Ad Astra is inferior to the director's previous movie 'Lost City of Z'. AA contains some of what made Lost City of Z great, but utilizes it much less and trading it in for sterile narration/monologues; close-up shots of Brad Pitt's face.
Ad Astra could have been fine with the monologues if the writing was much better. An example would be the film A Scanner Darkly, which had monologues ripped straight from the book by Philip K Dick. (So of course it would be good) None of the writing is especially stand out but the direction in the monologue scenes is too true to the character. It's not directed badly, its directed to reflect the emotionless dialogues.
Almost everything else is excellent, there's just not enough of it to outweigh the poor introspective moments. What made some scenes in Ad Astra and a lot of scenes in Lost City of Z memorable is how strikingly haunting the scenes are. The emotional story is perfectly reflected in the images the director presents.
Ad Astra is not the sum of its parts; it contains scenes of brilliance combined with too many scenes of dull monologue and dialogue.

While I don't think Ad Astra is quite deserving of the praise most of the movie critics have given it, it's still well worth seeing.

“Work hard, play later.”

Once a year ever since ‘Gravity’ was released, we seem to get new stories about the voyage of space where certain characters “do not go gentle into that good night.”

I wasn’t wowed over the trailers for Ad Astra, because when you work at a cinema and spent most of your day watching trailers, well trust me when I say this didn’t stand out from the rest. I originally thought it was about saving the world or something like that. For what it didn’t advertise was a slow burn sci-fi movie that’s on the same level as ‘Blade Runner 2049’ and the emotional side as ‘First Man’. A personal story told through a first person narrative about unresolved issues from past relationship.

Basically an art house movie with a huge budget.

‘Ad Astra’ was pretty good. After only seeing it once, I feel that this will grow on me overtime and so far it has. A mixture of both ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ and Terrence Malick movies. While not as great as those two comparisons, but while watching I couldn’t help to be reminded of those two.

There's some beautiful and impressive shots through out the movie, especially when the movie constantly shows you the entire scale of space and planets through the characters journey. The colors adds to environment that oozes with style and has a tranquil feel to it. I think that’s where the Blade Runner vibes really come in. Brilliant cinematography by Hoyte Van Hoytema.

Brad Pitt was terrific as the silent astronaut with tangled mood swings. It’s not an explosive performance, just simple enough for it to be effective. Any other actor would’ve gone big for no other reasons than being overly dramatic and it makes sense for his character to be closed off; similar to Ryan Gosling in ‘First Man’, where his emotional health comes last. You learn very little about his character, as most of his backstory is only in the background for you to piece together the puzzle.

The score was mystical and often eerie at times which helped ties in with the unknown aspects of space. The visual effects are excellent and nearly photorealistic at times - something you come to expect by now with space movies.

I wasn’t too sure about the narration at first, because it was very off putting and a cheap way for the character to express himself. However it sorta grew on me after awhile and some of it was almost rambling with Roy questioning every decision he made.

Now for the issues:

I have no idea why Liv Tyler was in this movie, because she literally does nothing and could have easily been cut out. It felt like a reshoot for some reason.

Remember when I said the visual effects are photorealistic ‘at times’, but that isn’t always the case with certain scenes. There’s a deranged chimpanzee that pops up and it looks really phoney. I think that entire scene could been cut out. I’ve brought up twice about cutting scenes, because I believe if this movie went back to the editing room one more time, then my score would be a lot higher.

There’s a ridiculously and almost laughable scene where Roy (Brad Pitt) steaks into a spaceship that he’s not suppose to be on, and all the astronauts onboard go into a frenzy and accidentally start kill themselves while trying to cease Roy. No joke. Roy dosen’t even do anything as he never intended to hurt them. It was cheap way of making Roy isolated for the rest of the movie. A few years ago I remember reading a horrifying incident that happened to astronaut Luca Parmitano where he reported water inside of his space suit helmet, and nearly become the first astronaut to drown in space. However, Luca remained calm throughout the whole incident despite the odds of him dying being high, but in the end he survived. So it’s really strange seeing these trained astronauts freaking out because came on board.

Overall rating: Out of the whole spectacle, I find the meaning of the movie the most striking. The themes of family, love and abandonment plays a major role in the story. The whole idea of “working hard and playing later” comes with a cost, which is the less time we spend with our loved ones and abandoning everything to pursuit something better out there when in reality the best things in life are right here. When you discover nothing there’s no turing back and no finding your way back. I’ve been thinking about it for awhile now after seeing the movie.

Never underestimate James Gray as a storyteller.

It's a great looking film that can also be pretty dull at points.

