Nothing but a soulless remake of Aladdin. Disney's remakes are awful bad acting and worse version of the story and characters. If you want to watch Aladdin watch the animated one

I was kind of disappointed in this movie. I was expecting it to be a lot better then it was. It's not bad or a good movie.

With a mixed track record, many were unsure of what to expect from the movie. However, Ritchie's Aladdin manages to capture the charm and energy of the original animated film while also adding new elements to the story.

One of the biggest concerns for audiences was Will Smith's portrayal of the Genie, a character made iconic by Robin Williams' portrayal in the original film. However, Smith's performance is solid, with the right mix of restraint and larger-than-life energy. Meanwhile, Mena Massoud's Aladdin and Naomi Scott's Jasmine both shine in their roles, with Scott particularly impressing with her strong vocal range. On the other hand, Marwan Kenzari's Jafar is less intimidating than in previous versions of the story.

The film's visuals are breathtaking, with the exotic city of Agrabah and the vibrant costumes and choreography standing out. The original songs from the animated film are given a modern twist, but the new numbers fail to leave a lasting impression. The extra storyline added to the film feels unnecessary and dragged the pacing down.

Overall, while not without its flaws, "Aladdin" is a fun and entertaining film that manages to capture the spirit of the original while adding new elements. The lead performances and visuals are particularly strong. However, the film would have benefited from more rigorous editing and more memorable new songs.
____________________________________________

No clue why they got Guy Ritchie (a director with style) and not allow him to incorporate that style into the film.

All the actors were really good, Will Smith as Genie fully delivers and they capture everything that made the original that good. Of cause they made changes and modernized the story a bit. It is mostly fitting and does not harm the movie experience. Lets start at the beginning. Aladdin’s tale is from “One thousand and One night” where Scheherazade has to tell her husband the king stories to avoid being executed (He is not a bad man but life has hit him so hard it crippled him inside). Disney adapted the story to a really great animated movie in 1992. I watched it in cinema and it is one of my favorite Disney movies. Because of this any remake has a hard stance to compete. Like before it is the story of the orphaned thief aka street urchin Aladdin. He has a hearth of gold or like they say he is an uncut diamond. One day he meets an unknown seeming rich woman and the two have a nice day. Meanwhile grand vizier Jafar is plotting to gain more power. I stop here to avoid spoilers. The story sticks close to the original and its classical heroes journey. While not as good as the original it is still really good and I was entertained from start to finish. The actors were well chosen and improved the movie. Lets start with Will Smith as Genie because I was skeptical here. He positively surprised me and was amazing. He did Robin Williams justice. It ends not there as Mena Massoud is a fantastic Aladdin, Marwin Kenzari a remarkable villain as Jafar (but should be used more) and Naomi Scott as Jasmine was incredible good. There are however a few weaknesses. The Sultan played by Navid Negahban is a bit pale as character and Iago is far weaker (More realistic). I fully enjoyed the new character Dalia played by Nasim Pedrad and her story with the Genie. Now something surprising. I am mostly a person who does not like the singing in Disney movies that much. Here I like it a lot and only skipped a few times. I praise this. The settings, costumes and special effects look great. They convinced me in a way that I never doubted the movie. Overall this is a really good movie and I give an 8/10. While not as good as the original it has its own merits and I enjoyed it. Expand

The costumes are great and there are some good examples of CGI. I liked the chase scene near the start, with fast choreography, it felt almost a little like a fast chase scene from a James Bond film. I would say that it's not the kind of film to overly analyse - if you're going to do nothing but compare it to the cartoon version from the 1990s, then you might well find some flaws but as a family-friendly film in its own right and for a light entertainment type watch, its certainly pretty good in and of itself.

I found it to be quite atmospheric and engrossing and while its undoubtedly cheesy, it's a good example of a family-friendly musical/fantasy film and so I'd definitely recommend it.

