I met several people who came out disappointed thinking that this would be a horror movie in the style of The Conjuring so I notice that it is a suspense movie without jumpscares or ghosts but if scenes that are putting the tension and make you hair stand on end. The first half hour of movie starts quiet, but then not for a second. The effects of sounds are incredible, just like the soundtrack. Emily Blunt and John Krasinski are amazing. The only thing that I do not like are a couple of plot holes (I do not name them because they do not spoil) and that many things are repeated. Expand

I can't get into my real complaint with this movie without a spoiler, so I will just say I personally didn't like the way they ended it. It's as suspenseful as any movie you will ever see and brilliantly acted by everyone. I too wouldn't call this a horror film, but it is certainly a suspense/thriller that belongs with the best. The only thing I disliked was the design and the monsters them selves they were not scientific and way to unknown ( where do they come from? What are they?...) but I get why Krasinski was trying to focus more on the struggles of the family not the monsters. ( it also took way to long to figure out how to kill the monsters. ) Expand

An excellent film that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The acting is top-notch and the film makes clever use of sound, making jumpscares feel really well timed. Horror isn't going to get much better than this.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have just created an account purely to say how bad this film is. I truly cannot understand the positive reviews that I have read from both the film critics and users. Were they watching the same film? Nearly all of the negative reviews that I have read shed some light on this film, I wish I had read them first before even watching it. The whole story and plot seem to be a huge rip off from a novel I have recently read called 'The silence' by Tim Lebbon. I would like to know if he has seen this film and made a review. Firstly, why would you light a fire on top of a grain store? Are they trying to blow themselves up? Why, just why would you even consider having another child in a world where any noise will attract Jimmy Savilles hell demon? I mean come on!! I know, lets attract these claw bearing super efficient killers with the sounds of labour and newborn screaming, then tell your husband to protect the kids. I feel extremely sorry for that guy, I think secretly the actor playing the dad must of realised what a terrible choice he had made taking on this role and begged the writers to kill him off as early as posiible. Sorry my friend but it wasn't early enough, should of stayed with that old man. You could of used him to fake your death and lived happily ever after on your own down by your screaming waterfall.
Also, did anyone happen to notice the fact that whilst poor old daddy is screaming his life away, the kids are rolling down a hill in a bashed up old pickup truck that is somehow completely silent? I agree with another reviewer on here, it's a brilliant film to completely turn off your mind and have excrement injected into it. There are serious plotholes within this film that only lead me to draw one conclusion. The writers and directors of this film were actually the ones lighting the fires in the distance. So when there was no fires nearer the end of the film when the boy and girl had lit theirs. It was because the writers and directors had blown up on top of the grain stores they were lighting fires on earlier on in the film. From here on in the old man took over the writing and he commited suicide, this followed by the dad taking over and committing suicide, finally once everybody had lost their sanity they decided to just actually shoot one of the creatures and hey presto the creature died and so should of this damn movie!

This has everything horror films need to have. A Quiet Place induces terrifying amounts of authentic tension and insane suspense, while visually horrifying the viewers through subtleties of atmosphere and brutally relentless imagery. The focus on sound is masterfully utilized and brought out the absolute best in the amazing cast through their emotionally brilliant acting. The unique creature design is THE best I’ve seen in a decade, and they are truly grotesquely magnificently portrayed with legitimately realistic cgi. I was afraid they wouldn’t show them that much in the film, but they were prevalent and pulverizing in every frame they were in. In the end it does end pretty abruptly and you don’t really get origins or explanations regarding the alien creatures but that’s really my only nitpick. This is truly a new horror classic to behold and Krasinki is now at the forefront of great new directors and will be one to watch with his future ventures with his keen eye for detail and suspense. If you want to see an actually scary and intense ride, you have to see this film. Expand

This isn't your average thriller, but rather a smart and well executed film. From the very beginning you are placed into this world and feel as if you are with this family. You want to be just as silent as they are being for fear of what might happen. There is no wasted scene in the film as every moment give more context to what's happening in the world. This is a very personal story about one family and what they need to do in order to survive. The world building is very well done and interesting and the characters are fantastically written and acted. There is no weak link in the case. John Krasinski and Emily Blunt are perfect in their roles. The kids are also fantastic, with Millicent Simmonds being a standout. The film builds tension in such a great way and leads to a great climax. John Krasinski has put himself back on the map with this film and I can't wait to see what he does next. Expand

but there's so much stupidity in this movi, that makes you want the monsters to win and kill all stupid humans

for example: doesn't anybody know about isolating panels?

