A must see in the theater! One of the best parts is the silence and hearing the “oh my god” from other movie goers. Great movie overall.

A Quiet Place is directed by John Krasinski and is really his first major release as a director. Yep, not only did Jim from The Office direct a horror/thriller, but he directed a fantastic horror/thriller. I was interested in this film when IA Quiet Place is directed by John Krasinski and is really his first major release as a director. Yep, not only did Jim from The Office direct a horror/thriller, but he directed a fantastic horror/thriller. I was interested in this film when I saw the first trailer. It was different than the typical horror films we see these days, and it was also interesting that it was directed by Krasinski, and starred him and his wife. Then, when the first reviews dropped from SXSW, my expectations skyrocketed and I got very excited about it. And I gotta say, it is now my favorite film of the year (so far). Story: One of the things I love about A Quiet Place is the subtle world building. I wasn't presented with some five minute narration describing how the world reached the state it is in and what the aliens are and how many people are left; I was thrown right into the world, and along the way I was given some backstory through newspaper clippings and notes taken by Krasinski's character. This also left me with a bit of room to speculate how exactly everything came to be. Anyway, the story is that essentially aliens have somehow invaded Earth, but they are blind and hunt anything that makes sound. So if humans are to survive, they must stay as quiet as they can. It isn't focused on the government trying to defeat the aliens, though, or about a group of humans trying to save humanity, it is just about a family that is trying to survive in the world the way it is. And of course, sh*t eventually hits the fan and the aliens come into play. I loved the story, but it wasn't really the story itself that made this film so enjoyable to me. The sound design was fantastic. This is a very quiet movie (shocker), but every sound that is made carries some significant weight. So much as dropping a fork on the ground could mean certain death. But that's not what made the film for me either, it was the tension that is present throughout the entire runtime. Every time it started to build up while I was watching it I bet my heart rate started to go up. Great stuff. Nonetheless, there are a few plot holes and things that can/will be questioned, but everything else makes up for that stuff.

Script: There's not a whole lot of dialogue in this film, but it's still impressive to write a film this good without using much dialogue. It's not easy to do, but they accomplished it here. Acting: Unsurprisingly, solid acting from everyone involved. It is always a bit concerning when kid actors have significant roles in a movie, but they killed it. Cinematography: I think that the sound design is really the standout when it comes to the technical stuff, but the cinematography was solid, although nothing that will blow your socks off. Overall: This is the best film of the year so far to me, not even a competition, but we still have two-thirds of the year left so I guess it does have a lot of competition coming up. If you like horror/thrillers that involve aliens...you'll be pretty satisfied with this one.

There's a scene in this film where fireworks are shot off in a certain time of distress and it's honestly one of the most memorable and well directed scenes I've seen in awhile. There’s a whole sequence involving Emily Blunt that is among the most white knuckling scenes I’ve ever seen in a horror film. The acting is truely superb, with standouts being Blunt and Millicent Simmonds, who plays the daughter of Blunt and John Krasinski in the film. I have but one major flaw with this film, and it’s with some jump-scares. As stated before, most of them work, but there are a couple that are false scares and disappointing when compared to the rest that in the movie. Beyond that, this is a must-see and without a doubt one of the best films of the year. Expand

It's amazing that Jim Halpert from the Office had a horror movie masterpiece in him. It's something you'd never expect from him. Ever. Needless to say, this movie IS a masterpiece, with a solid premise that really excites anyone who hears it. A Quiet Place will have you gripping your seat from start to end. It's brilliantly acted, directed, and co-written by John Krasinski, proving that he may be a director to reckon with in the near future. Emily Blunt gives a solid performance and so does the kids, who you'd think would be the worst part of a movie like this, but they're really good and super believable. The story (besides the incredible premise) is brief but brings power with every scene that is put on screen. You will quickly care for this family, more so than other on-screen characters in other horror movies. Plus, it is clear that the writers played situations cleverly, using spoken words only when the situation actually calls for it. No one's an idiot (actually one exception but spoiler) and the family is betrayed in a way that makes you believe they're real, which is really hard for the horror genre. With amazing pacing, and use of sound, A Quiet Place manages to build tension in the most brilliant way possible -- and Marco Beltrami's nail biting score only adds to this tension building. The creatures are nothing short of terrifying, and could possibly land a place next to Alien and Predator in terms of design and pay off. The movie uses sound so excellently and only makes for a more intense experience. If there is one downside, it's that some of the scares seem really cheap and I mean REALLY cheap. Plus, there is a few (TINY) parts that could be considered plot holes, but they're easily forgiven -- same with the CHEAP scares, because it is as I said before, the horror takes second and the drama takes priority. At its heart, A Quiet Place is a family drama about humans (a family) having to adapt to a new and dangerous threat, while also teaching a valuable lesson on family and the importance of the sense that is sound. You should watch it, then watch it again, because this movie deserves it, and other horror movies should be taking note, because THIS is how GOOD HORROR is done. Expand