This is one of the most visually impressive films of the year. There is just so much gorgeous scenery and special effects. Includes the best looking realization of the moon's surface I've ever seen. The film does a great job of balancing the whiteness or colors of the spacecraft with the darkness of space. The cinematography is also excellent with just some great camera shots.

The movie does a strong job of world building in this near future world where space travel is easier and travel to the moon is pretty routine. The setting is explained naturally without forced exposition.

This is a very deliberately paced movie that focuses too much on the hero's journey for it's own good. This is isn't too much of an issue for the first half of the film as they throw several interesting things at you. However as Pitt's character travels further away from human civilization, scenes get far more drawn out and just plain boring. I had to step away for a few minutes and didn't miss anything.

It doesn't help the movie any that the main story and the hero's journey are all really basic and predictable when you get down to it.

Though I just said how simple his character's arc was, Pitt does a really good job of selling the guy especially since he has his emotions in check for a good part of the film. Though he's not in this much, Jones also does a hell of a job. (Also, this isn't really relevant to the content of the film, but Donald Pleasance is in this and this is the first time I've seen him without facial hair. I think he's a reverse Trebeck in that I actually thinks he looks better without it despite being accustomed to him with the moustache and sometimes beard for years.)

I think this film is more appealing to those you are interested in intellectual films. If you're into pure entertainment, this may not be your thing.

What most surprised me about the movie was it’s tension. The lightness and boundlessness of floating through space contrasts sharply with scenes of bodies flailing hopelessly to the earth, skulls cracking on airlock windows and human arms being devoured by genetically modified space apes. However where the more subtle tension builds around the theme of space travel, huge opportunities are lost by not exploiting Liv Tyler’s character as the strained romantic relationship between her and the protagonist. Also the father-son drama although mostly well acted lacks in believability and emotional connection. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pros:
-Solid characters that I found myself fairly invested in.
-Good performances, particularly from Brad Pitt and Tommy Lee Jones.
-Great visuals and atmosphere.
-The way the film portrays space travel is very interesting since it’s very likely that that is what it will actually be like in possibly a decade or so. -The movie is slow paced, but unlike Star Trek: The Motion Picture where it was only made like that to pad out the run time, in this film it works in favor of the story. -The film as a whole feels realistic, which makes it even easier for us to connect to these characters.
-The scene where Tommy Lee Jones’ character, H. Clifford McBride, commits suicide nearly made me tear up, something only a few films in the past have managed to accomplish.

Cons:
-The placement of the scene where Roy, Brad Pitt’s character, is collecting data from the Lima Project I found confusing because it happens after H. Clifford McBride commits suicide and the transition to this scene doesn’t make it clear enough that it’s a flashback. I admit it’s a nitpick, but it left me a little confused when I watched the movie. -While I believe the slow pacing works in the film’s favor as it helps to add suspense to the movie, it may turn off some viewers who are looking for a more fast paced action heavy sci-fi movie, and some of the trailers for this movie make it seem as though this is something like that, when it reality it is slow paced and doesn’t have too much action. -Roy seems a little too devoted to saving his father considering what he knows what he has done to his other crew member and he even straight up tells him he never cared about him or his mother, especially considering how emotionally detached he is portrayed as being in the movie.
-The film’s main core message seems to be one that I think most people already know. It still serves as a good cautionary tale, but it’s still a message I feel like most people are already aware of. -It’s kind of hard to be invested in Liv Tyler’s character because we see very little of her throughout the movie. We only really care about her because Roy cares about her, and that’s not really a good thing.

Final verdict: I enjoyed Ad Astra. I have a few small issues with it here and there, but it is overall a well made film that I would recommend checking out. Just be sure you know what you are getting into when going to see it.

Despite some absurd diversions (chase scene! horror scene! shoot-out scene!), this is a quality science-fiction narrative

Hoping to step into the lineage of such esoteric science-fiction films as 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) and Solyaris (1972), Ad Astra is, first and foremost, a mainstream Hollywood movie wherein the demand for crowd-pleasing content clashes with the desire for esotericism. This is manifested in the form of an overly convenient resolution and some of the most ludicrous narrative diversions since the abomination that was Star Wars: The Last Jedi (space pirates! enraged simians! shoot-out!). Which is not to say that I disliked the film – I didn't; even if the narrative never manages to get beyond Heart of Darkness in space and the script relies far too heavily on a sub-Terrence Malick voiceover. The craft on display is exceptional and the story is thought-provoking, with some spectacular visuals. But it could have been so much better.