you know the world is full of blind super monsters that kill you hearing the lighter sound, and you live in an open wood cracking house alone in the country?

maybe humanity needs these kind of movies to reflect on our own stupidity

The critics must have been paid off, this is a total waste of time and I'd recommend that anyone who actually enjoyed this movie or was genuinely scared should hold their wife's boyfriend's hand next time they watch it. Not scary. Not intriguing. Filled with comedically fragile and moronic protagonists, with whom the viewer has no emotional attachments, due to zero character development or backstory. This is for a variety of reasons. I find most horror movies to have paper thin premises, unbelievable characters, and cheap thrills which don’t have lasting psychological impact. A Quiet Place unfortunately does not break any of these tropes. It is, however, an undeniably well-crafted film that comes extremely close.

The best part of the movie is its novel premise. The premise mostly works, but underneath, it does not get much deeper. There’s little to no subtext, few themes, and it becomes tiring by the end of the film’s brief runtime. It’s like a theme park ride. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. But it doesn’t stick with you. I saw the film with friends and went out to dinner afterwards. About 30 mins into dinner we started talking about the movie, which is when I realized I completely forgot I saw it even though we left the theater maybe 45 minutes earlier. There are memorable images, yes, but little else of the film “stays with you.” It’s upsetting, but not disturbing. Scary, but not horrifying. Thrilling, but not invigorating. The characters, especially the daughter, act irrationally for little reason besides plot convenience. I have good suspension of disbelief, but I was rolling my eyes by the end of the movie, as the “rules” of the film and the monsters were eventually thrown to the wayside and constantly contradicting themselves. The rules are the most important part of a horror/thriller, but they all end up being mostly forgotten if not directly broken. Where this creates an opportunity for subversion, instead it becomes apparent the film is just messy. An unforgettable first half-hour begins to unwind, and especially by the end, you realize the film is like puzzle pieces strewn about the floor without being put together for a greater purpose.

John Krasinski is obviously talented as a filmmaker, and I’m excited to see what he creates next. But he is also still a novice, and this is made clear. The film feels like it is in a hurry. Even the best, most disturbing and emotionally resonant scenes aren’t allowed to truly breathe and sink in before we are rushed to the next set piece. This makes for a breezy, brisk experience but one which never truly unsettles you. As a result, the impact is strong, but not lasting (if that makes sense). Again, there are few themes. The film isn’t really “about” anything at all. The characters are well-acted and while their motivations are clear, they aren’t believable. The emotional core of the film is the daughter’s struggle to accept her father’s love. She thinks he doesn’t love her, which is weird because at no point in the film does he ever demonstrate that he doesn’t love her unconditionally. In fact, he frequently goes out of his way to show her this. But she rejects it again and again. Why? I don’t know. Because she’s mad at him I guess. Why? Because he asks her to help out her mom one time. This is what I mean when I say the characters aren’t deep. Any further exploration reveals that they don’t really have a lot to say, and their feelings are mostly convenient for cheap storytelling.

While the premise is great, any scrutiny causes it to fall apart. That all being said, nobody asked Krasinski to make a masterpiece. It’s a fun popcorn movie, no more and no less. It’s a fast watch, and while I still contend that it doesn’t have lasting impact, the impact in the moment is still fun. What I’m trying to say is the screenplay is weak but everything else is handled mostly admirably. And who doesn’t love original blockbusters? Overall, I think most people would enjoy this film. Just don’t expect it to be a masterpiece, because it’s not. It is however pretty decent and miles better than most of the other horror movie dreck in theaters these days. I have a feeling Krasinski’s next film is going to be significantly better. He shows a lot of promise, but it’s definitely still at the beginning. Go buy a ticket to encourage him to make more movies, and to encourage studios to pick up original works.

John Krasinski (The Office) directed and stars with his real wife Emily Blunt as a married couple with kids. They have to live a near quiet existence because making ANY noise can be a matter of life and death. A Quiet Place is a taught drama/thriller that uses virtual silence to slowly build tension. The suspense that is built just by use of silence alone is amazingly well done. And Kraskinski does a great job in his first real directing role. The story is where things start to fall apart here as literally nothing is explained about the world and why things are happening. Also the big "reveal" at the end of the movie losses alot of its impact for anyone who's ever read a Venom comic or saw the old Spiderman cartoon show. Alot of what kept me interested in watching the movie was the great sound direction and the superb acting by Kraskinski and his wife, Emily Blunt. Even if there are only about a paragraphs worth of lines spoken in the movie, they do alot to keep the viewer emotionally invested. I just wish the story wasn't as dull as it was and had a little bit more content to it. I'd still recommend the movie anyone who is interested in a suspenseful thriller but I don't think it lived up to the lofty reviews that everyone seems to spout when they talk about this. Expand

It's literally sad how a horror film with barely any speech communication is a lot better than horror films with said speech communication. When I first saw this as a trailer before the movie was released, I thought this was going to be another one of those stupid horror movies, but boy, was I wrong in so many directions. I do recommend watching A Quiet Place if you literally want to get a lot of scares that actually work. Expand

Plus its Jim right, what could go wrong?