The movie is set in Arabia but looks like a stupid Indian Bollywood movie.
Mena Massoud act like a retard and not like a "cunning thief" like Aladdin, Jasmine is turned into a stupid Karen feminist and Jafar...one of the most cruel villains of Disney, the pedophile who wanted to marry a 16yo girl and obtain power over everything...here is a trash, whiny silly girl.
In the original opera Jafar turned into a giant snake, trapped Jasmine in a hourglass to suffocate her and blew fire, laughing in pure evil...almost invincible.
In the live action he beat the staff...and teleport things...so freakin pathetic.
The only good thing is Will Smith's performance

Let’s just say with out Will Smith and the dance scenes, I would have given this movie a 1. Over all disappointed, Disney could have done so much better with their budget

What killed it for me was the acting, fell super flat. Let’s talk about the cast:
1.Worst was Jafar= buzz kill, poor acting and dint look the part. Awful over all, his voice and facial gestures were not mean at all, actors voice is rather soft.
2. Sultan= Hollywood has to stop casting Persians as Arabs, their accent is different. Sultan is played by a Persian actor with Persian accent, but Sultan is not from Persia! Why not hire English actors that can do the Arab English accent. 3. Dalia, wasn’t funny, didn’t believe her acting. Was just an unnecessary filler. 4. Aladdin= looked identical to the cartoon for me, but acting was bad. Flat. Just not believable. They needed to work on his acting skills

And the ending was poor and they got lazy, what happened to Jafar turning into a Cobra??? With all that budget why did they cut out this important scene? Disney shoved the Female power thing down our throats again at end...so unnecessary.

I gave it a 3 since Will Smith was the highlight of the movie. If you are a child or teenager, you may enjoy the movie.

They should have left this class alone, Hollywood instantly is trying to re do classics and make it social correct to match the current state of politics, it doesn’t work. Unnecessary and forced. I’m sick of it

Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Aladdin is an definite A+ movie. The musical number were phenomenal especially the Friend Like Me number, the Prince Ali number, and the Whole New World Number. I loved the music so much it was outstanding, I liked the new versions of A Whole New World better than the original ones. The soundtrack is my 2nd favorite soundtrack of 2019, one of my top 5 favorite Disney soundtracks of all time, one of my top 10 favorite albums of 2019, one of my top 10 favorite soundtracks of all time, and one of my favorite albums of all time. The acting from Will Smith was stupendous, he was hilarious and when he was thanking Aladdin for setting him free I got teary eyed. Mena Massoud, Naomi Scott, Nasim Pedrad, Navid Negahban, and Billy Magnusson also gave terrific performances. The voice over performances from Alan Tudyk and Frank Welker were fantastic. The dance numbers were amazingly well choreographed. The costumes were remarkable especially Aladdin's Prince Ali outfit and Jasmine's pink dress and light green dress. The visual effects were pretty impressive especially the Genie, the Genie's magic, Rajah, Abu, the flying carpet, and Iago. The action scenes were also pretty great especially when Aladdin and Jasmine are on the flying carpet running from Iago. This is my favorite Disney Movie of 2019, my favorite musical of 2019, one of my top 10 favorite movies of 2019, my 2nd favorite live-action remake of a Disney animated movie, one of my top 5 favorite musicals of all time, and one of my favorite movies of all time. Aladdin, a kind-hearted street urchin, living in the Arabian city of Agrabah along with his pet monkey Abu, rescues and befriends Princess Jasmine, who has snuck out of the palace to explore, tired of her sheltered life. Meanwhile, the grandAladdin, a kind-hearted street urchin, living in the Arabian city of Agrabah along with his pet monkey Abu, rescues and befriends Princess Jasmine, who has snuck out of the palace to explore, tired of her sheltered life. Meanwhile, the grand vizier, Jafar, schemes to overthrow Jasmine's father as the Sultan with the support of Iago, his sardonic pet parrot. He seeks a magic lamp hidden in the Cave of Wonders that will grant him three wishes. He has been unable to retrieve the lamp himself because only "the diamond in the rough" is allowed to enter the cave.

Jafar discovers Aladdin is the diamond in the rough and when Aladdin sneaks back into the royal palace to talk to Jasmine, he is captured and persuaded by Jafar's deal to help him retrieve the lamp: since only Aladdin can enter the cave alive, he will retrieve the lamp for Jafar and Jafar will make Aladdin rich enough to impress Jasmine. Jafar warns Aladdin not to take anything but the lamp. Inside the cave, Aladdin finds a magic carpet and obtains the lamp, but Abu accidentally causes the cave to collapse after he catches a falling ruby. Aladdin gives the lamp to Jafar, but he double-crosses Aladdin and kicks him and Abu back into the cave, though Abu steals the lamp back. The magic carpet catches Aladdin and saves him from falling to his death.