In the near future, a series of energy surges originating near Neptune leave much of Earth without power. 29 years previously, H. Clifford McBride (Tommy Lee Jones), left Earth with the Lima Project, a mission aimed at establishing contact with alien civilisations. Travelling to the same region near Neptune from which the surges are now emanating, 16 years into the mission, all contact was lost. SpaceCom presumed the crew dead, but now they fear that a possibly unhinged Clifford could be behind the surges. And so Maj. Roy McBride (Brad Pitt), Clifford's son, is to travel to a secure long-range communications base on Mars and record a message for Clifford in the hopes he might respond.

Written by James Gray and Ethan Gross, and directed by Gray, Ad Astra wastes no time in tying us rigidly to Roy's perspective; it opens with a POV shot from inside his helmet, and the first words we hear are him speaking in voiceover. This sets up the narrative to come, as Roy remains the sole focaliser throughout. The fact that the film is set amongst the stars, but remains always tied to Roy's perception allows Gray to fashion a narrative that's both massive in scope yet emotionally intimate. He's aided in this by cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema, whose gorgeous 35mm celluloid photography captures the overwhelming scale, but also frequently frames Pitt in tight close-ups.

Initially played as emotionally closed off ("I've been trained to compartmentalise my emotions"), Roy's stoicism slowly starts to erode as his mission begins to go wrong. Pitt's performance shuns emotional grandstanding, and is terrifically modulated and minimalist, using the lack of outward emotion to inform the character's emotional beats, relying on subtlety and nuanced gesture.

Thematically, Ad Astra is the story of two men obsessed with their profession to the detriment of all else, and like most of Gray's films, it's heavily androcentric, as are its most obvious narrative influences – Heart of Darkness (1899) and Apocalypse Now (1979). Within this, an especially interesting theme is commercialism - Roy takes a Virgin America shuttle to the moon, whilst an exterior shot of a lunar base shows signs for Applebee's, DHL, and Subway. And since the moon is now so like Earth, it's blighted by many of the same issues as Earth; crime, political division, materialism. Indeed, in VO, Roy notes the moon has become a "re-creation of what we're running from on Earth".

However, for all these positives, there are some significant problems. Firstly, there are three ridiculous pseudo-action scenes. The third, at least, is the springboard for the second half of the movie, but it remains a monumentally silly way to advance the plot. The first two scenes, however, serve no such purpose; they lead nowhere, reveal nothing about the character, and have no connection to the esoteric themes found elsewhere.

Another problem is the overly neat finale, which I believe was a reshoot after test audiences responded poorly to the original ending. However, the originally scripted ending made a lot more sense and was thematically fascinating. The other big problem is the VO. Obviously intended to function in much the same way as Willard's in Apocalypse Now, the problem is that most of the time, it's describing something we can see on screen. Pitt's performance is strong enough that the VO is unnecessary, and it's hugely distracting. By the half-way stage, I was sick of Roy's cod-philosophical ramblings that come across like someone trying and failing to imitate Malick.

With all that said, however, it's a testament to the story that despite these hurdles, I still enjoyed the film. The manner in which Gray juxtaposes an intimate tone with massive themes is impressive, and Pitt gives a strong performance. In essence, Ad Astra is a fable about the importance of human connection, played out against the backdrop of the infinite, and despite some significant problems, it's well worth checking out.

It starts with a bang via some spectacular explosions at high altitude, then slows to examine some disenfranchised family relationships. All this takes place while a team searches for other forms of intelligent life - in the outer regions of the solar system. Writer-director James Grey (The Immigrant ’13) presents his story within a kaleidoscope of vast and beautiful vistas.

While in some aspects similar to 2001, this is more accessible, offering a little more humanity to contemplate. In some ways, it’s like a cross between Silent Running and a serious take on the Star Wars theme. Some situations come across as maybe a little far-fetched, under-explained and under-developed but it offers a mostly mature script that’s worthy of some thought. Brad Pitt gives one of his more convincing performances - mostly registered by nuanced facial expressions and a nicely handled voice-over ‘thoughts’ approach. A strong ethereal style music score by Max Richter (Testament of Youth ’14) helps build an expansive atmosphere. But, if we are looking for God (as the movie hints) I doubt we are going to find him floating around the solar system – or at least, not until He’s ready to be ‘found’.