With a premise like this sound is everything. If Krasinski and crew had messed up even once on this front it is very likely that the whole movie would have come crumbling down. Everything is in deft hands though. Something you can see in the little touches. Like how when the attention is on any member of the Abbott other than their deaf daughter you can hear the background noises like wind. When she is the focus it is complete and utter silence. A tiny thing, but it's the small stuff in A Quiet Place that tends to make the biggest impressions.

The attention to detail in every aspect of how these characters live their lives is incredible. So much thought and care went into creating this world. It genuinely portrays the Abbotts as intelligent, resourceful people. When things inevitably begin to go downhill for the family, it's not because one of them slipped up, broke the rules, or did something outright stupid. It's a random, totally natural and faultless event that sends danger to their doorstep. They never slip up afterwards either. Every second is a careful, calculated reaction to the downward spiral their night has become. It is so refreshing to watch something where everyone onscreen is doing their best to stay on top of things. Even the kids show a ton of restraint.

I had no idea I would be watching something so emotional when I put this on. The family drama isn't exactly original, but the themes of parenthood of familial love are still powerful. We don't really see these kinds of morals anymore outside of animated kid flicks. Nice to see a movie aimed at adults have that kind of message in an era where it seems that more homes are being torn apart from the inside than ever before. Loving your neighbor is great guys, but we should really stop letting that get in the way of loving those we sit around the table with every night.

A lack of noise and minimalistic dialog are used to create an commendably oppressive atmosphere that is adept a pulling the audience into being just as quiet as those they are watching onscreen. The amount of hold your breath moments may cause you to pop a lung and there's a surprising tearjerker that capitalizes naturally on all that emotional buildup in a way that doesn't feel like a cheap shot.

There is a letdown though and unfortunately it's a pretty big one. While not enough to ruin the movie, the weak attempts at getting a jolt from the audience are far more numerous than the actually effective scenes of slow, rising terror. As uniquely setup by the film's wonderful use of silence they may be, a predictable jump scare is still a predictable jump scare. The use of your typical, unnaturally perfect movie baby is also noticeable. Only crying when the set-piece calls for it. A shotgun is fired in the same room as the infant at one point and there's not a peep out of it. A minor blunder in an otherwise highly believable sequence of events.

A wonderful concept does not go wasted in this immaculately thought out and lovingly made allegory for parenthood. It establishes a sense of danger early on with an unforgettable opening catastrophe that keeps suspenseful from that point on. Generic scare tactics aside, this is one of the greats of modern horror and I hope this isn't Krasinski's only foray into the genre.

What the movie excels at is expressing human emotion without speaking a single word. Most of the movie dialog is through sign language and facial expression, and you can tell what the characters in the movie are going through. There are moments when they are able to speak without attracting the monster, but those scenes aren't as powerful as the rest of the movie.

Overall, all the actors did an amazing job at making the characters feel real.

TheseThe story revolves around a family (of 4, after the youngest son died) being 'stuck' in a farm, where its general surrounding (and likely the entire rural country side area) is being roamed by three flesh eating aliens/monsters. These monsters are unique in that they are blind, but highly sensitive to loud sounds/noises, which they rely sorely on for hunting preys. The first early part of the film has slight problem on the pacing. Things start to get tense when the family members in the film got separated, and subjected to traumatic, life threatening attacks by the monsters, after an accidental loud noise in the house attracted them directly to the farm. Other than the horror aspect, the family love/bonding aspect is reflected very strongly, and brought out in an emotional, though sad way.

This is an above average horror movie you should consider watching, even if you are not a fan of horror films.

