I thought this movie succeeded on a Homeric Epic level; something not to be taken literally, but grandiose in its fantastical description.

The major error of the film is the portrayal of the Persians. There were in no way as monstrous or demonic as they were portrayed here. It shouldn't hold you back from liking the movie but people should be reminded that the Persian empire was is no way any less heroic than the Hellenistic and that the Hellens were in no way and less barbaric than the Persians at times. It's just a beautifully done film, and while it's definitely not family fair, anyone up for an intense film will love this movie. The only way I can see this movie getting a bad review is if someone doesn't "get it." I've seen reviews where people didn't like it because it wasn't "realistic enough." Guys, it's not supposed to be!! It's supposed to have an ethereal quality too it, and it's a stronger movie for it. It exagerates in a lot repects but in a dramatic way, an artistic way. Those people who think I am Greek so I care for one thing a faithful representation of the Spartan Spirit. This movie will make you believe that it was made by a Spartan. It exagerates in a lot repects but in a dramatic way, an artistic way. Those people who think that there is a lot of violenece , sex and corny dialogue then obviously do not read history and do not understand it. This is Sparta and this is Ancient Greece. Greek Culture is based on the belief in Human Spirit. We are pasionate people and ancient greek were even more passionate. They had to be as Ancient Greece were surrounded by enemies. But this movie appeals to non-Greek as well since is all about Strength and Honour which can be found in every nation. I have to agree that visual effects are that impressive. This movie is not based so much in 3d effect but on color and photography . Afterall this is no Lord of the Ring but a historical event. Music is excellent eventhough not as unique as you may have heard in the trailer Acting is really very good. Only one actor is very well known but the rest just do the job.But you can see that most credit goes to director which made a Spartan , which means straight to the point. The movie as I said is largely based on historical facts even things that may seem exagerations did really happen. That is the position of spartan women, the toughness of Spartan as soldier, the military education of the boys, etc. Of course there are things that differ. Like leonidas looks like 30 years old eventhough he was 50, diffirent helmets and body armor etc. But the purpose is to motivate and bring back Sparta ideals and it does that exactly . This is not a mere pop-corn movie. This is Human faith. This is Sparta. Expand

Even with all of the cool ways there were to be stabbed and sliced, I found myself completely bored after the second major battle waiting for anything to surprise me or make me want to give a damn about any of the characters. Even with the stylized CGI and obvious painstaking attempts at detail, it just seemed dull and devoid of any soul. I guess people equate good acting with shouting and nowadays as well. There were redeeming parts of the movie but they were few and far between which is terribly disappointing as I realloy wanted to like this movie. By the end of it, I was rooting for the Persians to win. At least then I wouldn't have to listen to Leonidas' and his wife's pale and two-dimensional defenses of "freedom" (freedom to what, by the way? Be ruled by kings and prophets? To be forced into the brutal life of a warrior? To have your newborn child thrown off a cliff if deformity is suspected?). The battles were mostly dull, not due to lack of interesting cinematography, which I will credit the movie for, but because the movie never gives us a compelling reason to be concerned for the safety of the Spartans, who are portrayed as a nearly-invincible fighting force throughout most of the movie. And who can root for or sympathize with an invincible fighting force? Looks alone are not enough to save this dud. Even if it were stripped of any possible political or racial overtones (an army of white men vs. an army of people with darker skin, homosexuals, and the disabled? Ahem.), 300 is still a waste. The Battle of Thermopylae could have been the centerpiece of a better film which explored Spartan society or the Greek/Persian wars and which took the time the flesh out its characters, their flaws and all. Instead, we have a film that is almost entirely about the battle and military tactics, and thus I couldn't care less about the fate of the Spartans. Expand

Have we grown so jaded that even true stories about honor and glory can be laughed at? Yes, I know that this was not an historically true telling of Thermopylae. Everyone involved with "300", including Frank Miller himself, knew that. But the *spirit* of the graphic novel and the movie are true to history. And no amount of window dressing, irony, or sarcasm can change the fact that, in the year 480 B.C., less than 1000 Greek soldiers died defending their homeland from an invasion force that numbered in the hundreds of thousands. This movie showed the dedication and strength it took for that to even be possible. Expand

