This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Alien 3 is a sequel to Aliens directed by David Fincher. This movie starts off as a major WTF moment because it shows that the Queen from Aliens has laid an egg on board the ship that Ripley, Hicks, and Newt are hypersleeping in. The egg proceeds to open and a facehugger attaches itself to Ripley. The rest of the movie is Ripley trying to survive in a prison while trying to escape an alien which spawned out of a dog. The good things about this movie is that it has mixed feelings from Alien and Aliens, it has pretty good acting, and the Alien is extremely creepy. The bad things are that the Alien CGI is bad, the story is below average, and it has a crappy ending (Ripley dies) and it left me wanting more. Overall, Alien 3 is a mediocre film and sort of a dissapointment because of the bar set by the first two films. Expand

Alien 3 was his directorial debut, and he was given a massive $50 million budget to play with, in addition to having to live up to fans' expectations after the previous two marvellous films, Alien and Aliens, directed by Ridley Scott and the unsinkable James Cameron respectively. He had to start shooting without a script, and 20th Century Fox stuck their noses in the production so many times that I'm surprised he finished the film. But he did. And after all of that, the film turned out just as one would expect with all that going on - messy.

While the first Alien film finishes with Ripley shooting off into space as the lone survivor, with an unknown future ahead of her, the second film shows Ripley accompanied by two other characters (and a damaged robot). Alien 3 had so much potential to capitalise on this, and utilise Hicks and Newt to a great extent, giving Ripley a family of companions to accompany her through her battle with the creatures and The Company. But no. They are callously killed off in the opening titles, with seldom time to mourn them. This is the film's first big mistake, and is guaranteed to leave Aliens fans a little peeved.

The prison story is interesting enough, as Ripley is the lone woman on a barren prison planet full of deadly convicts. Moving on to Alien 3's next big mistake: the creature itself. Quite radically re-designed, this creature seems much less deadly than in previous films, exacerbated further by the tacky special effects. Having spent much of the first two films seeing very little of the creature, which builds fear and tension superbly, this film shows you a little too much, and one realises that the little Xenomorph isn't actually all that scary.

Nonetheless, the film isn't an entire disaster. Sigourney Weaver gives a naturally excellent performance, along with the rest of the cast doing a fine job as well. Furthermore, the musical score in the film is, in my opinion, the best in the Alien franchise. (This is understandable, as composer Elliot Goldenthal was given an entire year alongside David Fincher to finish the score, as opposed to the six or so weeks given to James Horner for Aliens.) And, last but not least, the film's emotional final scene is very well written, with great performances all round. The scene could (and probably should) have given a satisfying conclusion to the franchise, before the nightmarish Alien: Resurrection.

Overall, while the film makes the best out of a bad situation, the problems shine through, and there are far too many flaws in the film to consider it a classic. I wouldn't go so far as to say that Alien 3 and 4 ruin the franchise, but they most certainly put a downer on it. And Alien 3 is responsible for steering it off course. It is probably the worst film of the four. But it's alright, I guess.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. David Fincher's Alien 3 is a very messy film. The characters are pretty good I guess, mostly just Ellen Ripley. The story is a bit convoluted but it wasn't horrible. The CGI in some scenes are a bit stupid looking but I liked the new design for the new "Runner" xenomorph. In the end, this is an enjoyable film but also a big mess. Expand

After two suchFirst, there was the creepy horror of Ridley Scott's atmospheric Alien. Then, some six years later, James Cameron took elements from the first and crafted one of the best science fiction/action films of all time: Aliens. After two such superior efforts, anticipation was high for the third (and final?) installment of the trilogy, especially after early promotional campaigns offered the slogan: "On Earth, everybody can hear you scream."

Alas, Alien 3 is not the movie fans were hoping for. Sigourney Weaver is back as Ellen Ripley, but it's the writing and direction (by music video master David Fincher) more than the acting that lets us down. Plot inconsistencies abound and, by killing off Ripley's surrogate daughter Newt before the movie even begins, much of the emotional underpinning of the previous film has been rendered moot. A character with that much importance in determining the heroine's motivation deserves something more noteworthy than an off-screen murder. (Hicks is dead, too, but he was more disposable).

Alien 3 is, simply put, a mess. The writers have no idea how to tell a coherent, entertaining story. With the exception of a surprise or two, there isn't much worthwhile here. The storyline frequently doesn't make sense, with actions occuring for which no explanation is given. Direction, editing, and camerawork combine with the disjointed script to disorient and confuse the viewer. Given Fincher's background, it shouldn't come as any surprise that the movie looks like a music video. Another lackluster aspect of Alien 3 is its feeble score, while pales in comparison to James Horner's rousing work for Aliens.

The characters are paper-thin, in large part because there are too many of them. Had individuals been better-developed, their uniform unlikability might have been interesting, but, as it is, this trait is off-putting. The few denizens of Alien 3's prison planet given any personality are treated badly by the script. There are a number of action scenes, but, because of certain plot contrivances and an inability to feel for the characters, there's little excitement or suspense. At least the atmosphere is suitably dark and dreary.