By the way, I read some of the negative reviews, which are mostly complaints about illogical parts in the film. Seriously, it is impossible to make a 'good' horror film if the film maker has to to be logical to the dot. Horror and science fiction is about make-believe made into a story. In fact, if every film is subjected to high level scientific scrutiny in the logical aspect, almost all films (especially horror and sci-fic genre) will be **** If the film never mention about any logic aspect of any plots or ideas in the film, it is either meant to be unknown or open-ended. If you want the proper answer, ASK the director or screen writer. If you want logic based video productions, go watch science documentaries. Do not consider watching any horror/sci fic films, since they will all seem illogical to you. And if this movie is a bad horror film, then what is a good horror film? Name any title that qualifies that. lol

I've read others complaining against plot holes, but I'm not one to get critical like that. Taking the movie for what it is, it was intriguing and enjoyable. I have almost always avoided horror movies (I don't like the unnecessary cruelty, gratuitous violence and blood splashing) but I was very pleased with the restraint shown in the making of this film. As others have noted, it centered on a caring and intelligent family, and little gore was shown. I applaud the film makers for finding a great balance between creating stressful suspension, but not showing things that go over the top. I suppose the trend in horror films like most things is to go further than previous movies to still keep it shocking. Cool to see that it works to pull back and still make a very successful film! We shout out loud with gratitude in the face of an archaic cinema facet revivified by post-modern suspense genre: Silence.

What was the last time you watched a nearly-silent suspense film made by a major Hollywood studio? It seems that this question has no answer. The main originality builder here is its ability to evolve in a particular not-talking film, that's already a bombshell. With an over limited use of dialogues and an intrepid skill in conceiving an irrefutably captivating story with coherence and vigor, it seems impossible to make a movie without the actor's voice, for many artists is a requirement for storytelling understandability, since the characters are the link to the viewer, they make the connection, but, not all the stories take this kind of paths. Broadly speaking, this kinematic tool seems to be the engine of the idea, however, dissecting my own experience and some spectators' opinions, such a factor didn't work in top form.

Christopher Tellefsen deserves personalized recognition thanks to his decision of reducing as much as possible the length, synthesizing the crucial parts and discarding what doesn't contribute, focusing the core of an entertaining genre film. Time flies by as situations are located in the right place, carefully beneficial choices. After the screening, I found four memorable scenes, dark dreams coming true thanks to a set of artistic and creative components to achieve such level of effectiveness and unbeatable naturalness: The first one takes place at the beginning, just before the main titles make their appearance as vanishing powder; the second one is an incident inside a creepy silo; The third one is a painful sacrifice demanding a few wipes and the fourth one, exhibited in the last act, is starring Emily Blunt in a bathtub and the danger lurking, certainly brutal and the best of all the movie by far.

The sound section is good, but that isn't enough. Despite pictures had to execute the narrative function the dialogues could not, the accompaniment was to be exceptional, as original as the ideas of the script and terribly disturbing as it should be in a horror film. Two Oscar nominations, but Marco Beltrami's soundtrack doesn't have much to highlight because it complies with simple emotional, atmospheric compositions and loudly cheap high-sounding sounds when the creatures make their entrance, it's quite common and unimaginative in a manner of speaking. A huge dissatisfaction with such powerful references, however, the biggest disappointment was the sound editing work, which plays its role half-heartedly, it doesn't use an important feature in the way it should, a terrible flaw. While on several occasions a good frightening impact is achieved by breaking the silence with an accidental sound, all the alternatives the story had are not explored. With his third work as a director, John Krasinski burst into as an inventive and original voice for suspense genre. His film is a tension construction class, as well as a visual delight thanks to a sensible and exciting perspective on a story that isn't wasted. It's amazing to see how he understands the function of each camera movement, knows how to keep an exquisite timing between the characters and sets up vicious sequences that leave the spectator petrified. We place a value on the prioritization of the coherence and storytelling sharpness, bringing the characters in the foreground, not relegating efficient jump-scares with oppressive atmospheres leading to a breathtaking climax. Like hotcakes on the tables of the major studios, he announces himself as one of the most innovative Hollywood filmmakers and screenwriters at the expense of this spectacular debut that took everyone by surprise — let's just look at its worldwide box office, making "horror" movie history — not for his role as an actor, but for his unexpected endowments as far as cinematographic constructions are concerned. "A Quiet Place" by John Krasinski is a dystopian, heartbreaking, nerve-wracking nightmare, any reluctant spectator will end up surrendering to the supreme tension of this sci-fi thriller starring the never quiet life of this prepared family. Sometimes intense, poignant and irrecoverably tense; the humanity in its narrative mechanisms, the power of the pictures and the fireproof charm between the leads guarantee one of the best forays in the genre this year; alongside "Get Out" by Jordan Peele, it's really fascinating many comedy actors keep tremendous creative minds for different genres, ironic thing, we find horror in humor. Great achievements and broken promises, the film leaves an inexplicably bittersweet flavor, perhaps more bitter than sweet, because it disappoints to understand that most of the time, when hyper-positive buzz catapults a film tends to be a dissonant marketing squeal.