The movie centres around a family who are trying to survive in a decimated post-apocalyptic world that has been overrun with monsters (aliens?) that have ultra-sensitive hearing. Simple premise, concise and to the point.

A lot of friends who saw this movie in theatres recommended this movie to me simply because they thought that critics had grossly overrated this film, so that was my mindset when I watched this. As stated before, I thought the premise of this movie was interesting, but the execution of the film was mixed for me. As many have mentioned before me, there are lot of plot holes and conveniences that occur in this film to keep it moving along. This movie builds the setting well and wastes no time showcasing the dangers of the creatures that preside over the world as it is. I liked that the movie was able to introduce the threat quickly and traumatically and building a deep sense of worry for the family we have yet to become fully acquainted with. These kinds of introductions hit hard and let you know what you're in for. Unfortunately, it gets worse and worse from there.

I am sorry to say that outside of Emily & John's characters, there is no believability for the writing of the other characters, as in the children. The thing is, there cannot be that much writing to begin with, as most of the movie does not have actual person to person dialogue. It is not that the other actors are children and have little acting experience to speak of, it is simply that they were designed to conveniently cause every problem and raise tension out of sheer stupidity. Normally, you could also attribute this to youth experience, but when you put "Day 472" on the screen, that leads me to believe that these 2 kids have had almost a year and a half of experience in dealing with this world and its dangers, yet every single decision they make moving forward is absolutely asinine and contradicts their experience level completely.

On top of this, the conveniences to raise tension... Why on earth would you ever consider having a newborn baby in a world where you must be absolutely silent to survive? While this lead to one of the better scenes in the movie, where Emily's character has absolutely everything go wrong with her at once and has to work out of a terrible situation, it simply does not make any sense for them to do this, it is essentially a death sentence for the sake of plot tension. You can make soundproof rooms for the purposes of having a baby, but you can't do that to have a proper safe zone where accidental noise won't lead to immediate death... Research and newspaper clippings show that being underground is an exceptionally smart idea, but a normal farmhouse is where you decide to sleep, no fallout shelters in the middle of what looks like "flyover states" and their woodlands? Last resort weapon is a shotgun, but didn't think to find an assault rifle or handgun from the militarized safe zones with a silencer? Or at least look into how to design one? Those are just a few examples and I do not want to flood the whole review with them, but there are just too many to mention, so I can understand the reviews that delve into the red zone (0-3 rating).

+ Good premise
+ Excellent world building
+ Some good scenes of tension, regardless of contrived setup
+ Liked the design of the monsters
+ Emily Blunt & John Krasinski were great for the most part

- Contrived plot and over the top conveniences
- Over reliance on soundtrack
- Over reliance on CGI for monsters
- Unbelievable characters for both the son and daughter
- Poor writing and execution
- The ending sequence/scene was cringe-worthy

Overall, this film had an excellent and promising premise, but failed in execution and writing as there were way too many conveniences and plot holes to make the storyline believable. This movie is a 45 for me, and I think some of these critics should seriously re-evaluate how they score these types of films.

Notably, one of the best horror films of 2018.

The amount of dread and fright in this movie is subtle. I remember the condition of the theater house when I watched this film, surprisingly the environment is as quiet as the movie itself because you are anxious of what will happen something terrifying or frightening out of the film. This movie had made me jump or scare out of myself because of its sudden or unexpected scares.

The cast performance is great and their commitment in the movie of being silent as part of their roles is just astounding. Overall, this horror flick is an enjoyable and memorable treat.