-
"Ad Astra" is a cigarette hard to smoke but is also an elegant one. Independently the influences that the movie has, it can be noticed the powerful hand of Hoyte Van Hoytema and the intention of presenting his part of the project with integrity and neatness. Hoytema is an erudite capable of picturing and visualizing interstellar landscapes that very few on this planet could imagine. That is the biggest delight of the movie. When it's about observing the panorama, contemplating the distance and the elements that have the visual layers such as the color and the architecture, "Ad Astra" is a great success. But there is a big obstacle. The scrip, written by Gray, crumbles all the potential in the film. The essence of the movie probes between Roy’s journey in search of his father, his conception of life and the obsession of the father with extraterrestrial life. The scrip gives too much existentialism to the voice of Roy and a lot of weight to the father's obsession. Roy is someone so overwhelmed by the heaviness of his loneliness that his narrative becomes repetitive and drags the public into a never-ending speech of "Who Am I and Why I Can't Feel Something?" to a point of tedium. On the other side, the father's obsessions are absurd and irrational, and even when some behaviors are justified while the journey, they simply add monotony to the scenes that Hoytema worked so hard to idealize. In that aspect, I'm sad to say that there was not an important impulse of acting in the movie. It is evident that Brad Pitt compress his own acting to achieve the character, and when he tries to break his own helmet, the merit that can be given to the few tears that he couldn't hold in is too little. Not even Tommy Lee Jones or the five minutes on the screen of Ruth Negga add something to the dramatic. Taking the visuals out, "Ad Astra" is one more intention of promoting reflection in a public that has seen characters getting lost and finding themselves in more reasonable ways. I believe that James Gray's mistake was telling about the life of a man who was not living it.

Even though the film is really strong in the technical category, it still has its issues. The film is definitely going for this deep psychological tone and it didn’t work well for me, mainly because the film takes itself a little bit too seriously. Throughout the 2 hour runtime, Pitt smiles maybe once or twice. If the film wasn’t trying to make itself this deep psychological film, it would have been better. The very basic concept of the film is very cliched. It is another save the universe story but it does enough that is unique that this isn’t that big of an issue. Some of the side characters are pointless and are just there to dump exposition. The film also does start to feel a tad bit too long towards the end though. While these issues do hold the film down a little bit, the positives do outweigh the negatives. Brad Pitt gives a fantastic performance. Although I think his performance in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was better, I still think he does a fantastic job. It’s just the little things he does in this role that establish him as a great actor. Tommy Lee Jones did a good job in his role even though he was on screen for about 10-15 minutes. In my opinion, the biggest take away from the film is the visual effects. The film looks fantastic. Whenever we see a planet, it looks so real and it sucks you into the universe. Every little detail, every spaceship, every location just feels incredibly real. I strongly believe this film could win Best Visual Effects at the Oscars. The way the film uses lighting and its camera work just adds to the spectacle. I don’t know a lot about the physics of space but from what I do know, this film abides by those rules most of the time. Do remember that this film takes place in the near future and technology has obviously improved in this universe so some of the physics may not make as much sense as they would today. I also really enjoyed the score by Max Richter for this film a lot. It has this spacey vibe to it that fits the atmosphere and the tone the film is going for. I thought the production design for this film was really good also. Overall, Ad Astra is a great film with a fantastic performance by Brad Pitt and amazing visual effects but is held back a little by a way too serious tone. I give Ad Astra a 7.5/10. Expand

Set in a vague “not so distant future” where mankind has reached the edge of the solar system in Neptune (as Pluto is no longer thought of as a planet) but remains unable to reach into the intricacies of the soul for lack of volition and surpluses of fear. The movie moves slowly but surely into the protagonist’s acceptance of his universal needs, doubts and longings amidst a mostly gloomy atmosphere accomplished through tense and low music, sparse sound effects, and long voice-overs. It takes a nuclear explosion for the protagonist to shake off his reluctance to bond with the world thus transforming himself into a new shape of the father figure. The movie premise is just window-dressing (as it doesn't make sense) - and while there are some good scenes for Pitt to eat, his acting comes across much like the character he's portraying - an unrealistic expectation of reality. The story themes of missing out on the here-and-now for want of the beyond; and the challenge we set for our parents (and dreams) to live up to our hopes are there, but it felt like they could have been condensed to a short. At the end, the movie feels like a huge journey... only to find at the end you simply shrug your shoulders and go all the way back home. The movie is too languid in its pacing to be a blockbuster, and too simplistic to be arthouse. It's good they at least tried for the stars - but I would have preferred something a little more grounded. Expand

Technically excellent and most accurate than the average space movie, but slow paced AF and the whole plot is somewhere between nonsensical and uninteresting, ending with an extremely plain moral lesson that nobody asked for.

On a minor note, the science of space and spaceflight is a not very accurate, and the economic plausibility is not very beleivable . Which is a shame given that it wants to be in the club of movies like 'Gravity' and 'Interstellar' that take the science seriously.