It's literally sad how a horror film with barely any speech communication is a lot better than horror films with said speech communication. When I first saw this as a trailer before the movie was released, I thought this was going to be another one of those stupid horror movies, but boy, was I wrong in so many directions. I do recommend watching A Quiet Place if you literally want to get a lot of scares that actually work. Expand

A Quiet Place puts some fresh blood into the horror genre. It's very inventive, and the concept is really cool and a lot of fun to explore. The film itself teeters between horror and adventure, and you can definitely see a little bit of Executive Producer Michael Bay's touches in the film, but they make it fun more than bog the action down. A Quiet Place is a lot like if someone took the kitchen scene with the velociraptors in Jurassic Park and made a whole movie out of that one concept. Overall, this is a lot of fun, and I definitely recommend it! Expand

The children behavior might be something that isn't always consistent...but then you know this is on a long period of time. And children and young adults aren't always consistent with their emotions and decisions. In that sens, the film is logical. The ending is a mix of positive and negative. I give it a 85% easy. This movie is an instant classic and will stay as a reference for many good reasons. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Of course not a flawless movie, but a movie absolutely worth watching. I never thought I'd be able to be so invested in characters I knew so little about. You never even get told anyones name, but you develop a liking for everyone. The quietness of the movie makes it much easier for the scares to get you it is also a very suspenseful film. I love all the little details about how they avoid making noise with things like the board game that they knit their own pieces out of yarn to not make noise when they move them on the board or a yarn little spot to throw the dice on and the sand that they walk on barefoot to avoid making a lot of noise it's wonderful. There's some plot holes like why the hell you'd have a baby in this situation, but whatever. They had a plan for it that ends up working. This movie is also able to pull at your heart strings with the fathers death, the whole movie the death daughter feels distanced and feels like her parents blame her for her youngest brothers death(even though it was her fault kinda) there is even a scene where the boy tells his father he should tell her he loves her more, but as one of the monsters is near he attempts to protect them with an axe, but is swiped away by the monster, the boy screams for his father which sets off the monster in his direction, they hide in a truck as the monster is trying to get inside the father makes his way up to his feet and drops the axe on the ground. The monster looks in his direction uncertain of what to do, his death daughter looks at him through the windshield as he signs to her "I love you. I always loved you." afterwards he lets out a scream that causes the monster to go for him this time killing him. That scene, brought me so close to tears about the death of a character that I knew so little about because I had seen how much his children meant to him, I was seeing the lengths he was willing to go to for their safety and the emotion as he signed to her was just so real. I absolutely loved this movie, but it has its flaws. 8/10. Expand

John Krasinski (The Office) directed and stars with his real wife Emily Blunt as a married couple with kids. They have to live a near quiet existence because making ANY noise can be a matter of life and death. A Quiet Place is a taught drama/thriller that uses virtual silence to slowly build tension. With the artful and clever concept of little to no dialogue, the film keeps the audience engaged and too scared to make a sound themselves (you don't even wan to munch on your popcorn) Yes, as with many thrillers, there are a few plot holes, but the plot is unique, the acting is good and suspense is palpable. An incredibly detailed story that focuses on family relations. You may think you have a plot hole in the movie, but read the newspapers and remember the days! They list every reason why your "plot hole" is wrong. What may be bad about the movie is the massive amount of unnecessary jump scares, but it adds to the theme of A Quiet Place. Other than fabulous acting by the Millicent Simmonds, the best thing about the movie is sound direction. Each character has their own version of hearing everything and every time the camera moves to them, you will hear what they hear. You know each character's roles and how they feel in every situation. There is a screen which shows a death and a suicide, which may deter you and probably the only confusing part of the movie (anyone may comment on it here if they have a better explanation) - the only value it would add is the importance of family and how losing your loved ones can effect you. The conclusion was very well though-out because it was a random chance, not something scientifically articulated.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's a pretty good movie if you watch it in a theater, mostly for the good acting. There are some silly moments like silent baby birth, and pointless death of the father given how simple and close he was to figuring out how to kill those creatures, so it's hard to believe he didn't come up with what to do and only his daughter was able to. Creatures themselves are not scary, you will see similar ones in thousand other thriller / allien movies. But what i was most disappointed with is when they cut the movie at its peak, at its culmination and at the most interesting moment right before the major fight of the whole movie. Who does that? Bummer ... Otherwise, worth to watch compared to how much crap is produced nowadays. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This film takes place in a present day where earth has been taken over by aliens that can only hunt by sound. The film centres around a family trying to survive in a very unnatural environment, rather than showing the whole world going into chaos, we only see the family and one old man that has been overcome by the silence. This eerie effect that they may be the only humans left on earth along with a constant silence shows that silence in horror can be just as effective as loud jump scares. Expand

Notably, one of the best horror films of 2018.