The logic falls down in the back third for me, not just because of the many plot conveniences, but because things are not consistent. I don't want to spoil but it's a combination of the threat being over and the participants making it much worse for no good reason. The kids are unbelievably frustrating with their decision making even though they've been living in the world for over a year and appear to have the basics down pat. The end is Spielberg level absurdity, done badly.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie builds up the tension well. It's a bit hard to believe that the people surviving the invasion of these monsters would actually be so effing stupid, but hey if they had any smarts at all there would be no need for a sequel in which they wipe out the monsters. When you start to think about it, a whole lot of things just don't add up in this story. Stupid, stupid people. The monsters only react to sound, no smell, no sight, kill only to kill, not to eat. How the hell did they survive and how did they manage to terrorize humankind into near extinction? Of course they managed, because humankind is nothing more than a bunch of morrons, right? What could be the weakness of these monsters? Oh please!
Granted they're nice baddies at the start of the movie when you hardly see them at all, but near the ending it gets rather preposterous. The whole thing is a poorly thought through joke. But it was nice for the first half of the movie, hence a 5, which is very generous when you start thinking the world that was portrayed. Just after seeing the movie you'd probably rate it a bit higher, but if you start trying to make sense of it and start thinking about what you actually saw it just all falls to pieces and a 3 would be more than adequate. There is a LOT wrong with this movie. Things that just don't make sense. Leave your thinking hat at home, you won't be needing it if you want to enjoy the movie.

Actually, I did enjoy the film quite alot... despite some real stupid logic, and some dumbass decisions by the characters in the film. My main problem is that it's a horror film that fails to give any legitimate scares at all. Though this is considered as a horror film, I just wasn't scared because the plot of the film just simply doesn't completely work as a horror film. If anything, I can buy this film as a sci-fi thriller film and just that. Although I wasn't scared by the film, the horror-esque atmosphere, tone and feel of the film is consistently done well. The best part about this film is probably the concept. When done much better, this film could be one of my favorite films of this year. Emily Blunt and John Krasinski both give really good performances, and the kids weren't actually annoying, surprisingly. I like the film. It's a good "horror" film with a great concept that just wasn't thought out and delivered in the best way possible. I'm looking forward for Krasinski's works in the future.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Praise from the critics, 8.2 on IMDb, did I watch the correct movie?

A Quiet Place is one of the dumbest and most boring flicks I have ever seen. For a movie that positions itself as a horror title it has zero suspense and scary moments. The only scary thing about is is how people seem to praise it despite it being unoriginal dull garbage.

With the premise being "humans are hunted by blind monsters that react to loud noises", this basically becomes "Screamer, the movie", as this is the only trick that Krasinski offers - everything is silent, and sharp noises occur occasionally.

There is no plot in a Quiet Place. A moronic family just goes about their business and cannot muster some sort of a sound-proof room to be able to talk in, instead they use the sign language and go to a waterfall to scream. Yeah, I didn't make that up, the writers did. They do have a basement which they cover with a mattress and it seems to help, but for whatever reason they don't do it regularly. Also, in the beginning act the parents lose their youngest child whom they failed to teach properly that if he makes sounds he will die. What do they do after his death? Well they go ahead and make a new one! And then they put the baby in a coffin to muffle its cooing!

What else is there? Krasinski, apparently, has a foot fetish, as shots of naked feet occur every 5 minutes or so. The mute plump girl needs 3 damn occasions to understand that her hearing aid drives the monsters back. The film lasts an hour and a half, but most of the scenes are either too long or unnecessary at all. (Like with the old man in the woods.) The family survives for around a year, yet the father still can't properly hunt fish, he just grabs it with bare hands and it slips away, genius. The monsters are described as "indestructible" in the newspapers, yet they die from a single shotgun headshot. This is just what I remember off the bat, a Quiet Place offers even more idiotic character actions and dull predictable scenes.

Apparently this is John Krasinski's directorial debut. Well, at least he shouldn't have trouble improving on himself later with the bar set so low.

I’m rewriting my review of A Quiet Place to clarify why I give it a perfect score of 10.

A Quiet Place is a film that is beautiful in every sense of the word. It’s scary, it’s visually remarkable, and above all it’s heartfelt. From a pure storytelling stance, it paces itself perfectly as it drops the audience directly into a nightmarish world and focuses the people living in that world rather than on the specifics of that world itself. This is a story about people and how they always find reasons to keep living in spite of sometimes unforgiving circumstances. It succeeds as a horror because it plays upon something that every person truly fears: failing to protect those they love.

The performances in this movie are absolutely phenomenal. They are real and raw. Emily Blunt and John Krasinski display and evoke genuine emotion as they portray parents that would sacrifice anything for their children. There is nearly no dialogue in this movie (when there is, it’s heart-wrenching and authentic), yet these actors somehow make you care so much about the characters they portray. I was in tears at certain parts of this movie as I felt so connected to the hardships this family endures.

Everything visually about the film is near-perfect. From set design to the cinematography, all of it makes the world real and further serves to bring you into the world that has been created here.

