This movie was awesome and it was exactly as it was supposed to be, an action packed war movie featuring large amounts of killing and blood.

Either they despised it for its stylized over-the-top-ness (which is only worthy of disdain if the filmmakers *weren't* trying make it that way), or they grudgingly acknowledged that beefcake and a loud soundtrack can make a fun movie. Have we grown so jaded that even true stories about honor and glory can be laughed at? Yes, I know that this was not an historically true telling of Thermopylae. Everyone involved with "300", including Frank Miller himself, knew that. But the *spirit* of the graphic novel and the movie are true to history. And no amount of window dressing, irony, or sarcasm can change the fact that, in the year 480 B.C., less than 1000 Greek soldiers died defending their homeland from an invasion force that numbered in the hundreds of thousands. This movie showed the dedication and strength it took for that to even be possible. Expand

Battles are not about dialogue and the Spartans were notoriously terse. The choreography and gritty, surreal CG made up for the simplistic plot line. Why expect anything but laconic wit (google it) and brutal violence from a movie about Sparta?!

Anyone with a quarter brain and an understanding of what this movie is, a movie version of a graphic novel, would understand that the imagery was simply meant to be a comic in motion, maintaining all the extremes of a great graphic novel. They think it's supposed to be completely true to life and fails. No. It's art in motion. This movie is incredible if you get past your ego and actually have a real taste for artistic expression. See it if you're one to enjoy new, fresh cinematic ideas ...instead of just chalking everything up to the same textbook formula that these so-called expert reviewers seem to do. Expand

And the enjoyment did not come from the story itself. The story was just an excellent excuse to have a visual blast on the big screen. It was just lovely to watch. Violence made aesthetic. Don't get me wrong. As fascistoid stories make good, brainless entertainment I don't think it should be practised outside the big screen. Maybe movies like this should warn potential moviegoers; "This movie, while inspired by historic events (that are blurry in detail and most likely exaggerated by its original tellers), should be viewed purely as enterainment and nothing more. Please do not use this as inspirational material in society." Expand

Everything from the acting, to the screenplay & cinematography was amazing. Not perfect, but very entertaining and visually stimulating the entire film. The visuals alone dictate a rating above "53" that the critics are giving it. Story wasn't the greatest, but as a whole, this movie is up there with "Gladiator" and "Braveheart". Better? I wouldn't dare go that far, but "300" is still a solid film from opening credits to the end. Fight scenes were intense and very realistic with a touch of CGI and cool camera effects to add some Miller-esque flavor to the mix. is the film campy? yes and no; this is how we believe they would talk and look and feel. we all watched braveheart and thought, 'ya that's how they'd talk and act and live etc.' b/c we look at that time period as dark and unsophisticated. we look at the greeks at socialized and understandable and that's what we get. it is definitely a love or hate film, i don't think there is an in the middle with this one nor do i think you can blame someone for hating or loving it. its one of those films that you see and think one of two ways; 1. amazing, beautiful, epic or 2. gratuitous, spacious, pointless. and depending on what your expectations were is where you'll sit. a note to those that have not seen the film: expect a violent, fast paced and action driven film not a historical, slow, plot/dialogue drive piece.

Inspired by a true story, 300, tells the story of King Leonadis who, bound by honour, leads his 300 man Spartan army against the seemingly endless Persian Horde attacking his homeland.

As with Sin City the movie remains faithful to Frank Millers graphic novel providing a truly fantastic spectacle as the Spartans face up to the unknown. The simple plot plays in the movies favour by allowing the focus to remain largely on the battle itself which is brilliantly directed and as good, if not better, than anything else in cinema history. As the movie progresses it is difficult not to side with Leonadis as they continue to fight against insurmountable odds and the two hours will simply fly by.

A true milestone for visuals in cinema that has still yet to be bettered.

The story was great, and the action scenes were just utterly fantastic and very well planned out. The script was a little basic, however the narrative feel to the movie and the overall hook of it being a story getting told to the mighty army of Sparta made this film really hit me!