Trapped in the cave, Aladdin rubs the lamp, unwittingly summoning the omnipotent Genie who lives inside it. The Genie explains that he has the power to grant Aladdin three wishes, with the exceptions of murder, romance, the resurrection of the dead, and more wishes. Aladdin gets the Genie to free them from the cave without using a wish on a technicality: Aladdin didn't rub the lamp as he stated the wish.
Aladdin enters Agrabah as Prince Ali of Ababwa, arriving in an extravagant spectacle. However, Jasmine is unimpressed by his first presentation, including an assortment of gifts and gems. The two later bond when he takes her on a ride on the magic carpet to show her the world she wants to see while the Genie goes out with Dalia. Jasmine realizes who Aladdin is and tricks him into revealing his true identity; however, he convinces her that he is actually a prince and only dressed like a peasant to meet the citizens of Agrabah beforehand.

Jafar discovers Aladdin's identity and, to test his theory, throws Aladdin into the sea, saying if he lives, it will be because he found the lamp, and the Genie saved him. If he dies, he really is a prince and doesn't have the lamp. Abu, now a monkey again, and the carpet arrive with the lamp, but Aladdin loses consciousness before he can rub it. The Genie, impressed by Aladdin's good character, assumes he can alter Genie rules to allow him to save Aladdin, but at the cost of his second wish. At the palace, Jafar tries to turn the others against Aladdin and the Genie with lies, but when Aladdin returns, Jafar is exposed by him and Jasmine, who was also suspicious of Jafar. He is arrested and imprisoned in the dungeon. The Sultan offers Aladdin the position as heir to the throne. Fearing he will lose Jasmine if the truth is revealed, Aladdin decides to reserve the Genie for then and refuses to free him. The Genie tells Aladdin that he was the first master he ever considered a friend and that he's now breaking his heart.
Jafar uses his first wish to become Sultan. When the loyal guards refuse to acknowledge the change, per Jasmine's request, he makes a second wish to become the world's most powerful sorcerer and imprisons the guards and Rajah. He then exposes Aladdin's identity to Jasmine and exiles him and Abu to a frozen wasteland on the other side of the Earth. He threatens to kill the Sultan and Dalia unless Jasmine agrees to marry him. At the wedding ceremony, Aladdin and Abu return, having been rescued by the magic carpet, and Jasmine steals back the lamp. Furious, Jafar transforms Iago into a roc to give chase. Jafar, angered by the Sultan's attempt to stop him, overpowers them and severely damaging the magic carpet in the process. Iago steals the lamp back.

Aladdin stalls by taunting Jafar for being second and powerless to the Genie, thereby tricking him into using his last wish to become the most powerful being in the universe. Due to the vagueness of the wish, the Genie is able to use it to turn Jafar into a genie; chained to the lamp without a master, Jafar is trapped inside, dragging Iago in with him. The Genie banishes them and throws Jafar's lamp to the Cave of Wonders and repairs the magic carpet. Aladdin keeps his promise, using his last wish to free the Genie and allow him to live as a human. The Sultan declares that Jasmine will be the next ruler and tells her that Aladdin is a good person, outlines how worthy he is, and tells her as sultana, she can overturn the law that requires her to marry a prince.

The Genie marries Dalia and leaves to explore the world and start a family with her. Aladdin and Jasmine get married and start a new life as well.

The story was a little stupid, with Jasmine actually becoming Sultan (I am all for feminism but this is just going too far) and Jafar was nerfed to make Jasmine look "stronger". If you ignore the token social justice tripe, the movie was enjoyable and brings back a lovely nostalgia of the amazing music brought to us by the 1992 animated marvel that we all fell in love with. This wouldn't be an issue, but of course this is a musical, so the lack of musicality kills it.

All of the actors look like they're just dialing in their performances.

At least this disaster of a movie got me to rewatch the original Aladdin, which was a really pleasant surprise by contrast, with emotive songs and great performances by the cartoon characters animators.

My conclusion is that Disney has no real quality control going on for it's projects, which is a shame given how much money went into the live action version.