Now, I am not saying that this movie is perfect. There are a couple instances of over-reliance on jump scares. In addition to that, the quick and effective pacing leaves plenty of room for unanswered questions. But those questions don’t really translate into plot holes. They’re just questions that, if given enough thought, do have answers. The reason I give this a perfect score is not because it’s a perfect movie, but because it is a masterpiece. It’s the most entertained I have ever been in a movie theatre, and it succeeds at everything it attempts to convey: horror, selling the world it creates, and tugging at the heart-strings. A Quiet Place's themes of family, grief, forgiveness, sacrifice, and redemption are handled with force that hit me like a truck and they have stuck with me since my first viewing. All things considered, I do not hesitate to call it a masterpiece of filmmaking in every conceivable way.

Story: 10
Acting: 10
Script: 10
Visuals/Sound: 10
Entertainment Value: 10

The concept of not making any sound or speaking adds an interesting dynamic to the movie and makes for some really great facial performances from the actors. The horror and tension is only heightened by the lack of sound, making you constantly on the edge of your seat as you pray each character does not slip up and make noise. The story focuses on a family, meaning the characters are very close and this allows for the characters to be very relatable to audience members. It is the type of horror movie everyone should see. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Are you people on drugs? Calling this the best HORROR movie of the decade?? Even calling it a horror movie is pushing it too far. Do you know what horror even means? There is nothing horrific in this movie. We can call it thriller, suspense but nowhere near horror. There are also many stupid things about this movie that just kill the entertainment. Why did the girl give the toy to the child? She wanted to kill him indirectly? Stupid. Why don't they live near a waterfall or a river to mask the sounds? Stupid. Why didn't they build a deaf chamber where they can talk freely? Stupid.
It was an ok movie at best. I don't understand the hype. It's not that good. I'm disappointed in this movie and I wouldn't recommend it or watch it again. It seemed like a waste of time. Not interesting. Therefore I will give it a low score to balance those hyped and just plain wrong ratings.

you should tell her..

A Quiet Place

An idea or a concept isn't everything, there actually factors lots of stuff; from writing to execution or from characters to performance, and it has got everything just in the right place and a bit more than that. The sheer brutal silent pitches on screen are more horrific than its eerie world, appalling creatures and breathtaking sound effects. There are few sequences installed in, so perfectly that one fails to not connect or be effected with it that easily results into teary eyes and long gasping of horrors. John Krasinski's latest project is devoured with his affection towards horror and that is exactly the key that not only unlocks this mystic place into something colossal but connects frame-to-frame to the audience with the help of his brilliant execution skills. Addition to that, the performance objective is scored utterly by the whole cast on chemistry where even though Emily Blunt has a wider range than John Krasinski, he steals the show as a sore middle aged man surviving the nature. Bryan Woods, Scott Beck and John Krasinski; the co-writers, tends to keep the practicality evolving in the script (like when John loads the shotgun carefully and advances further but doesn't actually use it) despite of its genre, keeping the crisp alive to resemble through it. A Quiet Place is surprisingly a character driven feature that hits hard and fast (it is edited perfectly) with its 'mature' script that only offers hints of ideas and still creates the anticipated impact, narrowing it down to a metaphorical tone.

Despite a few minor plot holes, the story is solid, inventive and skillfully executed, making stunning use of elements -- like sound and sound editing -- that typically don't get to play center stage in a film's finished product. What's more, the picture's richly layered narrative is deftly punctuated with symbolism that carries deeper meanings, a quality rarely, if ever, seen in releases in this genre. Go see this one, and be prepared to have the crap scared out of you. Expand

What's it like?: The inspiration for this film could be The Diary of Anne Frank. Other recent similar works including 2015’s Hidden. In this film, the alien hunters are highly perceptive of unnatural sounds (but cannot see well?!). The family of five hides in a farm and go about daily activities very quietly, but a series of events eventually draw the aliens to the farm for a final showdown.

Pros: 1) Sci-fi films need rules on what is feasible and what is not. This film stick to these rules consistently and the film thus works very well.

2) The sound effects and sound editing were done very well here. The sound comes on and goes silent at different times. It also portrays the difficulty deaf people have with their hearing devices. It is very quiet for most of the film and my fellow cinema-goers were actually very careful not to fiddle with their food packaging then, which is quite an achievement for a film. 3) Needless to say, this film is a super-tense thriller. Impending dangers are given time to build up thus making the experience for the viewers very tense. The last film I saw that was similarly tense was 2017’s Get Out and that was excellent too.

