7500 was recently released on Amazon Prime. I watched it. Here are my thoughts.

7500 is a thriller about a plane flying from Berlin to Paris that gets hijacked by some Islamist terrorists. If you haven’t rolled your eyes already, then you should be good watching this.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars as the young co-pilot on the flight who has to fight the hijackers and get the passengers to safety. The film is directed by Patrick Vollrath who co-wrote the script with Senad Halilbasic. As you can tell by the short synopsis, the script isn’t very important. This film is all mood and tension. It does that really well. When characters are actually talking, it is more cliched and less successful. Gordon-Levitt acts out panic well and he summons that adrenaline-fueled bravery that is needed in this situation. Since he spends most of the screen time alone, his ability to convey a sense of dread is important. It is impossible not to feel that.

This setting in 7500 helps keep the tension high. The majority of the film takes place in the cockpit. Gordon-Levitt’s character can only see what’s happening in the rest of the plane from the security camera in the cockpit. The helplessness adds to that sense of dread. The good editing and the runtime of 7500 being less than 90 minutes makes it feel even more urgent. Realistically though, why was this movie about Islamist terrorists hijacking a plane being made and released now? It feels like it is 10 years or so late, and the story of the hijacker and the hijacked has not evolved any sense even those same movies from the 1990’s. 7500 doesn’t bring anything new to this story.

If you have less than 90 minutes to spend, 7500 isn’t a bad way to spend it. It is very tense and it flies by in a clip. There is nothing new about the story, but Joseph Gordon-Levitt give a good performance. A handful of popcorn will do.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For a film with such a short runtime, there is a hell of a lot of filler here. Just because people are shouting, does not mean tension is being developed. Every scene just lingers a bit too long...and then the film just ends. Abruptly and unsatisfyingly. Joseph Gordon-Levitt provides a satisfactory performance here with the material he has been given (some of the dialogue is particularly bad), but the rest of the cast feels weak and cliché: the one terrorist who has a change of heart and the hero tries to win over, only to die in the end. Captain Phillips did this style of film significantly better, and I recommend you watch that instead. Expand

Also the imbalance between the elements of suspense and drama, not only make it unconvincing, they make it look constructed in a very convenient way in order to make it more functional and that's why the film never manages to go for everything, especially because it never seems to be sure of the path in which it should step on the accelerator.

Negative comments of "7500" come in the guise of feigned political correctness and personal dislike of pace (ridiculous) or action in that there is too much screaming and banging on the door - I guess the reality would be that one should politely ask that the cockpit door be opened (and not insist at that), and that the infliction of wounds should be accompanied by "I strongly object that you stab me with the glass knife", but only once and in the quieten voice. True connoisseurs of action movies will like "7500". Expand

This movie was a super intense ride, I've no idea why it's rated so low. The sound in particular really makes you feel like you're in that cockpit.

Not epic, no setpieces, no special effects and pretty predictable... But as a kind of cinematic exeperiment put exclusively into an airplane cockpit it kept me thrilled for its 90 minutes - and that's pretty much what I wanted.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays a pilot, whose flight from Berlin to Paris is hijacked. After the initial attack, he's trapped inside the cockpit, while trying to cope with the threat in the cabin. Along with Patrick Vollrath's claustrophobic direction, Gordon-Levitt manages to maintain moderate anxiety with his intense yet controlled performance. The tension isn't always as compelling as it could be and the final few minutes drag down the drama and dilute the film's full effect. Still, it's a frightening scenario effectively realized with Gordon-Levitt's solid performance. Expand

Color me stunned, because I've seen a lot of what the man's capable of ("50/50," "(500) Days Of Summer," "Don Jon," etc.) and I'd still say this performance probably cracks the top three for me. However, what stunned me most about the film was writer/director Patrick Vollrath's (in his feature debut) commitment to an uncompromising vision for the world we all inhabit. This is an implacably dark, at times brutal watch, featuring some real choice words on justice, vengeance and the never-ending tug of war between the East and the West. Some may be deterred by its iciness, but I personally found this movie's thematic content to be almost achingly apt. Solid work overall. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. "7000" of Patrick Vollrath in his debut fits into the vein of "Locke" (Knight, 2013), "Beast of Burden" (Ganslandt, 2018), "The Guilty" (Möller, 2018): propagandized as an elegant exercise of style in the footsteps of the most claustrophobic Hitchcock, instead it is an attempt to minimize production costs (this time 5 million dollars) by employing a single location and little more than just one actor, a monologuing one-man show for about an hour and a half. The absolute void with autopilot, "all in all is just another crap in the wall".

This is a really good movie, if it was released 10 years ago it may have been an Oscar winner. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is awesome and the rest of the cast is fantastic as well. Well shot and well done.

Screenwriter/Director Vollrath Scores in 1st Film
"7500" develops anticipation and builds tension from the opening frames, simulating authentic security camera footage of terrorists getting through airport security, and onto a German airline passenger jet headed to Paris. Once aboard the plane, Vollrath uses a real-time linear scene structure (similar to Mendes' "1917") from the viewpoint of the cockpit and the American co-pilot played with understated perfection by Gorden-Levitt. The film takes hold of the viewer and doesn't let go - the entire film plays like a reenactment of actual events (this is fictional). A fantastic 1st film effort by German Screenwriter/Director Patrick Vollrath.