The amount of dread and fright in this movie is subtle. I remember the condition of the theater house when I watched this film, surprisingly the environment is as quiet as the movie itself because you are anxious of what will happen something terrifying or frightening out of the film. This movie had made me jump or scare out of myself because of its sudden or unexpected scares.

The cast performance is great and their commitment in the movie of being silent as part of their roles is just astounding. Overall, this horror flick is an enjoyable and memorable treat.

Take notes, you so-called horror film writers and directors. The primary requirement for a horror movie to be good is to be thrilling and being intense. Not just cheap scares or silence followed by an incomprehensibly loud noise. .
.
Good : "A Quiet Place" directed by John Krasinski is a genuine and tensed horror/thriller. It has a unique premise and backstory. The setup for the story has been done well. The performances by John Krasinski and Emily Blunt, along with the child actors is awesome. The direction of Krasinski is "awesomer". The tension and the thrills were genuinely great. That's something I have not seen in a horror/thriller for a long time. Speaking of horror, what we take as "scary" is totally subjective. If you're watching this to get some jumpscares or to see a ghost, this ain't your movie. There are many moments that give us the feeling of getting into the jaws of death, unexpectedly. Those were some real thrills. And, the characters know what's gonna kill them and why. So, whenever such things take place, the tension is amplified (no pun intended) and whether or not they are gonna succeed at the particular moment keeps you terrified. For me, anything that keeps you terrified is real horror than some ghosts and jumpscares, so I got my "horror" part in this movie, after a long time. It's not that it doesn't have any false scares, just one or two though. Whenever something goes wrong, you can feel the s**t happening. That's some incredible directing. .
.
Mixed : The final moments were a bit less satisfying for a thrill ride we witnessed for the majority of the movie. There are some notable plot holes regarding some sounds making no significance in the context of the movie's own rules, the way a lot of food, medicines don't get used up after such a long time, the crops being harvested (without any noise?) etc. The movie also shows certain stuff as if it was trying to say "see this is a plot device, see see SEE!" and it actually is so. .
.
Bad : One plotline with Emily Blunt and her "youngest child" was something that made no sense to be honest as per the movie's own rules and was obvious to play out in the later part of the movie. The way it was playing out was damn good, but we knew that something was up regarding this. .
.
Conclusion : I cannot overlook the flaws but man, I had a great time watching the movie. It's flawed but intriguing. It's probably the first Krasinski movie (directorial) I liked so much. .

Its even disorientating at times but that only adds to the intended sense of being on high alert, as it were. Its interesting how certain sounds are noticed because of the lack of dialogue - something that might really bother, or bore even, some people but I liked the concept as something a little different, although I imagine its been done before in older films. I felt that Millicent Simmonds gave a particularly good performance, as the teen daughter Regan. She shows her fears and worries through her facial expressions well. This film won't appeal to all, its maybe not amazing or especially memorable as such but its certainly good and so, for what it is, I thought it was a well made film, hence I would recommend it, yes. The premise of theJohn Krasinski took a break from his comedic roles to direct the horror film, A Quiet Place. Starring alongside his wife, Emily Blunt, the movie marked a departure from his usual style and a foray into the horror genre. The premise of the movie, set in a post-apocalyptic 2020 where the world has been overrun by monsters that hunt by sound, is not entirely original but it is executed extremely well. The Abbott family, Lee (Krasinski), Evelyn (Blunt), Regan (Simmonds), Marcus (Jupe) and Beau (Cade Woodward) must use sign language to communicate and with one of them being deaf, it becomes second nature. The family must stick together after a tragic accident causes their numbers to shorten, but with a newborn on the way, things won’t be easy. The use of sound is a major factor in the success of the movie, with silence and musical cues being used sparingly and cleverly. The small cast all perform confidently, with Millicent Simmonds being cast in part because of her being deaf to add authenticity. The movie is creepy and at times, seat-grippingly so, with moments that don’t require sound or dialogue to elevate them. The movie had a snappy 90-minute runtime and was a bucketload of fun, but there were moments that didn't entirely work for the reviewer, such as the undercooked subplot of giving birth, and the conclusion was good but not as satisfying as the reviewer had hoped.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well directed and intense if you can buy into the rules of the movie. However, it unravels much in the way Signs did, which is a very similar movie, at the end regarding the creatures weakness. As a viewer we are expected to suspend disbelief that the whole world (and the world's militaries) are so stupid that they got overrun by aliens who can simply be destroyed by amplified higher frequency sound? Really? Realistically if this happened, the solution would have been found within 24 hours after observing the creatures are highly sensitive to sound and the military would have been able to target and destroy this foreign enemy with ease. Just saying it really drove down the score. It's hard to ignore and definitely takes me out of the world building realism the film tried to establish. Very high marks for most everything else though. Great acting, technical film aspects, pacing, tension, direction etc. Expand

With most of the Worlds population having been killed by creatures, of an unknown origin, that hunt using sound the Abbott family have found refuge on a small farm but must still be wary of making any noise.