The first half of the movie felt unnecessary and was pretty slow paced. Movie did not get better until Genie (Will Smith) appeared. Genie played a bigger role than in the original film and felt like saved the 2nd half of this live action remake. The additional storyline changes were welcome but the acting of the main character felt a bit weak and overshadowed by the characters of Genie and Jasmine sadly. Still worth watching through Disney+

Aladdin, a whole new world?

Today, I was able to take a stroll down memory lane and let nostalgia be my guide. Aladdin is a Disney giant that took its first magic carpet ride in 1992. Today, Aladdin knocked the dust off of the old magic carpet once again. This movie stars newcomers Mena Massoud as Aladdin and Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine. Hollywood giant, Will Smith plays the Genie. So let’s see how the reboot rebounded.

First, let’s get the cat out of the bag. This reboot hits all of the classic notes from the animated movie. However, the movie updates the story to feature current sociocultural climate notes and additional songs. This isn’t just a live version carbon copy, and I’m glad Disney made changes.

Both Mena and Naomi, do a very good job in their roles as Aladdin and Jasmine. They both display some good singing ability and acting skills. And, of course Raja and Abu steal your hearts in this movie. Will Smith, had the hardest job of all by having to live up to Robin William’s original portrayal, but he does a very good job as well. Will gives the audience a funny, high energy, charming, and current version of the Genie. As for Jafar and the Sultan, they also do a good job, but honestly the Sultan isn’t really featured, and Jafar needed to be more devilish.

This was a good movie, but the additional parts and songs in the movie did not add much to it. People who enjoyed this movie growing up will say just “give me the original movie,” and move on. But those who are not familiar with the original movie, will enjoy the magic ride that Disney took us on.

Long story short, families with kids should definitely go see this movie in the theaters, whether at night time or matinee. Everyone else, especially those who loved the movie as a kid decades ago, I would say you can see the matinee. But, honestly you should wait for Redbox or a streaming service rental for $4.99 to see a whole new world.

As happy as it would make me to join the bandwagon of contrarian **** for this one, I’m mostly fine with thinking about this movie as one of the purer but boring incarnations of Disney’s plan to soak nostalgic 90s children.

The update trips over itself to give Jasmine, Genie, and Jasmine’s handmaid Dalia, played by the wonderfully straight-faced Nasim Pedrad, fuller internal lives and agency. Some of that is welcome, like the side story between Dalia and Genie, which works a lot better than it ever could have with the otherwise superior Robin Williams at the helm. Will Smith can pull off the flirty, dashing, smoothness necessary to woo in a way that would not have played as convincingly with Robin’s more brittle, nervous energy. Aladdin and Jasmine are aged up: the actors are 26 and 27 rather than the teenagers of the animated version of the story, which solves some borderline behavior on Jafar’s part. But other things, like Jasmine’s song, feel empty of feeling and out of place with the rest of the film, probably because they were not meant for the film, but rather for play on the radio and Disney channel. There’s nothing wrong with including new music. (Wife has a note about the impressive quality of Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott’s singing and how the movie would’ve been much improved if the producers had allowed Will Smith to lip sync some of his more vocally challenging songs, rather than the Lin-Manuel Miranda-type sing-talking that he does.)

Jasmine herself is spared the indignities of inconsistently effective hypnotism, which apparently necessitates a chase scene by a parrot-dragon instead. In the end, she’s still placed in suspended animation for the big confrontation scene which makes me wonder what Anita Sarkeesian would say about the effectiveness of this update: Feminist Frequency’s Damsel in Distress series.

Wife describes this film as “completely unnecessary,” made the same attempts to update and address feminist critique to the story as they did in Beauty and the Beast, such as explaining the mother’s disappearance, since so many people have made fun of Disney for the “missing mother” problem. Wife likes, for instance, the way that Jasmine is included in the opening song, “One Jump Ahead,” rather than it only featuring Aladdin. But she says the new Jasmine song was not a worthy addition to Menken’s soundtrack. The dancing was one of the few aspects of the film that distinguished it from the original (something I agree with–dancing and singing are not points of spectacle in an animated feature, but live-action can hang its hat on the actor’s physicality).