Distilled to its essence, this is a graphic novel comeWhatever else 300 may be, it is destined to become beloved for a group of devotees. The size of that group will determine whether it achieves mainstream acceptance or attains cult status. Distilled to its essence, this is a graphic novel come to life - one of those rare instances in which filmmakers seek not merely to adapt a comic book but to interpret it for the screen. Both approaches are valid and have their strengths, but 300 would not be the experience it is had it not clung to the hyper-reality of the images of Frank Miller's graphic novel. From a visual standpoint, 300 (like Sin City before it) exists at a vertex where comic books and motion pictures intersect.

At its most basic, 300 is a retelling of the Battle of Thermopylae, which took place in 480 B.C. Although the particulars are clouded in legend, the facts are not in dispute: an inferior number of Spartan soldiers (generally accepted to be 300) under the command of King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) held out against a vastly superior Persian force (estimated to be anywhere between 200,000 and 2,000,000) led by King Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro). Although the Spartans did not win the battle, they dealt serious losses to the Persians which contributed to the defeat of Xerxes' forces a year later at the Battle of Plataea. For 300, director Zack Snyder, staying true to the graphic novel, emphasizes the mythology of the battle rather than seeking historical accuracy. The resulting texture is more like that of the Battle of Helms Deep in The Two Towers than something one might assume to be a closer kin, like the war scenes in Troy.

300 is about heroism in the face of insurmountable odds. It is a masterpiece of images, style, and testosterone. An ode to masculinity and machismo, it captivates the eye and gets the blood pumping. It is heroic spectacle at its finest. Expectedly, the movie lacks subtlety and ignores things like characterization. The few characters we come to know are types: The Great Warrior-King, The Strong Wife, The Treacherous Betrayer, The Dark Enemy. It should be acknowledged, however, that the thrust of the movie leaves little room for three-dimensional protagonists, and that's not what viewers are looking for anyway. They get what they come for: a rousing action/adventure tale that, once it gets rolling, rarely takes time to catch its breath. Knowing the fate of the Spartans doesn't diminish the bloody exhilaration of getting there.

Snyder has dug deep into his bag of tricks in order to make 300 into what it is. His approach is not unlike that of Sin City and Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow in that he uses color desaturation and blue screen background work to craft the film's otherworldly look. The film could just as easily be taking place in Middle Earth as in ancient Greece. The men are buff beyond belief, with bulging biceps and chiseled chests. The women (or at least the only woman that matters) are voluptuous. There are bare butts (from men) and unclothed breasts (from men and women). It's a cornucopia of flesh. The film also revels in gore, although not to the extent one might suppose. There are decapitations and splashes of blood, but nothing happens that could be described as especially shocking, gruesome, or gut-wrenching. The images recall not only the panels of Frank Miller from the graphic novel but the paintings of another Frank - Frank Frazetta, the fantasy illustrator who gained popularity with swords-and-sorcery fans by illustrating the iconic covers of various Conan books during the 1960s and 1970s.

The cast is populated by character actors - an effective approach because it makes it easier to lose sight of the actors than might be the case if they were readily identifiable. Gerard Butler, who plays Leonidas, is no screen neophyte. He has starred in big budget productions like The Phantom of the Opera and Tomb Raider II. But his visage is unremarkable and that makes him clay in the filmmakers' hands. His performance is larger than life, full of passion and vigor - just what the director ordered. Lena Headey plays Leonidas' queen, a woman of equal strength and passion (although the performance is more restrained). Like Butler, she is often seen on the big screen but rarely recognized. The cast is rounded out with names like Dominic West, David Wenham (as the narrator, Dilios), Vincent Regan, and Rodrigo Santoro as Xerxes. All are believable in this setting; none is immediately recognizable.

The pitch Snyder (Dawn of the Dead) used to secure financing is that 300 would change the way "sword and sandal" movies were made and viewed. To an extent, he is correct: 300 is unlike any movie to have previously reached the screen. Its larger-than-life characters, frenetic action sequences, lush visuals, and unabashed embrace of the over-the-top nature of comic books makes it something to be enjoyed in a way that is normally reserved for summer blockbusters.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm really glad I watched this movie after growing up. I learnt about this movie as a kid when I watched the Deadliest Warrior episode, Spartan vs Ninja. They told about how Spartans were made famous with 300, so I thought I should definitely give it a try. I didn't even start watching it as a kid, since I found it so boring in the first five minutes. And I'm glad that I did, because this movie has a lot of things the 10 year old me would have hated to see. And as an adult those very things are what I like to see in this.