I actually chuckled at the ridiculousness of certain scenes, especially when he used a shield through a rock field which not only did not push him backwards but didn't change his course, and he somehow projected the trajectory back to his craft perfectly from a spinning turbine. WOW. Although Brad Pitt is fine in the roll, I didn't feel a connection to him, and didn't feel the connection between him and his father either. The overall look of the film is excellent and its saving grace. I'm still not sure what was causing the electrical surges that was taking place throughout the universe, but some of the dialogue was muddied here and there and difficult to decipher. People sitting around me were complaining about the slow pacing when the film ended. The film reminded me of a space version of Apocalypse Now, where the destination is a mad man and the journey getting there is treacherous and death. Ad Astra is not at the level of that masterpiece of course, but maybe worth seeing for the overall visual look. Expand

Maybe the father-son cliché does not reach enough depth, maybe the space stories and the threat for Earth are too secondary, maybe it's waaaaay toooo sloooow. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie seems like it was written by two different teams. The first half is great- extremely entertaining, and very well shot. The action sequence on the moon were very well done. Then, as soon as they leave the moon en route to Mars, it becomes a boring, pretenious, tedious movie, with extraordinarily little payoff. Most of the things that happen are absolutely pointless. And the ending....

Brad Pitt was excellent however.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ad Astra is visually stunning but everything else is a bit flat. The early antenna tower scene is reminiscent of Gravity. The plot echoes Apocalypse Now. The “daddy issues” psychology is superficial And cliched - but James Gray obviously thinks it is profound. The final half hour is a major letdown. The meeting of Brad Pitt and Tommy Lee Jones characters is a major fizzer. There is a thrilling moon chase but it feels like it is from another movie. So does the Alien-like animal attack scene. Pitt has his serious face on throughout the film and most of the time he just looks constipated. Expand

So I was pretty interested to check this out. And while I can say that it's most definitely visually breathtaking, in addition to feeling like it borrows some pages from previous superior space films (Interstellar, Gravity, The Martian, etc.), I found it to be a bit underwhelming and a little too ponderous and heavy in terms of story and pacing. The film seemed a little sluggish to me and took sometimes random, sometimes slow aim at what direction it wanted to go in. One more positive I can say, however, is that Brad Pitt gives a very confident performance that manages to make the film only slightly more compelling than it could've been, but just barely enough to keep my interest going till the end. Overall, Pitt's in top form here, and it's got some neat visuals and kind of a cool and epic score to go along with it, but it just felt lacking and uninspired to me storywise, as well as content to take it's time to a fault. First, the action scenes felt out of place and were unnecessary diversions that didn't affect the storyline so it was like they were just checking off a box which contributes to a bit of an identity crisis of what kind of film it wants to be. Second, the narration was totally unnecessary and felt distracting. Finally, the plot was very straightforward and obvious. The wide panning shots are some of the most amazing and immersive space moments I've seen on the big screen, and if you plan on seeing this film, see it on as big a screen as you can. That being said, it doesn't tread in waters any different than Gravity of Interstellar or Space Odyssey, but wears their influence on its sleeve in a way that is reminiscent of feeling awe in the presence of a great replica of an even more awe inspiring original artwork. BUT, sadly, beyond the visuals, and maybe the sound, the film falls rather flat from beginning to end. Brad Pitt's character is a caricature of a 50s/60s era action hero. A no nonsense militant man who never loses his cool except for when he is faced with his daddy issues. And boy does this film dunk your head in his daddy issues, over and over and over again. I picked up on the fact that this character had father issues, and that his father was a perceived hero and potential villain VERY early in the film as this is clearly and plainly spelled out to the audience. Despite this the film decides to forgo any relevant character building in order to reinsert a reminder of said daddy issues every ten to fifteen minutes, and if it's not Brad Pitt staring out into the abyss whispering 'father...' to his distant lost daddy/cosmic creator then some other character is introduced only to mention his father in some capacity and then exiting stage left as quickly as they arrived. It gets real old, and real perplexing, and feels a lot like getting hit over the head with a daddy/god mallet over and over again to the point of seeming comedic or cartoonish instead of deep and meaningful. Then there is the problem with this film's attempt at being deep and meaningful. It really tries to be deep and meaningful but never seems to inundate you but up to the ankle. Moments of 'Look inflation in the future, an expensive blanket', or 'Look, capitalism on the moon' come across as intriguing but are rushed out of frame as quickly as they are shoved into your face (much like every jarring cameo) making room for more daddy issues, and reminders that Brad Pitt is very cool and collected, until he is not. Then there is the over the top/possibly inspired by Herge's 'Tin Tin goes to the moon' action sequences that are so at odds with the tone of the majority of the film that it continuously felt like I was shifting between two movies. Ten minutes of attempted deep/atmospheric/slow brooding character stagnation then ten minutes of chaotic 'armageddon' level action sequences (with monkeys) where everything that could go wrong does go wrong like clockwork, but somehow our hero never makes a wrong choice, and if he does, it gets him where he is headed even faster than otherwise. This film is a fever dream of someone coming to terms with the absence of their father, and it is a mess. A pretty mess filled to the brim with miscalculations, wtf were they thinking moments, and a great sense that whoever wrote the script did absolutely no research into how physics works in space. It's more Star Wars space fantasy than scifi, but without any of the fun, and a lead up to a climax and revelation that seems so silly and contrived it makes you wonder how this film got so many great actors to do so little for such a long slog of time. It is pretty though, I'll give it that. See it with your dad? Or don't. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ad Astra was fairly good but not excellent. I found the story derivative of Sunshine, yet with less effects and quality. The acting was just ok. I didn't think the emotions were correctly transmitted by the movie and the dialogues. The effects were fine but since Gravity and Interstellar, it was lacking some degree of realism in terms of lighting, clarity and camera works. The motivation of the father and why he couldn't fix a problem, and cut communications, makes absolutely no sens. It's a big plot hole for me. I really like the moon sections the best. I give 60%. It's a well done movie but the story wasn't that solid or logical. Expand