4) Emily Blunt's acting is good enough to win an Academy Award. No holocaust film required! Cons: 1) Sight is the most important sense for any species and is required for that species to dominate all others. It is unlikely that an alien species able to build spaceships to come to Earth have such poor eyesight. A caveat of this is that the aliens could merely be creatures dropped off from space by their more sense-able masters. 2) Even if the hunters could not see (well?) it doesn’t make sense for the family to highlight the farm that they live at by turning on all the lights at night and farming their corn in such neat rows. The aliens could have some spaceship or drones with sensors that can see such things.

3) No explanation was provided for why the farm had a steady supply of electricity. Most part of the film takes place more than a year after the aliens appear. Is the National Grid still operational or does the farm have a generator, which would be noisy though? 4) It is not possible to physically upturn a nail in the way shown in the film, but a greater issue here is that the film fails to incorporate this nail into the story, towards the end of the film.

5) Why would the father set up operational microphones and speakers at home when this could accidentally create unwanted sounds?

How would the different age groups rate it?

Children: (This is too tense for children.)
Teens: Excellent
Young adults: Excellent
Medium age adults: Excellent
Old adults: Excellent

Rating: 5/5 (no half scores). Pay to watch it in the cinema and to buy the DVD.

To put this in perspective, I have just made an account on metacritic just so I can write this review. This movie was incredible. From the very first scene, to the very last, this movie drew me in and did not let me go. I typically find thriller/scary movies dumb in a lot of ways. From how the characters act to the storyline and so on. This movie surprised me by how smart and intriguing it was and I was honestly sitting on the edge of my seat the entire time. The acting was incredible by all the characters, with each one having their own moments of really shining and the directing was also superb. Are their some flaws in this movie? Perhaps, because no movie is perfect. But as of right now, it is really hard for me to think of any. For the thriller genre, this is one of the best movies I have seen in quite some time and I can honestly recommend this movie for everyone to see. Hope you all get something out of this and are encouraged to watch this movie! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This film was well shot and acted, but it was still idiotic. The monsters as an idea were scary. They didn't pay off. The mother is up and at `em just an hour or two after giving birth with no meds. The guys do all the dumb stuff. Have equal fault. The wife stepping on a nail doesn't count. They had no real defence plan. Their home was wide open in a field. They acted like a mattress would save them. They put a baby in a box after silently having sex to make it THERE MONTHS AFTER THEIR 4 YEAR OLD DROPPED BECAUSE OF THE DEAD CHICK WHO SHOULD HAVE DIED BECAUSE SHE CAN'T TELL HOW LOUD SHE IS!!! Anyway, I hate the movie. Dad thinking he can make a hearing implant... Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie was a waste of $$$ and time, It was boring and really stupid. John K. is great no doubt, (how did they get him to act in this filler film?). Scenes are predictable anyone who rated this garbage above 3 stars is being generous. Like in other movies made for 13 year old girls, the all wise teenager figures out how to kill the poorly generated alien. It is NOT scary, It is NOT original, Its nothing NEW, It is dumb. Watch Signs (2002), War of worlds (2005), or 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016). This is overrated just like Get Out (How did they get awards for that?). Please STOP the fake reviews. Metacritic loses credibility. Expand

If I had to point out some downsides I would say that some of the logic is flawed but that can easily be ignored. The ending is also a little cliche. But overall it's an amazing movie which is definitely a must see.

In this short little movie, you linger on a family of four’s attempts to stay mute so three carnivorous noise-hungry creatures in the area can’t find them.

You never get a good glance at the eyeless creatures other than some scary venom teeth and the fact that they crawl on all four like spiders. Thus, in the silence that these creatures scare the public into, anything that is heard simply BOOMs, almost a jump-scare in impact. Yet mom and dad still manage to find A Quiet Place where they can dance to earbud music together while he caresses her baby bump, allowing a brief piece of safe familiarity.

The hush living quarters the family lives in makes even paper ruffles more fearsome inside each of their individual perspectives: I likewise felt afraid to move even slightly in my theater seat while watching. The details that make up the family’s predicament screams mastery: food must be eaten off corn leaf plates and monopoly must be played using wool pieces, numerous scattered foreshadowing bits toy around your fearful anticipation in the process. It helps you to feel relieved once free speech is safely permitted around a thunderous waterfall, until you are set back in dangerous floods again set to attack.

Although the pregnant mother’s due date lands one day before a full moon, one of her first seen actions still conveys devotion in how she very carefully obtains her son’s meds, her ultimate realization of persistence’s importance sparking the evocative parental themes. The kids demonstrate themselves in persistence too, meeting us where we’re most sensitive, for we’ve all been a confused kid in a dark monstrous world before.