After a shocking prologue I found the A Quiet Place rather slow going for the first half hour or so. The excellent cast, including the always reliable Emily Blunt, always keep things watchable however and as proceedings ramp up in the second half of the movie the original premise leads to some really tense, dramatic and emotional scenes. One for those who don't mind their horror movies on the slower side.

The suspense that is built just by use of silence alone is amazingly well done. And Kraskinski does a great job in his first real directing role. The story is where things start to fall apart here as literally nothing is explained about the world and why things are happening. Also the big "reveal" at the end of the movie losses alot of its impact for anyone who's ever read a Venom comic or saw the old Spiderman cartoon show. Alot of what kept me interested in watching the movie was the great sound direction and the superb acting by Kraskinski and his wife, Emily Blunt. Even if there are only about a paragraphs worth of lines spoken in the movie, they do alot to keep the viewer emotionally invested. I just wish the story wasn't as dull as it was and had a little bit more content to it. I'd still recommend the movie anyone who is interested in a suspenseful thriller but I don't think it lived up to the lofty reviews that everyone seems to spout when they talk about this. Expand

It is entertaining but here's basically nothing to this movie. It's like the popcorn at the theater. This movie is a series of suspense scenes with no real development. As the trailers show, aliens have invaded Earth and they are drawn to sound. So long as you're quiet you're safe. So this movie is about a family's efforts to remain quiet, and when you have kids that's not easy. That's it. The suspense scenes are entertaining, but they are all you get. You never find out a single thing about the aliens. You never find out a single thing about anything. The way the movie ends is cute but it's not the result of development. It's a shortcut ending that the story has not naturally built to at all. Bottom line. Fun but light and ultimately empty. Expand

I just wasn't particularly wowed by anything else here though. The premise, while executed well here, is nothing particularly novel (we've seen similar premises in films like "Don't Breathe" and "Hush"). And though the filmmaking here is undoubtedly effective, some of the usual horror movie pitfalls -- like an over-reliance on jump scares, for instance -- make an appearance. Again, I much enjoyed the film overall. It just didn't reinvent the wheel for me. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pros: - Nice and unique idea - to live without sound - Emily Blunt is great actress, acting at all, of all actors in this move is good - Daughter-actress is deaf in real life - this was strong and noble act by director

Cons: numerous plot holes, NUMEROUS - First of all - who in such place and such time ever so stupid to give birth to children? Worst place imaginable. No condoms or? Beyond stupid - Why in the world they have so many light devices but only one firework to distract creatures out? Seriously, some air horns away from home? No? But more lamps for sure!

Well, I understand those terrible plot holes had to be here to make a movie as it is. In other time I would give it 2 or 3 out of 10, but now I give it 7 due to pros. Can I recommend it? I'm not sure, prolly not though.

In this short little movie, you linger on a family of four’s attempts to stay mute so three carnivorous noise-hungry creatures in the area can’t find them.

You never get a good glance at the eyeless creatures other than some scary venom teeth and the fact that they crawl on all four like spiders. Thus, in the silence that these creatures scare the public into, anything that is heard simply BOOMs, almost a jump-scare in impact. Yet mom and dad still manage to find A Quiet Place where they can dance to earbud music together while he caresses her baby bump, allowing a brief piece of safe familiarity.

The hush living quarters the family lives in makes even paper ruffles more fearsome inside each of their individual perspectives: I likewise felt afraid to move even slightly in my theater seat while watching. The details that make up the family’s predicament screams mastery: food must be eaten off corn leaf plates and monopoly must be played using wool pieces, numerous scattered foreshadowing bits toy around your fearful anticipation in the process. It helps you to feel relieved once free speech is safely permitted around a thunderous waterfall, until you are set back in dangerous floods again set to attack.

Although the pregnant mother’s due date lands one day before a full moon, one of her first seen actions still conveys devotion in how she very carefully obtains her son’s meds, her ultimate realization of persistence’s importance sparking the evocative parental themes. The kids demonstrate themselves in persistence too, meeting us where we’re most sensitive, for we’ve all been a confused kid in a dark monstrous world before.