Co-Writer/Director James Gray (“The Immigrant,” “The Lost City of Z”) clearly had lofty ambitions for “Ad Astra.” Some of his accomplishments are, wait for it, “stellar.” But other key elements of this film simply fail to take off.

Joseph Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness” is clearly the inspiration for this story (which creates inevitable comparisons to “Apocalypse Now,” a film that also drew upon Conrad’s novella). This film is set in the “near future.” To stop a series of crippling power surges caused by anti-matter experiments, Roy McBride (Brad Pitt) is sent by Space Comm (a weaponized NASA) to Neptune, the probable source of the problem. One complicating factor is that Neptune is the location of The Lima Project, which was manned by Clifford McBride (Tommy Lee Jones), Roy’s father, who is presumed dead. Will Roy find his father? If so, will he destroy his father’s work to stop the power surges? Or, as with “Apocalypse Now,” is there a risk he will become his father? Potentially, there’s plenty to think about.

Director Gray’s image of our dystopian future is interesting and thought-provoking, but it’s his visuals that are truly breath-taking. From the opening shot of Roy working on the International Space Antenna, the imagery is both memorable and mesmerizing. There are also some wonderfully snarky speculations about what the future may hold – Roy has to “fly commercial” to the moon, where a spacesuit-clad flight attendant sells him a blanket and pillow pack for $125 (some of Gray’s speculations are clearly months, rather than years, in the future).

With appearances by Tommy Lee Jones, Donald Sutherland, Liv Tyler and even Natasha Lyonne (“Russian Doll”) in a tiny cameo (really?!), there is plenty of star power to summon. But this film definitely is Pitt’s extraterrestrial vehicle. His layered portrayal of an externally calm but internally seething Roy, when contrasted with his straightforward role in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” offers further evidence that Pitt is more than just another pretty face.

So long as Gray adheres to the themes from “Heart of Darkness” – concerns about civilization, the risks of imperialism and exploitation – and even some less traditional topics (such as toxic masculinity), the plot is outstanding. Where “Ad Astra” veers badly off course is in its meditation on fathers and sons. This story line, while critical, is completely under-developed, apparently confusing Pitt’s voiceovers with legitimate plot development. As a result, the viewer regularly suffers vertigo – one moment experiencing a riveting space shoot-out with amazing special effects and dazzling cinematography, the next suffering through an interminable interlude of Roy brooding manfully about his own brooding. It’s admirable to shoot for the stars. Unfortunately, “Ad Astra” just misses.

Apocalyspse Now in space!

It's a journey from point A to point B with some stops in between. The protagonist, who also narrates the movie, has a classified mission to find a once respected man that has gone insane. Brad Pitt is Martin Sheen and Tommy Lee Jones is Marlon Brando. Might as well throw a shootout in there. And it does.

I'm not complaining though. I really enjoyed this movie, even if I Iwasn't as emotionally invested as I hoped. I reccomend it, though it wont be for everyone. It's cold and distant and hard to connect with, but that's actually a major theme in the film, so it gets a pass from me, but I understand if you can't quite get into it.

