If you look at it historically, if you look at it from having read the original graphic series, if you look at it from simple film-making. I came into the theatre *thrilled* to be there -- shelled out the extra money for IMAX, even. I love the original story of the Spartans, I loved Sin City (same writer and director pair as 300) -- how could it lose? I was so completely disappointed with this. Crazy-stupid mutants, for no reason. Ridiculous lines thrown in, like Miller is trying to enter current U.S. politics. What a waste. Expand

Sure, it might not have been historically accurate, but keep in mind that it is based on a GRAPHIC NOVEL (meaning, in a sense, a comic book.) You have to suspend disbelief for a few hours and just ENJOY the movie. 300 is the kind of movie that makes me want to be a better filmmaker. The cinematography of the film is gorgeous. The intensity of the film kept the entire theatre at the edge of their seats. The beginning is a little slow, as are most scenes that explain the exposition and background of a character. Other than that, the scenes were beautifully crafted so that there wasn't too much action without a storyline. Definately see this film in the theater if you can. Make your own judgment about it. There is a story, and there is a purpose, but it will be different for everyone. Expand

There is bloodshed, but that is unavoidable in a tale that pits 300 Spartans protecting their right to live as free men against a massive army of invading Persians. The bloodletting is not so much extreme as it is relevant and poetic and stylized. Zach Snyder has portrayed this battle - which includes skewered limbs and decapitations - with an artistic grace that removes the 'cringe' factor. The spattering blood is not overdone. It is relevant and understandable. It is elemental. I am a woman and I drank this movie in. 300 strips away all the nonsense that we are sometimes subjected to in story telling and gets to the basics. There is no foolish fluff in this movie. It is raw! Every word, move, action, look and sound is relevant. The soundtrack blends flawlessly. There is nothing to distract you from the pure beauty of the visuals and the unprocessed emotion portrayed. 300 is about strength and honor and courage and even love. I know Expand

is the film campy? yes and no; this is how we believe they would talk and look and feel. we all watched braveheart and thought, 'ya that's how they'd talk and act and live etc.' b/c we look at that time period as dark and unsophisticated. we look at the greeks at socialized and understandable and that's what we get. it is definitely a love or hate film, i don't think there is an in the middle with this one nor do i think you can blame someone for hating or loving it. its one of those films that you see and think one of two ways; 1. amazing, beautiful, epic or 2. gratuitous, spacious, pointless. and depending on what your expectations were is where you'll sit. a note to those that have not seen the film: expect a violent, fast paced and action driven film not a historical, slow, plot/dialogue drive piece.

There is a delineation between the two. 300 is not thought provoking or extraordinarily deep...but DAMN is it fun to watch! The cinematography was gorgeous and seamless and the fight scenes were very well choreographed. For those who complain about its historical accuracy...people...this movie was based on a graphic novelist's exaggeration of the original story. And to add to the people who complain that it's a "propaganda movie:" This was a historical event that took place 2000 some odd years ago, so to say that we are giving it modern attributions is borderline ridiculous. Also...300 vs. a metric ton of soldiers sounds more like the insurgency vs. the US rather than the other way around. That being said, I would highly recommend going to see this movie for its sheer entertainment value. If you go expecting to see a "Best Picture of the Year" movie then don't. If you go expecting to see eye candy in every sense of the word then absolutely go. Expand

But what hollywood movie/comic does? Galdiator did not follow the truth. If a movie were to follow the true story of anything, no one would watch it, at least the mass. This movie has a great mixture of art and the art of war. A very poetic movie based off a graphic novel. Along with the violence you have nudity, but not demeaning at all. To me this film reminded me of all the old ancient greek/roman statues we all see. Like Nike adjusting her sandles, the oracle dances in the nude with similar thin silky robes wrapped around her body. One thing that bugs me about the whole Sparta vs Persian debate is that people try to nit pick everything they see. Right now the Iranians are having an uproar because they think the "persians" in the movie depick them as what they used to be. First thing first. This movie does not say "america vs Iraq." This movie is about the 300 spartans that went to war with all of persia. Persia is not Iraq. Sure, they are in the same place...but Persia is dead. This is just a movie off of a Graphic Novel. The monsters in the movie are creative, they remind me of something you will see in a comic book. Anyways, enough of my rant. If you have not seen the movie yet because of the reviews on this site, then you are missing out on a great experience. I went into this movie not knowing anything really and came out excited and ready to see it again. 300 is a masterpiece. Expand

And people are complaining about it being historically inaccurate. Duh! Didn't you see the previews. This movie's about a certain style, not a history lesson. Having said that, the action was boring because most of it was in slow motion. It seemed like half the movie was in slow motion. I've also read that people say its really manly, but its dumb, meat-head manly. And I'm all for sex, but what's the deal with the awkward, pointless sex scene. And it was hard to get "inspired" by this movie (unless inspired means going to the gym, but still, I would rent "Pumping Iron.") It was a great film, I'm not sory at all I saw it. Many reviewers have stated the the film is hallow and lacks emotion or substance, and to some extent this is true. This is (suprisingly) not a movie you will be thinking about the next day for any reason other than the cenamatography. Its the first matrix film if you compleatly removed the plot. I'm assuming the critics were either a) having a bad day and needed to vent or b) watched the wrong movie, thinking it was 300. "300" is incredible. Everything from the acting, to the screenplay & cinematography was amazing. Not perfect, but very entertaining and visually stimulating the entire film. The visuals alone dictate a rating above "53" that the critics are giving it. Story wasn't the greatest, but as a whole, this movie is up there with "Gladiator" and "Braveheart". Better? I wouldn't dare go that far, but "300" is still a solid film from opening credits to the end. Fight scenes were intense and very realistic with a touch of CGI and cool camera effects to add some Miller-esque flavor to the mix. This movie makes me even more impressed with the Spartan warriors of their time. Simply amazing. Go see this film and be the judge yourself. I'm starting to doubt critics more and more often. Ok, ok - there was lots of "CG" blood - but where was the blood that "should have been there" ? There were stabbings, impalings, decaptations and more - blood was "flying around", but apparently it all evaporated !! None landed on anyone, on the ground, on the sheilds - no blood to be found anywhere ! Even the bodies of those killed with arrows lying on the ground there was no blood surrounding the punctures. Ok, so you may say that it was supposed to be "art" and not reality - fine - but for my tastes, it seems like a glaring omission of detail that would have made a bigger impact if they had actually left the blood in. Lastly - I have NO idea what was historically accurate versus what was made up - (and I don't really care) - but what struck me as odd was that why-oh-why, if you "had" hundreds of thousands of Spartans to send to battle, why would you only send 300 ?? If you were the King - just "do" it ! Why be a slaughtered lamb for nothing ?? This lack of logic is just as dumbfounding as that stupid Last Samurai movie, where they all went to battle for the sake of stupidity - and even after losing, life went on as it did before - (basically they fought and died for nothing). You would think that I did not like the movie from this review - but apart from the lack of "logical" blood and the fallacy of the slaughter of the 300 lambs - I thought the movie was thoroughly enjoyable. (Yes, I just said I thoroughly enjoyed it !) Expand