The father shows marriage’s power beyond personal dilemma whilst he searches after a cure for his daughter’s deafness, the constant dissatisfaction visualized with hot solar rays behind them in tension. Besides just casting his real-life wife, director John Krasinski (Lip Sync Battle) cast a deaf actress to portray the deaf daughter, resulting in authenticity of a seldom seen predicament: a deaf girl raised by hearing people who hope to change her. Alongside her brother, each eventually ascertain one another’s needs in the process of expressing a sibling’s commitment.

Thus, everyone has something different to zip behind secretive lips until you just want to throw a comforting wool blanket around each of them and sing a lullaby for their sanity. It makes you reconsider your own personal preconceptions upon communication to understand their unique intense love.

In pasting this complex piece together, John Krasinski’s efforts as director, star, co-writer, and co-executive producer each succeed to deafening applause! His on-screen performance stands out the most of his four efforts as a lack of a home glows in his softly paced eye motions. In the rare occasion he does speak, Krasinski breathes out a caressive necessity to desperately guard others. You often wonder when he’ll fall on his knees in self-ransom, fitting his final epiphany about the value in life or death.

However, not everything about Krasinski’s breakout project is perfect: the accompanying musical score contributes nothing for a film attempting no noise. The absence of music worked in No Country for Old Men, so think how much stronger it could turn out here! Plus, without fault on the producers’ affordability, cinematographer Charlotte Bruus Christensen (Fences, Molly’s Game) creates too few claustrophobic closeups on these victims. A similar issue to exploit a limited financial plan results in poor CGI monsters.

But like Get Out, a low-budget Black nightmare, A Quiet Place is a low-budget White nightmare. A ghost town appropriately opens the piece, streets beneath amber leaves, buzzards inaudibly swooping above, straightaway establishing a setup of Whiteness comeuppance. Whiteness in this future may be the world’s sole race left, any attention erased toward the natives they took America away from. Thus, the 100% Caucasian cast must keep below a whisper—or else face immediate death by their childhood fears, until a hard truth hits that nobody truly owns the Earth.

Obviously though, you will most remember the nonstop thrills, which pile on top of each other until the information built up erupts into a powerful finale. Thank goodness that it’s still rather early into the year, and we already got an explosive instant classic to scream about!

Expand

A room with more than 100 seats and only 4 other people in there with me and most importantly all them in complete silence.

Speaking about the film I think the noise and hype that is causing is somewhat excessive but I must give credit to John Krasinski for being his first film as a director because he delivers a solid film of horror and suspense that even though makes some argumentative mistakes like bringing a baby to the world when the world is now a **** up place, its narrative method works very well especially to immerse you inside the story and get people to pay full attention. After all if they don't have words they have the images and that is enough for this film.

Quite commendable because thanks to its way of telling its story it reminds the public how a movie should be enjoyed: In complete silence.

This is for a variety of reasons. I find most horror movies to have paper thin premises, unbelievable characters, and cheap thrills which don’t have lasting psychological impact. A Quiet Place unfortunately does not break any of these tropes. It is, however, an undeniably well-crafted film that comes extremely close.

The best part of the movie is its novel premise. The premise mostly works, but underneath, it does not get much deeper. There’s little to no subtext, few themes, and it becomes tiring by the end of the film’s brief runtime. It’s like a theme park ride. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. But it doesn’t stick with you. I saw the film with friends and went out to dinner afterwards. About 30 mins into dinner we started talking about the movie, which is when I realized I completely forgot I saw it even though we left the theater maybe 45 minutes earlier. There are memorable images, yes, but little else of the film “stays with you.” It’s upsetting, but not disturbing. Scary, but not horrifying. Thrilling, but not invigorating. The characters, especially the daughter, act irrationally for little reason besides plot convenience. I have good suspension of disbelief, but I was rolling my eyes by the end of the movie, as the “rules” of the film and the monsters were eventually thrown to the wayside and constantly contradicting themselves. The rules are the most important part of a horror/thriller, but they all end up being mostly forgotten if not directly broken. Where this creates an opportunity for subversion, instead it becomes apparent the film is just messy. An unforgettable first half-hour begins to unwind, and especially by the end, you realize the film is like puzzle pieces strewn about the floor without being put together for a greater purpose.