The adage 'Never meet your heroes' is certainly affirmed. However, in substance, this is a cautionary tale of human space exploration and the accompanying stupidity, madness, greed, and pride that follow such grandiose ambitions. I am certainly even more convinced humankind should focus on saving our existing spaceship, Earth, before we try to walk the stars. Some of the science also tends to stretch physics, where energy levels of phenomena defy logic. Visually mesmerizing, the film absolutely warrants an Imax viewing - the images of serene blue Neptune, in particular, haunt me. Like 'Last Jedi' I greatly deviate from the critics' consensus score on this much less beloved property. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Space related flicks had a good run in the last couple of years, buoyed by some of the best Directors in the business, such as Alfonso Cuaron, Ridley Scott and Chris Nolan. All of them are incredible films, that are impeccably made. Ad Astra at least fulfill that criteria. The production values are stellar, the acting by Pitt was great, and the first 10 minutes were superb. Then it went downhill from there, with story choices and logic that are seemingly out of place. In a Michael Bay film, these lapses were given but James Gray's Ad Astra felt like an action film, disguising as a 'drama'. Things simply happen for the sake of happening. Supporters of this film may liken this to '2001', but heck, Kubrick's masterpiece is a 'logical film'. It looks also into the psychological factor of its actors but you won't find non sensical plot points such as as (spoiler) space pirates and baboons attacking in a space station. All in all, its a pretentious space 'saga' that fails to achieve its so goals. Expand

The material is not up to their talents. Lee is a flatulent, philosophizing, mad scientist, and Pitt somehow manages to underplay the role of a cool and collected astronaut whose heartbeat never exceeds 80.

The look of the film is stunning, and there are some imaginative takes on gravity, including one scene where Pitt plummets on a planet where there is more gravity than on Earth. But the story is weak, and efforts to perk it up with a chase scene and vary mishaps en route to Neptune only serve to remind you of how little else is going on.

Everyone's saying it's like next best SciFi flick. I got burned again by the critics. Acting and cinematography were very well done, but beyond that, what a snooze-fest. Nothing interesting happens in this movie. I appreciate that it is trying to be grounded in reality but then it goes and throws that out the window with unbelievable physics in some sequences. I don't want to spoil anything, but this movie is basically 2 hours of waiting for something to happen. I wouldn't even call this SciFi. It's more like a family drama. Completely disappointed. If you are expecting something along the lines of 2001, Interstellar, etc., sorry but prepare to be bored to death. Even the Martian, which is a comparable movie to this, was leaps and bounds ahead. If you like nice space visuals, it might be worth it to see unless you have an awesome HD TV at home. Expand

Too bad because elements are beautiful and it's technically well made in trying to walk the line between "2001" and more commercial science fiction but ultimately shows the filmmakers to be too immature to fully realize their ambitious subject with the star not discerning enough on the script level. "Below the surface, there was nothing."

This quote from the movie pretty much sums it all up. To say that 'Ad Astra' failed to meet our astronomically high expectations would be a cosmically vast understatement. We'll get to that in a minute, but first we need to address the issue of the human buffalo sitting to our right who at first served as an annoyance, but as the movie painfully played on, became a welcomed distraction.

We've never seen a fellow patron shamelessly double-fisting popcorn into their mouth before, much less grunting it all down like some wild bison inhaling a pile of feed out on the plains. His form was both well-practiced and impressive.

In addition to the popcorn, he also ordered a personal thin crust sausage pizza. When it arrived, he whispered something to the runner. Much to our surprise, it was a request for a salt shaker. Because everyone knows that if there's one thing a sausage pizza doesn't have enough of, it's salt!

The application of the salt was quite liberal, of course. Not just a sprinkling over the entirety of the pie before eating it, mind you, but applying it to each individual slice before they were to be consumed for that extra bit o' salty goodness. And if you think we're exaggerating how much salt this human-bovine hybrid consumed, after the pizza was eaten, he literally swirled his index finger through the greasy salt streaks that remained on the tray and licked it. Mmm-tastes like an early onset heart attack!

Now back to the actual film review. Let's put it this way: you know there's a massive problem with the film when serious action sequences are drawing laughter from the audience. We couldn't laugh. We were too offended by the ridiculousness of it all.

To put it plainly, 'Ad Astra' has some of the most absurdly unrealistic scenes of any space movie we've seen. If you know anything about physics, botany, nutrition, astronomy, or just about any other branch of science, 'Ad Astra' will make your brain hurt.

