Kyle felt probably not to a T as Hollywood still take liberties in interpreting the book. We had snipers in the revolutionary war to take out the British no one complains.. We had snipers in WW to kill Nazis ( liberal would call them disgruntled Germans) no one complains. Chris Kyle kept going back more to save American lives that was more his mind set than anything political.
I felt this movie made me feel Chris Kyle anguish and torment and how Taya felt when he came home zombie like.… Expand

I loved the balance between telling a very patriotic, moving story of a hero who wasn't perfect, whose family life was far from perfect, in a war that was very far from perfect.

Chris left no man behind. In doing so, he left his wife and children behind and they also paid a terrible price for our freedom. But if I had been Chris, I don't know that I could or would have done anything different. What choice was there? Let soldiers die that you know you can save, or leave your wife and children in difficult suffering? He went as far as he could and then came home to save his family and himself.

Thankfully, they didn't try to justify or criticize the war. They just told us about a premier hero among many others in the background including Taya. As Chris’ wife and mother of their children, Taya was not one wit less the hero herself. Her mortal life may not have been on the line, but her heart and soul were. Taya not only did 4 tours with Chris, she had to deal with the hardships of this wonderful man when he returned while desperately yearning for the emotional support she needed.

Bradly Cooper and Sienna Miller were outstanding in bringing their story home to us.

They didn’t fully develop the whole story, but what they did, they did so very well.… Expand

So, I originally didn't want to see this movie. Then, I heard an NPR critic say, **roughly** "this movie tries to be so many things and doesn't succeed at any of them." It's just trying to show you the confusion, the memories, the character. It's trying to let you in to the most important memories of a person that went through something confusing, tragic, and unreal. If it doesn't make sense, that's because it's the truth. Welcome to Ulysses, idiot. By idiot, I'm referring to you NPR critic. BTW Clint Eastwood's is at his best when he's this restrained.… Expand

We saw an Advanced Screening of American Sniper last week, and it was awesome. This movie was directed by Clint Eastwood and you can see his hand in it. This movie was directed by Clint Eastwood and you can see his hand in it. It's not flashy, and it tells the story without adding to it like Hollywood tends to do with all war movies, especially ones about the recent wars our men have served in. You feel like you know at least a portion of what a sniper and his SEAL team went through while serving in the Iraq War. But, most importantly, it also tells the story of an EXTRAORDINARY MAN, a true AMERICAN HERO, who devoted much of his life to his country, taking multiple tours to keep "his men" safe, and to protect his country. What an extraordinary movie. I can't say enough about it. Everyone should see this movie. See what this man did for our country. I would also recommend staying through the credits. All the film shown during the ending credits is from actual newsreels. An excellent movie. I wholly recommend it.

Unlike other Hollywood takes on our soldiers, and the war in Iraq, this movie just tells the story. No fluff, no hidden agendas, it just tells the story of who this man was and how much he did for our country. You can tell this movie was based off a book by someone who actually had fought and lived this life. It's very real, and thankfully the book wasn't ruined, like so many are, by embellishments. It doesn't have the flashy coolness that studios tend to do when portraying our Navy SEALS. It's cool to see that, but then you almost feel like what you are seeing is not real, inaccurate, just a Hollywood version of what our SEALs do. Then the other extreme is the hidden anti-war agenda that is always being pushed. This movie just tells the story and after seeing it you feel like you know what it was like to be a SEAL in Iraq. What clearing door to door for insurgents is like and what snipers do for not only their units, but for our country as well. How important they are in our fight against those who hate freedom. This story also shows what sacrifices spouses make in order for their men to be away fighting for their country. It also to me shows the best example of the hyper awareness that occurs and can't help bought be brought home when you have to be unguard constantly when deployed in a hot zone.

I honestly went into this movie thinking there was no way Bradley Cooper could portray Chris Kyle, but was totally wrong in my assumptions. He didn't just portray this larger than life hero, he becomes him. Truly amazing piece of work.… Expand

This was a very good movie. Although it hurt very bad, it was some what very accurate and close to the heart where many feelings and memories were lost or hidden. Bradley Cooper is great and he deserves an Oscar for his performance. The downsides to the movie are that it is a bit long and drags on some dramatic scenes. You can feel that the movie is trying hard to fill in as many aspects of the hero's life as possible but it sometimes tries too hard and feels tedious. Still it is a good movie and well worth the $; just don't expect it to be a war movie with 100% action throughout. It is more of a biographical film of a heroic soldier and his life.… Expand

American Sniper is a movie. It doesn’t tell the whole story of the war in Iraq or any war. It doesn’t have to. A movie should entertain and some movies can also provoke thought and feeling on a deeply emotional and philosophical level.American Sniper is a movie. A movie should entertain and some movies can also provoke thought and feeling on a deeply emotional and philosophical level. American Sniper does all of these.

Many critics of the movie have said that the movie doesn’t say enough. That it glosses over complexities of war, or that it allows its action sequences to obfuscate what should be a message about the horrors of war for all sides. The film has been criticized as jingoistic, propagandistic and for glorifying war.

People have criticized that it has inspired some to express their anger and hatred toward Muslims, as though 9/11, airport security, continued terror attacks and widespread expression of hatred by Muslims against America and the West have nothing to do with it.

When a film tries to deal with all the complexities of a subject such as war it can’t help but become preachy. This film doesn’t do that. It exposes us to the complexities in a very real way. It doesn’t try to explain the unexplainable; it just allows us to observe and feel it.

Bradley Cooper does a great job. But for me Clint Eastwood has done a magnificent job as a director. I loved “The Pianist,” and was very happy that Roman Polanski won the Oscar. I love Clint Eastwood’s direction of “American Sniper” for the same reason. The direction disappears.

So many directors think that tricks, gimmicks, angles and effects are what it’s all about in trying to impress an audience. The miracle of filmmaking is when a director can present a story that pulls you in and puts you there; you aren’t watching something created; you are part of the creation, and the hand of the director is invisible.

This is the story of a true patriot whose love of country knows no bounds and is inspiring to the most callous of disbelievers. Much like the movie "Selma", the subject of the film is greater than the film itself. This is an action packed war picture with lots of action and, true to Mr. Eastwood’s love of the military and the battles they face, shows us the true nature of the conflict and trials and tribulations of the brave men who fight in them and the mental and physical healing that is so critical to their survival. I viewed the film under the best of circumstances in an IMAX theater and still came away feeling that I had seen "another war film" rather than the great piece of film making that is receiving so much revenue, drawing so many crowds and receiving so many craft nominations. The film is much too long and at times the audience feels it is taking these extra tours of duty along with the
characters in the film. I give the film an 8 because it did hold my interest even though it failed the "I never looked at my watch" test..… Expand