John Krasinski is obviously talented as a filmmaker, and I’m excited to see what he creates next. But he is also still a novice, and this is made clear. The film feels like it is in a hurry. Even the best, most disturbing and emotionally resonant scenes aren’t allowed to truly breathe and sink in before we are rushed to the next set piece. This makes for a breezy, brisk experience but one which never truly unsettles you. As a result, the impact is strong, but not lasting (if that makes sense). Again, there are few themes. The film isn’t really “about” anything at all. The characters are well-acted and while their motivations are clear, they aren’t believable. The emotional core of the film is the daughter’s struggle to accept her father’s love. She thinks he doesn’t love her, which is weird because at no point in the film does he ever demonstrate that he doesn’t love her unconditionally. In fact, he frequently goes out of his way to show her this. But she rejects it again and again. Why? I don’t know. Because she’s mad at him I guess. Why? Because he asks her to help out her mom one time. This is what I mean when I say the characters aren’t deep. Any further exploration reveals that they don’t really have a lot to say, and their feelings are mostly convenient for cheap storytelling.

While the premise is great, any scrutiny causes it to fall apart. That all being said, nobody asked Krasinski to make a masterpiece. It’s a fun popcorn movie, no more and no less. It’s a fast watch, and while I still contend that it doesn’t have lasting impact, the impact in the moment is still fun. What I’m trying to say is the screenplay is weak but everything else is handled mostly admirably. And who doesn’t love original blockbusters? Overall, I think most people would enjoy this film. Just don’t expect it to be a masterpiece, because it’s not. It is however pretty decent and miles better than most of the other horror movie dreck in theaters these days. I have a feeling Krasinski’s next film is going to be significantly better. He shows a lot of promise, but it’s definitely still at the beginning. Go buy a ticket to encourage him to make more movies, and to encourage studios to pick up original works.

Like so many things in life no matter what it is there will be almost always equal amounts that like it or hate it and some just say *MEH*..it's when you see large skews toward of one these that you take notice (one of the signs that "Last Jedi" was gonna be disappointing for me..critics gave all 10s..fanbois gave it 0s)

..so when I see nearly 50 critics give QUIET PLACE universal love (they had reviewed it before general release) I thought "Wow! this most be something"..one even gave it to highest praise for me and compared it to ALIENS (prolly my fave monster flick of all time)

To be fair QUIET PLACE is a GOOD flick..especially when one realizes it was made on shoestring budget..BUT it is hardly in the league as ALIENS

Opening sequence (prologue?..before title) was great at setting mood and tone..and the packed theatre I saw it with actually APPLAUDED it like a stage show

..BUT rest of movie was VERY VERY slow in unfolding..so much that even I was like "OK, lets move this along"..at 90 minutes it's not a long movie..but it sure felt like one to me..one guy actually got up half way thru and left and before he did he yelled back into the silent theatre "THIS MOVIE SUX!" to the cheers & boos of the others..truthfully, I kinda agreed with him at the time. The movie does eventually get to action..but the whole time I am also thinking..Jeez, what if this WAS real? How would I go about protecting myself and fighting these things. ON several levels these guys seemed kinda dumbasses on how they went about it..Jeez! why don't you do THIS?!..why did you do THAT?!
..altho I guess we wouldn't have much of a movie if I was calling shots

again not bad movie..actually a good one..just not the AMAZING near perfect score of 97 that this film had BEFORE wide release

If you are a parent you can't watch this and not identify with these parents. It kept me on the edge of my seat. All that being said there were some obvious plot holes. The score seemed intrusive rather than helping the story along. It is true there is no "story line" to really follow. It is simply about these people trying to survive. Rather than hurting the movie I felt it made it more honest. That is what life would be like if this were to happen. There could have been more about how the world came to be this way but a creative imagination fills in the hole there without too much effort. This was definitely a movie to be seen and experienced in a theater surrounded by people. Expand

From the first scene to the end there is not a single moment of relief. While billed as a horror/suspense thriller, this film to me was more a story about family. While I can't delve into this more specifically without spoilers, I can say many of the decisions and events that unfold are due to the relationship dynamics between the parents and kids. This movie, while basic in it's plot, is a grand story of survival and perseverance. Every sound, no matter how loud, causes you to hold your breath throughout the duration of the film. While many criticized the fact that there was never an explicit explanation for how the monsters came, I thought this lack of explanation made the monsters more mysterious and more frightening. As someone who is often critical of movie monsters, I really liked the design of these creatures as they seemed relatively natural while being perfect killing machines. There are plenty of little things throughout the movie, if you're lucky enough to see them, that either add to their mystery or perhaps answer some questions you may have about them. The acting is all around very well done, which may be an understatement as I may not have a good comparison for acting without dialogue. My biggest problem with this movie is the way it ended. While I have no problem with the events that took place, I wish they hadn't stopped the movie when they did. I also thought there were some decisions made by the characters that were just bad or unnecessary, yet unfortunately I can't delve into this without revealing spoilers.
Overall this is a tremendous movie that I would highly recommend.