Add to this the fact that the plot, production design, and cinematography are all quite horrid, and we've got ourselves a classic Razzie situation on our hands, people. Oh, and just one more thing: several media outlets have labelled the film "one of the best space movies in years." Saying as much is a gross injustice to last years criminally underrated 'First Man' and anyone who echoes this sentiment should be banished to the dark side of the moon (where apparently there are space pirates with Star Wars blasters roaming around)!

For me, all those films failed on a plot and character level because they were so focused on trying to “say something”. Theme needs to be felt organically by the audience via a character’s actions and the plot. When filmmakers hit us over the head with it by putting it in dialogue and voice over, it bores the audience. Except for critics who mistake that kind of movie making for deep art. There are a couple of touching moments and a couple of thrilling ones, but they are two few and far between. Expand

All of the technical aspects are great. Also, Brad Pit is also really pretty. Good acting on his part. Even though there wasn't a lot to act. The music is fine. But, that's it for the pluses. Overall, this is a two-hour road trip in space. The problem is, there are no roads in space, only darkness. So it's not even a road trip, it's a two-hour airplane travel. The script is as simple as a short comic at the end of a newspaper. Some storylines in the scrip just don't make any sense. Whole characters and scenes could have been gone without any consequences to the plot. The movie could be literally 30 minutes. It felt like 3 hours, even though, it's only 2. Your brain has nothing to do there. Mine tried. But the fact is, the movie is basically telling you everything. And it doesn't talk much. I don't understand why this was two-hour movie. It would have been a great short film. But instead, it's more of a good planetary exhibition rather than a good movie. Expand

However, the movie totally doesn't explain the cause of the big problem that our hero is trying to solve and how really it's causing such devastating effects across the galaxy. That unanswered question really does leave you feeling robbed by the movie.

Beautiful cinematography, Brad Pitt at his best and some tense action scenes early on- these are the good. The bad: the third act is a tedious go-nowhere slog (literally), there’s jump-scare reveal scene so dumb it seems to have teleported in from another movie, and the science is bad. Baaaaad. Gravity works and then it doesn’t, sometimes in the same scene; space is vast but then conveniently small when the plot requires it; and gunfights inside a spacecraft? No. Just no. And the over-arching theme ends up being: ‘human achievement is hard and turns you into an empty misanthrope- stay home and make babies, you’re better off.’ The horror. The. Horror. Expand

It is a visually beautiful film, Pitt does a fine job or acting, the concept is fine, but the space experience is silly, and the relationships are just plot driven. We really learn nothing about anyone in the story including Pitt, except that he thinks he should trust people more and wishes he could - not exactly profound ground there. What I would guess is that the writers were smart enough to know that what they were writing was dumbed-down, and the science was not even close to anything that would not inspire a real astronaut to laugh out loud at most of it, but they figured the average movie goer would not notice and would love - macho man goes to neptune. But it is an expensive missed opportunity to make a great movie just to make money. Expand

The lackluster, deadpan dramatic performance of Brad Pitt (who really should stick to comedy), combined with sluggish pacing, underwhelming special effects and a poorly written, poorly executed script, leave viewers wanting for much more than what this package delivers. What's worse, though, is that there were ample opportunities to salvage this story and to take it in surprising, refreshing and enlightening directions that would have made for a much, much better picture. Pay no heed to the critics on this one; all hype aside, it's a major disappointment and far from the epic masterpiece status that has been so undeservedly lavished upon it. Expand

There were so many actors in this movie that I was surprised to see, actors that I loved in their past shows/movies. Despite a good cast, this movie was ultimately very boring and somewhat anticlimactic. There were undoubtedly some visually striking and beautiful scenes in this movie, but nothing that hasn't been done before and better elsewhere. As far as sci-fi realism goes, this movie is fraught with inaccuracies at every step of Brad Pitt's journey from Earth beyond. Usually, its the scientific inaccuracies that can make a space movie exciting and seem futuristic or otherworldly. In Ad Astra, however, space towers on Earth, antimatter explosions, and magic rockets with unlimited fuel can't bring the heat up on the lukewarm script and storyline viewers (and the cast) are subjected to. How critics and users on here are referring to Ad Astra as "provocative" (CNN), or a "dissertation on the human condition" (hugoferreira), and Pitts performance as "award worthy" (patnian), is honestly inexplicable to me. There really wasn't anything especially provocative in this movie. Furthermore, it would be quite a stretch to claim that the poorly acted montage scene in which Pitt's supposed 72 days in isolation pass in a minute or so, or the rather one dimensional and hardly exposited father-son conflict, constitutes any sort of critique or exploration of the human condition. At the end of the day, was Ad Astra watchable? Yes I suppose so. Was it satisfying, engaging, or especially entertaining? Not really. Expand