The father shows marriage’s power beyond personal dilemma whilst he searches after a cure for his daughter’s deafness, the constant dissatisfaction visualized with hot solar rays behind them in tension. Besides just casting his real-life wife, director John Krasinski (Lip Sync Battle) cast a deaf actress to portray the deaf daughter, resulting in authenticity of a seldom seen predicament: a deaf girl raised by hearing people who hope to change her. Alongside her brother, each eventually ascertain one another’s needs in the process of expressing a sibling’s commitment.

Thus, everyone has something different to zip behind secretive lips until you just want to throw a comforting wool blanket around each of them and sing a lullaby for their sanity. It makes you reconsider your own personal preconceptions upon communication to understand their unique intense love.

In pasting this complex piece together, John Krasinski’s efforts as director, star, co-writer, and co-executive producer each succeed to deafening applause! His on-screen performance stands out the most of his four efforts as a lack of a home glows in his softly paced eye motions. In the rare occasion he does speak, Krasinski breathes out a caressive necessity to desperately guard others. You often wonder when he’ll fall on his knees in self-ransom, fitting his final epiphany about the value in life or death.

However, not everything about Krasinski’s breakout project is perfect: the accompanying musical score contributes nothing for a film attempting no noise. The absence of music worked in No Country for Old Men, so think how much stronger it could turn out here! Plus, without fault on the producers’ affordability, cinematographer Charlotte Bruus Christensen (Fences, Molly’s Game) creates too few claustrophobic closeups on these victims. A similar issue to exploit a limited financial plan results in poor CGI monsters.

But like Get Out, a low-budget Black nightmare, A Quiet Place is a low-budget White nightmare. A ghost town appropriately opens the piece, streets beneath amber leaves, buzzards inaudibly swooping above, straightaway establishing a setup of Whiteness comeuppance. Whiteness in this future may be the world’s sole race left, any attention erased toward the natives they took America away from. Thus, the 100% Caucasian cast must keep below a whisper—or else face immediate death by their childhood fears, until a hard truth hits that nobody truly owns the Earth.

Obviously though, you will most remember the nonstop thrills, which pile on top of each other until the information built up erupts into a powerful finale. Thank goodness that it’s still rather early into the year, and we already got an explosive instant classic to scream about!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well directed and intense if you can buy into the rules of the movie. However, it unravels much in the way Signs did, which is a very similar movie, at the end regarding the creatures weakness. As a viewer we are expected to suspend disbelief that the whole world (and the world's militaries) are so stupid that they got overrun by aliens who can simply be destroyed by amplified higher frequency sound? Really? Realistically if this happened, the solution would have been found within 24 hours after observing the creatures are highly sensitive to sound and the military would have been able to target and destroy this foreign enemy with ease. Just saying it really drove down the score. It's hard to ignore and definitely takes me out of the world building realism the film tried to establish. Very high marks for most everything else though. Great acting, technical film aspects, pacing, tension, direction etc. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So this is a tough review, but I'll try to lay out why I've given it a low score (which is clearly not something most will agree with). Plot: The plot was the reason I wanted to see the movie in theaters. I heard great things, and I saw the memes about people being quiet in the theater, and surprisingly there were plenty of moments where you could make at least some noise to get comfortable or breath easily, like when music played or they were in a loud place. So the plot was fantastic, make the audience FEEL what it would be to be in the world through the silence. however...

Silence: This doesn't make a comfortable viewing experience. I wish the movie theater had spaced the chairs out, and given everyone headphones because holy crap was I uncomfortable with the silences and you could tell so was everyone else. If you see this movie, THE CHAIRS YOU SIT IN WILL BE VERY IMPORTANT. I spent more time focused on how uncomfortable I was than on the movie itself (I'll try not to rate the movie on that but it's partly the movies fault for well, being that good at bringing you into the world. There were moments where I couldn't breath, not because of the movie being scary or whatever, but because I didn't want to be an **** and ruin the experience for other people. So while im starving myself of air, all i can feel is the uncomfortable chair, and all i can hear is the **** munching popcorn loudly as **** behind me.

The trailer: If you saw the trailer, you saw the movie. There are only two other developments other than that: the father dying, and the hearing aid he fixed for his daughter being the secret weapon vs the monsters. That's basically it, the trailer sets you up for wondering if the mother will be killed along with her baby during the birth, but the solution to that was so easy. Emotional connection: I only felt connected to the mother who clearly cares for her children and husband, and does everything to protect them, to the father who sacrifices himself and has to basically fix every little mistake the kids make, and that's it.