One of Wife’s points of mild annoyance is Genie’s inconsistent power levels. Sometimes it seems like he has a lot of leeway, like when he magics an entire entourage of performers to accompany Prince Ali to Agrabah, yet he’s unable to make Aladdin a prince from a real place, or to make a fake place real for the purposes of a wish. This is especially important when Jafar makes his wish to be sultan, but Genie isn’t able (or maybe willing?) to make the court and court guards obey him. The wish is almost too-quickly overcome by a simple monologue by Jasmine, simperingly (my word) extolling the virtues of her father’s beneficent hereditary monarchy over the evils of another hereditary monarchy. Overall, she says, it was just OK, an entertaining way to spend two hours, but it doesn’t have the charm and fuzzies of the original, which is a shame.

Lindsay Ellis has an amazing video essay on the impact of Robin Williams on celebrity-driven animated movies in the 90s through the present day.

It mostly follows the same plot as the original Disney movie, but they tweaked the story a little to create more depth for the new actors and thereby also making the movie a bit more original and more fun to watch. They adapted the genie role very well to fit Will Smiths acting, thereby giving him a podium to create his own version of the genie, which worked out very well. Disney also paid more attention to equality and the impact of the female actors, though the new songs created to support the female characters didn't really work out for me.
Conclusion: a real life version of the original Aladdin; very much the same, a little tweaked, and thereby fun to watch.

Everything it does well was done better in the original and everything that the original did well is done much worse here! Now, when you think of the original Aladdin, what comes to mind? Probably the incredibly rich and colourful and energetic animation with great comedic timing and Robin Williams’ incredible performance as the Genie. Well, obviously this new movie isn’t animated so you don’t have any of that and Robin Williams is dead so you don’t have that either. Instead of the beautifully-crafted hand-drawn animation, you get very flat-looking and washed-out environments and some very crappy CGI. Instead of Robin Williams improvising most of his lines and talented Disney animators giving life to his words, you get Will Smith being slightly charming and slightly comedic, which is pretty much every Will Smith performance for the past 20+ years! Also, instead of Looney Tunes-style visual gags and slapstick, you get cringe humour. Not cringy humour, cringe humour, which is an actual style of comedy most often found in sitcoms like The Office. Cringe humour can be great if done well, but it can fail spectacularly if not done well. This was not done well. It wasn’t very funny. It was just awkward. What is even the point of watching this if the best parts of the original movie that arguably are the reason it is so beloved do not translate at all? Okay, so the comedy doesn’t work, but how are the other actors? Well, the rest of the performances were honestly pretty bad, especially the guy playing Jafar. He is not threatening in the slightest! He just sounds monotone and bored. He just wasn’t the right actor for the role. His facial features are too soft and his voice is too high-pitched. Not great villain material if not written correctly. The guy playing Aladdin just felt awkward, which kind of works sometimes for when he’s turned into a prince, but his performance still feels awkward even in the scenes where he’s supposed to be in his home element. He’s supposed to be kind of a Han Solo type, he’s a thief but he has a heart of gold, but in this he feels more like Scott Pilgrim. The girl playing Jasmine was probably the best actor in the movie, either her or Alan Tudyk as Iago, but in practically every scene she’s in without Aladdin she’s accompanied by her sidekick character. Not the tiger, a new character, her handmaiden. She was also very awkward and not very funny. I really don’t understand the point of this character being in the movie at all. Okay, so the performances leave a lot to be desired, but how is the music? Also terrible! The new orchestrations of the old songs are made more modern and hip for the kids (With some rapping and beatboxing. No, really.) and the only person who can sing in the whole darn cast is the girl who plays Jasmine! Speaking of Jasmine, she also has a new song of her own which she sings really well, but the lyrics are not very good and it seems very out of place with the rest of the songs. It doesn’t sound like Aladdin, it sounds more like The Greatest Showman. Probably because it was written by the same people who did The Greatest Showman. Now, I haven’t seen that movie, but I am not a fan of the songs from that film. They sound way too poppy and not enough like musical theatre for my liking and the lyrics I think are just awful, but at least all the songs were like that in The Greatest Showman. In Aladdin, it just does not fit at all. The effects during the song were cool though, or at least they would be if I didn’t see literally the exact same thing before in Into the Woods and Avengers: Infinity War. That’s most of this movie’s problems summed up. No matter what it does, there is always another movie that does it better. Overall, this movie is an embarrassment. It’s a complete and utter waste of time. It’s pointless! Just stay home and watch the original! It’s shorter (Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, the remake is over 2 hours long! The original is under 90 minutes! It’s full of padding. It even ends with a big dance party scene like a DreamWorks movie. And it shows Aladdin and Jasmine getting married! What the heck?? They aren’t supposed get married until the third movie, after a direct-to-VHS sequel and a TV series!) and it is better in every way! It’s colourful, energetic, hilarious and a ton of fun! This is boring, tired, unfunny and frustrating. Do not watch this movie! Stop supporting this lazy crap! The only reason I did was because this movie has already made over a billion dollars and there is nothing I can do to affect its financial performance at this point, and that's really sad that a movie this bad is so successful.