As a science fiction or horror film, Alien 3 is barely passable, but, compared to its two predecessors, it's a sorry end to the trilogy. I enjoyed the first two films, but, in their wake, found this one barely watchable and not especially enjoyable.

I've got the whole collection in Christmas 2015 and when I look them all, I really got a reaction which I wasn't expecting. All 4 films have different versions. The first was Alien the Directors Cut, second is Aliens Special Edition which I think the Special Edition version is the highlight for the movie's effort. Why? Well, because Director James Cameron didn't prefer the original version on DVD, he prefer's it to the Special Edition version where you can see the missing scenes. The third is what I'm doing now which I'll tell you that in a minute and the fourth one did the same as the third. The film opens with Ripley getting impregnated by the face hugger and crash landed in a place where she had never been before. The dog is impregnated and the alien had come out of it's stomach and all hell is loose. Yeah, the list goes on. Now let me try and tell you about something of what I haven't seen before is there are missing scenes that wasn't in the original. There's a scene where Charles Dance had find Ripley's body where she crash landed. In the original version though, there are three or four men found Ripley's body along with Newt, Hicks and Bishop. The alien is inside the cow's body or you can call it a ox. Because of this, when you watch the assembly cut version, you will watch the ox get impregnated instead of the dog. And yes, the list goes on! I found the movie a mix bag and yeah, Sigourney Weaver is good but it doesn't save the glory of this science fiction horror with a mess story writing and I don't find the film to depressing. Try watching the assembly cut version, I f£$king dare you! Expand

It's the worst movie of alien's series. There are nothing new in the story compared to the previous alien's movies. It's hard to see that movie was realised by D. Fincher who's an incredible director.

Its a middle of the road sequel that lacks narrative focus, suspense even thought it did some nice things to make it appear not bad. Its easily the most forgettable of the franchise. Expand

It may not be scary as it is, but while taking place in a prison planet may be a good idea, but it got messed up, some of the prisoners are dislikable and crazy, and Ripley has gone intro a echo trip.

Too much nothing to do, it'll make you doze off, and fall asleep. It was not good.

The story is not that good, and boring, mainly due to an unfinished script, and the film almost isn't as scary as the first two films at all, none of this movie have the same power as the first two movie, and the worse is, the scare factor is far below than of its predecessors of the first two films, in fact, the movie feels like a comedy, talking show and doing working and the characters picking up on a street than being a scary and a blockbuster sci-fi movie.

It's very predictable, Usually, you already get to know if the Xenomorph runner is on a prison planet right before the prisoners meet their death by the Xenomorph.

It went through development hell with the movie's quality of the movie suffers from a troubling development, especially regarding the script, it was supposed to be Ripley found herself in Arceon, the wooden planet with a Xenomorph in it, and...well, Twohy's proposed script was rejected and was followed by the first draft of what would become the final shooting script, and it was replaced with the prison planet in the final version of the movie.

Even if the movie tries to have some emotional moments, most of those scenes just have more exposition rather than talking about or showing how they feel or express what anyone loved to do.

There was a false advertising that in the teaser, the announcer states that "on Earth, everyone can hear you scream" implying that it was going to take place on Earth, but as mentioned above, it was actually set on a prison planet, and the Alien would not come to Earth until ''Alien vs. Predator'' in 2004. This is due to the script not being finished by the time the trailer was made. By far, Alien 3 is not a good sequel to the first two movies, well... not as bad as (cough) the fourth (cough) movie.

Special Edition (138 min)

This is me after every attempt this one makes to be an Alien sequel. To be honest, it's visually faithful to the franchise, but it's just the way it looks. The cinematography, as stunning and faithful to the franchise as it is, it neither captures the atmosphere nor the tension of the first two installments. Instead, it just ended up feeling gratuitously grim for the sake of it. Apart from the way it looks, the narrative is even worse. The film has some cool ideas, but it is so predictable and generic at its core. Moreover, it tries to conceal itself under the cloak of the franchise's tropes, and it failed miserably. What's even worse is that it also tries to slightly diverge from its predecessors. The plot, the suspense, the horror elements and the action all take a second seat to "character development and exploration". Well, the characters here can't hold a candle to the effortlessly well-rounded, genuinely characters of the original and its first sequel. Frankly, I didn't mind at first that the decision of discarding all the characters that we became completely invested in in Aliens, but here every try to give the characters some depth comes off as utterly pretentious, and the same goes with most of the lines they deliver, which feel superimposed and unnatural. Ripley and Clemens are the only two characters that I found tolerable. There's no need to say that Sigourney Weaver and Charles Dance are partly responsible for that. But apart from their acting and the chemistry they share, I think the dialogue between them is relatively better or at least slightly more interesting. Overall, though, Alien³ deserves all the notoriety it holds. It's awkward and disgusting and I just hate it, maybe not as much as Fincher does, but I still despise it. I have to admit it's not boring, though, especially the first half of it.