DEAF **** Seriously, even in the post apocalyptic world where you literally have to be quiet or be eviscerated by a monster, this **** managed to get both her little brother killed and her father, through rebellious teenage angst. I have never read a story about some teenager in the roman empire rebelling against their father and idk, ending up getting them killed. I have never heard of a teenager in the UK during ww2 bombing rebelling against their father as the bombs dropped on their heads, getting their father killed. I have never heard of a kid, knowing full and well it is a life and death situation, being ****ing angsty, and rebelling against their parents, and getting them killed. So why the **** does this kid disobey her parents again and again and again and again and then finally gets them killed? She's a sociopath, a narcissist, doesn't care about anyone else but herself. I could not understand why they wrote her character this way, and it really ruined the movie for me. We're supposed to identify with her angst but holy **** what a ****ing **** If I had managed to get my father and brother killed, I would drown myself. She actually doesn't even seem to give a **** that her father loves her, or that he's hurting from the sons death, she only cares about her own feelings, and that's what ends up getting her father killed. What a selfish **** So I'm giving this movie a 3 for making me hate the outcome, really the wrong person died

Truth is, without the saving plot device of the hearing aid, this entire family would be killed so quickly without the father. He saves them over and over and over, there is absolutely no way they survive after his death.

Truth is the deaf girl should have died in the cornfield, should have died in the grain (as should he brother, and it was her fault) and should have died in the car, and then should have died in the house. Must be nice to have plot armor though

For me, the first half had little tension (not edge of my seat from beginning to end as I had read), though the calm quiet story building was well done. That said, once things ramped up, there was some major tension! I think I might have been gripping the seat arm rest at times. I've read others complaining against plot holes, but I'm not one to get critical like that. Taking the movie for what it is, it was intriguing and enjoyable. I have almost always avoided horror movies (I don't like the unnecessary cruelty, gratuitous violence and blood splashing) but I was very pleased with the restraint shown in the making of this film. As others have noted, it centered on a caring and intelligent family, and little gore was shown. I applaud the film makers for finding a great balance between creating stressful suspension, but not showing things that go over the top. I suppose the trend in horror films like most things is to go further than previous movies to still keep it shocking. Cool to see that it works to pull back and still make a very successful film! With a premise like this sound is everything. If Krasinski and crew had messed up even once on this front it is very likely that the whole movie would have come crumbling down. Everything is in deft hands though. Something you can see in the little touches. Like how when the attention is on any member of the Abbott other than their deaf daughter you can hear the background noises like wind. When she is the focus it is complete and utter silence. A tiny thing, but it's the small stuff in A Quiet Place that tends to make the biggest impressions.

The attention to detail in every aspect of how these characters live their lives is incredible. So much thought and care went into creating this world. It genuinely portrays the Abbotts as intelligent, resourceful people. When things inevitably begin to go downhill for the family, it's not because one of them slipped up, broke the rules, or did something outright stupid. It's a random, totally natural and faultless event that sends danger to their doorstep. They never slip up afterwards either. Every second is a careful, calculated reaction to the downward spiral their night has become. It is so refreshing to watch something where everyone onscreen is doing their best to stay on top of things. Even the kids show a ton of restraint.

I had no idea I would be watching something so emotional when I put this on. The family drama isn't exactly original, but the themes of parenthood of familial love are still powerful. We don't really see these kinds of morals anymore outside of animated kid flicks. Nice to see a movie aimed at adults have that kind of message in an era where it seems that more homes are being torn apart from the inside than ever before. Loving your neighbor is great guys, but we should really stop letting that get in the way of loving those we sit around the table with every night.

A lack of noise and minimalistic dialog are used to create an commendably oppressive atmosphere that is adept a pulling the audience into being just as quiet as those they are watching onscreen. The amount of hold your breath moments may cause you to pop a lung and there's a surprising tearjerker that capitalizes naturally on all that emotional buildup in a way that doesn't feel like a cheap shot.

There is a letdown though and unfortunately it's a pretty big one. While not enough to ruin the movie, the weak attempts at getting a jolt from the audience are far more numerous than the actually effective scenes of slow, rising terror. As uniquely setup by the film's wonderful use of silence they may be, a predictable jump scare is still a predictable jump scare. The use of your typical, unnaturally perfect movie baby is also noticeable. Only crying when the set-piece calls for it. A shotgun is fired in the same room as the infant at one point and there's not a peep out of it. A minor blunder in an otherwise highly believable sequence of events.

A wonderful concept does not go wasted in this immaculately thought out and lovingly made allegory for parenthood. It establishes a sense of danger early on with an unforgettable opening catastrophe that keeps suspenseful from that point on. Generic scare tactics aside, this is one of the greats of modern horror and I hope this isn't Krasinski's only foray into the genre.