In simple words – this live action can never beat animated.
Will Smith cannot replace Robin Williams. But movie I guess was ok-ish. Genie CGI was bad though. But holy moly why is Jafar so bad? In movie Jafar looks like evil fashion designer.

Also why movie changed Arabic dances into bollywood dances?

Don’t understand the reviews. This is well acted, fun and respectful to the old movie. Much better than Lion King!

Aladdin is a remake of the original classic. Overall its got good music numbers, performances from the leads, good laughs, and visually looks really good - from the locations to the colour palette, costumes, and makeup.

The genie, played by Will Smith, was very funny in it's own unique way. Songs are revised versions of the original ones, but are still enjoyable to listen to. Jasmine and Aladdin are well played by their respective actors, but the other characters have become extra's to their original versions. Jafar isn't nearly as terrifying and dangerous as the original 1992 version, and has a strange fetish with invading neighbouring countries for no other reason than territorial expansion.

The realism of visuals suffer due to the sets being made out of CGI for the most part, looking worse than some of the original Ice Age movies. Whoever said that practical effects are unnecessary or pointless should get his head out of his/her ass, and this movie is the perfect example of why too much CGI will hurt your movie.

The final act is unfortunately rather underwhelming. If you were looking forward to the scene where Jafar turns into a massive Snake, you'll be disappointed. Instead, Jago turns into a bigger bird... Great. What a missed oppertunity.

Also, the movie leans strongly to Social Justice Warriors propoganda, as Jasmine becomes the next ruler of a Muslim ruled state... yes i'm not making this up. This comes through especially when Jasmine sings a song for a second time, braking the immersion of a particular scene. I don't mind woman empowerment in media, but implement it in a creative and believable way. All in all, this was a good movie. It was funny and amusing. I give this movie a 7/10.

Of course this movie had to end with the princess taking over the kingdom. Can't have a man ruling things now can we? ...and Disney pushed this at every turn.

The only thing that is good is the CGI. In some scenes. The rest of this film had me literally falling asleep in the theater. I missed Gilbert Gottfried and Robin Williams even a lot more than I thought I would in this film.

Similar to Beauty and the Beast, the film takes no real risks in presenting the same story you have already seen before. The casting is for the most part excellent, and all the big names put in solid performances, especially Smith, who doesn’t try to fill the massive shoes left by Williams, but rather puts on his own and wears them proudly, the Genie character is perhaps the boldest move the movie makes and is the main thing that could be argued as ‘not a remake’.

The musical numbers sound good (as you would expect) and the set pieces and costume work are both excellent.

The movie just lacks any real reason to invest, the plot is identical to before, though arguably worse as the pacing is awful at times as characters switch up opinions or traits on the flick of a switch just to progress the story. The musical numbers sometimes fail to move the story forward, which means shortcuts are taken outside of these numbers in order to make up for lost time, which harshly compromises the pacing and certain points of internal logic. For me personally it seriously detached me from the film and hurt my enjoyment. Though I don’t wish to mark it too severely as I appreciate that it was a personal response.

I can see why this movie is making so much money, and it will continue to do so, and it will sell well again when released to the home market, it is an enjoyable flick that families can easily digest and enjoy, even if it isn’t doing anything above and beyond.

6/10, a perfectly competent and inoffensive movie, if you like Disney, or Aladdin, you’ll enjoy it.

Once again Disney proves that there is no point in remaking their classic movies. They always turn out worse! and this is no exception. The few changes that are made to make this version stand out against the original mostly all fall flat.