Not to mention people saying the corniest one liners and that's it, just one line and then nothing for minutes on end. Seems to be more of a propaganda piece to just dehumanize Persians (think Iranians) and make them look like savages. Neither side was innocent, and they're both godless and brutal societies. (The last line about ushering in a new age of "free thought" and an end to mysticism is a real kicker, since the Greeks believed in their own made up religion.) It really bothered me how historically inaccurate it was. I can forgive certain exaggerations and changes for the sake of movie making, but this is blasphemy, this is madness. I did enjoy all the Spartan quips and quotes they worked into the dialogue, as did the audience who laughed at each one. All the actors excelled at their roles, especially considering it was all filmed against a green screen. Gerard Butler was perfect as King Leonidas. Rodrigo Santoro as Xerxes was very imposing as well. The thing that really hurts 300 is that it can't decide if it wants to be a historical epic, comic book or video game, so it blends all three genres together with mixed results. But all in all, it should be seen. If for no other reason than to remember the epic battle and those who gave their lives to save western philosophy, rhetoric and democracy. Expand

We've seen this movie before and done much more effectively in Gladiator, Braveheart, etc. 300 makes a great trailer but not much else. Also, the visuals aren't that impressive. Aside from a handful of stunning images that are in the trailer the movie is actually quite dull and grainy looking. The entire time I was aware that the images were computer generated, making it difficult to care or believe in the action. Don't believe the hype. Expand

Unfortunately, this stylistic gambit makes war look like interpretive dance; something Debbie Allen might've cooked up for the 1994 Academy Awards ceremony. King Leonidas(Gerald Butler) really likes Sparta. You can tell because he shouts a lot. This! Is! Not! A! Good! Movie! There's too many arrows; too many ships; too many soldiers; all thanks to CGI, which makes a seemingly infinite number of objects look artificial and flat. And where did they cast the 300 soldiers? At a bodybuilding convention? Sometimes these Herculean men seem to be in the midst of a calendar shoot. Go! Rent! "Gladiator"! Expand

All the characters are one-notes at best with Leonidas being especially tiresome as almost every other line of dialogue is trite, cliche, and yelled at you. This battle cry delivery becomes the sole method of conveying both the drama of the moment and the persistent theme of the movie, that Spartans are badasses. Am I supposed to sympathize with this ancient clan of fascists? Twenty minutes into it I already felt numb with the realization that I simply did not care what happened to the characters on the screen. The only thing I kept asking myself was why McNulty agreed to do this. Expand

Much of the side drama feelings like a side drama, leaving the target audience craving even more of its ultraviolent ancient warfare. It is a bloody and lewd picture, absolutely not for the kids, but for people desensitized enough to accept a movie where most of the warriors aren't treated as people, and by the body count alone, life has very little meaning until it is gone, if then. It is funny that its few bare breasts and short erotic sequences receive more protest than the various dismemberments, but be prepared for both, and be prepared to enjoy them, or don't see 300 at all. This is not a profound movie, often stopping short where it might examine greater morality or elevate the plot. Instead, its best dramatic feature is how it makes you believe things will happen when you walked into the movie theatre knowing they couldn't. If you rate this as a high drama, you miss its point - it is a superb action movie and needs to be judged and enjoyed as such. With all its references to Greek and specifically Spartan patriotism, its bold moral values unshared by mainstream America, and a plot driven by Persian aggression on European soil, this movie is absolutely not an allegory for America's conflicts with the Middle East, and only the dimwitted could see this as supporting an American war with Iran. However if that does happen, many marines may use this to psych themselves up. Expand

I read one reviewer say the copper colors were overused, i thought it looked good. Sure, the movie exploits sex and violence (it is the goriest movie I have ever seen by a long shot) , but we are watching a war movie. Only gripe I had at first all the Spartans look like models, instead of barbarians, but I think it just added to the style. I think some critics forget to enjoy a movie for what it is. Amazing movie. The action was relentless and the editing team made amazing use of slow motion. Certain parts were slowed down and sped up to emphasize the impact of certain strikes. The acting was amazing, as was the characters' interaction with the environment. Through the use of digital editing, the entire movie was made on a digital set - the only actual on location filming the crew did was for a horse action shot. The only qualm I had with the movie was its insertion of "freedom and liberty prevailing over all else. I have read the comic several times (I now own it, too. Go Chapters!) and though the Spartans preached that a new age was beginning, an age of "great deeds, reason, and justice," the comics never referenced freedom and liberty. It sort of left an "American" taste in my mouth. Expand