Simple review: This movie is metal. Yeah, that's all I could say about it. The grim tone, the bleak colour palette, the narration going on in the background which made it sound so melodramatic, the whole depiction of Persia in itself, the amount of slow motion violence - all of this is too much to handle for simple audience. For someone like me who is a big fan of Zack Snyder's style of cinematography, this is fantastic. Such movies give the feeling of those grim looking paintings which I love to see and feel nostalgic.

The thing about this movie is, it's not relying on the storytelling. The story is absolutely simple - The Spartan king Leonidas refused to bow before Persia and even killed their messengers. So now Persia is coming to crush them with their 10000 soldiers and beasts. Leonidas fights them back by handpicking 300 of his men. That's it. This is the story. And now they fight, which is the epic part. Like I said, as a kid I'd have hated it, and that's exactly what I'm talking about - the Spartans are completely naked and wearing red capes while the Persian Immortals are wearing black, and the Spartans kill them. They also kill the animals like rhinos, elephants and horses. These are why I'd have hated this movie as a kid.

There are many other things that this movie showed that I'd have hated as a kid, and these reasons are the same as any other family audience (I mentioned the reasons which were only specific to me before). The sex scenes, the slow pacing, the handicapped man whom Leonidas didn't let fight (I forgot his name), Xerxes and his army's camp with a goat man and weird stuff happening (people may not hate it, they'll just not get it). In the end it's told that all of this was just a story to motivate the soldiers. This is the reason why the story was demonising the Persians and portraying the Spartans as the heroes.

The thing about Zack Snyder's movies is that you can really enjoy them if you rewatch them. Because then you'd already know the story and you can just focus on how cool everything is looking. It's a pity everyone I know whom I can recommend this movie has already watched it, but at the same time it makes me feel nice about how popular this movie is. It literally made Spartans into a pop culture icon. If Leonidas were to somehow come back and see how this movie has portrayed him, he'd be really proud.

It is implied in the graphic novel that the Spartan narrator has taken his own exaggerated and glorified perspective and brought it home to his comrades; the alleged lack of depth to this movie is merely a lack of critic's understanding of this simple notion. We see absurdity such as a rhino and mutants on screen because the Spartan storyteller is instructed to "Tell of victory" and he does so in the most monumental, epic way he can. Its truly pathetic to see that the critics actually believe that the director wasn't aware that mutants and rhinos weren't in the Battle of Thermopylae. I give this film an eight because I wanted to be attached to more than just Leonidas, his wife, and his captain - and wasn't allowed to because the film jumps rather quickly into the epic story. Beyond this, I found this film to be engaging, entertaining, and thoroughly enjoyable. Expand

Much of the side drama feelings like a side drama, leaving the target audience craving even more of its ultraviolent ancient warfare. It is a bloody and lewd picture, absolutely not for the kids, but for people desensitized enough to accept a movie where most of the warriors aren't treated as people, and by the body count alone, life has very little meaning until it is gone, if then. It is funny that its few bare breasts and short erotic sequences receive more protest than the various dismemberments, but be prepared for both, and be prepared to enjoy them, or don't see 300 at all. This is not a profound movie, often stopping short where it might examine greater morality or elevate the plot. Instead, its best dramatic feature is how it makes you believe things will happen when you walked into the movie theatre knowing they couldn't. If you rate this as a high drama, you miss its point - it is a superb action movie and needs to be judged and enjoyed as such. With all its references to Greek and specifically Spartan patriotism, its bold moral values unshared by mainstream America, and a plot driven by Persian aggression on European soil, this movie is absolutely not an allegory for America's conflicts with the Middle East, and only the dimwitted could see this as supporting an American war with Iran. However if that does happen, many marines may use this to psych themselves up. Expand
